The paper deals with the problem of abuse and violence against minors, among which the authors distinguish a special category: orphans and children left without parental care. Approaches to the definition and forms of violence and ill-treatment of minors are described. The psychological causes and consequences of violence and ill-treatment are analyzed. Technologies for providing psychological assistance to child victims of violence and abuse are offered. A significant part of the work is devoted to the consideration of the features of interdepartmental interaction on prevention and timely detection of signs and consequences of abuse and violence against children. The result of such an analysis was the development of a model regulation describing the procedural and legal issues of coordinating such interaction between specialists from different departments in order to protect the interests of minors. The work is addressed to psychologists, teachers, specialists of organizations for children.

Much progress has been made in understanding, measuring, and managing quality of life and psychological well-being in individuals with ALS, but there are gaps. Anxiety and depression have been carefully explored in the ALS literature, but coping, resilience, sexuality, intimacy, and end-of-life concerns require more attention. Psychological interventions have been under-explored. Further research on mindfulness, hypnosis, and on complementary and alternative medicines is needed, with particular attention to early evidence that psychological interventions may lead to physical as well as psychological benefits. Attention to the psychological consequences of cognitive dysfunction in ALS would greatly benefits patients and caregivers. The impact of technology needs further study. Rapid advances in genetics, brain-computer interfaces, and new treatments, communicated virtually instantaneously via the internet, will inevitably contrast with the slower pace of implementation, resulting in surges of hope and disappointment. Optimal care is holistic, incorporating both physical and psychological assessment and management.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a devastating condition with progressive loss of movement, speech, and respiratory function, and no available cure. Following the development of clinical symptoms and after receiving a diagnosis, patients may develop psychological morbidity, such as depression, anxiety, and hopelessness. However, many patients adjust successfully in the course of the disease and maintain good psychological well-being, so that a decline in psychological well-being does not necessarily accompany loss of physical function. There are several major determinants of good psychological adjustment to chronic and terminal disease—intrinsic factors such as coping strategies and internal locus of control, and extrinsic factors such as high (perceived and actual) social support by families and multidisciplinary professional teams. Providing care with a holistic view of the patient is probably the most effective approach to supporting patients’ psychosocial adjustment to the disease and minimizing depression, anxiety, and hopelessness.

As yet, studies on prevention of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or depression are in their infancy. This chapter discusses multimodal rehabilitation strategies that can improve psychological recovery which are beginning to be established. Recognizing those patients needing further help and having a structured pathway for rehabilitation is the first step toward returning patients to as normal a life as possible after critical illness. Providing intensive care unit (ICU) diaries for as many patients as possible is a cost-effective way of helping patients come to terms with their ICU experience. Also discussed in the chapter are psychological therapies, which may be reserved for those survivors of critical illness who are experiencing more severe effects from critical illness and intensive care.

Much of the impact of genes on mood disorders likely depends on interactions between genes and the environment. Recent studies demonstrating an interaction between specific genes and life stressful events (early and/or adult) in the modulation of several mood disorders (e.g., serotonin transporter and brain-derived neurotrophic factor genes) have compelled researchers to incorporate information about adverse environmental experiences into the study of genetic risk factors; these same gene-by-environment (G×E) interactions have been identified in mouse models. Notably, G×E not yet described in humans (e.g., serotonin 1A receptor gene) have been uncovered, providing helpful indications to discover similar interactions in humans. Accurate knowledge of the modality of expression of gene-by-stress interaction may help design prevention protocols aimed at identifying susceptibility to mood disorders on the basis of genetic predisposition and exposure to environmental stressful conditions, thus providing patients with appropriate pharmacological and psychological support.

This chapter draws on one of the new cognitive and evolutionary psychological theories of religion, religious attachment theory, to explain the emergence of the Axial Age religions of the late first millennium bce. These religions—Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism—introduced new kinds of gods into world history—gods that were transcendent and capable of providing release from suffering. Religious attachment theory views religion as providing “substitute attachment figures” under circumstances in which people’s social attachments have been severely disrupted. The basic argument of the chapter is that the new Axial Age gods were responses to heightened levels of anxiety and ontological insecurity that accompanied massive increases in warfare and urbanization in the period between approximately 600 bce and 1 ce. The anthropomorphic pagan gods of the ancient empires had become inadequate in the face of the new religious needs that people began to experience, and thus they came to be replaced.

Mental illness is an enormous burden worldwide, as reflected in the number of individuals who suffer from a mental disorder, the personal pain and suffering they and their families experience, the exorbitant costs of providing but also of failing to provide services, and the spillover of mental health problems into physical health (e.g., many physical maladies and earlier-than-expected deaths associated with mental illness) and functioning in everyday life (e.g., in social relations, employment, happiness, and quality of life). We have many interventions that can help, but they are not brought to the many people in need of psychological services. There are many novel models of delivering these interventions that could be scaled to reach people in need and surmount the many barriers to providing and receiving services. Promising models of delivery are drawn from physical health care, public health, business, social policy, and other disciplines and can serve to illustrate what can be done now. This book conveys new ways of delivering treatment as well as new ways of developing and investigating treatments so that they are much more likely to reach people in need. The overall goal is, or ought to be, reducing the burdens of mental illness. This book conveys novel ways of providing treatment if we adopt that goal more explicitly and draw on the best science available to achieve that.

The chapter defines social identity threat as the situationally triggered concern that one is at risk of being stigmatized and provides a conceptual model of its antecedents and consequences. This chapter explores the role of scientifically-grounded interviewing approaches in criminal investigations and prosecution. It develops a “case construction” perspective, in which the effectiveness of interviewing techniques can be evaluated based on their usefulness for accurately distinguishing between innocent and guilty suspects and for providing evidence that is useful for prosecuting a guilty defendant. The chapter reviews the psychological literature of deception detection, interviewing, and interrogation, viewed through the lens of case construction. Special focus is given to the Strategic Use of Evidence technique, an empirically supported and theoretically based interviewing technique that has shown promise for is use in constructing a case.

Chapter 11 concerns the contrast effects on knowledge ascriptions. It begins by articulating the epistemic focal bias account according to which the contrast effects amount to false positives. On this basis, it is argued that the epistemic focal bias account fulfills an important desideratum of providing a unified account of the contrast effect and salient alternatives effects. The empirical case for the focal bias account is augmented with a number of experimental results. Moreover, it is related to further psychological considerations and the philosophical anti-contrastivist arguments from Chapter 4. Finally, the account is connected to some pragmatic considerations that pertain to presupposition accommodation. In sum, Chapter 11 provides an account of the puzzling patterns of knowledge ascriptions constituted by contrast effects.

Bipolar disorder (BD) in children has received considerable research and clinical attention in the last two decades and remains a challenging disorder to diagnose and treat. This chapter begins by describing the diagnoses included under the bipolar and related disorders section of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and providing guidance regarding developmental differences in symptom presentations and differential diagnosis. It then provides a brief overview of risk factors for bipolar disorder, including genetic, neurobiological, and psychological factors. Assessment tools designed to aide clinicians in diagnosing pediatric bipolar disorder are reviewed, as are empirically validated psychopharmacological and psychosocial treatments. A case example highlights the use of these tools and treatment approaches; finally, directions for future research are discussed.

The UP for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders addresses neuroticism by targeting the aversive, avoidant reactions to emotions that, while providing relief in the short term, increase the likelihood of future negative emotions and maintains disorder symptoms. The strategies included in this treatment are largely based on common principles found in existing empirically supported psychological treatments—namely, fostering mindful emotion awareness, reevaluating automatic cognitive appraisals, changing action tendencies associated with the disordered emotions, and utilizing emotion exposure procedures. The focus of these core skills has been adjusted to specifically address core negative responses to emotional experiences.

This chapter comprises a focused review of the best available evidence for psychological and pharmacological treatments of choice for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and other specified and unspecified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED and UFED), discusses the role of primary care and online therapies, and presents treatment algorithms. In AN, although there is consensus on the need for specialist care that includes nutritional rehabilitation in addition to psychological therapy, no single approach has yet been found to offer a distinct advantage. In contrast, manualized cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for BN has attained “first-line” treatment status with a stronger evidence base than other psychotherapies. Similarly, CBT has a good evidence base in treatment of BED and for BN, and BED has been successfully adapted into less intensive and non-specialist forms. Behavioral and pharmacological weight loss management in treatment of co-morbid obesity/overweight and BED may be helpful in the short term, but long-term maintenance of effects is unclear. Primary care practitioners are in a key role, both with regard to providing care and with coordination and initiation of specialist care. There is an emerging evidence base for online therapies in BN and BED where access to care is delayed or problematic.

Focusing on the human necessity of habilitation leads to a more inclusive and adequate account of the circumstances of justice. Such an account involves paying persistent attention to similarities and differences in the physical and psychological abilities of actual human agents. That in turn leads to equally persistent attention to the basic good health (or lack of it) in such agents, and to their inabilities (disabilities) and abilities. Such attention to basic good health then yields a disability-friendly starting point for the construction of normative theories of basic justice generally. It does this by providing a constant undercurrent of attention to the crucial problems of human habilitation and rehabilitation that any plausible normative theory of justice must address. Those problems of justice, moreover, are framed as part of the inescapable project of working around human disabilities, or through them, toward situations in which their salience for basic justice is minimized.

In many countries, nurse specialists with advanced training in the management of ostomies, wounds, or incontinence are available as consultants or as members of a specialist palliative care team. These professionals can improve health care and quality of life for selected patients across venues of care that include hospital, home, long-term care, hospice, and specialized settings. If a stoma nurse specialist is available, he or she may have a key role in directing decision-making and care management related to these problems, evaluating and controlling symptoms that cause patients and families suffering, and providing psychosocial and spiritual support.

Adolescence is a time of change marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. When a teenager is ill and requiring hospitalization many of the constructs upon which individual identity rests such as contact with peers, and social belonging, can become compromised. Music therapy offers a way to address the personal and psychological stress that can result from hospitalization. In this chapter the authors highlight conditions in medicine that are common to teens. Music psychotherapy approaches are described that promote expression in individual and group modalities, and can also provide avenues for self-reflection related to the disease process, such as the receiving of a new diagnosis, or in cases where traumatic injury has occurred. The role of the music therapist in working with the medical team, the patient, and the patient’s family is presented with reference to the detailed knowledge and experience of the authors in providing music psychotherapy to adolescents.

Quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) is the transformation of the EEG by spectral analysis in which the amount of electrical activity at a particular frequency is determined and compared against a normative data base. EEG findings are specific for different psychiatric problems and help reveal brain abnormalities associated with psychological symptoms. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a system of delivering multiple pulses within a short time period that induce changes that outlast the stimulation period. Operant conditioning involves providing a reward to increase the probability of a certain behavior. Neurofeedback involves recording, analyzing, and presenting results of qEEG analyses in near real-time to patients in order to promote changes in brain electrical activity. This chapter reviews how neuromodulation works both clinically and from a neurophysiological perspective. This chapter also reviews current clinical data on the use of neuromodulation approaches for improving mental health and well-being.

The needs of increasingly diverse deaf learners in special schools and mainstream programs pose a challenge to researchers and practitioners, especially when it comes to assessment. There has been progress in developing standardized psychometric tests that are more appropriate for deaf children, for example in the form of sign language assessments. However, these tests continue to have certain limitations: they provide information about a child’s learning outcome but not the learning process, and children have a limited opportunity to contribute to the assessment process. This chapter highlights the potential of using dynamic assessment (DA), an interactive approach to psychological assessment that embeds intervention within the assessment procedure, with deaf learners. After providing background on language assessment of deaf learners and an introduction to the concept behind DA, the author discusses the relevant research and examines ways for teachers to make DA meaningful in the classroom.

Here is a central issue in Hume scholarship: What is the relationship between Hume’s early Treatise of Human Nature and his later Enquiry concerning Human Understanding? Is the Enquiry a mere simplified restatement of the contents of the Treatise, or do the two substantially differ? Here is another critical issue in Hume scholarship: What is the relationship between Hume’s scepticism and his naturalism? How can we reconcile Hume’s extreme brand of scepticism with his positive ambitions of providing an account of human nature? Hume’s Epistemological Evolution argues that these two issues are intimately related. In particular, this book argues that Hume’s Enquiry indeed differs from the Treatise, precisely because he changes his response to scepticism between the two works. Because the Treatise has as its primary focus the psychological naturalistic project, its treatment of epistemological issues arises unsystematically from the psychological investigation. Consequently, Hume finds himself forced into an unsatisfactory response to scepticism founded on the Title Principle . This response is, however, deeply problematic, as Hume himself seems to recognise. In contrast to the Treatise, the Enquiry emphasises the epistemological aspects of Hume’s project, and offers a radically different and more sophisticated epistemology. This framework addresses the weaknesses of the earlier one, and also constitutes a ‘compleat answer’ to two of his most prominent critics, Thomas Reid and James Beattie. Hume’s epistemology thus undergoes an evolution between these two works.

The period leading to death is characterized by increasing prevalence and intensity of physical, psychological, existential, and social concerns, and it is often a challenging time for patients, their families, and health-care providers. This chapter specifically addresses the most prevalent symptoms and concerns encountered when managing the actively dying patient. Symptoms affecting dying patients’ comfort, including pain, dyspnoea, delirium, terminal secretions, and refractory symptoms and suffering require different clinical management as death approaches. Other topics included are recognizing the dying phase; communication with and preparation of patient, family, and staff; anticipating dying-advanced care planning and approach to resuscitation; addressing psychosocial and existential concerns; and approach to difficult end-of-life scenarios. This chapter aims to provide the health-care practitioner with a good overview and approach to the whole-person care needs of the dying patient and their family and carers to enable health practitioners to feel comfortable in providing this important care with confidence.

In this chapter, a decolonizing perspective is used to show how urban Indian youth identities across the different classes unsettle long-held beliefs about Eurocentric understandings of youth culture, identity, and subjectivities. It also shows how narrative psychology can be useful in providing a counterpoint to the depoliticized, individualistic, and universal views of culture. A vision of psychology is articulated that locates the psychological understanding of identity, cultural difference, power, and practices in neoliberal transnational contexts and reimagines the discipline of psychology in which concepts of narrative and indigenous psychology, social justice, and equity are central. It is argued that psychology has not developed a meaningful theoretical vocabulary or a willingness to explore questions of social justice that are wrapped around qualitative methods and community-based practices because these are usually conducted in faraway places with marginalized populations that have no history or recognition in American psychology or in the United States.

Although careers are an important part of people’s lives, career constructs have not always been well represented in the work–family (WF) literature. Accordingly, this chapter is written as a resource for WF scholars by providing a concise review of the rich career literature dating back over 100 years to show how conceptualizations of careers have evolved over time, with examples of key psychological and sociological theories that have enriched our understanding of careers. We also draw on the WF literature to illustrate how early career theories and concepts are still being applied to WF issues. We then focus on contemporary career theories and conceptualizations that reflect today’s turbulent work environment, and thus differ from traditional perspectives. In addition, we review the recent WF literature to examine how well these contemporary views of careers are represented, with examples of WF literature that illustrate the insights they offer. The chapter concludes with suggestions for further integration of ideas and constructs from the career literature in future WF research.
