AbstractMeltwater habitats in the Darwin Glacier region, Victoria Land (80°S), were sampled in December 2007 and January 2009 to characterize their microbial and metazoan ecology, nutrient status and geochemistry. Targeted areas included terrestrial ponds of the Grant Valley, Lake Wellman, Tentacle Ridge and Diamond Hill, and supraglacial ponds and cryoconite holes of the lower Darwin Glacier. Geochemistry ranged from Na-Cl dominated terrestrial ponds to Na-HCO3dominated, dilute supraglacial ponds and cryoconites. All showed the nitrate enrichment typical of inland ponds of Victoria Land (up to 13 g.l-1NO3-N), with some precipitating nitratine (NaNO3) salt. Elevated pH indicated ongoing photosynthetic processes. Benthic microbial mats were thin and poorly developed, dominated by oscillatoriacean cyanobacteria. Nitrogen-fixing genera were generally absent and diatoms were rare. A large (20 μm long)Cyanothecespecies was the most abundant cyanobacterium in the water and in sediments of the cryoconites. DNA finger-printing identified distinct differences in cyanobacterial and bacterial community structure between the cryoconites, terrestrial ponds and ponds on glacial margins. Eleven metazoan species were identified, with rotifers being the most abundant. Pond substrate (terrestrial rock, ice-cored moraine or supraglacial ice) proved to be a more significant influence on biogeochemistry than other aspects of geography or climatic conditions.

AbstractMeltwater ponds are important biodiversity elements in continental Antarctica. Many occupy closed basins and are vulnerable to changes in the balance between water accrual, through melting of ice and snow, and water loss by ablation and evaporation. We use a two-decade long record of ponds on the McMurdo Ice Shelf to assess temporal variability in key limnological variables. Ponds underwent many-fold change in biologically conservative variables, such as conductivity, and changes were similar in ponds from different catchments but of comparable area. In contrast, biologically active variables (pH, inorganic nutrients and planktonic/benthic biomass) are buffered by in-pond processes and show consistency between years and no coherence across catchments. Coherent behaviour across catchments implies an overarching, climatic effect. However, we could identify no signature of summer air temperature or irradiance in pond dynamics, although winter snow deposition may leave a legacy of low conductivity to the following summer. While ponds are clearly affected by climate, our data show that ecosystem responses are complex and highlight the need for system-appropriate, long-term observation if directional environmental change is to be separated from inherent variability in systems that respond to multiple climatic variables and which have significant biological buffering capacity.

Lithium distributions in lake and pond waters of the McMurdo Dry Valleys of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica were studied to elucidate the origin of dissolved salts and the evolutionary history of the lakes and ponds. The EfLi [(Li/Cl)sample/(Li/Cl)seawater] values of the bottom waters in Lakes Bonney and Fryxell were higher than unity (EfLi=4–7), indicating that the salts originated from sea salts (probably relict seawater) and have been subsequently modified by the contribution of meltwaters containing atmospheric fallout and/or rock and soil weathering products. In contrast, extremely high Li concentrations with high EfLi values in the Don Juan Pond water (EfLi = 180) and the bottom waters of Lake Vanda (EfLi = 40) suggest that the salts originated from deep groundwaters influenced mainly by saline water-rock interactions, as supported by the dissolution experiments of granite in NaCl solution. The low Li concentrations of pond waters with high EfLi values in the Labyrinth indicate that the salts are derived from atmospheric fallout. The decrease of the EfLi values with the increase of Cl concentrations can be explained by the repeated cycles of the migration of Li into the ice phase and subsequent ablation of surface ice, as indicated by seawater freezing experiments.

The extensive ablation zone on the McMurdo Ice Shelf (78°S, 165°30′E) contains numerous ponds that are lined with benthic mats of cyanobacteria and associated micro-organisms. The photoautotrophic biomass content of these mats was examined in six contrasting ponds. Particulate carbon contributed only 3.2% of the mat dry weight, with C:N ratios generally less than 20:1. The chlorophyll a content was low relative to carbon (chlorophylla : C<0.01). Analysis of the mats by high performance liquid chromatography [HPLC] showed that the pigment fraction assayed spectrophotometrically as chlorophyll a contained large quantities (up to 70%) of the degradation product chlorophyllide a and the epimer chlorophyll a'. Photosynthetic rates per unit chlorophyll a[HPLC] were extremely slow: <0.1 mg C (mg Chla)−1, less than one tenth the rates recorded in the overlying phytoplankton community. These analyses indicate that in the ice pond benthic mats most of the dry weight is inorganic, most of the organic carbon is non-chlorophyll-containing material, and much of the chlorophyll a is not photosynthetically active. Cold temperatures and the associated low activity of herbivores and detritivores may contribute towards this preservation of inactive chlorophyll a on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, and perhaps in similar benthic mats in the lakes and streams of southern Victoria Land.

Five taxa in the genus Neidium, N. iridis, N. beatyi sp. nov., N. vandusenense sp. nov., N. collare sp. nov. and N. lavoieanum sp. nov. are documented from a pond and stream system in the VanDusen Botanical Garden, Vancouver, Canada. Neidium beatyi is a large linear species with multiple longitudinal canals and sagittate apices. The areolae are occluded by finger-like silica extensions on the external surface. This taxon is distinguished from Neidium iridis by the number of longitudinal canals (>5), shape of the valve apices, and smaller size. Neidium vandusenense is broadly linear with distinct rostrate apices. Two-three longitudinal canals are present along each margin. Plastid rbcL sequence data associates this taxon with N. amphigomphus. Neidium collare is an elliptic lanceolate taxon with one longitudinal canal. This taxon is genetically related to N. bisculatum sensu lato, but with a different shape form. Neidium lavoieanum has a valve shape form similar to Neidium potapovae, but is larger and genetically similar to N. productum sensu lato. The five Neidium taxa were observed in a small stream next to Lake Victoria (pond) in the VanDusen Botanical Garden Vancouver, Canada. The water was mildly alkaline with a pH of 7.86, a conductance of 163 µS/cm, higher nutrient loads and low metal content.

Aquatic ecosystems around the world have been massively altered through vegetation clearance and changed flow regimes accompanying agricultural development. Impacts may include disrupted dispersal for aquatic species. We investigated this in lentic (standing) waterbodies in agricultural and predominantly forested landscapes of the box-ironbark region of central Victoria, Australia. We hypothesised that higher representation in forested than agricultural landscapes (i.e. ‘forest-bias’) for a species may reflect an ability to disperse more easily through the former, resulting in lower genetic structure in forested than in agricultural landscapes. Conversely, ‘cosmopolitan’ species would show no difference in genetic structure between landscape types. Molecular genetic analyses of a forest-biased diving beetle, Necterosoma wollastoni, and a cosmopolitan waterboatman, Micronecta gracilis, revealed the following, for both species: (1) no evidence for long-term barriers to gene flow in the region, (2) lack of contemporary genetic differentiation over 30 000 km2 and (3) random distribution of related genotypes in space, implying that neither forest nor farmland inhibits their dispersal in a concerted fashion. Taken together, these results indicate very high gene flow and dispersal in the past and present for both these species. Massive landscape change may have little impact on movement patterns of lentic invertebrates that have evolved high dispersal capabilities.

The Australian species of the water beetle genus Hydraena Kugelann, 1794, are revised, based on the study of 7,654 specimens. The 29 previously named species are redescribed, and 56 new species are described. The species are placed in 24 species groups. High resolution digital images of all primary types are presented (online version in color), and geographic distributions are mapped. Male genitalia, representative female terminal abdominal segments and representative spermathecae are illustrated. Australian Hydraena are typically found in sandy/gravelly stream margins, often in association with streamside litter; some species are primarily pond dwelling, a few species are humicolous, and one species may be subterranean. The areas of endemicity and species richness coincide quite closely with the Bassian, Torresian, and Timorian biogeographic subregions. Eleven species are shared between the Bassian and Torresian subregions, and twelve are shared between the Torresian and Timorian subregions. Only one species, H. impercepta Zwick, is known to be found in both Australia and Papua New Guinea. One Australian species, H. ambiflagellata, is also known from New Zealand. Fish introductions in Africa have been made at various spatial scales from small fish ponds to the largest lakes, primarily to sustain or increase production, though some were to develop sport fisheries and to control unwanted organisms. Some introductions have fulfilled their objective in the short term, but several "successful" introductions have created uncertainties about their long-term sustainability. Lates niloticus, Oreochromis niloticus, O. leucostictus, Tilapia melanopleura and T. zilli were introduced into Lakes Victoria and Kyoga in 1950's and early 1960's; by the 1980's L. niloticus and O. niloticus dominated the fisheries, having virtually eliminated a number of endemic species. In Lake Victoria, the loss of genetic diversity has been accompanied by a loss of trophic diversity; the transformation of the fish community coincided with profound eutrophication (algal blooms, fish kills, hypolimnetic anoxia) which might be related to alterations of the lake's food-web structure. By contrast, the introduction of a planktivore, Limnothrissa miodon into Lake Kivu and the Kariba reservoir has established highly successful fisheries with little effect on the pre-existing fish community or trophic ecology. The endemic species-rich African Great Lakes may be particularly sensitive to introductions. Species extinctions, introgressive hybridization and ecosystem alterations may occur following introductions.

The New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) is found in disjunct populations in coastal south- eastern Australia. This study assessed the diet of the species at four locations (Anglesea, Loch Sport, Providence Ponds and Wilsons Promontory) in Victoria, southern Australia, where it is very rare in abundance and distribution. Overall, P. novaehollandiae was found to consume considerable amounts of dicotyledon leaf (27%), fungi (19%), invertebrate (17%) and seed (14%). There was no significant difference in diet between males and females. Seasonal variations in the percentage of dicotyledon leaf and fungi consumed were recorded. There were also significant differences between localities in the consumption of fungi, root and invertebrate material. Dicotyledon leaf was the most commonly consumed food item at Anglesea, Providence Ponds and Wilsons Promontory, while fungi was the most important at Loch Sport. The dietary differences between localities are likely to be related to important habitat factors including vegetation floristics and successional age. The results indicate that P. novaehollandiae is an omnivore with an opportunistic foraging strategy.

Preferences of Chelodina expansa, Chelodina longicollis and Emydura macquarii (Testudines : Chelidae) for different types of aquatic habitat on the Murray River flood plain in south-eastern Australia were inferred from catch statistics. E. macquarii was the species most often caught in the river itself and river backwaters, whereas C. longicollis formed the majority of captures from oxbow lakes, anabranches, ponds, rain pools and a swamp. Relative abundance of E. macquarii was significantly positively correlated with water body depth, transparency, persistence during dry conditions and flow speed, and negatively correlated with remoteness from the river. C. longicollis demonstrated the opposite pattern, and the proportional catch of C. expansa was weakly correlated with environmental variables. The capacity of C. longicollis for colonising and surviving in small, remote and ephemeral ponds and pools relates to its ability to aestivate and resist desiccation and its propensity for overland migration.

Microscopy, DNA sequencing, and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) were used to examine variation within Nostoc commune from collections between 72 and 78°S in Victoria Land, Antarctica. Although there is considerable bias of collected material towards southern latitudes, and this material varies greatly in age (collected between 1984 and 2004), an important new phylogeographic pattern was found. DNA sequencing of the tRNAleu(UAA) region, used recently to define form species N. commune, revealed little variation between collections. AFLP analysis, however, split the collected material according to habitat (irrigated soil communities versus ponds), rather than latitude. These results suggest that environmental factors linked to latitude are not the greatest drivers of genetic variation in Victoria Land. These may operate at a lower level but would require intensive sampling within narrowly defined habitat types at a range of latitudes to uncover. We advocate extensive sampling across local environmental gradients based on water availability, comparative culturing, and development of sequence characterised amplified regions (SCARs) across a range of latitudes in future seasons of the Latitudinal Gradient Project.

Pseudomys novaehollandiae is ‘Endangered’ in Victoria, where it is presently considered to be extant at only three localities Loch Sport, Providence Ponds, and Wilsons Promontory. This study aimed to determine indicators of suitable habitat for the species that could assist in identifying potential habitat and sites for planned re-introductions as part of a recovery program. Vegetation and site data (soils, topography, rainfall, fire age-time since fire) were assessed at localities where P. novaehollandiae was recorded. The species occurred in five structural vegetation groups - open-forest, woodland, heathland, shrubland, grassland, with the most common being open-forest and woodland. Grassland and shrubland were restricted to coastal sand-dunes in south Gippsland. Understorey vegetation at most sites was dominated by sclerophyllous shrubs ranging in cover from 10 - 70%. Classification of quadrats produced eight floristic groups in which the trend was for quadrats to cluster according to geographical location. Ordination confirmed the classification pattern and vector-fitting produced significant correlations between vector points and five variables: species richness, latitude, longitude, fire age and annual rainfall. The study identified a range of vegetation communities where P. novaehollandiae occurs and provided evidence that the species is not restricted to floristically rich and diverse heathlands. The findings can be used to determine further localities with suitable habitat. However, factors other than vegetation are also likely to be important in predicting suitable habitat.

The gonadal development of Murray cod, Maccullochella peelii peelii, in Lake Charlegrark, Victoria, and adjacent farm ponds was evaluated. Gonadosomatic index, macroscopic classification and histological analysis were used to determine the age at first maturity and the gonadal development in this introduced population. There is a marked difference between the sexes in the size at first maturity, with females maturing at approximately 6 years of age and 2000 g in weight and males maturing at 3-4 years and 700 g. Gonadosomatic index data indicate that spawning occurs around November. Ovarian development in this species follows a pattern similar to that in a number of other teleosts. Testes have a lobular structure. Macroscopic evaluation of ovaries provided a good indication of the stage of the development of the gonad. However, the presence of spermatozoa throughout the year in the gonads of mature male fish makes the macroscopic evaluation of testicular development less reliable. Three cod, approximately 1% of the population, contained gonads with both ovarian and testicular tissue.

The New Holland Mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) is an endangered species in Victoria. The aims of this study were to determine the present distribution of the species and to identify processes and habitat modification that threaten the species future status. Survey trapping was carried out in areas where P. novaehollandiae had been recorded previously. The species is in a demonstrable state of decline, and there is evidence that it has been lost from at least three and possibly six localities in the past 10-16 years. The species decline appears to have resulted from a combination of systematic factors, the most important of which is habitat loss due to clearing of native vegetation, and the subsequent fragmentation of populations. Altered fire regimes and the consequent changes to the productivity of vegetation and the diet of the species are also likely to be important factors. The areas where P. novaehollandiae remains extant Anglesea, Loch Sport, Providence Ponds, Wilson's Promontory and possibly Mullungdung now assume much greater importance. Critical habitat should be identified and managed. While research questions concerning the population dynamics of the species and threats to its survival remain unanswered, management actions are required immediately. These include monitoring known populations, ensuring protection of habitats, identifying potential habitat and determining suitable management regimes.

The age and growth of Murray cod, Maccullochella peelii, in Lake Charlegrark, western Victoria, were determined by using otoliths from fish sampled by beach-seine and gill-net, or caught by anglers, between August 1978 and August 1982. Annulus formation was validated up to 11 + years by several methods. Otoliths were examined from hatchery-bred fish of known age (up to 4+ years) that had been stocked into local farm ponds. Analysis of incremental growth for all fish sampled from the lake indicated that the mean edge-growth ratio was lowest, and the percentage of otoliths with an annulus at the edge was highest, in October. A nominal birth date of 1 October was designated for the population to enable calculation of the absolute age for each fish. Age-composition data for those fish taken by gill-net and by anglers (up to 21 + years) revealed modal progression of strong year classes (1970 to 1973 inclusive) during the sampling period. Length-frequency data for those fish taken by beach-seine (up to 3 + years) revealed modal progression, on a seasonal basis, of two relatively strong year classes (1978 and 1979) during the sampling period. A von Bertalanffy growth curve was fitted to length and age data for all fish collected in the lake (no sex difference, P>O.05), and growth parameters were estimated for the population (L∞ = 695 mm). This curve did not adequately describe the growth of fish older than 11 + years because the majority of sampled fish (98.3%) were aged 11 + years or younger. The length-weight relationship for the population was determined by using data from all fish collected in the lake (no sex difference, P>0.05).

ABSTRACT The microcystin (MC) content and cyanobacterial community structure of Antarctic microbial mat samples collected from 40 ponds, lakes, and hydroterrestrial environments were investigated. Samples were collected from Bratina Island and four of the Dry Valleys, Wright, Victoria, Miers, and Marshall. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and protein phosphatase 2A (PP-2A) inhibition assays resulted in the identification of low levels (1 to 16 mg/kg [dry weight]) of MCs in all samples. A plot of indicative potencies of MCs (PP-2A inhibition assay/ELISA ratio) versus total MCs (ELISA) showed a general decrease in potency, as total MC levels increased, and a clustering of values from discrete geographic locations. LC-tandem MS analysis on selected samples identified eight novel MC congeners. The low-energy collisional activation spectra were consistent with variants of [d-Asp3] MC-RR and [d-Asp3] MC-LR containing glycine [Gly1] rather than alanine and combinations of homoarginine [hAr2] or acetyldemethyl 3-amino-9-methoxy-2,6,8-trimethyl-10-phenyl-4,6-decadienoic acid (acetyldemethyl ADDA) [ADMAdda5] substitutions. Nostoc sp. was identified as a MC producer using PCR amplification of a region of the 16S rRNA gene and the aminotransferase domain of the mcyE gene. Automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) was undertaken to enable a comparison of cyanobacterial mat community structure from distant geographical locations. Two-dimensional multidimensional scaling ordination analysis of the ARISA data showed that in general, samples from the same geographic location tended to cluster together. ARISA also enabled the putative identification of the MC-producing Nostoc sp. from multiple samples.

But fish cognitive ecology did not begin in rivers and streams. Rather, one of the starting points for work on fish cognitive ecology was work done on the use of visual cues by homing pigeons. Prior to working with fish, Victoria Braithwaite helped to establish that homing pigeons rely not just on magnetic and olfactory cues but also on visual cues for successful return to their home loft. Simple, elegant experiments on homing established Victoria's ability to develop experimental manipulations to examine the role of visual cues in navigation by fish in familiar areas. This work formed the basis of a rich seam of work whereby a fish's ecology was used to propose hypotheses and predictions as to preferred cue use, and then cognitive abilities in a variety of fish species, from model systems (Atlantic salmon and sticklebacks) to the Panamanian Brachyraphis episcopi. Cognitive ecology in fish led to substantial work on fish pain and welfare, but was never left behind, with some of Victoria's last work addressed to determining the neural instantiation of cognitive variation.

Across much of the Arctic, lakes and ponds dominate the landscape. Starting in late September, the lakes are covered in ice, with ice persisting well into June or early July. In summer, the lakes are highly productive, supporting waterfowl and fish populations. However, little is known about the diversity and ecology of microscopic life in the lakes that influence biogeochemical cycles and contribute to ecosystem services. Even less is known about the prevalence of species that are characteristic of the seasons or whether some species persist year-round under both ice cover and summer open-water conditions. To begin to address these knowledge gaps, we sampled 10 morphometrically diverse lakes in the region of Ekaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay), on southern Victoria Island (NU, Canada). We focused on Greiner Lake, the lakes connected to it, isolated ponds, and two nearby larger lakes outside the Greiner watershed. The largest lakes sampled were Tahiryuaq (Ferguson Lake) and the nearby Spawning Lake, which support commercial sea-run Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) fisheries. Samples for nucleic acids were collected from the lakes along with limnological metadata. Microbial eukaryotes were identified with high-throughput amplicon sequencing targeting the V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene. Ciliates, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, and cryptophytes dominated the lake assemblages. A Bray–Curtis dissimilarity matrix separated communities into under-ice and open-water clusters, with additional separation by superficial lake area. In all, 133 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) occurred either in all under-ice or all open-water samples and were considered “core” microbial species or ecotypes. These were further characterized as seasonal indicators. Ten of the OTUs were characteristic of all lakes and all seasons sampled. Eight of these were cryptophytes, suggesting diverse functional capacity within the lineage. The core open-water indicators were mostly chrysophytes, with a few ciliates and uncharacterized Cercozoa, suggesting that summer communities are mixotrophic with contributions by heterotrophic taxa. The core under-ice indicators included a dozen ciliates along with chrysophytes, cryptomonads, and dinoflagellates, indicating a more heterotrophic community augmented by mixotrophic taxa in winter.
