A follow-up was done to Leak and Fish's (1989) study of intrinsically and extrinsically religious individuals using Paulhus' (1984) Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding, a two factor scale of socially desirable responding measuring self-deceptive enhancement (SDE) and impression management (IM). 275 introduction to psychology students were group tested and categorized by gender and by religious orientation with Allport and Ross's (1967) fourfold Religious Orientation Scale (ROS). Differences between the four types were hypothesized on the religious relevance of the SDE and IM scale items. A difference score was also computed by contrasting two instructional sets on the BIDR as a measure of variation across situations. Measures of private and public self-consciousness, social anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and self esteem were included.

Syfte – Denna studie undersöker hur verksamma lärare i årskurs 1–3 undervisar i religionskunskap om världsreligionerna, kristendom, islam och judendom i mångkulturella och homogena klasser i svenska skolor. Syftet med studien är att undersöka om det finns skillnader i undervisningen mellan de två olika elevgrupperna, samt vilka faktorer som påverkar lärares val av undervisningsinnehåll. Ur ett lärarperspektiv ska denna studie dessutom öka insikten över hur lärare påverkas och utformar sin världsreligionsundervisning utifrån olika elevsammansättningar. Metod och teori– Undersökningen genomfördes med hjälp av en webbenkät som innehöll 26 frågor med varierande svarsalternativ. Enkäten består av två delar, bakgrundsfrågor samt frågor om religionsundervisningen och besvarades av 103 respondenter. Den insamlade empirin undersöks utifrån ramfaktorteorin. Resultat – De huvudsakliga resultaten visar att skillnaden mellan mångkulturella och homogena elevgrupper är liten. Det finns dock en skillnad i hur mycket uppmärksamhet högtiderna gavs i de olika religionerna mellan elevgrupperna. Läroplanen anses vara den faktorn som styr religionsundervisningen i högsta grad då resultatet visar att lärarna utgår från den när de planerar sin undervisning. Avslutningsvis diskuteras resultatet i relation till den tidigare forskningen och ramfaktorteorin.
Purpose – This study examines how active teachers in grades 1-3 teach religious studies about world religions, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, in multicultural and homogeneous classes in Swedish schools. The purpose of the study is to examine whether there are differences in teaching between the two different groups of students, as well as the factors influencing choice of teaching content.  From a teacher's perspective, this study will also increase insight into how teachers are affected and thereby designing their world religious teaching based on different student compositions. Method and theory– The survey was conducted using an online survey that includes 26 questions with varying response options. The survey consists of two parts: background questions; and questions about religious education and was answered by 103 respondents. The collected empirics is analyzed based on the framework factor theory. Results – The main results show that the difference between multicultural and homogeneous groups of pupils is insignificant. However, there was a difference in how much attention the religious holidays were given in the different religions between the student groups. The curriculum is considered to be the factor that governs religious education to the highest degree as the results show that teachers start from it when planning their teaching. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to the previous research and framework factor theory.

Den här uppsatsen handlar om självmord bland äldre personer. Syfte är att genom enlitteraturstudie redovisa de bakomliggande orsaksfaktorer för äldres självmord och omreligionsutövningen kan fungera som copingstrategi för förebyggandet av självmord. Iresultatet visas tre vanligaste risk och orsaksfaktorer till äldre människors självmord. Dessa ärpsykisk ohälsa, fysisk ohälsa och social isolering eller ensamhet. Religionsutövning visadesig kunna fungera som ett skydd mot självmord genom det sociala tillhörighet som erbjudsdär, dessutom visade resultatet även positiva samband mellan äldres suicid ochreligionsutövning som copingstrategi. Dock med relativt svaga resultat.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between student leadership and alcohol use. Previous literature had examined alcohol use of leaders and non-leaders in high-use organizations â Greeks and athletes. This study extends that literature by focusing on leaders and non-leaders in low-use organizations, and by examining students with multiple leadership roles. The research used existing data from the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey. A random sample of 2,000 respondents was obtained from the Core Institute at Southern Illinois University â Carbondale. Respondents were leaders and non-leader members of minority and ethnic organizations and religious and interfaith groups. From this total sample, 624 students were active in minority organizations only, 865 were involved in religious groups only, and 511 were active in both. Dependent variables were drawn from four questions on the Core Survey concerning average number of drinks per week, consumption of five or more drinks at one sitting, negative consequences of alcohol use, and alcohol-related beliefs. No statistically significant differences were found in the alcohol use of leader and non-leaders who were active only in minority groups. Significant differences were found however, between leaders and non-leaders who were active only in religious groups. For these groups, leaders consumed alcohol, engaged in high-risk drinking, experienced negative consequences, and ascribed to alcohol-related myths at a lower rate than those not in leadership positions. Student in dual leadership positions across the whole sample reported significantly higher alcohol use than student involved in one leadership position. Students with leadership roles in both minority and religious organizations drank approximately three times as much (9.75 per week) as those who are leaders in only one type of organization (2.75 per week). The results of this study, understood in the context of the existing literature on alcohol and leadership in high-use organizations, suggest that a Leader Factor may exist: Leaders of student organizations tend to drink at least as much as non-leaders, and those with multiple leadership roles have the highest rate of involvement with alcohol. The single exception to this rule is leaders who are active in religious groups only.

Celle-ci s’articule autour de cinq questions :1) Quel est l’état des représentations du fait religieux dans les organisations ? 2) Dans quelle mesure les représentations, du fait religieux, conditionnent- elles le basculement, de la prise en compte, vers un positionnement lui étant favorable ou défavorable ? 3) En quoi une répartition des organisations, par secteur, par taille…, des postures adoptées par les organisations face au fait religieux éclairerait- elle la compréhension de ce phénomène? 4) Quel est le niveau managérial le plus sollicité par les organisations pour traiter le fait religieux? 5) A quel niveau de traitement les pratiques managériales sont-elles plus appropriées pour éviter une performance réduite du capital humain ?
To what extent the inclusion of the religious fact by the organizations participates in the emergence of new managerial practices? The role of religion in status attainment process of native born American population has received adequate scholarly attention. However, not much is known about the religion-stratification link for US immigrants. Using the New Immigrant Survey (NIS) 2003, this dissertation examines the role of religious orientations and spiritual commitments on status attainment measures such as education, employment, and income among recent US immigrants. NIS is a nationally representative sample of recent US immigrants who receive permanent residency in year 2003. Results showed that immigrants' mobility patterns vary significantly by religious factors. Over all, findings of this dissertation supported hypotheses based on religious schemata and religious capital theory. Religious conservatism and higher pre-migration religious attendance were significant predictors of lower attainments. In contrast, the effects of post-migration religious attendance and church membership were found to negligible for the most part. Some gender differences were also noteworthy. Surprisingly, religious effects for men's attainment outcomes were more pronounced than women's. The limitations and the future directions for research in this area have also been discussed.

This qualitative study investigated the religious motivation of college-age LDS young single adults. In particular, this study sought to answer the following question: “What are the contexts and social factors that influence religious motivation of collegeage LDS young adults to study religious texts?” To examine this question, a phenomenological approach was used to explore what participants had in common with feeling motivated to read religious texts. The primary sources of data came from one-on-one interviews that describe the personal experiences and perspectives of 10 college-age LDS young single adults. Sociocultural theory guided the analysis and interpretation of data and findings. Findings indicated the following: (a) regardless of the context, it appeared that involvement in discussions about the scriptures increased the likelihood of an individual feeling motivated to read, (b) even when other contexts included elements that encouraged scripture reading, it appeared that friends strongly influenced whether or not individuals felt motivated to read scriptures, (c) it appeared that environments of expectation influenced motivation to read, and (d) it appeared that individuals who spent time marking and writing in their scriptures felt motivated to read. Based on these findings, it is recommended that further research be done to explore the following: (a) What types of discussions influence motivation to read religious texts? (b) What other religious practices are influenced by friends? (c) How should expectations be communicated and maintained? (d) Is there a difference in motivation between marking (coloring) things in the scriptures and writing (journaling) in the scriptures? It is also important to examine these findings to see if they hold true within other religious contexts and denominations.

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to document the motivational factors of postmodern era volunteers and to examine how potential commonalities in philosophy, theology, and leadership styles can provide common ground for the postmodern and traditional volunteers in Christian religious organizations (CRO). The scope of the research study was limited to a traditional CRO with active Generation X and millennial generations volunteering in the organization. The specific population consisted of members of a CRO. The use of interviews, focus groups, and observations supported the holistic analysis through the triangulation of data. The data analysis followed an inductive and deductive analysis process. The results of the study provided several findings related to postmodern era generation motivation factors. The emergent themes from the research of the phenomenon were: family focus, Spiritual release, modeling religion through leadership action, leadership style, giftings, volunteer opportunities that model religion, and community leadership. The results of the case study revealed that the postmodern era generations of the CRO studied favored family focus as motivation to volunteer. Additionally, the findings demonstrated that the postmodern era volunteers believed that the commitment to join also implied a commitment to volunteer time to the organization. The findings from the study demonstrated that the actions of the outreach ministries with the community should model the educational teaching of the organization. The recommendations from this study for CRO leaders include focusing on the whole family, designing outreach tasks that support service to families and the community, and demonstrating religion through service to community.

Germany is presently transforming into a modern immigration state, leaving behind its image of a “guest worker” country. Parallely, it is confronted with growing religious plurality and rising religious conflicts. Moreover, religious labeling of groups other than the Christian or undenominational majority population becomes more significant. Against this background, the paper discusses the views of the population in Germany towards religious plurality, practices of religious minorities as well as attitudes towards members of different religious groups. The results reveal a considerable amount of negative attitudes towards foreign religious groups in Germany. More specifically, Islam and Muslims are mostly viewed as negative by the German population. Structural equation models with manifest variables show that, in particular, the frequency of contacts have positive impacts on attitudes towards people of different religious affiliations.

Luego tratamos sobre la personalidd jurídica de la Iglesia Católica, tema que sin duda, es uno de los más tratados por la doctrina en este sentido. Sin entrar en el detalle de muchos aspectos, puesto que ello constituye material para realizar una memoria completa. Empero, exponemos los aspectos más importantes: teorías, doctrina sobre el tema, jurisrprudencia, etc. Sin duda que el factor religioso alcanza a otros importantes temas en el Código Civil: muerte civil (hoy derogada), matrimonio, guardas, sucesión por causa de muerte, etc. Sobre ellas también efectuaremos una exposición general que mostrará el escenario en el cual se presentará la última y más extensa parte de esta memoria.

Most research universities in the United States began as religiously affiliated institutions. Beginning in the late 19th century and continuing over the course of the 20th century, the vast majority of these institutions engaged in a process of secularization through which faith moved from the center of academic life to the periphery. This paper elucidates a conceptual framework for understanding how and why Brigham Young University did not follow the path of secularization that so many research universities, originally religious in nature, pursued. It examines the steps that the university and its sponsoring institution (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) took during the mid-1930s and 1940s to ensure that the university maintained its religious affiliation. These actions laid a firm foundation upon which the university rests today.

La revisión de los Proyectos tanto de Enjuiciamiento Civil como Criminal del siglo pasado, núcleo central de este memoria, realmente fue larga, debido a que con sorpresa tomé conocimiento de que no existe una colección completa de los libros (Proyectos de Código de Procedimiento Civil y Penal) en una biblioteca pública, debiendo recorrer diversas bibliotecas ya mencionadas anteriormente, con el fin principal de revisar dichas obras. Sin olvidar el estudio de las partidas, los artículos de diversos autores publicadas en revistas de derecho histórico, la jurisprudencia y aquellos libros procesales de comienzos de siglo con las primeras opiniones y acotaciones de los profesores de derecho y abogados en relación a estos nuevos códigos de procedimiento, que de nuevos no tenían mucho, ya que fueron más bien una recopilación de las mismas leyes españolas que nos rigieron hasta incluso después de la independencia. En este trabajo se trató de destacar principalmente aquellos artículos de efectos religiosos que incidieron en nuestros Códigos de Procedimiento, su historia, evolución y texto definitivo. Es decir donde figuran frases o palabras relacionadas con un principio canónico. Así a modo de ejemplo nos encontramos con artículos o incisos de un artículo que en su redacción prescribe “No están obligados a declarar ... el arzobispo y los obispos; los vicarios generales y los vicarios capitulares”, Art. 191 N° 1 del Código de Procedimiento Penal, entre otros. Ahora en lo que se refiere a la conformación del mismo trabajo en sí, dividí esta memoria en cuatro capítulos; el primero basado en un estudio histórico procesal de la organización de los tribunales anterior a nuestra independencia y posterior a ella. El segundo capítulo se aboca exclusivamente a lo que fue el período de la codificación procesal en Chile y los primeros trabajos. En el tercer capítulo se realizó una suerte de enumeración de todos los Proyectos de Código de Enjuiciamiento o Procedimiento Civil y Criminal realizados el siglo XIX, por distintos y distinguidos hombres de leyes de nuestro país, transcribiendo a la vez en cada uno de ellos los artículos de efectos religiosos, correspondientes al tema que me llevó a realizar este trabajo. Finalmente el capítulo cuarto hace un análisis detallado de lo que fue la formación de nuestro actual Código de Procedimiento Civil de 1902 y Penal de 1906, la historia de los artículos de influencia religiosa, sus modificaciones, la opinión de la doctrina y jurisprudencia de tribunales. Finalmente tengo la certidumbre que algún error u errores pueden existir en esta obra, pero a la vez tengo la seguridad de que el trabajo y esfuerzo realizado durante meses de trabajo darán la necesaria motivación para leer este trabajo, esperando sea un aporte para el Derecho y aún más para el estudio de profesores y alumnos.

The aim of this case study was to identify factors that influenced the engagement of year five and six students (aged 10-12) in a religious education (RE) curriculum. The disengagement of year five and six students was reflected in the results of an RE survey (Catholic Education Office, 2006). Whilst students regarded RE as important and wished to do academically well, they did not find RE lessons to be particularly interesting, challenging or enjoyable. This qualitative research used a case study methodology. In this research the case was six composite classes of upper primary school students (combined classes of year five / six) and their religious education teachers within the context of a particular Catholic primary school. A case study is consistent with the chosen theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism and the constructionist epistemology underpinning this study. Using a constant comparative method, data from semi-structured and focus group interviews was drawn upon to explore the perceptions of student and teacher participants. Direct classroom observations were utilised to compare and contrast students’ and teachers’ perceptions. Six interrelated categories were found to be key factors for the engagement of this group of year five / six students in an RE curriculum: the teacher’s promotion of a mastery orientation; the teacher’s knowledge; a trusting classroom climate; positive teacher-student relationships; challenging tasks; and ICT-enabled learning. Three interrelated dimensions - affect, behaviour and cognition - constitute a prevalent view of engagement (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004). The findings arising from this study show how students were engaged in RE classroom learning across these three dimensions of engagement. As this is the first major research to explore student engagement in RE in an Australian Catholic primary school context, it makes a distinct contribution to the literature regarding student engagement in this particular curriculum area.

Cette recherche a pour but de comprendre, de formaliser et de catégoriser sous forme de typologie l’ensemble de ces stratégies. Ce travail de thèse enquête à la fois l’école publique et les écoles catholiques sous contrat d’association. Il s’appuie d’une part sur l’ensemble des recherches en sciences de l’éducation considérant la mise en œuvre d’un enseignement des faits religieux à l’école, sur l’histoire de la place des religions dans la société française depuis la fin du dix-neuvième siècle et la progressive construction et mise en œuvre du principe de laïcité en France. D’autre part, le développement de ce sujet s’organise autour d’investigations de terrain telles que des entretiens exploratoires, deux douzaines d’entretiens auprès d’enseignants en activités dans les écoles publiques et privées et, pour compléter, un questionnaire auquel près de deux-cents enseignants ont participé.L’originalité de cette étude est d’avoir réussi à élaborer une grille le lecture (une typologie) permettant de rendre intelligibles les discours et les activités d’un professeur qui enseigne un objet scolaire à dimension religieuse au-delà de tout discours prescriptif ou injonctif. Elle permet aussi de prédire plus efficacement la manière dont sera enseigné un objet de culture scolaire selon ses références religieuses, selon l’intensité de cette présence ou selon même le lieu où il est enseigné. Religions are present in schools in various forms. The teachers of cycle 3 declare that they choose strategies to teach the cultural notions present in the school curriculum of a particularly religious nature. The aim of this research is to understand, formalize and categorize all of these strategies in the form of a typology. This thesis work investigates both state school and state controlled independent Catholic schools . It is based on the one hand on all the research in education sciences considering the implementation of a teaching of religion fact at school, on the history of the place of religions in French society since the end of the nineteenth century and the progressive construction and implementation of the principle of secularism in France. On the other hand, the development of this subject is organized around field investigations such as exploratory interviews, two dozen interviews with teachers working in public and private schools and supplemented by a questionnaire to which nearly two hundred teachers participated. The originality of this study is to have succeeded in developing a reading grid (a typology) making it possible to clarify the speeches and the activities of a teacher who teaches a school notion with a religious dimension beyond any prescriptive speech or injunctive. It also makes it possible to predict more effectively the way in which an object of school culture will be taught according to its religious references, according to the intensity of this presence or according to the same place where it is taught. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a multifaceted social issue that affects the Christian faith community as it does the secular community. Though the literature reflects some understanding of general correlates and possible antecedents to IPV within the Christian community, the impact of religious and spiritual factors tends to be homogenized and is often misjudged. Allport's theory of intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation provided a platform for investigating Christian male-perpetrated IPV. This quantitative study utilized survey design and measured the impact of 10 select religious and spiritual factors on the probability of physical or sexual IPV perpetration. Archival data from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were used and included male participants ages 18 to 26 who nominally classified themselves as Catholic, Protestant, or Christian. Data were analyzed using binary logistic regression and results indicated that IPV perpetration could not be predicted from the 10 religious or spiritual factors. Given the geographic breadth and the size of the sample utilized, not finding a predictive model suggests there may be a lack of consistency in religious and spiritual orientation in these young males and elucidated analysis problems resulting from multicollinearity and the use of ordinal data. Though a predictive model for Christian male-perpetrated IPV was not found, the results of this study can contribute to social change by challenging existing ecclesiastical paradigms regarding which religious or spiritual factors, if any, impact Christian male-perpetrated IPV and which religious and spiritual factors should be addressed in faith-based batterers' programs targeting young adult males.

L’étude « des faits religieux » a longtemps été objet de débats en France mais depuis le début des années 2000, on rappelle qu’elle doit être enseignée quels que soient les cycles ou filières de l’Ecole de la République. La thèse analyse dans quelle mesure cette étude peut effectivement être un élément pertinent du processus social scolaire et ce, tout particulièrement en Histoire au Lycée. Elle part de l’hypothèse principale que des changements sont en jeu dans le processus de scolarisation « des faits religieux » et que ceux qui ont l’autorité éducative sont dans la condition de réinterpréter les religions en mêlant à leurs histoires, les enjeux et les objectifs d’apprentissage de la République et son projet d’intégration politique. Si cette perspective est heuristique, cela signifierait que « l’enseignement du fait religieux » se construit à chaque fois dans des conditions idéologiques, politiques ou géographiques particulières ; qu’il consisterait à produire de l’historicité par la construction d’une intelligibilité du monde social et par là même, par son influence sur les compréhensions « personnelles ».Ces hypothèses conduisent à un choix particulier de données sociales pertinentes à la fois pour les construire de manière plus précise et pour en tester la cohérence et la légitimité. Ainsi, pour couvrir ce que Basil Bernstein appelait le « Discours Pédagogique Officiel », nous avons d’abord sélectionné comme donnée le rapport de Régis Debray intitulé « l’enseignement du fait religieux dans l’école laïque », et dont l’ambition est le pilotage au plan national des formations pour les enseignants ou les élèves. Puis, nous avons recueilli les curricula formels, tous les programmes d’Histoire prescripteurs d’objectifs ou de manières de faire pour des publics-cibles d’élèves concernés. Ensuite, nous avons recueilli auprès d’autres sources d’information des éléments, sources descendant et se rapprochant des curricula réels (ceux s’élaborant en classe d’Histoire) et respectivement : rapports d’inspection pédagogiques, manuels, mémoires professionnels et entretiens auprès de professeurs de lycées généraux, technologiques et professionnels de l’académie d’Aix-Marseille. Aussi, nous avons voulu comparer cet ensemble d’informations avec celles émanant des acteurs gravitant au plus près des pratiques enseignantes et intervenant auprès d’eux par des cours, colloques, publications, articles ou encore émissions télévisées et radiophoniques. Dans cette comparaison nous nous sommes demandé en quel sens les professeurs ont l’autorité dernière de la mise en œuvre des curricula « réels » ? Quelles réponses ces derniers fournissent-ils aux injonctions tant politiques que sociales d’« enseigner le fait religieux » ? Comment et avec quelle distance reconfigurent-ils les cadrages leur étant soumis ? En résumé, si « l’enseignement du fait religieux » est sous-tendu par des conceptions politiques et sociales de l’Histoire scolaire et également, par un modèle d’individu à former, la question est de savoir : quels sont les outils pédagogiques ? Comment ces outils deviennent-ils des ressources réappropriées par les enseignants pour réaliser leur pratique pédagogique ? Et finalement, nous nous sommes demandé en quel sens une nouvelle professionnalisation du métier d’enseignant serait visée avec cet enseignement ?
The research observes the socio-cultural and political stakes of curricular change, in the transmission of educational knowledge on the « religious fact » within the curriculum of history at high-school. In France, since the late nineteenth century, changes have been undertaken in the development and circulation of this learning program. Agents having the educational authority recontextualise knowledge on religion, articulating history of religion with the issues and learning aims of the Republic's projects of integration and citizenship. On the one hand, history curriculum prescribes « why », « how » and « to whom » the institution has to transmit a political history of religion. On the other hand, textbook authors, pedagogic inspection bodies, teachers, even potential future teachers through their work projects, translate the official discourse. Studying the « official pedagogic discourse », its circulation and recontextualisation through various institutional agencies is the main purpose of this research. It rests upon a qualitative analysis, combining methodological tools such as content analysis (using Alceste software) and discourse analysis (enunciation theory and Belo's materialist theory of « narratives of practices of the body »)

Le développement des droits fondamentaux et le renouveau des revendications liées à l’appartenance religieuse ont fait de l’élaboration d’une méthodologie de prise en compte des convictions religieuses un enjeu théorique contemporain. Si la question des convictions religieuses, et plus généralement celle de la liberté de conscience et de religion, ont pu donner lieu à un certain nombre d’études en droit public ou en histoire du droit, à travers, notamment, le prisme du service public ou de la fonction publique ou encore du droit administratif des biens, ce sujet n’a pas été suffisamment exploré en droit privé ainsi qu’on droit comparé alors qu’il suscite, dans cette matière, un contentieux aussi abondant que régulier. Le juge judiciaire joue, à l’instar du juge administratif ou de la CEDH, un rôle singulier pour définir le sens et la portée du concept de « vivre ensemble ». Le développement des droits fondamentaux en droit international et européen a par ailleurs largement contribué à renouveler l’étude de cet objet aujourd’hui marqué par la globalisation du droit, la confrontation de cultures juridiques parfois en tension, l’assimilation du pluralisme – juridique, culturel, religieux – et donc nécessairement par le dialogue des juges.Partant de ce constat, ce travail doctoral a cherché à mettre en exergue d’une façon critique quels types de représentations, de raisonnements et d’épistémologies sont mobilisés par le juge judiciaire pour appréhender les convictions religieuses en France. The development of fundamental rights and the renewal of claims related to religious affiliation have made the development of a methodology for taking into account religious beliefs a contemporary theoretical issue. If the question of religious beliefs, and more generally that of freedom of conscience and religion, may have given rise to a number of studies in public law or in the history of law, through, in particular, the prism of the public service or the public service or the administrative law of property, this subject has not been sufficiently explored in private law as well as comparative law whereas it raises, in this matter, a litigation as abundant as regular. The judicial judge, like the administrative judge or the ECHR, plays a singular role in defining the meaning and scope of the concept of "living together". The development of fundamental rights in international and European law has also largely contributed to renewing the study of this object today marked by the globalization of law, the confrontation of legal cultures sometimes in tension, the assimilation of pluralism - legal, cultural, religious - and therefore necessarily through the dialogue of judges.Based on this observation, this doctoral work has sought to highlight in a critical way what types of representations, reasonings and epistemologies are mobilized by the judicial judge to apprehend religious beliefs in France. Relationships or connections with caring pro-social others (e.g., parents, teachers, school, friends, neighborhood, religion) serve as pro-resilience assets that may enhance children's abilities to cope with bullying. The purpose of this research study was to explore the roles of connectedness and religiosity as potential factors that could enhance resiliency against bullying among preadolescents in Puerto Rico (PR). This doctoral dissertation also addressed several gaps in the children's bullying, resilience and religiosity research literature. A sample of 426 community-based afterschool program preadolescents (ages 10-12 years old) participated in this exploratory, cross-sectional study, by completing a quantitative questionnaire in paper and pencil format. Data was analyzed overall, by location (i.e., San Juan Metropolitan Area (SJ Metro), Other Municipalities within PR), gender, age, and church attendance. Twenty percent of all participants were victimized by bullying at least 2-3 times per month. On the other hand, 5% of participants said they had been a bully 2-3 times per month. The most frequent type of bullying perpetration and victimization reported was verbal. Participants reported the highest levels of connectedness to school and the community, followed by connectedness to parents, teachers, mothers, religion, fathers, and friends. Most participants (71%) said they attended church regularly, but only 35% did so every week. Statistically significant differences were found by location, gender, age and church attendance. Connectedness and religiosity were correlated significantly to the participants' involvement in bullying at different roles. Surprisingly, having strong prosocial connections do not appear to have a reduction impact on participants' bullying victimization. Connectedness overall, to mothers, teachers and school was positively and significantly correlated to victimization, whereas connectedness to school was negatively correlated to perpetration. Bully-victimization was negatively correlated to connectedness overall, to parents, mothers, friends, teachers, and school. Multiple linear regression analyses found that higher levels in connectedness to mother and connectedness to the community accounted for a 60% decrease and a 45% increase, respectively, in bullying perpetration among non-church attending participants. In terms of religiosity, analyses distinguished between participants' engagement in private and public religiosity practices. Private religiosity was negatively correlated to being a bullying perpetrator, and positively correlated to being a bystander. Public religiosity was positively correlated to bullying victimization. The self-report of religiosity did not affect the odds of being a perpetrator, victim or bully-victim. Specifically among SJ Metro participants, the self-report of private religiosity or the combination of both private and public religiosity reduced the odds of being a bystander. Multiple linear regression analyses found that among non-church attending participants, a 1-unit change in public religiosity acccounted for a 62% increase in bullying perpetration. While the religiosity-related findings from this study's correlation analyses were consistent with the literature, regression analyses' findings were unexpected and warrant additional research. This study goes beyond solely school-based approaches to bullying research and prevention, by utilizing a non-school sample of low-income preadolescents who attend afterschool programs at local community-based organizations. Furthermore, its focus on a younger age group (i.e., preadolescents) is consistent with the resiliency literature and the need to enhance resilience factors earlier in childhood. Findings also consider the multiplicity of actors involved in bullying (i.e., perpetrators, victims, bully/victims, or bystanders), and distinguishes between direct and indirect types of bullying. Consistent with recommendations from previous research, a socio-ecological approach was followed to explore the role of connectedness to others at the individual, family, school, peer, religious and community levels, as well as the role of religiosity as an external asset to enhance resilience in preadolescents. This exploratory study contributes to our understanding of bullying among PR preadolescents, and serve to inform the development of prevention programs, strategies and policies at the school and community level. Research on bullying in PR is limited, making it increasingly challenging for PR schools, community- and faith-based organizations to collaborate in multilevel interventions that specifically address the needs of PR's children.

This study is about the coverage of religious conflict in Nigerian newspapers. Although it was not originally intended to compare the coverage of the conflicts between papers in the North and those in the South of Nigeria, the perceived differential situations of the media in the two regions necessitated such a comparison. It is a qualitative research project consisting of three studies: First, there was a comparative critical examination, through critical discourse analysis, of the reports by two newspapers, THISDAY and Daily Trust, during the November 2008 religious violence in Jos, a central Nigerian city. Second, by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis interview data obtained through the semi-structured technique from Nigeria were critically analysed. Third, also applying interpretative phenomenological analysis data obtained by means of focus group interviewing from Nigeria were critically analysed. The results in all three cases suggest the newspapers are regionally, ethnically and religiously inclined; they are particularly affected by factors like ownership, location, staffing and audience perception, which determine how they tailor reports; the newspapers are not usually the cause of religious crises but they stoke the problem through biased and sometimes inflammatory reports; and, although, they are very vibrant factors like Nigeria’s economic recession, political culture – arguably comprising of violence, corruption and tribalism – and new media/technology and so on, contribute towards making their role in the conflicts one of amplification rather than mitigation. The thesis also suggests the application of Allport’s (1954) contact hypothesis using the media as a conduit towards de-emphasising dissimilarities, while emphasising similarities to reduce tension and prevent conflict.

Psycho-religious factors of posttraumatic growth (PTG) had been widely studied, yet only a few studies had examined the psycho-spiritual factors with stress-related growth (SRG). In order to measure spirituality locally, Study One explored the validity of the Spiritual Transcendence Scale (STS) (Piedmont, 2004) in a 415 adult students sample. Results of the study supported the internal consistency reliability of the overall STS and its concurrent validity with the Religious subscale of the Social Axioms Scale (Leung, Lam, Bond, Conway, Gornick, Amponash et al., 2012) and the Faith Maturity Scale (short-form) (Hui, Ng, Mok, Lau, & Cheung, 2011). Contrary to our prediction, the three-factor structure of the original STS was not supported in Hong Kong population. In accord with previous studies on psycho-religious factors of PTG (for example, Stanton, Bower & Low, 2006), age, gender, personality and spirituality were hypothesized to predict SRG in context of academic stress in Study Two. A total of 182 adult student samples were recruited. Results of the study only supported that spirituality as well as extraverted and agreeable in personalities predicted SRG, but not the other measured variables. Besides, age was the only variable moderated the relationship between academic stress and SRG as hypothesized. Last but not least, consistent with previous studies by Kleim and Ehlers (2010) and our hypothesis, a curvilinear relationship between SRG and depressive symptom was supported. Findings of the present study shed light to clinicians about the conceptualization of SRG and direction for potential psychological treatment.

This research focuses on the development and study of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that support religious practices and the use of standpoint theory in ICT evaluation studies. Three phases makeup this work: formative studies to understand how megachurches, their members and leaders use ICT in ways tied to their Protestant Christian faith and the design of a technology probe, a photo sharing website named ChurchShare. The final and most significant phase is the evaluation of this probe in two churches. I deployed ChurchShare in a Christian church comprised of U.S. born individuals and argue this initial deployment took place with â ideal users,â or those I intended to use the application and who represent the traditional targets of HCC (Human-Centered Computing) research. More than 200 photos were uploaded to ChurchShare and findings suggest that the technology probe was successfully integrated into the churchâ s worship services. Standpoint theory guided the second deployment study that was conducted with individuals who are marginalized in HCC researchâ "Kenyan immigrants. Participants rejected ChurchShare and zero pictures were uploaded to the website. I compare findings from both deployments and conclude that conducting ICT evaluation studies with marginalized users leads to more objective findings than conducting such studies with ideal users. I end with a discussion describing how standpoint theory can be incorporated into HCC, focusing on how this approach offers a practical way for researchers to uncover value differences between themselves and the people who interact with their work.

Research has consistently demonstrated a negative association between religiosity and college students’ alcohol consumption. However, few studies have explored the unique roles religious beliefs and behaviors might play in this relationship. Using 283 underage college students, we investigated the influence of internal and external factors on drinking behaviors for students with differing combinations of religious beliefs and religious behaviors. Tests of mediation and mediated-moderation were used to help explain the unique influences beliefs and behaviors have on alcohol consumption. Results indicated that religious beliefs only functioned as a protective-factor against underage drinking when accompanied by religious behaviors; students with high religious beliefs but low religious behaviors exhibited the highest rates of alcohol consumption. Positive affect experienced during alcohol consumption mediated the relationship between religious beliefs and alcohol consumption. Drinking norms and social availability of alcohol mediated the association between religious behaviors and alcohol consumption. Both positive affect and negative affect were found to partially mediate the interaction between religious beliefs and behaviors on student alcohol consumption. Findings from this study may aid in the formulation of a more comprehensive model for the relationship between religiosity and alcohol consumption in young college students.

The discussion of spirituality and religion (S/R) in social work is a prevalent topic within the field. Literature suggests that social workers do not feel competent or comfortable discussing or utilizing S/R in practice. This study focused on identifying factors that may be causing resistance in social workers from the Inland Empire of Southern California towards addressing S/R with their clients. The researchers interviewed eight social workers from diverse areas of practice via telephone and in-person. Data was collected via audio-recording and later transcribed for thematic analysis. Participants were asked an array of questions including their own experience with their spirituality and current comfort level with asking their clients about S/R. Through the findings, it appears that social workers’ comfort level stems from various aspects including a sense of unease regarding their knowledge on various belief systems. The results indicated that once clients are asked about their spiritual and/or religious beliefs, clients are able to engage in a discussion about their definition of their own beliefs and determine the direction of the topic.

Religion is important to many Americans and the way they approach life, but psychologists are less likely than the general population to be religious. Because of this, it is important to not only know how religious commitment can influence clients' outcome and experience in psychotherapy, but also how the level of match between client and therapist religious commitment might impact those variables. The current study was undertaken in order to investigate how client religious commitment impacts distress at the beginning and end of treatment, how therapist religious commitment impacts the use of religious/spiritual interventions in therapy, and whether the level of match between client and therapist religious commitment predicts client perception of therapy and/or outcome. Seven hundred and thirty individual therapy clients at a university counseling center completed measures of religious commitment, symptom distress, and concerns about therapy throughout their course of treatment. Forty-four therapists also completed a measure of religious commitment in addition to session-by-session checklists detailing what types of interventions they used in each appointment with participating clients. Client religious commitment was found to significantly predict lower initial distress (B = -0.77, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.07, 95% CI [-0.97, -0.57]) and lower distress at the end of therapy(B = -0.32, p = 0.001, R2 = 0.34, 95% CI [-0.51, -0.14]), and fewer concerns about therapy predicted better outcomes (B = 2.04, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.38, 95% CI [1.52, 2.52]). Contrary to the findings of previous research, therapist religious commitment did not predict use of religious/spiritual interventions in therapy (B = 0.05, p = 0.062, R2 = 0.09, 95% CI [-0.002, 0.11]). Finally, level of match between client and therapist religious commitment was not related to client concerns about therapy (B = -0.002, p = 0.161, 95% CI [-2.40, 9.57]) or client outcomes B = -0.014, p = 0.120, 95% CI [-0.03, 0.004]). Possible explanations and influencing factors are put forth and the findings are discussed in the context of a highly religious population.

Religiously motivated violence is and always will be a relevant topic. To address and effectively counter contemporary violent groups, it is important to investigate similar historic groups. This thesis attempts to answer the research question: During the Radical Reformation, why did some Anabaptist groups accept the use of violence while others did not, and how did the movement evolve to pacifism? To answer this question, this study utilizes a mixed methodology of case study analysis and social network analysis of Anabaptist leaders during the 16th century. This thesis argues that violent ideology is largely a function of three factors: charismatic leadership, isolation, and apocalypticism. The interaction of these factors led to the emergence of Anabaptist groups that embraced the use of violence. However, groups’ internal characteristics can also lead them away from violence. In the case of the Anabaptists, social proximity assisted leaders with a counter-message to speak effectively to violent ultra-radical factions. The goal of this thesis is to identify characteristics of religious groups that may signal the potential for future violence, while also providing insight into which leaders may be capable of re-directing groups that have become violent.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the underlying factors of the conflict between Christians and Muslims in the Central African Republic (CAR) that started in 2013. It is argued that political factors played an important role in the coup d'état that ousted President Francois Bozize - the event that marked the start of the civil war. Social factors were mainly responsible for how the civil war turned into sectarian violence. Furthermore, it is argued that a number of economic factors did not directly cause the sectarian violence, but instead contributed to the length of the conflict. The way broader factors contributed to the conflict (the CAR's weakened state and lawlessness for instance) are also discussed.

This thesis starts by describing the legal foundation of religious liberty in the United States and the evolvement of the religion clause jurisprudence. Then follows an outline of the main legal theories on religious liberty. It continues to describe a case study conducted on how Americans citizens perceive the protection of their religious liberty. Upon this there is a chapter where the detailed findings from the case study are described in juxtaposition to the relevant jurisprudence and how this can be applied to the overall legal framework protecting religious liberty.  The final chapter is a discussion on what conclusions that can be drawn.

Chrisler’s (2017) Theoretical Framework of Parental Reactions When a Child Comes Out as Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual suggests that parental reactions to having a non-heteronormative child are impacted by a process of cognitively appraising information about their child’s identity and experiencing and coping with emotional responses, both of which are influenced by contextual factors such as a parent’s value system. However, some religious values can challenge parents in the process of accepting a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) child. The purpose of this study was to test a model that examines the influence of cognitive-affective factors (cognitive flexibility, emotional regulation), religious-value based factors (religious fundamentalism, parental sanctification), and gender and sexual identity on self-reported parental acceptance. Participants were 663 parents of LGBT children who submitted responses to an online survey. A Tobit regression with a single-indicator latent variable approach revealed that religious fundamentalism, parental sanctification, the control component of cognitive flexibility, parent gender, and parent sexual identity significantly predicted parental acceptance. Lower religious fundamentalism, higher parental sanctification, and higher cognitive flexibility scores were associated with parental acceptance of an LGBT child. Participants identifying as a woman or LGB parent also significantly predicted acceptance. Implications of findings are discussed.

The purpose and aim of this research was to analyze if Lewis R. Rambos conversion the- ory can be applied to describe religious radicalization towards violent Islamic terrorism or not. The research has analyzed and investigated if there are any differences or similarities, regarding risk factors and existential dimensions before the attacks of three terrorists; Rakhmat Akilov, Mohamed Bouhlel and Salman Abedi. The report further considers what role Melder ́s eight existential dimensions play in violent Islamic radicalization. The analyzis is based on a deductive method where, as said above, the conversion theory, existential dimensions and risk factors are used to answer the research questions. This study analyses and encodes the material by hand with paper and pen, even though the program “OpenCode” is more commonly used in a thesis of this proportion, due to it provided a more flexibility. The conclusion of this study is that Rambo ́s theory can elucidate violent reli- gious Islamic radicalization but as the theory tends to be too broad and vague it should be used in combination with other theories to be able to fully explain the conversion. Other- wise the theory tends to be too broad and vague. Results of analyzing the risk factors and existential dimensions, shows that there are more similarities between the three terrorists than differences and that the existential dimensions do play an important role in the religious radicalization even though this theo- ry also can be to broad and vague because of a tendency by the dimensions to overlap.
