Relevance. The traditional practice of increasing production efficiency with a focus on technical reequipment and increase in the unit capacity of the equipment in operation, carried out without proper changes in the organization of production and for equipment repair service strategy leads to inefficient use of resources and loss of working time, which in turn affects the volume of output of the final product. Research aim is to select the optimal combination of planning strategies for mining equipment repair service. Research methodology includes the methods of structural and functional analysis, scientific generalization, and production experiment. Results. The advantages and disadvantages of planning repairs in the traditional system of planned preventive repairs and maintenance system based on technical diagnostics are presented. The main reasons for the increase in the number of emergency repairs are identified. The main components of effective preparation of repair impacts and methods for calculating the repair cycle on the example of an excavator fleet are given. The results obtained when considering the choice of strategy at one of the mining enterprises in the Urals are presented. Conclusions. To ensure the high performance of mining machinery and equipment during its operation, the effect can be obtained only by using the strategy of “condition-based” repair service with the use of technical diagnostics, condition monitoring of each unit, and repair actions planning that prevent sudden equipment failure.

The repairs of building structures are inevitable and indispensable. Repairs are used to restore or maintain the usability of existing facilities, often contributing to the extension of their expected service life, increasing the sustainability of building resources. Given that conservation rules are observed, repairs are also used to save monuments. The concept of repair durability brings to the foreground the durability of the repaired structure (after repair): what service life has been obtained/recovered as a result of the repair. Based on the available data (limited set), a generalised distribution function of repair durability was developed, with a disappointing course. This, however, applies (necessarily) to the past. Significant progress was shown to have been achieved in the theoretical and technical fundamentals of technical repair measures. In this situation, a prognostic distribution function was also designed for future repairs according to EN 1504. A rule of thumb called estimating concrete repair durability, CRD was proposed. The risk associated with estimating the durability of repairs was indicated. A reason for optimism is that proactive monitoring of the condition of the structure and, consequently, management of the repair strategy allows to reach the designed life of the structure.

Indonesia has 95.161 km coastal lines with a total of 17.504 islands. With this nature, Indonesia has 1.226 ports, with a total accumulated length of up to 92 km. However, not all these ports are in proper condition. For ports that have steel jetty piles, corrosion is one of the problems. This paper provides technical experience and methodology for analyzing the pier's corrosion conditions and evaluating existing corrosion's effect on its strength. The survey methodology and required data, including a survey of cathodic protection, visual conditions, and pile thickness, are discussed in this paper. The static strength analysis of the existing state structure was carried out. This article provides repair strategies, including repair methods and a study of the number of piles repaired. This methodology results in the recommendations for pile repair strategies and guidance on effective analytical methods in determining the number of repaired piles for aged steel jetty pile repair.

The purpose of this study is to explore trust repair strategies and the outcomes in mobile (m-)commerce. Consumer trust in m-commerce is a calculus-based form of trust; service failures, “inaction” and “excessive actions” are the typical trust decline situations. Three strategies of the fulfillment of consumers’ psychological contract for compensation, arousal, and regulation are proposed as trust-repaired solutions regarding the abovementioned three situations. The experimental results demonstrate that trust cannot be repaired by a single relational psychological contract strategy and that it can be repaired by both a single transactional and interactive strategy; the interactive strategy is more effective in competence-based decline. Second, in integrity-based decline, both the single and interactive strategy negatively influence trust repair; the relational strategy has the strongest effect. The “boomerang effect” shows that the more m-vendors repair, the more the trust decreases. Third, trust can be repaired, respectively by arousal and regulation strategy regarding corresponding situations of inaction and excessive actions. Finally, the trust repair paradox (TRP) has not been verified in m-commerce.

The article discusses problems of current interest concerning the housing and utility sector associated with increasing the level of comfort of living by constantly improving measures for carrying out planned and un-scheduled repairs and surveys. This work provides a methodology for justi-fying the choice of a repair strategy for engineering systems of water sup-ply and sewerage in the process of operating the housing stock, the imple-mentation of which will contribute to the timely and rational repairs and inspections of buildings engineering systems. This will allow systematical-ly eliminating engineering systems malfunctions, predicting and planning the optimal quantity and chronology of repair and restoration activities by maintaining the technical condition of the engineering system elements within the permissible limits during the standard service life.The main goal of the research in the presented material is to substantiate the methodology for choosing a repair strategy for water supply and sewerage systems dur-ing the operation of apartment buildings.The optimal periodicity for the re-pair of engineering systems depends on the failure rate of elements and the costs associated with the execution of all operational activities.Three op-tions considered for organizing repairs of engineering equipment.Applied in actual practice the technique of choosing the repair strategy of engineer-ing systems for selecting the optimal option to organize repairs of engi-neering equipment.

When a failure occurring during a system operation can result in considerable penalties, it can be more cost-effective to terminate the operation at some time avoiding the risk of future failures. This strategy can be relevant for aging systems, for example, when the system failure rate is increasing. The paper analyzes three strategies of termination for systems with major and minor failures. A major failure automatically terminates the operation, whereas the minor failures are minimally repaired. We show that the age-based strategy outperforms the one with termination after the mth minimal repair. The combined strategy when the termination is performed at time t or upon the mth minimal repair, whichever comes first, is also considered. The emphasis for the latter setting is on the practically relevant case when the number of possible minimal repairs is limited. Numerical examples illustrating the findings are presented.

In this work, the fracture behaviour of repaired honeycomb/carbon–epoxy sandwich panels under edgewise compression and three-point bending loading was analysed. Assuming the occurrence of damage resulting from a complete perforation leading to an open hole, the followed repair strategy consists of plug filling the core hole and considering two scarf patches with an angle of 10° in order to repair the damaged skins. Experimental tests were performed on undamaged and repaired situations in order to address the alteration in the failure modes and assess the repair efficiency. It was observed that repair recovers a large part of the mechanical properties of the corresponding undamaged case. Additionally, a three-dimensional finite element analysis incorporating a mixed-mode I + II + III cohesive zone model was performed for the repaired cases. Cohesive elements were considered in the several critical regions prone to damage development. The failure modes and the resultant load–displacement curves obtained numerically were compared with the experimental ones. It was concluded that the numerical model is suitable for estimating the fracture behaviour of sandwich panel repairs.

The article presents the results of research in the field of ensuring the performance of complex technical objects on the example of transport and technological machines (TTM), which include transport equipment, as well as technological machines (excavators, loaders and other equipment that performs a technological process). The strategy of forming a system of maintenance and repairs taking into account the technical condition of TTM elements is described. The strategy provides for the division of structural elements of machines into four groups, depending on the principle approach to calculating the frequency of their repair. The criterion for determining the frequency of repairs is the probability of reaching the maximum values of characteristics during the inter-repair period, as well as the degree of criticality of the consequences of possible failure of the element.

Many studies identify risk factors for dehiscence, but a paucity of data exist suggesting an optimal treatment strategy. This study examines repair of abdominal wound dehiscence, comparing closure and interposition of mesh. We conducted a retrospective review of 37 individuals who suffered a wound dehiscence after laparotomy. Outcomes of repairs with either primary closure or polyglactin mesh interposition were examined. Twenty-seven individuals underwent repair with primary closure. Twelve of these individuals suffered repeat wound dehiscence; 10 were treated with repeat fascial closure, 2 with polyglactin mesh interposition. Seven individuals initially underwent successful repair with polyglactin mesh interposition; all subsequently had their hernias repaired. Three patients had minor fascial separation managed nonoperatively. Primary closure is associated with a relatively high rate of recurrent wound dehiscence. Closure with polyglactin mesh interposition has a higher initial success rate, but necessitates additional surgeries for repair of the abdominal wall defect.

This paper presents the results of a test of epoxy anticorrosion coating repair. Two strategies of coating repair were studied, respectively: partial repair and integral repair. The gloss loss rate, color difference and rust area rate of the repair coating were measured. The anticorrosion performance of repair coatings under different repair methods was compared. Based on the results of the coating repair test, the repair criteria for coatings were defined, and the repair strategy for epoxy anticorrosive coatings on steel structure was proposed. The results show that Marathon 500 super abrasion resistant epoxy paint (M500) and Jotamastic 90 GF low surface treatment epoxy abrasion resistant glass flake paint (J90GF) are suitable for partial repair of epoxy anticorrosive coatings on steel structures, and that Jotamastic 90 low surface treatment epoxy abrasion resistant coating (J90) and Marathon 500 super abrasion resistant epoxy paint (M500) are suitable for integral repair of epoxy anticorrosive coatings on steel structures.

Abstract Glioblastomas (GBM) are lethal brain tumors for which surgical resection followed by ionizing radiation (IR) with concurrent and adjuvant Temozolomide (TMZ) remains the mainstay of therapy. GBMs are extremely radioresistant, and radiosensitization approaches are desperately needed for these tumors. IR induces DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), and these lesions can be repaired either by error-prone non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) or the error-free homologous recombination (HR) pathway. Research in our and other laboratories has shown that the ATR kinase promotes the HR pathway. We therefore hypothesized that ATR inhibition would block DSB repair in rapidly-dividing GBM cells that are HR dependent but not in non-dividing normal brain cells that are dependent upon NHEJ for repair. We treated a panel of GBM cell lines and normal human astrocytes with the ATR inhibitor VX-803 and/or IR and assessed for multiple endpoints including HR, DSB repair, and cell survival. We found that VX-803 blocks HR and DSB repair in GBM cells but does not significantly affect repair in non-dividing normal human astrocytes. Hence, treatment with VX-803 sensitizes GBM lines to IR in vitro as measured by the colony formation assay. Next, PDX mouse models of GBM were treated with VX-803 followed by XRT, and monitored for tumor growth and survival. We found that the drug can cross the blood-brain barrier and, in conjunction with IR, block DNA repair in intracranial tumors, attenuate tumor growth, and consequently extend survival of tumor-bearing mice. Importantly, the drug does not significantly affect DSB repair in normal brain cells indicating that ATR inhibition might selectively block repair in GBM cells, thereby minimizing normal tissue toxicity. Our results indicate that regulation of HR by ATR is critical for optimal DSB repair, especially in rapidly-dividing GBM cells, and that ATR inhibition could be used to improve GBM radiotherapy in the clinic.

This article analyses the factors that considerably influence the efficiency of automobile technical exploitation. It has been noted that automobile technical exploitation is basically determined by the following factors: the system and organizational level of automobile technical maintenance and repairs; the level of service basis; qualification of the staff; the level of stock and supply; the structure and age of automotive fleet and conditions of exploitation. This article presents the analysis of the first factor. The factor is significant enough and does not involve big investments. A theoretical analysis of the system of automobile technical maintenance and repair has been carried out. According to the nature of automobile technical maintenance and repairs two strategies are possible: the planned-preventive and the mixed type. Applying the first strategy the exact number of operations is being planned ahead, but the amount of work remains unknown. According to the second strategy the technical condition of an automobile has to be checked before starting technical maintenance and repair and only then the exact number of operations can be defined. The second strategy makes it possible to save spare parts, materials and time. This strategy, however, can be applied to the automobiles that are in good technical condition. The analysis of automobile technical maintenance and repair organization has shown that in order to improve the efficiency of automobile technical maintenance and repair the laws of mass service theory should be applied.

Abstract OBJECTIVE Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea is leakage of CSF from the nasal cavity caused by cranial base or meningeal defects. Surgical treatment of CSF rhinorrhea is still problematic. We evaluated the clinical outcomes of 132 consecutive cases of CSF rhinorrhea treated via transcranial or transnasal endoscopic approaches according to the patient's condition. The indications for the approaches are discussed. METHODS Of 132 patients with CSF rhinorrhea, a transnasal endoscopic approach was used in 98 to repair cranial base defects in the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. A transcranial intradural approach was used in the remaining 34 patients for frontal sinus defects, multiple fractures of the cranial base, or combination nerve injury. RESULTS CSF rhinorrhea resolved after initial surgery in 124 of 132 patients, giving a success rate of 94%. Of the 8 failures or recurrent cases, 4 were successfully repaired by repeat endoscopic surgery, 2 were cured by transcranial revision surgery, and 2 refused additional surgery (the condition subsequently resolved without treatment in these patients). Postoperative complications included intracranial infection (8 patients) and anosmia (1 patient). No neurological deficits were apparent over the 10-month mean follow-up period. CONCLUSION Transnasal endoscopic repair is a reliable method for CSF rhinorrhea patients whose fistulae are located in the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. The transcranial procedure should be the treatment of choice for patients with frontal sinus fracture, multiple or complex anterior cranial base fractures, or nerve injury. A satisfactory surgical outcome depends on exact diagnosis, proper operative approach, and the surgeon's skill and experience.

The current study investigates self-repairs in the speech of three groups of Russian speakers: monolingual controls (N = 12) residing in the Russian Federation, for whom Russian is their first dominant language (L1); bilingual Russian–Hebrew speaking participants (N = 12), who acquired Russian as their Heritage Language (HL) in contact with the dominant Societal Hebrew in Israel; and bilingual Russian–Chinese speakers (N = 12) residing in the Russian Federation at the time of testing, for whom Russian is their second language (L2). Picture-elicited narratives were coded for instances of self-repairs, split into Conceptualizer Repairs (C-repairs)—which imply pragmatic, semantic, or lexical changes—and Formulator Repairs (F-repairs), correcting different types of errors. In addition, self-repair initiators—such as cut-offs, hesitation pauses, and discourse markers—were annotated before each instance of self-repair. The results indicate that L2 speakers, in general, use self-repairs more frequently than L1 and HL speakers. L1 speakers hardly produced F-repairs, while HL and L2 speakers resorted to both C- and F-repairs. L1 speakers mainly used C-repairs for appropriacy, whereas HL and L2 speakers used C-repairs for rephrasing and lexical item change. As for F-repairs, HL speakers tended to change pronunciation and morphology, while L2 speakers implemented more morphological repairs. Lexical initiators of self-repairs were more common in L1 speech; however, in the L2 group we saw much more frequent cut-offs of repaired speech fragments. As such, varying self-repair strategies were employed by different speaker groups, shedding light on the underlying processes of language production. There was also evidence of cross-linguistic transfer of non-lexical self-repair initiators: HL speakers resorted to prolongations as initiators in HL-Russian (a strategy that is common in their dominant language, Hebrew), whereas L1 speakers used vocalized and silent pauses more frequently.

Abstract This paper analyses a possible gendered manifestation of norms in interpreting. It focuses on the use of self-repair, a textual expression of the norm, by male and female interpreters. Two research questions are examined: (1) whether the extent to which self-repairs occur in interpreting is gendered and (2) whether gender influences the way in which the output is repaired using editing terms. Considering the literature on gender and norm-compliance, female interpreters are expected to produce more self-repairs and editing terms than male interpreters. The research is based on the 2008 subcorpus of EPICG with French source speeches and their English and Dutch interpretations. The interpreters’ self-repairs were manually identified and statistically compared. Regarding the first question, it appears that gender influences the use of self-repairs in interpreting. As for the second one, statistical analysis reveals language-based patterns: in the English booth, women use significantly more editing terms than men. The French/Dutch subcorpus yields no significant difference. However, women seem to also use apologies as editing terms.

The aims of the study were to characterise the resin-resin interface when a universal bonding agent (UBA) was used in two different strategies in direct composite repair and to evaluate the bonding capacity of UBA by microleakage assessment. In study groups a micro-filled hybrid and a nano-filled hybrid composite resins were aged in order to simulate an old restorations. As a repair material was chosen the same micro-filled hybrid composite resin that was used as an old restoration. UBA was applied in etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies and was used as an intermediate layer in repair procedure. After the repair the samples were aged again. In control groups were included non-aged, repaired composite resins samples. The resin-resin interface was characterised on SEM images and the microleakage at the interface was evaluated by dye penetration assessment. Universal bonding agent used in direct composite resins repair showed a very good adaptation to non-aged micro-filled hybrid and nano-filled hybrid composite resins. Aging by saliva storage of repaired composite resins leaded to an enlargement of resin-resin junction and a increased microleakage irrespective of the strategy (etch-and-rinse or self -etch) used for bonding agent application. Etch-and-rinse strategy for universal bonging agent application determined a better interface bonding when compared to self -etch strategy.

Introduction: Digital nerves are the most injured upper limb peripheral nerves [1]. There are numerous different methods of repair, with no standardised treatment options or guidelines. This systematic review aims to evaluate literature that investigated thebiomechanical strength of digital nerve repairs through varying methods in cadaveric models.Aims/Hypothesis: The aim of the study is to evaluate the literature available for digital nerve repairs and directly compare which surgical method yields the best results. The primary outcome is maximum load to failure of the repaired digital nerve following biomechanical (tensile) strength testing. We postulate that out of all the repair methods, augmentation of repair with fibrin glue or additional conduit will increase the load to failure compared to suture only repair.Methodology: We utilised the PRISMA methodology to conduct the systematic review. The following databases were searched: Embase, Medline, Cochrane, and Web of Science. Studies were reviewed and screened by two researchers following an inclusion and exclusion strategy to retrieve relevant papers.Results: A total of seven papers were included in the final review; these papers reported biomechanical data on cadaveric digital nerve repairs. Due to heterogenicity of methods between papers, a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results was made.Conclusion: The use of minimal suturing with conduit or glue or both has the ability to increase the maximum load to failure of digital nerve repairs compared to suture only methods. This has additional benefits to decrease the number of sutures required for repair. This thereby reduces potential scarring and inflammation.

The aim of the research is construct a model that allows to make the best decisions while carrying out repairs on the road. These decisions can be made taking into account both the interests of the participants of the traffic and taking into account the costs spent on repair. This paper presents optimization model for traffic zones using queueing controlled models in searching for an optimal management strategy. This optimal strategy is based on the theory of controlled semi-Markov processes. As a result we have controlled model for use during road repair periods. The model can be complicated and varied depending on the conditions.

Network repair is indispensable for maintaining network security. Conventional static repair is relatively inefficient. In this study, by considering the energy transfer between nodes, a dynamic repair model was established. The fundamental reason for the secondary failure of repaired nodes during the dynamic repair process is the coupling structure of failure networks. A dynamic repair strategy was proposed that can effectively prevent the secondary failure of repair nodes influenced by energy during repair and can cause the redundant capacity of repair nodes to be used reasonably. By turning off the energy transfer function of the link to control the excessive flow of energy into the repair node to avoid the occurrence of secondary failure; on the other hand, by sharing part of the load of the failure node, realize the rational use of the redundant capacity of the repair node to reduce the impact of the failure node on the overall function of the network. The proposed strategy mitigated the effect of failure nodes on network functions and substantially improved the recovery efficiency of network functions. Furthermore, redundant edges, behaving as energy redundant links in a network structure, can considerably improve the robustness of the network by optimizing the removal of redundant edges. Dynamic repair is not only an efficient repair method but also a highly flexible choice for network repair.

Background Congenital heart disease with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (SPAH), previously thought to have irreversible pulmonary vascular disease (PVD), has been recently successfully corrected using diagnostic treatment and repair strategy by our surgery team. This study aimed to evaluate the midterm results of a selected cohort of older patients with nonrestrictive ventricular septal defect (VSD) and SPAH using diagnostic treatment and repair strategy. Methods The records of 56 patients older than six years with nonrestrictive VSD and SPAH undergoing diagnostic treatment and repair strategy from 2006 to 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients received advanced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) therapy and radical repairs were performed when transcutaneous oxygen saturation (SPO2) increased up to 93%. Results There were no operative deaths. SPO2 and baseline six-minute walk test (SMWT) distance of all selected patients increased significantly and mean pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP) regressed significantly after diagnostic treatment and at late follow-up (P<0.01). The incidence of late postoperative PAH was seen in six (10.7%) patients and by Logistic regression analysis, early postoperative PAH was an independent risk factor related to late postoperative PAH. Conclusions Diagnostic treatment and repair strategy was effective and safe for treatment of nonrestrictive VSD and SPAH and the midterm results were excellent. Diagnostic treatment strategy was effective in assessing the reversibility of SPAH in older patients associated with nonrestrictive VSD and the PVD in these selective patients is generally reversible.

Background: The loss of extensor mechanism continuity that occurs with patellar and quadriceps tendon rupture has devastating consequences on patient function. Purpose: To describe a treatment strategy for extensor mechanism disruption and evaluate the outcomes of 3 techniques: primary repair, repair with semitendinosus tendon autograft augmentation, and reconstruction with Achilles tendon allograft. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: The authors reviewed surgeries for extensor mechanism disruption performed by a single surgeon between 1999 and 2019. Patient characteristics, imaging studies, surgical techniques, and outcomes were recorded. Primary ruptures with robust tissue quality were repaired primarily, and first-time ruptures with significant tendinosis or moderate tissue loss were repaired using quadrupled semitendinosus tendon autograft augmentation. Patients with failed previous extensor mechanism repair or reconstruction and poor tissue quality underwent reconstruction with Achilles tendon allograft. The primary outcome was extensor mechanism integrity at a minimum 1-year follow-up, with extensor mechanism lag defined as >5° loss of terminal, active knee extension. Secondary outcomes included postoperative knee range of motion, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Tegner activity scores, and the radiographic Caton-Deschamps Index. Results: Included were 22 patellar tendon and 21 quadriceps tendon surgeries (patients: 82.5% male; mean age, 48.1 years; body mass index, 31). Seventeen (39.5%) cases underwent primary tendon repair, 13 (30.2%) had repair using semitendinosus tendon autograft augmentation, and 13 (30.2%) underwent reconstruction using an Achilles tendon allograft. Seventeen (39.5%) cases had at least 1 prior failed extensor mechanism surgery performed at an outside facility. At the last follow-up, 4 (9.3%) cases had an extensor mechanism lag, no cases required additional extensor mechanism surgery, and all cases were able to achieve >90° of knee flexion. Postoperative IKDC scores were significantly improved with all methods of extensor mechanism surgery, and postoperative Tegner activity scores were significantly improved in patients who underwent primary repair and Achilles tendon allograft reconstruction ( P < .05 for all). Conclusion: Primary repair alone, repair using quadrupled semitendinosus tendon autograft augmentation, and reconstruction using Achilles tendon allograft were all effective methods to restore extensor mechanism and knee function with the proper indications. Persistent knee extensor lag was more common in chronic extensor mechanism injuries after failed surgery, although patients still reported significantly improved postoperative functional outcomes.

ABSTRACTThis article examines the organization and function of information-withholding sequences, a conversational strategy used by participants in gossip interactions on Nukulaelae, a Polynesian atoll of the Central Pacific. A withholding sequence is a three-turn sequence whereby a piece of information is withheld in the first turn, an other-repair is initiated in the second turn, and the withheld material is provided in the third turn. Information-withholding sequences thus involve moves that in other contexts would be construed as face-threatening. They have a dual function: they provide speakers an opportunity to manipulate their audiences into becoming coproducers of the gossip, and they reinforce the status of their initiator as controller of the floor. Withholding sequences illustrate how ambiguity and repairs can be exploited to meet the communicative demands of particular interactional contexts. They also illustrate how gossip may be framed simultaneously as group-cohesive behavior and self-serving behavior. To form a methodology for assessing the comparative effectiveness of repair management strategies: «By frequency, running hours» and «By technical condition». To verify the performance of the integrated methodology. Justify and demonstrate the effectiveness of the repair management strategy: «By technical condition» of the equipment on the real example of the typical scheme of the electrical supply system of oil fields.METHODS. In solving the problems set: the method of block diagrams for calculating the structural reliability of electric distribution network, including the probabilities of power supply failure in the circuit of each technological consumer, taking into account the possibility of redundancy and imposing an emergency restoration of the main element on the planned repair of the reserve, the method of hierarchy analysis for integral assessment of the actual technical condition of electrical equipment 6 (10) kV, method of calculating the mathematical expectation of damage from technological losses of oil production to assess the severity of the consequences of disruption of electricity supply to consumers of oil production, the method of expert decisions to adjust the regulatory periodicity and frequency of scheduled repairs of equipment, depending on the actual value of technical condition index.RESULTS. The relevance of the research direction is substantiated. Computational methodology of comprehensive assessment of comparative efficiency of equipment repair management strategies in oilfield power supply system «By frequency, running hours» and «By technical condition» to justify the priority of one of them has been formed. On a concrete computational example the preference of strategy choice «By technical condition» is proved as applied to the equipment of 6(10) kV power supply systems of oil fields.CONCLUSION. The developed methodology and its validation on the example of a real power supply system allows to substantiate and illustrate the effectiveness of the strategy «By technical condition» in comparison with the strategy: «By frequency, running hours» in relation to the management of repairs of oil production facilities.

With technological advances, additive manufacturing processes have been gaining prominence in several industrial areas including maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) processes. A process with great potential for repairing and rebuilding metal parts is laser metal deposition (LMD) technology. Despite the high potential, LMD implementation in the repair industry is not straightforward, due to the geometry variability of parts and damages to be repaired. This paper presents a repairability study that evaluates the remaining volume of the repair of different types of damages in AISI 316L parts by LMD, and determines the most appropriate deposition strategies to adapt to the repair process. This study involves the characterization and classification of common defects in metallic parts and the development of a design of experiments, in which, given the damage geometry, volume, and location, the best repair toolpath to be adopted and the ideal parameterization for the repair process are determined. The ability to correct part damage is assessed from a geometric, mechanical and energetic approach, and explores the possibility of including LMD in an adaptive and intelligent MRO system. The result of this work establishes a new deposition strategy approach based on a modified contour-parallel deposition strategy for repairing metal parts. This study also demonstrates that in surface damage cases, a fixed point strategy is highly effective, especially when using higher laser power values and larger laser spot diameters, enabling an easier process automation. However, in edge and corner damage cases, the best repair approach is using trajectory strategies that constitute material support between deposition tracks and layers. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the corners are the most critical zones that require temperature control throughout the entire repair process.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent a consumer’s repair strategy impacts the annual costs of ownership of a washing machine and two types of vacuum cleaner. Design/methodology/approach The annual cost of ownership is determined by calculating the annual life cycle cost (LCC) for the respective devices. The annual LCCs of the different scenarios allow a comparison of the different repair strategy options. A Monte Carlo simulation is run to introduce parameter variability. The device’s failure rate is estimated by a combination of data sets on the devices’ performance. Findings Results demonstrate that the repair of the devices considered is a more favourable option over replacement. A consumer who aims for the lowest annual LCC should allow for a high number of repairs per device, without putting a maximum on the cost per repair. However, the consumer should become more cautious when a device approaches the end of its expected lifetime. Finally, the purchase of warranty can be interesting when the warranty covers a sufficiently long proportion of the device’s (expected) lifetime and when its cost does not exceed a threshold proportion of the initial purchase price. Research limitations/implications The costs for repair might be overestimated. Future research can focus on the reduction of repair costs following self-repair. Practical implications The results provide strong arguments in favour of repair instead of replacement of broken devices. Originality/value This is the first research to quantify the influence of consumer behaviour in the context of repair of devices on the ownership costs of these devices.

Background: Critical bone defects are a significant problem in clinics. The periosteum plays a vital role in bone regeneration. A tissue-engineered periosteum (TEP) has received increasing attention as a novel strategy for bone defect repairs. Methods: In this experiment, a biomimetic periosteum was fabricated by using coaxial electrospinning technology with decellularized porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) as the shell and polycaprolactone (PCL) as the core. In vitro, the effects of the biomimetic periosteum on Schwann cells, vascular endothelial cells, and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were detected by a scratch test, an EdU, a tube-forming test, and an osteogenesis test. In vivo, we used HE staining to evaluate the effect of the biomimetic periosteum on bone regeneration. Results: In vitro experiments showed that the biomimetic periosteum could significantly promote the formation of angiogenesis, osteogenesis, and repaired Schwann cells (SCs). In vivo experiments showed that the biomimetic periosteum could promote the repair of bone defects. Conclusions: The biomimetic periosteum could simulate the structural function of the periosteum and promote bone repair. This strategy may provide a promising method for the clinical treatment of skull bone defects.

Blunt trauma-induced diaphragmatic hernia (DIH) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. Prompt diagnosis and management are crucial for successful outcomes. We present the case of a 40-year-old male who sustained blunt abdominal and chest trauma resulting in a left DIH with extensive gastrointestinal involvement. The patient underwent emergency laparotomy with primary repair of the diaphragmatic defect and resection of gangrenous stomach and bowel segments. Postoperatively, the patient recovered well and was discharged on day 14. Diagnosis of DIH relies on high clinical suspicion and radiological imaging, with CT scan being the modality of choice. Management involves surgical repair, either by primary closure or with the use of mesh, depending on the extent of the injury and presence of infection. Mortality rates are high in emergency repairs, especially when associated with bowel necrosis and perforation. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and timely intervention in DIH. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for DIH in patients presenting with a history of trauma and respiratory or abdominal symptoms. Improving awareness and understanding of abdominal injuries in trauma centers can help in early diagnosis and appropriate management, ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients with DIH.

We herein propose a repair-replace strategy to minimize the expected warranty servicing costs for manufacturers when the items sold with a free repair-replacement warranty policy. Manufacturers usually rectify a failure either by repairing the failed item or by replacing it with a new one when a repairable product fails under warranty. In addition, the rectification action influences the repair and warranty servicing cost. Except for the time or age, the usage intensity is often another essential factor that accounts for the failure of the product, which varies the population of users. Our strategy classified the usage population into several groups and provided different repair actions for various groups.

Using Bayesian Network is currently an effective solution to automotive fault diagnosis. However, Bayesian Networks can only be used to reason and calculate probability of component failure. During a fault troubleshooting process, apart from fault probability, diagnostic engineers also need consider the utilities of repair actions to make a sensible repair decision. The paper extends a Bayesian Network to a Bayesian influence diagram, which integrates the influences of both probability and utility. An automobile engine start-up failure is used as a case study to establish troubleshooting decision influence diagram. The diagram combines failure causes, decision actions with their utilities and is able to reason and calculate the expected utilities of each action. Troubleshooters choose faulty component with the highest utility to repair. The method ensures the most sensible repair action is selected in each troubleshooting step.

Splenic artery aneurysms are rare with an incidence of less than 0.8%. Evidence to support an endovascular management strategy over open surgical repair for SAA is limited. We used the Nationwide Inpatient Sample to compare open to endovascular SAA repair by assessing postoperative outcomes, length of hospital stay, and mortality. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was done to determine predictors of postoperative complications. There were 2316 admissions with a diagnosis code for SAA [347 (14.9%) endovascular repair and 112 (4.8%) open surgery]. There was a statistically significant lower rate of cardiac (2.3% vs 6.9%, P = 0.05) and pulmonary (8.9% vs 16.1%, P = 0.05) complications for the endovascular repair group. The risk of surgical site infection was also lower (0.6% vs 5.1%, P = 0.01) in the endovascular group. Median in-hospital LOS was greater for open repairs (6 vs. 4 days, P = 0.01). There were no statistically significant differences across procedures for renal complications (8.9%, P = 0.88) or in-hospital mortality (3%, P = 0.99). Regression analysis established procedure type to be independent predictor of postoperative complications. Endovascular repair of SAA is therefore associated with a lower complication rate and less resource utilization but no difference in mortality peri-operatively. This may justify an endovascular first treatment strategy in the management of SAA.

In resilience-based frameworks, optimizing the repair strategy and approaches is important for the recovery of the function of gas network systems (GNS) and water network systems (WNS). According to the resilience quantification results of GNS and WNS for a real example urban city in China, the potential impact of utilizing different repair sequences and repair/replacement approaches was investigated. First, a Monte Carlo simulation-based method was proposed to search for the optimal repair sequence according to the skew of the recovery trajectory (SRT). Under high seismic intensity conditions, the significant difference between the repair sequence corresponding to maximum SRT and minimum SRT indicates that choosing the optimal repair sequence is important in the enhancement of repair efficiency, especially when the pipelines have experienced serious damage. We also discussed the parallel repair strategy, which is more consistent with the practice, and can greatly improve the recovery efficiency compared with the single pipeline repair strategy under large damage conditions; however, under minor damage levels, the parallel repair strategy may result in a certain degree of redundancy. Next, three different repair approaches were thoroughly compared, including the point-by-point repair approach, whole pipeline replacement, and hybrid repair approach. At the condition of high seismic intensity (e.g., macroseismic intensity IX), the resilience curves for the hybrid repair approach and the pipeline replacement approach are overall similar and take less time and economic cost than the point-by-point repair approach. However, when the seismic intensity is low, the point-by-point repair approach is most efficient and has the shortest recovery time. Therefore, the choice of repair approach should be determined by stakeholders based on the specific pipeline’s damage situation. Finally, we calculated the joint resilience curves by allocating different weight factors to GNS and WNS, to represent the proportion of water and gas supply that contributes to community resilience.

Purpose A temporal XML database could become an inconsistent model of the represented reality after a retroactive update. Such an inconsistency state must be repaired by performing corrective actions (e.g. payment of arrears after a retroactive salary increase) either immediately (i.e. at inconsistency detection time) or in a deferred manner, at one or several chosen repair times according to application requirements. The purpose of this work is to deal with deferred and multi-step repair of detected data inconsistencies. Design/methodology/approach A general approach for deferred and stepwise repair of inconsistencies that result from retroactive updates of currency data (e.g. the salary of an employee) in a valid-time or bitemporal XML database is proposed. The approach separates the inconsistency repairs from the inconsistency detection phase and deals with the execution of corrective actions, which also take into account enterprise’s business rules that define some relationships between data. Findings Algorithms, methods and support data structures for deferred and multi-step inconsistency repair of currency data are presented. The feasibility of the approach has been shown through the development and testing of a system prototype, named Deferred-Repair Manager. Originality/value The proposed approach implements a new general and flexible strategy for repairing detected inconsistencies in a deferred manner and possibly in multiple steps, according to varying user’s requirements and to specifications which are customary in the real world.

The performance of repair services is very important to determine the achievement of consumer confidence. The strategy that needs to be made is to pay attention to the timeliness of repairs so that no one is harmed between consumers and service providers. Tracing information on data from repair services is one effective way to determine the accuracy of computer repair time. The collection of information used comes from the Istidata Indopacific Solution Center (IISC) repair service dataset, consisting of a collection of data on the completion time of product unit repairs that are achieved and not achieved. Repair completion time is the time in accordance with the agreement between the repair service party and the consumer. Data processing is carried out by processing analytical data by utilizing the Weka Tools software with the application of classification with the J48 decision tree method which is the development of the C4.5 algorithm. The effectiveness of this method was tested using 10-fold cross validation, where from the results of the confusion matrix measurement an accuracy of 99.5% was obtained. The result states that the J48 decision tree method is effective and can be used to predict the accuracy of computer repair time.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to covenant with the cost assessment of a complex repairable system, consisting of two subsystems (Subsystem 1 and Subsystem 2) connected in series configuration and being operated by a human operator. Each subsystem has two identical units in parallel configuration and has different types of failure and two types of repairs (general repair and copula repair). Through the transition diagram, the system of first-order partial differential equations is derived and solved using a supplementary variable technique, Laplace transforms. All failures are assumed to follow exponential distribution, whereas repairs follow two types of distributions that are general and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula. In this paper, explicit expressions for reliability, availability, mean time to failure (MTTF) and cost analysis functions have been obtained. In this paper, two types of repairs (copula repair and general repair) have been studied, and it has been concluded that copula repair is more reliable as compared to general repair. Some computations are taken as particular case by evaluating: reliability, availability, MTTF and cost analysis, so as to capture the effect of both failure and repair rates to reliability measures. The results have been shown in tables and graphs. The convincing part has been discussed in last section of this study. Design/methodology/approach This paper is focused on the cost assessment of a system consisting two subsystem series configuration. Each subsystem has two identical units in parallel configuration. The performance of the system has been analyzed by supplementary variable techniques and Laplace transforms. Various measures of the reliability have been discussed by evaluations. Software called Maple 13 is used for computations. Findings In this research paper, the authors have evaluated the operational cost and incurred profit of the system together with other reliability measures for various situations and different types of failures and two types of repairs using Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution. Research limitations/implications The present research focuses on the series and parallel configured complex systems that is used everywhere in industry and other sectors. The authors main aim is to claim that repair through the joint probability distribution copula is far better than general repair. Copula repair for a completely failed system is more beneficial for industrial system operations that will increase profit to the industrial sector. Practical implications The authors have observed that when repair follows general distribution the values of reliability obtained of the system are less compared to the those obtained when the authors apply copula repair, a joint probability distribution. It is a clear implication for industrial sector and organization to use the policy for a better generate revenue. Social implications According to the best of authors’ knowledge, there is no social implication as this study is meant for reliability section. The study in management and case study matters is considered to have social implication. Originality/value This research is the original work of authors. Nothing has been copied from any paper or book. The references are cited according to the relevance of study.
