This essay uses the case of scientific psychology to explore modes of description and the broader objectives underlying these modes, reporting on both the complexities and potentials of psychological description. It examines the description techniques of the classic Milgram experiment and offers a redescription of the resulting data to show both how psychology’s practices of description entail more than objective accounts of observed behavior and how these descriptions can influence the social world and our understandings of ourselves. The case of Stanley Milgram’s experiments in obedience suggest the material and social powers of the descriptions psychologists “give away” for human benefit.

This paper provides a description of the health practices that are provided for prisoners in a large rural prison. It takes a model of health promotion using a settings approach to describe these practices and includes descriptions of the barriers to implementing health promoting practices. This paper is concerned only with the health impact of the prison on prisoners, and does not attempt to explore any health issues related to staff. It is also beyond the scope of this paper to consider the impact of privatisation on attempts to improve health in prisons. This paper provides a description of how one prison delivers, or fails to deliver, good public health to its prisoners.

Aims The study investigated critical biosecurity control points and dairy farmers’ motivations towards biosecurity practices among selected dairy farmers across Australia. Methods A questionnaire template was administered via an online survey. A three-stage process was used to develop the questionnaire by pooling of potential questions, selection and reduction of the questions to fit an 8–10 min survey. Key results A total of 55 responses were obtained. Mixed species rearing was practiced on 69% of the farms, with a majority keeping either sheep or beef cattle within the same property as dairy cattle. Approximately half of the farms (49%) did not provide formal training to new staff on aspects of animal health, as well as not conducting bull breeding soundness. Most of the farms (98%) required staff to use personal protective equipment, such as overalls and gumboots, but only a few of the farms (34%) had designated areas to clean footwear and a system for recording visitors (17%). Record keeping pertaining to animal health, maintenance of good fences and use of vendor declaration forms was practiced in a majority of the farms. The practice of quarantining new stock before mixing with other stock was practiced in only 45% of the farms. Monthly herd health visits by a veterinarian were utilised by 55% of the farms. Multivariable analysis showed positive significant associations between mixed species rearing with the practice of regular pest control (P = 0.004) and use of footbaths (P = 0.024) and no biosecurity plan (P = 0.025). Furthermore, a positive significant association was also recorded on the presence of a biosecurity plan and the presence of a designated area to clean footwear (P = 0.002) and no regular deworming (P = 0.024). Animal and human health reasons were the main motivators for implementing and maintaining ‘best practice’ biosecurity practices, whereas government regulation was the lowest motivator. Conclusions It is concluded that the biosecurity practices were variable, and animal and human health reasons were the primary motivators for instituting biosecurity practices. Implications There is a need to continue educating farmers on the importance of biosecurity practices.

What are seen to be important basic considerations and logical foundations underpinning the sorts of discussions, decisions, and actions that might be undertaken in description are identified and elaborated.

Background: The pandemic makes online learning methods the right choice so that the learning process can continue. The learning methods in universities generally consist of the lecture/lecturer method and the skill lab method. The online practicum method is packaged in audio-visual form but has the disadvantage that the opportunity for red-demonstration cannot be carried out optimally due to limited tools and materials as well as supporting facilities. This is one of the factors that can affect student learning motivation to decrease. Methods: This study used a retrospective descriptive research design. The population to be studied is the students of the Department of Nursing at Jenderal Soedirman University using the Stratified Random Sampling technique and obtained 183 respondents. This study uses a questionnaire regarding the ARCS-V Motivation model (Keller 2016) which has been modified. Data analysis to be carried out is univariate analysis. Results: The results of the study that students' learning motivation towards online learning was included in the low category, quite a lot, namely there were 27 students (14.75%). 133 students (72.68%) with moderate learning motivation and 23 students (12.57%) with high learning motivation. Conclusion: The results showed that students' learning motivation towards online learning was included in the medium-high category range. This shows that online practicum can increase learning motivation. Online practicum is a solution for practical learning methods in the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between human resource management (HRM) practices and post-promotion performance of managers from subordinates’ perspective. Design/methodology/approach – For the study, survey methodology was used and 391 respondents who fulfilled selection criteria set for the study responded. The hypothesised relationships were examined by regression analysis. Findings – It was found that the job description and promotion practices have significant relationship with post-promotion performance. Practical implications – The findings imply the importance of promotion practices and the need of maintaining and using job descriptions in facilitating post-promotion performance. Originality/value – Several previous studies investigated the post-promotion managerial performance based on mathematical modelling and single firm case studies. However, it is very rare to find academic research that investigated the relationship between HRM practices and post-promotion performance of managers.

The implications of sociography for thinking with global environmental problems are foregrounded by Bruno Latour in Down to Earth. In order to deal with the metamorphosis of the world and take into account multiplying viewpoints, Latour argues sociologists must shift the focus of enquiry from theoretical analyses of environmental problems to descriptions of the existence of environmental issues in experimental settings, local shared spaces and common practices. Taking up Latour’s challenge of description from the bottom up, this article examines London’s #OneLess refill water fountain pilot project initiated in 2018 to reduce plastic water bottle consumption, as an example of how scientists are at the forefront of assembling the public existence of environmental problems in local settings. Addressing my participant observation in the refill experiment, the article highlights the methodological challenges the #OneLess pilot poses for generating descriptions of what it means to engage with environmental issues sociographically. By engaging description as a methodological problem, the article examines the strengths and limitations of existing descriptive approaches and develops a different way of deploying a sociographical imagination that attempts to make sense of hesitation as a transformative practice of environmental knowledge production.

Abstract:In Practice Theory and International Relations, Silviya Lechner and Mervyn Frost make a useful distinction between ‘praxis’ and ‘practices’ and correctly insist on the importance of describing the identity of distinct practices. They also make the important point that practices have ethical value for their participants. There is much to like about Lechner and Frost’s argument, including its solid philosophical grounding. However, from the perspective of a social scientist, there are some points of concern as well. First, while they champion ‘description’, they settle for ‘naming’ practices. Proper description requires more attention to detail than what the authors offer in the book. Second, the authors appear to discriminate between social practices in spatial terms rather than in functional terms. As a consequence, they end up with a description of the practices of international relations, where the different practices are all animated by the same value of freedom. As such, Lechner and Frost offer a reductionist interpretation of the ethical significance of international practices. Third, the authors push their anti-foundationalism too far. When one interprets the (ethical) significance of social practices, it is useful to bring on board philosophical–anthropological models, even if only because it opens up one’s interpretive horizons.

Ethnomethodologists have emphasized the pragmatic and contextual nature of description as a variety of social practice, and have suggested the ramifications of this insight for the methodology and philosophy of the social sciences. However, ethnomethodologists have thereby invited difficult questions about the moral and analytic status of their own descriptions. Drawing on Atkinson’s study of suicide verdicts and Coulter’s writings on schizophrenia, ethnomethodological scholarship is shown to display the possibility and promise of disinterested description, even when the subject matter involves the evaluation of problematic actions and identities. The combination of Wittgensteinian logical grammar and empirical studies of natural language use, suggested by Coulter, is presented as especially relevant and remarkable for purposes of studying social practices including describing, naming, categorizing, classifying, labeling, diagnosing, reaching a verdict, and kindred practices of language use conceived as varieties of practical action.

Abstract The organization of sweet potato research across global regions began in earnest in the 1980s. Leading international institutions, notably the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, recognized the potential for science-driven development of a “neglected” crop. Sweet potato was second only to potato in root crop cultivation worldwide and the top tuber in Asia yet had not been subject to the internationally coordinated research that its importance merited. This article explores how scientists involved in sweet potato research attempted to respond to the call for new international research and development efforts while avoiding the limitations of predecessor programs associated with the Green Revolution. It highlights the challenges inherent in this work by focusing on ambitions for—and challenges to—providing standardized information about samples of varieties used in research and entered into gene bank collections. As scientists and institutions grappled with critiques of the top-down model of development, many sought to address these through more inclusive research practices. As the article shows, accommodating diversity in crops and among cultivators and cultures entailed costs that ultimately limited the longevity and effectiveness of some enterprises that sought to maximize inclusivity.

The article discusses the challenges of implementing an evidence-based approach in the field of psychological and social practices. The role of the “Standard of Evidence of Social Practices in the Sphere of Childhood” for the formation of a complex of collaborating science-based practice and practice-oriented science is considered. Four key areas of practice analysis are discussed: the regulation of practice, its validity, the effectiveness of practice (achievement of social results), the validity of data on the social results of practice. Based on the experience of expertise, the authors highlight several methodological difficulties faced by developers of practices in the process of their evidence-based description and presentation: difficulties in highlighting the essence of interventions that lead to change; difficulties in finding theoretical foundations for practices; lack of skills in building a logical framework; difficulties in finding research tools to assess the effects of practices. As an example of a successful, in the opinion of the authors, resolution of these methodological difficulties, a description of the social practice “Do not spill the water” (as in meaning “Thick as Thieves”) of the Charity Foundation “Our Children”.

Abstract The unprecedented growth of audiovisual translation practices in the creative industries has boosted the role of creativity which has taken centre stage and become the emblem of global cultural policies. The study addresses the role of creativity in the digital space of Netflix as a means of cross-cultural mediation and communication, and as a multidimensional tool in audio description (AD), in order to provide the end-users (the blind and visually impaired audiences) of digital audiovisual products with participatory and engaging forms of access to the audiovisual ‘planet’. The aim is to investigate whether and how creativity is used to transmit culture-specific references (CSRs) from a translation perspective within a highly discussed TV series streamed on Netflix. To do so, the rendering of the most significant CSRs in the Korean Netflix series Squid Game (SG) as transferred into the English and Italian ADs will be examined.

Nursing as a medical professional has the right to carry out independent nursing practice. The legal aspects of independent nursing practice are regulated by Indonesian legislation. The knowledge of nurses, especially nurses who carry out independent nursing practices, is different. This knowledge is important to prevent violations of legal aspects. Based on this, the purpose of this study was to find out the description of the legal aspects of independent nursing practice owned by alumni of the DIII Nursing study program who carried out independent nursing practices. The respondents of this study were 5 alumni who had independent nursing practices. This research method is to use qualitative methods with data triangulation analysis methods. The results of the study obtained 6 themes regarding knowledge of the legal aspects of independent nursing practice including licensing, types of services, practice authority, rights and obligations, witnesses, regulatory developments.

The process is designed to answer specific questions: Does the applicant have the experience, education, and skills necessary to successfully perform the job? The nurse manager must develop and advertise a current job description, review applications, and interview with that job description in mind. An additional goal for the nurse manager is to create a process that is fair, objective, non-biased, and non-discriminatory, and that will result in a successful match between the new employee and the health service.

Relevance. The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation has issued guidelines for ensuring a school theatre operating in every school. The task arising out of these guidelines for the researches of theatre practices in education is to find sociocultural deficits which can be eliminated by the means of theatre projects and to provide practical theatrical forms for solving the issues. The relevance of the study is defined by the need for clear directions on how to implement drama in education. The aim of the article is to provide psychological and pedagogical analysis of theatre practices in education as well as to highlight their educational value. Objective. The purpose of the work is to present a psychological and pedagogical analysis of the educational resource of theatrical and pedagogical practices. To achieve this goal, the article provides a phenomenological description and analysis of three implemented theatrical educational projects. Sample. The material for the analysis was the graduation qualification projects of undergraduates of the programme ‘Theater Pedagogy and Directing the Educational Environment’ of Moscow City University. In this analysis, particular attention was given to the description of the goals and results of the projects. Graduates of 2022 whose works belong to three different types of educational situations were selected as respondents. Projects of the three types were involved: a project implemented in general education, a project of extra education, and an educational project implemented in professional theater Methods. In preparing the work, the method of free interview was used, which made it possible to collect information about the projects implemented by undergraduates. It is important that this type of interview allows you to use not only the researcher's own conclusions, but also the experience of people directly related to the subject of research. Results. The results of this work are presented in the form of case studies considered in the advanced training courses for teachers and in the master's classes in the profile: ‘Theater Pedagogy and Directing the Educational Environment’ of Moscow City University. It is planned to further formalize the results of the study in the form of methodological recommendations for teaching staff. Conclusions. The article presents a general analysis that allows us to draw a conclusion about the existing socio-cultural deficits that impede the development of personal and meta-subject competencies of students of different ages, as well as a description of specific areas of possible psychological and pedagogical work of theatre practices in education.

This experience report addresses the practices of the Central Library team at Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) in the Laboratory of Informational Accessibility and Inclusion (LAII) in facing the challenges of informational accessibility for visually impaired individuals, focusing on the Moradores da Florestaexhibition. It is a qualitative and descriptive study that discusses the results in light of academic production in Information Science and Librarianship. A bibliographic review was conducted to understand best practices in audio description, detailing the steps taken. The keywords audio description, accessibility, and image guided the research of guidelines and methodologies. The study concludes by highlighting the relevance of informational accessibility for inclusion, demonstrating how LAII uses audio description to make visual information accessible, sharing important practices to promote equal access to information.

The article offers an analysis of the specifics of the formation of the evidence-based approach in our country. Long-term lack of evidence-based social practices. The entire volume of problems is divided by the authors into two large blocks: a software interface connected to each other. The article examines methodological methods of complexity with the identification of a set of actions necessary and sufficient for changes, a description of the mechanism that constitutes the essence of the intervention, the scientific and theoretical justification of the practice and the complexity associated with the process of collecting and analyzing empirical data on intervention on safe ones. In conclusion, it is concluded that the introduction of an evidence-based approach into the social sphere is an important condition for social practice.

Traditionally, archival description remained distinct from bibliographic description due to differences in material format, usage, and professional traditions. However, archival descriptive standards and practice have undergone numerous changes in recent years. This evolution is in part due to the advent of MARC and its adoption by the academic archives community. How much influence has the use of MARC and overall bibliographic description had on academic archival description as well as on the collaboration between traditional catalogers and archivists? To address this question, this article presents the findings of a landscape survey of the Association of Research Libraries members' descriptive practices surrounding MARC records, linked and embedded metadata, and authority records. Survey responses indicate that archival descriptive work remains concentrated in the archival domain, with archivists creating description as one component of job responsibilities at most institutions. Descriptive work—including MARC record creation—has not been passed off to cataloging colleagues despite their longer professional experience with the standard even though the OPAC is the most commonly cited archival information system available to respondents. Decisions about appropriate levels of description, standards to be employed, workflows, and other factors related to archival description do not appear to rely on external buy-in or approval in most repositories, and descriptive practices employ a mix of standards from both the archival and bibliographic traditions. These and other findings provide a baseline understanding of current archival descriptive practices and workflows, enhancing our ability to improve archival description and therefore findability and access to archival materials.

The article presents the philosophical foundations and the ethnographic guidance necessary to develop the activity. The analysis of the results was done considering and interpreting student’s written and oral feedback. Results are shown in a positive light since the activity described is understood as a tool to facilitate and improve the awareness of the law students by making them reflect about the concrete practices, symbols and interactions in the professional field.

Improving educational outcomes for students with disabilities and others who struggle in school largely depends on teachers who can deliver effective instruction. Although many effective practices have been identified to address the academic and behavioral needs of students who struggle in school, including those with disabilities, these practices are not used extensively in classrooms. This article provides a rationale for and description of major changes that are occurring in teacher preparation programs that are designed to improve the practice of beginning teachers. This is followed by a description of a set of high-leverage practices that was recently approved by the Council for Exceptional Children. These practices represent an initial attempt to delineate a core curriculum for special education teacher preparation to support the changes that are occurring in teacher education.

Sustainability approaches have a special significance in terms of ensuring a long-term and balanced multi-dimensional urban development. The purpose of the study is to reveal and describe the main features of sustainable urban development in the United States in terms of urban policymaking and practical implementation. In the theoretical part of the paper, various interpretations of sustainable urban development and sustainable cities were discussed and summarized. Meanwhile, a brief description of the current state of global urbanization processes was given. Through secondary data analysis (governmental reports, descriptions of missions and target activities, legislative acts, etc.), comparison and generalization, the main actors (governmental bodies at federal level) and priorities of the U.S. urban policy with a special focus on sustainability were identified and discussed. In addition, the framework of the U.S. sustainable urban development policymaking was suggested and generalized. Different city rankings (based on sustainable development goals, green development, etc.) reveal the leading role of Pacific Coast urban areas, Washington D.C., Boston and New York City in terms of urban sustainability practices. Various urban innovations are implemented in the same and other urban areas, promoting the further development of smart sustainable city concept in the United States.

For those whose stories are in the archives, accessing them can prompt many emotions and reactions. People accessing these records, and those processing and providing access to them, may be affected by their contents. There are many things we can do as archivists and archival institutions to make this process easier, more accessible, and safer for those who experience direct or intergenerational trauma. The profession has access to a growing selection of tools to guide our protocols and practices, such as the Tandanya Declaration, the ATSILIRN protocols and UNDRIP, as well as case studies for high-level institutional changes and cultural shifts, though this process is arguably only at the beginning of its collective journey. However, there are often immediate and practical ways in which we can implement anti-racist archival practice, including the way we describe archival materials. This paper will discuss practical ways in which archivists can actively undertake anti-racist description work, and why it is imperative that this work becomes a priority in our collection management work. It will draw on the comprehensive document Anti-Racist Description Resources, authored by the Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia’s (A4BLiP) Anti-Racist Description Working Group, as well as other standards and sources.

The article applies K. Geertz scientific approach of ‘detailed description’ to a modern urban wedding. The work is based on materials of field research into the marriage practices among young Perm families. The research techniques included semi-formal interviews and case-studies of 26 persons (13 families) during the period 2016–2020. These qualitative methods were necessary to get information about an important life event: from the first meeting a future partner to the wedding ceremony. Such methods helped identify cultural bases for the bride and groom’s practices. The paper provides a detailed interpretation of only one case, consisting of several narrative sections. Every narrative is a personal view of the participant at the wedding ceremony. The narrative “wedding as a drama” shows a woman’s interpretation of the celebration. The bride’s story has some negative connotations. The bride expresses rejection of the wedding procedure and some of its attributes. The narrative “wedding as a holiday” represents the man’s view. The groom’s comments contain mostly positive connotations. His story highlights the status elements of the celebration. He stresses his family’s contribution to the wedding ceremony. Analyzing both narratives, an additional aspect of the topic was explored: “wedding as a parents’ project”. It shows the older generation’s role in the organization of the wedding. In addition, the paper describes some stories which are repeated in the narratives, including various forms of objectification, gender roles in the young family, and shifting of social roles.

In general, the general description of the Employability Skills of the XII DPIB class XII students has a tendency of "High Enough", and there is influence Industrial Work Practices on Employability Skills of class XII DPIB students significantly.

In this paper, we compare critical practices on the Danish fishery inspection ship The West Coast to such practices at the Nordic Folk Center for Renewable Energy. These cases are the ingredients for examining the role of critique in organizational experimentation and research. Taking our point of departure in a notion of critique as finding the right proximity introduced by Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway, we discuss alternatives to critique as based on a position detached from the object of critique. Our analysis shows that critique is immanent to the practices we study and already to some extent conceptualized by the practitioners. To further problematize the already ongoing critical engagements in the organizations we study, we relate our ethnographic descriptions to work done on infra critique (Verran, Willerslev). In conclusion, the relation between the notion of critique as infra-critic and scholarly critical practices is commented on. We find proximation to be a useful concept as an infra critical description of ongoing experimentation with professional identities and organizational boundaries.

Scientific workflows facilitate the automation of data analysis tasks by integrating various software and tools executed in a particular order. To enable transparency and reusability in workflows, it is essential to implement the FAIR principles. Here, we describe our experiences implementing the FAIR principles for metabolomics workflows using the Metabolome Annotation Workflow (MAW) as a case study. MAW is specified using the Common Workflow Language (CWL), allowing for the subsequent execution of the workflow on different workflow engines. MAW is registered using a CWL description on WorkflowHub. During the submission process on WorkflowHub, a CWL description is used for packaging MAW using the Workflow RO-Crate profile, which includes metadata in Bioschemas. Researchers can use this narrative discussion as a guideline to commence using FAIR practices for their bioinformatics or cheminformatics workflows while incorporating necessary amendments specific to their research area.

Abstract Audio description is increasingly used by museums to improve access to their collections by visually impaired visitors. However, research in this field is still very limited. This paper aims to report on a descriptive study of artwork audio description as a modality of intersemiotic translation from images into words. A corpus comprising audio descriptive guides from art museums in the United Kingdom and the United States was compiled and analyzed following a corpus-based methodology. Existing audio descriptions of art museum exhibits were shown to comply with existing guidelines regarding the type of visual information conveyed, the level of detail offered, and the point of view used. These results are discussed in relation to the communication context to contribute to the discussion of current practices and their implications for visually impaired people’s access to visual art.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is the most important ocular disease of cattle. Prevention and control of the disease can prove challenging, and the list of potential etiologic agents has expanded in recent years. Little has been recently published characterizing IBK outbreaks at the herd level. This case series investigation was conducted to describe the disease characteristics and management practices in herds affected by IBK outbreaks in 1 practice area in West Virginia in 2019. Seven producers were interviewed: 6 cowcalf producers and 1 stocker producer. Producers were asked questions pertaining to disease severity and management, such as herd health protocols and husbandry. In addition, organisms from each of the herds were identified by culture and/or PCR. Results revealed a range of disease incidence as well as similarities and differences in management practices among herds. The interpretability of results is limited due to small sample size and data collection method; however, results suggest that some herds in the area where producerswere interviewed experienced severe IBK outbreaks, and that some management practices relevant to IBK were similar between herds. Results also suggest that further study to identify poorly characterized IBK risk factors is warranted.

AbstractBackground: Business Process Modelling (BPM) is one of the most important phases of information system design. Business Process (BP) meta-models allow capturing informational and behavioural aspects of business processes. Unfortunately, standard BP meta-modelling approaches focus just on process description, providing different BP models. It is not possible to compare and identify related daily practices in order to improve BP models. This lack of information implies that further research in BP meta-models is needed to reflect the evolution/change in BP. Considering this limitation, this paper introduces a new BP meta-model designed by Business Process and Practice Alignment Meta-model (BPPAMeta-model). Our intention is to present a meta-model that addresses features related to the alignment between daily work practices and BP descriptions. Objectives: This paper intends to present a metamodel which is going to integrate daily work information into coherent and sound process definitions. Methods/Approach: The methodology employed in the research follows a design-science approach. Results: The results of the case study are related to the application of the proposed meta-model to align the specification of a BP model with work practices models. Conclusions: This meta-model can be used within the BPPAM methodology to specify or improve business processes models based on work practice descriptions.

HIGHLIGHTS Midwifery services are carried out by combining conventional and complementary midwifery services Types of complementary therapies applied by 52% of independent midwifery services in Surabaya consisted of aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, herbal medicine, baby massage and spa, maternity massage, oxytocin massage, and yoga. ABSTRACT Objectives: This study aimed to describe the implementation of complementary therapy among the independent midwifery practices in Surabaya, Indonesia. Materials and Methods: Employing a quantitative approach with a survey methodology, this study involved data collection through surveys administered to independent midwives practicing in Surabaya and midwives affiliated with independent midwifery practices. The questionnaires were containing the characteristics of the participants, the implementation of complementary therapies, and the complementary therapies integrated into the practice settings. Results: The findings revealed that 25 midwives (comprising 52%) provided complementary midwifery services, whereas 23 midwives (comprising 48%) abstained from incorporating complementary midwifery services into their independent midwifery practices. The types of complementary therapies implemented consisted of aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, herbal medicine, baby massage and spa, maternity massage, oxytocin massage, and yoga. Conclusion: This study concluded that 52% of independent midwives in Surabaya applied complementary therapy into their practices.
