The professional status of interpreters is perhaps one of the most neglected topics in Interpreting Studies today. A review of the existing literature reveals that very few studies have investigated the status and the social prestige of the interpreting profession. One of the few attempts to study the status of conference interpreters empirically can be found in the study by Dam and Zethsen (2013), who compared EU staff interpreters’ and translators’ self-perception of status. The results of their survey showed that interpreters did not appear to have a high consideration of their profession, an outcome which begged for further research. As far as public service interpreters are concerned, several scholars (Angelelli 2004; Ricoy et al. 2009; De Pedro Ricoy 2010; Sela-Sheffy & Shlesinger 2011) have speculated that their status is generally low and that public service interpreting is still undergoing professionalisation, although these assumptions have never been empirically and extensively investigated. This doctoral thesis aims to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the self-perceived professional status of conference and public service interpreters. The theoretical framework hinges on the theories of the Sociology of the Professions (Andersen, Taylor & Logio 2014), which contributed to framing the concepts of status, prestige and profession; one of the main objectives of the present work is to determine whether interpreting can be regarded as a fully-fledged profession and, if so, on the basis of which sociological parameters. Almost one century after the birth of interpreting seen as a profession, what is the state of the art of the professionalisation process? What role do technology, the mass media, economic and social changes play in the sociological evolution of the interpreter’s professional status? What are the main challenges for the future generations of interpreters? At methodological level, the study is based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of questionnaires. Quantitative data on the interpreters’ self-perception of status were collected through the distribution of two surveys (one addressed to conference and one to public service interpreters), which gathered 1693 responses worldwide. The two questionnaires showed that a growing feminisation, rapid technological changes, the increasing use of English as a lingua franca and a complex labour market have influenced the way in which interpreters perceive the profession. Hence, the self-perceived status of conference and public service interpreters appears to be fraught with contradictions. On a brighter note, an increasing awareness of the social function fulfilled by the interpreting profession appears to be the driving force which motivates interpreters to follow the path towards full professionalisation.

Beginning with a discussion of the extant theories of professionalization, it then looks at civil military relations and its relationship to the international situation in general. The deployment of the line infantry at home and abroad is then analysed. Finally, the organisational changes made to produce professional structures for education, remuneration and promotion are discussed.

In order to effectively teach students how to critically consume media it is paramount for teachers to be media literate (Ian & Temur, 2012; Keller-Raber, 1995; Schmidt, 2012). Using Freirean critical literacy as a theoretical framework, this case study investigated how a 60-hour teacher training program in media literacy promoting Catholic Social Teaching and how undergoing this training has influenced teachers’ perceptions of media literacy, Catholic Social Teaching, and the link between the two. As the researcher, I performed participant-observation as a trainee in the program. Five teachers, alumni of the program, participated in this study: one middle school teacher, three high-school teachers, and one college professor, all of them taught at Christian private schools. I recorded how participants applied the Media Mindfulness—a faith based media literacy strategy—in their practice as a response to the Church’s call for Catholic teachers to engage in media education (Benedict XVI, 2008; John Paul II, 1987, 1990, 1992, 2005). Findings show how the Media Mindfulness method helped teachers integrate media literacy in their practice, promoting student empowerment and character education. A follow up action research at a Catholic high school where teachers are trained in Media Mindfulness is recommended to find out: a) how the training influenced teachers’ confidence in integrating media education into their practice? b) to what extent students’ assimilation of Catholic Social Teaching concepts resulted from the teacher training program? c) and how training teachers in the media mindfulness model influenced the school’s culture in addressing social justice issues?

The potential for decline in acutely ill and injured patients is ever-present. Rapid response systems exist to facilitate timely actions, but there are continued concerns over failure to rescue. Currently there is little understanding of what happens in ward areas when deterioration occurs and how it is recognised and managed. This study aimed to explore what happens when patients deteriorate, how professionals work together, define and communicate deterioration and make sense of what they say and do. Using constructivist grounded theory; data was gathered over 12 months from 33 multi-professional participants on three wards in one hospital. Data analysis, concurrent with collection, utilised theoretical sampling to identify further sources of data. Constant comparison was used to develop codes and concepts from the transcripts, and NVivo© software facilitated data organisation and an audit-trail. During 26 interviews and 48 hours of observation, 85 cases of patient deterioration were identified. Four concepts emerged from the analysis, 1) being vigilant through surveillance, 2) identifying deterioration and recognising urgency, 3) taking action by escalating and responding, 4) taking action by treating, all connected by a core concept, making the link. The need for support, use of subjective and objective indicators, competing priorities and hierarchical issues influenced the process but application of knowledge was crucial for making the link. Collectively knowing the patient and sharing this multi-professional knowledge was key to making the link and the nurse was ideally placed to facilitate a shared mental model of deterioration across the team. New elements were identified: lay person vigilance, where significant others contributed to the rescue process; and fear of harming patients by a rescue intervention was revealed as a barrier to treating deterioration. Recommendations included protecting and prioritising resources for surveillance, valuing subjectivity and the input of all levels of staff.

My thesis explores the figure of the black physician in a series of African American literary works published between the 1890s and the early 1930s, a period marked by the rise of a middle-class profession among African Americans, but also by the consolidation of racism and segregation in the United States. The literary works I have selected all focus on the contradiction embodied by the black physician: by mastering a prestigious, ‘white’ form of knowledge which justified the biological inferiority of black people, this character was the very evidence of the pseudoscientific nature of racist assumptions. My dissertation is divided into five chapters. In the first two chapters, I offer an analysis of the socio-historical context that saw the birth of the black medical professional, with a focus on the influence that Booker T. Washington’s and W.E.B Du Bois’ theories of education and social uplift had on aspiring black doctors. Chapter three investigates the uses of the character of the black physician in African American late 19 th - and early 20 th - century fiction. In chapters four and five, I analyze two different sets of novels: those in which this figure is portrayed as an ideal leader for his community, and those in which he is depicted as a victim that reveals the brutality of the country’s racism and oppression.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study stems from an urgent need to understand which factors contribute to nurse practitioners’ intention to quit, and consequently what organisations can do to retain these practitioners. There is increased pressure on the healthcare sector, more specifically nursing, due to a severe shortage in this discipline. These shortages are not an isolated phenomenon, but influence the private as well as public sector worldwide, as well as in South Africa. A multitude of factors contribute to the fact that nursing is a scarce skill worldwide. Some factors are controllable, others not. By isolating the controllable factors, organisations and managers can be equipped to put action plans in place to decrease the impact of this crisis. Processes and action plans to enlarge the nursing pool, and also to retain the current workforce, can contribute to overcoming this challenge. There is proof that the implementation of a structured talent management programme can contribute to overcoming this challenge. Line managers and their competence regarding the management of personnel play a key role in such a talent management programme. This study has as its objective to re-evaluate an existing talent management competency model for line managers, and to propose additional variables that can influence organisational outcomes like job satisfaction, organisational commitment and turnover intention. By understanding which line manager competencies influence organisational outcomes, and the manner in which they influence these outcomes, line managers as well as organisations can be equipped to formulate processes and programmes that can contribute to the retention of a scarce skill, and importantly, also minimise the impact of a worldwide crisis. The results of the study indicated that the operationalisation of the talent management competencies failed. The originally proposed model consequently had to be reduced by deleting all talent management latent variables from the model. Poor model fit was obtained for the reduced model. Modifications were, however, made to the reduced model based on modification index suggestions derived from the data. The modified model showed good fit and support was obtained for all the paths in the modified model. Crossvalidation of the modified model was recommended.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie spruit uit ‘n dringende behoefte om te verstaan watter faktore daartoe bydra dat verpleegkundiges die voorneme ontwikkel om ‘n organisasie te verlaat, en gevolglik wat organisasies kan doen om verpleegkundiges wel te behou. Toenemende druk word in die gesondheidsorgsektor ervaar, meer spesifiek op verpleging, weens ernstige tekorte in hierdie dissipline. Hierdie tekorte is nie ‘n geïsoleerde verskynsel nie, maar raak die privaatsektor sowel as die publieke sektor wêreldwyd, sowel as Suid-Afrika. ‘n Veelvoud van faktore dra daartoe by dat verpleegkunde ‘n skaars vaardigheid wêreldwyd is. Sekere faktore is beheerbaar, ander nie. Deur die beheerbare faktore te isoleer, kan organisasies en bestuurders aksieplanne in plek stel om die impak van hierdie krisis te verminder. Prosesse en aksieplanne om byvoorbeeld die verplegingpoel te vergroot, en ook om die huidige werksmag te behou, kan bydra tot die oorbrugging van hierdie uitdaging. Daar is bewyse dat die implementering van ‘n gestruktureerde talentbestuurprogram kan bydra om hierdie uitdaging te oorkom. ‘n Sleutelrol in so ‘n talentbestuurprogram, is die lynbestuurder en sy/haar bevoegdheid ten opsigte van die bestuur van personeel. Hierdie studie het ten doel om ‘n bestaande talentbestuurmodel vir lynbestuurders te her-evalueer en addisionele veranderlikes voor te stel wat organisasie-uitkomste soos werkstevredenheid, organisasie-verbondenheid en voorneme om te bedank beïnvloed. Deur te verstaan watter lynbestuurbevoegdhede organisasie-uitkomste beïnvloed en die wyse waarop hierdie bevoegdhede op hierdie uitkomste inwerk, kan lynbestuurders, sowel as organisasies, toegerus word om prosesse en programme te formuleer. Hierdie programme kan ‘n bydra lewer tot die behoud van ‘n skaars vaardigheid, en sodoende die impak van ‘n wêreldwye krisis minimaliseer. Die resultate van die studie het aangetoon dat die operasionalisering van die talentbestuurbevoegdhede onsuksesvol was. Die oorspronklik voorgestelde model moes gevolglik gereduseer word deur die talentbestuur-latente veranderlikes uit die model te verwyder. Swak modelpassing is vir die gereduseerde model bevind. Wysigings is egter aan die gereduseerde model aangebring gebaseer op modifikasie-indeksvoorstelle afgelei uit die data. Die gewysigde model het goeie passing getoon en steun is vir al die bane in die gewysigde model gevind. Kruisvalidasie van die gewysigde gereduseerde model is aanbeveel.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the student-teacher bonds nowadays and it was held with a reflection group made up of university students. The interest for this survey came from the researcher s know-how as a professor and her noticing the interference of these bonds in the students lives, personal identification, individual choices, and professional goals. In other words, this work deals about the psychological phenomena that permeate the student-teacher relationship, as well as its influence in the students lives. The participants, whose ages vary from 20 to 40, are sophomore pedagogy graduation students at a university in the state of S?o Paulo. For the development of this study, the Reflection Group technique was used, as well as the theoretical reference point of the Psycho-dynamic Psychology and of the Group Psychotherapies with an Analytical support. A qualitative analysis was carried out, which disclosed the psychological phenomena that percolate the student- teacher interchange. The participants looked back into their past and their first relations with both their parents and their teachers, in order to understand the established bonds with their present professors. The group experience revealed not only the expression but also the form in which the bonds are established both through the eye and the students understanding. Despite all the changes that have occured in the communication and relationship fields, it showed that the teacher still ranks high in the students pychological world, wich determines the links in the present time.
Este trabalho objetivou investigar a qualidade dos v?nculos aluno-professor na atualidade, a partir de um Grupo de Reflex?o de estudantes universit?rios. O interesse por este estudo surgiu a partir da pr?tica do pesquisador como docente e em sua observ?ncia da interfer?ncia dos v?nculos como geradores de identifica??es, escolhas pessoais e profissionais dos alunos, ou seja, os fen?menos ps?quicos que permeiam esta rela??o e as interfer?ncias na vida do aluno. Os participantes s?o estudantes de uma faculdades no interior do Estado de S?o Paulo, do segundo ano do curso de gradua??o em Pedagogia, cuja idade varia de 20 ? 40 anos. Para desenvolvimento do estudo foi utilizada a t?cnica dos Grupos de Reflex?o e o referencial te?rico da Psicologia Psicodin?mica e das Psicoterapias de Grupo com base Anal?tica. Foi realizada an?lise qualitativa que revelou os fen?menos ps?quicos que permeiam o v?nculo aluno-professor. Os participantes fizeram uma busca ao passado nas suas primeiras rela??es com os pais e primeiros professores, para compreenderem as rela??es estabelecidas com os professores na atualidade. A viv?ncia em grupo possibilitou a express?o e elabora??o da forma que se estabelecem os v?nculos pelo olhar e compreens?o dos alunos. Mostraram que com tantas mudan?as no campo da comunica??o e das rela??es, h? um lugar em que o professor ? colocado no mundo ps?quico dos alunos que determina os v?nculos no presente.

Les commerçants de marché sont des inconnus de la sociologie. Le marché urbain a pourtant une existence multi-séculaire, et cette longue histoire a structuré les usages du groupe des commerçants de marché. Au delà de cette inscription longue dans l'histoire, le marché urbain a surtout su changer de fonction principale sans abandonner celle qui l'a fait naître. Ainsi cette thèse a-t-elle un double objectif. En premier lieu elle vise à dresser un tableau du marché et de ses acteurs, afin de comprendre comment un groupe professionnel confronté à l'instabilité de son installation et de ses contours peut malgré tout constituer un territoire et le défendre. En second lieu elle se penche sur les raisons qui font que l'institution du marché urbain se maintient dans un économie aux caractéristiques antinomiques des siennes. A cet égard la production de confiance est déterminante. Il apparaît que si le marché urbain se maintient c'est à travers la confiance qu'il génère, et dont il synthétise de façon exemplaire les différentes dimensions
Urban market sellers have been quite unknown by sociology. However, a long history has structured through centuries their uses and their culture. Beyond this legacy, urban markets managed to change their main function, while keeping their original one.This research is seeking a double aim. First of all it intends to depict an accurate description of urban market and its sellers. Then we can find out how a group that has to deal with global unstability manages to build and rule a territory. Second, the point is to understand why such a micro-local kind of merchant deals succeeds in still standing in a world that is more and more globalizing. Trust seems to be the key to catch it. Urban markets do aggregate the various ways of trust, hence they are still standing and produce social ties

La profession vétérinaire est née en France en 1761 à l'initiative du roi Louis XV. Elle assure deux missions essentielles: celle de donner des soins aux animaux et celle de préserver la santé des hommes. -La première partie de la thèse est consacrée à la profession vétérinaire et à la santé animale. Elle s'organise en trois titres traitant successivement des droits fondamentaux de la profession vétérinaire, du cadre ordinal et déontologique de l'exercice de la médecine et de la chirurgie des animaux et des modalités de l'exercice professionnel libéral, y associant les nouvelles orientations et dispositions relatives aux obligations et responsabilités médicales. -La seconde partie de la thèse analyse la profession vétérinaire et la santé humaine. Dans ce domaine particulier où la santé des animaux rejoint et conditionne très directement la santé des hommes, les vétérinaires n'interviennent plus à titre libéral, mais en tant qu'agents publics. Les trois domaines fondamentaux de la Santé publique vétérinaire sont étudiés s'agissant respectivement de la législation sanitaire vétérinaire, de l'inspection sanitaire et qualitative des denrées animales et d'origine animale et de la protection et du bien-être des animaux. -Dans ses différentes composantes, le droit qui organise et régit la profession vétérinaire apparaît comme un droit original, moderne et pragmatique. Se déduisant de la connaissance de l'épidémiologie des maladies animales, des zoonoses et des facteurs de santé, la médecine vétérinaire et le droit forment un ensemble remarquable de cohérence et d'efficacité.

L’objet de cette recherche est d’explorer le travail psychique mobilisé dans l’apprentissage du care chez un sujet-apprenant d’un métier du lien, avec l’hypothèse d’un entremêlement entre rapport au savoir et apprentissage. Sujet intemporel d’actualité et enjeu sociétal, le care a fait l’objet de nombreuses théorisations présentant cependant des divergences, à la fois au niveau de sa définition et de ses attributs que de son processus. Une recherche méthodique francophone scientifique à partir de Cairn sur le prendre soin et le care entre 2015 et 2020 étaye le cadre théorique et termine la première partie. En outre, la production de savoirs renvoyant à l’idée d’une relation à un « objet savoir » en tant qu’objet de satisfaction et de plaisir (Mosconi, 1996), il est montré dans la deuxième partie de l’état des lieux de la littérature, comment le rapport au savoir peut induire des formes particulières d’apprentissage et de construction de savoirs qui, en retour modifient le rapport au savoir. Questionnant son rapport à l’objet de recherche, l’auteure soignante-chercheure inscrit ce travail dans une approche clinique d’orientation psychanalytique. Quinze entretiens non-directifs réalisés en visio-conférence en France d’apprenants auxiliaires médicaux ou en travail social, de niveau de formation et de territoire différents, ainsi que de néoprofessionnels, sont étudiés à l’aide d’une analyse thématique puis lexicale, cette dernière étant effectuée par le logiciel TXM (Heiden et al, 2010). L’entre-deux de la rencontre (Thouroude, 2022) avec des personnes dépendantes, vulnérables, isolées, suppose, de la part du sujet-apprenant, un travail psychique intérieur consistant à reconnaitre ses propres peurs, ses propres blessures, oser les partager, et (res) sentir comment évoluer à travers elles. Résister à la tentation d’emprise sur l’autre est également un aspect mis en lumière dans les résultats, ce travail sur soi devant être réalisé en permanence par le futur professionnel de la relation. Le rapport au savoir reste omniprésent dans les discours des étudiants empruntant de multiples formes, mais en orientant l’ensemble des activités psychiques du sujet-apprenant de façon à atteindre le plaisir ou la satisfaction. Un entre-deux du care comme passage évoquant l’idée, au sens psychanalytique, d’un espace symbolique, d’un écart, d’une tension maintenue entre conscient et inconscient, résulte de l’analyse du contenu, cet espace reposant sur trois capacités s’articulant autour de quatre axes et quatre effets. En conclusion, une définition de cet espace, lieu de transaction et de médiation, est avancée et des propositions pour sa prise en compte dans la formation des apprenants de métiers du lien à la rencontre avec l’altérité, sont formulées
The purpose of this research is to explore the psychic work mobilized in the learning of care in a subject-learner of a link profession, with the hypothesis of an interconnecting relationship between knowledge and learning. A timeless subject of current interest and a societal issue, care has been and still is the subject of numerous theories, but views differ on its definition, its attributes and its process. A scientific francophone methodical research from Cairn on care between 2015 and 2020 supports the theoretical framework and concludes this first part. Furthermore, as the production of knowledge refers to the idea of a relationship to a "knowledge object" as an object of satisfaction and pleasure (Mosconi, 1996), the second part of the literature review shows how the relationship to knowledge can induce particular forms of learning and knowledge construction which, in turn, modify the relationship to knowledge.Questioning her relationship to the research object, the author, a nurse-researcher, inscribes this work in a clinical approach of psychoanalytical orientation. Fifteen unstructured interviews conducted by videoconference in France, with medical auxiliaries or social work learners of different levels of training and territories, as well as neo-professionals, are studied using a thematic and then lexical analysis, the latter being carried out by TXM software (Heiden et al, 2010).The in-between encounter (Thouroude, 2022) with dependent, vulnerable, isolated people, supposes, on the part of the subject-learner, an inner psychic work consisting in recognizing his own fears, his own wounds, daring to share them, and feeling how to evolve through them. Resisting the temptation to have too much hold on the other person is also an aspect highlighted in the results, and this work on oneself must be carried out continuously by the future relationship professional. The relationship to knowledge remains omnipresent in the students' discourses, taking many forms, but orienting all the psychic activities of the subject-learner in such a way as to achieve pleasure or satisfaction. An in-between of care as a passage evoking the idea, in the psychoanalytical sense, of a symbolic space, a gap, a tension maintained between conscious and unconscious, results from the analysis of the content, this space consisting of three capacities constructed around four axes and four effects. In conclusion, a definition of this space, a place of transaction and mediation, is put forward and proposals are formulated for its consideration in the training of learners of link professions to the encounter with otherness

This thesis investigates the emergence of a new specialisation within the profession of architecture, namely that of the architectural technologist. The main original contributions from the research concern a deep understanding of how that emergence has been realised, and a study of the implications for buildings in the longer term. Using the UK and Denmark as examples it finds that this profession has existed for a long time, but until recently without formal recognition. It also finds that the consequences of the lack of attention are potentially major, and it suggests why recognition came so late. By researching literature the history of the building and architecture industries was investigated and it is shown how the architects were cooperating with well-trained craftsmen for many centuries. This is compared with the kind of cooperation with architectural technologists going on today, and what will most likely occur in the future. Questionnaires, to provide data about current architectural and architectural technologist education, were sent to groups of newly graduated professionals. After statistical treatment the resulting quantitative data were thoroughly analysed by discussing the possible interpretations. Focus groups of highly qualified professionals also interpreted the data and insights into the needs of industry in both the UK and Denmark were provided. Finally, the thesis concludes by identifying necessary means of improvement, and points at the serious risk of a further division of the construction industry into more consulting companies. This increases the risk of future architecture failing to properly integrate technology and design.

Bakgrund: Idag är det brist på operationssjuksjuksköterskor i Sverige, vilket har resulterat i att flera operationsavdelningar är förhindrade att bedriva full operationsverksamhet. Erfarna operationssjuksköterskor går i pension under de närmsta åren samtidigt som intresset att utbilda sig till operationssjuksköterska varit svagt. Bristen på behöriga operationssjuksköterskor kan förvärras om inte åtgärder görs, vilket kan få svåra konsekvenser som att antalet operationer måste reduceras ytterligare eller ställas in vilket skulle bidra till ett lidande för patienten samt en ökad arbetsbelastning på den befintliga personalen. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva grundutbildade sjuksköterskors uppfattningar om operationssjuksköterskans profession. Metod: En kvalitativ studie med en fenomenografisk ansats utfördes. Ett strategiskt urval genomfördes, vilket resulterade i nio individuella intervjuer med grundutbildade sjuksköterskor på ett sjukhus i södra Sverige. Resultat: Analysen resulterade i fyra kategorier: En intresseväckande profession, En krävande profession, En teknisk profession och En osynlig profession. Var och en av kategorierna bestod av två underkategorier. Slutsats: Grundutbildade sjuksköterskor har otillräcklig kunskap och kännedom om operationssjuksköterskans profession. Ökad klinisk erfarenhet och information om operationssjuksköterskans profession skulle kunna skapa ett ökat intresse eller underlätta i valet om en framtida operationssjuksköterskeutbildning.
Background: Today is a shortage of operating theater nurse in Sweden, which has resulted in several operational departments are unable to engage fully operational business. Experienced operating theater nurse will retire in the next few years while the interest to train as a operating theater nurse has been neglected. The lack of competent operating theater nurse may worsen if no measures implemented to change the situation, which can have serious consequences, such as the number of operations must be further reduced or canceled, which would contribute to the suffering of the patient and an increased workload on existing staff. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses perceptions of operating theater nurse profession. Method: A qualitative study with phenomenographically was performed. A strategic choice was conducted, which resulted in nine individual interviews nurses at a hospital in southern Sweden. Results: The analysis resulted in four categories: An interesting profession, A demanding profession, A technical profession and An invisible profession. Each of the categories consisted of two categories. Conclusion: Nurses have inadequate knowledge and understanding of operating theater nurse profession. Increased clinical experience and information about the operating theater nurse profession could create an increased interest in or facilitate the election of a future operating theater nurse education.

Specialpedagogik, Skolutveckling och ledarskap, Lärande och samhälle, Malmö högskola.BakgrundDet finns elever som har svårt att passa inom ramarna för skolans verksamhet och där skolan behöver tänka kring hur de ska inkluderas. Det handlar bl.a. om de elever som ofta beskrivs av lärare som störande, bråkiga, oroliga och okoncentrerade och i pedagogisk litteratur som elever i socioemotionella svårigheter, elever i psykosociala svårigheter eller elever med beteendeproblem. Nordin-Hultman (2004) menar att det på senare år uppfattas vara allt fler barn som har svårigheter med att klara av den vanliga undervisningen. En allt större andel barn uppvisar koncentrationssvårigheter, empatibrister och problem med det sociala samspelet. Behovet av extra resurser i skola och förskola anses öka. Larsson och Nilholm (2012) menar att en av skolans viktigaste uppgifter gäller hur man ska kunna möta denna elevgrupp. Förhoppningen med arbetet är att bidra med kunskap kring hur pedagoger och organisation kan arbeta med eleverna i relationssvårigheter. Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med examensarbetet är att belysa vilka framgångsfaktorer och fallgropar specialpedagoger ser i mötet med elever i relationssvårigheter. För att nå framgång med elever i relationssvårigheter behövs en fungerande relation och ett gott bemötande (Nordahl m.fl. 2007; Greene 2008; Hejlskov 2009; Larsson & Nilholm, 2012). I syfte att få hela skolan att kunna arbeta med eleverna krävs en omfattande förändring av tänkande och agerande, en så kallad förändring av andra ordningen (Ahrenfelt, 2012).MetodDet är en fenomenografisk studie där sex semistrukturerade intervjuer genomförts med specialpedagoger F-6. Specialpedagogerna fick ge sin bild av arbete med elever i relationssvårigheter och hur man kan nå framgång. Specialpedagogerna hittades i mitt nätverk. Analysen fokuserades på likheter och skillnader i specialpedagogernas bild av arbetet. ResultatI analysen av resultaten framkommer tre större teman: pedagogiska strategier, ramar och resurser samt ett professionsperspektiv. Specialpedagogerna betonar vikten av ett gott bemötande och menar att man som pedagog inte kommer någonvart om man inte har en relation till eleven. Elever i relationssvårigheter behöver också tydliga strukturer, rutiner och instruktioner så att de vet vad som förväntas och så att de kan förbereda sig på vad som komma skall. När det kommer till organisationen behöver skolledningen vara tydlig med hur man bemöter elever på skolan samt ge förutsättningar i form av organisering, fortbildning och handledning. Specialpedagogiska implikationerSpecialpedagogens roll blir att handleda pedagoger, att berätta för ledningen vilken fortbildning som behövs, samt vara en ambassadör för eleverna och se till att de får goda förutsättningar att lyckas. Min förhoppning är att studien ska ge kunskap om hur man kan möta eleverna och ge dem det stöd de behöver för att lyckas, samt att visa på vikten av att organisation ger rätt förutsättningar för lärarna i form av fortbildning, handledning och resurser. Kommunikationsbranschens olika grepp för att profilera sig som kreativa och professionella är många. Denna uppsats studerar fem stycken stockholmsbaserade kommunikationsbyråer som alla har kunder inom kreativa näringar. Tre av byråerna är fullservicebyråer med brett tjänsteutbud och två av byråerna är renodlade PR-byråer. Den här uppsatsen undersöker hur kommunikationsbyråer kommunicerar ut sin organisationskultur genom sina hemsidor. Fokus ligger i att undersöka hur organisationskulturen inom organisationen framställs och profilerar en specifik identitet. Då materialet består av byråernas hemsida analyseras det med hjälp av kvalitativ innehållsanalys och verktygen för semiotisk och retorisk analys. Att studera hur organisationskulturen marknadsförs resulterar i en studie av relationen mellan den interna och externa kommunikationen. Det valda teoretiska ramverket som uppsatsen utgår ifrån är organisationskultur, varumärkesstrategi, profession samt begreppen fält, habitus och kapital. Det undersökningen kommer fram till genom analys och diskussion är hur de fullservice kommunikationsbyråer med en större kreativ strävan använder sig av personliga egenskaper hos sina medarbetare i profileringen av sin organisation. De renodlade PR-byråerna använder sig av till stor del av hierarkiska system och visuella grepp från kunderna i sin marknadsföring. Genom att sammankoppla resultatet med teorier för integrerad kommunikation och hur managers strävar efter att framställa en integrerad organisationskultur blir framställningen av medarbetare väldigt homogen. Detta kan även leda till att kommunikationsbyråerna skapar ett visst habitus för medarbetarna. Detta innebär att det riskeras att skapa beteendemönster för medarbetarna.

The aim for this study is to explore how leisure-time pedagogues construct their profession through discussion in facebookgroups that are dedicated to leisure-time pedagogues and the pedagogy that they represent. The aim is fulfilled by performing a discourse analysis of the statements that leisure-time pedagogues make about their profession. Subsequently the statements are put through an analysis using the theoretical framework of this paper, which is social representation theory. The aim for the use of the theoretical framework is to identify the representation that the statements make about the leisure-time pedagogues profession and the meaning they give to them. The results show that the leisure-time pedagogues have trouble reaching consensus in the representations they make about their profession. It is therefore questioned if their occupation can be called a profession at all. It is meanwhile also concluded that leisure time pedagogues share a common knowledge base in child upbringing that forms a foundation in their profession. This is something that is contested in previous research in the field that this paper operates, which proclaims that leisure-time pedagogue’s profession is shattered and divided. The results show that it is more just to describe the profession consisting of a base with different branches.

Para finales del año 2016, hay 130 sedes de empresas multinacionales con sedes en ciudad de Panamá, este número se incrementa en un promedio de 13 empresas nuevas cada año, empleando alrededor de 5,500 empleados, lo que evidencia claramente un mercado que ha ido en constante expansión. A través de encuestas realizadas a más de 70 ejecutivos de estas empresas, se pudo constatar que la gran mayoría han hecho o desean hacer inversiones en bienes raíces en el país. Skolkuratorsfunktionen är idag en lagstadgad del av elevhälsan i den svenska skolan och ska tillsammans med de övriga professionerna arbeta med förebyggande och hälsofrämjande åtgärder. Syftet med denna studie var att analysera och beskriva skolkuratorns uppdrag i skolan utifrån skolkuratorns erfarna perspektiv. Frågeställningarna som utformades för att uppfylla syftet var hur skolkuratorn ser på sin funktion i skolan, hur skolkuratorn ser på sin yrkesroll samt hur skolkuratorn ser på sin arbetsbeskrivning. Studien är kvalitativ och är baserad på nio semistrukturerade intervjuer med yrkesutövande skolkuratorer. Intervjuerna har tolkats och analyserats utifrån en hermeneutisk ansats. Skolkuratorns profession och yrkesroll har sedan analyserats med hjälp av rollteori och professionsteori. Genom dessa val har denna studie kunnat fånga skolkuratorns erfarna uppfattning kring sin profession och sitt uppdrag. Denna uppfattning har sedan mynnat ut i studiens resultat, i att skolkuratorerna uppfattar sitt uppdrag som tolkningsbart och utan tydlig definition på vad uppdraget är. Yrkesrollen upplevs som otydlig av dem själva och av övriga professioner på skolan. Arbetsbeskrivningen har skolkuratorerna själva utformat vilket gör att yrket är personbundet och fritt. De slutsatser som dragits är att en tydligare ledning efterfrågas med bättre kunskap om skolkuratorns arbetsuppgifter och kompetens. Detta för att också möjliggöra mer insyn i arbetet och säkerställa rättigheten till samma skolkurativa hjälp för eleverna. Lång erfarenhet är en nyckelfaktor för att kunna hantera professionen som skolkurator. Studiens kunskapsbidrag utgörs av att den lyfter de funktioner kring skolkuratorns profession som behöver förändras och i många fall tydliggöras.

The dissertation consists of three studies examining three different regulatory issues that affect the auditing profession. The first study has two main foci. First, the study investigates the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) on the Big 4 fee premium. Second, the study investigates the relationship between the size of an audit client and annual fee change. The results show that in the post-SOX environment, clients of non-Big 4 firms have experienced greater increases in audit fees than the clients of the Big 4 firms, resulting in a diminishing Big 4 premium. This is consistent with the notion that non-Big 4 clients had to make significant adjustments to meet post-SOX quality requirements by increasing their effort (and consequently audit fees). The results also show audit firms' large clients experience the largest percentage increase in audit fees. This is consistent with the theoretical view of consumer surplus, where the large clients, with more resources, have greater levels of consumer surplus, which is being captured by the audit firms. The study contributes to our understanding of the impact of SOX on audit fee premium and the economics of audit market competition in different client segments. The second study is focused on three main areas: 1) the relationship between audit fees and audit market concentration on a country level; 2) the effect of a country's litigation regime on the relationship between audit fees and market concentration and 3) the inter-relations between competition, fees, and quality in the market for audit services. The study is motivated by the current debate in the United States and the European Union about the possible problems associated with the current oligopolistic structure of the audit market. The contribution of this study lies in the fact that it provides a multi-national empirical investigation of the audit competition-fee relationship, and examination of how country-level fees affect the competition-quality relationship, while controlling for country level factors. Results show a negative relationship between country-level market concentration and audit fees but only in highly litigious countries, suggesting that the firms are able to obtain economies of scale in more concentrated markets and are willing to pass savings down to their clients. However this relationship only holds for the clients of the Big N firms. Analysis of audit quality suggests that audit quality is higher in more concentrated markets but mediation analysis did not show that the fees mediate the relationship between audit quality and market concentration. The third study addresses current regulatory debate about the responsibility of the principal auditor in the group audit environment. Current United States standards allow the principal auditor to disavow responsibility for parts of the audit which were performed by a third party auditor by referencing them in the auditor's opinion and then indicating the part of the audit which was performed by them. This disclaimer of responsibility is prohibited under the international auditing standards, which require the principal auditor to be responsible for the entire group audit. Specifically, this study examines 1) audit quality implications related to such opinions, and 2) the relationship between having a shared opinion and audit fees. The results show that the audit quality is significantly lower for the firms whose audit opinion referenced a third party auditor. The results also provide some evidence that audit fees are lower in shared responsibility situations.

There are different kinds of marketing, for example public relations and exhibit marketing. Exhibit marketing is a part of the study of marketing and sales. A function studied under the heading of exhibit marketing is the trade show. It’s a marketing event that brings manufacturers, suppliers and related services from a given industry to a single location to exhibit products/services. People working at trade shows are called exhibit marketers. They have different tasks and different levels of engagement. This paper has the ambition to describe exhibit marketing as a profession and whether students would be able to work at a trade show and why. Data were collected with a survey with a sample of 234 students. The age distributions were overrepresented of people between the ages of 16 to 25. The survey shows that most students could imagine working at a trade show. Moreover the survey shows that it seems to be more common among females rather than among males. The three main reasons why students could imagine working at a trade show is because they like the customer contact, likes to have different tasks and think they are good sellers. There is evidence that the profession requires a lot of customer contact and different tasks. To sell is also a big part of the profession. Another finding is that the profession can be very stressful. Most students responded that they could work under stress.

This dissertation is an attempt to throw light on both the life and work of henri-pierre roche (1879-1959) who has remained a fairly unknown literary figure despite the film adaptation of his two novels. The first part of it turns our attention to the writer's busy life. He can mostly be seen as a man full of curiosity. Indeed he was curious about arts - mostly painting and sculpture - and got acquainted with the greatest artists of the first half of our century. He was also an intermediary between some artists - notably laurencin, duchamp, brancusi - and collectors - particulary in france, in the usa and in india. He was also curious about women and felt he has to experiment them all on the ground that they were different from each other. Finally he was curious about his own life too and most of his written work is devoted to it. The second part of this dissertation deals with roche's work with a view to revealing its own literary quality. With jules et jim, his most famous novel, he does not indulge in the typical cliches of passion, however superb a love story this may be. The originality of deux anglaises et le continent lies in its structure and its sources - that is diaries and letters. Finally, le journal, with its about 7000 pages is a singular witness of this life : it's almost entirely devoted to women

Background and problem: The audit profession have developed through the history as the auditor’s associations has becoming rule-making bodies. Auditors has become an even more important function, which leads to greater responsibility and more obligations. Auditors are seen as a profession, and in exchange for them to perform their work they need to be seen to act in the public interest, being independent, act with integrity, having knowledge and competence and being dedicated to their work. It has also been seen in previous research that the professional appearance and behavior matters in the audit profession. Due to the scandals in the audit profession over time, the need for supervisory boards has increased. It is the Swedish Inspectorate of Auditors (SIA) that perform the supervision of the auditors in Sweden and ensure that existing rules and standards are being followed. In previous research of disciplinary cases issued by the SIA, it is seen that professional wrongdoings made by auditors was of importance. However, no previous research has investigated what types of professional wrongdoings auditors commits. Aim: The aim of this study is to explore what manifests unprofessionalism in the audit profession. Disciplinary cases concerning professional wrongdoings will be analyzed in order to understand how the Swedish audit profession’s supervisory body, the SIA, assesses cases that relates to unprofessional behavior. Methodology: Disciplinary cases concerning professional wrongdoings between 2006-2019 has been analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. The disciplinary cases have been sorted into categories concerning professional aspects that have emerged from previous research and auditor’s code of conduct. The result has been analyzed and compared to previous research and the frame of reference. Result and conclusions: The types of professional wrongdoings the auditors commit are Lack of independence, Shortcomings in the auditor’s own business, Lack of dedication, Not fulfilled requirements, Personal shortcomings, Not act in public interest and Lack of integrity. The types of professional wrongdoings occurred most frequently was Lack of independence, Shortcomings the auditor’s own business and Lack of dedication. Lack of independence had the highest share of the total disciplinary cases issued, while Shortcomings in the auditor’s own business seem to be the most severe one as it had the largest share of withdrawal of the auditor’s authorization or approval. Future studies: As this study only take the perspective of the SIA, it would be further interesting to see how the auditor’s perceive professionalism and what aspects they find important in order to obtain a professional role. Hence, conducting a study from the perspective of the professionals would give a more nuanced picture of what it means being a professional. In addition, it would also be interesting to investigate how the audited client’s perceive professionalism in the audit, and what aspects of professionalism they find important in order to obtain trust for the auditor.

The core of this thesis is the report of an empirical investigation of the knowledges used by architects in practice. Eighty one respondents were contacted at regular intervals and asked to describe their current activities and what knowledges they had needed to employ to undertake the activities. Subsequently, thirty two of these architects were interviewed in order to find out what they believed differentiated architectural knowledge from that used by competitors in the building field. Results are categorised, analysed and interpreted in terms of a variety of theoretical approaches. Report of the empirical work is preceded by a broad theoretical investigation of a range of themes in development of the thesis title, with particular emphasis on conceptions of knowledge. Sociological theorising about professions and an historical interpretation of the development of‘professional society' are explored. Ideas related to the interaction of power and knowledge are also brought to attention. The final section is devoted to implications of the research for architectural education. This chapter draws on theoretical material, covered earlier in the work, which gives consideration of status issues in professions, the concept of social closure and the role played by tertiary-level education in ‘gate-keeping' on behalf of the architectural profession.

This mixed-method study analyzed and identified the impact heightened turbulence has on the profession of the superintendency and superintendent job satisfaction. More specifically, this study examined an assessment of the sources of turbulence and factors that superintendents claim impact their job satisfaction, while experiencing heightened degrees of turbulence. Today’s superintendent has significant expectations placed upon him or her and numerous constituencies to serve. Further, the position has evolved into one that requires detailed skill and mastery of varying degrees encompassing an assortment of subject material. Research has indicated the profession continues to experience high levels of stress and continued added job responsibilities with shrinking financial resources. However, most superintendents claim a high level of job satisfaction while navigating in the obvious turbulent environments they live in every day. It is this combination of job satisfaction and turbulence that this study discussed to further enhance the superintendent’s ability to remain successful and satisfied while performing as the public-school superintendent. To provide more information on the heightened turbulence superintendents experience, this mixed-method study analyzed the 500 Pennsylvania public school superintendents to help both current and future superintendents more deeply comprehend the impact such turbulence has on their profession. Syftet med undersökningen är att diskutera synen på läraryrkets status, genom att ta reda på vilka faktorer som kan påverka ett yrkes status. För att kunna analysera den empiri som samlades in kommer Gunnel Colnerud och Kjell Granströms teorier om ett professionellt yrke att diskuteras. Ulfsdotter Erikssons avhandlig om bland annat yrkesstatus och Gerhard Arfwedsons teorier om lärarlöner och kvinnodominans inom läraryrket kommer också att behandlas. Andy Hargreaves teorier används för att diskutera de statusskillnader som redan i skolan präglar eleverna och de fungerar även som ett komplement till Arfwedsons teorier. Undersökningen genomfördes med hjälp av en kvantitativ metod, i form av enkäter. Enkäterna delades ut till personer i åldern 19 och uppåt. Analyserna av enkäterna gav resultatet att statusen på läraryrket och dess utbildning är relativt låg. Merparten av deltagarna anser att statusen på läraryrket skulle kunna vara högre med en skärpning av lärarutbildningen, disciplin i skolan, lärarlegitimationer och höjda löner.
The purpose of this study is to discuss views of the teaching profession status, by finding out what factors can affect a professional status. In order to analyze the empirical data gathered Gunnel Colnerud and Kjell Granströms's theories of a professional occupation will be discussed. Ulfsdotter Eriksson's dissertation on, inter alia, occupational status and Gerhard Arfwedson theories about teacher salaries and female dominance in the teaching profession, will also be addressed. Andy Hargreaves theories will be used to discuss the status differences that already characterize school students and they also act as a complement to Arfwedson theories. The survey was conducted using a quantitative method, in the form of questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to persons aged 19 and older. Analyses of the questionnaires gave the result that the status of the teaching profession and its education is relatively low. The majority of respondents believe that the status of the teaching profession could be higher with a tightening of the teacher training, school discipline, a legitimation of teachers and higher wages.

Patents contain useful technical information about inventions; however, accessing the knowledge in patents requires considerable effort, which results in an under-usage of patent knowledge. This research investigated the core techniques that are required to create hyperlinks for patents similar to the hyperlinks in the Wikipedia. Such a system can make knowledge captured in patents more accessible to a wide range of patent users including scientific communities. In doing so, a new context matching technique was proposed to improve the accuracy of linking. In general, the research has extended the understanding of linking methods in the patent domain.

Since the establishment of the Society of Industrial Artists (SIA) in 1930, the professional identity of the designer has been a subject of critical debate. This thesis uncovers the histories of this debate, paying particular attention to the structures, organisations and social practices that have governed, represented and given meaning to the identity of the designer in Britain, 1930-2010. Principally informed by close scrutiny of the archive of the Chartered Society of Designers, (CSD), the thesis argues that the design profession is constructed through reflexive social practices, in which the designer has been, and remains, an active agent. It contends that the structure, organisation and identity of the design profession is not fixed or immutable, but fluid, responsive and contingent upon shifting dynamics, internal and external to the profession.

This Grounded Theory study aimed to investigate the role of job and profession satisfaction in the turnover intentions of former and current educators. Results revealed that dissatisfaction with features of the job and profession are co-determinants in educators’ intention to leave the profession. Multiple factors, notably contextual influences, contribute to pronounced work demands, prolonged stress and dissatisfaction. These findings have multiple implications for stemming the flow of educators from the profession.

The publications in this portfolio are focused on issues related to educational innovations and in particular, how improved practice can be encouraged, planned and implemented. It highlights how activist professionals can play key roles in mobilising teachers, academics, communities and education authorities and so engage in the politics of transformation that invokes wider issues of equity and social justice. As members of communities of practice that value respect, reciprocity and collaboration, activist professionals forge an identity that is strategic and tactical and works strongly in the interests of students and the communities in which schools are located. In identifying and promoting better practice, activist professionals are critical of existing structures and in shaping and embracing the challenges that present themselves, they frame the future agendas of schooling and education. This research as an activist professional in both diverse and intersecting communities of practice, has led to the development of a range of benchmarking methodologies as a way of identifying and fostering better professional practice. Workplace violence, which exists in many professions, is not excluded from the nursing profession. The term horizontal violence is commonly used to define violence amongst colleagues in the work force. Despite an increase in the literature during the last three decades, horizontal violence continues to remain a serious issue for the nursing profession. This phenomenon must be taken seriously because studies indicate that nurses encountering co-worker violence often intent to leave the profession. Clearly, this will cause a greater strain on the current nursing shortage, which is currently projected to increase. The strain of nurses encountering incivility amongst one another, will not only impact the nursing profession but also health agencies/organizations. The ongoing recruitment and termination of nurses’ will adversely impact organizations. Finally, as health care is already associated with many stressors, the additional strain of horizontal violence will ultimately impact patient care. The intent of this study was to explore nurses’ experience of horizontal violence; this to draw attention of the possible consequences and the seriousness of horizontal violence to the nursing profession and health care organizations. The intent was also to identify strategies to mitigate horizontal violence in the workplace. A qualitative approach was employed using phenomenology as the research methodology. Phenomenology is the study of the phenomena through the lived experience, which is exactly the essence that I intended to capture in the work place violence study. Data collection was completed via individual in-depth interviews. Themes and patterns were identified during the interview process. The results of this study revealed that nurses were enduring horizontal violence and the current methods of dealing with co-worker incivility were not effective. Although policies were in place to deter co-worker violence, these were not enforced, and the reporting methods were a deterrent to report horizontal violence.

This is a rhetorical criticism of the science fiction short story, "Profession," by Isaac Asimov. Primary focus is on Asimov's persuasive use of this message to influence potentially creative young people to consider technological careers. A brief synopsis of the story is given, along with a statement of the functional role of science fiction in accustoming individuals to societal changes resulting from technological advancements.Methodology is based upon Kenneth Burke's dramatism which views human action in terms of a drama. Burke's concepts of identification and occupational psychosis are used in discovering the rhetor's use of persuasive strategies. Burke's pentad is used for analysis of significant ratios. The dominance of the act-scene ratio is demonstrated by the supremacy of action over motion.Asimov's work shows the influence of a philosophy of realism, identifiable by the featuring of the pentadic term "act." Asimov's primary motives are identified as a desire to share his belief in the benefits of technology and his own need for creative self-expression.

Bakgrund: Humor är ett brett begrepp som definieras på olika sätt. Humor har stor betydelse i kommunikation och bemötande och finns i alla vårdmiljöer. Ett gott bemötande främjar hälsa, vilket är grundläggande i sjuksköterskans profession. Humor har många fysiologiska och psykologiska effekter, till exempel ökad frisättning av endorfiner, minskad oro och stress. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att belysa hur sjuksköterskan kan använda sig av humor i sin profession. Metod: En litteraturstudie genomfördes med en systematisk sökning i tre databaser som genererade i 14 resultatartiklar. Databearbetningen utgick ifrån en manifest innehållsanalys. Resultat: Resultatet belyser tre teman: humorns betydelse i interaktion med patienten, humorns betydelse i interaktion med medarbetare och humorns betydelse för sjuksköterskan. I interaktion med patienten används humor relationsskapande, för att patienten ska känna sig unik, uppleva välbefinnande, för att öka följsamheten, underlätta för och få mer kunskap om patienten. Även olämplig humoranvändning belyses i temat. I interaktion med medarbetare används humor för att hantera arbetet, skapa gemenskap och kommunicera underliggande mening och avsikt. Humor har betydelse för sjuksköterskan som copingstrategi och för att hantera stress. Slutsats: Humor har stor betydelse i sjuksköterskans profession och påverkar många människor i sjuksköterskans närhet. Kunskap om humorns effekter behöver implementeras i sjuksköterskeutbildningen och medvetandegöras i professionen.
Background: Humour is a wide concept, defined in several ways. Humour is important for communication and encounter, existing in all healthcare settings. A good encounter promotes health, which is essential in the nursing profession. Humour has many physiological and psychological effects, for example increased release of endorphins, reduced anxiety and stress. Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate how the registered nurse can practice humour in the nursing profession. Method: A literature review was conducted with a systematic search in three databases that generated in 14 result articles. A manifest content analysis was the foundation of the data analysis. Findings: The findings illustrate three themes: the importance of humour in interaction with the patient, the importance of humour in interaction with co-workers and the importance of humour for the registered nurse. In interaction with the patient humour is used to build relationships, make the patient feel unique, enhance wellbeing, make it easier for the patient, increase compliance and gain more knowledge of the patient. Inappropriate use of humour is also illustrated in the theme. In interaction with co-workers humour is used to manage work, create communion and communicate underlying meaning and intention. Humour is important for the nurse as a coping strategy and to manage stress. Conclusion: Humour has great importance in the nursing profession and affects many people in presence of the nurse. Knowledge about the effects of humour needs to be implemented in the nursing education and acknowledged in the nursing profession.

The architectural profession is multiple, rich, and diverse. This multiplicity can be characterised by diverse cultures of practice that differ in their particular understandings of the profession and their definitions of the role of the architect within the process of building procurement and production. Among these cultures, my thesis proposes that two cultures of practice are most prominent: what I call the instrumental culture and the critical culture. The instrumental culture is characterised by what I term the technical-rational mode of practice, which is the dominant mode in the contemporary profession. This mode of practice is often adopted in the production of buildings by or for multinational corporations, and largely shares their values. The discourse of the instrumental culture is so influential that it is frequently embraced by regulatory bodies in architecture and the building industry. The critical culture, on the other hand, while not dominant, maintains a prominent presence within the cultural sphere of the architectural profession. It covers a broad range of practices that generally embody ideas of qualitative, sensory, and social conceptions of architecture, and shares the frame of knowledge of cultural and critical theory. This research pursues a creative practice methodology, beginning by mapping the territories of different modes of practice in the contemporary global architectural profession. It traces the discourse of the dominant instrumental culture of practice and the nature of the dialogue between this culture and the critical culture of practice. The research investigates this dialogue and its influence on the configuration of the status quo of the architectural profession. It interrogates the imperatives of this domination on the particular values of the architectural profession and its future trajectory. To do so, the research proposes the proactive metaphor of Practiceopolis: the city of the architectural profession. Practiceopolis is an imaginary world where the architectural profession is conceived as a city-state in a confederation of states representing different actors forming the ‘country of the building industry’. By using this metaphor, the cultural capital of the architectural field is architecturalised through visible and tangible elements in a series of iterative narratives that help to investigate the dialogue between prominent cultures of practice. Practiceopolis draws from the philosopher Andrew Feenberg’s classification of varying stances towards technology and technical knowledge as key factors of how contemporary practices differ in their ideologies towards the profession (Feenberg, 2012). In addition, they comprise an intrinsic component distinguishing the values of the dominant instrumental culture of practice. The first part of the research builds-up the metaphor of Practiceopolis through four narratives. It concludes with the acknowledgment of a critical ideological division between the two prominent cultures of architectural practice I have identified. This first part of the research in turn prepares the foundation for second part: Stories from Practiceopolis. The second part is a set of quasi-realistic stories that take place in the imaginary city. These stories take the form of a graphic novel, which narrates situations experienced by the researcher: a self-confessed technical-rational practitioner through his experience of working in a research-led practice which pursues a critical approach. The stories revolve around the researcher’s role in the renovation of a Grade II listed building in the UK. The investigations of the research expand upon Donald Schön’s methods of ‘reflection on action’ and ‘reflection in action’ (Schön, 1985; 2017). 3 The research concludes by warning against subsuming distinctive values of the architectural profession under the instrumental values of other actors in the building industry. The research warns of the danger of the domination of one mode of practice and the strict attachment to technological processes, which could result in influential changes to the foundations of the architectural profession. The research ends with propositions regarding the particular values and the tacit knowledge of the architectural profession, and proposes a critical-instrumental mind-set to explore how these values could be defined, communicated, and marketed.
