This chapter examines the workings of extended, Web-oriented communications commodity chains. It begins with a discussion of networks and access devices—an expansive, malleable infrastructure comprised of service, software, and applications powered by other intermediaries, vendors of everything from operating systems, browsers, search engines, and social networks to program content. It then considers how recomposition continued at a frenzied pace across this great range throughout the digital depression, signifying capital's scramble to open and to occupy high-profit boxes. It also explores the ways in which network infrastructures impacted a century-old manufacturing base and describes the apparently neutral technical feature of the emerging system's network engineering that attested to the changes that characterized the transition to the Internet. The chapter concludes with an assessment of the erosion of social responsibility around networks and how telecommunications liberalization induced a growing potential for market turmoil.

This article examines the intriguing physical properties of nanowires, with particular emphasis on self-organizing atom chains. It begins with an overview of the one-dimensional free electron model and some interesting phenomena of one-dimensional electron systems. It derives an expression for the 1D density of states, which exhibits a singularity at the bottom of the band and extends the free-electron model, taking into consideration a weak periodic potential that is induced by the lattice. It also describes the electrostatic interactions between the electrons and goes on to discuss two interesting features of 1D systems: the quantization of conductance and Peierls instability. Finally, the article presents the experimental results of a nearly ideal one-dimensional system, namely self-organizing platinum atom chains on a Ge(001) surface, focusing on their formation, quantum confinement between the Pt chains and the occurrence of a Peierls transition within the chains.

Local content policies for extractive industries have attracted increased interest. Local content requirements are often included in legislation or contracts. Such efforts may be constrained by low capacity of potential suppliers, low skills, and the general business environment. A number of extractive industry companies have introduced supplier development programmes that attempt to reduce the constraints and skill gaps. Government industrial policies on local content vary: some prescribe quantitative targets for local content, while others focus on improving skills and raising the capacity of domestic industry. Infrastructure built for extractive industries can often be used by other economic activities. Difficulties in finding suitable financing arrangements have, however, limited the number of successful multi-user extractive industry-related infrastructure projects.

Historically, a key focus of human resource (HR) professionals was developing, implementing, and standardizing HR polices and processes to ensure employees perform in standardized ways. However, the utility of a standardized approach to HR practices has been increasingly questioned over recent decades. In this vein, formalized workforce-differentiation approaches to the segmentation of the workforce based on employees’ competence or the nature of roles performed to reflect differential potential to generate value has emerged as a central element of talent-management strategies. While earlier research on workforce differentiation identified individual talent as the locus of differentiation, more recently, the focus has shifted to strategic or pivotal jobs. This chapter reviews the emergence of workforce differentiation in the academic literature and charts key trends in this regard. The implications of a workforce-differentiation strategy for employees are also considered. The chapter concludes with a consideration of emerging trends and potential avenues for future study.

From Locke to Eliza Haywood, Henry Fielding, and Frances Burney, and from Dudley North to Hume and Adam Smith, the book's exploration of the insensible dramatically expands the scope of affect in the period's writing and thought. The chapter charts a narrative about invasion and survival after the thirteenth-century depredations of the Mongols, and discusses how scribal techniques adjusted versions of texts to suit the ideology of dynastic claimants. Prose narratives and two epics tell a story of the trauma of conquest and the potential for renewal. Historical discourses employed a language of natural boundaries, relying on river, plain, and forest imagery to create a symbolic geography of the Russian state.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of almost all economies, employing the great majority of the workforce, and making the biggest contribution to GDP. To some extent, they are also active as outward foreign investors or are linked to inward foreign investment through supply chains. This chapter analyses the role of international investment law for the internationalization strategies of SMEs. It explores to what extent international investment agreements specifically promote, facilitate, and protect investments involving SMEs, referring to concrete treaty examples. It also examines the risk of potential negative effects of certain IIA provisions on domestic SMEs. On the basis of this analysis, the chapter makes a number of suggestions regarding how international investment law could further improve the situation of SMEs.

This chapter sets out an alternate history of religious difference, one that explores not only its capacity for provoking conflict but also its potential as a source of stability and cooperation in a pre‐secular age. The Tunis Crusade consolidated existing religious allegiances among Muslims and Christians, but with surprising results. Rather than causing chaos and division, the expedition’s powerful affirmations of difference animated a complex network of Mediterranean political, economic, and religious interactions that thrived into the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.

The chapter concludes that since we cannot believe the error theory, there is no reason for us to believe this theory.

Some Africans were aware of Buddhism at a very early stage in history—indeed, some of the earliest evidence for Western knowledge of Buddhist traditions comes from Northeast Africa—yet today Africa is the least Buddhist of the inhabited continents. This chapter charts the complex history of Buddhist traditions in Africa and sketches the current distribution of these traditions on the continent. Inevitably, legacies of colonial occupation have affected the distribution of Buddhist traditions in Africa. In South Africa there is an overwhelmingly white (Caucasian) convert community that barely interacts with small ethnic Buddhist traditions. Only in recent years has a new approach to Buddhist traditions arisen, a service-oriented approach that sees Africa not as a potential source of converts, but as a field for the practical application of compassion.

Set against the backdrop of “the new Ireland” of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, it charts Ireland’s growing multiculturalism, changing patterns of migration, the diminishing influence of Catholicism, and synergies between local and global forms of cultural expression in its investigation of rights and rites of belonging. It introduces the structure of the book, with each chapter exploring a range of religious, educational, civic, and community-based rituals, as well as theoretical engagement with one of five core characteristic of singing: resonance, somatics, performance, temporality, and tacitness. This weave of somatically and ethnographically grounded experience with theoretical discourse proposes ritually framed singing as a key site for the negotiation and performance of belonging.

The chapter argues that, more than playing catch up with and being determined by technoscientific innovation, law also plays a leading role in the regulation of new technologies by shaping and directing the conditions of possibility for their development and market availability. The chapter charts some of the main ways in which EU internal market law retains its regulatory capacity and efficacy through techniques of negative and positive integration. These techniques centralize the harms or hazards relating to product safety as ‘the’ risks posed by new technologies. Designing regulation and limiting ‘risk’ (through it) marginalizes and obscures other kinds of harms or hazards to which it might pertain. The current regulatory design also depoliticizes, naturalizes, and quells contestation around the approach taken and obscures other potential framings of regulation, such as by human rights and bioethics.

Charles Sanders Peirce, the father of pragmatism and of semiotics, proposed a theory of sign that plays a key role in pragmatist philosophy and serves as a foundation for the theory of thought and action. According to Peirce, meaning is non-existent if there is no sign pointing to another sign (mediation). In other words, there is no meaning which does not generate signs from signs, in long teleological chains distributed over time in a certain direction (semiosis). Peirce insists that ‘the woof and warp of all thought is symbols’, that ‘every thought and action is a sign’. This chapter first looks at the biography of Peirce and his intellectual influence before outlining the key concepts of his semiotics—mediation and semiosis—as well as their process orientation. It concludes by discussing the potential role of these concepts in process-oriented organization studies.

The new global competition policy should focus on facilitation of openness among global networks and value chains through the reduction of the manipulative and exclusionary potential of networks. BRICS cooperation can help make the global marketplace fairer and more equal, and can promote competition encouraging a broader dissemination of knowledge and advanced technologies, while eliminating barriers imposed on the global flows of innovation by the global technological monopolies and cartel-like technological joint ventures.

This chapter charts changing character of the economic ideas informing fiscal policymaking in Britain, and Fund responses to them. Drawing on interviews with the Fund’s UK Missions and UK authorities, it shows how, despite the IMF’s prizing of its non-political, scientific image, its differing views of UK policy space and prioritization became the stuff of a contested politics. The central assumption of the coalition government’s construction of fiscal rectitude was that Britain faced a ‘crisis of debt’, yet the IMF did not share this view. Fund work on fiscal multipliers being higher during recessions, and the adverse effects of fiscal consolidation on growth, all had pointed relevance for UK policy. The coalition government saw little potential for activist fiscal policy in support of growth. In 2013 Blanchard accused the UK authorities of ‘playing with fire’ by pursuing excessively harsh austerity which threatened a prolonged and deep recession.

This book charts the historical emergence of this distinctive tradition of war and explains the factors driving its contemporary prominence. It argues that vicarious warfare is an extreme form of strategic alchemy, and contemporary America is its most enthusiastic guild. In simple terms, vicarious warfare refers to the prospect of war on the cheap, fought at a reduced price in blood, treasure or political capital relative to ambition. The book contrasts the tactical advantages of vicarious warfare with its hidden costs and potential to cause significant strategic harm.

The first half of the twentieth century witnessed the dramatic emergence of modern welfare states across Europe. Why did this transformation take form? Was this process uniform across Europe? And what did it mean for relations between individuals and states? This chapter suggests that European social policies in the early twentieth century were characterized by an emphasis on integration and community. This perspective chimed with widespread utopian aspirations for social improvement voiced across the political spectrum and across the Continent. Nonetheless, the relative emphasis on integration and community varied across Europe and over time. Moreover, associated quests for an ideal future held the potential to be both enabling and oppressive. This chapter highlights two related themes that reveal these complexities: work and population politics. It charts developments in social legislation across Europe, including eugenics, labour, and family policies, and it traces the impact of transnational reform movements and international organizations.
