Повний текст джерелаThe French stay of Benjamin Franklin between 1776 and 1785 as an envoy of the United States leaves a strong image, that of the remarkable popularity of the diplomat, who goes beyond the circle of ministerial offices to invest the public space. This study intends to highlight Franklin's relationships with what some contemporaries, such as Necker, began to call "public opinion", with the aim of painting a portrait of the French through the mirror of the public image with multiple facets of a famous foreigner, without determinism and in a period that I will simply name, to exclude as much as possible any teleology, "the end of the 18th century". This research is based on the important collection of “Papers of Benjamin Franklin” and thus on the entirety of the French correspondence of the American, comprising nearly two thousand letter writers and more than five thousand five hundred letters. Other sources complete this corpus: Franklin's writings translated into French and circulating in the kingdom, but also many other printed materials, the French-speaking European press of the moment, the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of La Courneuve, and finally the abundant iconography relating to the character. This vast corpus offers us a good understanding of the French people of this period through the study of numerous themes, such as sciences, techniques, politics, salons, Freemasonry, the court, commerce or even the army. This research also reveals the vision of America and the United States held by the French people and thus offers an analysis of the real motivations of the subjects of Louis XVI who are ready to trade with the Americans and grant them credits, of applicants for emigration to the New World and of military volunteers to join the theater of war

Повний текст джерелаThis survey is based on a standard process of regional and departmental momographies, consisting in a study of political history built upon a close examination of the economic structure and social life in these regions. This thesis can be divided into three parts: the first one deals the demography and economy of the Cantal, the second one with some particular aspects of its social life, and the third one the most important one with the political behavior of its inhabitants to the nation's evolution. Owing to its fundamentally rural economy at the end of the second republic, the Cantal remained, in many respects, identical to what it used to be at the end of the 18th century. Its traditional farming had not changed yet, that rural world, with its numerous and scattered population, where large towns could hardly be found, was continuing its evolution towards an economy that specialized in cattle breeding. The second part of this thesis is centered round social relation: notability, poverty, marginality and integration of the Cantal into the French nation

Повний текст джерелаHungarian communists adopted the Soviet vision that France was the weak link in the Western camp, this led them to reserve an important place to the FCP and, from 1953 on, to other French political parties in their foreign policy. Considering also the leading role played in the opening process of the Warsaw Pact towards social democracy by the liberal nomenclature, which had taken over the country after 1956, relations between the Hungarian communist regime and the French Left deserve consideration. The thesis presents this relationship, which was the blind spot of the historian production, in the changing contexts of Hungarian and French politics and of international relations. The dissertation focuses on cultural relations in the light of cultural voluntarism of the Hungarian regime and of the influence of the Communist Party on intellectuals. The second aim is epistemological: the thesis opens the question about the possibility to analyze the relationship between a party state and political parties, which are of lower rank, in the international context of the Cold War. These relationships were important for power as a way to legitimize its political orientation and to increase its room for manoeuvre on international level. Especially, the Franco-Hungarian reconciliation generated tensions in relations with the PCF. These were mitigated however by the convergence of views of the French and Hungarian party directions and the ability of the latter to involve Communists in the opening process while using rivalry between the FCP and the SP. The thesis is based on research in the Hungarian and French archives, the review of newspapers and magazines and interviews

Повний текст джерелаCreated in 1719 to launch a new representation of the "trade” sphere within the general population, the La Rochelle Chamber of Commerce, the central point of a complex institutional organization, participates actively in the political and economic life of the kingdom. In spite of the organic rivalry which weakens it, this ninth Chamber succeeds finally in becoming the privileged representative of the trader and its most fervent supporter. As the middleman between the wheels of power and the trading companies, it becomes not only the mainstay of popular trade, but also its recorder, by collecting numerous items of correspondence and papers relating to trade. In a policy of both participation and dispute, its defense of local interests within the vast national interest is especially to be found in business relations with Northern Europe. Admittedly, the main trade concerns are elsewhere, as this maritime circuit could never compete in importance with colonial traffic and the slave trade. For all that, the Rochelais traders do not intend to give up - which is shown in the route to the North: colonial commodities and French products, strongly desired by the North, but transported almost exclusively under a foreign flag. Famous for being "big debaters and memory makers", the Rochelais do not fail to analyze the root causes of the direct business crisis between Northern Europe and the kingdom. They denounce not only the almost hegemonic control that both the English and the Dutch have over these trade routes, but also the measures adopted by the Versailles offices which they consider too timid. This reality, explained until then, by economic, political and cultural considerations, looks completely different if we consider the legal rule. Analyzed on several levels and in several dimensions, the latter reveals an obvious disparity of treatment between French and foreign traders. Diplomatic agreements, international treaties, customs legislation, institutional framework, all the components of legal rule, play an important role in the functioning of this maritime circuit. However, the correlation between legal rule and trade with the North could not be explained merely by the observance of trade exchanges with the port of La Rochelle. The northern institutional and customs models must also be examined. And yet these models confirm that the specificity of legal rule in some Northern States constitutes a determining element of this maritime chart. Furthermore, the careful analysis of one of the oldest monuments of medieval maritime law, at the origin of the Hanseatic league, leads to a singular discovery: this text, known by the name of "Lois de Visby" shows clearly, in the cradle of Northern Europe, a very clear Roman influence
