A generalization of Markov point processes is introduced in which interactions occur between connected components of the point pattern. A version of the Hammersley-Clifford characterization theorem is proved which states that a point process is a Markov interacting component process if and only if its density function is a product of interaction terms associated with cliques of connected components. Integrability and superpositional properties of the processes are shown and a pairwise interaction example is used for detailed exploration.

John Hammersley was a pioneer among mathematicians, who defied classification as pure or applied; when introduced to guests at Trinity College, Oxford, he would say he did ‘difficult sums’. He believed passionately in the importance of mathematics with strong links to real–life situations and in a system of mathematical education in which the solution of problems takes precedence over the generation of theory. He will be remembered for his work on percolation theory, subadditive stochastic processes, self–avoiding walks and Monte Carlo methods, and, by those who knew him, for his intellectual integrity and his ability to inspire and to challenge. Quite apart from his extensive research achievements, for which he earned a reputation as an outstanding problem–solver, he was a leader in the movement of the 1950s and 1960s to rethink the content of school mathematics syllabuses.

Data-driven models are essential tools for the development of surrogate models that can be used for the design, operation, and optimization of industrial processes. One approach of developing surrogate models is through the use of input–output data obtained from a process simulator. To enhance the model robustness, proper sampling techniques are required to cover the entire domain of the process variables uniformly. In the present work, Monte Carlo with pseudo-random samples as well as Latin hypercube samples and quasi-Monte Carlo samples with Hammersley Sequence Sampling (HSS) are generated. The sampled data obtained from the process simulator are fitted to neural networks for generating a surrogate model. An illustrative case study is solved to predict the gas stabilization unit performance. From the developed surrogate models to predict process data, it can be concluded that of the different sampling methods, Latin hypercube sampling and HSS have better performance than the pseudo-random sampling method for designing the surrogate model. This argument is based on the maximum absolute value, standard deviation, and the confidence interval for the relative average error as obtained from different sampling techniques.

Kaip teigiama Jeffrey, Walford, Delamont ir Atkinson Wiley tarptautinių edukologijos etnografinių tyrimų vadove (Beach, Bagley and Marques da Silva, 2018) keliuose publikuotuose skyriuose, Hammersley ir Atkinson Etnografija: principai praktikoje – viena iš dažniausiai cituojamų edukologijos etnografinių tyrimų publikacijų Šiaurės Europoje, ypač Jungtinėje Karalystėje. Pirmą kartą 1983 metais išleistoje knygoje etnografija aprašoma kaip tyrimo metodas, kuriuo siekiama giliau suprasti lokalias žinias ir kultūrą bei reprezentuoti šią kultūrą ją aprašant. Autoriai pažymi, kad „etnografija apima tiesioginį ir netiesioginį dalyvavimą žmonių gyvenime – stebint, kas vyksta, klausantis, kas sakoma, pateikiant esminius klausimus, renkant visus įmanomus duomenis, kurie padės atskleisti nagrinėjamą problemą – pagrindinį tyrimo objektą“ (1983, p. 1.). Panašių idėjų pateikia ir kiti autoriai. Pasak Trondman, Willis ir Lund (2018), šių idėjų ištakos – 1907 metais Paryžiuje pradėta diskusija apie etnografinius tyrimus, jų galimą vaidmenį ir vertę socialiniam teoretizavimui. Į šią diskusiją įsitraukė tokie socialinių mokslų atstovai, kaip antai Emile Durkheim ir René Worms. Pastarasis pradėjo diskusiją. Pasak jo, etnografija – metodas pavaizduoti „primityvias visuomenes“. Durkheim teigė, kad etnografinis tyrimas yra prasmingesnis ir gali suteikti patikimą pagrindą analizuojant kultūras, kultūros procesus ir jų istorinę raidą visose visuomenėse, ne tik vadinamosiose primityviose. Vėliau šiuo principu vadovavosi Čikagos sociologijos mokykla (angl. Chicago School of Sociology). Pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais Jungtinėse Amerikos Valstijose ir Jungtinėje Karalystėje šiuo principu remiantis nusakomi edukologijos etnografinių tyrimų parametrai. Edukologijos etnografiniai tyrimai pasklido ir kitose šalyse. Šiame straipsnyje apžvelgiama edukologijos etnografinio tyrimo istorinė raida ir šiuolaikiniai iššūkiai, ypač Europoje.

Abstract. Although a nationwide study focusing on the evolution of low flows in Czechia was conducted in the past, a need for the revision of the results has arisen. By means of the trend analysis, which specifically considers the presence of significant serial correlation at the first lag, the former study highlighted areas where 7-day low flows increase or decrease. However, taking into account only the lag-one autoregressive process might still have led to the detection of so-called pseudo-trends because, besides short-term persistence, also long-term persistence may adversely influence the variance of the test statistic when the independence among data is required. Therefore, one should carefully investigate the presence of persistence in time series. Before the trend analysis itself, the authors' previous studies aimed at the discrimination between short memory processes and long memory processes employing jointly the Phillips–Perron test and the Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin test. This analysis was accompanied by the Hurst exponent estimation. Here, the subsequent identification of trends is carried out using three modifications of the Mann–Kendall test that allow different kinds of persistence. These include the Bayley–Hammersley–Matalas–Langbein–Lettenmaier equivalent sample size approach, the trend-free pre-whitening approach and a block bootstrap with automatic selection of the block length, which was applied for the first time in hydrology. The general results are similar to those presented in the former study on trends. Nevertheless, the divergent minimum discharges evolution in the western part of Czechia is now much clear. Moreover, no significant increasing trend in series incorporating Julian days was found.

Hammersley asserts that “radical” strands of ethnomethodology and constructionism in science and technology studies (STS) take an anti-representationalist approach which denies that “science produces representations referring to objects or processes that exist independently of it.” In this ‘Comment,’ I argue that ethnomethodology is distinct from both constructionist and post-constructionist research programs in STS, and that Hammersley presents a binary choice between being for or against the general proposition that scientific representations correspond to independent realities. He suggests that STS studies should “suspend” the philosophical question of whether scientific representations correspond to their worldly referents. Perhaps this is good advice for proponents of STS who promote a “turn to ontology” or propose to do “empirical philosophy,” but ethnomethodologists take a deflationary approach to the topics of philosophical inquiry.

AbstractWe obtain a new relation between the distributions $$\upmu _t$$ μ t at different times $$t\ge 0$$ t ≥ 0 of the continuous-time totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) started from the step initial configuration. Namely, we present a continuous-time Markov process with local interactions and particle-dependent rates which maps the TASEP distributions $$\upmu _t$$ μ t backwards in time. Under the backwards process, particles jump to the left, and the dynamics can be viewed as a version of the discrete-space Hammersley process. Combined with the forward TASEP evolution, this leads to a stationary Markov dynamics preserving $$\upmu _t$$ μ t which in turn brings new identities for expectations with respect to $$\upmu _t$$ μ t . The construction of the backwards dynamics is based on Markov maps interchanging parameters of Schur processes, and is motivated by bijectivizations of the Yang–Baxter equation. We also present a number of corollaries, extensions, and open questions arising from our constructions.

We describe a pilot project designed to assess the feasibility of re-use across 12 diverse qualitative datasets related to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the UK, from research projects undertaken between 1997 and 2013 – an approach which is chronically underused. First, we consider the sweeping biomedical changes and imperatives relating to HIV in this time frame, offering a rationale for data re-use at this point in the epidemic. We then reflexively situate the processes and procedures we devised for this study with reference to relevant methodological literature. Hammersley’s and Leonelli’s contributions have been particularly instructive through this process, and following their lead, we conclude with further considerations for those undertaking qualitative data re-use, reflecting on the extent to which qualitative data re-use as a practice requires attention to both the given and the constructed aspects of data when assembled as evidence.

The overall objective of this project is research-based development, implementation and evaluation of a game-based learning concept to be used in the veterinary education. Herd visits and animal contact are essential for the development of veterinary competences and skills during education. Yet veterinary students have little occasion to reach/attain a proper level of confidence in their own skills/abilities, as they have limited “training-facilities” (Kneebone & Baillie, 2008). One possible solution mightbe to provide a safe, virtual environment (game-based) where students could practise interdisciplinary clinical skills in an easily-accessible, interactive setting. A playable demo using Classical Swine Fever in a pig herd as an example has been produced for this purpose. In order totailor the game concept to the specific veterinary learning environment and to ensure compliance with both learning objectives and the actual learning processes/procedures of the veterinary students, the project contains both a developmental aspect (game development) and an exploration of the academic (scholastic) and profession (practice) oriented learning context. The initial phase of the project was a preliminary exploration of the actual learning context, providing an important starting point for the upcoming phase in which I will concentrate on research-based development, implementation and evaluation of a game-based virtual environment in this course context. In the academic (scholastic) and profession (practice) oriented learning context of a veterinary course in Herd Health Management (Pig module),ethnographic studies have been conducted by using multiple data collection methods; participant observation, spontaneous dialogues and interviews (Borgnakke, 1996; Hammersley & Atkinson, 2007). All courserelated activities in the different learning spaces (commercial pig herds, auditoriums, post-mortem examinations, independent group work) were followed.This paper will describe the project and it will focus in particular on the initial exploration of the veterinary learning context in terms of theory, empirical data and the methods.

Dans le cadre de cette thèse,trois modèles ont été étudiés indépendamment. Ils ont en commun d’être des modèles aléatoires définis dans le plan et possédant une propriété de stationnarité bidimensionnelle. Le premier est le modèle de Hammersley stationnaire dans le quart de plan, introduit et étudié par Cator et Groeneboom.Nous présentons ici une preuve probabiliste des fluctuations gaussiennes dans le cas non critique. Le deuxième modèle peut être vu comme une version stationnaire du problème d’O’Connell-Yor. La preuve de sa stationnarité est obtenue en introduisant une discrétisation de ce modèle dont nous montrons la stationnarité, puis en observant que cette stationnarité est préservée à la limite. Enfin,le troisième modèle est une classe généralede systèmes aléatoires de lignes brisées dansle quart de plan, dont on montre la réversibilité. Cette classe contient de nombreux processus classiques comme des modèles de percolation de dernier passage. La nouveauté ici est qu’un poids est associé à chaque ligne
In this PhD thesis, three models have been independently studied. They all have in common to be random models defined in the plane and having a two-dimensional stationarity property. The first one is Hammersley’s stationary model in the quarter plane, introduced and studied by Cator and Groeneboom. We present here a probablistic proof the Gaussian fluctuations in the non-critical case. The second model can be seen as a stationary modification ofO’Connell-Yor’s problem. The proof of its stationarity is obtained by introducing a discretisation of this model, by proving its stationairty and then by observing that this stationarity is preserved in the limit. Finally, the third model is a general class of random systems of horizontal and vertical weighted broken lines on the quarter plane whose distribution are proved to be reversible. This class of systems generalizes several classical processes of the same kind. The noveltycomes here from the introduction of a weight associated with each line

No presente trabalho provamos resultados sobre as flutuações dos fluxos de partículas e das partículas marcadas no processo de Hammersley multiclasse. Os métodos das demonstrações são robustos, formulados de modo a serem aplicados em outros processos, em particular se aplicam ao processo de exclusão totalmente assimétrico multiclasse (TASEP multiclasse) e à seu respectivo modelo de percolação de última passagem. Os principais teoremas obtidos são um teorema central do limite para o choque, seu coeficiente de difusão e uma fórmula exata para a variância do fluxo de partículas de classe N >1 para o processo em equilíbrio multiclasse.
We prove fluctuations results concerning fluxes of particles and tagged particles on multiclass Hammersley process. The methods used are robust and apply to other processes, in particular all the proofs can be adapted to the Multiclass totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (Multiclass TASEP) and its respective last passage percolation model. The main theorems obtained are a central limit theorem for the shock, its diffusion coefficient and an exact formula for the variance of the $N$-th class particle flux in a stationary version of the multiclass process when N > 1.

No presente trabalho, estudamos alguns sistemas de partículas interagentes que podem ser vistos como modelos simples de fluxo de tráfego, a saber: O Processo de Hammersley-Aldous-Diaconis e o Processo de Exclusão. Exploramos suas representações como modelos de crescimento no plano. Ênfase é dada aos casos em que há mais de um tipo de partícula, aos processos multiclasses e às suas relações com modelos de filas. Analogia entre os modelos é usada para provar os resultados. Por fim, damos uma nova prova para o cálculo da variância assintótica reescalonada do fluxo de partículas de segunda classe no processo de Hammersley multiclasse em equilíbrio.
In the present work we study the following interacting particle systems which can be seen as simple models of traffic flow: The Hammersley-Aldous-Diaconis Process and the Exclusion Process. We explore the related growth models in the plane. Focus is given to cases where there are more than one kind of particles, to the multitype processes and to their relations with queue models. Analogy between the models is used to prove the results. At last, we give a new proof for the calculation of the asimptotic flux of second class particles in the Multiclass Hammersley process in equilibrium.

This paper presents a new approach to improve process yield by determining an optimum set of fixture layouts for a given multi-station assembly system which can satisfy: (i) parts and subassemblies locating stability in each fixture layout; and (ii) fixture system robustness against environmental noises in order to minimize product dimensional variability. Three major challenges of the multi-stage assembly processes are addressed: (i) high-dimensional design space; (ii) large and complex design space of each locator; and (iii) the nonlinear relations between locator positions, also called Key Control Characteristics, and Key Product Characteristics. The proposed methodology conducts two-step optimization based on the integration of Genetic Algorithm and Hammersley Sequence Sampling. First, Genetic Algorithm is used for design space reduction by determining the areas of optimal fixture locations in initial design spaces. Then, Hammersley Sequence Sampling uniformly samples the candidate sets of fixture layouts from the areas predetermined by GA for the optimum. The process yield and part instability index are design objectives in evaluating candidate sets of fixture layouts. An industrial case study illustrates and validates the proposed methodology.
