Leopardi nelle prime pagine dello Zibaldone aveva osservato che l’«amore dei lumi» induce la passione per la filosofia, facendone un elemento fondante della cultura moderna. Nessun dubbio che in questa prospettiva un posto di rilievo spetti allora al Candide di Voltaire, o al Rousseau che unisce pensar filosofico, istanze educative, passione politica e schermata autobiografia. Ma per passare dal conte al romanzo, dall’apologo e dai trattati a personaggi complessi che pure mantengono una forte allure speculativa, bisognava lasciare il Settecento, sperimentare il Romanticismo, nutrire nel secolo successivo le rêveries dei nuovi promeneurs solitaires con l’inquietudine e gli interrogativi di Dostoevskij, Kafka, Sartre, Camus, e di Pirandello, Proust, Musil…, di quanti hanno accompagnato la passione per il racconto con lo smascheramento di ogni ingannevole teodicea. Riconducendo il romanzo, a partire dall’ironica pensosità cervantina, ai borgesiani intrecci, alle ansie esistenziali. Ma, in assenza di dichiarazioni, dove trovare la prova della presenza del philosophique nel romanzo, o come individuare testi a cui si addica la definizione di roman philosophique? Questo libro, progettato e curato da Anna Dolfi, non solo pone il problema, ma tenta di rispondervi, mentre intreccia le idee del/da romanzo con le teorie costruttive, e attiva il confronto tra insignificante e significanza, emblemi e codici mitici, semiosi e destino, osservando come il linguaggio, nello sfilare degli autori, modifichi se stesso fino ad arrivare alla figuratività del graphic-novel. Punto estremo d’arrivo per un percorso che – per campioni – fissa significativi frammenti nel caleidoscopio per altri versi infinito del narrare.

This book focuses on two issues. First, it describes how the social significance of religion in its various facets has changed in modern societies. Second, it explains what factors and conditions have contributed to these changes. After discussing the two central concepts of the investigation, religion and modernity, the book presents the most important theories that deal with the relationship between the two. The empirical part, which constitutes the bulk of the book, begins by analysing religious change in selected countries in Western and Eastern Europe. For the sake of comparison, it then presents individual analyses of selected non-European cases (the US, South Korea), as well investigations of the global spread of Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism in Europe, the US, and in Brazil. On the basis of these selected case studies, which place as much emphasis on analysing the social, political, and economic contexts of religious changes as on capturing historical path dependencies, the book offers some general theoretical conclusions and identifies overarching patterns and determinants of religious change in modern and modernizing societies. In recent years, scholars of religion have become increasingly sceptical about the validity of secularization theory; the analyses contained in this book demonstrate, however, that tendencies of modernity such as functional differentiation, individualization, and pluralization are likely to inhibit the attractiveness and acceptance of religious affiliations, practices, and beliefs. Even Poland, Russia, the US, and South Korea, which have often been cited as prime examples of the vitality of religion in modern societies, display clear signs of religious decline.

This chapter discusses Prime Suspect's treatment of social problems and socially marginalized individuals. First, it briefly addresses the history of social problems and social realism film and television, and then notes the departure from such formats in British television of the 1970s onward as well as the general avoidance of social issue programming in US television throughout the years. It then analyzes Prime Suspect's treatment of social issues, in particular, how moments within episodes offer insights into the experiences of socially marginalized persons. Although the series often disrupts the binary between good and evil and destabilizes the white male dominance of the genre, it does not offer comprehensive, modernist policy solutions to social problems.

The first chapter of Hieroglyphic Modernisms exposes the complex history of Western misconceptions of Egyptian writing from antiquity to the present. Hieroglyphs bridge the gap between modern technologies and the ancient past, looking forward to the rise of new media and backward to the dispersal of languages in the mythical moment of the Tower of Babel. The contradictory ways in which hieroglyphs were interpreted in the West come to shape the differing ways that modernist writers and filmmakers understood the relationship between writing, film, and other new media. On the one hand, poets like Ezra Pound and film theorists like Vachel Lindsay and Sergei Eisenstein use the visual languages of China and of Egypt as a more primal or direct alternative to written words. But Freud, Proust, and the later Eisenstein conversely emphasize the phonetic qualities of Egyptian writing, its similarity to alphabetical scripts. The chapter concludes by arguing that even avant-garde invocations of hieroglyphics depend on narrative form through an examination of Hollis Frampton’s experimental film Zorns Lemma.

One of the liveliest debates in contemporary philosophy concerns the notions of grounding and metaphysical explanation. Many consider these notions to be of prime importance for metaphysics and the philosophy of explanation, or even for philosophy in general, and lament that they had been neglected for far too long. Although the current debate about grounding is of recent origin, its central ideas have a long and rich history in Western philosophy, going back at least to the works of Plato and Aristotle. Bernard Bolzano’s theory of grounding, developed in the first half of the nineteenth century, is a peak in the history of these ideas. On Bolzano’s account, grounding lies at the heart of a broad conception of explanation encompassing both causal and non-causal cases. Not only does his theory exceed most earlier theories in scope, depth, and rigour, it also anticipates a range of ideas that take a prominent place in the contemporary debate. But despite the richness and modernity of his theory, it is known only by a comparatively small circle of philosophers predominantly consisting of Bolzano scholars. This book is meant to make Bolzano’s ideas on grounding accessible to a broader audience. The book gathers translations of Bolzano’s most important writings on these issues, including material that has hitherto not been available in English. Additionally, it contains a survey article on Bolzano’s conception and nine research papers critically assessing elements of the theory and/or exploring its broad range of applications in Bolzano’s philosophy and beyond.
