Objective. This research aims at defining the principles of constructing effective narratives with the use of the strategic communication capabilities and the media. Materials and Methods. Publications in modern English and Ukrainian mass-media have been analyzed using methods and techniques of discourse analysis, content- and intent-analysis with elements of pragmatic and narrative analysis. The author’s methodology included the following: to identify the author’s intention and motives, the main topoi and points of the narrative focalization, to define hidden beliefs, social and psychological basis for the recipient’s perception of the narrative, to outline effective strategies for the narrative construction and dissemination in the media. Results. In general, modern media have the capacity of constructing the desired frames in the audience’s consciousness by creating a mental model of the situation, on which the consumer of the information starts to rely. Decision-making now is reliant on the media consciousness, a virtual world imposed by the media and constructed with the help of relevant narratives. Modern strategic narratives usually have the external focalization which gets more credibility when supported and presented by the focalization points of celebrities and experts. Competing narratives, as well as the plurality of possible interpretations of events, are destroyed with the help of the media, which begin to broadcast one interpretation of the event that matches the narrative, by this making it the truth. Simultaneous use of several different media intensifies the influence and support the narrative. Repeating information changes its status and makes it not just a fact, but general knowledge. Any narrative is not only a sequential story of the selected events, but also persuasion in its nature. Persuasion is enhanced when narratives resonate with the audience's value system. Conclusions. As a strategic communication tool, an effective narrative is constructed with regard to all the aspects of communication, psycholinguistic and social aspects being especially important. Further insights into the problem of shaping narratives will allow outlining best practices and their elements to develop image-forming narratives.

Abstract The growing body of research on Chinese as an international (or “global”) language examines linguistic, psycholinguistic, social-psychological, and orthographic aspects of acquisition primarily. There has been relatively little critical discussion or analysis of the larger social context and discourses in which Chinese language education is embedded. However, recently sociocultural, discursive, and critical aspects of the teaching, learning, and use of Chinese as an additional language have begun to receive more attention. This study analyzes circulating discourses, ideologies, and tropes related to Chinese in news media, as one means by which information and perspectives are spread by media and by which public attitudes and policy decisions are (recursively) shaped or reproduced. To this end, a large sample of English-medium news reports of Chinese language education in three Anglophone countries was created and analyzed for the years 2004 to 2012. The findings revealed that reports dealing with Chinese education tended to fall into one of several major tropes, which we have roughly classified as “hope,” “hype,” and “fear,” distinctions that parallel existing models of cyclical or amplified media coverage of innovations or otherwise newsworthy events. The sociopolitically and socioeconomically motivated occurrence of these tropes in the media, combined with the novelty of the Chinese language itself, a historically less frequently taught language in comparison with various European languages, constituted a consistent and recurring narrative. Thus, the shifting representations of Chinese learning in the media tended to appear as corollaries or “side stories” servicing the needs of larger geopolitical events and perceived or desired changes in public sentiment. These trends and their significance are illustrated and discussed in relation to Global Chinese.

ABSTRACTAssessments of the narrative abilities of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease should consider the interactions that generate the narratives. By analyzing the discourse of an AD patient in interaction with two different interlocutors, namely her husband and the author, this study calls attention to ways in which one interaction facilitates narratives and the other does not. Previous psycholinguistic research, largely focusing on the resultant narrative, has understood the AD patient's deteriorating narrative skills as a result of the progressively debilitating nature of the disease. This is undoubtedly true, but extensive and meaningful talk is nevertheless possible, partially grounded in and constructed through social interaction. The article is aimed at studying psycholinguistic issues regarding the interpretation variability and linguocultural accommodation of conceptual basis representing the determinants of the Chinese military and political discourse by the Ukrainians. The topicality is stipulated by great interest of the scientists in the fields of psycholinguistics, linguistic culturology, translation studies as to the semantic content within the view of the world displayed by ethnic groups from The Orient. The determinants of the Chinese military and political discourse (discourse, concept, concept sphere, linguistic component, extra-linguistic component) are specified in the article. The Chinese-language military-political discourse is understood as a totality of verbalized oral and written texts created in the context of the politics-oriented communication; ideographic and symbolic embodiment of the national concept sphere, which is governed by the national and culture-centric tactical and strategic vectors of the conflict-free interaction performed by communicants in the spheres of politics, economy, military-industry, international relations. The linguistic phenomena enable the Chinese military and political discourse to be actualized as well as the means of their reproduction in the Ukrainian language [replication (equivalent translation), transliteration, transcoding, descriptive translation, commentary; the communication-equal translation strategy; the redirection strategy where cultural and linguistic adaptations are applied]. The prospects of our further research are seen in the study of tactical and strategic vectors which may determine the peculiarities of reproducing the syntactic component of the discourse under study into the Ukrainian language.

The article focuses on psycholinguistic aspects of the discourse “Radiotelephony of civil aviation” (RTF). The relevance of the research is related to the key role that this discourse plays in ensuring flight safety. Psycholinguistic analysis of radiotelephony allowed us to prove its discursive nature based on procedural, interactive, and real-time attributes. The RTF discourse is defined as a closed, narrow-professional, institutional and dynamic type. This discourse is intentional and focused on safe operation of flight; conventional, limited by a set of stereotyped phrases enshrined in regulatory documents and obligatory for radiotelephony participants’ use, by strict regulation of radiotelephony procedures at all stages of flight. We determined that RTF discourse users as representatives of a certain professional space could realize themselves in a limited set of communicative roles. Communicative process “pilot – air traffic controller” is based on the “circular model”, since one-way communication in this type of discourse is not provided for. The “status-role” relations of RTF participants are primarily realized by means of the binary opposition “the initiator of the message” – “the executor / non-executor of the requested action”. Main speech functions realized in RTF discourse are informative and regulatory. RTF discourse is a “language code”, since information transmitted in it is understandable only to the actors of aviation community. Non-compliance with norms of this language code use, as well as a number of psycho-linguistic, psycho-physiological, and extra-linguistic factors lead to disruption of information coding / decoding processes, cause communicative failures, become concomitant factors of aviation accidents. Analysis of psycholinguistic features of RTF discourse, nature and causes of RTF communication failures, and psycho-physiological features of pilot in-flight activity (information overloading, high tempo of work due to time limits, work in stressful conditions) allowed us to determine types of exercises facilitating the process of future pilots training to cope with real difficulties of professional communication in RTF discourse.

The paper presents an overview of the main tendencies in modern discourse studies in German-speaking circles, further referring to the problem of communicative self-presentation strategies used by the participants in virtual conflict discourse and their usage in certain conflict situations. The linguistic, sociological and psychological aspects of conflict communication play an important role in the research of discourse in German-language discourse studies. The research groups such as the Vienna circle and the Duisburg school of discourse analysis integrated theories on conflict discourse, inter alia the hegemony theory developed by E. Laclau and Ch. Mouffe or the theory of conflict discourse of J. Habermas into their research, focusing mainly on the problem of racism and right extremist discourse in the German-speaking public sphere. The modern research includes also sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of racist discourse research. Scientific works published in the last ten years focus mainly on problems of hidden racism within public and social institutions and racist discourse within teenager groups. The study of different sociological and psychological factors of communicative behavior are aimed at reconstructing social crises and forecast of future tendencies in order to avoid further cases of discrimination in society. With the growing importance of media as source of knowledge and instrument of influence, virtual communication becomes an integral part of discourse formation and articulation. On the one hand, such special features of the Internet, as spontaneity of communication, anonymity of the users, as well as the unlimited number of potential participants, provide a free choice of instruments of self-presentation. On the other hand, however, they involve certain limitations of the communication process itself: such features as social status, social or physical power can no longer be source of influence on the opponent. Thus, participants of conflict discourse have to defend their own and their social group's positive image by choosing suitable communicative strategies of self-presentation and presentation of the opponent. Positive self-presentation in conflict discourse includes a strong division of communicative space into oppositional categories, such as ME (US)-YOU (THEY), GOOD-BAD or RIGHT-WRONG, where the ME (US) group is credited with positive qualities such as good, intelligent, experienced, rightful etc, whereas such negative qualities, as bad, stupid, inexperienced, wrong are attributed to the opponent group. The analysis of such self-presentation strategies and categorization processes allows making conclusions about the mental aspects of discourse practices in separate social and ethnocultural groups basing on psycholinguistic features of intercultural and interpersonal conflict discourse.

Psycholinguistic peculiarities of verbal aggression in English political discourse. The article examines aspects of speech aggression that allows social pressure to be exercised in the conditions of the asymmetric social status of participants in verbal communications. The factors of linguistic objectification are investigated from the perspective of age, social, gender, personal characteristics and characteristics of subjects of discourse. As an example of verbal aggression, the speech acts of public speeches of the incumbent President of the United States of America D. Trump, which are considered as an integral part of an individual's activities, due to high semantic significance and the necessary level of interpersonal interaction, were subjected to linguistic analysis. The use of aggression in Trump's political discourse is is guided by reason, not emotion. His consistent use of derogatory nicknames, constant attention to the media, as well as the selection of offensive words that draw attention to the specific shortcomings of his addressees indicate that aggression is not based on impulsiveness or randomness. Verbal aggression aimed at lowering the opponent's social status is one of the methods of an offensive strategy and affects, sometimes significantly, the decision-making of an offended person. The use of methods of verbal aggression by D. Trump in the context of political discourse can be a powerful "weapon" both in relation to the internal political situation and in the external political arena. Such aspects, in the context of the increasing influence of forms of digital culture on the psycho-emotional sphere of a person, leave researchers with ample opportunities in the field of scientific research.

The psycholinguistic experiments reported in this paper explore the question of who gets to be the ‘judge’ according to whom we interpret linguistic expressions that seem to require some kind of epistemic anchor, such as epithets (e.g. that jerk). Experiments 1a and 1b corroborate Harris and Potts’ (2009) findings that epithets and appositives can receive non-speaker-oriented readings. Experiments 2 and 3 compare sentences with and without epithets and epistemic adverbs, and show that the presence of these elements can in fact boost the rate of non-speaker-oriented interpretations, at least in contexts that allow the text to be interpreted as fiction/narrative. We suggest this is because, in such contexts, expressions like epithets and epistemic adverbs can signal free indirect discourse.

The article deals with the actual issues of psycholinguistics, which are related to the preservation and restoration of human health. The main research directions research of psychology of health are determined and the theoretical preconditions of psycholinguistic aspects of health are analyzed. Researches in cognitive-behavioral and positive psychotherapy makes it possible to determine that the spoken words directly affect the state of person’s health. The lack of detailed empirical studies motivated us to this study, which was intended to determine the qualitative differences in the speech production of healthy and sick people. The hypothesis of the empirical study was that there are common sense traits of the narrative that unite people with a medical diagnosis. The hypothesis verification was carried out with the help of psycholinguistic techniques, in particular, the autonarrative "My Life" and the method "Psychological Autobiography". The sample was composed from oncologic patients and healthy people, students of univercities. After analysis and interpretation of the results of the study, it was found that differences in speech experience and the implementation of speech activity of healthy and sick people are in the qualitative characteristics of the subjective evaluation of the components of the internal picture of life, manifested through the analysis of the syntagmatic composition of the narrative. Common narratives that combine the speech activity of sick people are: 1) increase the proportion of words with negative emotional coloring on the assessment of their own lives; 2) increase the proportion of "affective" words on the designation of the somatic and personal components of the internal picture of life; 3) the presence of syntagmas describing autoaggression and retroflection. The study shows the correlations between the peculiarities of speech experience and the state of health of respondents. So, in this perspective psycholinguistics of health determine the laws of the influence of personality’s speech on the state of his mental, social and physical health as the main subject of its studies.

The aim of the article is to describe mechanism of the influence of the Internet memes’ visual components upon consciousness; to analyze functional and semantic relationships between visual and verbal components; to research role models (character types) of the internauts who are the creators of Internet memes with wolf as a visual component; emotional states created by Internet memes. Psycholinguistic research methods have helped to achieve this goal, namely, discourse analysis, the method of contextual and intuitive logical interpretation analysis, content analysis. Discussion & Results. Internet meme creators achieve communicative purpose by means of the wolf image due to the use of ramified conscious and unconscious associative links. The correspondence of the meaning originally put by the author in the Internet meme with its comprehension by the addressee occurs through the use of anchoring techniques which mechanism of impact is based on linking human states to certain patterns of behavior. “Anchors” usually work automatically therefore the emotional state of a person changes positively or negatively without the possibility of its regulation by the addressee. With the help of visual images Internet memes create a model world of emotions. The ultimate goal of such polycode messages is mental effect on consciousness through the method of psychological infection. As soon as an addressee’s emotional mood to be in a ready state to apprehend the message the meanings of the visual image which may be expressed explicitly or implicitly are developed in the verbal corpus of an Internet meme. In this study the Internet memes’ verbal components were divided into thematic groups (TG) describing the internauts’ emotional states. Based on the analysis of the TG it is possible to describe the role model of the Internet meme creator manifested in the features of communicative behavior. The analysis of the TG has proved that in the verbal component the internauts intend to position the background of their mental world with the corresponding emotional tone. It should be noted that verbal and visual components do not compete but complement each other, enrich the Internet meme with new meanings accumulating cultural and emotional-evaluative meanings, social stereotypes of consciousness. Conclusion. The function of the visual component is to form a special emotional tone of the information, to provide a holistic and at the same time flexible understanding of a particular message due to placing semantic accents allowing the recipient to specify the perception and interpretation of the verbal component. The link between the visual and verbal parts of Internet memes is implicit. The information presented in the visual component is based on various associative links therefore; its interpretation requires careful correlation between both components, identification of internal structural and semantic links.

Economic discourse is one of the main types of institutional discourse, which is closely correlated with political discourse. The main non-economic vectors of his research are mainly linguistically oriented, while psychological, psycholinguistic relevant research in Ukraine is still not widely published. The theses highlight and briefly analyze three basic aspects of the theoretical consideration of economic discourse from the standpoint of modern psychology: cognitive, affective and conative. The cognitive function is performed primarily by metaphors, which contribute to a deeper knowledge and understanding of complex economic facts and phenomena. Emotional attitude to these phenomena is formed through the expressiveness of economic discourse. At times, it manipulates public opinion and the economic situation in general, as it is often used in the interests of the ruling elites.

A number of theories postulate the existence of the various discourse connections which relate the elements in the text for producing a discourse model. In the central of all literary texts is the concept of time and the events which spread out from the folded position. When we read a text, furthermore to understanding other kind of aspects like the plot, goals, characters, and so on, we can understand order of the events which has already happened. The text may contain several stories; when we can understand such kind of text, we can distinguish these kind of different stories each other.

This is a case study presenting in-depth psycholinguistic analyses of the oral and written versions of a personal-experience story produced by the same adult narrator in Hebrew, taking into account discursive functions, discourse stance, linguistic expression, and information flow, processing, and cohesion. Findings of parallel spoken and written content units presenting the same narrative information point to the interface of the narrative genre with the spoken and written modalities, together with the mature cognitive, linguistic, and social skills and experience of adulthood. Both spoken and written personal-experience adult narrative versions have a non-personal, non-specific, detached stance, though the written units are more abstract and syntactically complex. Adult narrating skill encompasses both modalities, recruiting different devices for the expression of cohesion.

Objective. The paper focuses on lexical semantic derivation models and the ways they are explicated in experiential vocabulary. The study substantiates linguistic and psycholinguistic features of the models in the contrastive aspect (based on the Ukrainian and Polish languages). Materials and Methods. The material for the analysis is the Ukrainian and Polish adjectives-stimuli that represent the concepts of experiential situation. The psycholinguistic validity of the models is verified based on the results of associative experiments. The results are supposed to help establish types of associations that underlie the experiential vocabulary extensions. Results. The study appeals to the conceptions that uphold the idea of a dynamic conceptualization of the world of discourse (of a certain situation or its fragment). On that ground, the lexical semantic derivation models are considered as theoretical constructs that represent information on derivational strategies in Ukrainian and Polish. Such an approach has allowed not only to reveal cognitive mechanisms that underlie lexical (experiential) items’ semantic extensions but also to systematize the semantic shifts that occur in the contrasted languages. The extensions are considered within four lexical semantic derivation models: componential (the level of semantic components and their configurations), actantial (the level of predicate-actant structures), topological (the level of image-schema transformations) and constructional (the level of lexical constructions). Conclusions. The results show the relevance of both linguistic and psycholinguistic modelling in analysis of lexical semantic derivation. The choice of a semantic derivation strategy correlates with an informant’s response to a word-stimulus. The similarities and differences in semantic shifts are determined by constraints that set limits on the target situation extensions.

This article aims to present an analysis of Samsara's documentaryproduced by Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson. This analysis was based using aspects of discourse analysis and the concepts about time and narrative elaborated by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. From the narrative construction of the film I was able to establish a possible reading through the assembling of a hypothetical narrative chain of the scenes and the search of a narrator, which is hidden in the film. Through the analysis I was able to understand how the producers intended to demonstrate contradictory aspects of human existence and its relationship with the environment. Following the story I was able to propose insights that helped to understand the purpose of the directors for a film without speeches.

<p>This paper is concerned with the textual and contextual analysis of wife-discipline in particular in (Q 4:34) and the concept of women-beating in the Qurʾānic discourse in general. The study makes a special reference to two translations of the Qurʾān, namely: Abdel Haleem’s The Qurʾān: A New Translation (2004); and George Sale's The Qurʾān (1734). This account investigates a psycholinguistic analysis of the meaning of ‘beating’ in the entire scripture, in general, and in (Q 4:34), in particular. To achieve this, an in-depth textual and contextual surgery is performed to uncover new psycholinguistic perspectives. The study reports on attitudes of a sample of 163 Saudi women towards violence against women in KSA. Four constructs will be investigated, namely: 1) social aspects of violence against women; 2) socio-economic status⁄ educational aspects of violence against women; 3) preventive indicators of violence against women and; physical aspects of violence against women. It also highlights the claim of Halliday and Hasan (1976:9) that cohesive ties are the only source of texture. This account runs counter to that claim.</p>

ABSTRACTBackground: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by memory loss and cognitive impairment. Phonological, syntactic, semantic and discursive aspects of language may also be affected. Analysis of micro- and macrolinguistic abilities of discourse may assist in diagnosing AD. The aim of this study was to identify changes in the discourse (lexical errors and syntactic index) of AD patients. Methods: 121 elderly subjects narrated a story based on a seven-figure picture description. Results: Patients with AD presented more word-finding difficulties, revisions and repetitions, and the syntactic index was lower than controls. Conclusion: Performance in microlinguistics at the lexical and syntactic levels was lower than expected in participants with AD.

In recent decades, colour vocabulary has been actively studied by the Ukrainian and foreign scientists. Modern Linguistics has significant achievements in research of this issue, however, some of its aspects, in particular, psycholinguistic characteristics of the discourse with a colour element, still remain relevant and poorly researched. Colour has always played an important role in artistic discourse. The names of individual writers are inextricably associated with certain coloronyms, which is a so-called marker in their work. One example of this phenomenon is the colour black, that is dominant in the discourse of E.M. Remarque, which, given the mostly dramatic themes of the author’s novels, is quite expected, especially if the fact is considered through the prism of Psycholinguistics. The purpose of the given scientific investigation is to provide psycholinguistic characteristics of the discourse with the «black colour» component in E.M. Remarque’s works and to identify the impact it has on the reader in the process of perceiving the outstanding author’s texts. Implementation of the stated tasks of research involved the integrational usage of general scientific methods (such as description, induction, deduction), as well as the analysіs of dictionary definitions, current native and foreign psycholinguistic sources; contextual and structural-thematic analysis; modelling and classification of actual material. The results of the analysis of the Remarque’s discourse with the «black colour» component allow us drawing the following conclusion: the coloronym «schwarz» in E.M. Remarque’s is characterised by a wide semantic content, wherein the black colour is used by the writer both to determine the colour of the described object neutrally and to convey figurative negative semantics. Lexemes denoting black, in their direct meaning, indicate the colour of the depicted object directly. Using the colour nomination «schwarz» in symbolic meaning, the author resorts to «painting» in dark natural phenomena, which are not characterised by black; depicts dishonest and illegal actions; demonstrates negative attitude towards people. Using the specified colour nomination as the colour of clothing, objects, buildings, as well as emotions, experiences and feelings, non-verbal means of intensification the semantics of “black” – the designation of poses, gestures, facial expressions, body movements the author demonstrates not only his personal attitude towards the characters of his novels, but by focusing the consciousness of the reader on their difficult psychological and physical state, he encourages to rethink the causes and consequences of their actions. Stable association with the black colour, peculiar for a long historical and cultural development of mankind, and therefore with sad events in human life, losses, failures, loneliness, is verbalized in all analysed Remarque’s works. Thus, the black colour is the necessary element of the psycholinguistic portrait of Remarque’s character.

Proximity is the key concept for understanding a speaker's choice of Swahili demonstrative forms. The alternative approach in Leonard [1985] that proposes a speaker's concentration of attention as the key concept overlooks significant aspects of text structure. Proximity must not be conceived of, as does Leonard, only in terms of spatial distance between the speaker and a referent. Temporal, narrative, and anaphoric distance must also be considered.

The present study aims to investigate relative clause production in Chinese and English from a cognitivefunction approach that explores underlying cognitive, semantic, and discourse-pragmatic factors operative in discourse processing. With this approach we are able to account for both general and specific distributional patterns of RCs between the two languages on the one hand and between speech and writing on the other, using narrative data elicited from native speakers of both languages.

In everyday conversation, narratives are used as rhetorical tools for managing identities, allowing participants to carve out identity positions in moment-to-moment interactions. An interesting, yet understudied, focus of these narratives involves exploring the links between the discourse identities (or narrative participation roles) and larger, social identities of participants in the narrative interactions (e.g., Georgakopoulou, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007). In this paper, I build on this work by looking specifically at the relevance of narrative ratifications for the emergent discourse and social identities of those offering the ratifications. Following Bamberg’s (1997, 2003) analytical framework for examining narratives in talk-in-interaction, I examine how participants are positioned with respect to whose contributions they choose to ratify and how their ratifications (or lack thereof) make available certain discourse identities, which may then point to larger, social identities. Findings not only demonstrate the relevance of ratifications for identity work in narrative interactions, but also advance our understanding of certain aspects of narrative structure, in particular, sequences of narrative openings in talk-in-interaction.

In order to promote the practical application of psycholinguistic data in educational fields and expecting that this transfer would enhance the development of both the pedagogical field and the investigation in experimental psycholinguistics, we present two experiments to analyse the production of semantic relations in discourse, especially the causality/countercausality dimension. We found that the pattern of causal advantage is cross-wise and consistent in subjects with different levels of formal education, so it could be a suitable scaffold to develop other aspects of discourse comprehension and production. We compare our results with previous findings about discourse comprehension and interpret the data in the framework of educational processes. To use of empirical evidence about language processing on educational fields allows not only to review specific issues such as the characteristics of teaching materials, but also to improve educational process in a comprehensive way, making possible to adapt different approaches to populations with different characteristics.

The object of this study is hybrid discourse as a result of the integration of language markers and concepts of legal discourse and literary narrative. The subject of the study is the techniques, mechanisms, and means of transfer involved in the formation of hybrid discourse. The transfer of legal knowledge into a literary text is the process of transmitting knowledge marked by the legal sphere into the narrative space of a literary text in order to model the image of a female judge, identify professionally significant personality characteristics and internal contradictions integrated into a personalised concept of morality. The purpose of this work is to study verbal tools of the knowledge transfer, implemented by the language markers of legal discourse and units of a literary text in the process of formation of a heterogeneous text that is the result of functioning of hybrid discourse. The study is conducted with regard to linguistic, psycholinguistic, cultural, logical-philosophical, and cognitive-discursive approaches to the analysis of knowledge transfer and involving the structural-semantic method, methods of contextual and conceptual analysis, as well as more specific methods of profiling, component analysis, etymological analysis, etc. The authors refer to The Children Act, a novel by the British writer Ian McEwan. The thematic core of this work is the moral issues of family law and religious differences between representatives of different confessions and Judge Fiona May’s personified moral and psychological search, dealing with issues of law, personality and society, parenting, life and death. The personal model of behaviour is reconstructed in this study and it reflects professional knowledge and skills, speech characteristics, ethical and moral prerequisites of behaviour, and relationships with others that become a conceptual component of the judge’s activity. This model is regarded from the perspective of the theory of transfer of legal knowledge in the space of a literary text. The authors identify the knowledge transfer mechanisms (inference, (de)focusing, metaphorisation, adjectivisation), the main transfer techniques — textual (reverse editing, syntactic dominant, perspectivisation, antithesis, emphasis) and lexical-semantic (transformation of word meanings, semantic implications, actualisation of word etymology, profiling of individual components of meaning), and means of transfer — linguistic realities (extended context, sentence, word, seme). The selected techniques and mechanisms of transfer manifest themselves at different levels of language: semantic, syntactic, and linguo-pragmatic. The inclusion of linguistic markers and concepts of legal discourse in the space of a literary text creates a single heterogeneous context in which the significant semantic and axiological characteristics of the personified model of the morality of the judge of England are represented. The authors make a conclusion about the mutual influence of the two marked discourses.

<em>This study examines the consumer advertising which is directed towards the promotion of some product or service to the public. The study, however, is not meant to exhaust all the aspects of this particular discourse, or present an answer to all the problems it poses. Rather, it aims at uncovering the basic elements of the most pervasive, influential and inescapable discourse of the 21st century; the advertising text. It focuses on the interaction of language, image and layout, and examines advertising persuasive strategies. In doing so, it draws on various linguistic (particularly pragmatic, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic) theories. In addition, this study provides analyses of some ads, using different ways of interpretations; and ends with a discussion on the interrelationship between culture (schemes) and advertising discourse. In this connection, instances from the Egyptian media, and their analyses are provided, with a view to clarifying some rhetorical categories in Arabic Advertising, and showing that texts construct meaning through interaction with other types of discourse, and inseparable from the culture of the advertising text.</em>

The article presents the investigation of the main communicative characteristics of the English family discourse considering some psycholinguistic aspects. The investigation was based on the discourse fragments which were microdialogues between family members selected from literary works of the XX – beginning of the XXI century by means of continuous sampling. The scientists’ views concerning the peculiarities of communication in the family were analyzed. The research is theoretically based on the modern linguistic approaches to the study of the discourse as a complex versatile phenomenon. The article treats the family discourse as the communicative interaction of the speakers related by family (marital and consanguineous) ties, connected spiritually, by common household and mutual moral responsibility. It is found out that the discourse under investigation is characterized by such communicative characteristics as dialogicality, addressability, spontaneity, situationality, everyday character and informality. The communication in the family acquires a dialogical form. The interaction takes place through the direct contact of the speakers that are keenly conscious of the circumstances in which the communication proceeds. The content of the family dialogical speech can be understood when the situation in which it is developing is considered. There is a distinct correlation between the dialogical speech and the situation whose external circumstances can be absent at the moment of speech, but they are implied in the interlocutors’ consciousness and definitely reflected in it. Speech behaviour of each dialogue participant is greatly determined by partner’s speech behaviour, his/her psychological state, character and breeding. The interaction of the relatives displays the absence of the strict regulation of literary norms, arbitrary choice of lexical units, breach of normative speech rules, use of deictic means. The necessity to study the family discourse regarding a communicative situation that presupposes the notions of dominating strategy and tactics is focused on.

The aim of this study is to see how an Indonesian studying in the U.S. uses English tense and aspects to produce meaning oral narrative discourses. The Indonesian’s verbatim of narrative discourse is compared to that of a Minnesota-born English speaker studying in a university in the midwestern of the United States. The audio-recorded narrative discourses are transcribed, then foregrounding and backgrounding clauses of each participant’s oral narrative discourse are analyzed to count the number of verbs produced by each participant. The verbs are categorized into past verbs (simple, progressive, pluperfect) and non-past verbs (base forms, present tense, present progressive, present perfect). By analyzing the morphology distribution, the researcher recorded that the Minnesotan participant used past tense more frequently in foregrounding and backgrounding clauses in both narrative tasks, while the Indonesian used more temporal adverbs than that of the Minnesotan.

The present article scrutinizes two narrative aspects: story time (erzählte Zeit[1]) and narrative time (Erzähltzeit) in Shamran al-Yasery's tetralogy Abu Gatiʿ [2] examining their functions in generating atmosphere of tension and suspense. Gerard Genette in Narrative Discourse (1980) clarifies that ‘story time’ points to the chronological sequence of the events and incidents in a story. While ‘narrative time’ refers to the ‘pseudo-temporal order’ of the incidents and their arrangement in the narrative.[3] Examining the narrative ‘anachronies’[4] of Abu Gatiʿ entails inspecting different sorts of discordance in the narrative structure of the scenes which are diagnosed, in the present article, in three kinds: reversion, ellipsis and inversion. Through following a close reading and a textual analysis specific scenes, events and incidents are examined and their connections to story time and narrative time are accentuated pinpointing within the process their thematic reference. While measuring forms of anachronies, selected letters and numbers are given to the addressed incidents in order to establish ample connections between them and to render the analysis lucid and comprehensible. Debates on the relationship between the aspectual properties of verbs and past marking in Caribbean English Creoles tend to focus on two main issues. The first is the semantic function of the “relative past” and its relation to the unmarked verb, and the second is the discourse functions of the relative past marker and the unmarked verb. This paper addresses two issues related to this debate. Using fieldwork data from Belizean Creole, I present a qualitative analysis of tense usage in discourse focusing on the role of the inherent lexical aspect (aktionsart) of predicates. I examine how two different notions of past meaning are distributed between marked and unmarked verbs with different aktionsarten. I also look at the discourse function of these verbs in the contexts of the meanings expressed. I argue that an analysis of both the aktionsarten of the verbs and discourse factors are critical to developing an understanding of the range of meanings and functions of both the relative past marker and the unmarked verb. The paper also presents a new approach to the study of temporal reference in creoles. The picture-based story method provides an objective way of evaluating speakers’ choice of grounding and also facilitates comparison across speakers, given that several potentially variable aspects of the narrative are controlled for.

ABSTRACTThe present study investigates the development of grammatical aspects of narrative structure in child L1 and adult L2 acquisition in a comparative perspective. The narratives were elicited through a picture story task. In the theoretical part of the study, this task is analyzed in semantic and psycholinguistic terms. In the empirical part of the study, it is demonstrated that narratives relating to an early phase of adult L2 acquisition show strong global cohesion, whereas narratives by child L1 learners tend to have very weak cohesion up to around 5 years of age. In a second developmental phase, however, the situation is observed to be the reverse: whereas child L1 learners become very much concerned with narrative structure and accomplish very strong cohesion, adult L2 learners tend to experience a dip in performance. The observed developmental asymmetry is interpreted as indicative of a difference in cognitive resources and sociocommunicative skills between the two types of learners.

The paper shows an example of how interaction in a leadership development forum can be analyzed from a narrative-in-use perspective through a combined dialogicality and small story analysis strategy. This entails that a multimodal discourse analysis is conducted of the positioning and identity work accomplished in a research- and dialogue-based leadership development forum in a university setting. A micro-generic positioning analysis of the participants’ small story efforts is combined with an analysis of dialogicality involving other-orientation to show how storytelling takes place and how opposing discourses within organization and leadership studies co-emerge in multimodal interaction. Among other things the analysis shows how different sociomaterial interactional setups shape identity work in situ. The research contributes to the emerging study of organizational dialogical and narrative practices up close. It emphasizes both the broad (Discursive) and the local (discursive) dimensions together with sociomaterial aspects of discourse and storytelling, which are increasingly pursued and recommended within the fields of narrative, dialogue, and discourse studies.

Abstract Most theorists of history now seem to regard narrative as the only discursive model on which historians rely to make sense of the past. The structure of many works in current historiographic production, however, is not that of a narrative as defined in literary theory. The histories of World War II discussed here, for example, do not all tell a story; several of them take the form of synchronic analyses bearing on some aspects of the conflict. Furthermore, those histories of the war that tell a story follow different models and have widely divergent degrees of narrativity. That is, they resort at various levels of frequency and deliberateness to strategies that narratologists such as Meir Sternberg and Raphaël Baroni view as typical of storytelling. Positing readers who know how the war ended (the Allies won), they do not turn to suspense but seek to arouse curiosity by making counterfactual hypotheses (What if?) that offer alternatives to what actually happened. Furthermore, they attempt to create surprise by proposing “new versions” grounded in recently uncovered evidence and/or thus far unasked questions. As Dorrit Cohn speaks of the “distinction of fiction,” it would thus be legitimate to speak in these areas of the “distinction of historiography.” Indeed, the classical nineteenth-century extra-heterodiegetic narratives to which histories are frequently compared are unlikely to include counterfactuals, as they are unlikely to offer new, “better” versions of the events that they report.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Though PD is primarily a motor speech disorder during the initial stages, as the disease progresses, a gradual decline in linguistic aspects is observed as well. The effects of disease (PD) on cognition, word retrieval, syntax, and speech/voice processes may act together to manifest uniquely in spoken language tasks. There is a dearth of studies focusing on the discourse abilities in PD, especially in Indian context. Aim: The present study aims at investigating the micro and macrostructure discourse by using personal narrative task in Tamil speaking individuals with idiopathic PD and comparing it with the neuro-typical individuals Method: Two groups comprising 5 Tamil-speaking individuals with idiopathic PD in the age range of 60–85 years and 5 neuro-typical individuals were included in the study. To assess their discourse skills, participants were engaged in a personal narrative task. The analyses done were based on macro and micro structural aspects of discourse. The raw scores were subjected to suitable statistical analysis. Results: There was a statistical significance between the Parkinson & Normal group on Total number of words, No. of Different words, No. of content words, No. of Functional words, Free morphemes, Complex structure per utterances & Relevant piece per utterance in microstructural aspects. However there was no significant difference observed in the macrostructural aspects due to smaller sample size. Conclusion: It can be concluded that in addition to speech impairment, language structure is also affected in persons with PD. Intervening at the level of discourse is an important aspect as it enhances the quality of life. Keywords: Parkinson’s disease, Discourse, Tamil speaking, Micro analysis, Macro Analysis.

The development of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) has no doubt contributed to prompting a renewed interest in children’s narratives. This carefully controlled test of narrative abilities elicits a rich set of measures spanning multiple linguistic domains and their interaction, including lexis, morphosyntax, discourse-pragmatics, as well as various aspects of narrative structure, communicative competence, and language use (such as code-switching). It is particularly well suited to the study of discourse cohesion, referential adequacy and informativeness, and of course to the study of narrative structure and richness, and the acquisition of a more formal or literary register. In this commentary article, I reflect on the five empirical papers included in the special issue. I focus on methodological challenges for the analysis of narratives and identify outstanding questions.

Abstract This article explores narrative discourse in the classroom as individual and social meaning construction. Drawing largely on the work of Bakhtin—in particular, his theory of consciousness as a dialogic "boundary phenomenon"—the article positions classroom narrative discourses as co-constructions of meaning. The primary goal of the article is methodological in that it articulates how one might go about studying narratives as neither "inside" the individual nor "out there" in culture. A set of focusing questions are developed for exploring narratives in the classroom. Four focusing questions explore such aspects of narrative discourses as the sociocognitive history of activity settings, the moment-to-moment enactment of meaning, the individual child's reconstruction of meaning (his or her "internalization" of discourses), and developmental changes that occur in how children construct meaning from within textual contexts. These four questions are then applied to a case study of one child's classroom narrative discourses. This study of one first-grader serves as an exemplar of how such overlapping forms of textual inquiry could be applied to a developmental study of children's classroom discourse and learning. Last, issues of a societal-ethical nature are discussed as an important dimension of the theoretical and methodological positioning of narrative as a boundary phenomenon. ABSTRACT. Despite the significance of discourse impairments, they have not been thoroughly investigated in Persian-speaking patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Objective: the aim of this study was to perform a multi-level analysis of narrative discourse in Persian-speaking patients with mild AD and to compare them with healthy elderly. Methods: the study included 14 older adults with mild AD and a matched group of 14 healthy elderly. Using a storytelling task based on serial pictures, both macro- and micro-linguistic aspects of narrative discourse were assessed. Cohesion ratio and coherence were investigated as macrolinguistic dimensions of discourse. The studied microlinguistic features included syntactic complexity and verbal errors (mostly involving phonological and semantic paraphasias and mazes). Severity of AD was determined using the Cognitive Dementia Rating (CDR). Results: there were significant differences between the groups regarding cohesion ratio (0.9 ± 0.34 vs. 1.29 ± 0.45, p = 0.02) and coherence scores (2.43 ± 0.41 vs. 3.02 ± 0.81, p = 0.03). Verbal errors and syntactic complexity did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusion: Persian-speaking patients with mild AD show macrolinguistic impairments in producing discourses based on picture description. Therefore, intervention protocols should focus on the ability to organize information on a specific subject and also to connect sentences produced using appropriate cohesive ties.

A historical critical approach to narratives has contributed significantly to the analysis of ancient narratives. However, this approach has somehow unfairly ignored some other critical aspects of many ancient narratives. Judith is no exception to this claim. While appreciating the contribution of historical critical approaches to Judith (i.e., the questions on authorship, historical and geographical inconsistencies etc.), the aim of this article is to go beyond the historicity of Judith, and reveal some narrative techniques employed by the author in creating a woman protagonist who is destined to achieve the unthinkable in the minds of the men of her contemporary world. This article explores these narrative techniques by employing the narrative analysis, narrative syntax in particular, of the Greimassian approach to narrative texts. Subsequently, this article contributes to research of Judith by revealing the path that Judith followed on her quest to save the Jewish religion from extinction during the Second Temple period.Â

The mysterious Russian soul is always looking for non-trivial aspects of a problem. The modern coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has become the subject of ridicule in the everyday laughing practices of Russian people. In this case, the laughing discourse acts as a form of psychological defense and struggle against the inevitable evil. The importance of the research is due to the lack of knowledge of the communicative and cognitive aspects of laughter discourse and the need to study the modern anecdote on the topic "coronavirus pandemic" in the aspect of forming the stability of the human psyche in the conditions of pandemics and isolation. The relevance of this work is also determined by the fact that it expands the empirical base of discourse linguistics, LSP theory and practice, motivology and emotive linguistics, whose interests include consideration of the problem of the influence of emotions on language. The relevance of the work also lies in the fact that special attention is paid to the little-studied phenomenon of "black humor", which is vividly represented in the laughing discourse about coronavirus. Unfortunately, today Russia occupies the leading positions in terms of the number of people infected with virus COVID-19. Archetypal fear of unknown Evil, of invisible death evoke chthonic experiences of the unconscious from the depths of the subconscious, actualizing the laughable techniques of devaluing danger as one of the effective methods of psychological protection. The world stereotype defines Russian people as frowning and unsmiling, extremely hostile to the world around them. The article reveals the specifics of modern Russian anecdotes about COVID-19. This allows the reader to understand what the stress resistance and resilience of the Russian person in a situation of degenerate press of negative information in various media is. This situation is complicated by fake news stories about the pandemic. What are Russian people laughing at during the pandemic? What helps them survive and stay mentally healthy in this situation? What is the specifics of Russian jokes about the pandemic? How do these anecdotes structure a person's inner space in a new way? What Parallels can we find in a laughing culture that plays up the stigmatized situations of tragedies, wars, and epidemics? This article is intended as an attempt to answer these and other questions.

The subject of this research is the news content of public pages in the social network VKontakte. The goal consists in examination of peculiarities of organization of the regional news discourse, comparison of Tomsk and Novosibirsk news public pages. For achieving the set goal, the article employs the methods of qualitative (manual coding and machine learning) and quantitative data processing (content analysis, thematic analysis, psycholinguistic analysis). The empirical material contains regional news reports on sociopolitical topics, available for public viewing in the social network VKontakte (Tomsk and Novosibirsk). Analysis is conducted on the 3,786 postings in Novosibirsk and 887 postings in Tomsk. The author determines peculiarities and differences of media consumption depending on the region. It is noted that the federal news enjoy greater popularity among the users of the social network VKontakte; Tomsk residents are more concerned with the news reports covering regional events. The article reveals the specifics of creating news content characterized by the tendency towards narrativization of the news discourse. The prevalent narrative strategy of the media authors of regional news public pages consists in factual interpretation of the material with responses of high-ranking officials, authorized representatives of various structures, as well as regular persons (their opinions and attitudes, value judgments).

The novel presents a variety of writings of silence; but we limit ourselves, in the context of the present work, to the most relevant aspects, namely interruptions in narratives, narrative ellipses and point of suspension as the particular language of silence. These three modalities nevertheless serve a prolix discourse, and are innovate. Suddenly the novel exemplifies what contemporary literature calls the anti-novel.

The aim of the research is looking for the ways to intensify the future translators’ analytical and thinking activity during their independent work in online teaching. The author strives to achieve it through the combination of post-editing machine-translated texts and the Think-aloud protocol procedure. It is also assumed that this combination reduces the students’ dependence on the MT target text structure, as well as improves their competence in translating specialized texts. The methodology of research involved experimental post-editing-based online teaching (28 contact hours and 92 hours of independent work) of an elective university course ‘Specifics of translating English-language discourse in the domain of Psychology’ to the first-year MA students (majoring in English and Translation) whose command of English ranged from C1 to C2 levels in the CEFR classification. The parameters of analysis included the percentage of the students’ uploaded home tasks, the degree of the subjects’ post-editing intensity in their weekly homework, the students’ independence in the interim and final tests, as well as the marks in the Final test. The results of the analysis demonstrated a substantial difference between various groups of the subjects by all indicators. The amount of home tasks uploaded by the subjects in groups A and B (with more intensive analytical and thinking activity) exceeds the similar parameter in groups C and D (with less intensive activity) more than twofold. There is a considerable advantage of the groups A and B (and even C) subjects’ post-editing intensity in their weekly homework as compared to group D. The intensity of the students’ analytical and thinking activity decreased from the highest (group A) to moderately high (group B) to average (group C) and to low (group D). The degree of the students’ independence in the interim and final tests decreased from 85.0% (group A) to 35.0% in group D, with the remaining groups’ indicators in between – 59.0% (group B) and 46.0% (group C). These indicators clearly correlate with the average marks in the final test, which amounted to 93.80, 63 and 53 points (out of 100) in groups А, В, C and D respectively. Conclusions. Post-editing, in combination with the modified TAP procedure, contributes to the efficient development of the specialized texts translation competence due to the intensification of the students’ analytical and thinking activity, reduces their dependence on the MT target text structure and correlates with the improvement of the overall quality of their translation.

The subject of this research is the fundamental concepts of the analytics of trauma and means of their integration into an aesthetic discourse. The goal of this work consists in determination of theoretical aspects of the aesthetics of trauma. The author examines such types of art as literature, cinema and painting, and demonstrates the ways of deflection of traumatic experience in the artworks. Discipline of the aesthetics of art is viewed as an autonomous phenomenon, which is of great importance for the development modern philosophical and aesthetic concepts. The research methods are structured on the philosophical-aesthetic approach that leans on the analysis of individual concepts of the aesthetics of trauma; aesthetic methods of research in development of aesthetic concepts in the context of practical examination of literary text are laced with the methods of literary studies and culturological approach. The conclusion is made that literature and cinematography re-create narrative around the historical trauma by testifying to the trauma in such way that the recipient could borrow the narrative and experience a relief in working through the trauma by means of the language of art. Painting depicts frightful, and allows the audience to feel therapeutic effect through clashing with the frightful.

Abstract The paper explores the intersections between rhetoric and religion in Graeco-Roman antiquity, both pagan and Christian. Rhetorical forms of religious expression include discourse about the gods (narrative, eulogy, preaching, naming) and discourse addressed to the gods, especially prayers and hymns. Rhetoric itself possesses a religious dimension in the power of words, the effectiveness of speech, and the magic of persuasion. Discourse can have supernatural effectiveness, and the orator can be invested with religious powers. Aelius Aristides (2nd c. CE) displays these different aspects; his Sacred Tales illustrate the cross-fertilization of rhetoric and religion.

Narrative strategies and discourse features correlate strongly with the characterization, thematic significance as well as rhetorical effect in narrative fictions. This paper will conduct a comparative study of Fu Weici’s and Li Jihong’s Chinese version of The Moon and Sixpence with particular reference to five examples from two narratological aspects, namely unreliable narration and narrative tense. Attention will be focused on to what extent and how relevant stylistic markers of these narrative features have been recreated in the target text. It is suggested that translators should always be sensitive enough to detect any stylistic markers of unique narrative features, identify their association with characterization, thematic and artistic value and reproduce them in the target text so as to ensure an optimal transference of their embedded rhetorical effect.

Beckett's early fiction retreats from the all-inclusive, encyclopedic scope of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, instead seeking the minimal conditions necessary for the survival of narrative, or even of utterance itself. The resulting formal experiments lead to insights into the structure of Beckett's material – in this case language and narrative form – which impose themselves as that material is taken to a kind of limit. By refusing conventional narration, retreating from conventional significance, and ignoring accepted hierarchies of relevance, Beckett's narratives join Susan Stewart's category of critical "nonsense" texts which "[make] conscious aspects of context that would remain unarticulated in everyday life and the fictions of realism".
