On 17 December 1996, the delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross was one of the 600 guests at a reception hosted by the Japanese ambassador in Lima. When the commando unit of the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru — MRTA)carried out its spectacular hostage-taking operation and the ICRC delegate made himself known to the commando unit, wondering whether in so doing he was acting as an intermediary was hardly at the forefront of his mind: he was content to take action because the situation so demanded and because the physical integrity of hundreds of people was under threat. I was that delegate. In doing what I did at that moment, I was merely repeating the humanitarian act performed by hundreds of ICRC delegates throughout the world, that of Henry Dunant at Solferino and of many others elsewhere — that is, helping the victims of violence. This is what being a neutral intermediary is all about: placing oneself voluntarily in the midst of a confrontation and lending a helping hand. In that sense, the term “intermediary” is perfectly suited for defining the action of the ICRC per se and its humanitarian base. Within the organization, the term means something more specific, as distinguished from protection and assistance, and designates a function which involves serving as a messenger between conflicting parties, for humanitarian reasons and in the absence of any other intermediary. This is where a certain amount of confusion and a number of difficulties arise, some inherent in the very role of intermediary and others arising from the circumstances themselves.

The technique of human interaction with computers has developed very rapidly. Body movement is the easiest and most expressive way and hand movements are flexible. We can use gestures as a simple identification command. This research discusses the application of hand gesture reading as a remote control for learning media and analyzes its quality of service using Wireshark software. This system uses a Raspberry Pi as a computing center. Raspberry Pi reads hand gestures using the Convex Hull algorithm, which can read the number of fingers raised on the hand by taking the outermost point in the contour scan of the hand. Each gesture in the form of the number of fingers was allocated to the keyboard commands used to select answers on the learning media. On the learning media side, a quiz system was created that uses keyboard commands to select the answers. Then the Raspberry Pi is connected to the laptop using a third-party application called VNC. Based on QoS measurement results, the throughput result is 62 kbps, which is included in the very good category. Packet Loss of 0%, which is also included in the very good category. The delay of 52.2 ms, which is included in the very good category. Thus, the overall quality of the network can be categorized as very good.

The Polish-Soviet War, which took place between 1919 and 1920, remains one of the most dramatic, yet also one of the brightest pages in the history of the Polish military. Not only did the Polish army achieve a spectacular victory that ensured Poland’s sovereignty and unrestrained development, but also, according to many historians and politicians, saved Europe from the flood of communism. Apart from the famous Battle of Warsaw, the warfare that lasted from February 1919 to October 1920 included the Kiev Offensive, the Battle of Komarów and the Battle of the Niemen River. The war with the Bolshevists was not just a conflict over the borders, but also concerned the preservation of national sovereignty, threatened by the Bolshevists' attempts to spread the communist revolution throughout Europe. The intention of the Polish side, on the other hand, was to separate the nations occupying the regions to the west and south of Russia and to connect them with Poland through close federal ties. The fate of the war was finally decided in August 1920 at the gates of Warsaw. The Polish Army, following the operational plans of the High Command approved by Józef Piłsudski, the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Army, pushed the Red Army east past the Neman River line with a surprising counter-attack. This battle saved Poland's independence and forced the Bolshevists to cancel their plans to spread the communist revolution to the countries of Central and Western Europe.

Magnocellular red nucleus (RNm) is involved in controlling goal-directed limb movements such as reaching to grasp. We tested two hypotheses related to RNm's role in controlling reach-to-grasp movements. One hypothesis is that forelimb RNm neurons are grasp specific, and the other is that they specify the timing of metacarpi-phalangeal (MCP) extension to preshape the hand during the appropriate phase of the reach. We recorded single-unit discharge while monkeys performed two behavioral tasks that elicited similar reaches but differed in grasp. One task consisted of a reach with a precision grasp that elicited independent use of thumb and forefinger; the other included a whole-hand grasp that elicited concerted use of the four fingers. Most RNm neurons tested were engaged strongly during both the whole-hand and precision tasks, and the magnitude of discharge modulation did not differ between tasks. Thus most RNm neurons are not grasp specific but, instead, may contribute to behavioral features common to the two tasks. Two methods were used to investigate relations between single-unit discharge and kinematic data from the same individual trials of the whole-hand and precision tasks for a subset of forelimb RNm neurons. One method focused on correlations between parameters of RNm discharge and the duration, amplitude, and velocity of rotation of forelimb joints for each of the tasks. The second method compared between-task differences in times of peak neuronal discharge to between-task differences in times of rotations of forelimb joints. Parameters of reach-related RNm discharge were more frequently correlated with parameters of MCP extension than with parameters of rotation of wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. Analyses of temporal relations between discharge and kinematic data during both the whole-hand and precision tasks indicate that discharge was time locked most frequently to MCP extension and, to a lesser extent, elbow extension during both tasks. We conclude that RNm may command muscle synergies that provide a basic preshape of the hand at the appropriate phase of limb transport. In addition, the timing of RNm's contribution to hand preshaping varies with the behavioral requirements of the task.

Quadrotor is an unmanned aerial vehicle which is controlled by remote control. Unfortunately, not all of the remote control are easy to use, especially for people who have lacking abilities in piloting. This study aims to design a prototype system to control quadrotor using hand movements, as an alternative to the conventional remote control that more simple. This system is consists of 2 parts, quadrotor and handheld. Both systems can communicate wirelessly using radio frequency 2.4 GHz. The handheld system will read the orientation angle of the hand by IMU sensor and it will be converted into a command to determine the direction motion of the quadrotor. To get the orientation angle from the IMU sensor data, we used DCM sensor fusion method. Quadrotor needs a control system that can make its respond runs optimally. In this study, the method of the control system that used is PID controller. The PID gain obtained using Ziegler-Nichols oscillation method and then fixed again by fine-tuned method.

The work in front of us is dedicated to some exceptional women who command exalted positions, women who sacrificed their personal lives by sharing wartime suffering with the Serbian people and armies during the traumatic war years: the typhoid epidemics, the exodus through the Albanian mountain ranges, the exile on the island of Corfu, Corsica, North Africa, on the Russian Front, and in Dobruja. Thus, this book is a remarkable evidence of the dedicated affection and strenuous work of over 2000 women doctors, medical sisters, and nurses who served in the hospitals of the Serbian Red Cross Society, the Scottish Women’s Hospitals, the hospitals of the Serbian Relief Fund (SRF) and other voluntary and humanitarian organizations, in Serbia itself, and in the exile — both during the Great War and afterwards.

Visually impaired people find difficulties detecting obstacles in front of them, during walking in the street, which makes it dangerous. A lots of blind people suffer in their own lives because of their vision loss. Vision is one of the five important senses in the human body. People with Vision loss have their own disability. Many countries around the world provide special assistance to these needed people to improve their life quality as good as possible. They provide them with special equipment for their disability to improve their daily life like voice message service, electronic stick that guide them while moving around and other specialized equipment. Blind people can't even walk without any aid. Many times they rely on others for help. Several technologies for the assistance of visually impaired people have been developed. This paper proposes a system for blind people. The proposed system aims to create a wearable visual aid for visually impaired people in which speech commands are accepted by the user. Its functionality addresses the identification of objects .This will help the visually impaired person to manage day-to-day activities through his/her surroundings. To help the blind people the visual world has to be transformed into the audio world with the potential to inform them about objects. Therefore, we propose to aid the visually impaired by introducing a system that is most feasible, compact, and cost effective. So, we implied a system that makes use of Raspberry Pi. Raspberry Pi is used to implement artificial vision using python language on the Open CV platform. The system consists of a webcam interfaced with raspberry pi. Pi Camera detects and find the type of object with the help of ultrasonic sensor. Ultrasonic sensor to detect the real time hurdles while walking on the roads. The ultrasonic sensor used in this project plays a vital role. It detects the object in front of this. When object is detected a indication sound is given to the user via earphone. While they hear this sound they can know an obstacle in front of them. The system is intended to provide Raspberry Pi. The proposed system detects an object around them and sends feedback in the form of speech, warning messages via earphone. This new system may solve some of major problems of blind persons that are still existing. The aim of all these systems is to help the user to detect object without the help of a second person. This system is to provide a low cost and efficient obstacle detection aid for blind which gives a sense of artificial vision by providing information about the environmental scenario of static and dynamic object around them, so that they can walk independently. Paraplegia is a paralysis that affects the legs and often seriously affects the lower half of a human body. Paraplegia happens whilst there may be damage underneath the neck. This paper provides a novel design to enhance the conversation of paralysis sufferers. The device is a clever glove that is used to seize hand gestures and convert them into verbal commands. The glove is geared up with sensors and processors that discover the hand gestures and convert them into indicators. The tool is designed to be simple and user-friendly, allowing patients to quickly adapt to its use. The tool is likewise designed to be low-cost and handy, permitting more paralysis patients to use it. The device is tested and evaluated for its performance, and the outcomes display that it may accurately capture and interpret the hand gestures of the sufferers. In most cases paralyzed affected person (like Monoplegia, Hemiplegia, Paraplegia) aren’t capable of interact or communicate with others or their caretaker. Force myography (FMG) signals can read volumetric changes of muscle movements, while a human participant interacts with the environment. For collaborative activities, FMG signals could potentially provide a viable solution to controlling manipulators. In this paper, a novel method to interact with a two-degree-of-freedom (DoF) system consisting of two perpendicular linear stages using FMG is investigated. The method consists in estimating exerted hand forces in dynamic arm motions of a participant using FMG signals to provide velocity commands to the biaxial stage during interactions. Five different arm motion patterns with increasing complexities, i.e., “x-direction”, “y-direction”, “diagonal”, “square”, and “diamond”, were considered as human intentions to manipulate the stage within its planar workspace. FMG-based force estimation was implemented and evaluated with a support vector regressor (SVR) and a kernel ridge regressor (KRR). Real-time assessments, where 10 healthy participants were asked to interact with the biaxial stage by exerted hand forces in the five intended arm motions mentioned above, were conducted. Both the SVR and the KRR obtained higher estimation accuracies of 90–94% during interactions with simple arm motions (x-direction and y-direction), while for complex arm motions (diagonal, square, and diamond) the notable accuracies of 82–89% supported the viability of the FMG-based interactive control.

I read Captain Gyldeń's account of failure of his GPS set (Vol. 50, 328, May 1997) with some interest. A few days earlier we had had a few thunderstorms while I had my personal hand-held GPS running, using its own built-in antenna and a 12 volt battery. It was lying on a bench inside a wooden hut where I keep some of my amateur radio equipment. After one particularly close flash and bang, which produced a one-inch spark from my transceiver antenna, the transceiver locked up and stopped responding to keyboard commands. Then I noticed the GPS set had also stopped working, showing only random symbols on its readout. I feared the worst but, after switching them both off, leaving them for a few minutes, and then back on again, they worked perfectly.Microprocessors locking up in strong local electrostatic fields, perhaps? Maybe if I had simply left them alone they would have started working again after the charge had leaked away. Next time I nearly get hit by lightning I'll try it.

As Nerva’s coinage has been studied almost exclusively with historical hindsight, and with the biases of later historians in mind, there is an impulse to read Nerva’s “weak” character into his coinage. This bias is most pronounced on his coinage bearing military themes, which are interpreted as “apologetic,” “hopeful,” or a “desperate plea” to the army to forestall mutiny. State-sanctioned art did not operate in this way and always presented the emperor positively. Reinterpreted in the context of historical representations, the martial imagery on the coinage was traditional and to be expected of the emperor, who had always played the role of supreme military commander. Although often understood as courting the sympathies of the army, many types are excessively rare, suggesting they had little communicative potential in the Roman world. Those proclaiming the “harmony of the armies” are common throughout the Roman Empire and spoke to a broad audience.

Franklin Roosevelt’s popular appeal is traced to his actions as commander-in-chief, a shorthand for his handling of foreign policy. Norpoth has mined a treasure trove of polls conducted during the 1930’s and 1940’s that probed public opinion about Franklin Roosevelt, foreign and domestic politics, along with party loyalties and electoral choices. FDR won re-election to an unprecedented third term—and then a fourth—because of wartime conditions that highlighted his role as commander-in-chief. FDR’s fabled fireside chats about foreign perils paid off as the American people, in a historic opinion swing, abandoned isolationism and embraced FDR’s policies of aiding France and England in the war with Germany. When it came to his proposals for a massive buildup of the armed forces, the commander in chief was able to count on broad popular support. Those outlays also happened to accomplish what the New Deal had failed to do: vanquish the Depression. FDR’s foreign policy actions in 1940–1941 elevated him to a rare height of popularity. This happened months before the Pearl Harbor attack, which triggered a brief rally. Unlike the experience of nearly all of his successors, FDR’s approval remained unscathed by war and, in particular, the heavy human toll. And finally, it is as a popular commander-in-chief that FDR left behind a G.I generation of loyal Democrats in postwar America, giving that party a commanding role in American politics for decades to come.

Nineteenth-century Britain saw the emergence of a variety of new Dissenting movements which cannot be regarded as belonging to older-established traditions. While some, such as the Brethren, have received considerable attention from historians, others are less well served; indeed, some have discouraged such investigation, partly because of their convictions regarding their divine origin. Consequently, an appreciation of them within their social and religious context has been difficult to achieve. This has been reinforced by the tendency to study such movements in isolation from one another. This chapter establishes where commonalities existed among these movements and between them and Dissent more generally. Those under review fall into several categories. Primitivists looked back to the New Testament as a golden age, from which all subsequent church history had been a decline. The Huntingtonians sought a restoration of a supposed New Testament pattern of spiritual experience. Other primitivists, who may also be called Restorationists, sought to re-establish a pattern of church life replicating that which they read off from the New Testament, or else reacted against such an approach on the basis that it was neither commanded nor possible. Another family of movements adopted a more pragmatic approach, since their primary concern was not the establishment of correct church order but effective evangelism and nurture. The chapter argues that there was a web of connections between these movements, and that they did not in fact develop in isolation from one another. While their pluriformity should not be understated, certain commonalities do emerge. All were suspicious of traditional theological learning. Most emphasized the need for personal conversion. Ecclesiologically, most believed in the sole authority of Scripture, the centrality of communion, the baptism of believers, plural unordained leadership, and often also the autonomy of local congregations; they also tended to be gathered churches. These movements usually began through secession from existing denominations, and this shaped their agenda. A tension felt by most lay between the call for separation from the world and the expression of the unity of all true believers; in several cases, the balance between purity and unity shifted over time. The way in which Scripture was seen as functioning in church life affected the extent and visibility of women’s involvement. Outreach was frequently directed at members of other denominations (who might be regarded as unconverted) as much as at the unchurched. While many of these movements appealed primarily to the working classes and the poor, some such as Brethren and Catholic Apostolics combined this with a middle-class element, and few were democratic in ethos. While there was often a cerebral element to their apologetic, most movements stressed the sovereign freedom of the Holy Spirit to act in and through members. Although their approach to Scripture as propositional truth and their sense of their own mission rendered them liable to division, they have remained a visible part of the British religious landscape to the present.

This chapter explores the convergence between the nascent loyalist paramilitaries, most notably the Red Hand Commando and Young Citizen Volunteers, with the Tartan gangs which had been so prominent throughout 1971. The ‘backlash’ which had been mentioned so often in the press began to become a reality as the loyalist assassination campaign began in earnest and a forceful and frightening subculture gained momentum. A large number of militant loyalists took to the streets and were given the approval of politicians such as William Craig, the former Stormont Minister of Home Affairs.

Chapter Three places the oral histories in the context of the growth of republican violence and in particular focuses on the last weekend of June 1970, when events occurred which led to the formation of the UVF in East Belfast and the organisation of a small militant grouping of young loyalists in North Belfast which would become known as the Red Hand Commando. The chapter explains the importance of John McKeague as a leading loyalist and the way in which his protest against nationalist residents at the Unity Flats interface at the foot of the Shankill Road in 1970 became an ongoing focal point for young loyalists, most notably Tartans and Linfield supporters who were eager to vent their frustrations at the declining security situation in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, the chapter describes how the Tartan movement gained momentum as the first half of 1971 proved to be a dire period for Ulster Protestants.

This chapter describes NATO: how the organization works, how its origins give its members latitude to influence their contingents, and how the commanders of its multilateral efforts cope with the challenges of multilateral contingents. As caveats, red cards, phone calls, and other techniques for managing individual contingents have proven to be problematic, NATO has worked hard to mitigate those techniques' impact upon ISAF's (International Security Assistance Force) effectiveness. Despite these efforts, the alliance cannot hope to compete with national command chains. The chapter then compares the intervention venues that states can use from a theoretical perspective, to include unilateralism, coalitions of the willing, and alliance actions. Abstract Washington had been to Boston once before. In 1756 he had come to plead with the commander of British forces in America for a commission in the British army. He returned in 1775 hoping to defeat the British army. After eight hard days on the road from Philadelphia, Washington arrived at Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston, on July 2. The Continental army had been assembled on a makeshift parade ground for the occasion, but a sudden heavy rainstorm caused a postponement in the festivities. The next day, the new commander met his army amid what one soldier thought was “a great deal of grandor.”Washington read a short speech that included the 101st Psalm, a song of mercy and judgment, and a vow to “destroy all the wicked of the land [and] … cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.” Several soldiers noted his speech in their journals and letters, but none appear to have been especially impressed by its content or delivery. One even remarked: “nothing hapeng extrorderly we preaded [paraded] there times” and were dismissed.

Abstract In politics and diplomacy people often say things that are later systematically misquoted or distorted. John F. Kennedy never said that he was a Berliner, and Harold Macmillan did not say “You’ve never had it so good.” But the fact that such eminent statesmen, whom I greatly admire, had been misrepresented did not diminish my annoyance when I was accused, time and again, of having said that 95 percent of the settlement was ready. What I did say in an interview with my good friend Iftikhar Ali of the Gorbachev gave the armed forces a green light to proceed with a series of ambitious offensives that began in late May with the largest assault ever made against resistance bases in the Kunar valley, a key resistance staging area near the Pakistani border. He also agreed to upgrade the level of Soviet military leadership in Afghanistan. One of the Red Army’s most celebrated heroes, General Mikhail Zaitsev, then serving as commander of Soviet forces in Germany, was transferred to the Afghan front. Significantly, though, while Zaitsev had a free hand to try more aggressive tactics, Gorbachev did not authorize sending more troops, with the exception of several thousand additional spetznaz forces. Moreover, he accompanied the policy of carefully calibrated escalation during 1985 and 1986 with growing diplomatic flexibility designed to test American readiness for a settlement.

He knew them apart in traffic lights, he once told me, only because one was always on top and the other on bottom. signs, particularly: Which are on top and which on bottom; which command you to stop, and which invite you to proceed, and how that might differ, depending who “you” are. After all, schools, whatever else they do, help establish and transmit our society’s cultural signals, those determinative red and green lights. However that might be, it is certainly true that educational institutions always seem to be caught between two prepositions, “in” and “to.” Part of our mission is to instruct students in various disciplines, in history, in literature, in physics. But at the same time, we are expected to orient students to the world outside the classroom, to its creation and recreation in the work they will perform and the ideas they will evolve. find a tension in these prepositions between the voices of the past and the visions of the future. The dilemma may seem familiar, yet another chapter in the honored debate between the Ancients and the Moderns, between those who say “set the students’ eyes firmly upon the ‘monuments of unaging intellect,’ “ and those who say “educere, lead them forth, help them dream, let their ‘thought be mother to the deed.’ ”

This chapter mentions the special schools for military training of revolutionaries, which were opened in the last stages of the Russian Revolution and prepped up students in the Intelligence Department (RU RKKA) of the Red Army General Staff. Between 1927 and 1931, the Comintern's military schools were administered by Tuure Lehén, the son-in-law of the Finnish communist Otto Kuusinen. It discusses Marshal Tito's stay in the Soviet Union until he first disappeared from Moscow in November 1935 and then re-emerged in early September 1936. The chapter recounts Tito's rise in the party hierarchy, which had more to do with the events on the Iberian Peninsula than with those on the Balkan Peninsula. It also refers to survivors of the armed conflict in Spain who would become the backbone of Tito's Partisan army and his Mediterranean operative command.

Steering columns, hydraulic tubes or steel cables needed to be placed between the driver and actuator.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Change began with the introduction of e-gas systems. Mechanical cables were replaced by thin, electric signal wires. The technical solutions and legal standardizations for addressing the steering and braking systems, were not defined at this time.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Today, OEMs are starting E/E-Architecture transformations for manifold reasons and now have the chance to remove the long hydraulic tubes for braking and the solid metal columns used for steering.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">X-by-wire is the way forward and allows for higher Autonomous Driving (AD) levels for automated driving vehicles. This offers new opportunities to design the vehicle in-cabin space.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper will start with the introduction of x-by-wire technologies. It will cover the three aspects of the transformation from line to wire; functional safety (fail operational), security, and availability.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">It will also provide examples of two different implementation approaches, one from a classic OEM with a basic platform vehicle architecture and concept, and the other from the start-up company, REE Automotive, with their skateboard architecture and brand-new concept of REEcorner™ Vehicle Motion.</div></div>

In recent years, the threat of cyberattacks has been increasing annually, necessitating organizations to prioritize security measures. This urgency is particularly critical in healthcare institutions, given their status as crucial infrastructures and the potential risks cyberattacks pose to human lives. However, limited IT investment in healthcare institutions has resulted in inadequate cybersecurity measures and underinvestment in IT infrastructure. Outdated and unsupported operating systems pose significant vulnerabilities, escalating the risk of security incidents. Despite the challenges imposed by limited IT investment, organizations must strive to develop resilience that enables swift recovery in the event of a security incident, even while accepting a certain level of risk. As it stands now, healthcare institutions that have gotten cyberattacks are hesitant to disclose some of the findings of security incidents involving vulnerabilities that have occurred at healthcare institutions because they reveal vulnerabilities within the industry and suggest the possibility of further cyber-attacks. However, NIST SP800-61, which is also a guideline for computer incident response, states that it is important to prepare for the next security incident by learning lessons from past security incidents. In the first half of this study, security incidents that have occurred in healthcare institutions in the past are discussed and issues are organized using the PPT (People, Process, and Technology) framework used to examine cybersecurity measures. In this study, issues were organized based on two hospital incident cases that occurred in Japan in 2021 and 2022 and for which investigation reports were issued.In terms of People (organizations), the lack of security personnel is positioned as the cause of incidents. However, healthcare institutions prioritize patient care, and for economic reasons, there is also the issue of difficulty in securing not only security personnel but also IT personnel.In terms of Process, the issues were that the information collection system for urgent vulnerabilities and the patch application process were not in place, and the password policy was not well maintained and was weak. In terms of Technology, the vulnerability of the equipment and systems had not been addressed, and the anti-virus system was not in operation. Due to the compatibility of the electronic healthcare record system, it was not possible to update the equipment or run the anti-virus.The second half of the paper will focus on People and Processes in particular, and organize their roles in the incident response phase using the Incident Command System (ICS). In a normal ICS, the five actors are Command, Operations, Planning, Logistics, Finance, and Administration, but since many of the roles played by the legal department could be read from the incident case studies, a resilience matrix was organized to identify the relevant actors. In the future, we will further discuss the practicality of the resilience matrix and the triggers and considerations for shifting to the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) when responding to an incident by applying the results of previous studies, such as incident response exercises.

This paper presents the concept and design of a hardware platform for an information technology workshop aimed at first-year electrical engineering students. The workshop provides students with their initial exposure to hardware-oriented programming and project management in a software engineering environment. The platform is centered around a Tiva C LaunchPad embedded on the control board of a remote-controlled vehicle. The hardware design of the remote vehicle is modularized into three boards: the control board, battery management board, and power management board. Additionally, a remote-control interface has been developed. The hardware platform leverages various capabilities of the Tiva C LaunchPad, including GPIO, ADC, PWM, and UART, although the I2C capabilities are not utilized in the workshop.Students work in groups of three to gain valuable project management experience. While each student is responsible for developing an individual hardware-related class, these classes are utilized for group tasks. To prevent complete group failure in case of one student's inability to finish their class, example classes are provided as usable libraries. The organization of responsibilities within the group is left to the students, and a project plan and Gantt chart timeline are mandatory.The hardware design adopts a modular structure that effectively separates main functions and power levels. The battery management board hosts the main fuse and an emergency shutdown relay, connected to a reed switch. It facilitates the connection between the batteries and the power management board. PWM signals from the control board on the power management board actuate two 12V brushless DC electric motors. Additional connections to the control board include a 5V power supply, a proportional measurement of the battery voltage, and control over the revolution speed of the drives. The control board, which houses the Tiva C LaunchPad, is also connected to ultrasonic sensors, an ESP8266-Module, and the power control board. The remote-control interface, featuring another Tiva C LaunchPad, facilitates human-machine interactions through an 8-bit display, a joystick, and navigation buttons. The remote control is powered by a 5V power bank.The software architecture also follows a modular approach, leveraging object-oriented programming principles. Seven different classes instantiate hardware-related functionalities. Additionally, four hardware-independent classes are employed. While all the functions of the remote-controlled vehicle are consolidated in one hardware-independent class, three are dedicated to remote control operation: Steering, responsible for reading joystick input and mapping it to commands; Display, enabling user output through an interactive menu; and Remote, serving as the central class that brings together low-level and other hardware-independent classes.In conclusion, this hardware platform offers first-year electrical engineering students a practical and comprehensive introduction to hardware-oriented programming and project management. The workshop provides students with hands-on exposure to industry-relevant technologies and a collaborative learning experience. The platform's integration of software and hardware components promotes a holistic understanding of systems engineering principles.

The Army's Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) program is much bigger than the two ambitious high speed helicopters that Bell and Sikorsky will now get more than $1 billion to build. At least five other major moving pieces must come together on time to turn the final aircraft, whoever makes it, into a working weapon: - a new Improved Turbine Engine built by GE; - helicopter-launched mini-drones called Air Launched Effects (ALE); - a new Long-Range Precision Munition (LRPM), with the Israeli Spike-NLOS as the initial version; - an Integrated Missile Launcher (IML) to launch both the missile and the drones; - and the underlying electronic framework of standards and interfaces to plug it all together, the Modular Open Systems Architecture (MOSA). *Recently, FARA has added a 20mm Gatling Gun being developed by The Advanced Rotorcraft Armament and Protection System (ARAPS) program team at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Center (CCDC) Armaments Center The Army is "not just focused on the air vehicle, but focused on the weapon system," said Brig. Gen. Walter Rugen, Future Vertical Lift director at Army Futures Command, in a call this morning with reporters. [1] While some have questioned the viability of fielding the FARA in ten years, e.g. by 2028, others have offered reasons on why the plan for a next-gen recon aircraft needs to be accelerated. Who knows how much money will be available to the Army for sustaining its aviation fleet as budget walls close in over the next several years? Trilliondollar deficits have a way of impinging on defense budgets. What is proposed, though, is that the Army compress its development schedule for a new armed recon rotorcraft so that our soldiers begin to be better equipped against the likes of Russia and China somewhere around 2025, rather than after 2030. A whole lot can happen in ten years. We don't need another Army development program to be overtaken by events. (2) However, since the FARA will likely be in service for a half-century or more, it makes sense to conduct rigorous analysis up front to ensure that what is fielded has the capabilities to provide the most value for the warfighter and the taxpayer. Prior to spending billions of dollars and decades producing the FARA aircraft, it is prudent to spend the time to determine what the right solutions should be. Many projects fail when the initial requirements are not well thought out and the ramifications are not clearly understood. To solve the tension between these conflicting desires, designers need to iterate the design sensitivities with operational analysis to show the pros and cons of each attribute, alone and in concert, but ultimately the Army must prioritize its requirements and potentially make hard trade-off decisions.(3) The major objective of this paper is provide a methodology for the necessary understanding of the push and pull of technology readiness and application through trade studies and operational analysis early to avoid disappointments and to minimize FARA slippages and cost increases. This will be accomplished by reviewing Lessons Learned from the AHIP/OH-58D Kiowa Warrior and the LHX/RAH-66 Comanche development programs. While the authors were directly involved in these programs as Army Aviation engineers, managers and senior executives, the major emphasis for this paper will be to address how the government-industry teams brought these programs successfully through initial development. Fortunately, for the AHIP/OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Development Program there are excellent documentation of the government-industry team participation in References 4 and 5. While the authors strongly endorse the lessons learned in these documents, they will have a few of their own. For the LHX/RAH66 Comanche Development Program there is considerably less documentation; however, the authors will provide Army and their lessons learned. It is hoped that this paper and the referenced documents will be read, and the lessons learned by both government and industry involved in the FARA development program.
