<p>The aim of this work was to develop and test the questionnaire of imaginary representations of the professional activity of athletes. We have developed a questionnaire of 100 questions, including 9 parameters (subscales). The questionnaire was tested on 399 sportsmen, 48.4% of which were candidates for the master of sports, master of sports or international class master of sports. The statistical analysis showed a good agreement of these parameters (subscales), which was 0,61&mdash;0,89. Characteristic features of image representations (IR) were revealed for representatives of different sports. The results showed that in dynamic sports under conditions of uncertainty athletes more often note the IR of temporal, spatial, informational, energetic aspects of the sports situation, as well as the game intellect. In solitarysports athletes more often talk about motivational-personal aspects of representation, in group sports &mdash; about the representation of the social environment, which is explained by the specifics inherent in solitary and group sports activities. It is also shown that in dynamic sports under given conditions "peaks" of the profile are noted on the representation of technical-tactical, energy components and motivational-personal aspects. In static sports technical-tactical and motivational-personal aspects of representation come to the fore. Thus, the questionnaire of imaginary representations of professional activity of athletes can be used as a tool for diagnostics of peculiarities of imaginary representations in athletes.</p>

AbstractObjective: to analyze the representations about domestic violence against women, among health professionals of Family Health Units.Method: qualitative study based on the Theory of Social Representations. Data were collected by means of evocations and interviews, treating them in the Ensemble de Programmes Pemettant L'Analyse des Evocations software - EVOC and content analysis.Results: nurses, physicians, nursing technicians and community health agents participated. The evocations were answered by 201 professionals and, of these, 64 were interviewed. The central core of this representation, comprised by the terms "aggression", "physical-aggression", "cowardice" and "lack of respect", which have negative connotations and were cited by interviewees. In the contrast zone, comprised by the terms "abuse", "abuse-power", "pain", "humiliation", "impunity", "suffering", "sadness" and "violence", two subgroups were identified. The first periphery contains the terms "fear", evoked most often, followed by "revolt", "low self-esteem" and "submission", and in the second periphery "acceptance" and "professional support".Conclusion: this is a structured representation since it contains conceptual, imagetic and attitudinal elements. The subgroups were comprised by professionals working in the rural area and by those who had completed their professional training course in or after 2004. These presented a representation of violence different from the representation of the general group, although all demonstrated a negative connotation of this phenomenon.

The purpose of this study is to investigate problem representation and judgment by auditing professionals within the context of a going-concern task. Our results suggest more experienced auditors have more concise problem representations than do novices. In addition, our results show that some types of concepts listed in the problem representation are associated with judgment, regardless of experience level. This study makes several contributions. First, understanding differences in problem representation at different levels of experience (novice, intermediate, and experienced) gives insight into the process of how representations change as experience changes/develops. Understanding the development of “becoming qualified” to make judgments regarding the going-concern evaluation assists in (1) the development of teaching approaches for analyzing a company's financial condition, and (2) professional development for less-experienced professionals. Further, our measure of problem representation, similar to that in Christ's (1993) study, provides a task-sensitive measure of problem representation for accounting research. This should have important implications for understanding expertise development in complex problem-solving tasks that auditors and accountants face.

The objective of the paper is to answer the question how students-future environmental engineers define their practice through the analysis of their social representations of acmeology and its influence on professional becoming. Two methods of research were used by us: theoretical analysis and diagnostic tests. It is stated that social representation is an “environment” in relation to the person/group. The professional becoming and acmeology representation constitutes a concept simultaneously hybrid and frame in an area of studies, the social psychology that has been constructed from the interdisciplinary nature. Social representation gives a possibility to comprehend professional mobility understanding. The concept of the social representations was characterized, the understanding of which by future environmental engineers was analyzed in given article. The social representation issue of professional becoming and acmeology designates a particular knowledge form. We have analyzed the understanding of social representation of professional becoming by students. Two methods of research were used by us: theoretical analysis and diagnostic tests. Students of 1-4 courses of the training direction “Technosphere safety” took part in the surveys. In conclusion it is stated that social representation professional becoming and acmeology could provide an increasing of future environmental engineers’ professional interests, as well using personality resources for success achievements within professional activity.

This study aimed to further our understanding of the social representations of nurses and the nursing profession by communication professionals, since they are intermediates in the decoding of imaging and written representations about society. Method: this is a qualitative study, based on the social representation theory of Moscovici. Five communication professionals working on radio, television, written press, advertising and events were interviewed. Results suggest 1) ignorance about the nurse's field of work, job market and nursing profession categorization. 2) nurses' invisibility before the media and society and 3) nurse's own responsibility to obtain professional recognition and visibility. Participants in this study pointed two essential processes for building a more coherent image of nursing and nurses: 1) exposing the profession primarily before the media, which ignores its potentialities, and 2) through the media in order to reach the population in general.

This article explores female occupational identity construction by looking at the issue of media representations of women’s police work in the United Kingdom. The example, television representation, discussed here, is the character of Sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, a UK police drama written by a UK-based playwright, Sally Wainwright. As the lead character in Happy Valley, Sergeant Catherine Cawood’s on-screen portrayal will be the focus of the discussion in this article. Building on findings from previous research undertaken by the author, which explored how gendered identities of women police professionals are represented in the media, this article argues that television representations of UK female police work portray a particular form of professional femininity, one which I argue is still highly ‘gendered’, mainly because such representation of women’s police work relies on narratives centred on the effective and competent use of ‘emotional labour’.

- For long, Health Psychology has been interested in the cognitive processes which shape the concepts of health and illness. Less space has been devoted to the study of pain and its representation. Adopting a social representations approach, the present paper inquires the shared features of the representation of pain. In a joint interdisciplinary project University of Padova - Hospital of Rovigo, the content, field and structure of SR shared by health professionals (N = 245) and students (N = 163) have been analysed. Data gathered through a free association task to the word-stimulus "pain" has been sub- mitted to correspondence factor analysis and to analysis of rank and frequency. The results have been discussed with professionals in focus groups. The main results show a conception which appears normative, based on "classic" dualisms such as mind vs. body, evaluation vs. experience. The prevalence of aspects of classification, coherent with the diagnostic practice, enhances the importance of formative moments which allow to widen and diversify the span of interpretations and practices relative to the understanding and treatment of pain.Key words: pain, social representations, professional, students, institutional changeParole chiave: dolore, rappresentazioni sociali, professionisti, studenti, cambiamento istituzionale

The study defines two main research areas of ideas about a rescuer psychologist. The first area is devoted to the issue of creating social representations about the specialist psychologist and his/her relations with representatives of other professional groups. The other area is represented by works focused on the direct analysis of the profession of psychologist, specific peculiarities of professional activity and personal characteristics of the psychologist. It is indicated that the study of the representations about rescuer psychologist’ involves collective consciousness, and the main direction that allows to solve the reconstruction problem of idea about a rescuer psychologist in the system of categories and conceptual coordinates is psychosemantics. For this purpose, the method of associative experiment defines the basic constructs used by the population to evaluate the representation about a psychologist. The obtained words associations were used to develop a method of semantic scaling of the concept "Psychologist". The research has constructed the semantic profiles of perception of a civilian psychologist and a rescuer psychologist, their most pronounced characteristics were defined. With the help of multidimensional scaling the place of rescuer psychologist in psychosemantic space of psychologists of different kinds of activity was determined. Thus, the rescuer psychologist has the closest professional similarity with a military psychologist and forensic psychologist. According to the respondents' opinion, he/she (a rescuer psychologist) mainly provides psychological correction and rehabilitation, he/she has to work in uncomfortable and dangerous conditions, and also to deal with both individual and group psychological problems.

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the process of the constitution and evolution of social representations and practices referent to aids, based on studies carried out in the last eleven years among health professionals. METHOD: a comparison of representational structures of aids in different decades was undertaken, accompanied by a study of the silent zone, involving health professionals. Data collection and analysis included techniques of free association, structural analysis, and study of the silent zone. RESULTS: the existence of a process of change was observed in the social representations of aids, with the introduction of the possibility of co-existence with the disease and the reduction of the importance of death. CONCLUSIONS: this process is presented as the result of a complex movement of symbolic constructions arising from human interactions, contributing to knowledge of ways of thinking associated with the syndrome and to professional practices in healthcare.

Abstract This study aimed at describing community health agents’ representational structure on domestic violence against women. A quantitative-qualitative research study based on the Theory of Social Representations in its structural approach and carried out in a municipality from inland Bahia, Brazil. The community health agents participated through free evocation and centrality techniques: choix-par-bloc, constitution of word pairs and mise-en-cause, from May to August 2019. Data analysis was carried out by means of the EVOC software (Ensemble of Programs Permettant I’analyse des Evocations), similarity analysis and mise-en-cause analysis. These professionals’ representational structure is organized from the central elements of disrespect and sadness, which attribute negative meanings to the representation regarding their positions and repercussions; the other elements integrate specific information to the structure of the representations, justifying them. It is concluded that the understanding regarding organization of the community agents’ social thinking about the phenomenon allows its problematization, as well as the elaboration of prevention and coping strategies for women in situations of violence, the aggressors and the community.

Introduction: Representation by a small group of chosen representatives is a common used strategy for decision making within a large heterogeneous group of people. In hospital and first-line setting, we measured the level of representatives-peers agreement for representatives that were selectively chosen by peers and those that were randomly selected.Method: Professionals working in hospital-obstetric and first-line midwifery domains, 23 representatives and 114 represented peers, gave their opinion on obstetric topics by ranking 681 statements on a 10-point Likert scale. Correlations between representatives and peers scores were assessed with Bland-Altman difference plots. Level of agreement was evaluated by area under the curve (AUC) of the difference in statement score.Results: Statement scores of chosen representatives correlated well with their peers (r = 0.91). Fifty percent of representatives and peers scores differed less than 1.9 point. The average representative-peers agreement was 77%. Selectively chosen gynecologists and midwives showed comparable levels of agreement (gyn AUC 0.77 vs. mid AUC 0.75, p = 0.105), whereas randomly selected professionals tend to differ in professional view (gyn AUC 0.80 vs. mid AUC 0.74, p = 0.052). The selection method led to no differences within the group of gynecologists (chosen AUC 0.77 vs. random AUC 0.80, p = 0.220) and midwives (chosen AUC 0.75 vs. random AUC 0.74, p = 0.859).Conclusion: Decision making by representatives within a diverse group of professionals, largely reflects the opinion of their peers. The selection method of representatives and the professionals’ working environment do not statistically affect the level of representative-peers agreement.

Genetics and organic chemistry are areas of science that students regard as difficult to learn. Part of this difficulty is derived from the disciplines having representations as part of their discourses. In order to optimally support students’ meaning-making, teachers need to use representations to structure the meaning-making experience in thoughtful ways that consider the variation in students’ prior knowledge. Using a focus group setting, we explored 43 university students’ reasoning on representations in introductory chemistry and genetics courses. Our analysis of eight focus group discussions revealed how students can construct somewhat bewildered relations with disciplinary-specific representations. The students stated that they preferred familiar representations, but without asserting the meaning-making affordances of those representations. Also, the students were highly aware of the affordances of certain representations, but nonetheless chose not to use those representations in their problem solving. We suggest that an effective representation is one that, to some degree, is familiar to the students, but at the same time is challenging and not too closely related to “the usual one”. The focus group discussions led the students to become more aware of their own and others ways of interpreting different representations. Furthermore, feedback from the students’ focus group discussions enhanced the teachers’ awareness of the students’ prior knowledge and limitations in students’ representational literacy. Consequently, we posit that a focus group setting can be used in a university context to promote both student meaning-making and teacher professional development in a fruitful way.

The paper which follows was written in response to recent discussions in the professional literature about the appropriateness of union membership for allied health professionals. The paper looks first at the concept of professionalism, the relevance of labelling an occupational group as professional, and its implications for this discussion. It then explores some of the reasons for the choice of membership in either a union or a professional organization. Finally, it discusses some possible ways in which this dichotomy can be reconciled and questions whether or not the choice of professional representation needs to be an absolute dichotomy.

This article examines the role of the voice in practices of representation in nineteenth-century parliament. It asks how textual representations of vocal practices of political representation can be mobilized for the histories of politics and representation, and how such an enquiry can complicate our understanding of representation as a multifarious practice organized around speech. The article takes a particular case as its point of departure: that of the different Assemblées of nineteenth-century France, its vocal performances and the many practices of transcription, reporting and comment, such as those produced by an increasingly professional class of stenographers, journalists and satirists. Tracing the various ways in which representatives ventriloquized others, and were ventriloquized by different audiences and commentators, it draws attention to the acoustic aspects of parliamentary speech, and of the concept of representation itself. We focus on the representative quality of political vocality itself and also consider the practice of representing political speeches on paper (e.g. as transcripts or by journalists). Finally, and most importantly, we reflect on how the use of such representations could make the MP’s voice present even where his body was not. Thinking about the French case in a wide transnational context, we argue that including extra-linguistic aspects of speech in our analyses of oratory might draw attention to the embodied practices that served to make, imagine or sometimes disrupt beliefs about national belonging – thus delving into understandings of trustworthiness and political effectiveness beyond the particular national framework. Consequently, thinking about speech with and as sound allows us to think beyond the nation or national institutions when examining the practice of modern politics, its development and the continued importance of ventriloquial imaginations and materialities in political speech.

It is essential to study learning disabilities (LD) representations by education professionals since they are the ones who are more directly involved in their identification and intervention. This research analyzes the representations of the concept of LD of 310 Portuguese education professionals (regular education teachers, special education teachers, and psychologists). Through a questionnaire that consists of three parts, we examine the perspectives of the professionals regarding: 1) the identification criteria (e.g., exclusion; discrepancy; RTI) and the phenomenology of LD (manifestations; specific nature of LD); 2) the use, broad or narrow, of the LD term; and 3) the Portuguese legislation regarding LD. The results obtained indicate the agreement with the manifestations of LD (e.g., low achievement), with the criterion of discrepancy and with a dimensional view of LD. The professionals considered that LD may be due to contextual factors (e.g., socioeconomic disadvantage, family interactions, and inadequate teaching conditions). Participants also expressed agreement with a very comprehensive use of the term (e.g., in the absence of a diagnosis, in school failure situations). Education professionals also expressed a negative perspective regarding the educational support given to LD in Portugal. The comparisons between professional groups have documented the existence of certain significant differences.

This study aimed to investigate the social representations of professionals included in the team of Family Health Strategy (physicians, nurses and dentists) respecting the action possibilities and contributions of the pharmacist for the basic care, and based on social psychology and, particularly, on the theory of social representations. The epistemological basis of the research is qualitative, and the data were collected by means of individual semi-structured interviews, which were submitted to analysis of categorical thematic content. Apparently, the majority of professionals already inserted in the team know and recognize the importance of professional pharmacists in the basic care, as well as their potential contribution to this topic. The representations were constructed according to the following parameters: a) the study object and the intervention area, b) the individual practice of every professional and c) his/her action in specific cases. The quality of the professional or personal experience concerning the action of these professionals has contributed for the knowledge about the possibilities of pharmacists' intervention in basic care.

AbstractDesign representations are important tools for designers in the design process. To help designers choose the appropriate representation, taxonomies have been proposed based on type, degree of fidelity, and when to use them. However, Design representations may also play an important role in designers' communication with users and enabling users as co-designers. Therefore, new taxonomies, focusing on design representations’ potential mediating roles in collaborative design processes with users, have been developed. The purpose of this interview study, with twelve designers within Swedish industry, was thus to investigate how designers use design representations in communication with users in the design process. The study indicates that the designers mainly interacted with users in order for them to answer specific design questions or to evaluate design solutions. If design representations’ value for facilitating communication and collaboration with users should be emphasized, we need to shift from teaching mainly taxonomies related to fidelity levels or when to use them in the design process, and rather educate future designers about design representations inherent potential to mediate and enhance the dialogue with users.

OBJECTIVES: to analyze and compare the incorporation of the ethical-doctrinal and organizational principles into the social representations of the Unified Health System (SUS) among health professionals. METHOD: a study grounded in Social Representations Theory, undertaken with 125 subjects, in eight health institutions in Rio de Janeiro. The free word association technique was applied to the induction term "SUS", the words evoked being analyzed using the techniques of the Vergès matrix and similitude analysis. RESULTS: it was identified that the professionals' social representations vary depending on their level of education, and that those with higher education represent a subgroup responsible for the process of representational change identified. This result was confirmed through similitude analysis. CONCLUSION: a process of representational change is ongoing, in which it was ascertained that the professionals incorporated the principles of the SUS into their symbolic constructions. The similitude analysis was shown to be a fruitful technique for research in nursing.

Considering the potential for stereotypes to shape professional expectations, the four researchers in this study investigated photographic representation of adult men and women in implied positions of authority in 50 years (1962–2011) of issues of Music Educators Journal ( MEJ). Data included every photograph ( N = 7,288) of adults conducting, teaching or presenting, or granted the authority of having their picture labeled with their name (named persons), and were analyzed by year over the 50-year period. Results showed that females composed 28% of these photographs, with the largest representation of females being found in the teaching/presenting category (56%) and markedly smaller representations of females found in the conducting (21%) and named persons (20%) categories. Fluctuations in certain categories across the five decades suggest that while representation of males and females in MEJ has changed in 50 years, inequity persists. Implications include a call for greater attention and effort toward equitable representation in music education media for publishers, authors, and other contributors in addition to increased sensitivity to the representations of male and female stereotypes and professional expectations encountered by music educators and students.

OBJECTIVES: understand the Social Representations about needlestick injuries elaborated by Nursing Technicians and analyze how these representations influence their conducts. METHOD: the data, obtained by interviews, were processed using ALCESTE software and their analysis was based on Serge Moscovici's Social Representations Theory. RESULTS: it was evidenced that, after the accident, these professionals take care of the affected area. Then, they report the accident, motivated by the fear of catching HIV and hepatitis. The different feelings experienced are due to this fear and the way they were forwarded by the institution, reflecting in the cause they attribute to their accident. CONCLUSIONS: it was verified that knowledge about the accident as a whole is very incipient in this professional group, demanding continuing education and greater emphasis on this subject in professional training. It is expected that this study draws public authorities and health institutions' attention to the problem and that it modifies Nursing Technicians' Social Representations about percutaneous exposure.

The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experience of professional instrumental musicians who have experienced playing-related injuries. The study used a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology developed to examine this lived experience. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 professional musicians, followed by a focus group where preliminary findings were presented to participants and their feedback was sought. Other sources of lived experience included participant-observation by the researcher, who is a musician and has experienced injuries, and biographic and artistic representations of musical performance and its loss, including literature, films, and television. The findings were summarized in a visual representation unique to this study. The representation illustrates three roles--musician, worker, and teacher--that are participated in, and disrupted by, the experience of being injured. In addition, the experience of a playing-related injury takes place within the context of a healthcare system which was perceived as insufficient to meet their needs: specialized care was rarely available and, if available, was not local or timely; treatment operated on a fee-for-service model when many musicians had meagre incomes and lacked coverage for these services; and treatment provided often failed to allow musicians to continue to perform at the level they had previously achieved. Finally, the representation illustrated four existentials--lived time, space, body and social relations--that permeated the experience. This study suggests that improvements to healthcare delivery and education of musicians, music teachers, and healthcare professionals are needed.

Abstract Current mental health policy requires consumer involvement in all levels of health service management (i.e. planning, implementation, delivery and evaluation). However, current models often limit consumers to ‘representation’ roles that are criticized for silencing consumer views. This study compares understandings of consumer representatives’ and health professionals’ participation in decision-making processes in the mental health sector in Australia. Story completion methods were employed, with 34 participants (21 consumers, 8 health professionals and 5 people identifying both as consumer and health professional) completing a story stem about either a consumer representative or a health professional changing a committee meeting agenda. Using a thematic approach, three overarching themes were developed: how consumer representative roles remain unvalued, how such lack of value translates to not achieving co-production and how consumer representative roles can be better supported through allyship or subversion against organizational cultural norms. Findings suggest that organizational cultural norms in health settings need to be more inclusive of consumers to maximize the benefits of partnerships and fulfil policy expectations. Two methods for greater empowerment of consumers working in mental health are through allyship with non-consumer health professionals who support the goals of the consumer movement, and subversion of current practices.

Visual and audiovisual advertising is an influential social language that transforms representations of reality into cultural references, with direct implications for the perception of diversity. However, despite its impact on the fabric of society, few studies have tackled the representation of phenotypic variability in advertising by combining academic and professional perspectives on the phenomenon in Spain. Our study explores this matter through systematic data collection from 834 TV adverts, coding data on 359 on-screen characters, and in-depth interviews with 38 advertising professionals. The conclusions of the study show, among other findings: (a) the low level of phenotypic diversity in television advertising; (b) the under-representation of certain groups; and (c) the complexity of decision-making between clients and agencies, who have to reconcile risk aversion with the effectiveness required for any advertising campaign. This research can be of use for companies in the advertising sector (giving them improved knowledge of specific targets) and policymakers (by helping to promote better intercultural dynamics and the integration of minority groups).

ABSTRACT Objective: analyze the social representation of undergraduates from the health area in which were scholars of PET-Saúde of the UFRJ-Macaé Professor Aloísio Teixeira Campus about this program and its contribution to the respective professional training. Method: This is an exploratory, descriptive study, with a qualitative approach. A total of 38 undergraduates participated, and a professional socioeconomic questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used to collect data. To analyze the data, thematic content analysis was used. Results: The results showed that PET-Saúde integrates undergraduates, health professionals and community, seeking the interdisciplinarity and the interrelation of those involved, articulating the scientific knowledge with the common sense for the transformation of the health service. Conclusion: The program encourages population's empowerment and the critical, reflexive thinking of undergraduates and professionals about the health-disease process and acts as a source of transformations in the training of health professionals in response to the demands of the Unified Health System (SUS).

This study is focused on the subject representation based on a reflective perspective in terms of ethics in the field. It aims to analyze the professional perception of Brazilian university librarians about ethics in subject representation. It is a descriptive study of a quantitative nature that usesthe application of online survey, which was applied to professionals in charge of managing the technical processing section of university libraries located in federal public universities in Brazil. The results demonstrate that ethics is well assimilated by technical processingmanagers, even though they face interpretive dilemmas as well as a major concern about indexing process and its embodiment via term. Despite every care in the equal treatment of the different issues, reported by the respondents, inconsistent substitutes are still echoing in the information retrieval system, making it necessary to seek training and unrestricted use of documentary instruments in order to avoid biased interpretations and representations. Simultaneously, qualification, collaboration and participation of the user are understood as a way of supporting the ethical instance of the subject representation, as well as the need for further evolution of the library literature within thisperspective. It is concluded that the ethical dimension in the subject representation is understood by Brazilian university librarians who can identify impasses, difficulties, problems, solutions and needs for greater assertiveness in this context.

Using matched data from an original survey administered to organizers throughout the United States and election reports from the National Labor Relations Board, the author analyzes organizing campaigns of professional and non-professional workers. Professional workers have long been thought of as difficult to organize, yet they are strategically important to unions given their growing numbers in today’s economy. The author assesses whether unions and employers use different approaches in their organizing drives for professionals. An interactive model is used to test whether professionals’ distinct identity moderates the effect of common determinants of a representation election on the election outcome. The results show the benefit of an interactive model, as it highlights the importance of developing a campaign strategy unique to the group being organized.

As society's practical experts on mental ill-health, mental health professionals work at the interface between politics, “expert” theories of mental illness and their lay equivalents in common sense. This paper describes research conducted from the perspective of social representations theory exploring the basic understanding of mental ill-health amongst communities of mental health practitioners in the UK and France. Professionals construct notions of mental ill-health articulated around three central themes of difference, distress and disruption, and adopt social rather than medical models of their work. Despite their expert status, professionals' representations are fraught with uncertainties that are lived out in eclectic treatment strategies. This research highlights the role of interactions between politics, professional practitioners and lay representations in contemporary societal constructions of mental ill-health.

The paper features the problem of the qualification standard for court representatives introduced into the Civil Procedure Code and the Arbitration Procedure of the Russian Federation. The current legislation that regulates relations in the field of higher education allows for a broader interpretation of the concept of “person with higher education”. In this regard, not every person with a higher legal education will be able to provide a qualitative representation in court. It may interfere with the right to qualified legal assistance and does not improve the quality of such assistance. The authors do not approve of the fact that the figure of attorney was excluded from the final text of the law, as well as the impossibility of joint representation of the party’s interests by several persons, including those without higher legal education, provided that at least one of them has the necessary education. The authors highlight various separate procedural problems associated with the non-uniform character of the requirements for representatives depending on the type of court. These problems are also found in the implementation of another institute introduced by the Federal Law of November 28, 2018, No. 451-FZ – namely, reference of jurisdiction.

Based on the data of public opinion polls, the article assesses the degree of politicization and involvement in the practice of civic participation of a social group of “professionals”, by which we mean the Russian people with higher education and, as a rule, earning a living through mental labour. It is believed that this very part of society is one of the main pillars of democratic regimes in most of the developed countries. In the Russian realities, as the authors of the article note, the representatives of this group for a long time were focused on individual self-realization and avoided participation in the social and political life of the country, that led to the lack of adequate representation of their interests in public policy. In the past few years, as demonstrated by the FCTAS RAS studies, a demand for democratic participation began to form against the backdrop of the awareness of “professionals”, as well as of many other representatives of the middle class, of the importance of a favorable social environment (security, including environmental security, the presence of a developed social infrastructure, non-interference in the citizens private life, etc.). The authors believe that this is a request not only for adequate representation of the interests of these groups in the state, but also for changing the very nature of relations between the society and the state. The authors emphasize that the direct involvement of “professionals” in the practice of political and social participation is of “pulsating” nature yet, representing their reaction to certain political events that seem important. Despite the fact that the level of this involvement is not very high, nevertheless, it noticeably (and sometimes multiple) exceeds similar indicators of other socio-professional groups. In the event of a further deterioration in the quality of the socio-political environment and a decrease in the standard of living in the country, the “background” interest of the majority of Russian “professionals” in politics might be transformed into systematic and more active practices of political participation.

This article describes the development of judicial representation in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century. For the first time, the organizational design and legislative consolidation of judicial representation took place in cities with Magdeburg law. The emergence of professional judicial representatives was associated, first of all, with the adoption of the Statute of 1529, which contains legal norms that allow substituting parties in court. The status of professional representatives – lawyers who were called procurators – was consolidated. The statute of 1566, which actually summarized the 30-year practice of law, quite clearly regulated the conduct of the case in court, both personally and through a procurator. The grounds were established when a lawyer was provided free of charge by appointment of a court. The 1588 Statute regulated in detail the procedure for empowering a judicial representative. The author concludes that the institution of representation is firmly rooted in the judicial process, received its written confirmation in the Statutes and, as a result, led to the formation of the institution of the Advocacy.

Quantity estimation can be represented in either an analog or symbolic manner and recent evidence now suggests that analog and symbolic representation of quantities interact. Nonetheless, those two representational forms of quantities may be enhanced by convergent multisensory information. Here, we elucidate those interactions using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) and an audiovisual oddball paradigm. Participants were presented simultaneous audiovisual tokens in which the co-varying pitch of tones was combined with the embedded cardinality of dot patterns. Incongruencies were elicited independently from symbolic and non-symbolic modality within the audio-visual percept, violating the newly acquired rule that “the higher the pitch of the tone, the larger the cardinality of the figure.” The effect of neural plasticity in symbolic and non-symbolic numerical representations of quantities was investigated through a cross-sectional design, comparing musicians to musically naïve controls. Individual’s cortical activity was reconstructed and statistically modeled for a predefined time-window of the evoked response (130–170 ms). To summarize, we show that symbolic and non-symbolic processing of magnitudes is re-organized in cortical space, with professional musicians showing altered activity in motor and temporal areas. Thus, we argue that the symbolic representation of quantities is altered through musical training.

In this article, the authors analyze the changes in civil procedural legislation. The research featured the issues of qualification for legal representatives in all categories of cases, with the exception of cases considered by magistrates and district courts. The study was based on the provisions of the Administrative Procedure Code of the Russian Federation, which initially provided no exceptions for this rule. The authors believe that the expansion of the sphere of professional representation requires an analysis of these amendments and existing regulations on professional representation from the point of view of constitutional right to judicial protection and the right to receive qualified legal assistance. A certificate of higher legal education or an academic degree in a legal specialty does not always indicate the level of professionalism. A professional representative should also have positive practical experience, as well as strive for professional development. The authors assessed the classification of cases that require a professional representative. In this article, they criticize the current monopoly of lawyers on representation in civil court and argue the uselessness of establishing the education and qualification of a representative in its current form. The professionalization of the institution of legal professional representation is possible only under the conditions of the evolutionary development of procedural relations and the imperative consolidation of the rules of a competitive professional process.

Individuals with disabilities are affected by their environment in different ways, and one important factor involves how these individuals are perceived by others. This article focuses on rehabilitation professionals and the social representations of people with learning disability or autism spectrum disorder, as this group’s life situation is largely influenced by the professionals who work with them in their everyday lives. An association study, which is an established method in the theory of social representations, was carried out to gain more insight; in total, 121 rehabilitation professionals were included in the study. The results indicate that, when thinking about the target group, the respondents often associated the individuals in the group with work and the working process. A relational representation emerges where the individual is not perceived as someone with independent agency but rather as a person whose characterization is assigned in relation to the work tasks. Despite this, the respondents were sympathetic to the individuals and this work. The study also shows that the professionals’ social representations of the target group differs depending on what organization they belong to and that the various denominations of the individuals used in the organizations are not appreciated by the professionals.

- Pain is a symptom often associated with disease, but several studies indicate that hospital pain management continues to be inadequate. This fact seems to depend on representations of the problem and professional practices which are not likely to change. The purpose of this qualitative study, conducted in two hospitals in the north of Italy, is to analyze pain representations held by doctors, and their implications with respect to the practices adopted in assessment and treatment of pain. The results - expressed by the interviewees - indicate three meanings connected to different professional practices: pain is represented as a clinical cue, as a request for help and for attention and as a symptom to be treated. Collaborative writing tools have been used widely in professional and academic organizations for many years. Yet, there has not been much work to improve screen reader access in mainstream collaborative writing tools. This severely affects the way people with vision impairments collaborate in ability-diverse teams. As a step toward addressing this issue, the present article aims at improving screen reader representation of collaborative features such as comments and track changes (i.e., suggested edits). Building on our formative interviews with 20 academics and professionals with vision impairments, we developed auditory representations that indicate comments and edits using non-speech audio (e.g., earcons, tone overlay), multiple text-to-speech voices, and contextual presentation techniques. We then performed a systematic evaluation study with 48 screen reader users that indicated that non-speech audio, changing voices, and contextual presentation can potentially improve writers’ collaboration awareness. We discuss implications of these results for the design of accessible collaborative systems.

It utilizes several data sources that permit estimates of the number of employees in 1978 who met the complex legal criteria for representation in professional units, and it also analyzes data on NLRB election results for 1973–79. Objective: to analyze the constitutive contents of the social representations of suicide by health professionals in the emergency department through an analysis of the cognitive network. Method: study based on the Theory of Social Representations carried out with 104 emergency room professionals from a hospital in Bahia, Brazil. A free word association task was conducted using the term suicide enabling the creation of a semantic network that was analyzed using the Cognitive Network Analysis model. Results: this network was composed of 42 vertices (i.e., words evoked by the professionals) and 273 edges (i.e., connections between words), with a mean degree of 13. The representational structure was formed by four dimensions (biological, affective-psychological, social, and religious) that explained the interface between the primary (i.e., central core) terms “despair,” “depression,” “disease,” “sadness,” “death,” “absence of God,” and “family fragility” and the secondary (i.e., periphery) terms “loneliness,” “lack of love,” “weakness,” “emotional distress,” “frustration,” “conflict,” “solution,” “mistake,” “fear,” “non-acceptance,” “anxiety,” “lack of control,” and “kill.” Conclusion: despite the presence of reductionist aspects, the representational structure created by the healthcare professionals of the investigated hospital conveyed the meaning and image of suicide across its multidimensional aspects, favoringchanges in individual and collective practices ...

The development of professional identity starts with childhood. In adolescence, individuals should have appropriate resources to make choices; high levels of self-efficacy and professional curiosity, as well as better representations of the concept of work and decent work, could support adolescents in their planning of the future. For this reason, we developed a training aimed at providing adolescents with resources of professional curiosity and self-efficacy, which would also increase their representation of the concepts of work and decent work. A longitudinal study compared a control group (n = 80) with an experimental group (n = 80). The second group participated in mainly qualitative career counseling activities and showed an improvement in the levels of professional curiosity and self-efficacy; moreover, after the training, the experimental group showed a better representation of work and decent work. Consequently, the training managed to improve the dimensions set out above. The results show that career counseling activities can help increase adolescent resources and increase their chances of finding a qualitatively good job.

Aims:A growing body of scientific literature emphasizes a strong linkage between HIV/Aids and serious mental illness. In the Italian context, specialized services for combined management of dual diagnosis are increasingly requested, and healthcare professionals (HPWs) have to face up the difficulty emerging by this new situation. To bridge these gaps, the present study aimed at studying the representations of dual diagnosis, analyzing HPWs’ experiences from their own perspectives, in order to understand their difficulty and create future good practices in healthcare services.Method:A quali-quantitative study was conducted with a multidisciplinary sample of professionals (N=91), drawn by HIV/Aids and Mental Health sites. Due to the exploratory nature of the research, data were collected from semi-structured interviews: HPWs were asked about their work experiences with HIV/Aids and Mental Illness. The interviews were fully audio-taped and verbatim transcribed. A computer-aided lexical correspondence analysis was conducted by a dedicated text-analysis software.Results:Data analysis showed out two main factorial dimensions: the first regarding the representation of the “Management of dual diagnosis within Health Services”, and the second one referring to the “categorization of HIV/Aids-Mental Illness co-morbidity”. Furthermore, four different Representational Conceptions were highlighted, corresponding to as many different ways HPWs use to represent/depict the aims of Health Service in relation to HIV/Aids-Mental Illness co-morbidity.Conclusion:This study reveals that socio-cultural meanings of dual diagnosis are not fixed; rather, they are ongoing co-constructed within the activities carried out by the HPWs involved in their specific health contexts in the exercise of their profession.

Background The involvement of service user representatives in planning, delivering, and evaluating health care services is regarded as essential in Healthy Life Centres (HLCs) to ensure high-quality services. However, information on how HLC-professionals involve service user representatives at a healthcare organizational level at HLCs remains sparse. Objective To explore HLC professionals’ experiences involving service user representatives in planning, delivering, and evaluating the HLC services. Methods Five qualitative semi-structured focus group interviews with 27 health professionals from 27 Norwegian HLCs were conducted. Data were analysed using systematic text condensation. Results The involvement of service user representatives at the HLCs varied from well-integrated and systematized to the opposite. The professionals’ primary rationale for involving service user representatives was to include the representatives’ unique experiential knowledge to ensure the quality of the service. Experiential knowledge was seen as a ‘different’ competence, which came in addition to professional competence. The professionals’ choice of service user representatives depended on the purpose behind the involvement initiative. The HLC professionals often hand-picked former service users according to their health problems, motivation, and the HLC’s need. The professionals said they were responsible for initiating the facilitation to accomplish genuine involvement. Support from their leaders to prioritize these tasks was essential. Conclusion To meet the demand for adequate service user representatives, the HLCs need access to different service user representatives, representing both diagnose-based and generic service user organisations and the public. To achieve genuine involvement, the rationale behind the involvement and the representatives’ role must be clarified, both for the HLC professionals and service user representatives. This will require resources for continuous organizational preparation and facilitation.

We investigate the development problem of professional representation in the arbitration proceedings of the Russian Federation. We believe that the professional representatives participation in the arbitration process has a very positive impact on the efficiency and quality of proceedings which is carrying out by the arbitration courts. It is stated that the need for professional representatives is primarily due to the special (economic) nature of disputes considered by arbitration courts, the participation in which persons who do not have the appropriate education and knowledge, on the one hand, as a rule, does not contribute to the effective protection of their rights, on the other – delays the consideration of cases. Thus, the Arbitration procedure code of the Russian Federation will be amended in autumn 2019, concerning the requirement of compulsory higher legal education for representatives of the parties in civil and arbitration cases. The amendments provide that in addition to lawyers, they can only be persons with a higher legal education or a degree in law. The exception is cases subject to consideration by magistrates or district courts. It is concluded that the presence of higher legal education in the near future becomes a mandatory requirement for representatives in disputes considered by the arbitration courts of the Russian Federation.

This article brings the neglected topic of small professional unions into the women and unions literature. In addition to an overview of women’s representation and gender equality strategies in small professional UK unions, it offers a contextually grounded analysis of barriers and enablers of women’s participation in Napo – the union representing professional workers in the probation service. The article identifies several enablers: healthy levels of women’s representation over a long period of time; presence and longevity of gender equality strategies; a strong occupational identity; occupational values that complement those of unionism. However, a highly pressured work environment and hostile industrial relations climate create lived insecurities, work–life imbalance and time poverty, which have constrained women professionals’ union participation.

Abstract Little is known about the motives of lawyers who provide free legal assistance in countries that lack both a developed professional community and developed institutions related to the rule of law. Based on a survey of 3,317 criminal defense lawyers (advokaty) in 35 regions of Russia, we analyze the provision of two types of free legal services: participation in legal proceedings “on appointment” (po naznacheniyu) and the provision of pro bono legal assistance. We show that work on appointment usually involves lawyers with low social capital and a lack of regular clients. In contrast, pro bono legal assistance is encouraged by lawyers’ organizations. It is typically provided by professionals with a high level of social capital and with values aimed at maintaining an excellent professional reputation. We conclude that the provision of free legal services might best be stimulated within the professional community rather than by the government.

The paper deals with the structural analysis of self-representations of cosmonauts who have finished their flight careers. Self-representation is a central formation of ego-consciousness while profession and family are two important spheres of the human realization and formation, line of development. The authors consider how veteran cosmonauts represent their families and professional selves, and place of career and family in their lives in context of the theories of activities (A.N. Leontiev) and self-determination (E. Deci, P. Ryan). We analyzed self-representations of 15 veterans enrolled in the corps of cosmonauts in 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. According to our data, different decades mark individual epochs, each with own social-historical context. Cosmonauts in these groups differ in perception of career success, family history, attitude to the life and personal mission at large. Work and family are unequal in their «weight» within the self-representation or self-consciousness structure.

Background/Context This study investigates how people are prepared for professional practice in the clergy, teaching, and clinical psychology. The work is located within research on professional education, and research on the teaching and learning of practice. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study The purpose of the study is to develop a framework to describe and analyze the teaching of practice in professional education programs, specifically preparation for relational practices. Setting The research took place in eight professional education programs located in seminaries, schools of professional psychology, and universities across the country. Population/Participants/Subjects Our research participants include faculty members, students, and administrators at each of these eight programs. Research Design This research is a comparative case study of professional education across three different professions—the clergy, clinical psychology, and teaching. Our data include qualitative case studies of eight preparation programs: two teacher education programs, three seminaries, and three clinical psychology programs. Data Collection and Analysis For each institution, we conducted site visits that included interviews with administrators, faculty, and staff; observations of multiple classes and field-work; and focus groups with students who were either at the midpoint or at the end of their programs. Conclusions/Recommendations We have identified three key concepts for understanding the pedagogies of practice in professional education: representations, decomposition, and approximations of practice. Representations of practice comprise the different ways that practice is represented in professional education and what these various representations make visible to novices. Decomposition of practice involves breaking down practice into its constituent parts for the purposes of teaching and learning. Approximations of practice refer to opportunities to engage in practices that are more or less proximal to the practices of a profession. In this article, we define and provide examples of the representation, decomposition, and approximation of practice from our study of professional education in the clergy, clinical psychology, and teaching. We conclude that, in the program we studied, prospective teachers have fewer opportunities to engage in approximations that focus on contingent, interactive practice than do novices in the other two professions we studied.

This paper is based on the results of a random sample survey of the adult population of Britain. The survey was designed to explore public interest in, attitudes towards and understanding of science. The paper operationalizes the notion of scientific understanding, and applies the understanding measure in the analysis of social representations of science. The results suggest: first, that a so-called `deficit model' of public understanding of science is useful for certain well-defined analytical purposes; second, that there are significant differences between professional and popular representations of science, and third, that medical science may be paradigmatic for the popular representation of science in Britain.
