The public place of science and technology in Britain underwent a dramatic change during the first half of the nineteenth century. At the end of the eighteenth century, natural philosophy was still on the whole the province of a relatively small group ofaficionados. London possessed only one institution devoted to the pursuit of natural knowledge: the Royal Society. The Royal Society also published what was virtually the only journal dealing exclusively with scientific affairs: thePhilosophical Transactions. By 1851, when the Great Exhibition opened its doors in Hyde Park to an audience of spectators that could be counted in the millions, the pursuit of science as a national need, its relationship to industrial progress were acceptable, if not uncontested facts for many commentators.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the relationship between scientific research and different types of innovation. For this, it is shown that the innovation process has a systemic character, and science is present as an integral element in the implementation of each of the considered types of innovations – production, organizational and social. A brief description of these types is given and it is shown that the contribution of science is carried out at different stages of the innovation process, considered as a process of solving a particular problem. The most significant contribution of sciences (especially natural) is to industrial innovation; social sciences have some potential to contribute to organizational innovations; the problems,that are subjects of social innovations have no scientific solving whereby the social sciences can only provide the development of options for innovations, but not the choice among them.

The relationship between knowledge management practices and quality production has not received much attention. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first objective is to investigate this relationship in the Malaysian manufacturing and service firms. The second objective is to investigate the mediating role of these firms' innovation on this relationship. Six hypothesised relationships were tested using a sample of 201 manufacturing and service firms in Malaysia. The results show that the two dimensions of knowledge management have a significant positive effect on quality production. Furthermore the results showed that innovation does not mediate the relationship between knowledge management and quality production. The implications of the study as well as suggestions for future studies are also discussed.

The main objective of this study is to determine the relationship between Lean Management (LM) and World Class Manufacturing (WCM) practices of aeronautical company in Italy. The methodology should help managers to select those principles and tools of Lean Manufacturing and WCM that are expected to be effective in their company. The research aims to integrate the two models and to achieve a global manufacturing performance in order to maximize the company performance. To this end, a methodological approach, based on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), is proposed to quantitatively evaluate relationships between LM and WCM. The proposed model allows to identify key factors of Lean and WCM practices and to measure the quantitative relationship between these strategies. The final output is a dynamic analysis designed to identify how relations change with each individual factor.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the existing knowledge about the relationships between advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), lean manufacturing (LM), agile manufacturing (AM), and business performance. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire-based survey was performed to collect data from 189 Iranian automobile part manufacturers. Statistical analysis of hypothesized relationships was conducted via partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings AMT significantly contributes to the development of both LM and AM. These manufacturing systems can co-exist in one system, and LM is a precursor to AM. LM contributes to operational performance whereas AM improves marketing performance and financial performance. Research limitations/implications Relying on the cross-sectional data of this research, and lack of generalizability of findings are key limitations. An interesting direction for future research would be to empirically offer a hybrid lean-agile approach and further map the mechanism through which this hybrid approach can be achieved in practice. Practical implications Both LM and AM are information-intensive and highly supported by AMT. They contribute to different aspects of business performance. Pursuing both cost-leadership strategy and product mix flexibility is viable via hybridizing the lean and agile systems. Originality/value This study is among the first to address issues related to the lean-AM relationship among developing countries. This study is unique in the sense it shows the mechanism through which the value of AMT is truly transformed to performance improvement.

The study has the general objective to determine the extent of the relationship between technological innovativeness and firm growth using small scale manufacturing firms in Lagos State. The independent variable of technological innovativeness was operationalized into product-oriented innovativeness and process-oriented innovativeness, while the dependent variables of firm growth were operationalized into sales growth, employment growth, growth in firm size and market shares growth. This study employs exploration correlational research design. The sample population of a small scale enterprise in Lagos State accounts for eleven thousand and forty-four (11,044). Yamane’s formula was used to get the sample size of three hundred and eighty-six (386), this was approximated to the nearest hundred to have 400 for equal distribution. Data gathered for this study was analyzed using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation analysis in order to determine the relationship between them and a simple linear regression analysis to establish the extent of relationship between them using statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 2.3. The correlation statistic shows that the linkage between the independent and dependent variables was low to moderate that product-oriented innovativeness shows a moderate positive relationship with sales and employment growth, while the process-oriented innovativeness shows low positive relationship with firm size thus allowing for regression analysis.

ABSTRACKIndonesia ranks fourth in the world out of 15 countries whose manufacturing industries contribute more than 10% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Nowadays, one of the consequences of the rapid development of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia is related to work productivity. Each person's work productivity is not the same, one of them depends on the availability of nutrients in the body. Lack of nutritional consumption for someone from standard needs will affect health conditions, activities, and work productivity. Nutritional substances in workers also affect fitness in addition to other factors such as age, health status, nutritional status, nutritional status, gender, and psychological conditions. Based on the description above, it is necessary to study the relationship between nutritional status and physical fitness of workers in manufacturing companies in Indonesia. The study was cross sectional on 120 workers from 6 manufacturing companies in Indonesia which was conducted using cluster sampling. Assessment of individual characteristics was conducted by direct interview. Assessment of nutritional intake uses the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and the results were categorized as appropriate and inappropriate based on the 2019 nutritional adequacy figure for the Indonesian population. The fitness assessment (physical capacity) used a six-minute walking test by an occupational specialist and was converted to Meters and categorized with a cut off of 4.5 Mets to be sufficient or insufficient. About one third of manufacturing workers were centrally obese. Characteristics The dietary intake according to the recommendation were only about 10%, namely the appropriate carbohydrate intake 11.7% (Frequency 8.46 times (533.22 gr)), suitable fat 12.5% (Frequency 2.75 times (57.14 gr)), and suitable protein 10% (Frequency 6.55 times (101.77 gr)). The physical capacity of manufacturing workers in Indonesia was categorized as sufficient as much as 75.8% of their workload. Factors that affect physical capacity, namely age ≥ 40 years have 4.37 times less physical capacity and protein intake affected physical capacity / fitness for workers (p = 0.02). About a third of manufacturing workers were centrally obese. The characteristic of food intake in accordance with the recommended nutritional adequacy of the Indonesian population was only about 10%. The physical capacity of manufacturing workers in Indonesia was categorized as sufficient as much as 75.8% of their workload. Factors that affected physical capacity were age and protein intake. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between organizational ambidexterity, the ability of companies to explore new and to exploit existing processes simultaneously, and manufacturing performance as represented by the sand cone model. Moreover, the paper analyses the impact of stable and dynamic environments on this relationship. Design/methodology/approach A set of research questions are tested using structural equation modeling on a sample of 231 Spanish manufacturing companies. Findings Results illustrate a significant relationship between ambidexterity as the basis and enabler for manufacturing performance improvements, building on the sand cone model and its dimensions of quality, delivery, cost, and flexibility. This relationship is further emphasized when companies work in a dynamic environment. Practical implications The study contributes to practice by investigating the important and yet under-explored relationships of ambidexterity, the sand cone model, performance, and a company’s wider market environment. Findings suggest a positive relationship between the sand cone model and ambidexterity capability. Originality/value This study adds to the limited theoretical and empirical understanding of the relationships between ambidexterity, the sand cone model, environmental dynamism, and performance. It also contributes through a set of empirical data derived from Spanish manufacturing companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship of strategic manufacturing effectiveness utilizing the four-stage model of Hayes and Wheelwright (H-W) with overall performance of manufacturing, market alignment and production competence (PC). In addition, it attempts to understand the relationship of strategic manufacturing effectiveness with manufacturing capability development modes, strategic groups of companies and the nature of improvement programs being employed. Design/methodology/approach Structured questionnaire was used to capture data from manufacturing organizations. Responses from managers of 47 Indian manufacturing companies were used to test the seven propositions that were developed to examine the paradigms of manufacturing competence. Findings The analysis revealed that the strategic manufacturing effectiveness of manufacturing companies based on H-W’s four-stage model has significant positive correlation with the overall performance of manufacturing and PC of the company. Further, the analysis substantiated the relationship of strategic manufacturing effectiveness with capability development process and the nature of improvement programs. Research limitations/implications This exploratory study is based on a small sample of manufacturing companies with diversity and hence it may not be representative of all industry sectors. Second, it has used several scales for measuring the relevant constructs which themselves are not proven, hence, the findings should be taken with caution. Originality/value This is an initial research focussing on the relationships among different elements of manufacturing competence such as manufacturing capabilities, PC, manufacturing capability development mode and overall performance of manufacturing with strategic manufacturing effectiveness using H-W model. H-W model was primarily proposed as an audit tool for managers, was hitherto not adequately studied in relation to other paradigms of manufacturing competence.

Purpose Given the importance of frontline employees in implementing the service strategy, the purpose of this paper is to examine whether service-orientated human resource management (SHRM) practices are important organizational antecedents to help manufacturing firms gain the benefit of the service strategy. Furthermore, the paper also explores whether SHRM practices promote manufacturing firms’ performance through demand-side search. Design/methodology/approach This study employs survey methodology to examine a research model that explores whether and how SHRM practices influence manufacturing firms’ performance through demand-side search. Data from 151 high-tech manufacturing firms in a science park of China are analyzed to test the research model. Findings This study finds that SHRM practices can enhance manufacturing firms’ performance, and demand-side search plays a mediating role in this relationship. Research limitations/implications Depending on a single science park in China to provide cross-sectional subjective data for the core variables and the choice of firms limits the capacity to generalize the findings. Practical implications These findings suggest that during transition to service business model, manufacturing firms should design supported organizational systems, especially SHRM practices, and commit to demand-side search as an efficient means to gain the benefit of the service strategy. Originality/value The study highlights the crucial role of SHRM practices in the implementation of the service strategy, as well as the mediating role of demand-side search. These results provide some new insights to explain the inconsistent findings in the servitization literature.

This study investigates the “Internet of things” (IoT) and “Circular Economy” (CE) relationship in the current scientific literature focused on case studies or use cases on manufacturing context. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to map the science centered on “case studies” with respect to the “IoT” and “CE” connection, contributing to fill the gap of the subject that is already relevant to the scientific community and practitioners. The research methodology consists of developing a bibliometric study, employing PRISMA process, whose data is obtained from the Web of Science database. The VOSviewer was the computer program selected for the bibliometric analysis. The Web of Science (WoS) analysis tool supports VOSviewer. The papers were analyzed according to network analysis principles. The qualitative content analysis complements these results. The results show the high-frequency keywords and topics associated with the theme “IoT and CE”; the most cited papers; the intellectual structure of “IoT and CE”; the new emerging themes in scientific research; and social networks among the researchers. The paper’s contribution is the results of the bibliometric analysis and a better understanding of the relationship of “IoT” and “CE” by the “case studies” addressed in the empirical investigations.

The demand for mass custom parts is increasing, estimating the cost of parts to a high degree of efficiency is a matter of great concern to most manufacturing companies. Under the premise of machining operations, cost estimation based on features and processes yields high estimation accuracy, but it necessitates accurately identifying a part’s machining features and establishing the relationship between the feature and the cost. Accordingly, a feature recognition method based on syntactic pattern recognition is proposed herein. The proposed method provides a more precise feature definition and easily describes complex features using constraints. To establish the relationships between geometric features, processing modes, and cost, this study proposes a method of describing the features and the processing mode using feature quantities and adopts deep learning technology to establish the relationship between feature quantities and cost. By comparing a back propagation (BP) network and a convolutional neural network (CNN) it can be concluded that a CNN using the “RMSProp” optimizer exhibits higher accuracy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the levels of lean manufacturing (LM) and supply chain relationships (SCR) in the manufacturing sector in Thailand, and analyze the differences across organizational characteristics (i.e. firm size, nationality of firms, manufacturing system, product brand, export level, nationality of customers, nationality of suppliers and existence of supply chain management (SCM) departments) on LM and SCR. Design/methodology/approach The measurement instruments of LM and SCR were developed and validated by experts, pilot test and various statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics were applied to investigate the levels of LM and SCR in the sample firms. Independent samples t-test and ANOVA were employed to examine the differences across organizational characteristics on overall LM and SCR, and their individual sub-construct. Findings It was found that the measurement instruments of LM and SCR were reliable and valid. Manufacturers in Thailand emphasized internal LM at the operational level much more extensively than external SCR. Overall, for LM, this study revealed significant differences across firm size, nationality of firms, manufacturing systems, export levels, nationality of customers and existence of SCM departments. For SCR, there were significant differences across export level, nationality of suppliers and existence of SCM departments. Differences across contexts of individual sub-construct of LM and SCR were analyzed and discussed. Originality/value This study is one of the first to present insights into the existence of LM and SCR and into the differences across organizational contexts on LM, SCR and their sub-constructs in the manufacturing sector in Thailand. The methodologies and findings are applicable to other developing countries.

There is fierce conflict between theoretical research of servitization which has high potential for manufacturing companies to build sustainable competitive advantages and the practice of manufacturing companies which invest a lot in servitization without getting the expected benefit. This study aimed at filling the aforementioned research gap to examine the relationship between servitization and operational performance. In line with the focus of information and knowledge within this study, we also examine the moderating effect of cross-function integration. Based on the IMSS-IV database, we test these relationships. The results showed the following: (1) The result suggests that service support products has a positive impact on operational performance while the relationship between service support clients’ actions and operational performance is U-shaped; (2) the relationship between two types of service and operational performance is not moderated by cross-function integration. This study contributes to the current literature and practice on servitization and cross-function integration.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer deeper insight into the relationship between a subsidiary’s internal integration in its manufacturing network and subsidiary-level operational performance by taking into account the country context of the respective subsidiary. Design/methodology/approach – Subsidiary-level information is gathered using the sixth round of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey, thus including 507 subsidiaries from 22 countries. Country context is operationalised using the Global Competitiveness Report published by the World Economic Forum. Findings – The findings reveal that internal integration has a positive influence on operational performance improvement. Country context acts as a moderator on this relationship: subsidiaries in less developed countries are only able to improve their effectiveness (quality, flexibility, delivery), while developed country subsidiaries gain both effectiveness and efficiency (cost, time) benefits from internal integration. Research limitations/implications – The unit of analysis is the knowledge-receiving subsidiary without taking the characteristics of the sending unit or that of the whole network of subsidiaries into account. Based on the context-dependency of the integration-performance relationship found in this paper, a future research agenda is proposed including further factors (absorptive capacity, knowledge complementarity, organisational practices) that could influence this relationship. Practical implications – Subsidiary managers in less developed countries should strive to acquire intra-network knowledge related to effectiveness, while managers in developed countries can expect both efficiency and effectiveness benefits. Originality/value – A large-scale survey encompassing subsidiaries from both emerging and developed countries is used to offer deeper insight into the relationship between internal integration and performance. The paper provides a possible explanation for previous mixed findings on this relationship. The differentiation between efficiency and effectiveness performance shows that country context represents an important factor that moderates the integration-performance relationship.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how the critical relationship between talent management (TM) and manufacturing competitiveness (MC) can be better understood through national culture. The authors specifically focus on the moderation effect of the long-term orientation (LTO) culture dimension over this relationship. Design/methodology/approach The exploration of the moderation effect is carried out by comparing the impact of LTO on the hypothesized linear relationship between the Manufacturing Competitiveness Index (MCI) and different aspects of the Global Talent Management Competitiveness Index (GTCI). The authors compare whether LTO had any improvement in the ability of the different TM pillars to better explain some of the variation of MCI scores among the considered countries. Findings The authors found enough support for most of the proposed hypotheses, with results showing a positive relationship between MCI and GTCI. The authors conclude that differences in this relationship can be better explained using the national culture dimension of LTO. The managerial impact of such findings suggests that manufacturing strategists need to consider deeper knowledge of the regional national culture when assessing investments locations. Research limitations/implications This research provides a conceptual foundation for the relationship among LTO, TM and MC, but has some limitations due to its exploratory nature. These limitations are related to using secondary data that can be updated in the future, excluding other national culture dimensions that can also relate to the previous variables, and also not considering some relevant political and economic parameters. Practical implications The findings of this paper will help to understand the positive relationship among TM, MC and the LTO dimension of national culture; better explain variations that exist in the impact of different TM practices on MC; and give managers some knowledge for global manufacturing excellence decisions within national cultural context. Originality/value To the authors’ knowledge, no previous work captured the relation between MC and TM from a national culture perspective. With more manufacturing economies evolving toward being more knowledge based, research focusing on how talents and skills required for such evolution are related to national cultures is becoming more critical.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to theorise and develop seven dimensions (strategic supplier partnership, level of information sharing, quality of information sharing, customer service management, internal lean practices, postponement and total quality management) into a supply chain management (SCM) practices (SCMPs) construct and studies its causal relationship with the conceptualised constructs of supply chain performance (SCP) and manufacturing firms’ performance (MFP). The study also explores the causal relationship between SCP and MFP. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through a survey questionnaire responded by 249 Jordanian manufacturing firms. The relationships proposed in the developed theoretical framework were represented through three hypotheses: H1 – there is a significant relationship between SCMPs and SCP; H2 – there is a significant relationship between SCMPs and MFP; and H3 – there is a significant relationship between SCP and MFP. Linear regression, ANOVA and Pearson correlation were used to test the hypotheses. The results were further validated using structural equation modelling. Findings The results indicate that SCMPs have a positive effect on SCP (H1), which in turn also positively affect MFP (H3). Despite this intermediary positive effect of SCMP on MFP through SCP, the study also suggests that SCMPs have a direct and positive effect on MFP (H2). Practical implications This study provides hard evidence indicating that higher levels of SCMPs can lead to enhanced supply chain and firms’ performance. It also provides SC managers of manufacturing firms with a multi-dimensional operational measure of the construct of SCMPs for assessing the comprehensiveness of the SCMPs of their firms. Originality/value This study is among the very first SCM researches conducted on the Jordanian manufacturing sector, particularly, in relation to the practices that manufacturing firms in this country need to adopt to make their supply chains a solid competitive vehicle for their development. The results have broader implications for all manufacturing companies, particularly in developing economies where the growth of manufacturing and the development of integrated supply chains are key stages in economic development.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to find the relationships among advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), innovation, export and firm performance by using data obtained from 310 Turkish manufacturing firms. Design/methodology/approach A survey study was performed to obtain data from manufacturing firms. Multiple-item scales were adapted from the literature to conduct the survey in this study. Data were collected from five cities located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region in Turkey (Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Kilis, Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa). Structural equation modeling was utilized to investigate the relationships among AMT, innovation, export and firm performance in Turkish manufacturing firms operating in several industries. The direct and indirect relations between these variables are examined in the proposed conceptual model. In addition, the complex relations including in the proposed model are assessed in detail through the mediation analysis. Findings Six of the proposed ten hypotheses related to manufacturers are validated by the empirical evidence from manufacturing companies in Turkey. Significant findings obtained in this study include the following: there are strong positive associations between the use of AMT and innovation and between export and firm performance. In addition, innovation mediates the relationship between AMT and firm performance and between AMT and export. Finally, export mediates the relationship between AMT and firm performance and between innovation and firm performance. It is expected that the results obtained from this empirical analysis will help decision makers and managers to construct a good technology and production management strategy for manufacturing systems. Originality/value In this study, a novel conceptual model is proposed to examine the relationships among AMT, innovation, export and firm performance via the use of survey responses from 310 Turkish manufacturing firms. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first study that proposes such a conceptual model in the literature.

To gather data, structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The study population was the manufacturing firms in Nairobi; the respondents were the designated heads of procurement of these firms. 200 heads of procurement were selected using stratified random sampling. Once collected, data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.Quantitative data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The qualitative data generated was analyzed by use of Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20Results and conclusion: The correlation analysis to determine the relationship between continuous improvement and performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya, Pearson correlation coefficient computed and tested at 5% significance level. The results indicate that there is a positive relationship (r=0.387) between and continuous improvement performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya. In addition, the researcher found the relationship to be statistically significant at 5% level (p=0.000, <0.05). The correlation analysis to determine the relationship between supplier management and performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya, Pearson correlation coefficient computed and tested at 5% significance level. The results indicate that there is a positive relationship (r=0.598) supplier management and performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya. In addition, the researcher found the relationship to be statistically significant at 5% level (p=0.000, <0.05). The correlation analysis to determine the relationship between customer focus and performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya, Pearson correlation coefficient computed and tested at 5% significance level. The results indicate that there is a positive relationship (r= 0.690) between customer focus and performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya. In addition, the researcher found the relationship to be statistically significant at 5% level (p=0.000, <0.05).Policy recommendation: Finally, the study recommended that manufacturing firms should embrace procurement total quality practices so as to improve their performance and further researches should to be carried out in other institutions to find out if the same results can be obtained.

Automatic generation of manufacturing setup planning is studied in this work. The mathematical model to describe the tolerance information and datum-machining feature relationship has been formulated based on extended graphics. By means of the transformation between the feature tolerance relationship graph(FTG) and the datum-machining feature relationship graph (DMG), the algorithm to automatically generate setup planning has been given based on the tolerance analysis and manufacturing resources capability model. The algorithm can identify the machining feature and datum, optimize setup groups based on the manufacturing resource capability and tolerance analysis, as well as minimize the influence of the locating error stack-up on the machining quality. Finally, a case study of setup planning is presented to verify the feasibility of the methodology.

Bottleneck identification is of great interest in discrete manufacturing fields, as they limit the system’s throughput. However, the bottlenecks are difficult to accurately identify due to the instability and complexity of discrete manufacturing systems. This paper proposes a dynamic bottleneck identification method (DBI-BS) that is based on effective buffers and fine-grained machine states to identify bottlenecks accurately. First, the complex manufacturing system (CMS) with strong coupling between elements is decoupled into several independent parts under the guidance of the effective buffer theory. Then, the machine activity duration method is improved through further fine-grained division, and the machine states are described by the timing flow model. The method to quantify the degree of bottleneck that restricts the system throughput (TH) is proposed on the basis of the turning point theory, and the one-to-one mapping relationship between the simulated and authentic complex manufacturing systems is also studied. Simulation results show that the DBI-BS can effectively identify dynamic bottlenecks in complex manufacturing processes, and the decoupling of complex systems can effectively improve the accuracy of dynamic bottleneck identification.

This research aims to investigate the impact of lean production strategy (LPS) and flexible manufacturing strategy (FMS) on financial performance (FP) in the Nigerian manufacturing sector (NMS). A quantitative research approach was applied, and a simple random sampling technique was chosen to identify the samples for this study. For this reason, data were collected from 101 manufacturing companies in Nigeria and a statistical tool; Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26 was used to analyze the data. The result shows a significant relationship among the factors examined. Among the factors, the independent variable (LPS) had shown the most decisive impact compared to (FMS) on the dependent variable (FP) the study suggested. Findings from the study contribute and support Porter’s generic theory on existing literature, and practically to the Nigerian manufacturing companies by providing insights into this research area.

Both manufacturing industry and service industry rely on service innovations for success and competitive advantage. This paper theoretically analyzes the role of market orientation, relationship marketing and knowledge management and proposes a theoretical framework for their combined effect on service innovation. The framework is proposed for researchers to conduct further empirical studies in order to test its validity in practical work environment.

Objective - This study aims to examine and explain the relationship between a company's internal factors such as profitability, solvency and audit committee, and external factors including complexity and size of public accounting firms, with audit delay. Methodology/Technique - The importance of financial information is, in part, due to its utility for assessment of company performance. Hence, financial information should be produced and reported as quickly as possible each year. Findings - This study finds that manufacturing companies with high debt levels and low profitability experience longer audit delay. Moreover, the results in this study show that debt level is the most influential and significant factor with a positive relationship to audit delay. Novelty - This study shows that profitability, the number of members on an audit committees and public accounting firm (KAP) size all have an insignificant negative relationship with audit delay. Purpose The relevance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in contributing to the economy and social development is increasingly felt in the current business environment. Focusing on sustainable development, SMEs have also implemented many acting strategies of large-scale enterprises such as lean and green practices. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the linkage between lean manufacturing practices (LMPs) in SMEs and their sustainability performances. Further, this study explores the relationship between the triple bottom line sustainability performances. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a survey conducted and data collected from 252 manufacturing SMEs in India. The hypothesized relationships are then analyzed with structural equation modeling. Findings The outcome of the analysis shows that LMPs are positively associated with various sustainability performances categorized as economic, environmental, and social performances. Further, this study shows that environmental sustainability is correlated with economic and social sustainability performances. Research limitations/implications The study conducted was limited to a particular state in India. Moreover, the study uses the data from a cross-sectional survey from single respondents. Practical implications The findings of the study become an added advantage for the managers to convince their various stakeholders for implementing LMPs in SMEs. Originality/value The research findings provide theoretical and practical insights to derive the importance of LMPs in maximizing sustainability performances. It gives an enhanced perspective of the importance of LMPs on the sustainability performance of SMEs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of lean manufacturing on firm value. In particular, it analyses the effects of R&D investment on the relationship between lean manufacturing and firm value. Design/methodology/approach In this empirical analysis of the relationship between lean manufacturing and firm value, the authors use a propensity score matching (PSM) with a difference-in-difference (DID) estimator to control selection bias and reduce endogenous problems. They also use the triple difference estimator to explore the role of R&D investment. Findings The results suggest that the achievement of positive and significant effects of lean manufacturing implementation on firm value for a long time and R&D can accelerate this progress. Research limitations/implications This study highlights the role of R&D investment in accelerating the achievement of positive effects of lean manufacturing on firm value. However, the results may not be entirely generalizable because the empirical data are based solely on Chinese manufacturing firms. Practical implications Managers need to perform long-term planning while implementing lean manufacturing and should not over-expect a significant short-term improvement in performance. The authors also recommend that enterprises should pay attention to R&D while implementing lean manufacturing. Originality/value This paper may be the first study to empirically examine the relationship between lean manufacturing and firm value in China by combining a PSM model with the DID estimator to reduce endogenous problems.

Currently the scientific community distinguishes several types of production and product based on intellectual capital. Most used are intelligent production and product, knowledge-intensive, innovative, high-tech and smart manufacturing and product. These terms were introduced a long time ago but their precise definitions still do not exist and the boundaries between them are rather arbitrary. This paper is devoted to the analysis and systematization of definitions of the concepts of science-intensive, innovative, high-tech and intellectual production and product represented in scientific issues in order to distinguish their key characteristics, compare and designate their relationship. It was found each of the concepts has at least 2 approaches to the definition and as a rule one of which reflects its consistency. The relationship between each of the types of production and the product has been determined. The system of relationships has a hierarchical structure: high-tech manufacturing and product are the subset of innovative, those are the subset of knowledge-intensive, and those are the subset of intelligent. Smart manufacturing appears to be a special characteristic. The results of this work can be used as a basis for the development of more accurate definitions of the concepts under consideration in the scientific community, their unification in scientific researches and legislative acts.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of internal integration, external integration (EI), and supply chain risk management (SCRM) on manufacturing flexibility, and the moderating effect of SCRM on the relationships between internal and EI, respectively, and manufacturing flexibility. Design/methodology/approach Using hierarchical regression, data are analyzed from a sample of 343 manufacturing plants in Asia collected in 2013-2014 as part of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS VI). Findings Internal integration and SCRM have a direct effect on manufacturing flexibility. SCRM moderates the relationship between EI and flexibility. Research limitations/implications Further research is needed to generalize beyond the flexibility performance of discrete manufacturing firms in Asia. Practical implications To benefit from EI and increase their flexibility performance, manufacturing firms need to implement different mechanisms of SCRM to prevent and deal with supply chain risks including those associated with supply chain integration. Originality/value This research contributes to the body of knowledge on the relationships between internal integration, EI, SCRM, and manufacturing flexibility.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between product customization and servitization strategies, specifically the relationship between product customization strategy intensity and degree of servitization (offering of basic and/or advanced services) and the moderating role of product customization strategy alignment on that relationship. Design/methodology/approach The authors develop and test hypotheses through partial least squares path modeling to analyze data from the Sixth International Manufacturing Strategy Survey, involving 931 manufacturers in 22 countries. Findings The results indicate that customization strategy intensity is positively associated with the offering of basic and advanced services; these relationships are not moderated by customization strategy alignment. Practical implications Manufacturers pursuing product customization strategies may be especially well positioned to servitize, even those with misalignment in strategic choices. Paradoxically, while manufacturers of standard products might look at servitization as an attractive strategy to differentiate their value proposition, they appear to be less servitized than manufacturers pursuing product customization. Originality/value This is one of the first studies to examine how manufacturing strategy choices (intensity and alignment) influence the adoption of servitization strategies. The study introduces manufacturing strategy as a contingency factor that influences the adoption of servitization, answering calls for the study of servitization contingencies.

Purpose- This study aims to determine the relationship between free cash flow and investment efficiency of quoted manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Design- An accounting-based model developed by Richardson (2006) was employed to measure investment efficiency and free cash flow. The population of the study consist of all the listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Similarly, the purposive sampling technique was employed to arrive at forty-eight companies for 2008-2018. Findings- The results of the study confirm the agency theory of free cash flow. Hence, it established that there is a positive and robust relationship between free cash flow and overinvestment. Practical Implications- the findings of this study has practical implications to various group of users of financial information such as investors, policymakers and other stakeholders in the listed manufacturing sector in Nigeria. The study recommends that policymakers reduce the cost of debt, and likewise, managers should emphasize the facilitation of equity capital. Originality- To the best of the researcher's knowledge, this is the first study to examine the relationship between free cash flow and investment efficiency in Nigeria.

Overall, we find no relationship between growing manufacturing employment in general and infant mortality. However, when the growth in manufacturing is concentrated in more polluting industries (as measured by the construction of a harm-weighted index of predicted emissions from manufacturing), there were economically and statistically significant increases in infant mortality. Finally, we consider a variety of potential causal channels that may change with industrialization (such as housing quality and access to health care) and whose change may help to explain the observed relationships. Although most of the various factors are correlated with infant mortality and the industrialization measures are correlated with changes in several factors, conditioning on these measures does not change our basic results.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between entrepreneurial team and growth of small and medium manufacturing enterprises in Kenya.
Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population was 422 manufacturing SMEs in Nairobi County who are members of Kenya Association of Manufacturers. Nairobi County was purposively selected. Both stratified and simple random sampling was used to select a representative sample. Both primary and secondary data collection techniques were employed. A Pilot study was conducted on 20 manufacturing SMEs in Kiambu County to establish and improve on the validity and reliability of research instruments. Data collected was coded and stored in tabular form using Microsoft Excel. Data was analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. Quantitative data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 25 software through descriptive statistics (measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion). Data was presented through Tables.
Results: The study found out that the there was a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurial team and growth of small and medium enterprises. The conclusion from the results is that that 23.8% of growth of small and medium enterprises in Kenya is explained by entrepreneurial team.
Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommended that the government should formulate supportive policies for entry, survival and growth of manufacturing SMEs such as favorable terms and conditions for accessing finance, entrepreneurial education and training, research and development and markets.

Due to the existence of limited rationality and information asymmetry, trust between enterprises in the cloud manufacturing environment is characterized by significant complexity. In this paper, to promote the formation of a better trust relationship between enterprises and to ensure the efficient service and stable operation of the manufacturing process to a greater extent, we take into account the subjective cognition of the game parties from the perspective of service combination, introduce the prospect theory, construct an evolutionary game model of “service demander-service provider-platform supervisor,” analyze the evolutionary stabilization strategy, and explore the influence of different factors on the interenterprise trust relationship in the cloud manufacturing environment through numerical simulation. The results show that enhancing the synergy between multiple service providers has a significant impact on improving trust between cloud manufacturing enterprises. The rewards and punishments of the cloud manufacturing platform are conducive to improving interenterprise trust. There exists a critical value dividing opportunistic behavior into explicit and implicit behaviors. When it is less than the critical value, opportunistic behavior is implicit and the service demander trusts the service provider and the transaction continues; when it is greater than the critical value, opportunistic behavior is explicit and the service demander no longer trusts until the service provider is fully trustworthy. The inhibitory effect of good transaction history on opportunistic behavior is evident. Finally, the reasons and effects of the above factors and the subjective perceptions of the game parties in cloud manufacturing are discussed, as well as their concrete manifestations in the CASICloud (China Aerospace Science&Industry Cloud) and relevant suggestions are put forward.

Purpose Lean manufacturing (LM) constitutes a consolidated alternative that has been successfully used to increase company effectiveness and performance. However, different studies have shown that many companies that attempt to integrate LM into their manufacturing operations fail in their efforts. Recent studies have shown that soft practices are a key factor for a successful LM implementation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze an in-depth review of the different human-related lean practices (HRLP) referenced in the recent literature and to identify which of them are more relevant to a successful LM implementation. Design/methodology/approach The findings presented in this paper are based on the results of a study about the situation of LM in Spain carried out with lean production managers and frontline supervisors of 202 Spanish companies with a high percent (74 percent) of international firms with factories in different countries. The implemented methodology uses factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Findings The results shows statistical evidence of the relationship between management’s HRLP (fostering a lean culture, providing support to lean), employees’ HRLP (employee involvement and employee empowerment) and operational performance (OP) (waste reduction and flexibility). Practical implications The results have academic and practical relevance for clarifying lean phenomena, helping managers to define a sequence in which a company should implement HRLP to successfully implement LM and increase its OP. Originality/value This study fills a research gap by exploring the existing causal relationships between a greater number of variables, both dependent and independent in relation to human factors in LM implementations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence about the relationship between working capital financing (WCF) and firm profitability in six key manufacturing sectors of Indian Economy. It also aims to capture the change in the financing of working capital requirement over different scenarios of price-cost margin and financial flexibility. Design/methodology/approach The study is undertaken on a sample of 1,211 firms from 6 key manufacturing sectors of Indian economy from 2000 to 2016. The non-linear relationship between WCF and profitability is studied using two-step generalized model of moments (GMM) estimator. Findings The study finds a convex relationship between WCF and profitability among firms in chemical, construction, and consumer goods sectors. Firms in these sectors can finance larger portion of their working capital requirements through short-term debt without negatively impacting profitability. However, a concave pattern of relationship for firms in machinery, metal, and textile industries implies increasing debt financing of working capital requirement would increase profitability for the firms who have financed lower portion of their working capital by short-term bank borrowing. But when a higher proportion of working capital requirements are already financed by short-term debt, a further increase in debt financing may impact profitability negatively. Moreover, the study finds that firms with high financial flexibility and high price-cost margin (except textile) can increase profitability by financing larger portion of working capital requirement through short-term debts and the continuation with risky WCF could increase profitability. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature on working capital in a number of ways. First, no previous study has been undertaken to explore the non-linear relationship between WCF and corporate profitability over a large sample of firms from six key manufacturing sectors of Indian economy. Second, the study uses a quadratic function to explore the non-linear relationship between WCF and profitability. Third, the study explores the relationship between WCF and profitability with respect to the price-cost margin and financial flexibility of firms under different manufacturing sectors of Indian economy. Finally, the study uses advanced two-step GMM, the panel data techniques to handle unobservable heterogeneity and issues of endogeneity within the data sample.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the extent of green initiatives within manufacturing SMEs, as well as the mediating effect of the owners/managers intention toward green and moderating effect of green technology adoption in building environmental sustainability in the context of the Malaysian manufacturing SMEs.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through a survey questionnaire responded by 260 Malaysian manufacturing SMEs. The relationships proposed in the developed conceptual framework were represented through three hypotheses: there is a significant relationship between green initiatives and environmental sustainability (H1); intention toward green mediates the relationship between green initiatives and environmental sustainability (H2); and green technology adoption moderates the relationship between intention toward green and environmental sustainability (H3). SEM-AMOS nested model comparisons and mediating and moderating analyses were used to test the hypotheses.FindingsThis is the first research toward the green initiatives framework for the manufacturing SMEs. Till date, no framework is available which could guide researchers and practitioners of this high impact on the environment industry. The findings revealed that energy management, water conservation and waste management are related to environmental sustainability. On mediation analysis, it confirms that owners/managers intention toward green fully mediates the association of green initiatives and environmental sustainability. Finally, the moderation analysis revealed that green technology adoption does not have an influence on manufacturing SMEs environmental sustainability.Practical implicationsThis study is expected to help both researchers and practitioners in terms of manufacturing and other industries who are serious toward environmental sustainability implementation and are looking for an appropriate mechanism. It offers a generalized environmental sustainability implementation linking SMEs owners/managers, green practices, green technology policy, process management and supply chain management.Originality/valueThis study is among the very first environmental sustainability implementation research works conducted in the Malaysian manufacturing sector, particularly, in relation to the green initiatives and “four pillars” of green technology policy that manufacturing SMEs in this country need to adopt to make their environmental sustainability a solid competitive vehicle for their development. The results have broader implications for all manufacturing SMEs, particularly in developing economies where the growth of manufacturing and the development of integrated environmental sustainability are key stages in economic development.

The difficulty of teachers in fostering student interest in online learning causes low student learning outcomes, especially in science learning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, learning in Indonesia was carried out online at every level of education, including at the elementary school level. So it takes a high student interest in learning to achieve maximum learning outcomes. This study aims to analyze the relationship between learning interest on science online learning outcomes. This type of research is ex post facto research. The number of populations and samples in this study was 60 students. Data collection techniques using a questionnaire. The data analysis used is simple regression and multiple regression using SPSS. The results showed that interest in learning and learning outcomes influenced each other. There was a significant positive correlation between interest in learning and student learning outcomes who scored Fcount > Ftable (0.302 > 0.254). So, there is a significant relationship between learning interest and online science learning outcomes for third grade students of Primary School Cluster III separately and simultaneously. The higher the student's interest in learning, the student's science learning outcomes will increase. The implication of this research is to improve teacher performance and the active role of parents to foster student interest in learning which will lead to improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract This paper provides evidence about the relationship between economic structure and political violence in Latin American countries in the period 1990–2019. The empirical analysis suggests that manufacturing activities are negatively associated with the number of terroristic attacks. On the contrary it exists a positive relationship between mining activities and political violence. A further analysis suggests that the relative size of manufacturing with respect to mining sector is negatively associated to terroristic attacks occurrence. Such relationship becomes stronger when it is associated to high levels of trade openness.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current level of supply chain practices (SCPs) in Indian manufacturing organizations. Design/methodology/approach – The 15 SCPs are identified based on the literature support and opinion of industry experts and academia, and data were collected from 292 organizations. Data were analyzed using the statistical package for the social science software to see the current level/penetration of SCPs in Indian manufacturing organizations. Findings – The practices, namely, organizational culture, customer relationship, information and communication technology, benchmarking and performance measurement, lean manufacturing, agile manufacturing, supplier relationship are highly penetrated practices in Indian manufacturing organizations. The practices, namely, outsourcing, information sharing, just in time manufacturing, green supply chain management are moderately penetrated practices, while the practices, namely, reverse logistics, postponement, vendor managed inventory, radio frequency are least penetrated practices in Indian manufacturing organizations. Research limitations/implications – Further study can be extended to see the of penetration practices applicable to service and agriculture sectors. Practical implications – The result of this paper will enable the organizations to identify and direct their focus on the areas that requires improvement. Also, the organizations will become more aware of the SCPs that will help in boosting up their performance and competitiveness and indirectly boost the growth and contribute to India’s economic development. Originality/value – This is the first kind of study which checked the level of selected SCPs in Indian manufacturing organizations.
