Accelerating diffusion of innovation to end users and enabling faster adoption is essential to product developers, especially in the industries having a rapid pace of innovation. The ability of innovators to engage with the user community to understand their needs, motivations and top issues is critical to developing products that hit the mark on meeting user needs. In the computing industry there is a need to evolve the innovation development process in parallel to the exponential growth in complexity of the products and the broad ecosystem support that is required to meet user expectations. There are many paths to engage a user community and to obtain end user insights to create a product vision and new usage models. A simple "proof of concept" framework extending product research and development to the end user community is articulated herein. This proof of concept framework is defined in the context of a platform - a collection of ingredients that work together to meet user need. Proof of concept is conducted with users prior to general availability of a product with early ingredients that are in the research and development pipeline. All business users of new product platforms do not adopt an innovation at the same time and can be qualitatively placed in widely accepted classification of adopter categories based on their receptivity to adopting a new product. The leading adopter categories in order are the innovator, early adopter and early majority. These categories of users may help shape current and future generations of a product specifically by validating usage scenarios with integration and deployment of a product under development in real user settings, and by helping to define trends and map requirements for future generations of platform capabilities. Using the proof of concept framework in this way helps ensure that when a product goes to market, it simply works and meets user expectations.
The importance of recognizing a user need cannot be understated. The user feedback from the platform proof of concept stimulates research and development activities to address specific user needs in the current or future generations of a product platform. There are multiple communication channels for potential adopters of an innovation. Mass media channels are effective means to create awareness of an innovation. Proof of concepts with potential users enables more rapid eventual diffusion by translating user deployment and integration learning's into product characteristics that are broadly appealing to potential adopters.

Innovation is a hot topic; innovation is happening everywhere. Innovation is "romantic", reaching for the stars, against all odds, solving the problem no one thought possible. Most CEOs would not characterize survival as "romantic". Innovate or perish; the mantra, the truth, plain, stark, cold and naked. It gets worse; the environment is rapidly changing. Sophisticated customers are demanding quick responses with low cost, high quality products. What once worked with brilliant success is now failing. If innovation is happening everywhere, it is increasingly not happening here. During the past two years, a multi-vendor government project consisting of two vendors geographically segregated across three regions has seen tremendous success followed by almost total collapse. Initial program status and progress indicate near exponential trajectory: ahead of schedule, under budget and all functionality present. However, collapse was not too far off. The integration effort was a complete failure. Key schedule milestone dates were continuously missed. The gap between functionality believed completed and really completed widened. The story reads like a classic runaway project. Worse, the budget was near exhaustion. The central contribution of the analysis is the identification of the innovation trap. The innovation trap identifies conflicting corporate objectives governing the innovation strategy for new business development and the product development strategy of existing programs in the product pipeline. This study examines the innovation trap by applying System Dynamics techniques to develop a set of heuristics not only to identify collapse conditions but also how to address the problem. The goal of this study is to develop a concept for an improved organization and structure for today's high technology product companies where innovation is crucial for corporate success.

This paper has been an iterative rather than a breakthrough process. we approached the topic of product design and innovation with notions of what it meant and how good designs were created. our purpose here has been to provide some understanding of the complexity of the issues surrounding breakthrough product designs. we redefine a variety of terms that are used liberally in the field to provide some sort of precise understanding of our perspective. Nowadays in the automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) most of the innovation development is done by the Research and Development (R&D) teams driven by corporate strategies, marketing understanding of customer's needs, brand aspirations, regulatory requirements, and advance engineering requirements to surpass competitors and gain market share and profit. The literature explained that innovation comes from several sources and different methods such as design thinking approach in the organization, user-centered innovation, adapting available technology from other industries, open source generation, and clear understanding of key internal and external stakeholders' wants, needs, and interests. In this thesis, I explain the innovation process and the different types of Product Development (PD) organizations, develop historical and qualitative distinctions of innovations done in the automotive industry from multiple input sources, and create an automotive OEM system by using systems architecture principles which helped me to analyze the critical stakeholders that are required to encourage and support the innovation process. Based on the literature and my experience I create a new model for integrating the innovation process and product development process by using a systems engineering approach. In addition, I survey Ford of Mexico (FoM) PD organization to understand how innovative the organization is, and integrate the innovation process into their product development organization, applying this new framework focusing on the elements that the organization can evolve to generate innovation within their design and development activities, and to improve technical capabilities to work on advance engineering concepts usually done by the corporate office in the United States (U.S). Finally, I suggest key actions that could strengthen the innovation culture within Ford of Mexico PD.

The rapid development of the internet and social media have democratized the innovation opportunities for small startups and individual innovators. This is creating more ways for companies to exploit external ideas for their internal innovation. The dominant use of open innovation today is in idea generation. However, some companies have gainfully applied open innovation across other phases of product development, including concept development, detailed design, manufacturing and sales. The academic literature in this area is rapidly evolving and is covering many different concepts associated with open innovation. At the same time, product development processes are also evolving and are being integrated with more digital tools and electronic workflows. Although many companies are saving R&D costs by utilizing open innovation methods, there clearly is a need to understand the right open innovation tools and processes to maximize the returns from this strategy; one approach does not fit all. This thesis builds a taxonomy of open innovation and discusses its applicability to modern product design processes. This thesis studies the applications and benefits of open innovation in all phases of product design, and suggests strategies for an optimal mix of open and closed innovation processes and tools applicable to modern product design. Challenges in incorporating open innovation and managerial strategies to overcome them are also discussed.

Grounded in visual perception and observation, the tools and techniques used by radiologist are used for both screening and diagnostic purposes throughout the continuum of patient care. Despite the overwhelmingly positive impact that-radiology has played in just over a century, the medical specialty is facing significant challenges such as declining reimbursements and an avalanche of new imaging data. The basic challenge to increase productivity and reduce costs is not necessarily new. In fact, scholars have long observed patterns of successful innovation that contribute to the pace, direction, and progress of many industries. This thesis explores the evolution of radiology through product and process innovation. Special attention is given to the role of labor and equipment specialization in reducing the number of steps while increasing productivity. An analysis of contemporary industry indicators such as residency program application rates and image volumes is presented in order to better understand the current climate of radiology. The goal of this study is to shed light on where the industry has come and where it stands, in order to provide clinicians, engineers, managers and entrepreneurs alike with action ideas to help bring in a new era in radiology.

. Industrial and product designers are invited to use the findings of the thesis to assist in developing a common smart materials language and culture, enriched by details, technicalities, opportunities, and creative and innovative material attributes. The study commences with the creation of a concise and compact reservoir of technical knowledge on smart materials and critically contrasts two established systems of classification for smart materials. Then, the subject of materials information appropriate to industrial design is discussed, highlighting channels through which smart materials information may be communicated at an optimum level so as to be amenable to exploitation by industrial designers. A sectoral analysis of smart materials use follows, including the presentation of factors that may hinder their more extensive exploitation in major industrial sectors. v The thesis concludes that smart materials have potential to initiate a breakthrough in the materials universe, and that industrial designers have a role in promoting smart materials knowledge, the capabilities of smart materials, and their innovation possibilities. It is recomended that since smart materials are a new generation of materials quite different from the conventional, they be promoted carefully through the proposed Information Hierarchy.

Evar is a project degree of 22,5 ECTS credits individually carried out by André Runling during the spring of 2012 at Karlstad University, for a bachelor degree in Innovation technique and Design engineering. The assigner for this project is Johan Larsvall, industrial designer and owner of Idesign in Stockholm. Academic supervisor at Karlstad University has been Lennart Wihk, industrial designer and university lecturer. Examiner has been Fredrik Thuvander, professor and university lecturer. Idesign is a design agency with office on Longholmen in central of Stockholm and is assigned by different companies in different sectors such as, Silva Sweden AB and Trafikverket. Idesign got the task from Trafikverket to make suggestions to concepts of bike lights that increase the use and reliability compared to todays use. The project was initiated by Trafikverket while Idesign were responsible of developing a bike light to Silva. Silva has specialised themselves in head lamps for many years and have seen an opportunity to reach a new market with the collaboration, which resulted in this degree project and development primary to Idesign. The projects first part was to study what is inadequate in today's lighting and why it is not used as much as it should. The study was conducted with a poll and discussions on Swedish forums on the internet. A large part of the project was to compare why the usage looks different and is used more often in Denmark, and also Germany. Germany has a detailed approval of bicycle lights in their traffic regulations which was needed to be interpreted. Using the information gathered, a development of concepts started to a bicycle light that exudes simplicity and appeal to a commuting cyclist, with the idea generation method and product specification which was evaluated in a matrix. Of three concepts that were presented to Idesign, one concept was selected for further processing which developed into a final proposal and description of a bicycle light. The final solution means that the head lamp is powered by a battery, and notifies with a battery indicator when it needs charging, directly into a electrical outlet. With a simple single-hand grip it’s connected in the bracket and, in its turn a buckle, which is mounted steplessly on the bicycle by a strap. It means it can be mounted on any bicycle. While the rear light is supposed to always sit on, have the same type of installation and have an automatic on and off switch via a light and motion detector. It still has a battery indicator to se when batteries should be replaced. Both the front and the rear light is equipped with LED for lighting.

”Longboards” is a degree project in the Innovations- and design engineering program at Karlstad University. The job requestor is Space Production AB with Dan Edanius, Art director and senior project manager, as the project owner.
Space Production AB started out as a showcase carpentry company but has today evolved into a company that operates complete exhibitions and events. The company’s main business is to produce, install and store branded environments designed by another party but also supplies everything from idea sketches to assemblage and service. One of Space projects spring 2008 was the production of Slalom Skateboarding World Championships and it was through this a degree project was created.
The task was to create a diverse product line containing three models of longboards. The products would be unique and aimed at a niche market but yet be sellable and appeal to the upper segment buyer. Further the opportunity to create more wild concepts that could be used in future projects was given.
An extensive research on materials, market, target group and culture, resulted in a creative design process. Through a target group analysis a number of reference consumers were created. Their needs worked as inspiration and was analysed. Two separate sessions of idea generating were the fundament of a categorization that eventually resulted in eight strong concepts that was presented to the management group.
The project has resulted in three developed concepts that could potentially broaden the existing longboard market as well as a band of ideas that could be used for inspiration of future projects.

koncept.
Jämförelser och urval av koncept har genomförts med hjälp av ett antal utvecklingsverktyg;
QFD-analys (Quality Function Deployment), FMEA-analys (Failure Mode Effect Analysis)
arbetsprocessen flutit i rätt riktning.

The purpose of this research is to obtain the appraisal and feelings of customers, translated by product attributes, about an innovative product during its design process, i.e. without all the sensory and functional features available like for a finished product. Two main goals are to inquire the customers’ ways of thinking early in the design process and to compare several products themselves or the same product at different stages in the process. The objective is to help the designers and managers decision. To meet these goals, we realized and checked several methodological approaches:• To offset the lack of sensory and functional features of an innovation’s prototype, we created a “sensorial brochure”,• To facilitate the product assessments’ comparison, we created a standard questionnaire to inquire customers. In fact, with a bibliographic research of the hedonic and pragmatic attributes involved in the assessment of a product, we created a list of statements,• To validate these methodological tools, we realized a comparative approach at several milestones or stages of the design process. In total, we realized six customers’ assessments at different stages of the design process with 302 respondents. Then we studied and compared the assessments’ results. The aim is to validate the construction of the sensorial brochure and the questionnaire and to conclude from the innovation’s prototype assessments at different stages of the design process. The questionnaire needs to be improved but it has already permitted to inquire the customers on their hedonic and pragmatic attributes in front of a product. The sensorial brochure helps customers to imagine the future product

In this report, you as a reader will be able to take note of a statement of the work the group has performed in the course KPP305, Examensarbete i Produktutveckling (Master Thesis Work in Product development), 30hp. This work is based on an assignment from an earlier course, at Mälardalen University, known as Industridesign 2 (Industrial design 2nd). During this course the group was awarded a task which was to "give disabled people the opportunity to make music”, and the group thus developed a visual concept over an instrument which was custom made for people with disabilities in their upper body. This thesis can be seen as a continuation of the justmentioned task.
The group has through the whole project had close dialogue to people in different industries, such as people from disability associations, instrument makers, rheumatics and disabled people with several. Someone else who also been very helpful during the project is the group's supervisor, Jan Frohm, ho been there with advice and acted as a sounding board to the ideas and thoughts the group had about the project.
The objective of the project was to continue the work which the group achieved in previous course, and thus arrive at a definitive solution to it. The reason why the group chose to continue working on this project was that they found it important that all people, regardless of functional or physical disabilities must have the ability to make music.
The group has through an extensive research, contacts, a number of key interviews and a variety of tools for product development been able to come up with a solution that meets up to the problems which was set in the beginning of the project. The project resulted in a prototype of an instrument, which the group decided to call for Funkinstrument, which is intended for people who suffer from some form of disability in the arms and/or hands, or suffer from rheumatism. The group itself is very pleased with the outcome of the project, and of its efforts in this thesis.

”The next generation of spine protection” is a degree project in the Innovation and design engineering program at the University of Karlstad. The employer is Stefan Ytterborn at POC Sweden in Stockholm.
POC is a company that works towards developing new and efficient protection for alpine skiers to prevent serious injuries. Both the equipment and the way people ski are getting more and more extreme and therefore new protection must be developed to offer as good and flexible protection as possible.
The assignment has been to develop a product or method to protect the spine at alpine skiing. Due to the openness of the problem there has been a lot of scope during the idea generating and product developing phase.
This degree project has resulted in a product that protects the spine against the increasingly frequent damage, the compression injury. Due to the lack of existing protection against these types of damages on the market the research phase has been a big part of the project.

The research project behind our thesis aims to support the promotion of new clay particles having been patented by the EBInnov® laboratory. This new polyfunctional ingredient is designed to satisfy several applications in the bio-industries, including the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, the phytosanitary sector or the environment. The aim of the thesis is to integrate the technical, sensory and regulatory specifications of bio-industrial companies in an innovation-oriented design process. Thus, the research hypotheses rely on the emerging paradigm of open innovation in these sectors. We support that the new innovation intermediaries are efficient in the bio-industries and allow the integration of the innovation potential in the early stages of the design process. The validity of these assumptions was studied by means of industry-related experiments directly linked to the main application sectors of the EBISilc® technology. Finally, we propose an innovation-oriented design process taking into account the evolution of the innovation models in the bio-industries

The paper reports the results of a study of innovations and new product development in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in Boston/Cambridge cluster. The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that more intensive or frequent communications correlate positively with higher productivity, measured as the number of patents, new drugs or clinical trials per employee. No significant correlations were found between communications and new drugs or clinical trials. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) negative correlations were found between Number of Patents per Employee and the three metrics devised for intensity of communications.

In this research, we propose an integrated innovative design process with which we can systematically execute all the processes from customer voice to conceptual design. The Nominal group technique (NGT) builds a structured communication process to obtain customer requirements. After customer requirements are obtained, their importance has to be determined to continue the Quality function deployment (QFD) process. The proposed process which combine QFD with TRIZ effectively to identify the contradictions of TRIZ. A software TRIZ Innovative Principles(TIP) tool is developed based on this process. Application of the integrated innovative design process to the case of the design of economy flight cabins. It can be concluded that this integrated innovative design process is capable of using inventive principles of TRIZ more efficiently, effectively, and systematically to assist the managements to increase design values.
