Nowadays, press-fitting is widely used in the manufacturing industry because it allows easy and fast installation and is repetitive, strong, and inherently reliable. The quality of a press-fitting assembly can be verified from the press-fitting curves and forced monitoring. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the press-fitting curve with various interference railway wheelset models and determine the interference limit that axles can withstand at the maximum holding torque without slipping and without plastic deformation. A three-dimensional finite element analysis examined the maximum press-fitting force and stress distributions using Abaqus FEA software. The press-fitting curves of the railway wheel and axle assembly obtained from finite element simulation were classified following European Standard EN 13260. The press-fitting curves showed whether they fell within the boundary limits in the EN standard to allow their practical application. This study also showed when plastic deformation would occur, within the recommended interferences in the EN standard. Moreover, the effect of interference was numerically simulated for the maximum holding torque capacity within the EN standard interference range. Numeric simulation was compared with the theory: the deviation was 15–6%.

To improve the fatigue strength of the roller chain, the fatigue test is conducted by varying the press-fitting ratio between the pin and the holed plate. To model what occurs in a chain under load, a single plate specimen is prepared by press-fitting two pins into two holes at the ends of the plate. The FEM analysis is performed to obtain the stress amplitude and the average stress. The results, in both cases demonstrate that the fatigue strength is improved by the press-fit between the pin and the hole. The fatigue improvement mechanism is discussed based on the stress analysis.

This paper is a critical notice of a recent significant contribution to the debate about fitting attitudes and value, namely Toni Rønnow-Rasmussen’s Personal Value (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011). In this book, Rønnow-Rasmussen seeks to analyse the notion of personal value—an instance of the notion of good for a person—in terms of fitting attitudes. The paper has three main themes: (i) Rønnow-Rasmussen’s discussion of general problems for fitting attitude analyses; (ii) his formulation of the fitting attitude analysis of personal value and the notion of ‘for someone’s sake (fss) attitudes’; and (iii) his critique of the dichotomy between agent-neutral and agent-relative reasons.

Анотація:
Although railway axles are a crucial part of railway vehicles, they are susceptible to long-term failure because of repeated loads. The aim of this research is to investigate the stress intensity factor (SIF) of a surface elliptical crack on a high-speed railway axle under various operating conditions. The study employs numerical analysis to explore the impact of press-fitting, rotary bending, stable and adverse running conditions on the SIF solutions. The main findings demonstrate that adverse running conditions, such as the press-fitting force, asymmetric vehicle weight, lateral force and wheel-rail contact force, can significantly increase the SIF values and result in axle failure. The press-fitting effect and rotary bending also have a significant impact on the SIF values, highlighting their importance in the railway axle design and analysis. The outcome of this research emphasizes the significance of accurately estimating SIF values to ensure the safe and reliable performance of railway axles in adverse operating conditions.

The success of prostheses is highly dependent upon load transfer and bone stresses. Reflection photoelasticity is a viable technique for measuring stress patterns in vitro. However, when a cementless stem is tested, the resultant stresses under load are the sum of the implantation stresses and of those induced by load application. Separating these two components is a critical issue that so far has not been thoroughly solved using photoelasticity. Implantation strains and strain under load were measured separately by a suitable procedure: the photoelastic coating was applied to the femur after stem press-fitting. Thus, when an external load is applied (e.g. to simulate a physiological activity), the fringe patterns indicate the effect of the external load alone. Implantation strains are measured independently, after load removal; the stem is extracted and stresses are released, causing a new fringe pattern. The method was used to investigate the stress pattern caused by press-fitting of two cementless hip stems and that caused by a load applied to the implanted femora. Different isochromatic and isoclinic patterns were observed for the strain distribution caused by load application and by press-fitting for two stem designs. Differences in press-fit pattern and load transfer were successfully detected between the two designs.

The machine is one of the main factors of production whose role is very important in order to produce a product that conforms to the specifications set by a machine, with the amount and capacity of the machine's production. Reliability is the design of a component so that components can work according to function, without any failure, in accordance with the process already set. Screw press is a fitting machine used to squeeze moss brondolan ripe with press system and used to separate crude oil from crushed flesh (mesocarp) by squeezing. Research done on Screw Press machine that its role is quite high in PT. Perkebunan Nusantara XIII. The method used is Reliability with MTTR Method. From the calculation results obtained reliability value Screw Press engine in 2015 has the highest reliability value of 1.6408 at the time of calculation of 383.75 hours and in 2016 has a reliability value of 0.7239 at the time of calculation 415.83 hours. Screw Press engine reliability value in 2016 is higher than 2015, it is proven that the life of Screw Press engine in 2016 is more dominant than in 2015. Анотація:
Extrusion of a clay body is the most applied process in the ceramic industries for manufacturing structural blocks. Nowadays, the assembly of such blocks through a fitting system is gaining attention owing to the saving in material and reducing in the cost of the building construction. However, this fitting system requires a press-molding, rather than extrusion, to allow blocks to be fabricated with different shapes. In this work, the ideal composition of clay bodies incorporated with granite powder waste was investigated for the production of press-molded ceramic blocks. An experimental design was applied to determine the optimum properties and microstructures. Press load of 15 ton and temperatures from 850 to 1050°C were considered. The results indicated that mechanical strength of 30 MPa and water absorption of 15% could be attained with the incorporation of up to 17% of granite powder waste.

This report was written as a result of a Bachelor Degree Project, together with Swepart Transmission AB. The report contains the construction of a hydraulic press for the assembly operation.

The project started with a new construction of a hydraulic press for the bearings’ assembly. The goal within the thesis work was to fit the three bearings to the housing by only one press motion. This operation should be very safety because of the sensitive tolerance at the bearings and housing. Construction of the cylinders, rams and bolster were the most important parts at this project because this parts’ functions are very important for this assembly.

The next step of this thesis was to calculate the hydraulic press components’ parameters and then choose the suitable components. The focus was to choose more useful and reliable components.

The hydraulic press was modeled in the CAD program Solid Works and 2D technical drawing was drawn in the Autocad. The frame material was chosen and the frame was analysised in the Solid Works.

Cette thèse a pour objectif de proposer des modèles numériques permettant une meilleure compréhension du comportement en fatigue de l'assemblage roue-essieu ferroviaires.Un premier modèle simule l'opération de calage des roues sur les portées de l'essieu. Pour sa réalisation, une attention particulière a été portée au comportement en friction entre la roue et l'essieu ce qui a notamment permis de montrer une dépendance du facteur de frottement à la pression de contact. Aussi, la simulation met en évidence la création d'une singularité géométrique en début d'opération ayant une influence sur la distribution de contraintes dans la structure.Ensuite, un modèle permet la simulation de la sollicitation cyclique multiaxiale subie par un assemblage roue/essieu éprouvette échelle 1. Un modèle de comportement pour l'acier EA1N, utilisé pour la fabrication des essieux, a été développé afin de traduire à la fois la réponse monotone et cyclique du matériau. Le choix d'un niveau de chargement élevé a permis à ce modèle de caractériser l'influence du contact en montrant une déformation importante de la portée lorsqu'il y a ouverture.Afin d'avoir un dimensionnement en fatigue compatible avec le bureau d'étude, la méthode des sauts de cycles a été choisie afin de calculer rapidement un état mécanique stabilisé. L'utilisation de cette méthode dans un premier temps sur un assemblage roue/essieu simplifié, puis sur un cas réel montre une bonne précision des résultats malgré une dépendance au raffinement locaux et au comportement matériau développé qui peut contraindre le temps de calcul.Enfin, on s'intéresse à la durée de vie en fatigue de la structure avec l'application d'un critère de fatigue sur l'état stabilisé. On propose également une discussion à partir de trajets de chargement, notamment sur l'apparition de cisaillement alterné sur la portée de l'essieu
The objective of this thesis is to propose numerical models allowing a better understanding of the fatigue behavior of the railway wheel-axle assembly.A first model simulates the press fit operation in the assembly of a railway axle and wheel. A particular attention was paid to the friction between the wheel and the axle, which notably made it possible to show a dependence of the friction factor on the contact pressure. Also, the simulation highlights the creation of a geometric singularity at the start of the operation having an influence on the distribution of stresses in the structure.Then, a model simulates the multiaxial cyclic stress on a scale 1 test specimen wheel/axle assembly. A behavior model for the EA1N steel, used for the axles, was developed in order to be used for both monotonic and cyclic problems. This model, with a high loading level, shows a significant deformation of the wheel seat with the contact opening.The skipped cycles method was chosen in order to quickly calculate a stabilized mechanical state. The use of this method initially on a simplified wheel/axle assembly, then on a real case shows good precision of the results despite a dependence on local refinement and the developed material behavior which can constrain the calculation time.Finally, we calculate the fatigue strength of the structure with the application of a fatigue criterion. We also propose a discussion based on loading paths, in particular on the appearance of alternating shear on the wheel seat

Currently, industrial robot arms are trending in prefabricated building construction; however, a notable gap exists in established automated processes and related research specifically for the insertion of batt thermal insulation. The current method for accomplishing this task relies on manual insertion, which is labour-intensive for the workers and poses long-term health and safety concerns. This research presents an ongoing research project aimed at developing a feasible robotic process for the automated insertion of batt thermal insulation into prefabricated light-frame wood wall frames. This research focuses on the utilization of a single 6-degree-of-freedom robot arm for the insertion process, complimented by the design of a custom-built end-effector. The proposed robotic insertion process, named GLITPP, comprises of six major steps: (1) Grasp, (2) Lift, (3) Insert, (4) Tilt, (5) Push, and (6) Press. The GLITPP insertion process, along with the custom-built end-effector effectively mitigates the influence of the insulation’s nonlinear mechanical properties, while also taking collision avoidance into consideration. This ensures a tight-fitting insulation within the frame cavity, without visible gaps and deficiencies. The necessary physical operating parameters for the insertion process, such as angles, offset, and force requirements, are identified to ensure the precision, efficiency, and repeatability of insertion. A prototype of the designed end-effector is used to demonstrate and validate the robotic method, achieved a high success rate of 93.3%. The development of this research will further advance the complete automation of light-frame wood wall panel prefabrication, offering the industry a wider range of options for selecting thermal insulation for their processes

Surrogate models are commonly used to replace expensive simulations of engineering problems. Frequently, a single surrogate is chosen based on past experience. Previous work has shown that fitting multiple surrogates and picking one based on cross-validation errors (PRESS in particular) is a good strategy, and that cross validation errors may also be used to create a weighted surrogate. In this paper, we discuss whether to use the best PRESS solution or a weighted surrogate when a single surrogate is needed. We propose the minimization of the integrated square error as a way to compute the weights of the weighted average surrogate. We find that it pays to generate a large set of different surrogates and then use PRESS as a criterion for selection. We find that the cross validation error vectors provide an excellent estimate of the RMS errors when the number of data points is high. Hence the use of cross validation errors for choosing a surrogate and for calculating the weights of weighted surrogates becomes more attractive in high dimensions. However, it appears that the potential gains from using weighted surrogates diminish substantially in high dimensions.
