Abstract The research focuses on determining the application parameters of a new process developed by Cloos. With the use of Cloos Rapid Weld technology (metal active gas welding), the authors carried out welding experiments on S235JR steel sheets (6 mm and 8 mm thick). The results of the welding experiments were verified by hardness measurement [1–3]. The goal is to establish one side one row suitable welded joint by the used technology.

An innovative rapid prototyping technique for embedding microcomponents in PDMS replicas was developed and applied on a thermal mass flowmeter for closed loop micropump flowrate control. Crucial flowmeter design and thermal parameters were investigated with a 3-D fully coupled electro-thermal-fluidic model which was built in Comsol Multiphysics 5.2. The flowmeter was characterized for three distinct measuring configurations. For precise low flowrate applications, a sensor-heater-sensor flowmeter configuration with a constant heater temperature was found to be the most appropriate yielding the measuring range of 0 to 90 µL·min−1 and the sensitivity of 1.3 °C·µL−1·min in the lower flowrate range of 0 to 40 µL·min−1.

Based on product configuration and modular design, a product rapid design method for customer individual requirements was proposed. Aiming at the product configuration correlation of this product rapid design method, we classify the product in accordance with the product functional modular classification principle, define the correlation between the functional modules, set up the correlation matrix between each module and recognize the customer demand of individual product configuration immediately by using the exclusion algorithm. At last, taking multimedia LCD projector as paradigm, we verify this method.

In order to realize the complex product rapid configuration design in the environment of mass configuration (MC), the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NGSA) for product rapid configuration design is proposed in this paper. The model of multi-objective product configuration optimization is established, and hierarchical analysis is made for configuration design. By comparing the similarity and integrity of requirement and instance, the sequence of retrieval instances is given according to the reuse degree, and multi-objective optimization configuration based on NGSA is realized. Finally, the validity and practicability of the method is verified by an instance which is applied in rapid configuration design of the drive module of tuyere puncher.

Any geophysical measurement is a filter through which the distribution of a certain physical parameter in the subsurface is seen, and the sensitivity function is a characteristic of the method that reveals the nature of this filter. Insight into the structural pattern of the sensitivity function pertaining to a certain transmitter-receiver configuration provides the geophysicist with an image that allows an immediate qualitative understanding of the characteristics of the method. The assets and shortcomings of different measuring configurations can be discussed and understood, and the sensitivity function permits qualified predictions about resolution characteristics of new configurations and measuring strategies. I evaluated a rapid and accurate method for calculating 3D sensitivity functions of a homogeneous half-space model for a wide variety of transient electromagnetic configurations using the central loop and an airborne offset loop configuration as examples. Computations of 3D sensitivity functions were performed as convolutions in the time domain between the electric fields from the transmitter and the receiver, had it been used as a transmitter. The 2D and 1D sensitivity functions are found through numerical integration of the 3D functions. Beside offering insight into the resolution capability of the measuring configuration, the sensitivity functions lend themselves to rapid calculations of approximate responses and derivatives in various modeling and inversion strategies.

With the rapid development of the offshore wind power, the design of the collection system for offshore wind farms attracts widespread attentions. In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the connection property and switchgear configurations of collection systems of offshore wind farms, a comprehensive reliability assessment model and the corresponding calculation method for the traditional switchgear configuration and the complete switchgear configuration are proposed. Taking an actual planned offshore wind farm for example, the reliability of two switchgear configurations are evaluated, and the sensitivity analyses on factors affecting the reliability of the wind farms such as the failure rate and MTTR of the cables and switchgears are performed. The result shows that the complete switchgear configuration is the better choice for offshore wind farms considering reliability indexes.

In this article, the yielding and plastic flow of a rapid-prototyped ABS compound was investigated for various plane stress states. The experimental procedures consisted of multiaxial tests performed on an Arcan device on specimens manufactured through photopolymerization. Numerical analyses were employed in order to determine the yield points for each stress state configuration. The results were used for the calibration of the Hosford yield criterion and flow potential. Numerical analyses performed on identical specimen models and test configurations yielded results that are in accordance with the experimental data.

Bacteriophage-encoded lysins are an emerging class of antibacterial enzymes based on peptidoglycan degradation. The modular composition of lysins is a hallmark feature enabling optimization of antibacterial and pharmacological properties by engineering of lysin candidates based on lysin and non-lysin modules. In this regard, the recent introduction of the VersaTile technique allows the rapid construction of large modular lysin libraries based on a premade repository of building blocks. In this study, we perform a high-throughput construction and screening of five combinatorial lysin libraries with different configurations, targeting Klebsiella pneumoniae. An elaborate analysis of the activity distribution of 940 variants and sequencing data of 74 top hits inhibiting the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae could be associated with specific design rules. Specific outer membrane permeabilizing peptides (OMPs) and enzymatically active domains (EADs) are significantly overrepresented among the top hits, while cell wall binding domains (CBDs) are equally represented. Especially libraries with the configuration (OMP–linker–CBD–EAD) and the inverse configuration (CBD–EAD–linker–OMP) yield the most active variants, with discernible clusters of variants that emerge above the remaining variants. The approach implemented here provides a blueprint for discovery campaigns of engineered lysins starting from libraries with different configurations and compositions.

Energy usage in cities is intertwined with its spatial configuration—the denser and more compact the city, the more concentrated and efficient the energy usage is to be expected. To achieve sustainable communities, cities (and their inhabitants) must reconsider its spatial configurations in the context of rapid urbanisation and growth in light of limited resources and conflicting spatial claims. This article seeks to understand how spatial configurations affect transport energy usage in cities and propose an integrated assessment approach factoring spatial configurational analysis in relation to transport energy usage at the micro- and macroscale. Comparing Bergen, Norway, and Zürich, Switzerland, findings showed that spatial configurations were positively correlated to transport energy usage. Street structures suitable for walking and less suitable for car traffic tended to exhibit lower amounts of energy usage. Following this, nine typologies of transport and land use patterns are described to support planning for more sustainable means of transport.

As many U.S. metropolitan areas expect unprecedented growth in population and travel in the next 20 to 30 years, rail transit agencies are faced with the challenges of replacing their aging fleets and procuring new vehicles to keep up with ridership increases. As funds become increasingly scarce, many operators are exploring ways of increasing car capacity by considering interior configurations (to maximize loading efficiency) and door configurations (to minimize the effect of increased loads on station dwell times). Few studies address the design and evaluation of interior and door configurations as a system. Typically, seating configurations are designed separately from door configurations. Furthermore, interior configuration evaluations or maximum vehicle loading quoted by car manufacturers assume a uniform loading density applied throughout the car. Loading on transit vehicles, however, varies greatly within a car. This affects practical vehicle capacity and its impact controlling dwell time at the busiest door. The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, a heavy rail rapid transit system in California, recently conducted an evaluation of interior and door configurations based on a methodology that used variable loading densities and resulting impact on door loads for dwell time estimation. Variable loading density is more realistic in simulating actual passenger loading experience. This research shows that depending on the interior and door configuration, applying uniform loading density may misrepresent actual car capacity and door loads and thus waste valuable resources or underestimate actual needs.

A Modular Reconfigurable Robot (MRR) composed of standard joint and link modules has the advantages of rapid changeover of assembly configurations for a diversity of application requirements. To tackle the kinematics analysis issues for an MRR, it is essential to develop a generic method to mathematically represent all possible assembly configurations and automatically generate their kinematic models. In this paper, two types of robot modules, i.e., revolute joint modules and rigid link modules, are considered as the basic building blocks of an MRR. The topological structure of an MRR is represented by a graph, termed an Assembly Graph (AG), in which all robot modules, regardless of their types, are treated as vertices, while the connecting interfaces between any two robot modules are treated as edges. Based on graph theory, a modified adjacency matrix, termed an Assembly Adjacency Matrix (AAM), is proposed to represent the assembly configuration of an MRR, in which the three-dimensional assembly information is specified with connecting port vectors for the adjacent modules. A path matrix derived from the AAM of an MRR is employed to describe the connecting sequence of its constituting modules. The local frame representation of the Product-of-Exponentials (POE) formula is employed, which is configuration-independent. Therefore, for an MRR configuration represented with an AAM, its kinematic model will be automatically generated according to its path matrix. The proposed assembly configuration representation and kinematic modeling method are validated through a dual-branch MRR configuration.

The ceramic-resin composite structure has broad prospects in many fields like rapid casting and thermal protection. Due to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of resin is about 10 times higher than that of ceramic, the excessive thermal expansion of the resin pattern will lead to the undesirable crack of the ceramic shell during the heating procedure. The proposed approach is to find a reasonable resin configuration minimizing the thermal stress in the ceramic shell. Simultaneously, the mechanical stiffness of the whole structure should be maintained at a certain level to resist the pressure applied on the ceramic shell. In the actual production, the periodic resin configurations are more operable than the disordered configuration, so finding reasonable periodic resin configurations for ceramic-resin composite structure has lots of significance. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the topology optimization method into the periodic resin configuration design for ceramic-resin composite structure. A structural topology optimization procedure in combination with thermo-mechanical finite element analysis has been developed. A single-layer periodic model and a double-layer periodic model are optimized and respective CAD models are rebuilt according to the optimal results. By comparing with the existing hexagonal honeycomb configuration, two optimal designs have shown better performances both in reducing the thermal stress in the ceramic shell and maintaining the stiffness of the whole structure.

AbstractThe ability to deliver large volumes of intravenous (IV) fluids may be critical to the successful prehospital resuscitation of hypovolemic patients. We compared the time required to deliver one liter of crystalloid solution, using an administration set-up consisting of a 16-guage (g), 1.25 inch, intravenous cannula, a pneumatic pressure bag, and either conventional intravenous tubing (3.2 mm internal diameter [ID]) or large bore (4.4 mm internal diameter [ID]) “shock” tubing. With the fluid bag positioned at 110cm (46 inches) above the level of the cannula, the mean elapsed time to deliver 1,000ml using the conventional tubing set-up was 6.0 minutes, while the same volume could be delivered in only 2.7 minutes with the shock tubing configuration. This time was reduced to 1.8 minutes when the intravenous cannula size was increased to 14g. By attaching a liter of fluid to each arm of the “Y” adapter of the shock tubing, virtually uninterrupted fluid flow may be maintained at this rate. We feel this intravenous configuration could enhance greatly the ability of paramedics to provide fluid resuscitation in the field setting. When such IVs are established en route to a receiving hospital, this technique may prove to be an important adjunct to improving patient outcome from hypovolemic shock.

Design resources reuse is very important to the rapid response design. In this paper, a design resources reusable model based on product family is established to meet the rapid response design. Firstly, parameters transmission structure of product family is constructed based on Generic Bill of Materials (GBOM) and product master model, and then the reused design resource library is established by the instantiation to master model. Finally product configuration management and variant design is realized on the basis of the reused design resource library. In the developing process of the rapid response design system of machine tool component, the Linear Motion (LM) rolling guide variant design subsystem is developed by the application of the above methods to realize the variant design and configuration management of LM rolling guide. The result shows that the method can provide a reliable guarantee for establishment and effective management of corporate design resource base.

An important role in product variety management is finding an accurate variety extent to which the product matches the consumer’s expectations. In principle, customers prefer to have more rather than less versions of a product from which to choose. This motivates producers to offer a richer variety of goods. As a consequence, it brings a large amount of manufacturing complexity, and configuration conflicts may frequently occur. In order to avoid a situation in which a customer will select mutually incompatible components, product configurators usually recommend corrective actions for generating valid configurations. Nevertheless, the presence of infeasible configurations in customer options are negatively perceived by customers, and therefore it has an unfavorable impact on the sustainability of mass customization. One way to solve this problem is to eliminate, or at least reduce, mutually incompatible components. When considering the fact that eliminating all incompatible components may cause a rapid decrease in product variety, then the reduction of incompatible components can help to solve the product configuration problem. The proposed method aims to find a trade-off solution between minimizing configuration conflicts and maintaining a sufficient level of mass customization. Moreover, two supplementary methods for the determination of infeasible product configurations are proposed in this paper. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed methods are demonstrated by two practical examples.

A software comprehension tool defines an abstract software model, views on this model, analyses creating the model, and a mapping between model and view. For creating new comprehension tools, we configure online analyses, models, views and their mappings instead of hand-coding them. In this paper, we introduce an architecture allowing such an online configuration and, as a proof of concept, a framework implementing this architecture. In several examples, we demonstrate the generality and flexibility of our approach.

In allusion to the rapid design for building door and window products, a rapid design method based on generalized modularization was put forward. According to the combination of generalized modules, the product configuration model was automatically generated on the basis of generalized modular planning, and then the rapid design for building door and window products was realized by the instantiation of product configuration model. With the method, product designs and associated knowledge can be reused and the design cycle can be effectively shortened. A designing system for building door and window products was developed and applied in some enterprises, with satisfactory results.

Aiming at rapid response to requirements of mechanical transmission products customization, a system for rapid locking assembly variant design was proposed in terms of features of locking assembly. The bases of the system are Product Configuration Model (PCM) and Case-Based Reasoning (CBR). According to the system, PCM of locking assembly was built by extending traditional Generic Bill of Materials (GBOM). In addition, integration of PCM and CBR was completed by combining method of transforming PCM to a case with similarity assessment algorithm. Moreover, a rapid variant design software system based on PCM and CBR for locking assembly was developed. Finally, the software system was applied to design new locking assembly. Results demonstrate that it is effective for PCM-CBR to support rapid response to customization.

Healthcare systems engineering in emergency departments (EDs) are developing rapidly in the world nowadays. Fast track (FT) as a rapid treatment system is considered to facilitate ED patient flow. To know how FT can improve the performance of ED, one should study the best configuration of resources for implementation of FT. This research presents a pattern for implementation of FT systems in hospital EDs using healthcare simulation paradigms. Simulation-based optimization model uses modeling and simulation capabilities to generate configurations of FT resources and its patient prioritization pattern with Arena[Formula: see text] simulation software. A decision making method is used to select the optimal configuration based on pre-specified performance indicators. The results imply that the proposed FT implementation pattern is efficient and capable of improving patient flow.

Product configuration design and simulation analysis are of critical importance in the rapid response to performance-driven product design. Product configuration design is the transition from customer specifications into physical solutions, while simulation analysis compared with testing result explains that physical solutions are correct and applicable to engineering. Configuration rules play an important role in the product configuration design. Finite element analysis (FEA) has been used widely in the simulation analysis. We could regard the simulation data of FEA as the important knowledge source of configuration rules. Then, a methodology of integration between product configuration design and simulation analysis is proposed to realize the dynamic update of configuration rules. An application of a clamping unit of injection molding machine that illustrates the proposed approach is developed at the end of the paper.

To remedy the defects of conventional pneumatic ABS (anti-lock Braking system) controller testing equipment for commercial vehicles, such as low efficiency and difficult testing condition configurations, a workflow was proposed based on the unit integration test mode. The relationship among the operation logic of the ABS valves, test conditions, and wheel speed was derived through the simulation of a multi-condition configuration. Then, a wheel speed simulation model was set up by taking the test conditions as inputs, and it was implanted into an embedded control unit. Next, the hardware module and the underlying drivers as well as an application algorithm for the application layer were designed. A prototype of the EOL (end-of-line) test system was built. The test results show that the prototype can not only achieve a rapid test condition configuration and accurate fault location but that it can also meet the requirements for test efficiency.

The tomography technique is an effective way to quantitatively evaluate damage from reconstruction imaging in structure health monitoring (SHM). The reconstruction algorithm for the probabilistic inspection of damage (RAPID) algorithm based on the signal difference coefficient (SDC) feature is a promising approach due to its superior performance. This paper focuses on the influence of different patterns of PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) sensor array configurations, i.e., the circular, square, and parallel array, on reconstruction image qualities for evaluating hole and crack damage. Variable shape parameters are applied to account for the unequal damage distances of different actuator-sensor pairs. Considering the directionality scattering fields of cracks, the angular scattering pattern of the SDC values are studied by simulation. The SDC variations for different groups of sensing paths at the same actuator are applied to predict the crack orientation. An improved RAPID algorithm is proposed by defining an additional SDC value of 1 in the path along the predicted crack orientation, which is determined by the point of the actuator causing the minimal SDC variation and the center point of the initial reconstruction image of the crack. The results show that the improved RAPID algorithm is effective for the evaluation of crack damage. Reconstruction image qualities with three PZT sensor array configurations for both holes and cracks are compared. The research is significant for selecting the PZT sensor array configuration in SHM.

In rat pancreatic islets, gap junctional subunits (GJS) occur under two different configurations, namely in linear single strands and in polygonal particle aggregates. The present freeze-fracture study demonstrates that GJS can rapidly (dis)assemble into one of these membrane specializations without changes in their total number. Isolation of the pancreatic gland and its perfusion at 2.8 mM glucose is accompanied by a decrease in polygonally packed GJS from 46 to 16%. A rise in medium glucose concentration is followed, within 10 min, by a dose-dependent increase in the percent polygonal particles. This glucose effect on gap junction configuration is calcium dependent and reversible upon glucose removal; it is still entirely detectable when protein synthesis is blocked by cycloheximide. These results indicate that islet gap junctions are dynamic structures that rapidly adjust their configuration to extracellular regulators of beta-cell function. In the light of previous observations, it is suggested that this rapid (dis)assembly of gap junctional structures be considered as a component in the ionic and metabolic coupling between insulin-containing beta-cells of the pancreas.
