This thesis is an investigation of methods and architectures for autonomous multi-agent reconfigurable controllers. As part of the analysis two components are looked at: the fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) component and the controller reconfiguration (CR) component. The FDD component detects and diagnoses faults. The CR component on the other hand, adapts or changes the control architecture to accommodate the fault. The problem is to synchronize or integrate these two components in the overall structure of a control system. A novel approach is proposed. A multiagent architecture is used to interface between the two components. This method allows the system to be viewed as a modular structure. Three types of agent are defined. A planner agent Ap, a monitor agent Am and a control agent Ac. The monitor agent takes the role of the FDD component. The planner and control agents on the other hand take the roles of CR component. The planner decides which controller to use and passes it on to Ac. It also decides on the parameter settings of the system and changes it accordingly. It belongs to the reactive agent category. The planner agent's internal architecture maps its sensor data directly to actions using a pre-set rule based conditional logic. It was decided that this architecture would reduce the overall complexity of the system. The monitor agent Am belongs to the learning agent category. It uses an algorithm called adaptive resonance theory neural network or ART-NN to autonomously categorize system faults. Am then informs the other agents of the fault status. ART-NN was chosen due to the fact that it does not need to be trained with sample data and learns to categorize data patterns on the fly. This allows Am to detect unmodelled system faults. The control agent Ac also belongs to the learning agent category. It uses a multiagent reinforcement learning algorithm to learn a controller for the system at hand. Once a suitable controller has been learnt, the parameters of the controller are passed to Ap for it to be stored in its memory and learning is terminated. During control execution mode, controller parameters are sent to Ac from Ap. The novel approach is demonstrated on a case study. Our laboratory-built 4-wheeled skid-steering vehicle complete with sensors is designed as a way of demonstration. Several faults are simulated and the response of the demo system is analyzed.

With the ever-increasing demand for wireless communications, there is a great need for efficient designs of electromagnetic systems. Reconfigurable electromagnetic systems are very useful because such designs can provide multi-functionality and support different services. The geometrical topology of an electromagnetic element is very important as it determines the element’s RF performance characteristics. Origami geometries have significant advantages for launch-and-carry electromagnetic devices where devices need to fold in order to miniaturize their size during launch and unfold in order to operate after the platform has reached orbit. This dissertation demonstrates a practical process for designing reconfigurable electromagnetic devices using origami structures. Four different origami structures are studied and the integrated Mathematical-Computational-Electromagnetic models of origami antennas, origami reflectors and origami antenna arrays are developed and analyzed. These devices provide many unique capabilities compared with the traditional designs, such as band-switching, frequency tuning, polarization adjustment and mode reconfigurability. Prototypes are also manufactured to validate the performances of the designs. These designs change their geometry naturally, and they can be compactly packaged into small volume, which make them very suitable for spaceborne and satellite communication. Origami antennas and origami electromagnetics are expected to impact a variety of applications related to communications, surveillance and sensing.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMSs) have the ability to reconfigure hardware and control resources at all of the functional and organizational levels. This allows for quick adjustment of production capacity and functionality in response to sudden changes in market or in regulatory requirements. This study evaluates the characteristics and operation of automated reconfigurable assembly lines using discrete event simulation. The assembly line uses a conveyor system which transports pallets to various machines to perform the assembly process. Different conveyor configurations are developed for the same assembly process using Simio simulation software. A part family consisting of five variants are assembled on the same assembly line with a large variation in the production quantities for each product. This requires the assembly system to be able to quickly adjust its functionality and capacity. Multi-objective optimization is performed on the models through the use of a Pareto exhaustive search experiment. The two contradicting objectives used are the throughput rate of the system and the average work in progress, with the aim of maximizing the former and minimizing the latter. From the Pareto exhaustive search experiment, a Pareto front is constructed showing which configuration is preferred under certain operation conditions. However it is concluded that the Pareto front can be tailored to fit the specific needs of the decision maker, depending on what the decision maker is willing to pay. An experiment that evaluates the effect of changing the conveyor speed is performed. It is established that under certain operating conditions, increasing the conveyor speed higher than the ceiling value will not improve the performance of the system. A production scenario was also developed which include different order sizes for each of the five parts of the part family. The configurations have to alter their capacities based on the order sizes to test which system performs the best under these operating conditions. For this experiment, the ramp-up time was of interest but the best system was chosen based on the combination of throughput rate and the average work in progress. From the results of the different experiments, it is recommended to first determine the maximum capacity and the operating logic before choosing one of the configurations. Once this is decided, the information gathered from the experiments can then be tailored for the decision maker to establish the best operating conditions for the chosen con guration. The developed simulation models are used as a Decision Support System for future research on the topic. It is recommended for future research to focus on using Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) instead of a conveyor system as transportation method.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Herkonfigureerbare Vervaardigingstelsels (HVSs) het die vermoee om alle hardeware en beheer hulpbronne, op alle funksionele en organisatoriese vlakke te herkonfigureer. Dit maak dit moontlik vir vinnige verstellings aan produksie kapasiteit en funksionaliteit, indien daar 'n skielike verandering in die mark of wetgewing is. Hierdie studie evalueer die karakteristieke en werking van outomatiese herkon gureerbare monteerlyne met behulp van diskrete gebeurtenis simulasie. Die monteerlyne gebruik vervoerbande om pallette na verskeie masjiene te vervoer, sodat die parte aanmekaar gesit kan word. The main goal of this research is to develop algorithms to facilitate the use of a new type of antenna, called multifunctional reconfigurable antenna (MRA). Traditional antennas have fixed radiation properties which cannot be changed to adapt to different environments. To solve this problem, MRAs, which can dynamically change its operation frequency, radiation patter, and polarization, has gained a significant interest recently. Such antennas can support multiple radio access technologies with different sets of operational requirements. Reconfigurable antennas are considered smart antennas. The efficient use of smart antennas requires efficient and smart underlying algorithms. This dissertation focuses on developing efficient algorithms to exploit the reconfigurability of MRAs to tap on the superior performances offered by additional degrees of freedom compared to legacy antenna systems.

The first was using a Field-Programmable Analog Array (FPAA) to model the cable behavior of dendrites using analog circuits. The second was to design, lay out, and test part of a new FPAA, the RASP 2.9v. The final project was to use floating-gate programming to remove offsets in a neuromorphic FPAA, the RASP Neuron 1D.

Dynamic reconfiguration of logic circuits has been a research problem for over four decades. While applications using logic reconfiguration in practical scenarios have been demonstrated, the design of these systems has proved to be a difficult process demanding the skills of an experienced reconfigurable logic design expert. This thesis proposes an automatic synthesis method which relieves designers of some of the difficulties associated with designing partially dynamically reconfigurable systems. A new design abstraction model for reconfigurable systems is proposed in order to support design exploration using the presented method. Given an input behavioural model, a technology server and a set of design constraints, the method will generate a reconfigurable design solution in the form of a 3D floorplan and a configuration schedule. The approach makes use of genetic algorithms. It facilitates global optimisation to accommodate multiple design objectives common in reconfigurable system design, while making realistic estimates of configuration overheads and of the potential for resource sharing between configurations. A set of custom evolutionary operators has been developed to cope with a multiple-objective search space. Furthermore, the application of a simulation technique verifying the lll results of such an automatic exploration is outlined in the thesis. The qualities of the proposed method are evaluated using a set of benchmark designs taking data from a real reconfigurable logic technology. Finally, some extensions to the proposed method and possible research directions are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The thesis evaluates control strategies for reconfigurable manufacturing systems by using a welding assembly cell as a case study. The cell consists of a pallet magazine, conveyor, feeder subsystem (comprising an articulated robot and singulation unit), welder subsystem (which uses a modular Cartesian robot), and inspection and removal subsystems. The research focuses on control strategies that enhance reconfigurability in terms of structure, hardware and software using agent-based control and the IEC 61499 standard, based on PC control. Reconfiguration may occur when a new product is introduced, as well as when a new subsystem is introduced or removed from the production cell. The overall control architecture is that the subsystems retain no knowledge of the product, but product information resides in the cell controller, while services offered by the subsystems are registered with the directory facilitator of the Java agent platform. The control strategies are implemented on the modular Cartesian weld robot and the cell controller for assembly cell. A layered architecture with low-level control and high-level control is used to allow separation of concerns and rapid changes in both hardware and software components. The low-level control responds in hard real-time to internal and external events, while the high-level control handles soft real-time actions involving coordination of control related issues. The results showed IEC 61499 function blocks to be better suited to low-level control application in distributed systems, while agents are more suited for high-level control. Modularity in software components enhances hardware and software scalability. Additionally, agents can support online reconfiguration of reconfigurable machines.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die tesis evalueer beheerstrategieë vir herkonfigureerbare vervaardigingstelsels deur gebruik te maak van ’n sweismonteersel as ’n gevallestudie. Die sel bestaan uit ’n palletmagasyn, vervoerbande, voersubstelsel (bestaande uit ’n geartikuleerde robot en singulasie-eenheid), sweissubstelsel (wat gebruik maak van ’n modulêre Cartesiese robot), en inspeksie- en verwyderingsubstelsels. Die navorsing fokus op beheerstrategieë wat herkonfigureerbaarheid verhoog in terme van struktuur, hardeware en sagteware met behulp van agent-gebaseerde beheer en die IEC 61499 standaard, wat gebaseer is op PC-beheer. The millimetre-wave (mm-wave) spectrum offers considerable advantages in terms of antenna form factor and spectrum availability. However, use of this region often requires reconfigurable antennas and systems. Initially, a review of the various applications which are taking hold in the lower regions of the mm-wave spectrum (30 to 100 GHz) is undertaken. Specifically, reconfigurable reflectarray technologies are selected for further research, and critical analysis of the reconfiguration techniques for including these in antennas is considered. Silicon as an optically activated semiconductor is chosen as the reconfiguration mechanism due to its low cost and the scope for improvement in this area. A new form of illumination is used, replacing traditional infra-red (IR) lasers with high power IR-LEDs enclosed in a cavity, increasing the efficiency of the silicon illumination. However, to make use of this novel illumination source, and subsequently integrate it into an antenna, the silicon response has to be characterised within Ka-band. This is done through measurements in a waveguide-based characterisation test cell, from which the complex electromagnetic properties of silicon under IR-LED illumination are retrieved with the aid of full-wave simulations. Using the measured conductivity properties of the illuminated silicon, reflectarrays with non-uniform amplitude distributions can be designed. Through variation of illumination intensities of IR-LEDs throughout the array, it is shown through measurements and full-wave simulations that unit cell reflections can be modified while phases are kept relatively constant. This theoretically allows switching between, for example a low side-lobe pattern binomial array, or a narrow beamwidth pattern Chebyshev array. To implement this, a novel multilayer unit-cell is designed, integrating the IR-LED. This is then used in a full reflectarray design which is measured. The key contributions of this work include the novel illumination mechanism and its integration into a reflectarray antenna, and the use of reconfigurable photoconductive materials to provide a mechanism for beam shaping and pattern synthesis at Ka-band.

Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) are composed of standard synchronous reconfigurable logic islands that communicate with each other via an asynchronous means. Past research into fully asynchronous FPGA has demonstrated high throughput and reliability adopting dual-rail encoding. GALS FPGAs have been proposed, relying on bundled-data encoding and fixed asynchronous communication between synchronous islands. This thesis proposes a new GALS FPGA architecture with fully reconfigurable asynchronous fabric, that relies on coarse-grained Configurable Logic Blocks (CLBs) to improve the communication capability of the device. Through datapath dedicated elements, asynchronous pipelines are efficiently mapped onto the device. The architecture is presented as well as the customized tool flow needed to compile Verilog for this new coarse-grained reconfigurable circuit.The main purpose of this thesis is to map communication-purpose user-circuits on the proposed asynchronous fabric and evaluate their performance. The benchmark circuits target the design of a Networkon-Chip (NoC) router and employ two-phase bundled-data protocol. The results are obtained through simulation and compared with the performances of the same circuits on a fine-grained classical FPGA style. The proposed architecture achieves up to 3.2x higher throughput and 2.9x lower latency than the classical one. The results show that the coarse-grained style efficiently maps asynchronous communication circuits, and it may be the starting point for future reconfigurable GALS systems. Future work should focus on improving the back-end synthesis and evaluating the FPGA GALS system as a whole.
Globala Asynkrona Lokalt Synkrona (GALS) FPGAer består av standardiserade synkrona rekonfigurerbara logiska öar som kommunicerar med varandra på ett asynkront sätt. Tidigare forskning om helt asynkrona FPGAer har demonstrerat att hög genomströmning och tillförlitlighet kan erhållas mha sk dual-rail kodning. Referenskretsarna som används för utvärdering är en NoC router som använder sig av ett tvåfas kommunikationsprotokoll. Resultaten erhålls genom simulering och jämförs med prestanda av samma krets implementerad i en finkornig klassisk FPGA-stil. Den föreslagna arkitekturen uppnår ca 3.2x högre genomströmning och 2.9x lägre latens än den klassiska. Resultaten visar att en grovkornig stil kan mappa asynkrona kommunikationskretsar på ett effektivt sätt, och att det kan vara en bra utgångspunkt för framtida omkonfigurerbara GALS-system.Framtida arbete bör fokusera på att förbättra back-end-syntesen och att utvärdera FPGA GALS-systemet i sin helhet.

Performance and power consumption are most important issues while designing embedded systems. Several studies have shown that cache memory consumes about 50% of the total power in these systems. Thus, the architecture of the cache governs both performance and power usage of embedded systems. A new N-way reconfigurable data cache is proposed especially for embedded systems. This thesis explores the issues and design considerations involved in designing a reconfigurable cache. The proposed reconfigurable data cache architecture can be configured as direct-mapped, two-way, or four-way set associative using a mode selector. The module has been designed and simulated in Xilinx ISE 9.1i and ModelSim SE 6.3e using the Verilog hardware description language.

In this paper, the design, analysis, and characterization of reconfigurable antennas based on radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical systems (RF MEMS) operating in the United States' public safety (PS) bands are presented. The design methodology of these antennas, which are different from the normal antenna design, is also reported. In this thesis, two electrically small reconfigurable antenna designs have been presented, with two and three modes of operation, and central frequencies of 718 and 4960 MHz and of 857,809 and 4960 MHz, respectively. The maximum frequency tunable ratio achieved in these designs is 7. The recongurability between the modes is achieved by one and three RF MEMS switches in all three designs. These switches enable a change in the length of the current flow path, thereby changing the resonance frequencies. The measurement results for impedance and radiation characteristics of the fabricated antennas prototypes are also presented, and agree reasonably well with the simulations results from An-soft HFSS.

Cette thèse porte sur l'élaboration d'un micro-noyau original de type hyperviseur, appelé Ker-ONE, permettant de gérer la virtualisation pour des systèmes embarqués sur des plateformes de type SoC et fournissant un environnement pour les machines virtuelles en temps réel. Nous avons simplifié l'architecture du micro-noyau en ne gardant que les caractéristiques essentielles requises pour la virtualisation, et fortement réduit la complexité de la conception du noyau. Sur cette base, nous avons mis en place un mécanisme capable de gérer des ressources reconfigurables dans un système supportant des machines virtuelles. Les accélérateurs matériels reconfigurables sont mappés en tant que dispositifs classiques dans chaque machine. Grâce à une gestion efficace de la mémoire dédiée, nous détectons automatiquement le besoins de ressources et permettons une allocation dynamique des ressources sur FPGA. Suite à diverses expériences et évaluations sur la plateforme Zynq-7000, combinant ARM et ressources FPGA, nous avons montré que Ker-ONE ne dégrade que très peu les performances en termes de temps d'exécution. Les surcoûts engendrés peuvent généralement être ignorés dans les applications réelles. Nous avons également étudié l'ordonnançabilité temps réel dans les machines virtuelles. Les résultats montrent que le respect de l'échéance des tâches temps réel est garanti. Nous avons également démontré que le noyau proposé est capable d'allouer des accélérateurs matériels très rapidement
This thesis describes an original micro-kernel that manages virtualization and that provides an environment for real-time virtual machines. We have simplified the micro-kernel architecture by only keeping critical features required for virtualization, and massively reduced the kernel design complexity. Based on this micro-kernel, we have introduced a framework capable of DPR resource management in a virtual machine system. DPR accelerators are mapped as ordinary devices in each VM. Through dedicated memory management, our framework automatically detects the request for DPR resources and allocates them dynamically. According to various experiments and evaluations on the Zynq-7000 platform we have shown that Ker-ONE causes very low virtualization overheads, which can generally be ignored in real applications. We have also studied the real-time schedulability in virtual machines. The results show that RTOS tasks are guaranteed to be scheduled while meeting their intra-VM timing constraints. We have also demonstrated that the proposed framework is capable of virtual machine DPR allocation with low overhead

Markets for manufactured products are characterized by a fragmentation of the market (with regards to size and time), and by shorter product cycles. This is due to the occurrence of mass customization and globalization. In mass customization, the same basic products are manufactured for a broad market, but then consumers are given the liberty to choose the “finishing touches” that go with the product. The areas that manufacturers now compete for are higher quality products, low cost and timely response to market changes. Appropriate business strategies and manufacturing technologies must thus be used to implement these strategic dimensions. The paradigm of Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) has been introduced to respond to this new market oriented manufacturing environment. The design of RMS allows ease of reconfiguration as it has a modular structure in terms of software and hardware. This allows ease of reconfiguration as a strategy to adapt to changing market demands. Modularity will allow the ability to integrate/remove software/hardware modules without affecting the rest of the system. RMS can therefore be quickly reconfigured according to the production requirements of new models, it can be quickly adjusted to exact capacity requirements as the market grows and products change, and it is able to integrate new technology. In this research project, real-time, open controller is designed and developed for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Tools (RMTs). RMTs are the basic building blocks for RMS. Real time and openness of the controllers for RMT would allow firstly, for the modular design of RMTs (so that RMTs can be adapted easily for changing product demands) and secondly, prompt control of RMT for diagnosability.

The constantly growing capacity of reconfigurable devices allows simultaneous execution of complex applications on those devices. The mere diversity of applications deems it impossible to design an interconnection network matching the requirements of every possible application perfectly, leading to suboptimal performance in many cases. However, the architecture of the interconnection network is not the only aspect affecting performance of communication. The resource manager places applications on the device and therefore influences latency between communicating partners and overall network load. Communication protocols affect performance by introducing data and processing overhead putting higher load on the network and increasing resource demand. Approaching communication holistically not only considers the architecture of the interconnect, but communication-aware resource management, communication protocols and resource usage just as well. Incorporation of different parts of a reconfigurable system during design- and runtime and optimizing them with respect to communication demand results in more resource efficient communication. Extensive evaluation shows enhanced performance and flexibility, if communication on reconfigurable devices is regarded in a holistic fashion.

Kommunikationsprotokolle beeinträchtigen die Performanz der Kommunikation durch Daten und Rechen- overhead, die ebenso zu erhöhter Netzwerklast sowie Ressourcenanforderungen führen. In einem ganzheitlichen Kommunikationsansatz wird nicht nur das Kommunikationsnetzwerk berücksichtigt, sondern außerdem Ressourcenverwaltung, Kommunikationsprotokolle und die anderweitige Verwendung vorhandener, temporär ungenutzter Kommunikationsressourcen. Durch Einbeziehung dieser Aspekte während Entwurfs- und Laufzeit und durch Optimierung unter Berücksichtigung der Kommunikationsanforderungen, wird eine ressourceneneffizien tere Kommunikation erreicht. Ausführliche Evaluationen zeigen, dass eine ganzheitliche Betrachtung von Kommunikationsfaktoren, Verbesserungen von Performanz und Flexibilität erzielt.

Portable devices, such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, notebooks, etc., have become an indispensable part of our daily life. Mobility requires energy autonomy, which is achieved with the use of batteries. Due to stringent size and weight requirements, batteries do not last sufficiently long under high-power loads, counteracting many of the perceived benefits of mobile computing and communications. Consequently, energy efficiency has become one of the key design challenges. This dissertation studies two different approaches toward the design of energy-efficient portable electronic systems. The first approach abstracts a set of interdependent tasks, executed by the system, as a time-varying load on the battery. We assume that the system can operate at multiple supply voltages and clock frequencies. The goal is to develop algorithms for energy-aware task scheduling, exploiting the capability of changing the supply voltage and the clock frequency. Automated optimization of energy efficiency for battery-powered systems is inadequate without accurate predictions of the available energy, i.e. the lifetime of the battery, under a given load. Therefore, a key component of this effort involves the development of a robust model of battery behavior and efficient methods for predicting battery lifetime. The second part of this dissertation explores hardware-software cosynthesis for reconfigurable processors, with energy efficiency as the main objective. Hardware components in such processors can be reconfigured to respond to changes in user demands. Reconfigurability allows for system flexibility, thus reducing product volatility, time-to-market and cost of development and manufacturing. Even though hardware programmability offers a variety of benefits, the reconfiguration cost in terms of power dissipation and delay is the key factor limiting system performance. To address energy and delay issues associated with reconfiguration, we develop a method for binding user program blocks either to a software execution unit or to a reconfigurable hardware execution unit, accounting explicitly for energy and delay penalties due to both computations and configurations. In addition, we describe the organization of the reconfigurable hardware space that allows for simple dynamic placement and routing of hardware objects, and propose an efficient method for reducing the amount of reconfiguration during routing in such environment.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This work considers the control of reconfigurable assembly systems using a welding assembly system as a case study. The assembly system consists of a pallet magazine, a feeding system, an inspection and removal system, a welding system and a conveyor. The aim of the work is to compare PC and PLC as controllers, as well as to compare two different approaches to reconfigurable control. The control system of the pallet magazine was developed using a PC and a PLC. The PC control was programmed using Visual C#, while the PLC was programmed in Ladder Logic using Siemens S-300 STEP7. The two controllers were compared based on the attributes that measure the quality of a controller's software, which include its capability, availability, usability and adaptability. The approaches to reconfigurable control considered were the agent-based methodology and the IEC 61499 distributed control methodology, both of which were applied to the feeding system. The agent-based control system was implemented using the JADE agent platform, while the IEC 61499 distributed control system was implemented using the FBDK software kit. These two methods were compared based on the characteristics of a reconfigurable system, which include the system's modularity, integrability, convertibility, diagnosability, customization and scalability. The result obtained in comparing the PC to the PLC shows that the PLC performs better in terms of capability, availability and usability, while the PC performs better in terms of adaptability. Also, the result of the comparison between the agent-based control system and the IEC 61499 distributed control system shows that the agent-based control system performs better in terms of integrability, diagnosability and scalability, while the IEC 61499 distributed control system performs better in terms of modularity and customization. They are, however, on a par in terms of convertibility.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie werk beskou die beheer van herkonfigureerbare monteringstelsels met 'n sweismonteringstelsel as gevallestudie. Die monteringstelsel bestaan uit 'n paletmagasyn, 'n voerstelsel, 'n inspeksie-en- verwyderingstelsel, 'n sweisstelsel en 'n voerband. Die mikpunt van die werk is om persoonlike rekenaars (PCs) en programmeerbare-logikabeheerders (PLCs) as beheerders te vergelyk, asook om twee verskillende benaderings tot herkonfigureerbare beheer te vergelyk. Die beheerstelsel van die paletmagasyn is ontwikkel met 'n PC en 'n PLC. Die PC-beheer is in Visual C# geprogrammeer, terwyl die PLC in leerlogika met Siemens S-300 STEP7 geprogrammeer is. Our world is filled with large-scale engineering systems, which provide various services and conveniences in our daily life. A distinctive trend in the development of today's large-scale engineering systems is the extensive and aggressive adoption of automation and autonomy that enable the significant improvement of systems' robustness, efficiency, and performance, with considerably reduced manning and maintenance costs, and the U.S. Navy's DD(X), the next-generation destroyer program, is considered as an extreme example of such a trend. This thesis pursues a modeling solution for performing simulation-based analysis in the conceptual or preliminary design stage of an intelligent, self-reconfigurable ship fluid system, which is one of the concepts of DD(X) engineering plant development. Through the investigations on the Navy's approach for designing a more survivable ship system, it is found that the current naval simulation-based analysis environment is limited by the capability gaps in damage modeling, dynamic model reconfiguration, and simulation speed of the domain specific models, especially fluid network models. As enablers of filling these gaps, two essential elements were identified in the formulation of the modeling method. The first one is the graph-based topological modeling method, which will be employed for rapid model reconstruction and damage modeling, and the second one is the recurrent neural network-based, component-level surrogate modeling method, which will be used to improve the affordability and efficiency of the modeling and simulation (M&S) computations. The integration of the two methods can deliver computationally efficient, flexible, and automation-friendly M&S which will create an environment for more rigorous damage analysis and exploration of design alternatives. As a demonstration for evaluating the developed method, a simulation model of a notional ship fluid system was created, and a damage analysis was performed. Next, the models representing different design configurations of the fluid system were created, and damage analyses were performed with them in order to find an optimal design configuration for system survivability. Finally, the benefits and drawbacks of the developed method were discussed based on the result of the demonstration.

This dissertation evaluates the software and hardware components used to develop a Reconfigurable Assembly System with an Integrated Information Management System. The assembly system consists of a modular Cartesian robot and vision system. The research focuses on the reconfigurability, modularity, scalability and flexibility that can be achieved in terms of the software and hardware components used within the system. The assembly system can be divided into high-level control and low-level control components. All information related to the product, Cartesian positioning and processes to follow resides in the Information Management System. The Information Management System is the high-level component and consists of a database, web services and low-levelcontrol drivers. The high-level system responds to the data received from the low-level systems and determines the next process to take place. The low-level systems consist of the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and the vision system. The PLC controls the Cartesian robot’s motor controllers and handles all events raised by field devices (e g. sensors or push buttons). The vision system contains a number of pre-loaded inspections used to identify barcodes and parts, obtain positioning data and verify the products’ build quality. The Cartesian robot’s positioning data and the vision system’s inspections are controlled by the Information Management System. The results showed that the high-level control software components are able to add more modularity and reconfigurability to the system, as it can easily adapt to changes in the product. The high-level control components also have the ability to be reconfigured while the assembly system is online without affecting the assembly system. The low-level control system is better suited to handling the control of motor controllers, field devices and vision inspections over an industrial network.

Experimental nonlinear dynamics is an important area of study in the modern engineering field, with engineering applications in structural dynamics, structural control, and structural health monitoring. As a result, the discipline has experienced a great influx of research efforts to develop a versatile and reliable experimental methodology. A technical challenge in many experimental studies is the procurement of a device that exhibits the desired nonlinear behavior. As a result, many researchers have longed for a versatile, but accurate, testing methodology that has complete freedom to simulate a wide range of nonlinearities and stochastic behaviors. The objective of this study is to develop a reconfigurable test setup as a tool to be used in a wide range of nonlinear dynamic studies. The main components include a moving mass whose restoring force can accurately be controlled and reprogrammed (with software) based upon measured displacement and velocity readings at each time step. The device offers control over nonlinear characteristics and the equation of dynamic motion. The advantage of having such an experimental setup is the ability to simulate various types of nonlinearities with the same test setup. As a result, the data collected can be used to help validate nonlinear modeling, system identification, and stochastic analysis studies. A physical test apparatus was developed, and various mechanical, electrical, and programming calibrations were performed for reliable experimental studies. To display potential uses for the reconfigurable approach, examples are presented where the device has been used to create physical data for use in change detection and deterioration studies. In addition, a demonstration is presented of the device's ability to physically simulate a large-scale orifice viscous damper, devices commonly used for vibration mitigation in bridges and buildings.; For a large-scale viscous damper, physical testing is required to ensure structural design properties. However, due to the large scale of the dampers, expensive dynamic loading tests can be carried out at a very limited number of facilities. Using the reconfigurable test setup, the dynamic signature of the large-scale viscous damper can accurately be simulated with pre-collected data. The development of a system capable of emulating the restoring force of a nonlinear device with software is a novel approach and requires further calibration for increased reliability and accuracy. A discussion regarding the challenges faced when developing the methodology is presented and possible solutions are recommended. The methodology introduced by this apparatus is very promising. The device is a valuable experimental tool for researchers and designers, allowing for physical data collection, modeling, analysis, and validation of a wide class of nonlinear phenomena that commonly occur in a wide variety of engineering applications.

Runtime dynamic reconfiguration of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and devices incorporating microprocessors and FPGA has been successfully utilized to increase performance and reduce power consumption. While previous methods have been successful, they typically do not consider the runtime behavior of the application that can be significantly affected by variations in data inputs, user interactions, and environmental conditions. In this dissertation, we present a dynamically reconfigurable system and design methodology that optimizes performance and power consumption by determining which coprocessors to implement with an FPGA based upon the current application behavior.For dynamically reconfigurable systems, in which the selection of hardware coprocessors to implement within the FPGA is determined at runtime, online estimation methods are essential to evaluate the performance and power consumption impact of the hardware coprocessor selection. We present a base profile assisted online system-level performance and power estimation framework for estimating the speedup and power consumption of dynamically reconfigurable embedded systems.Importantly though, complex interactions between multiple application tasks, non-deterministic execution behavior, and effects of operating system scheduling introduce significant challenges. To address these, we further present an adaptive online performance and power estimation framework suing kernel speedup coefficient adaptation that monitors and adapts the changing application and system behavior for multitasked applications. By exhaustively examining predefined voltage and frequency settings for the microprocessor and hardware kernels, the potential speedup and power reduction can be effectively estimated for each configuration and voltage/frequency settings. These estimates can be utilized to determine the optimal system configuration. At the same time, the kernel speedup coefficients for each kernel can be dynamically updated to account for the difference between the estimated and actual performance measured at runtime.Finally, in order to quickly determine kernel selection and voltage and frequency settlings, we present an efficient, online heuristic performance and power estimation framework that significantly decreases execution time at the cost of a small increase in power consumption. This online heuristic estimation framework achieves significant power reduction compared to software only implementation without performance degradation.

Traditional corrective maintenance is both costly and ineffective. In some situations it is more cost effective to replace a device than to maintain it; however it is far more likely that the cost of the device far outweighs the cost of performing routine maintenance. These device related costs coupled with the profit loss due to reduced production levels, makes this reactive maintenance approach unacceptably inefficient in many situations. Blind predictive maintenance without considering the actual physical state of the hardware is an improvement, but is still far from ideal. Simply maintaining devices on a schedule without taking into account the operational hours and workload can be a costly mistake. The inefficiencies associated with these approaches have contributed to the development of proactive maintenance strategies. These approaches take the device health state into account. For this reason, proactive maintenance strategies are inherently more efficient compared to the aforementioned traditional approaches. Predicting the health degradation of devices allows for easier anticipation of the required maintenance resources and costs. Maintenance can also be scheduled to accommodate production needs. This work represents the design and simulation of an intelligent maintenance management system that incorporates device health prognosis with maintenance schedule generation. The simulation scenario provided prognostic data to be used to schedule devices for maintenance. A production rule engine was provided with a feasible starting schedule. This schedule was then improved and the process was determined by adhering to a set of criteria. Benchmarks were conducted to show the benefit of optimising the starting schedule and the results were presented as proof. Improving on existing maintenance approaches will result in several benefits for an organisation. Eliminating the need to address unexpected failures or perform maintenance prematurely will ensure that the relevant resources are available when they are required. This will in turn reduce the expenditure related to wasted maintenance resources without compromising the health of devices or systems in the organisation.

Antennas enable wireless communication by transmission and reception of electromagnetic (EM) signals, which carry information is space. Signal reception and hence the quality of service depends significantly on the antenna properties, e.g. radiation pattern, operational frequency, and polarization. Legacy antennas, with their fixed properties, fail to adapt to the changing environment and degrade signal quality. Reconfigurable antennas (Ras) capable of changing their properties dynamically increase the capacity and data rate of wireless systems while offering a compact design. However, these advantages come at the cost of increased complexity compared to legacy antennas. Therefore it is important to design Ras with minimal complexity. To that end, this dissertation focuses on the development of a novel approach, three different Ras operation at three different frequency bands have been designed, fabricated and characterized. First RA works at the 5GHz band (4.9-5.1GHz) and obtains on current beam steering and 3-dB beam width variability. An algorithm to choose the optimum mode of operation has also been developed. The design approach introduced in first RA has been exploited to design the second RA, which achieves beam steering and beam width variability for two polarizations and operates a the 28 GHz band (27.5-28.3 GHz). The third RA operates at the 3GHz band and simultaneously reconfigures impedance and radiation patterns.

Increasingly System-On-A-Chip platforms which incorporate both micropro- cessors and re-programmable logic are being utilized across several fields ranging from the automotive industry to network infrastructure. Unfortunately, the de- velopment tools accompanying these products leave much to be desired, requiring knowledge of both traditional embedded systems languages like C and hardware description languages like Verilog. We propose to bridge this gap with Twill, a truly automatic hybrid compiler that can take advantage of the parallelism inherent in these platforms. Twill can extract long-running threads from single threaded C code and distribute these threads across the hardware and software domains to more fully utilize the asymmetric characteristics between processors and the embedded reconfigurable logic fabric. We show that Twill provides a sig- nificant performance increase on the CHStone benchmarks with an average 1.63 times increase over the pure hardware approach and an increase of 22.2 times on average over the pure software approach while reducing the area required by the reconfigurable logic by on average 1.73 times compared to the pure hardware approach.

The use of embedded Internet systems is growing rapidly in the manufacturing sector. These systems allow the monitoring and controlling of plant machinery and manufactured items from a remote location via a standard Web interface. In a manufacturing environment, it is inevitable that long running processes will require support for dynamic reconfiguration because, for example, machines may fail, services may be moved or withdrawn and user requirements may change. In such an environment it is essential that the operation and architecture of such processes can be modified to reflect such changes. This research project will present methods and ideas for establishing a reconfigurable remote system by using standard 8-bit microcontrollers and reconfigurable hardware. It will allow a manufacturing process to be modified and changed within minutes without even having to be physically present at the location where the process is running.

The South African (SA) manufacturing industry requires developing similar levels of sophistication and expertise in automation as its international rivals to compete for global markets. To achieve this, manufacturing plants need to be managed extremely efficiently to ensure the quality of manufactured products and these plants must also have the relevant infrastructure. Furthermore, this industry must also compensate for rapid product introduction, product changes and short product lifespan. To support this need, this industry must engage in the current trend in automation known as reconfigurable manufacturing. The aim of the study is to develop a reconfigurable assembly system with enhanced control capabilities by utilizing virtual commissioning. In addition, this system must be capable of assembling multiple different products of a product range; reconfigure to accommodate the requirements of these products; autonomously reroute the product flow and distribute workload among assembly cells; handle erroneous products; and implement enhanced control methods. To achieve this, a literature study was done to confirm the type of components to be used, reveal design issues and what characteristics such a system must adhere to. Software named DELMIA was used to create a virtual simulation environment to verify the system and simultaneously scrutinize the methods of verification. On completion, simulations were conducted to verify software functions, device movements and operations, and the control software of the system. Based on simulation results, the physical system was built, and then verified with a multi agent system as overhead control to validate the entire system. The final results showed that the project objectives are achievable and it was also found that DELMIA is an excellent tool for system verification and will expedite the design of a system. By obtaining these results it is indicated that companies can design and verify their systems earlier through virtual commissioning. In addition, their systems will be more flexible, new products or product changes can be introduced more frequently, with minimum cost and downtime. This will enable SA manufacturing companies to be more competitive, ensure increased productivity, save time and so ensure them an advantage over their international competition.

The use of robots in the automation sector adds value to the production line because of their versatility. They can be programmed to follow specific paths when moving material from one point to another and their biggest advantage is that they can operate for twenty-four hours a day while delivering consistent quality and accuracy. Vision-Guided Robots (VGRs) are developed for many different applications and therefore many different combinations of VGR systems are available. All VGRs are equipped with vision sensors which are used to locate and inspect various objects. In this study a robot and a vision system were combined for a pick-and-place application. Research was done on the design of a robot for locating, inspecting and picking selected components from a moving conveyor system.

The reconfigurable aperture (RECAP) is a reconfigurable antenna consisting of a dense array of electronically controlled elements, which can be manipulated to support many antenna functions within a single architecture. RECAPs are explored herein as an enabling technology for future software defined and cognitive radio architectures, as well as compact wireless devices supporting many bands and services. First, the concept of a parasitic RECAP is developed and analyzed for various communication applications. This begins with the analysis of existing RECAP topologies (e.g. planar and parasitic) using a hybrid method combining full wave simulations and network analysis. Next, a performance versus complexity analysis is performed to assess the use of a parasitic RECAP for the most critical communications functions: pattern synthesis, MIMO communications and physical-layer wireless security. To verify simulation results, a prototype parasitic RECAP is also built and deployed in real propagation environments. Given the potential of adaptive and reconfigurable architectures for providing enhanced security, an idealized reconfigurable antenna is analyzed, resulting in the concept of secure array synthesis. The objective is to find optimal array beamforming for secure communication in the presence of a passive eavesdropper in a static line-of-sight (LOS) channel. The method is then extended to the case of multipath propagation environments. The problem is solved by casting it into the form of a semi-definite program, which can be solved with convex optimization. The method is general and can be applied to an arbitrary array topology with or without antenna mutual-coupling. Due to complexity of the problem, initial attention has been restricted to idealized reconfigurable antennas (smart antennas), where excitation amplitude and phase at each element can be controlled independently. Lastly, reconfigurable antennas are investigated as a solution to support the emerging application of over-the-air (OTA) testing in a low-cost and compact way, resulting in the concept of the reconfigurable over-the-air chamber (ROTAC). First, an idealized two-dimensional ROTAC is analyzed, revealing that the fading distribution, spatial correlation, frequency selectivity, and multipath angular spectrum can be controlled by proper specification of the random loads. Later, a prototype of ROTAC is built to study the fading statistics and angular characteristics of the multipath fields inside a practical chamber.
