The origins of democracy can be traced in a general way to the earliest civilizations, beginning with the early urban societies of the Middle East, and can be seen in cities and communities across the Mediterranean world and Asia. In classical Athens, male citizens enjoyed full participation in the political life of the city and a flourishing democratic culture, as explored in detail in this volume. In other times and places democratic features were absent from the formal structures of regimes, but could still be found in the participatory structures of local social institutions. This volume surveys democracy broadly as a cultural phenomenon operating in different ways across a very wide range of ancient societies throughout Antiquity. It examines the experiences of those living in democratic communities and considers how ancient practices of democracy differ from our own. Each chapter takes a different theme as its focus: sovereignty; liberty and the rule of law; the “common good”; economic and social democracy; religion and the principles of political obligation; citizenship and gender; ethnicity, race, and nationalism; democratic crises, revolutions, and civil resistance; international relations; and beyond the polis. These ten different approaches to democracy in Antiquity add up to an extensive, synoptic coverage of the subject.

Empires of Antiquities is a history of the rediscovery of the imperial civilizations of the ancient Near East in a modern imperial order that evolved between the outbreak of the First World War and the decolonization of the British Empire in the 1950s. It explores the ways in which near eastern antiquity was redefined and experienced, becoming the subject of imperial regulation, modes of enquiry, and international and national politics. A series of globally publicized spectacular archaeological discoveries in Iraq, Egypt, and Palestine, which the book follows, made antiquity material visible and accessible as never before. The book demonstrates that the new definition and uses of antiquity and their relations to modernity were inseparable from the emergence of the post-war international imperial order, transnational collaboration and crises, the aspirations of national groups, and collisions between them and the British mandatories. It uniquely combines a history of the internationalization of archaeology and the rise of a new “regime of antiquities” under the oversight of the League of Nations and its institutions, a history of British attitudes to, and passion for, near eastern antiquity and on-the-ground colonial policies and mechanisms, as well as nationalist claims on the past. It points to the centrality of the new mandate system, particularly mandates classified A in Mesopotamia/Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan, formerly governed by the Ottoman Empire, and of Egypt, in the new archaeological regime. Drawing on an unusually wide range of materials collected in archives in six countries, as well as on material and visual evidence, the book weaves together imperial, international, and national histories, and the history of archaeological discovery which it connects to imperial modernity.

Women have a complicated relationship with violence. While they are affected by conflict disproportionately, they are also perpetrators and enablers of violence. These female militants are not rare nor are they aberrations. Countless women have contributed to wars fought from antiquity to the present. Yet, their impact on the security realm is often overlooked or underestimated. This oversight is consequential as it is impossible to truly understand international relations without considering women’s diverse contributions to global politics. This chapter examines female participation in the execution of political violence across time and space and discusses how gender diversity in conflicts across the world affects U.S. national security.

The Oxford Handbook of the Book of Revelation is the premier reference work for the study of Revelation. Part 1 gives attention to the literary features of the book, including its narrative and rhetorical aspects, imagery, hymns, use of the Old Testament and distinctive Greek style. Part 2 considers the social context in which Revelation was composed and first read, including its relation to Roman rule, Jewish communities, Greco-Roman religions, and various groups of Jesus followers. Part 3 explores major topics in theology and ethics, including God, Jesus, and the Spirit; perspectives on creation, evil, and violence; and the portrayal of Babylon, new Jerusalem, and the people of God. Part 4 deals with the book’s history of reception and influence, including the transmission of the Greek text and inclusion in the New Testament canon, patterns of interpretation in antiquity, middle ages, and modern period, and Revelation’s impact on liturgy and music. Part 5 turns to emerging trends in interpretation, including the use of feminist, African American, and post-colonial perspectives. With contributions from leading international scholars, the volume offers authoritative essays on the current state of research that will help to shape the direction of future studies in the field.
