Over the past 7 decades, there have been persistent but marginalized voices within our field calling for clinicians to be trained and competent in culturally responsive approaches to treatment and supervision. The voices are myriad. Yet these voices have consistently been diminished. Despite scholarly work to support the call for practitioners to incorporate training and practices that recognize race, ethnic heritage, racism, socio‐economic status, power, and privilege as key elements that contribute to the unique challenges and strengths of the patients we serve, the predominant assessments, interventions, and supervisory curricula remain devoid of such inclusion.

Before coming to Notre Dame, I had little experience in conversing with those who represent a different background than my own. Raised in private schools with little diversity, I spent my time learning about the oppressed rather than interacting with them directly. This past semester, I took a course called “Writing for Social Justice” in which I had the opportunity to interview Sheila, a blind woman living in the South Bend area. Through a series of interviews, I had the privilege to hear Sheila’s story. Sheila’s life history consists of HIV, drug abuse, compassion, loss, and empowerment. Interacting directly with Sheila, a woman who represents a reality much different from my own, taught me the value in listening; I now realize that optimal human growth arises with an open mind and heart. Sheila’s battle with HIV and other unjustified trauma led me to research the impact of HIV on the African American community further. This essay celebrates the strength of Sheila while emphasizing that HIV remains a disproportional threat to African American individuals. By sharing Sheila's story, I hope to demonstrate the power in a different reality and encourage others to listen with empathy.

There are very few sources available to historians which allow us to hear the voices of Anglo-American women. How can we understand what ordinary women believed were their responsibilities to their families and communities and the responsibilities of their government to them? Petitions provide historians with one of the few opportunities to “hear” non-elite women voice their concerns. In provincial New Hampshire, women regularly approached the royal government with individual requests. By viewing the rights associated with petitioning, the procedure involved, and the variety of applications for petition use, female agency in colonial society becomes more apparent. Through petitions, it is possible to understand under what circumstances women turned to the government for assistance, and under what circumstances the government granted their petitions.

In South African Human Rights Commission v Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd 2023 (3) SA 36 (CC), the Constitutional Court held that a bank is not obliged to take a foreclosure matter to the magistrate’s court, even if the magistrate’s court has jurisdiction over the matter. The apex court confirmed that a court is not entitled to decline to hear a matter properly brought before it because another court has concurrent jurisdiction. Before this decision, the Gauteng and Eastern Cape Divisions of the High Court both found that the High Court was entitled to decline to hear a matter if the matter fell within the jurisdiction of a magistrate’s court. These decisions were taken on appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal, which upheld the appeal and found that the High Court has no power to refuse to hear a matter falling within its jurisdiction on the ground that another court has concurrent jurisdiction. The Constitutional Court has now confirmed the decision by the Supreme Court of Appeal, finding that complex matters such as foreclosure applications deserve more judicial scrutiny, and ought to be heard by the High Court.

The authors examine consumer activism as a form of power used by individuals when they experience a perceived failure with organizational service performance. Consumer citizens demonstrate the power of their voices through digital vigilantism consisting of injurious and constructive digital content sharing. The authors use agency theory and power concepts to study an instance in which a public service provider breached consumer performance expectations. They study digital responses to the 2017 Charlottesville Unite the Right rally because an independent review found the public service providers culpable. Tweets (n = 73,649) were analyzed utilizing qualitative thematic coding, cluster analysis, and sentiment analysis. Consumer conversations (tweets) during and after the rally yielded five types of digital vigilantism characterized by the following consumer voice clusters: “Shame on them!”, “Hear ye, hear ye…”, “Can you believe this?”, “Let’s get ‘em!”, and “Do the right thing.” The authors also present a new facet of digital vigilantism represented by the pessimistic and optimistic power of consumer voice. Several proactive and reactive responses are presented for policy and practice when responding to digital vigilantism.

Research on prosodic influences on syntactic structures is particularly relevant in the context of modern media, where the quality and impact of speech are crucial. Contemporary news discourse is characterized by high competition for the audience's attention, so understanding the role of prosodic elements can aid in creating more engaging and effective content. With the rapid development of technology and changing ways of consuming information, researching such aspects of speech contributes to adapting news formats to the needs of the modern listener. The aim of this study is to analyze how intonation, rhythm, pauses, and stress can alter or emphasize syntactic constructions in speech, specifically in news discourse. The research methodology includes methods such as analysis, psycholinguistic methods, and content analysis. The study concludes that in news discourse, prosodic elements are essential for conveying information in a way that is understandable, attention-grabbing, and memorable for listeners. For example, a pause before important information or a rise in pitch to emphasize certain news can significantly affect audience perception. Prosody, which includes intonation, rhythm, and stress, plays a crucial role in shaping the perception and understanding of information by listeners. Specific examples from news programs are analyzed, where prosodic characteristics change or enhance the meaning of individual syntactic constructions. It has been established that the correct use of prosody can improve the communicative effectiveness and impact of news content. Cases are also examined where prosodic elements contribute to creating certain emotional reactions in listeners, thereby influencing their opinions about the presented information.

Scandalous racial ideas are woven into the very fabric of some of the most cherished concepts of modern biblical scholarship. In his book Racializing Jesus, Shawn Kelley argues that race plays an essential role in the construction of a dizzying amount of cherished scholarly categories. Central to his argument is the claim that the category of parable is decidedly problematic because it emerges from, and is rendered coherent by, some of the most toxic elements of modern racialized ideology. Parable scholarship has long drawn its fundamental interpretive ideas from specific, modern views concerning the nature and power of symbolic and metaphoric language. Unfortunately these categories have a long and rather unseemly history, and they derive their power from this history. Behind the moving language of art, freedom and higher consciousness lurk the less appealing world of nationalism, race and ethnic purity. Escaping the later almost certainly means, at least for a time, learning to live without the former. This means that New Testament scholars and historical Jesus scholars would do well to put aside the category of parable. Parable scholarship envisions the powerful words forcing the hearer to make a stark choice, but perhaps the choice belongs instead to the biblical scholars: embrace these aesthetic categories along with their deeply troubling ideological baggage, or give up on the scholarly category of parable in its entirety.

In this reflective essay, Alan McCullough Jr., Felton Morrell Jr., Bernard Thomas III, Vincente Waugh, and Nicholas Shubert with their teacher, Amy Donofrio, share the youth self-authorship methods that empowered them to transform their labels from “at-risk youth” to “at-hope youth leaders” in Jacksonville, Florida. After realizing that they had similar experiences with Jacksonville’s extreme violence and crime, they partnered to form the EVAC movement. The power of their shared stories led them from inviting officials to their classroom to hear their stories and collaborate for change to eventually speaking at the White House, meeting President Obama, making the front page of the New York Times, and presenting at Harvard University. In this reflection, the authors share how utilizing the power of youth storytelling in the context of a public school classroom can support youth to heal and lead community change, as well as the ways in which youth stories are dangerous—particularly to the systems of racism and oppression that their stories challenge.

About a quarter century ago, one could go to a conference in American history and hear a common lament from a group that was often referred to as “Cho’s lost tribe,” namely political historians who believed that they had been left to wander in an academic desert.' Historians of a certain persuasion and mostly of a certain generation could regularly' be heard bemoaning the eclipse of scholarship on formal politics by studies of labor, gender, and race, more interested in community formation, identity, representation, culture, and discourse than in power politics of policy7 making. Political historians offered a jeremiad, longing for a supposed golden age when their subdiscipline occupied the center of the profession.

There has been concern about possible effects of noise from power lines on reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) behaviour. Based on recent establishment of the reindeer audiogram and measurements of corona noise from two power lines of 300 kV and 420 kV, we found that reindeer are able to hear noise from power lines at frequencies above 250 Hz. A comparison with the human audiogram shows that humans are better able to perceive noise from power lines than reindeer, at least at the lowest frequencies. By simple comparisons of this kind, the perception of different types of sound by reindeer can be determined. Possible noise disturbances from human activities and constructions can be minimised if the intensity can be reduced for frequencies in the best hearing range of reindeer.

AbstractSpeaking truth ought to be normative in churches, and yet when it does, the foundations and structures of power are often shaken to the core. This paper explores the issues of identity and integrity in ecclesiology and is concerned with the ethical paradigms and moral frameworks that need to be in place if churches are to be places where honesty and truthfulness can be normative. Churches often fail as institutions because they presume they can conduct their affairs as organizations might. Churches become anger-averse, resisting the voices and experiences of victims, in order that the flow of power and its structures are unimpeded. At that point, churches become inherently committed to re-abusing victims and are unable to hear their pain and protests, which only leads to the perpetration of further abuse.

Objective To assess quality of life (QOL) in pediatric patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) with the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL 4.0) and the Hearing Environments and Reflection on Quality of Life 26 (HEAR-QL-26) and HEAR-QL-28 surveys. Study Design Prospective longitudinal study. Setting Tertiary care center. Subjects and Methods Surveys were administered to patients with SNHL (ages 2-18 years) from July 2016 to December 2018 at a multidisciplinary hearing loss clinic. Patients aged >7 years completed the HEAR-QL-26, HEAR-QL-28, and PedsQL 4.0 self-report tool, while parents completed the PedsQL 4.0 parent proxy report for children aged ≤7 years. Previously published data from children with normal hearing were used for controls. The independent t test was used for analysis. Results In our cohort of 100 patients, the mean age was 7.7 years (SD, 4.5): 62 participants had bilateral SNHL; 63 had mild to moderate SNHL; and 37 had severe to profound SNHL. Sixty-eight patients used a hearing device. Mean (SD) total survey scores for the PedsQL 4.0 (ages 2-7 and 8-18 years), HEAR-QL-26 (ages 7-12 years), and HEAR-QL-28 (ages 13-18 years) were 83.9 (14.0), 79.2 (11.1), 81.2 (9.8), and 77.5 (11.3), respectively. Mean QOL scores for patients with SNHL were significantly lower than those for controls on the basis of previously published normative data ( P < .0001). There was no significant difference in QOL between children with unilateral and bilateral SNHL or between children with SNHL who did and did not require a hearing device. Low statistical power due to small subgroup sizes limited our analysis. Conclusion It is feasible to collect QOL data from children with SNHL in a hearing loss clinic. Children with SNHL had significantly lower scores on validated QOL instruments when compared with peers with normal hearing.

Writing is one of the most influential ways to reach a target audience. It is through words that we can send a message of strength. Such writing often will lead to action, both positive and negative. The greatest power of writing is its ability to affect others with words. Written words are stronger and possess great emphasis compared to spoken words. Recognizing the power of the written word also means the importance of including structural parts to writing, such as sentence structure and more importantly, the thesis statement, which allows for the writer to persuade people prone to being skeptical to what they hear and read. Understanding how to include thesis statements, identifying points of view, and credibility writers can share their stories that allow for the power of the written word to prevail.

Arguably the most influential power the U.S. Supreme Court has is the power to choose which cases to decide. This power allows the nation’s only unelected branch of government to choose either to weigh in on key political controversies or avoid them completely. Here, I take one of the first case-level looks at the role of public opinion in the Court’s agenda-setting process. I argue justices vote to hear cases when they are likely to agree with public opinion on the outcome and eschew cases when they are out of step with the American people. However, the effect of public opinion depends on the political environment, especially on the level of public support the Court enjoys, the salience of the issue, and the case’s legal importance.

Given the unsurpassed sound sensitivity of mosquitoes among arthropods and the sound source power required for long-range hearing, we investigated the distance over which female mosquitoes detect species-specific cues in the sound of station-keeping mating swarms. A common misunderstanding, that mosquitoes cannot hear at long range because their hearing organs are ‘particle-velocity’ receptors, has clouded the fact that particle velocity is an intrinsic component of sound whatever the distance to the sound source. We exposed free-flying Anopheles coluzzii females to pre-recorded sounds of male An. coluzzii and An. gambiae s.s. swarms over a range of natural sound levels. Sound levels tested were related to equivalent distances between the female and the swarm for a given number of males, enabling us to infer distances over which females might hear large male swarms. We show that females do not respond to swarm sound up to 48 dB sound pressure level (SPL) and that louder SPLs are not ecologically relevant for a swarm. Considering that swarms are the only mosquito sound source that would be loud enough to be heard at long range, we conclude that inter-mosquito acoustic communication is restricted to close-range pair interactions. We also showed that the sensitivity to sound in free-flying males is much enhanced compared to that of tethered ones.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review houses America's trial-level immigration courts, which adjudicate hundreds of thousands of cases annually, many resulting in deportations. Most proceedings require interpretation and all rely heavily upon technology. Yet, we know little about communication and technology in these hearings, and even less about the views of attorneys who navigate this system daily. I examine the effects courtroom interpretation and technology have on immigrant voices as described in interviews with immigration attorneys representing clients facing deportation. Attorneys overwhelmingly characterize the court as procedurally unjust, pinpointing how flaws in interpretation, telephonic conferencing, and videoconferencing offer the illusion of due process. Drawing upon criminology, legal sociology, and linguistics, this study finds profound improvements are needed to ensure due process in the nation's immigration courts, including: Elimination of telephonic and videoconferencing in all but extreme circumstances. Modernization of telephonic and videoconference technology. Improvement of interpreter standards and working conditions. Education of attorneys, judges, and interpreters regarding challenges inherent to courtroom interpretation and technology. Although enhancing the quality of interpretation and technology protocols may improve immigrants’ access to justice in immigration court, meaningful immigration court reforms should reduce the need for an immigration court altogether.

In engineering, there are two primary heat transfer procedures of fluids namely, heating and cooling within a conduit that are well recognized. The heat transfer literacy remains a core component to design the heat exchangers. The study aims to present the consequences of drop shaped pin fin hear exchanger performance with four different fin dimensions. A rectangular duct with different drop-shaped pin fins dimensions is present in the heat exchanger, having similar heat transfer wetted surface area. ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 conducted three-dimensional finite volume to select the optimum pin fin dimension. The numerical results for the four cases L/D 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 indicated heat transfer had no effect on the variations in pin tail length; however, it affected frictional losses or pressure drop. There is significant decrease in the frictional loss as the result of increase in the pin tail length. The pun fin drop showed significant decrease in friction power, unlike the round pins. The ratio of pin height to the cylindrical portion of the pin (H/D) had major impact on the wetted surface area, which affects the rate of heat transfer.

This autoethnography, based on a cultural epistemology grounded in my lived experiences as Black and middle class, is written as an exploration of the communication practice of code-switching. It is the consideration of Du Bois’ double-consciousness as reflected in my language practices. It is a means to examine the development of my Black identity in an aggressively hegemonic society. Using Cross’ Black identity development model to structure and frame my inquiry, I examine my experiences with code-switching in both Black-dominated and White-dominated spaces to understand how the choice to use “Standard English” or Ebonics, depending on audience, reflects the tension inherent in the Black American identity. This autoethnography attempts to draw connections to how the intersection of oppressed identities results in power inequities that shape communication practices for marginalized populations.

I start a course on Politics and Policy by asking 100 or so students from several dozen countries to say what comes to mind when they hear the word “science.” Terms mentioned are objectivity, truth-seeking, hypothesis testing, experiments, data, logic, and the like. I write them on the blackboard. I then ask what comes to mind to mind when they hear the word “politics.” Here they mention power, manipulation, ambition, conflict, partisanship, spin, ideology, and, less often, vision and purpose. This list is put on the blackboard. Then, with two word lists before us, I comment that because they have just joined a school of public policy they must have a view of what goes into thinking up, arguing about, designing, and implementing policy. After a bit of discussion it gradually it sinks in. Policy is the meeting ground of science and politics. It is where the two word-lists on the blackboard come together and thrash it out, neither side ever quite vanishing the other.

Advancements in technology and noise control measures significantly reduced the noise emissions of refrigerators. Despite the achievement of low sound power levels in modern refrigerators, substantial efforts are still dedicated to further minimizing their noise. This initiated an examination into the need for ongoing activities to reduce noise, given the already minimal noise levels. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of refrigerator noise in everyday life, examining the circumstances and extent of individuals' exposure to noise while exploring their general perception. In an online survey, attention to refrigerator noise was explored to understand how often respondents can hear refrigerator noise in their daily lives. In addition, questions about the operating conditions of the refrigerator, in particular at the times when participants could hear refrigerator noise, were also assessed in the survey. Finally, the results of measurements that generalize the extent to which refrigerator noise can exceed background noise in normal rooms were also evaluated in this study.

The High Court has long struggled with the constitutional status of military tribunals established to hear disciplinary charges against service personnel. The Court's judgments reveal three distinct theories on this issue. The first view holds that military tribunals exercise judicial power, but not ‘the judicial power of the Commonwealth’ within the meaning of s 71 of the Constitution. The second view holds that the power in question is not judicial power at all for constitutional purposes. The third view holds that the power is ‘the judicial power of the Commonwealth’, but can be exercised by courts martial under a limited exception to the rules set out in Chapter III of the Constitution. The first view dominated the High Court's reasoning until Lane v Morrison (2009) 239 CLR 230, where the judges endorsed the second view. This article contends that the first and second views pose insuperable difficulties when placed in their broader constitutional context. The authors therefore argue for the third interpretation. They further argue that the constitutional basis for the third view strongly implies that military tribunals may only exercise jurisdiction over offences by military personnel that relate to service discipline.

In this study, the author finds the many conformities of the expression of Mushtafa Luthfi about the politician's ruthlessness in power, various ways will be taken by them to seize power. This study concludes that politicians are like sycophants in which they justify many ways to become rulers without thinking of the fate of their people.

Background: Voice hearing experiences, or auditory verbal hallucinations, occur in healthy individuals as well as in individuals who need clinical care, but news media depict voice hearing primarily as a symptom of mental illness, particularly schizophrenia. Aims: This article explores whether, and how, public perception of an exaggerated association between voice hearing and mental illness might influence individuals’ need for clinical care. Method: A narrative literature review was conducted, using relevant peer-reviewed research published in the English language. Results: Stigma may prevent disclosure of voice hearing experiences. Non-disclosure can prevent access to sources of normalizing information and lead to isolation, loss of social support and distress. Internalization of stigma and concomitantly decreased self-esteem could potentially affect features of voices such as perceived voice power, controllability, negativity and frequency, as well as distress. Increased distress may result in a decrease in functioning and increased need for clinical care. Conclusion: The literature reviewed suggests that stigma has the potential to increase need for care through many interrelated pathways. However, the ability to draw definitive conclusions was constrained by the designs of the studies reviewed. Further research is needed to confirm the findings of this review.

In our digital information age, news and ideas come at us constantly and from every direction—newspapers, cable television, podcasts, online media, and more. It can be difficult to keep up with the fleeting and ephemeral news of the day. Books, on the other hand, provide a source of enduring ideas. Books contain the researched hypotheses, the well-developed theories, and the fully formed arguments that outlast the news and analysis of the moment, preserved for the ages on the written page, to be discussed, admired, criticized, or supplanted by generations to come. And books about the law, like the ones reviewed in these pages, can spark ideas that lead lawyers and policymakers to consider new issues and think in new ways. Legal books are not merely academic musings, but vehicles of thought that can lead decisionmakers to develop programs and priorities that can shape public policy. When I served as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan during the Obama Administration, books frequently influenced the work of federal law enforcement, the Department of Justice, and its ninety-four U.S. Attorney’s Offices around the country. I would hear about these books at conferences or in conversations with others in law enforcement, and the books became must-reads. Some books were more scholarly than others, but they each had great influence on decisionmakers.

The article is devoted to the study of the “Shakespearean text” by Yuri Dombrovsky from the standpoint of Bakhtin dialogism. Clarifies the concept of “Shakespearean text” refers to and analyzes “Shakespearean text” by Dombrovsky, including artistic works – a trilogy of novels about Shakespeare (“Dark Lady” “Second-highest quality bed”, “Royal Rescript”) and two chapters of the novel “Dark Lady” (“Queen” and “Count Essex”), originally entered into its composition, but later was published separately, as well as two scientific and critical articles – “‘RetlandBaconSouthamptonShakespeare’: about the myth, anti-myth and biographical hypothesis” and “To Italians about Shakespeare”. The study author states that “Shakespearean text” by Yuri Dombrovsky dominated themes of tyranny and government that does not want to hear the people, of censorship, depriving the artist’s freedom of expression and the role of the artist in an unfree society. Special attention is paid to the problem of interaction between Shakespeare and monologue-authoritarian society in the artistic world created by the writer. The author hypothesizes that in the trilogy of short stories about Shakespeare, Dombrovsky addressed such problems of the totalitarian regime as censorship, cruelty and despotism of power from a relatively “safe” distance – the age of Shakespeare. The author notes the presence of a special situation of double dialogue in “Shakespearean text” by Yuri Dombrovsky: the dialogue is conducted through the Shakespearean era with the contemporary writer’s reality, power and culture. The article proves the similarity of Dombrovsky as a biographical author with the Shakespeare he portrayed, and notes the presence of common features in both writers (sacralization of creativity, impulsive character, addiction to alcohol, epileptic seizures, etc.). The conducted research allows us to conclude that Dombrovsky, attempting a dialogue with the monologue-authoritarian power, finds a voice through art, like “his” Shakespeare. Dombrovsky connects the ways of solving the problem of the artist and power with art as the only way to build a dialogue in the conditions of totalitarianism – not so much with the authorities, who are not able to hear it, as with themselves.

The following article aims to examine Mary Dorcey's poem "Come Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear," included in the 1991 volume Moving into the Space Cleared by Our Mothers. Apart from being a well-known and critically acclaimed Irish poet and fiction writer, the author of the poem has been, from its beginnings, actively involved in lesbian rights movement. Dorcey's poem "Come Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear" is to be construed from a perspective of lesbian and feminist discourse, as well as a cultural, sociological and political context in which it was created. While analyzing the poem, the emphasis is being paid to the intertwining of various ideological and subversive assumptions (dominant and the implied ones), their competing for importance and asserting authority over one another, in line with, and sometimes, against the grain of the textual framework. In other words, Dorcey's poem introduces a multilayered framework that draws heavily on various sources: the popular culture idiom, religious discourse (the references to the Virgin Mary and the biblical annunciation imagery), the text even employs, in some parts, crime and legal jargon, but, above all, it relies upon sensuous lesbian experience where desire and respect for the other woman opens the emancipating space allowing for redefining of one's personal and textual location. As a result of such a multifarious interaction, unrepresented and unacknowledged Irish women's standpoints may come to the surface and become articulated, disrupting their enforced muteness that the controlling heteronormative discourse has attempted to ensure. In Dorcey's poem, the operating metaphor of women's silence (or rather—silencing women), conceived of, at first, as the need to conceal one's sexual (lesbian) identity in fear of social ostracism and contempt of the "neighbours," is further equated with the noiseless, solitary and violent death of the anonymous woman, the finding of whose body was reported on the news. In both cases, the unwanted Irish women's voices of either agony, during the unregistered by anybody misogynist bloodshed that took place inside the flat, or the forbidden sounds of lesbian sexual excitement, need to be (self) censored and stifled, not to disrupt an idealized image of the well-established family and heteronormative patterns. In the light of the aforementioned parallel, empowered by the shared bodily and emotional closeness with her female lover, and already bitterly aware that silence in discourse is synonymous with textual, or even, actual death, the speaker in "Come Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear" comes to claim her own agency and makes her voice heard by others and taken into account.

Nathalie Sarraute created a new style of writing, renouncing the accepted literary forms by discarding conventional ideas about plot, chronology, and characterization. Research in this area has consistently shown that, in Sarraute, language is at the heart of her drama. However, this essay emphasizes that she played with the power of words and silences to make us hear far beyond the social surface of discourse and grasp what is really going on in the minds of the interlocutors. Against the structural linguistics of her time, Sarraute concentrated on every phoneme, every syllable of a word or an expression, testing and retesting it from all angles until those extremely rapid “invisible reactions” that we sense inside us--those inner movements called “tropisms” by Sarraute--become perceptible. Briefly, the prelinguistic impulses, which are the basic emotions underlying everyday human interrelationships, become the key concept of all her short, intense plays under the form of “logodrama.”

ABSTRACT By mixing fayerye with realism in the Merchant’s Tale, Chaucer invites us to explore how we respond to fiction, mythical languages, and imagination. Do we anxiously brush off what happens in an enchanted garden? Do we refuse to be credulous? The magical setting of the action forces us out of a realist prism into a reflection on interpretive spontaneity, and it delivers a deeper message about suspending disbelief. Chaucer shows us that faith in the power of poesis provides a means to grapple with the unspeakable and to heal wounds of love, death, and sexuality. Just as children watching puppet shows respond differently at different points in their cognitive development, so an old man must question what he sees in order to believe and disbelieve in new ways. Chaucer’s retelling of a staple medieval fabliau anatomizes fantasy in order to give us vital new ears to hear and eyes to see.

Abstract In this paper, we analyse sound waves arising from a cosmic phase transition where the full velocity profile is taken into account as an explanation for the gravitational wave spectrum observed by multiple pulsar timing array groups. Unlike the broken power law used in the literature, in this scenario the power law after the peak depends on the macroscopic properties of the phase transition, allowing for a better fit with pulsar timing array (PTA) data. We compare the best fit with that obtained using the usual broken power law and, unsurprisingly, find a better fit with the gravitational wave (GW) spectrum that utilizes the full velocity profile. Even more importantly, the thermal parameters that produce the best fit are quite different. We then discuss models that can produce the best-fit point and complementary probes using CMB experiments and searches for light particles in DUNE, IceCUBE-Gen2, neutrinoless double β-decay, and forward physics facilities (FPF) at the LHC like FASERν, etc.

Due to the prevalence of the turbo charged engines the customer’s attitude to the emitted noises has been changed. The customer wishes a high power output, but no longer wants to hear it. Thus the consideration of the noise characteristics during the development work is recently as important as the thermodynamic or durability issues. This paper deals with different turbocharger noises, describes its sources, transmission routes and possibilities of noise reduction.

This study aims to investigate the perception of games in students who study in the elementary school period through the pictures they draw in the context of social powers. In this study, the phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The study group of the research consisted of a total of 1,818 students, who studied in 23 elementary schools in the Marmara, Black Sea, Central Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia regions. Within this scope, after providing the students with the required materials, the question, ‘What do you think about when you hear “games”?’, was asked and they were asked to draw a picture with the theme, games. The data obtained in this framework were analysed through content analysis. According to the obtained findings, it is suggested that the playgrounds enjoyed by the children should be regulated to develop their social skills.

On 28 January 2017, the field of Middle East studies lost one of its strongest and most vocal advocates—Barbara Harlow. Barbara led a heroic life: writing, resisting, drinking, and smoking, to the end! With the heart of a warrior, she practiced muqāwama at every level and in every possible way. Her power of the “No” confronted structures of power, normativity of all kind, and fluff. She was solid, engaged, wise, and infinitely supportive of her students, colleagues, and causes. She was the first to arrive at every demonstration and the last to leave, making sure that the pro-bono lawyers were ready at police stations to work on releasing those arrested. Barbara was real, genuine, and fun to be around. She loved to hear the latest news—and gossip—from Cairo and Beirut as we sat at her kitchen table, sipping white wine and smoking. She read everything, from mystery novels set in Cairo or London to the most recent study on Arabic literature and culture. Browsing her library one finds graphic novels from the Ghassan Kanafani Foundation that she used to learn Arabic; all of Lacan, Blanchot, Artaud, and Derrida from her poststructuralist days; legal and political theory books dealing with South Africa and Palestine; and complete series of journals such as al-Hadaf and al-Karmel.

BACKGROUND: WHO drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) treatment recommendations now emphasize all-oral regimens, recommending against certain injectable agents and deprioritizing others due to inferior safety and efficacy. Despite increasing focus on patient-centered care, we are not aware of systematic attempts to qualitatively document patients’ perspectives on injectable agents. This may inform implementation of WHO guidelines, emphasizing the importance of consultation with affected communities.METHODS: Testimonies were provided by TB survivors who experienced hearing loss from treatment with injectable agents. Testimonies were submitted in writing in response to minimal, standardized, open-ended prompts. Participants provided a signed consent form (with options to participate anonymously or as a named co-author), and later gave input into the overall shape and recommendations of the article.RESULTS: Fourteen TB survivors in 12 countries contributed testimonies. The following common themes emerged: lack of access to appropriate testing, information, treatment, or a collaborative treatment environment; the power of supportive care and social environments; stigma and isolation from TB treatment itself and resultant disability; and inaccessibility of cochlear implants.CONCLUSIONS: Survivor testimonies indicate strong preferences for avoidance of injectable agents, supporting rapid implementation of revised WHO guidelines, as well as for quality and supportive care for both TB and disabilities.

We all face traffic daily and have experienced the frustration and stress that traffic induces. Our project focuses on reducing the traffic waiting time significantly and hence reducing air and noise pollution. Less waiting time at traffic means less wastage of fuel leading to energy conservation in the times of a global warming

Introduction: Smoking is a common tendency among all social classes around the globe, especially in the working population. Objective: To assess the significant link between tobacco and cigarette smoking and its effect on hearing among smokers as there is limited study on this aspect of the Indian population particularly with a high-frequency hearing threshold. Methodology: Cross-sectional study carried out on patients attending the OPD in ENT and Head & Neck Surgery Department of Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital. The sample size came to be 90. Results: In smokers, there were 72 (80%) males and 18 (20%) females while in the non-smoker group, there were 53 (58.8%) males and 37 (41.11%) females, and 39 (43.3%) subjects belonging to the rural population while 51 (56.7%) subjects belong to an urban population. out of 90 subjects, 43 (30.3%) had cochlear deafness followed by 40 (28.2%) who had normal hearing and 7 (4.9%) had retrocochlear deafness. Conclusion: Tobacco has the power to reduce the ability to hear, mainly causing a sensorineural hearing loss at higher frequencies.
