Motivational relations between the first stems and the secondary stems are determined in linguistics as the separate type of paradigmatic relations on the lexical level and are characteristic only for the secondary stems. There are three types of motivation on the lingual level: semiotic, formal (word-forming) and semantic. L’objectif de l’étude est de vérifier l’apport du modèle transthéorique de changement chez une clientèle anxieuse ou dépressive en explorant les relations entre la motivation au changement, l’alliance thérapeutique et l’efficacité de la thérapie. L’échantillon est composé de 131 participants se présentant volontairement à une clinique de psychologie pour traiter des symptômes anxieux ou dépressifs. Des questionnaires évaluant la motivation au changement, l’alliance thérapeutique et la sévérité des symptômes sont complétés en début et fin de suivi. La majorité de l’échantillon se situe aux stades de contemplation en début de traitement. Les clients plus engagés dans l’action et moins déprimés évaluent l’alliance plus favorablement. Seule l’alliance du client en fin de suivi est associée à l’amélioration des symptômes dépressifs. L’importance pour le clinicien de porter une attention à l’ambivalence du client au début du traitement est soulignée. La validation du questionnaire de motivation au changement et la standardisation de normes cliniques d’interprétation sont recommandées.

The aim of the study is to investigate how four teachers work to motivate pupils to read. The study also investigates the similarities and differences between grades 1 and 3 in the teachers’ efforts to motivate pupils to read. Reading is a central part of school work, not only in the subject of Swedish but also in other subjects. The result of previous PISA studies shows that Swedish pupils have deteriorated in reading comprehension. We therefore want to find out how teachers work to motivate pupils to read. The method in the study proceeds from semi-structured interviews. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The result shows that different methods are used to motivate pupils to read. Reading aloud is a method that all teachers use in order to motivate the pupils. It was also found that the informants work with external motivation. This means, for example, rewarding pupils when they read or telling them what the purpose of reading is. More similarities than differences were found in the way teachers work with motivation in grades 1 and 3.

LVM- vården har som uppgift att bryta ett destruktivt missbruk, främja motivationen till fortsatt frivillig vård samt långsiktigt främja frihet från missbruk och utvecklandet av en sundare livsstil.      Syftet med studien var att undersöka motiverande faktorer vid Rällsögården utifrån ett klient- och personalperspektiv. Likheter och skillnader mellan klienters och personals uppfattningar om motiverande faktorer analyserades för att undersöka vilken eventuell inverkan dessa kan ha på Rällsögårdens mål att motivera klienten till fortsatt frivillig vård. Tidigare forskning inom ämnet behandlar relationsskapande inom en tvångsvårdskontext, LVM-vårdens syfte och verkställande samt motivationsfaktorer inom tvångsvården.      För att besvara syfte och frågeställningar genomfördes studien med en kvalitativ ansats. Datainsamlingen skedde genom semistrukturerade intervjuer. Respondenterna bestod av tre personal och tre klienter från Rällsögården.      Resultatet av studien visar att faktorer som rör relation, organisation samt yttre och inre faktorer i klientens liv kan ses som motiverande faktorer av så väl personal som klienter på Rällsögården. Resultatet visar också på betydande skillnader i personalens och klienternas uppfattningar av dessa motiverande faktorer exempelvis vad som anses motiverande för klienterna till fortsatt behandling.
The purpose of custodial care is to break a destructive abuse, to improve the motivation of an addiction treatment by choice and to prevent misusage by long-term and to improve the development of a healthier lifestyle.      The purpose of this study was to examine motivational factors at Rällsögården from the perspective of clients and staff. The similarities and differences between the staff and clients opinions about motivational factors were analyzed to examine what eventual impact they could have of Rällsögårdens goal to motivate the clients to an addiction treatment by choice.      Prior research within the subject describe the creation of relations in a context of custodial care, the purpose and performance of the law of custodial care and the motivational factors within the custodial care.      To fulfill the purpose and to respond to the question formulation the study were examined with a qualitative research method. Semi constructed interviews were used to collect the data. The respondents were three people from the staff of Rällsögården and three clients of Rällsögården.      The result of the study shows that relations, organization and internal and external factors are to be seen as motivational factors by the staff as well as the clients of Rällsögården. The result also shows significant differences in both clients and the staff’s opinion of these motivational factors for example what are to be considered motivational for the clients an addiction treatment by choice.

One persistent concern about the increasingly widespread use of private security companies (PSCs) is that, unlike the state-organized military, PSCs are inherently unreliable and disloyal because they are primarily motivated by profit and only subject to limited controls. Yet if these concerns were valid, one should expect misconduct to be PSCs' default behavioural option. Evidence from UK PSCs operating in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003-2009, however, suggests that misconduct was relatively rare, given how widely PSCs were used in both theatres of operation. Indeed, PSCs are frequently lauded for their professionalism and loyalty - particularly by their customers, who arguably have a close view of their behaviour. The core problem of this thesis is, therefore, the question why misconduct is actually not more prevalent in the UK private security industry (PSI). It argues that the dominant conceptualization of PSC behaviour overemphasises the importance of financial interests in their decision-making. Using Granovetter's concept of embeddedness, this thesis suggests that the social context of PSCs, through institutions, networks and power relationships, shapes their economic actions. In a three-level analysis, it shows how (1) the decisionmaking processes in individual PSCs, (2) competition in the market for PSC services and (3) the (contractual) relationship between PSCs and their clients reduce the likelihood of misconduct. Rather than being exclusively interested in maximising their corporate profits, PSCs are therefore motivated by a complex amalgam of financial and non-financial interests. This motivation, combined with informal regulatory influence from their labour, market and client relations, causes PSC behaviour to be more restricted than previously acknowledged. Adopting a qualitative approach and drawing on over fifty semi-structured interviews with UK PSC representatives and employees, their clients, policy-makers and experts as well as on corporate reports, biographies, academic and media research, this thesis traces the key factors that shaped the behaviour of UK PSCs in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2003-2009. By providing a more nuanced understanding of UK PSC behaviour, this study offers a new approach to PSC regulation. Instead of strict, formal regulation, including intrusive monitoring and strong sanctions, this study demonstrates the advantages of less antagonistic, responsive forms of regulation, which rely on fostering military professionalism in the PSI, on shaping public and private sector demand power in the market for PSC services and on using the relationship dimension of contracting to increase regulatory responsiveness.

This thesis explored different perceptions of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in an intercultural context. The main objective of this study was to investigate similarities and differences concerning extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in the workplace between the German and the South African culture by examining individuals with working experience and tertiary education. It provides background information about motivation and a historical overview of previous and current motivational theories as well as cultural influences and differences. In addition, regarding the two cultures the researcher aimed to investigate similarities and differences between other demographics such as gender, age and income. The literature review provides information about extrinsic and intrinsic motivation retrieved from previous research and puts it into an intercultural context. The researcher conducted a quantitative, exploratory study. The data was gathered using an existing research instrument, which was distributed online. The sample comprised 374 respondents. This sample was conducted by a combination of quota and snowball sampling. The obtained data is evaluated and presented in text and table form. The results revealed preferences for intrinsic motivators for the whole sample and higher motivation for the South African part of the sample. Demographic characteristics played a minor role.

The purpose of this research was to investigate relations between students' academic motivation, cognition, and achievement. In particular, substantial issues are investigated involving the interaction of students' academic motivation and cognition, and specifies how selected motivational and cognitive variables may influence student academic achievement. In order to do this, this study develops a causal model of student achievement which, using goal theory as a framework, incorporates both motivational and cognitive variables to account for students' academic achivement. In total, the results suggest that students' academic achievement may be both conceptualised, and operationalised, as the product of interrelations between key facilitating, motivational, and cognitive variables. Despite some limitations, the study suggests several positive directions for future research. These include, in particular, further investigation of the social goals identified, how these goals relate to students' academic cognition, and how selected social goals and strategies together influence students' academic achievement. There is also further scope to investigate the role of particular facilitating variables in 'driving' students' academic motivation and cognition. Thus, the present research provides an empirical basis from which future, complementary, research may be undertaken

On a analysé la manifestation de sémiotiques signifiantes dans une sémiotique biplane, la langue portugaise brésilienne, avec le but d’y vérifier la possibilité de manifestations de semi-symboles. Les analyses ont été distribuées dans trois catégories linguistiques, la phonético-phonologique, la rhétorique et la prosodique ; et dans trois catégories visuelles, l’eidétique, la topologique et la chromatique. En fait, l’enquête a été surtout concentrée sur les caractéristiques articulatoires, acoustiques, prosodiques, sur la couleur, la forme et le jeu de direction des signifiants sonores dans des chaînes discoursives dans lesquelles le sens véhiculé par la forme d'expression supplantait les valeurs purement stylistiques. La première partie de la thèse présente les fondements théoriques et la méthode de recherche et dans la deuxième se sont déroulée les analyses et les discussions sur les semi-symboles manifestés en textes humoristiques et poétiques issus du contexte culturel brésilien moderne et postmoderne. Pour vérifier l'hypothèse selon laquelle les semi-symboles se manifestent en tant que des phonèmes dans des sémiotiques biplanes, il ont été mené des analyses sur onze poèmes appartenant à neuf auteurs adeptes de styles littéraires différents, sur deux sketches tirés de l’Os Trapalhões, sur deux extraits de la bande dessinée de la Mônica et sur deux autres du Helmer Fudd, sur un extrait du feuilleton O Bem Amado et sur un monologue comique du comédien Shaolin. Pour bien mener les analyses, on a présenté un modèle opératoire proposé pour la description logico-structurelle des manifestations semi-symboliques dans les ensembles signifiants étudiés. On a élucidé les corrélations entreprises par le biais des notions de motivation, conventionnalité et arbitrarité entre des catégories d’expression et du contenu dans une dimension verbale parfois syncrétique. La recherche a ratifié des distinctions entre langage formelle et langage molaire, elle a mis en évidence la distinction entre les rapport terme à terme et catégorie à catégorie dans les formes et substances des plans sémiotiques délimitant les frontières entre signe linguistique, symbole, semi-symbole et symbolisme phonétique en plus de discuter le rôle de la répétition et du contexte pour la mise en place du sens semi-symbolique. L’étude a révélé en outre qu’avant de parler sur semi-symboles, le rapport de motivation entre le signifiant et le signifié avait déjà été touché, grosso modo, en termes de symbolisme phonétique par la Phonostylistique et même avant cela avait déjà été touché, entre autres, par Platon (dans un certain degré linguistique), dans le Cratyle ; par Humboldt en termes de motivation picturale, symbolique et analogique ; par Guiraud en termes de motivation interne et externe au système linguistique ; par Saussure en termes de motivation intralinguistique, c’est-à-dire, en tant que moyen de formation de mots et renouvellement du lexique concernant de plus près les classes des onomatopées, des conjonctions et le processus de composition morphologique. Il est avéré que tant la motivation comme la conventionnalisation coproduisent et coopèrent à la fois au processus de semiosis. Enfin, il a été constaté que la manifestation semi-symbolique est possible dans des sémiotiques biplanes à partir de formes d’expressions de la même nature comme de nature syncrétique aussi bien
The manifestation of signifying semiotics was analyzed in a biplane semiotic, the Brazilian Portuguese language, with the aim of verifying the possibility of manifestations of semi-symbols. The analyses were distributed in three linguistic categories, the phonetic-phonological, prosodic, rhetoric; and in three visual categories, eidetic, topological and chromatic. Indeed, the investigation was mostly focused on the articulatory, acoustic, prosodic characteristics on the color, shape and on the direction play of the sound signifiers in the discursive chains in which the meaning conveyed by the form of expression surppasses the values purely stylistic. The first part of the thesis presented the theoretical foundations and the method of research and in the second part was performed the analysis and the discussions about the semi-symbols manifested in humorous and poetic texts outcome from modern and postmodern Brazilian cultural context. To test the hypothesis that the semi-symbols occur as phonemes in semiotic biplanes, it was analyzed eleven poems from nine authors who are followers of different literary styles, two sketches drawn from Os Trapalhões, two extracts from the cartoon Monica’s Gang and two others from Helmer Fudd, an extract from the soap opera O Bem Amado and other from a Shaolin’s stand-up comedy show. To perform the analysis, it was proposed an operating model for the logical-structural discription of the semi-symbolic manifestations in the studied signifying ensembles. It was elucidated the correlations engages through the notions of motivation, conventionality and arbitrariness between categories of the expression and the categories of content of a verbal dimension sometimes syncretic. The research ratified distinctions between formal language and molar language, it highlighted the distinction between the relation term to term and category to category between forms and substances of the semiotic plans delineating the boundaries between linguistic sign, symbol, semi-symbol and phonetic symbolism in addiction to discussing the role of the repetition and context for the setting of semi-symbolic meaning. The study also reveals that before talking about semi-symbols, the relation of motivation between signifier and signified had already described grosso modo in termes of phonetic symbolisms by Phonostylistics and even before that it had also touched by, amongst others, Plato, in the Cratylus (in a certain language degree); by Humboldt in terms of pictorial, symbolic and analogical motivation; by Guiraud in terms of internal and external motivation into linguistic system; by Saussure in terms of intralinguistic motivation, i.e., as a meand for word formation and renewal of the lexicon touching closer to classes of the onomatopoeias and of the conjoctions and the process of morphological composition. It was evident that both the motivation and the conventionalization co-occur and cooperate to the process of semiosis. Finally, it was found that the semi-symbolic manifestation is possible in biplane semiotics as from forms of the expression of same nature as syncretic nature as well
Tratou-se da análise da manifestação de semióticas significantes, em uma semiótica biplana, a língua portuguesa, com o objetivo de aí verificar a possibilidade de manifestações de semissímbolos. Distribuíram-se as análises em seis categorias linguísticas, a fonético-fonológica, a prosódica e a retórica; e em três categorias visuais, a eidética, a topológica e a cromática. Na verdade, a investigação foi concentrada principalmente sobre as características articulatórias, acústicas, prosódicas, sobre a cor, a forma e o jogo de direção dos significantes sonoros em cadeias discursivas nas quais osentido veiculado pela forma da expressão suplanta os valores meramente estilísticos. Na primeira parte da tese, apresentam-se os fundamentos teóricos e o método de investigação e na segunda realizaram-se as análises e as discussões sobre os semissímbolos manifestados em textos humorísticos e poéticos retirados do contexto cultural brasileiro moderno e pós-moderno. Para verificar da hipótese de que os semissímbolos se manifestam como fonemas em semióticas biplanas, foram analisados onze poemas de nove autores seguidores de estilos literários diferentes, dois esquetes retirados de Os Trapalhões, dois excertos dos quadrinhos da Turma da Mônica e dois outros do Elmer Fudd (Hortelino Troca-Letras), um fragmento da novela O Bem Amado e outro de um espetáculo solo do comediante Shaolin. Para realizar as análises, apresentou-se um modelo operatório para a descrição lógico-estrutural das manifestações semisímbólicas nos conjuntos significantes estudados. Elucidaram-se as correlações empreendidas por meio das noções de motivação, convencionalidade e arbitrariedade entre categorias de expressão e categorias de conteúdos de uma dimensão verbal por vezes sincrética. A investigação ratificou distinções entre linguagem formal e linguagem molar, tornou patente a distinção entre relação termo a termo e categoria a categoria entre formas e substâncias dos planos semióticos delimitando as fronteiras entre signo linguístico, símbolo, semissímbolo e simbolismo fonético além de discutir o papel da repetição e do contexto para a configuração do sentido semissimbólico. Revelou, ainda, que antes de se falar em semissímbolos a relação de motivação entre o significante e o significado já havia sido descrita, grosso modo, em termos, de simbolismos fonéticos do lado da Fonoestilística e mesmo antes disso já havia sido tocada de certa maneira, entre outros, por Platão em o Crátilo (em certo grau linguístico); por Humboldt, em termos de motivação pictórica, simbólica e analógica; por Guirraud, em termos de motivação interna e externa ao sistema linguístico; por Saussure em termos de motivação intralinguística, ou seja, como expediente de formação de palavras e renovação do léxico tocando mais de perto as classes das onomatopeias, das conjunções e os processos de composição morfológicos. Ficouevidente que tanto a motivação como a convencionalização coocorrem e concorrem para o processo de semiose. Por fim, se constatou que a manifestação semissimbólica é possível em semióticas biplanas a partir de formas da expressão de mesma natureza como de natureza sincrética também

Three studies examined the relation of intimacy motivation as a social motive to interpersonal functioning. In Study 1, a self-report measure of intimacy motivation (san Int) was first constructed and then compared to the existing thematic measure (n Int; McAdams, 1992). The two motive measures were uncorrelated and associated with different quantitative and qualitative dimensions of social interactions. Nonetheless, both were independent predictors of the valence of interpersonal interaction. In Study 2, n Int and san Int were again found to be uncorrelated and to independently predict the valence of social interactions. In addition, the results indicated that although n Int and san Int were somewhat differently related to the sources and form of social support, both contributed independently as well as interactively to the perception of social support. In Study 3, the two forms of intimacy motivation were considered along with interpersonal skill and values in the prediction of rapport in a specific close relationship. The results showed that n Int and san Int independently predicted dyadic rapport as well as interacted with levels of interpersonal skill and values. Interestingly, there was also a negative interaction between n Int and san Int. Taken together, this series of studies provides strong support for distinguishing between motives assessed via self-report and thematic analysis as tapping two qualitatively different kinds of motivation. In addition these studies clearly indicate that the best prediction of interpersonal functioning is accomplished through the assessment of both kinds of motivation along with measures of interpersonal skills and values.

Ce travail de thèse prend part à un projet de recherche visant à éprouver la pertinence d’une interprétation normative du concept de motivation intrinsèque. Cette hypothèse proposée par François (2004) s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’approche sociocognitive des normes sociales développée par Beauvois (1984). Cette thèse vise d’une part à confirmer la valorisation d’ordre normative de la motivation intrinsèque à un niveau intergroupe et interindividuel, d’autre part à analyser le type de valeur sociale (utilité ou désirabilité) associé à la motivation intrinsèque, afin d’en comprendre sa fonctionnalité. Dans cette perspective, sept études ont été réalisées à des niveaux de mesures explicites (études 1, 2, 3, 6 et 7) et implicites (études 4 et 5). Les premières ont été conduites à partir de questionnaires, administrés dans le cadre des paradigmes des juges et d’identification de Jellison et Green (1981), les secondes à partir d’un paradigme de décision lexicale avec amorçage. La mise en perspective de ces résultats concourt à la vérification de la valorisation normative de la motivation intrinsèque, mais dont le fondement résiderait alternativement dans la désirabilité sociale ou dans l’utilité sociale, selon le contexte. Ainsi, au-delà de sa participation à la mise en évidence de la normativité de la motivation intrinsèque, cette thèse contribue, à l’émergence d’une nouvelle définition de la valeur associée aux normes sociales de jugements (Dubois, 2005, 2006), dans laquelle le contexte devient une notion centrale. Elle pose enfin la question de la part d’explication normative dans l’expression motivationnelle, en contextes organisationnels réels
This work of thesis takes part in a research project, which aim at testing the relevance of a normative interpretation of the intrinsic motivation’s concept. This following, suggested by François (2004) is based upon the sociocognitive approach of the social norms developed by Beauvois (1984). This thesis aims, on the one hand, at demonstrating the normative valorization of intrinsic motivation on an intergroup and interindividual’s levels, and on the other hand, at analyzing the type of value lied to intrinsic motivation (social utility or social desirability). Hence, seven studies were carried out with explicit measurements (studies 1,2,3,6 and 7) and and with implicit measurement (studies 4 and 5). The first were based upon questionnaries, using paradigms of the judges and identification (Jellison and Green, 1981), the seconds is based upon a lexical decision’s paradigm with starting. These results contribute firstly to the reinforce the normative interpretation of intrinsic motivation but secondly, suggest that this valorization appeals to alternatively social desirability or social utility, according to the context. Thus, beyond its participation in the description of the normativity of the intrinsic motivation, this thesis presents, a new definition of the value associated with the judgments norms (Dubois, 2005,2006), in which the context becomes a central concept. It finally questions on the part of normative explanation in the motivational expression, in real organisational contexts

This investigation explored the phenomenon of motivation in the inter-relational space between therapists and clients. Its aim was to give voice to a small group of existential therapists who were trained and practise counselling psychology in the UK. Literature review focused mainly on the theoretical conceptualisation of motivation and its therapeutic implications across different modalities. Using a Relational-Phenomenological Approach, the investigation looked at the dialogical and co-creative nature of motivation in therapy. Themes emerged were indicative of motivation existing as multiple differently motivated selves in both therapists and clients. Differently motivated selves are characterised by their inner- and inter- relationality and give rise to kaleidoscopic relational dynamics in the inter-subjective space. Relational features such as openness, ability to stand on the edge with clients and total acceptance of the is-ness of the moment seem to co-create fertile ground for motivational transformations. I also experienced the co-creational, dialogical and motivationally transformational nature of differently motivated selves throughout the research process, which points at the multi-directional nature of motivation. Awareness of motivation is multifaceted and differently motivated selves and is interactional and dialogical, whereby the therapist cannot remain neutral can be useful in Counselling psychology.

The present study compares the relation of early adolescents’ academic self-concept, effort regulation and task value with their peer of three distinct relationships, which named as mutual friendships, frequent interactive pairs and social groups. Data was collected from a secondary school in Hong Kong with 135 form 1 students and 176 form 3 students. Moderating effect of adolescents’ own motivation on help-seeking and peer-learning in each type of peer relationship and developmental difference were also explored. Different correlation found in academic self-concept and effort regulation across forms proves the existence of three distinct types of peer relationship. Result shows that social group’s academic characteristic is most predictable for early adolescent’s own academic motivation. Result also suggests that motivation on help-seeking and peer-learning moderate the relation of adolescents’ academic effort regulation and task value mainly in dyadic relationships, such as mutual friendships and frequent interactive pairs.

L'objet de la présente thèse était d'examiner les relations entre les perceptions de soi, la motivation d'accomplissement et la pratique d'activité physique des personnes âgées. Une première étude menée dans une perspective dynamique (Ninot et al., 2004) a montré que l'estime de soi et les perceptions du soi physique chez les sujets âgés, présentaient un niveau plus bas, une instabilité plus importante, comparées aux perceptions de soi de jeunes adultes, mais aussi une non-stationnarité des séries temporelles. Le caractère labile de ces perceptions de soi étant démontré, une seconde étude a mis en évidence qu'une prise en charge en APA de sujets institutionnalisés très âgés entraînait des changements positifs de leur estime globale de soi et de leurs perceptions de valeur physique, d'apparence physique et de compétence sportive. Compte tenu de la mise en jeu de l'estime de soi dans les buts d'accomplissement (e.g., Wolfe & Crocker, 2002), les deux études suivantes ont consisté à valider un Questionnaire Français des Buts d'Accomplissement pour le Sport et l'Exercice Physique (QFBASEP ; Riou et al., 2012) prenant en compte les évolutions conceptuelles récentes du modèle en quatre buts d'Elliot et Murayama (2008). L'instrument ainsi créé nous a permis, dans une cinquième étude, de démontrer qu'une prise en charge en APA, pratiquée dans un climat motivationnel de maitrise entraînait une réduction de l'implication des personnes âgées institutionnalisées dans les buts de maîtrise-évitement habituellement considérés comme des réponses mal-adaptatives à la menace que constitue la confrontation au déclin de ses propres capacités (Elliot, 2005). Enfin, une sixième étude a permis de montrer qu'une combinaison de propriétés relatives aux buts d'accomplissement identifiées par Gernigon et collaborateurs (Gernigon, 2013 ; Gernigon et al., 2012) prédisait la participation à des activités physiques des personnes âgées. En conclusion, l'étude des facteurs psycho-sociaux de la pratique d'activités physiques a permis de déterminer les rôles respectifs de l'estime de soi et des perceptions du soi physique d'une part, et de la motivation d'accomplissement d'autre part, dans l'engagement des personnes âgées dans des comportements actifs physiquement. Nous avons démontré que des pratiques d'APA encadrées ouvrent la perspective d'un processus de réengagement dans des comportements actifs et peuvent constituer le point de départ de l'inversion du processus de déconditionnement (Préfaut & Ninot, 2009)
The aim of this doctoral research was to examine the relationships between self-perceptions, achievement motivation and physical activity in aging. A first study, that was conducted according to a dynamical perspective (Ninot et al., 2004), showed that elderly person's self-esteem and physical self perceptions displayed lower levels, higher instability than young adults', but a non-stationary time series. The lability of self perceptions being so evidenced, a second study showed that an intervention based on adapted physical activities conducted in institutes for elderly persons entailed among these people positive changes in their global self-esteem as well as in their perceptions of physical value, physical appearance, and sport competency. Given that self-esteem is contingent on the extent to which one achieves specific goals (e.g., Wolfe & Crocker, 2002), the next two studies consisted of validating a French Achievement Goal Questionnaire for Sport and Exercise (FAGQSE; Riou et al., 2012) that takes into account the Elliot and Murayama's (2008) recent conceptual evolvements of the four-goal framework. The creation of this instrument then enabled, in a fifth study, the demonstration that carrying out an intervention based on a mastery motivational climate entails a reduction of the institutionalized elderly persons' involvement in mastery-avoidance goals, a kind of goal that is considered a maladaptive response to the threat that people perceive when facing up to their own capabilities decline (Elliot, 2005). Finally, a sixth study showed that a combination of specific properties of achievement goals that were identified by Gernigon and his collaborators (Gernigon, 2013; Gernigon et al., 2012) predicted elderly persons' involvement in physical activities. To conclude, this examination of the social-psychological factors of involvement in physical activities led to the identification of the respective roles of self-esteem, physical self perceptions, and achievement motivation in elderly persons' involvement in physically active behaviors. We showed that the supervised practice of adapted physical activities may activate a process of re-engagement in active behaviors and may be the starting point of a reversal in deconditioning (Préfaut & Ninot, 2009)

There is extensive research on depression and interpersonal problems, but research has not addressed these concepts in relation to mutuality and human motivation. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to consider the associations between intimacy motivation and mutuality of closest relationships and how, when combined, the two connect to depressive experiences and the occurrence of interpersonal problems. Of the 7 original hypotheses suggested, 2 were supported while 5 were not. Perhaps the most interesting finding, and certainly the one with the most practical application, came from the two supported hypotheses. The analyses show that interpersonal problem subtypes are associated with specific depressive subtypes by operationalizing the demand/withdraw pattern of conflict. The exploratory findings also suggest a possible mediation of gender and depression by mutuality.

La relation individuelle de travail a pour particularité de reposer traditionnellement sur une inégalité des parties. Ce sentiment d'inégalité des forces est perçue dans la relation individuelle de travail toute entière. Ainsi, la supériorité de l'employeur est ressentie au travers de la subordination juridique qui lie inéluctablement le salarié à son employeur. De même, cette supériorité est perceptible lors de l'élaboration de la relation individuelle de travail qui repose théoriquement sur la sujétion de la partie faible. Aussi, se fondant sur les évolutions proposées par le droit commun, nous souhaitons démontrer que le développement de l'information contribue à réduire la domination subie par le salarié. Ainsi, la première partie de ce travail tente d'apporter la démonstration selon laquelle le salarié, partie faible lors de la création de la relation de travail, peut se libérer de celle-ci au moyen de l'information. Cette dernière offre, tantôt par son effet obligatoire, tantôt par son effet libérateur une solidité certaine à l'acte d'engagement du salarié. Une fois la relation de travail établie, le salarié estlogiquement soumis aux pouvoirs reconnus à l'employeur. La deuxième partie de ce travail se propose donc d'entrevoir la manière avec laquelle l'information permet de contourner la force d'attraction de ces pouvoirs qui, s'ils ne sont pas mis en oeuvre de façon transparente, font perdre à l'employeur sa légitimité à agir
The individual employment relationship has the particularity to rely on traditionally unequal parties. This feeling of inequality is perceived strengths in the individual employment relationship as a whole. Thus, the superiority of the employer is felt through the legal subordination that inevitably binds the employee to the employer. Similarly, this superiority is evident in the development of the individual employment relationship based theoretically on the subjection of the weaker party. Also, based on the changes proposed by the law, we want to demonstrate that the development of information helps to reduce the domination suffered by the employee. Thus, the first part of this work attempts to provide proof that the employee weakest part in the creation of the employment relationship, can get rid of it using the information. This latest offering, sometimes by its binding effect, sometimes by liberating some solidity to the act of engagement of the employee. Once the working relationship, the employee is logically subject to the powers granted to the employer. The second part of this work proposes a glimpse of the way in which the information is used to bypass the pull of those powers which, if they are not implemented in a transparent manner, are lost to the employer legitimacy to act

Cette recherche a été menée auprès d'étudiants de Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles Scientifiques. Un de ses objectifs est d'analyser l'influence des variables motivationnelles sur la performance académique. L’auto-efficacité académique, l’orientation des buts et la motivation autodéterminée sont souvent citées pour leur rôle majeur dans la réussite universitaire. Ces variables sont issues de cadres théoriques distincts et nous souhaitons étudier comment elles s'influencent mutuellement. Des outils psychométriques, dont une échelle d’auto-efficacité académique, ont été créés et validés. Des analyses en pistes causales ont été effectuées afin de proposer un modèle traduisant les influences qui existent entre variables motivationnelles et performances académiques.Nos résultats montrent que :- l’auto-efficacité est la seule variable motivationnelle à avoir une influence directe sur les performances académiques ;- le but d’approche de la maîtrise est sous influence de l’auto-efficacité et une orientation vers ce type de but influence positivement la motivation intrinsèque et négativement l’amotivation ;- le but d’approche de la performance a une influence positive sur les différentes formes de motivation extrinsèque et, parmi ces dernières, la motivation extrinsèque à régulation identifiée influence positivement l’auto-efficacité tandis que la motivation extrinsèque à régulation externe l’influence négativement ;- l’amotivation influence négativement l’auto-efficacité académique ;- l’impact de l’amotivation sur les performances académiques est totalement médiatisée par l’auto-efficacité.Des prolongements de cette étude et certaines applications sont proposés
This research has been carried out among French science students enrolled in CPGE (Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles). One of its objectives is to study how motivational variables influence academic achievement. Academic self-efficacy, achievement goals or self-determined motivation are reported to play an important part in academic achievement. By relating self-efficacy, goal orientations and motivation, as conceptualized in self-determination theory, to both preceding and subsequent academic achievement, it is possible to further investigate the structural relation between these variables. Therefore, we aim at analysing the mutual influences which exist among them.Psychometric tools, among which an academic self-efficacy scale, were created and validated. Path analysis were performed in order to produce a multivariate model including motivational variables, previous academic performance and subsequent academic achievement. Our results showed that:- self-efficacy is the only motivational variable that directly influences academic achievement; - mastery approach goal, which is influenced by self-efficacy, enhances intrinsic motivation but is negatively related to amotivation;- performance approach goal enhances extrinsic motivation and identified regulated extrinsic motivation is positively related to self-efficacy while externally regulated extrinsic motivation is negatively related to it;- amotivation is negatively related to self-efficacy;- Self-efficacy beliefs are mediators between amotivation and subsequent academic achievement.Future research could build on these findings. Suggestions of applications are provided

The fact that many talented and capable students opt out of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) pipeline and that women remain underrepresented in STEM fields are international phenomena and a matter of considerable concern amongst policymakers. Expectancy-value theory (EVT) (Eccles, 2009) is one of the major frameworks for studying achievement motivation, and has been widely used to tackle this issue. Previous EVT research has demonstrated that students’ expectancy and value beliefs for specific academic subjects are important precursors of achievement-related behaviours (Eccles, 2009; Wigfield, Tonks, & Klauda, 2009). Despite the fact that research on task values has increased, it still lags far behind research on expectancy-related beliefs (e.g., academic self-concept [ASC]) (Wigfield et al., 2009), which is known to represent an important determinant of diverse educational outcomes (Marsh, 2007). This thesis integrated EVT and ASC and extended prior work by closely investigating: (a) the unique contributions of ASC and multiple value components in predicting diverse achievement-related outcomes, particularly during post-high school transition; (b) the multiplicative relation between ASC and value beliefs (i.e., ASC-by-value interaction) that was a core assumption of the original EVT but seems to have disappeared from modern EVT (Nagengast et al., 2011); (c) how well the theoretical models posited in ASC theory (e.g., multidimensional and domain specific selfconcept model, reciprocal effect model [REM], internal/external frame-of-reference [I/E] model with its extension to dimensional comparison theory [DCT]) generalise to different value beliefs; and (d) how the social and cultural factors (e.g., gendered socialisation, socioeconomic status [SES]) shape individual and gender differences in educational and career pathways. This thesis explored new perspectives on EVT and ASC theory through five empirical studies relying on advanced methodologies and using data from large and representative national/international samples. Studies 1 and 4 respectively drew on Grade 8 students from Hong Kong (N = 13,621) and four OECD countries (N = 18,047), based on the International Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. Studies 2 and 3 respectively drew on longitudinal data from representative samples of U.S. (N = 2,213) and Australian (N = 10,370) students during post-secondary school transition. Finally, study 5 was based on a sample of German 9th-grade students (N = 1,978).

The aim of this thesis is to explore employment relations in young, growth-oriented, technology-driven (high-tech) start-ups. It takes a closer look at the exchange relationship between founders and their first employees in this specific context. At its core, the research is interested in employees motivation to work for a growth-oriented start-up and their understanding of the employment deal. The study uses the psychological contract as an analytical framework to gain deeper insights into individuals perceptions of this deal. The research is embedded within an interpretivist paradigm and includes eight case studies involving growth-oriented high-tech start-ups in Berlin and London. For each case, in-depth interviews with three full-time employees as well as the founder(s) were conducted. The findings of this thesis demonstrate that the employment deal in growth-oriented start-ups is a short-term, faith-driven contract, which differs substantially from the current understanding of the psychological contract. In contrast to the long-term or open-ended contract often offered by larger, more established organisations, this deal has a defined expiration date . Moreover, the findings challenge the current understandings on remuneration, relationship building and power dynamics within growth-oriented start-ups and add to the literature by offering a re-conceptualisation of the psychological contract. This thesis helps to inform prospective employees about the advantages and challenges of joining a start-up and encourages entrepreneurs to further tailor their management and compensation strategies.

Mina frågeställningar var om de upplever en ökad arbetsmotivation av relationerna samt vilka relationer det finns på avdelningen.  Fem assisterande handledare, en deltagare och två ordinarie handledare intervjuades till studien.   Studien utgår från en emotionssociologisk ansats och jag har därför valt att analysera olika emotioner som förknippas med relationer samt att arbeta på en arbetsmarknadsavdelning. Teorierna som jag har tillämpat är socialt stöd, krav/kontroll/stöd-modellen, skam och stolthet, Goffmans (2004) främre och bakre regioner, humor, målstyrning, arbetsdelning, arbetsmotivation, yttre, inre och sociala incitament. Samtliga av de åtta respondenter upplevde att relationerna har en betydelse för arbetsmotivationen, relationerna kan hjälpa individerna att komma iväg till arbetsplatsen. Respondenterna upplevde svårigheter att definiera sina emotioner till följd av relationer men min analys visade att det är goda relationer som etableras på avdelningen.   Resultatet av studien visar att det finns en skillnad i arbetsmotivation mellan deltagare samt assisterande handledare. Min avsikt var inte att undersöka detta men det blev så tydligt i mitt material och det är något man kan undersöka i senare forskning. Samtliga var även överens om att avdelningen har förändrat individernas beteende och tankesätt när det gäller ett arbete.

A partir du concept de motivation et de quelques unes des théories avancées sur ce thème, nous avons d'abord évoqué les différentes tentatives de "motivation des personnes" mises en place dans l'entreprise de 1986 ; nous avons ensuite mentionné les principaux axes autour desquels est organisée la fonction "relations humaines" dans l'environnement entrepreneurial, puis avons enfin délimité, au travers de cinq psychothérapies humanistes, notre action personnelle face à ces deux centres d'intérêt. L'idée principale de cette thèse que nous nous sommes éfforcé de mettre en évidence tout au long de notre recherche est celle-ci : l'homme, dans le domaine industriel, ne peut pas être motivé de l'extérieur par des influences dirigistes ou technocratiques ; il doit souhaiter et ressentir ce besoin de motivation de façon profonde et pour cela apprendre à se connaître, à épanouir sa personnalité dans un contexte où le poids du collectif est de plus en plus important et il ne représente souvent qu'un maillon de la chaîne. Si, grâce à cette démarche volontariste, il peut ensuite mieux communiquer avec les autres, tout en restant lui-même dans ses choix fondamentaux, et donc responsable, notre objectif, à savoir "modifier l'environnement relationnel dans l'entreprise de demain", sera atteint. Pour tendre vers ce but, nous avons mis en place une méthodologie relationnelle basée sur la confiance, en nous impliquant personnellement au travers de notre rôle de manager dans des interventions thérapeutiques individuelles ou en groupe, dont certaines sont données à titre d'exemple dans cet ouvrage. Nous avons, enfin, dans une dernière partie, tenté de théoriser nos observations à partir des résultats, souvent appréciables, obtenus sur le terrain, afin d'aider ceux qui, comme nous, désirent participer au changement des mantalités et favoriser le développement humaniste de l'entreprise
From the motivation concept and some theories expressed on this subject, we have first of all evoked the different attemps to motivate people until now in the industrial environment ; then we have mentionned the main axis round of which is organised the personnal function and, at last, we have shown, by using five different types of humanistic psychotherapy, our own action in front of these two major items. The principal idea of this thesis we have given prominence to all along our research is this one : a man, in industrial area, cannot be motivated from outside by interventionist or technocratic influences, he must on the contrary whish and feel deeply this need of motivation and to do that, be able to know better himself to open out his personality in a context where the weight of the group becomes more and more heavy and where as a man he is just one link in the chain. If thanks to this determined step, he can then better communicate with other people, keeping nevertheless in mind the feasibility of fundamental choices and therefore be fully responsible, our objective which is to modify the kinds of relationship in the industrial environment of tomorrow will be achieved. To get at this aim, we have put in place a method of relationship based on confidence, by involving ourselves through our manager's job in therapeutic interventions (individual or group) which for some of them given for example in this work. We have finally, in a last part, tempted to theorize our comments and results obtained on the field to help those who, as we did, want to participate in this modification of mentalities and to promote the humanistic development of industrial surroundings

Arbetsmarknaden står inför ett generations- och paradigmskifte, när den äldre generationen går i pension och de yngre förväntas ta över. Samtidigt ökar den psykiska ohälsan och sjukskrivningen främst bland de yngre och stress rapporteras vara den stora bakomliggande orsaken; känslan av otillräcklighet och svårighet att få balans i livspusslet. Undersökningar poängterar att förebyggande arbete och tidiga insatser gynnar såväl medarbetares hälsa och arbetsplatsens ekonomi. Studiens syfte är att undersöka om samtalsstöd som ett nytt subventionerat friskvårdsalternativ uppfattas positivt, i synnerhet av Generation Y (födda 1982-1999). Resultatet av enkätundersökningen, genomförd på ett kommunkontor med 76 deltagare visade att 60% skulle boka samtal idag om det erbjöds som ett friskvårdsalternativ. Många uppgav att de hade en förstående person att samtala med. Stress, ökade krav i arbetslivet och arbetsbelastning angavs som största nyttan att samtala kring, främst av kvinnor och Gen Y. Resultatet bekräftar att det är önskvärt och behov av samtalsstöd föreligger.

Des échecs de coordination et des conflits d’intérêts sont les problèmes persistantes dans les organisations. Ces problèmes ne sont pas seulement de nature économique ou rationnelle. Les préférences sociales jouent également sur la manière dont ces problèmes sont compris et abordés. On peut améliorer le fonctionnement de l'organisation par la compréhension de l'influence des préférences sociales sur la résolution de problèmes, la collaboration, et la résolution des conflits. Je trouve que les deux préférences sociales la lutte pour le statut et le maintien des relations s’entravent mutuellement: la lutte pour le statut diminue le gain des relations collaboratives, et une relation décourage l’esprit de compétition lié à la lutte pour le statut. Les préférences sociales affectent également la formation et la rétention des routines culturelles. Les groupes avec un fort sens de l’identité utilisent leurs routines de résolution des problèmes de manière plus régulière et sont plus susceptibles de conserver ces routines lors de la prise de décisions individuelles. Le statut entrave le développement et le maintien de routines en ce sens que les groupes sont relativement moins fidèles quant à leur utilisation et les individus montrent une moindre acceptation des routines du groupe. La relation entre les deux membres d'un groupe de trois permet aux deux premiers de s’engager dans la résolution cohérente des problèmes, cependant le groupe dans son ensemble utilise ses routines de manière moins régulière, et la rétention de routines est altérée également. Enfin, je trouve que la demande de leadership augmente quand les problèmes de coordination et de conflits d’intérêt deviennent plus difficiles, et que le leadership permet au groupe d’atteindre de meilleurs résultats par rapport aux actions individuelles et à la punition mutuelle quand les problèmes de coordination deviennent plus difficiles à résoudre
Coordination failures and interest conflicts are persistent problems in organizations. These problems are not merely economic or rational. Social preferences also influence how these problems are understood and addressed. Understanding the influence of social preferences on problem solving, collaboration, and conflict resolution can improve organizational functioning. I find that the social preferences of status striving and relationship maintenance hinder one another: Status striving reduces the collaboration benefit from relationships, and relationship dampens the competitive impact of status. Social preferences also affect the formation and retention of cultural routines. Groups with a strong sense of identity use their problem-solving routines more consistently and are more likely to retain the routines during individual decision making. Status interferes with the formation and retention of routines in that groups are less consistent in using them and individuals show lower retention of the group routines. Relationship between two of the three members helps the two to solve the problems more consistently, but the group as a whole applies its routines less consistently, and the retention of routines also suffers. Finally I find that the demand for leadership goes up the more difficult the coordination and conflict resolution problems become, and that leadership enables the group to achieve higher value outcomes as compared to individual actions and mutual punishment when the coordination problems become harder to solve

Self-generated questions are a central mechanism for learning, yet students' questions are often infrequent during classroom instruction. As a result, little is known about the nature of student questioning during typical instructional contexts such as listening to a lecture, including the extent and nature of student-generated questions, how students evaluate their questions, and the relations among questions, motivations, and achievement. This study examined the questions undergraduate students (N = 103) generated during 8 lectures in an introductory chemistry course. Students recorded and appraised their question in daily question logs and reported lecture-specific self-efficacy beliefs. Self-efficacy, personal interest, goal orientations, and other motivational self-beliefs were measured before and after the unit. Primary analyses included testing path models, multiple regressions, and latent class analyses. Overall, results indicated that several characteristics of student questioning during lectures were significantly related to various motivations and achievement. Higher end-of-class self-efficacy was associated with fewer procedural questions and more questions that reflected smaller knowledge deficits. Lower exam scores were associated with questions reflecting broader knowledge deficits and students' appraisals that their questions had less value for others than for themselves. Individual goal orientations collectively and positively predicted question appraisals. The questions students generated and their relations with motivational variables and achievement are discussed in light of the learning task and academic context.

Determining the factors that contribute to mental toughness development in athletes has become a focus for researchers as coaches, athletes, and others extol its influence on performance success. In this study we examined a model of mental toughness development based on achievement goal theory, assessing the relations between motivational climates, goal orientations, and mental toughness. Five hundred ninety-nine varsity athletes, representing 13 different sports from six different high schools in a southwestern United States school district, participated in the study. Athletes completed self-report measures assessing parent, peer, and coach motivational climates, goal orientations, and their mental toughness. Initially, I examined the measurement model and found it fit the data well both in the exploratory (SRMR = .06; CFI = .94) and confirmatory (SRMR = .06; CFI = .95) samples. Second, the structural model was examined and found to fit the data well in both the exploratory (SRMR = .08; CFI = .93) and confirmatory samples (SRMR = .07, CFI = .95). Parent task-involving climate, (β = .55; p < .05) and coach task-involving climate (β = .32; p < .05), but not peer task-involving climate (β = .05), were associated with task goal orientation (R2 = .57). Ego goal orientation (R2 = .32) was explained by peer ego-involving climate (β = .15; p < .05), parent ego-involving climate (β = .39; p < .05), and coach ego-involving climate (β = .16; p < .05). Finally, only task goal orientation (β = .75; p < .05) was related to the athletes’ mental toughness (R2 = .56); the ego goal orientation pathway was not significant (β = .04). These results speak to the potential positive influence of parents and coaches on athletes’ mental toughness through their endorsement of task-involving messages and pursuits leading to the development of a task goal orientation.

Partant du constat que la catégorisation des individus en un « Nous » et un « Eux » peut suffire à provoquer un traitement inégal des membres de ces groupes, certaines stratégies ont proposé d’atténuer la frontière ainsi créée en recatégorisant l’ensemble des membres des deux groupes au sein d’un ensemble supraordonné. Cependant, cette stratégie peut s’avérer inefficace, voire contreproductive, précisément quand elle menace les fonctions remplies par les identités initiales. Parmi ces fonctions, la possibilité de se définir comme différents des autres (ie. la distinctivité) est particulièrement concernée. La présente recherche a pour objet de tester, à travers 5 études : 1) si la recatégorisation provoque effectivement une menace sur la distinctivité 2) ses conséquences sur les biais intergroupes 3) la pertinence d’une stratégie de préservation de la distinctivité par l’ajout de catégories sociales.Les résultats ont montré, sur des groupes minimaux, mais aussi nationaux, que de la recatégorisation émanait une menace qui s’exprime tant sur des mesures implicites qu’explicites du biais intergroupe même si des processus propositionnels semblent modérer l’impact de la menace sur ces derniers. De plus, proposer des catégorisations supplémentaires a permis de réduire cette menace et le biais intergroupe associé, sans faire émerger d’effet délétère mesurable.Ces résultats soulignent l’apport de croiser les approches fonctionnelles et sociocognitives des catégorisations sociales et incitent à reconsidérer ces dernières non pas nécessairement comme des problèmes, mais également comme ressources dans les stratégies visant à l’harmonisation sociale
On the premise that categorising individuals into “Us” and “Them” can be enough to elicit unequal treatment between the members of those groups, some strategies suggest recommend to blur group boundaries by recategorising all the members of both groups into one superordinate group. However, this strategy may prove inefficient or even counterproductive, precisely when it threatens initial identities functions. Among those functions, being able to define oneself as different from the others (ie. distinctiveness) is especially affected. This research aims at testing, in 5 studies: 1) if indeed recatégorisation produces a threat to distinctiveness 2) its consequences on intergroup bias 3) the relevance of a distinctiveness preservation strategy by social categories addition.Results, on both minimal and national groups, showed that a threat stemmed from recatégorisation which had impact on both implicit and explicit measures of intergroup bias, although propositional processes seem to moderate threat’s influence on the latter. Moreover, offering additional categorization allowed for a threat and related intergroup bias reduction, with no measurable harmful effect arising.These results underline the contribution of putting together functional and sociocognitive approaches of social categorisations and encourage rethinking the latter not necessarily as issues but also as resources in social harmonization strategies

It is generally assumed that monetary incentivization is the most effective means of motivating organizationally-beneficial behaviors. Individuals, under this line of thought, pursue their own objective self-interest above all else. However, evidence is being uncovered that indicates that human motivation may be a much more complicated facet of the human psyche. The purpose of this study is to examine the deeper underpinnings that drive people work that might lie beyond financial rewards. In order to do this, the Shakedown Café, a student-run restaurant on Pitzer College’s campus, will be examined. This specific organization is of particular interest because it does not have the ability to reward employees in the manner that most businesses are able to employ. In looking at the Shakedown, the author's direct experiences while working in the restaurant, observations, a variety or intra-organizational correspondences, and modern organizational behavior theories will be utilized. The findings of this research indicate that the human drives to learn, bond with others, and defend oneself and one's surroundings are all just as important aspects of motivation as is the drive to acquire money. Within the organization of interest, these drives manifest themselves through organizational purpose, group learning, and shared leadership. From this example of the Shakedown Café, it is suggested that proliferation of financial rewards in today's organizations may well be an outdated model of motivating which could be prohibiting organizations and the people within them from reaching their full potentials.

In recent years, social media has experienced tremendous growth in the number of users. Facebook alone has more than 1.3 billion active users and Twitter has attracted over 600 million active users. Social media has significantly changed the way humans communicate. Many people use social media to keep in touch with family and friends and receive up-to-date information about what happens around the world. Politicians are using social media to support their campaigns. Use of social media is not restricted to individuals and politicians. Businesses are now using social media to promote their products and services. Many companies maintain Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep in touch with their customers. Consumers also use social media to receive information about products/services. Online product reviews are now an important source of information for consumers. This dissertation aims to address one fundamental research question: how do individual differences among users lead to different levels of performance on social media? More specifically, this dissertation investigates the motivations of use and the predictors of performance in the context of social media. We utilize sentiment mining to predict performance in different types of social media including information diffusion in Twitter and helpfulness and readership of online consumer reviews. The results show how different motivations lead to different levels of participation in social media and level of participation consequently influences performance. We also find that sentiment of the messages posted on social media significantly influence their performance.

Dans un contexte de croissance des tâches du client lors des expériences de service, cette thèse étudie qualitativement et quantitativement la relation entre l'aide au client, la motivation à participer et l'efficacité de la participation du client. La thèse adopte le point du prestataire de service. La partie qualitative se fonde sur deux études complémentaires, la première reposant sur les avis clients laissés en sortie de magasin, la deuxième sur l'analyse de parcours clients. La partie quantitative se déroule en deux temps. D'abord la relation entre l'aide au client (présence, nature, vecteur) et l'efficacité de la participation est testée lors d'une quasi-expérimentation en magasin sur 557 clients observés durant l'intégralité de leur parcours. Ensuite, lors d'une deuxième étude par scénario, les deux routes motivationnelles, émotionnelle et rationnelle, sont considérées afin de comprendre comment l'aide au client accroît l'efficacité de la participation.Les apports de cette recherche sont méthodologiques et théoriques. L'efficacité de la participation du client est mesurée en observant le comportement réel du client en magasin et non par une phase déclarative, développant ainsi une méthodologie spécifique pour étudier le concept de participation. Les résultats montrent que la présence d'une aide accroît l'efficacité de la participation du client et que les émotions constituent une route motivationnelle véhiculant l'influence de l'aide au client sur l'efficacité de la participation. Ces apports permettent d'envisager la mise en place d'actions managériales permettant d'accroître l'efficacité et l'autonomie du client lors de l'expérience de service
Today, companies require a higher customer participation in service experiences. This research aims at studying the relationship between customer support, motivation to participate and customer productivity from the company point of view, through qualitative and quantitative studies. The qualitative research is founded on two complementary studies: the first one is based on customer comments in store, the second one on the customer journey analysis. The quantitative research is subdivided in two parts. First, the relationship between customer support (availability, nature and medium) and customer productivity is analyzed through the observation of 557 customer journeys. Then, the influence of motivation paths (emotions and rational motivation) are studied in a scenario based study in order to consider how customer support increases customer productivity.Research contributions are methodological and theoretical. This research brings a new methodology to study participation: the customer productivity is measured through the observation of customer real behavior and not through a declarative process. On a theoretical perspective, the customer support availability increases customer productivity and the emotions are a way to motivate customers to participate. These contributions lead companies to implement new processes to increase customer productivity and self-service activities during the service experience

According to statistics, it is common that Upper Secondary school students in vocational programs drop out. The aim of this study was to find out why these students decide to complete their education after having considered a dropout. How many students considered dropping out, who are those students and what reasons did they have? What thoughts and experiences did they have of the schools attempt to prevent them from dropping out? To collect data to this study a survey was used, followed by qualitative interviews. The data was later analyzed based on Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence. The results showed that half of the students had at some point considered dropping out of school. The three main reasons for dropping out were: low motivation, mental health problems and that the education lacked quality. The top three reasons for wanting to pursue their education were: wanting an education, parents´ expectations and social interaction with friends. All students agreed that they have good relations with someone working at the school whom is willing to listen to them. One conclusion is that a healthy and safe school environment and good relations between school staff and students is a key to prevent school dropouts.

The purpose of this study was to examine how four teachers with different teaching experiences treat and think about insubordination in school. The study emphasizes on questions like: When and why does disorder occur? How do the teachers manage disorderly conduct in the classroom? and Could there be a conflict between the teacher’s expectations and management, and the needs and motivation of the pupil?    It was evident through interviews with these four teachers that their statements could be divided into similar themes which subsequently could be put into the motivational structure of Abraham H. Maslow.        The conclusion of the study was that teachers may possibly have a better chance of managing disorder in their classroom if they are aware of the connection between disorderly conduct and a person’s needs and motivation.

L'analyse de contenu a permis de repérer deux trajectoires distinctes : celle des enseignantes ayant approfondi leurs conceptions éducatives conduisant à un épanouissement professionnel global ; celle des enseignants ayant subi des régressions significatives dans leurs conceptions éducatives et des rétrécissements de leurs perspectives professionnelles. Les enseignantes du premier groupe ont produit des déclarations ayant rapport à des approches de létude en profondeur ; les enseignantes du deuxième groupe ont vraisemblablement développé une approche de l'étude en surface.

Den tekniska utvecklingen går med stora steg framåt för varje år som går, information sprids snabbare än någonsin och vi blir vana med att kunna vara ständigt uppdaterade. Även barn som växer upp idag blir vana med detta informationsflöde och att få ständig belöning via sociala medier. Studiens syfte var att beskriva hur grundskolelärare motiverar sina elever. Studien är en kvalitativ studie som genomfördes med intervjuer samt observationer, och analyserades med tematisk analys. Deltagarna var lärare och det var sex kvinnor och en man som deltog i studien. Det framkom att deltagarna motiverar sina elever genom att (1) bygga relationer, (2) väcka något inre och yttre (3) skapa variation och (4) anpassa miljön för att skapa den uppmärksamhet som behövs. Studien kan vara användbar för institutioner som bedriver denna typ av verksamhet.

The South African construction industry is faced with challenges which impede on successful project delivery. While incentives have been recognised as motivational tools for individual employees to achieve certain goals, the South African construction industry has not fully exploited the various avenues to initiate motivational approaches aligned with project objectives to enhance successful delivery of construction projects. This study is therefore aimed at exploring which monetary and non-monetary incentives would compel construction and consultant team members to improve successful project delivery. The study adopted a deductive approach whereby hypotheses were formulated based on motivation theories and applied them in construction project team situations. In this regard, the extensive literature related to motivation theories such as the hierarchy of needs, incentives, organisational commitment, and teamwork environment were reviewed. A web survey was adopted for the empirical data gathering by means of a questionnaire e-mailed to nationwide selected construction and consultant firms. Data analysis was done by means of ranking, paired sample test, T-Test, ANOVA test, Mann- Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis test of association, and the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The reliability test was done using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of reliability. In total, 164 respondents participated in the study. It was revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between mean rankings of motivational factors, and organisational commitment was perceived as the most important motivational factor that compelled construction and consultant team members to achieve project success. There was no statistically significant difference between various demographics (gender, qualification, and experience) pertaining to self-development needs, organisational commitment, and teamwork environment motivational factors, except age groups, which displayed a statistically significant difference in self-development needs and teamwork environment. There was a statistically significant difference between mean rankings of monetary and non-monetary incentives, and non-monetary incentives were preferred to monetary incentives in achieving higher performance. There was no statistically significant difference between various demographics (gender, age, qualification, and experience in the construction industry) of construction and consultant team members pertaining to monetary and non-monetary incentives. There was no statistically significant difference between mean rankings of primary project objectives aligned with monetary incentives, where time was perceived as the most important. There was no statistically significant difference between various demographics (gender, qualification, and experience in the construction industry) of construction and consultant team members pertaining to project objectives aligned with incentives, except age groups which displayed a statistically significant difference in project objectives aligned with monetary and non-monetary incentives. Two models have been developed based on the PCA results of project objectives aligned with monetary and non-monetary incentives. Each model consisted of four parts, namely project objectives, demographic information, short-run project-based interventions, and long-run interventions. The PCA results showed monetary incentives could be a useful project-based intervention mechanism in the short-run to achieve secondary project objectives, such as the provision of work opportunities to SMMEs. In the long-run, this confirms the usefulness of the CIDB initiative consisting of the provision of work opportunities to SMMEs through the National Contractor Development Programme (NCDP) guidelines. The PCA results showed non-monetary incentives could be a useful project-based intervention mechanism in the short-run to achieve primary project objectives, such as quality. In the long-run, a continuous improvement mechanism by various construction industry stakeholders is deemed necessary to maintain project delivery standards.
