This paper renders role of local/community radio on rural development in general and rural community development process in particular. By applying library based research method, necessary informations are generated through literature review. This paper highliths that community radio has brought positive impacts particularly in seven thematic areas (i.e. suitability, agricultural transformation, promoting participatory democracy, voice of voiceless, information/ discussion forum on local issues, empowering unprivileged rural people and contribution on good governance). Thus, better to offer radio programs by the local level authorities in such thematic areas for strengthning rural development process in general and rural community development process in particular.

Radio RASI FM is a community radio that organizes and broadcasts the tradition of ‘ngaruat lembur’, the tradition of expressing gratitude to God, and to ward off disasters as well. This radio performs documentation starting from data searching to creating a form of cultural documentation. The study purpose was to see the documentation process of the traditional culture of ‘ngaruat lembu’ at RASI FM radio. The research used the case study method through qualitative method approach to the owner, broadcaster of radio and community of Cisewu Village. The study results indicated that RASI FM radio documented the ‘ngaruat lembur’ tradition through the recording and management process. Recording activities started from the collection of information and records in the form of pouring data. Management activities consisted of the distribution of duties as an on-air announcer, off-air broadcaster, and audio-visual documentation. Then, the storage of written broadcast results on radio and data into audio-visual media was performed and preservation of documents through the separation and maintenance of audio-visual media. Based on that, we constructed a model of the cultural documentation process of ‘ngaruat lembur’ on RASI FM radio. The radio serves as a preserver of rural community traditions through the ‘ngaruat lembur’ program, which is followed by all circles of society. However, the radio team did not yet have a digital-based form of audio-visual documentation maintenance. Nevertheless, RASI FM radio has become a forum for transferring traditional information of Cisewu Village community.

The present article is a study of radio fatwa in Indonesia with special reference to the Tanya-Jawab genres in radio dakwah. The concept of fatwa has changed over time. Such Islamic Tanya-Jawab programmes broadcast on radio dakwah are important to understand how fatwa is disseminated by means of media, since Islamic Tanya-Jawab programmes can be considered as part of fatwa. These programmes give not only information about Islam, but also become a forum in which interpretation of Islam takes place. This can be seen in the discussion on the Islamic ruling on eating “dog meat”, in which interpretation of Islamic law is highly contested.[Artikel ini mendiskusikan radio fatwa di Indonesia, utamanya tentang program tanya-jawab yang disiarkan radio dakwah.

The new model of developing electronic democracy through e-democracy makes local democracy very dynamic. The level of public trust in radio is very high with an indicator of the number of community members who voluntarily inform all incidents in Blitar City and Regency. This new concept in the framework of radio journalism is referred to as citizen journalism. This study intends to develop a tripartite model of local democracy between the information giver (complainant), the handling agency (the agency complained) and the media (radio) as a bridge in solving the problem. So far the research method used is using qualitative methods with emphasis on participatory aspects. Radio owners, program directors, reporters and listeners who complain are the core informants in this study. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling using data or source triangulation and theory triangulation as a test tool. The results of this study are in the form of the city langlang program as a forum for public discussion on air in the form of complainants reporting their problems to the radio through sms, telephone, e-mail and social media. The model developed is not only on air but also off water, so that complainants can communicate with related parties via the Mayangkara FM radio bridge.

The problem of economic empowerment of rural society is very complex because of various rural conditions with various limitations such as education level, skill, and lack of facilities and infrastructures among others are communication means which are expected to be able to bridge to interact in dealing with various problems in rural areas. The means of communication that can reach all the inferior rural areas is community radio. Radio as an information media has a strategic role in synergizing various resources and elements of both the government, private, community, college. Community radio can bring the distance between the various gaps that exist in rural communities. With the program of radio broadcast interactive dialogue will be an educational process to the community because there will be an exchange of ideas and education that can involve many parties and the community umm in solving various problems faced by the community; both in the strategic, tactical and technical levels that are mutually beneficial so that there will be mutualist symbiosis. The mid-1930s saw broadcasters, educators, and researchers coalesce around the study and implementation of critical listening for educational radio as a new technology for school instruction. These early media literacy researchers were motivated by ambitions to counter distracted and passive listening caused by commercial radio, advertising, and propaganda; to foreground the aural sense in classrooms dominated by reading and writing; and to promote democratic listening in young people. The following investigation draws from previously unexamined archival materials from research centers and radio schools of the air in Ohio and Wisconsin in addition to the oral history of Dorothy Gordon, progressive host of the Youth Forum educational program on New York Times–owned WQXR-AM. This article provides a critical perspective on the role of listening, sound technologies, and literacies for contemporary concerns about political polarization, tensions between commercial and noncommercial media, and democratic engagement.

The impact of the radio in the 1930s can be compared to the force of change in people's lives today caused by current technology. Marguerite V Hood (1903-92), a recognized leader in the music education profession during the 1930s, understood the importance of music education radio broadcasts for rural one-room schools and music education classes. In 1936, she began a series of broadcasts in an effort to reach all children in Montana and was appointed radio director for the KGVO Montana School of the Air program. Hood recognized the necessity of using contemporary resources in music education, a need that exists today. Music educators who offer learning experiences encompassing various music listening activities and musical styles through all types of media provide students with a rich, fertile environment for cultivating the understanding and appreciation of all music genres.

The article examines the technical modernization of Siberian radio communications and broadcasting during the war period. Under the conditions of a large-scale evacuation of industrial facilities and the population to the Siberian region as well as the organization of new telephone and telegraph highways in the eastern direction wire telecommunications worked at the limit of its capabilities and could not cope with the load. In these conditions radio communication was often the only means of communication. Among the evacuated enterprises deployed on the territory of Siberia most of them were the enterprises of the radio industry. One of the main problems faced by the Siberian radio communications, in addition to the shortage of qualified personnel, was the lack of backup equipment, which the front desperately needed. Another difficulty was the restructuring of the radial telecommunication system which entailed the modernization of the transmitters of the main radio communication. In the conditions of an acute shortage of material resources for civil radio communications radio communication activities had to be seriously limited. In general, it was necessary to temporarily abandon the program of continuous radio coverage of the country developed in the pre-war period. First of all, the radio stations were set up at enterprises, city and rural streets and squares, in clubs, libraries, etc. At the same time, as far as possible, the park of radio points was expanded and the operability of radio centers was maintained. Thanks to the mobilization of internal reserves and measures of an administrativerepressive nature in Siberian radio communications it was possible to strengthen the material and technical basis. The industrial production of radio products (mainly for military purposes) was launched in Siberia. However, the quality level of radio communication was low. Since the main efforts were aimed at meeting the needs of the front and the liberated regions the total power of the Siberian radio network has not yet been able to match a large territory of the region and the average power of broadcast transmitters has also remained low. Development of broadcast networks was primarily happened in cities. So, a significant disproportion between the density of radio coverage in urban and rural areas preserved and increased.

A brief review was done based on the literatures available and the findings from these research studies are used to evaluate its effectiveness on rural livelihood upliftment, poverty alleviation and implications for education and further research. Rural development in India is one of the most important factors for the growth of the Indian economy. Even after seventy years post-independence, India has not been able to come under “developed nation”, instead the nation is still developing. Public administration, governed by bureaucratic structures that dominated the twentieth century has failed to respond to the changing requirements of the present times. ICT plays a prominent role in strengthening societal development and helps to speed up the developmental process and can also bridge gaps between the educationally and technologically backward and forward sections of society. Various e-governance projects have attempted to improve the reach, enhance the base, minimize the processing costs, increase transparency and reduce the cycle times. For example, the introduction of computer and e-chaupal, radio farm forum, community radio, and ministry of rural development mobile apps such as shramik bandhu, janmanrega, meri sadak app, etc., are some of the initiatives by the government that have up to some extent been able to bring the rural population in contact with technologies. There are great opportunities for ICT application that help in democratic and sustainable development of rural India. This review mainly focuses on various ICT-based applications and their role in the Rural Development of India.

This research attempts to study the role of radio programming on agricultural development schemes in Osun State, Nigeria, with Osun State Broiler Outgrower Production Scheme (OBOPS) And Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Programme (O-REAP) as case study as well as radio’s involvement in agriculture, with a review of an indigenous agricultural program, Aroko Bodunde, broadcast on the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, Orisun FM, 89.5, Ile-Ife, a community radio station. Powerful-Effect Model and Agenda Setting Theory served as the framework for this study while adopting the descriptive survey of research. Findings revealed that radio programming role in the development of agriculture cannot be overemphasized, as the messages conveyed via the radio wave has helped to increase awareness, inform, enlighten, educate as well as encourage and mobilize listeners to embrace agriculture. Furthermore, findings showed that Orisun FM, 89.5, had a positive influence on listeners which enhanced the development of OBOPS and O-REAP agricultural schemes. It was therefore recommended that governments at all levels in Nigeria should employ community radios in quickening the pace of agricultural development and schemes as radio has proven to be adequately appropriate in giving impetus for the development of all kinds at any level.

This study explores the controversy of SIGMA (Konsultasi Agama or Religious Consultation) at Bhasa Radio 93.1 FM Situbondo as the representation of how grassroots Muslims perceive Islamic law. SIGMA is an aired interactive forum discussing current issues of Islamic law engaging a host, a speaker, and listeners. However, it sparks controversy particularly because of the stigma of a liberalist. This research, therefore, focuses on the typology of SIGMA perspective through the opinion of its speakers, genealogy beyond their thought, and the controversy that comes along. As a qualitative field study with a socio-philosophical approach, it used interviews with 14 informants consisting of SIGMA speakers and staff as well as listeners from diverse backgrounds. It turns out that; firstly, SIGMA’s perspective indicates a progressive type of thought rather than liberal as stigmatized because of the employment of maqas{id al-syari’ah during discussing the issue and making decisions afterward. Secondly, the thinking model can be traced back historically to NU (Nahdlatul Ulama’) reformists who likely use maqas{id al-syari'ah to examine Islamic law along with a progressive mindset. SIGMA speakers furthermore tend to employ advancement of ijtihad and contextual fiqh like what bahs| al-masa'il forums typically do. Thirdly, the controversy stems mainly from the negative stigma which tends to be loudly and sporadically expressed making sympathetic voices unheard. This implies how grassroots Muslims interact with Islamic law in both textual and contextual realms particularly when coping with the changing situation and dynamic methodologies.

Purpose: This study assessed the influence of Micro-Veg radio program tagged “Ramo-Elefo” on the awareness and adoption of the innovations introduced as well as its effects on adoption of the innovations among the listeners in south-western Nigeria. Methodology: Data was collected through structured pretested questionnaire administered on 383 respondents who were randomly selected in two states (Oyo and Osun) in south-western Nigeria. Descriptive statistics as well as the binary probit regression model were used to analyse the data. Findings: Results show that more females listen and therefore are more aware of the program and the innovations. Of all those who are aware, most are simply satisfied. Most of the respondents that got aware of innovations on land selection and bed preparation through the radio program eventually adopted them. The innovation that most respondents created interest in was value addition. Most adopted the innovation on harvesting techniques. Membership of MicroVeg group, assistance from family members as well as depth of exposure to the program encourages the likelihood of adoption of the UIV innovations while awareness and satisfaction with the contents of the program are also important motivators of adoption. Theoretical implications: Results from the study shows that the presumed theoretical linkage between awareness and adoption of innovations may not hold in all circumstances, but a series of exposure to the message will encourage adoption. Originality: The study establishes the usefulness of the Radio as a means of propagating beneficial agricultural innovations among the rural populace especially in developing countries.

The aim of this study was to analyze and identify the contribution of the “Damergou” community radio station in the promotion and development of efficient and sustainable agriculture in the context of climate change. The methodology used was based on documentary research, the analysis of documents from the radio program schedule, field surveys of farmers. Data analysis was done using Microsoft office Excel software 2013 version. The results showed that both men and women participate in radio broadcasts with a high proportion of men (52.08 % against 25 % of women). The results of the study also show that 96.15 % of producers participate by telephone against only 3.85 % for the radio visit. In addition, programs on the conservation of cowpea with bags (93.75 %), the use of phytosanitary products (91.25%) and the production of compost (73.75 %) are the most listened to by farmers. Finally, the study showed that the contents of these broadcasts were also the most adopted by farmers. Thus, community radios are an effective way of promoting agriculture and rural development through the sharing of information and knowledge on good agricultural practices. The “Damergou” community radio in Tanout is therefore an important way in the sharing and promotion of good agricultural practices in this locality with an agro-sylvopastoral vocation.

This paper uses sample survey data to examine the reach of SIDA dans la Cité (SDLC), a popular television series on Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa. Within the intervention area where SDLC was televised, the program targeted those with an elevated risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and those with low socioeconomic status who were likely to have limited access to health information and services. The results indicate that in electrified regions, the SDLC program achieved very good reach among the elevated-risk groups and moderate to good reach among the low socioeconomic status groups. The finding that rural populations obtain AIDS information overwhelmingly from radio and television implies that televised HIV prevention information can play a crucial role in electrified rural regions.

This study presents the results of an opinion pool among the users and residents of Mamirauá and Amanã Reserves in relation to the effectiveness of the communications broadcasted through the radio show “Ligado no Mamirauá” (Tunned into Mamirauá). This research was carried out between September and October 2004 aiming to support the planning of a new structure for this radio show, based on the perception of its main listeners. “Ligado no Mamirauá” has been broadcasted every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. by Tefé Rural Radio Station for more than ten years. This research was conducted among listeners at the age of 16 or older, residents and users of these two protected areas. Semi-structured questionnaires were applied to gather opinions about what listeners consider the most relevant subjects, their evaluation of the information offered by the broadcast, their preferences of time shifts and days of the week for a new broadcasting plan. Besides these pools, data about their access to current means of diffusion and information dissemination (radio and TV), and about the conditions of the equipment used were also registered in the individual interviews. The analysis has shown that “Ligado no Mamirauá” needs to broadcast more clear subjects, related to basic local needs, such as health, education, citizenship, and to give opportunity to popular participation during the programs so to strengthen its audience, providing means to establish a participative dialogue about social and environmental development of the protected areas, yet informing more frequently the local opinion (throughout community participation in the radio program) about the work and research carried out by Mamirauá Institute towards the improvement of life quality in the local communities, and about their strengthening as social actors, responsible for the conservation of their own environment.

In the era of globalization, social media seems to be the outstanding reflection of social reality and change. Social networks have become wildly used by the growing population of young urban, rural, and non-literate demographic groups in the developing world. This qualitative shift also shows a strong ability to amplify the voice of marginalised and excluded groups. It likewise contributes in the spectacular regression of the notion of privacy among people. Thus, most users of social media including journalists find no harm in probing in a number of issues that have been deemed sacred or tabooed. Journalism ethics seem to be changing and newcomers seem to be able to introduce new normative even audacious values. This development is not only concerned with social media, it also pierced the radio realm. The present paper therefore sheds light on the radio capacity to accede realities often taken as exclusively restricted and private. Observers of the Moroccan radio landscape commonly agree that most Moroccan radio stations tend to favor social programs in comparison with, not to say to the detriment of other program types; the issue of what is now called “Confession Programs” which stand for the archetype of stations’ aura have become mostly solicited among listeners. The present study seeks to study this rising trend by unraveling the religious, psychological and sociological implications. It attempts to explore the Moroccan audience’ perceptions in relation to these programs and their impact on listeners’ behaviour. The three angles stated above find premise on a number of radio programs pretending, or at least aim to bring solution to purely psychological crises. The research design is ethnographic; it focuses on collecting data basing on respondents’ personal views and experiences aloof from any convincing or orienting acts. In this respect, the study makes use of the semi-structured interviews as the main data collection instrument. The population sample comprises 50 respondents divided into two categories namely (i) the direct contact sample and (ii) the facebook sample. The study seeks to answer two research questions: (i) Do respondents have the same perception of confession programs. (ii) What are the religious, psychological and sociological implications of their prevalence?

The publicness character of the Indonesia Republic Radio/RRI is both historical as well as legal necessity. RRI was born from the historical process as a struggle radio to seize and defend independence from colonialists. This true identity that is embodied in the spirit of public service ethos is getting stronger after the enactment of Government Regulation No. 11/2005 and 12/2005 concerning public service broadcasting and RRI public service broadcasting respectively. The duty of serving the needs and interests of the public must be the "spirit" which drives its whole operational activities of broadcasting and institutional governance. For this reason, various efforts have been made, such as improving governance and expanding the broadcast network area. To answer the demands of media digitization, the adoption of media convergence technology in the form of the launch of the RRI Play Go application has also been carried out. This has changed it from a public service broadcasting institution (PSB) to a public service media (PSM). Its public character as a public service broadcast radio must be put forward by placing the public as citizens (citizens) active participants both in the process of planning and implementing broadcast program content as well as media institutional governance. Through PSM, the interaction between media managers and citizens can be established. The process of involving citizens in the production process of media content is also easily facilitated. For this reason, their role in supervising and evaluating media management must be more substantial to ensure the public character of RRI. Based on this, this study aims to examine the form of public participation in supervising and evaluating broadcasting and media management of RRI. More specifically, what is the role of the Audience Council Forum Komunikasi Pemerhati of RRI Malang in carrying out this function.

This study examines the actual status of the transmission of folk songs in South Korea in the mid-1970s through DBS Report "Minyo-ui Gohyang (Hometown of Folk Songs)" produced and broadcast by Dong-A Broadcasting System (DBS). DBS Report "Minyo-ui Gohyang" was a radio documentary series that covered farming and fishing villages to report on folk song transmission. DBS produced and broadcast 15 episodes of DBS Report "Minyo-ui Gohyang" in 1974 and 10 episodes in 1975. Although it did not cover all regions of the country, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Gangwon-do, and Chungcheongbuk-do were included and the coverage was conducted at the village level. This program was significant in that it raised the public’s awareness of folk songs by covering and reporting in-depth on native folk songs rather than popular folk songs that were often heard through modern media, such as radio, TV, and LP at the time. DBS Report "Minyo-ui Gohyang" not only reported what kind of folk songs remained in the farming and fishing villages but also how the villagers were passing down folk songs and what these meant to them. This program covered a total of 18 villages. In 8 villages, folk songs were actively transmitted, while in the rest 10 villages, folk songs were found but not actively transmitted. The main cause of this was the changes in living conditions. In fishing villages, the opportunities to sing fishing labor songs disappeared with the decline of traditional fishing due to the development of fishing technology and changes in fishing grounds. Similarly, in rural areas, the opportunities to sing folk songs decreased due to the mechanization of farming, the use of herbicides, and the industrialization of the region. The spread of popular songs through the radio also diminished the transmission of folk songs. However, it is noteworthy that some villages underwent the same changes while the villagers worked together to preserve their folk songs. For them, folk songs were not only a means of relieving the boredom and exhaustion of labor and increasing the efficiency of work but also a source of vitality for living, art that enriched daily life, and valuable cultural heritage to be passed on to future generations.

Although much has been documented on factors affecting HIV risk behavior among rural-to-urban migrants in China, data are lacking on the impact of leisure activities. In this study, we examined the association between leisure activities and HIV risk behavior among a sample of rural-to-urban migrants from two large cities (Beijing and Nanjing) in China. Cross-sectional data were analyzed for a sample of 4,085 participants aged 18 to 30 years (40.5% females). Findings from the analysis indicated that although the migrants worked long hours, they engaged in a number of activities when they did not work, including watching television (60.2%), reading (59.1%), sleeping (55.6%), and chatting with friends and co-workers (45.0%). Multiple regression analysis indicated that reading, doing chores (females only), listening to radio programs/audio CDs (male only) were associated with reduced likelihood of HIV risk behavior while playing cards in groups, visiting entertaining installments, watching videos (including Xrated, males only), and wondering around (females only) were associated with increased likelihood of HIV risk behavior. Findings of this study suggest that constructive and individualized activities (e.g., reading, listening to radios, and doing chores) may prevent migrants from engage in HIV risk behaviors while group and entertaining activities related to drugs and sex may increase the odds for migrants to engage in HIV risk behaviors. Prevention research should consider leisure activities as both an influential factor (including time trends and gender differences) for program development and an important venue for program delivery.

Background: Within the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) programme, community engagement has been central in facilitating the acceptance of VMMC, especially in non-circumcising communities. We used the case of the development of community engagement plans for sustainability of VMMC in Zambia to illustrate diversity of stakeholders, their power, roles, and strategies in community engagement. Methods: Data were collected using document review, in-depth interviews (n=35) and focus group discussions (n=35) with community stakeholders, health workers, health centre committees, counsellors, teachers, community volunteers and parents/caregivers. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. The analysis was guided by the power and interest model. Results: Differences were noted between the rural and urban sites in terms of power/influence and interest rating of community stakeholders who could be involved in the sustainability phase of the VMMC response in Zambia. For example, in the urban setting, neighbourhood health committees (NHCs), health workers, leaders of clubs, community health workers (CHWs), radio, television and social media platforms were ranked highest. From this list, social media and television platforms were not highly ranked in rural areas. Some stakeholders had more sources of power than others. Forms or sources of power included technical expertise, local authority, financial resources, collective action (action through schools, churches, media platforms, other community spaces), and relational power. Key roles and strategies included strengthening and broadening local coordination systems, enhancing community involvement, promoting community-led monitoring and evaluation, through the use of locally recognised communication spaces and channels, facilitating ownership of VMMC, and improving local accountability processes in VMMC activities. Conclusions: By consulting with the most relevant stakeholders, and considering community needs in programme development, the VMMC programme may be able to leverage the community structures and systems to reduce long term demand generation costs for VMMC and increase the acceptability and frequency of male circumcision.

The study’s main objectives were to evaluate the contribution of television to rural development, including understanding the sorts of massages that are broadcast by television channels, attitudes toward broadcasted massages, and the effects of those massages on rural development. For the study, 300 participants were surveyed from six villages in the Munshiganj and Manikganj districts. Key informant interviews (KII) and focus group discussions (FGD) were also performed. The theoretical framework of the study was the agenda-setting theory of McCombs (1972) and the media growth theory by Mc Quail (1987). According to the study’s findings, all of the respondents own televisions and regularly watch television. According to the study, 72% of respondents believed television to be a powerful medium, and over 70% believed it to be an effective one. Another finding showed that about 74.3% of people utilized developmental messages received from TV channels, and 49.67% saw positive effects from the messages to raise their standards of living. In rural Bangladesh, as study revealed 100% of people use television, compared to 21% who use newspapers, 0% who use radio, and 53.67% who use the internet, it appears that television is the major and most dependable source of development messages. So, a decision can be made based on the study that TV is playing a significant role and have the potentiality to be used effectively in rural developments of Bangladesh. The government should provide training to television employees on rural development community engagement in program identification, delivery, follow-up, and administration of development messages successfully. The creation of high-quality television programming should be collaborative. According to the report, television can help with opportunity identification, policy options, and strategic initiatives to advance rural development policies and services.

Today, it is becoming important to achieve food security in all countries. This article aims to find sustainable and innovative ways to improve household dietary diversity score (HDDS). Analyzes were carried out based on 320 small farms in the Samarkand region using cross-sectional data in 2021. T-test method were applied to find differences in dietary diversity and product diversification of households that prepared food with digital and other innovative patterns and those that did not use them. Culinary special television programs, radio broadcasts are assisted the households’ dietary diversity index increased by 2.7 points compared to those who did not follow the program, and the production diversification index showed an increase of 0.18 points in crop diversification and 0.20 points in livestock diversification with high statistical significance. When comparing production and consumption diversification between those who used and those who did not use digital technologies, the diversification index of the crop was 0.12 and livestock diversification was 0.24 points higher. In addition, we observed that HDDS was 2.2 times higher. In particular, those who constantly used Internet resources to learn culinary practices had a crop and livestock diversification 0.03 and 0.16 points higher, HDDS two times greater than those who did not use Internet resources. Therefore, only a small number of 11 respondents mentioned that they participated in culinary courses. Our study also found that the level of farm production diversification was higher with respondents who attended cooking courses than those who did not. It was scientifically proven that HDDS was twice as high as those who did not use online menu programs, and crop and livestock diversification index was 0.15 and 0.19 points higher, respectively. Findings indicated that, proposed innovative objective solutions displayed positive results in increasing the dietary diversity of rural households.

Background and context: Nigeria, being the most populous African country has the highest cancer burden. Most of the population reside in rural areas where there are no functional health centers. Life in these communities is marked by profound ignorance, superstition and stigma, concerning cancers. There is no cancer control plan in place in the country. Aim: BWS aims at increasing awareness of the need for prevention and early detection of cancers. Strategy/Tactics: Three-pronged approach of education, screening and vaccination, with navigation where required. Monthly education and cancer screening in rural communities. Provision of a navigation system of medical follow-up for patients with a positive screening result; establishing treatment and support care for patients and recruiting and training volunteers and local advocates for cancer awareness campaigns. Program/Policy process: Monthly education/enlightenment activities in various rural communities in southeast Nigeria. Dissemination of information on screening activities is done via church and other community groups; town criers, WhatsApp, radio and banners at strategic locations. Outcomes: A total of 1990 participants (1388 females and 602 males) were screened from January 2016 to December 2017. 1342 women had CBE, 96 were referred for mammography. 105 out 1041 females who had VIA with colposcopy were positive and 26 of them had cryotherapy. 426 girls and young women (9-26 years) received HPV vaccination. 12 out of 204 men who had PSA tests were positive and referred to urologists. Since the launch of project Rid Nigeria of Late Cancer Detection in 2016, BWS has acquired a physical infrastructure for daily screening and continued her monthly rural screening services. What was learned: Women need to take permission from their husbands to even get screened, therefore involvement of traditional rulers, local government chairmen, opinion molders, leaders of faith-based organizations, and local cancer advocates from the community, is helping to increase awareness and reduce stigmatization. Taking the screening to the community is helping combat “late presentation syndrome”. However, financing rural awareness and screening is quite a challenge without financial support.

Abstract Introduction There is increasing awareness of the importance of sleep for overall health and wellness in children. However, many children are still not getting the recommended hours of sleep necessary for optimal school functioning. The purpose of this project is to describe a school-based health education program (TigerCHAT) and identify common barriers to sleep in 10-11 year old students. Methods TigerCHAT is a school-based health education program for children K-6th grades. It focuses on 45-minute sessions addressing various health topics, including sleep. Data are collected after parental consent approved. It was implemented in a rural elementary school in Alabama in the fall of 2018. Eighty-two nursing students over 10 weeks led small groups of students in brief educational modules, including one on sleep, during their scheduled gym period. Before education began, 5th and 6th grade students (10-11 years old) filled out a 22 question “What Keeps Me From Sleeping Well” Questionnaire modified for children from the Sleep Environment Inventory that asked students to circle yes/no/NA. Results Frequencies and percentages were run on the data to determine common reasons for disrupted sleep. Children ages 10-11 years in 5th and 6th grade (n=363, 47% female, 53% male, 45.3% Black, 50.8% White, 0.4% Hispanic, 1.5% Asian or Pacific Islander, 68% classified as economically disadvantaged) in a rural elementary school filled out questionnaires. The most frequently cited reasons for not sleeping well included: Noise inside the house (55%, n=198); Room too hot or cold (50%, n=181); Phone calls or text messages during the night (49%, n=176); Needed to go to the bathroom (49%, n=177); The TV, radio, or computer was on (44%, n=160); and Worried about my family (41%, n=149). Conclusion Students in this sample overwhelmingly endorsed environmental disrupters as reasons for not sleeping well (temperature of room, presence of noise, phone/technology in room), rather than other stressors on the questionnaire (worry about grades, worry about friends) or physical factors (stomach ache). Environmental factors such as the use of phones and social media should be examined further in this population, as it may be a significant, and potentially modifiable, reason for poor sleep in school age children. Modern renewable energy is an important tool to achieve socio-economic transformation, particularly in rural areas of developing countries like Ethiopia. However, most people do not access modern energy and thus providing it is one of the daunting tasks that the government has faced. Knowing energy choice of households is one of the important factors to bring energy transition. However, limited studies are undertaken in the Country on this area. Thus, this paper tried to address the gap by investigating factors affecting households lighting energy choice by taking sample of 442 households in Mida Oromo and Wonisho Districts of Ethiopia. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for analyzing the data. The result shows that households consume a range of traditional, transitional and modern lighting energy sources available in their areas. Wealthy households prefer lighting energy sources that are clean and relatively expensive including, grid electricity and solar energy unlike households in lower income category who opt to cheap and easily available energy sources. The study further highlighted that income is not the only factor affecting household energy transitions. Family size, access to market and road infrastructure, asset of the household and the district of the households, mobile and radio ownership and education attainment of the head or family members are found to be an important determinants affecting energy transition of rural households. The study concluded that any program that aim to provide modern lighting energy sources need to consider all these diverse factors and local contexts.

Background In Ethiopia, recent evidence revealed that over a quarter (27%) of households (HHs) defecated openly in bush or fields, which play a central role as the source of many water-borne infectious diseases, including cholera. Ethiopia is not on the best track to achieve the SDG of being open-defecation-free by 2030. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the spatial variation and geographical inequalities of open defecation (OD) among HHs in Ethiopia. Methods This was a country-wide community-based cross-sectional study among a weighted sample of 8663 HHs in Ethiopia. The global spatial autocorrelation was explored using the global Moran’s-I, and the local spatial autocorrelation was presented by Anselin Local Moran’s-I to evaluate the spatial patterns of OD practice in Ethiopia. Hot spot and cold spot areas of OD were detected using ArcGIS 10.8. The most likely high and low rates of clusters with OD were explored using SaTScan 10.1. Geographical weighted regression analysis (GWR) was fitted to explore the geographically varying coefficients of factors associated with OD. Results The prevalence of OD in Ethiopia was 27.10% (95% CI: 22.85–31.79). It was clustered across enumeration areas (Global Moran’s I = 0.45, Z-score = 9.88, P-value ≤ 0.001). Anselin Local Moran’s I analysis showed that there was high-high clustering of OD at Tigray, Afar, Northern Amhara, Somali, and Gambela regions, while low-low clustering of OD was observed at Addis Ababa, Dire-Dawa, Harari, SNNPR, and Southwest Oromia. Hotspot areas of OD were detected in the Tigray, Afar, eastern Amhara, Gambela, and Somali regions. Tigray, Afar, northern Amhara, eastern Oromia, and Somali regions were explored as having high rates of OD. The GWR model explained 75.20% of the geographical variation of OD among HHs in Ethiopia. It revealed that as the coefficients of being rural residents, female HH heads, having no educational attainment, having no radio, and being the poorest HHs increased, the prevalence of OD also increased. Conclusion The prevalence of OD in Ethiopia was higher than the pooled prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. Tigray, Afar, northern Amhara, eastern Oromia, and Somali regions had high rates of OD. Rural residents, being female HH heads, HHs with no educational attainment, HHs with no radio, and the poorest HHs were spatially varying determinants that affected OD. Therefore, the government of Ethiopia and stakeholders need to design interventions in hot spots and high-risk clusters. The program managers should plan interventions and strategies like encouraging health extension programs, which aid in facilitating basic sanitation facilities in rural areas and the poorest HHs, including female HHs, as well as community mobilization with awareness creation, especially for those who are uneducated and who do not have radios.

Issue: Rural-dwelling elderly have been shown to suffer from health disparities when compared to the general population. Research involving these individuals is important, and to have meaningful results, sample sizes must be adequate. Recruiting and retaining these individuals pose significant challenges. Context: Nurse researchers in the rural northwestern United States conducted a 4-part educational intervention aimed at increasing general and complementary and alternative health care literacy of older rural dwellers. Significant challenges were faced in both recruiting and retaining participants over the 6-month study period. Despite careful planning and community selection, the team had to double the number of communities in which they carried out the project to meet recruitment goals. Retention was also a challenge. Of 127 participants initially enrolled in the study, only 52 remained to the end. Lessons Learned: Challenges of recruiting and retaining are complex and compounded when the target population is rural, older and the study is longitudinal. Recruitment challenges included reaching older adults, offering a compelling program, and offering it in an acceptable format at a convenient time and place. A variety of outreach activities were conducted including in-person presentations, advertising or public interest stories in local newspapers or radio stations, and flyers on bulletin boards in restaurants, clinics, churches, community centers, and libraries. A project champion, an individual well known and connected within the community and committed to the success of the proposed study, is a major asset. Retention strategies included developing relationships with the participants and maintaining contact with them over the course of the study through such mechanisms as appointment cards, e-mail or regular mail, telephone reminders, and thank you cards. Oversampling was important as factors beyond the control of the researcher occurred; for example, illness, death, family crises, unexpected relocations, and weather events that prevented travel to scheduled research events. During the early hours of 2020, COVID -19 terrorized the world by forcing many countries to close their borders and restrict internal movement by imposing a state of national emergency which was geared toward lockdowns for months in some areas for years. The Gambia was not an exception to this trajectory and one of the sectors heavily stroked by this lockdown was education. As a result, “the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE)” designed a Response framework to curb learning loss across the country. This study aimed to analyse the policy and describe the implication it has on inclusive education. The qualitative research method was used imploring the interpretive approach in the analysis. Despite the nobility and ambitiousness of the policy, the findings from the analysis revealed that the policy had a serious blind spot in the area of inclusion because many children are left out because of their inability to access the mediums where lessons are delivered. Many households in rural Gambia did not have a stable electricity supply or even own a television or radio set, therefore it was impossible for children in these communities to benefit from the program. In addition, children with special needs are also excluded particularly does who are visually or hearing impaired.

The adoption of smart agricultural technology in rural areas is still limited in terms of network infrastructure supported. As a result, farmers continue to practice traditional farming that mainly focuses on human labor and requires experience in planning the production of agricultural products in unstable weather conditions, which makes the farmers highly risky. Currently, long range (LoRa) technology is a smart agriculture support tool that will enable the Internet of Things devices to a large number of end nodes distributed over a wide geographical area. They could access cloud computing from a long distance, kilometers, for processing via long range wide area network (LoRaWAN) communication protocol. When choosing a multiple gateway location for LoRaWAN networks, big networks must consider the spatial distribution of clients, radio signal propagation, and the cap on the number of devices served access. In this study, a mathematical model is developed to optimize coverage. The LINGO modeling program, an exact software method, was used to test the model. The findings indicated that the best six gateways at the optimal LoRaWAN gateway location. The gateways can provide signal coverage for all end nodes and can manage the capacity of the LoRaWAN gateway to support the proper number of end nodes.

The objective of the study is to examine the extent to which public awareness on County bursary fund allocation has influenced the retention of needy students in secondary school. The study employed survey design in the collection of data. A study sample of 133 respondents was engaged in from a total population of 6,093 obtained from a stratified random sampling technique. The questionnaire was the method of data collection used to gather the Primary data. The questionnaires were coded and edited for completeness and consistency. They were further processed by utilising statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) program. The analysis procedure included inferential examination and descriptive statistics. The descriptive analysis method provided the sample data in quantitative form, which ended in producing mean and standard deviation. The study established the relationship between dependent and independent variables by conducting regression analysis, which found out that the P-values of awareness of county bursary fund, was 0.001, which is less than 0.05 significance level; this implies that variable is significant. The study concludes that communication through the public participation forum, posters, radio social media was detailed enough to make the application and submission easy for the applicants. The study recommends that more awareness campaign should be enhanced using varies forms of communication. Still, posters and notices should be prioritised as they scored the highest value of 43.4 % as compared to other communication media. The researcher also concluded that the fund retained needy students in secondary school with 61.1% of the interviewed school principals, 65.9% of the bursary applicants and 80% of the bursary committee secretaries agreeing.

Abstract Respite care is an important service to address caregivers' stress and fatigue when caring for a person with dementia (PWD). YouthCare is a non-medical, at-home, intergenerational respite care program that partners trained student volunteers with PWDs. The Family Caregiver Survey was created and distributed to caregivers of PWDs in Los Angeles to better understand interactions with the community and its caregiver services. The survey assesses caregivers’ demographics, daily activities, mental health, and the type of respite support needed. The survey findings (n=47) show that 53.2% of caregivers are 54 and older and 83% females. 40.4% of the caregivers listened to the radio primarily in the morning while 61.7% watched television in the afternoon to evening time. For transportation of PWDs to and from destinations, 78.3% of caregivers reported using their own vehicles. In regards to their mental health, 61.7% of the caregivers stated that they felt tired and unmotivated to complete daily activities. When asked why they sought respite services, 40% stated that they were overwhelmed by the responsibilities in addition to their own work. The groups that primarily support caregivers are family and professional respite services. Findings indicate that caregivers are most likely to trust resource recommendations from family and friends. Similar surveys should be administered in other cities and in rural locations to improve the generalizability of our findings.

The first case of coronavirus infection was recorded in 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus is easily transmitted by droplets, which soon leads to a pandemic. The first case in our country was recorded in March 2020. The aim of this paper is to describe the implementation of the preventive program (health-educational work) in the Dental Service of the Valjevo Health Center, in the newly created and so far unknown circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic. The health and educational work play a key role in prevention when it comes to the work of dentists with children of preschool, school, and high school age, as well as with pregnant women and mothers. Through Powerpoint presentations, in pictures and words, dentists tried to pass on their knowledge about the importance of proper nutrition and oral and dental hygiene to preschool patients. Through platforms designed for online teaching, students of all grades of primary schools in urban and rural areas, as well as high school students, are provided with all the important information related to the preservation and improvement of oral health. Through the School of Parenthood, and in cooperation with the Patronage Service of the Valjevo Health Center, educational work with pregnant women and mothers-in-law was conducted. The Week of Oral and Dental Health was marked by the guest appearance of the head of the service on local television, on the show "Serbia Today" and on the "Morning Program" of the Radio Television of Serbia. Thanks to the exceptional cooperation of the Dental Service with the management of the Valjevo Health Center, the Patronage Service, and their cooperation with the preschool, primary and secondary schools, the planned preventive program for 2020 was implemented. The program was supported by school principals, teaching organizers, and educators from the preschool institution, who highly rated our work. A comprehensive approach to the control of dental disease in children and adolescents is extremely important for laying a solid foundation for good oral health. Even in the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to carry out health-educational work whose development is to develop healthy living habits and preserve oral health.

Background: Currently, syphilis and gonorrhoea among women is a topic great concernin Bangladesh. To date, little is known in the existing literature regarding its prevalence, and the current level of syphilis and gonorrhoea awareness among women with regard to prevention is inadequate. This research aims to identify factors associated with awareness of syphilis and gonorrhoea among women in Bangladesh. Methods: Data were collected from women by the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2011 as a cross-sectional study. The seven divisions surveyed were Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna and Sylhet. The number of women in the seven divisions totalled 17,842. The chi-squared test and a logistic regression model were used to determine the social-demographic factors associated with awareness about syphilis and gonorrhoea among women in Bangladesh. Results: The rate of awareness about syphilis and gonorrhoea among women in Bangladesh was 13.3% and 15.7%, respectively. The chi-squared test and logistic analysis demonstrated that there is a significant association between the awareness of syphilis and gonorrhoea with the respondents’ age, location of the respondents’ house, educational level of the respondent, socioeconomic status, geographic region, and respondents that listened to the radio and watched TV. Conclusions: There is an essential need to expand the learning and teaching program in Bangladesh regarding syphilis and gonorrhoea, mainly among younger women (<25 years) in all topographical and rural areas. Advertising drives and mass broadcasting programs can be used to increase knowledge within societies, particularly among women. In addition, the low awareness of syphilis and gonorrhoea indicates that prevention interventions are required among women.
