Повний текст джерелаLaying hens are likely to be exposed to a wide range of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) potentially present in their environment. In the context of securing poultry farming systems regarding POPs, our research has focused on identifying and grading factors likely to influence the transfer of ingested POPs to eggs. These factors are related to the nature of the ingested matrix (soil or feed), to the characteristics of the animal (laying rate, fatness) and to the properties of the molecule (lipophilicity, sensitivity to metabolism). Different scientific approaches have been implemented: in vivo experimentation and mathematical modeling. In the frame of in vivo experiments we have assessed the relative bioavailability of PCBs from one naturally contaminated soil. In addition, we have calculated parameters of the kinetics of transfer to eggs of molecules that had never been studied in laying hens, such as emerging molecules (for example a brominated flame retardant, HBCD), or PAHs. Our results point out the dominant impact of the molecule metabolism on the shape of its kinetics and on its rate of transfer to eggs. The developed dynamic mathematical model makes it possible to pilot variations with time of the size of the lipid compartments in the animal and of the frequency of laying. It was used to assess the influence of these animal characteristics on the transfer of POPs to eggs. Laying rate proportionally influences the contamination level of eggs and of animal tissues at steady state. Body fat dilutes absorbed POPs in absence of laying and significantly influences the rate of decontamination of tissues during depuration subsequent to an exposure period

Повний текст джерелаThe industrial revolution, technological change, population growth and urbanization have affected not only the economy and politics all around the world but also the environment. Various types of pollutants are generated and introduced permanently into the environment through industrial, agricultural and/or municipal discharges. These pollutants include the persistent organic pollutants or POPs which can develop dangerous effects to human health and the ecosystem. In addition, they are reported detected in all the environmental components including the atmosphere, water resources, soils, sediments and biota. Since the discovery of the insecticides DDT in human tissue, the fate and behavior of these type of hazardous pollutants have caught the interest of researchers. In this work, our target contaminants are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their methylated derivatives (Me-PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The first part of our study investigated the contamination level of theses POPs in the different compartments of the environment (water, suspended solid matters, sediment, soil). Their occurrence and distribution were evaluated in the dissolved, particulate and sedimentary phases of the freshwater system of the Scheldt basin in the border area between France and Belgium in FRB-RegionNPC "BIOFOZI" program. An ecotoxicological risk assessment was also carried out. The same investigations were also conducted in soil samples originating from northern France and from Madagascar. The second part of the present work concern a feasibility study of PAHs-contaminated soil bio-treatment (bioremediation)

Повний текст джерелаProstate cancer (PCa) is the most frequent type of cancer in Western countries. Advanced age, ethno-geographic origin and the presence of a family history of CaP are the main clearly established risk factors. The effects of exposure to synthetic chemicals with hormonal properties, also called endocrine disruptors (EDCs), on PCa are also are suspected. The main objective of this thesis is to evaluate the relationships between plasma concentration of persistent organochlorine pollutants with hormonal properties, such as DDE (the main metabolite of DDT) and PCBs as well polymorphisms of selected genes involved in xenobiotic (GSTM1, GSTT1) and estrogens (CYP17, CYP19, CYP1B1, COMT, UGT1A1) metabolism, and the occurrence of PCa or its recurrence after treatment with radical prostatectomy. This project is based on data obtained from the population-based case-control study (KARUPROSTATE) in Guadeloupe and from cases treated by radical prostatectomy

Повний текст джерелаThe river contamination with persistent and emerging organic pollutants has raised an increasing concern about their impact on exposed ecosystems. Small Mediterranean coastal rivers have great and fast variations of hydrological flow along the year and can rapidly bring to the mediterranean sea the contamination occurring in the coastal area, especially where population density is high. The Kadicha river basin in Northern Lebanon is an illustrative example of multiple pressures encountered in the Mediterranean basin: it is a small coastal river affected by disorganized and rapid urbanization, a population growth and a chronic default of wastewater collection and treatment. In this context, various contaminants, witness of different anthropic activities were selected and analyzed within the Kadicha river basin. The main objective of this thesis was to determine the impact of anthropogenic activities on the Kadicha River watershed through the study of the contamination with persistent and emerging organic pollutants. Then, the potential environmental risk associated with their presence was assessed. Among emerging contaminants, several compounds having different physico-chemical properties were selected: personal care products (ultraviolet absorbents, musks), insecticides, biocides and surfactants (alkylphenols) and pharmaceutical products. Thus 41 hydrophobic compounds and 23 hydrophilic compounds were studied in sediments and water respectively. The environmental matrices were collected during two sampling campaigns corresponding to wet and dry seasons along sites impacted by urban, rural and mixture land uses (residential and agricultural zones). The results indicate : i) a detection of the totality of persistant organic pollutants and personal care products, insecticides, biocides and surfactants and 6 pharmaceuticals were detected, ii) a higher contamination (in terms of concentrations and diversity of molecules) in urban than in rural zones, iii) a selection of potential markers of urbanization (permethrin, galaxolide and UV-326) iv) an environmental risk for several compounds (ofloxacine (pharmaceutical), low molecular weight PAHs and polychlorinated biphenyls) was identified and v) a higher potential risk associated with the presence of persistent organic pollutants. These results can be considered a knowledge base on anthropogenic pressures and levels of contamination with persistent and emerging organic pollutants in the Kadicha river watershed. The data acquired as well as the potential environmental risks associated with the presence of certain molecules in the Kadicha river watershed lead to propose these molecules as a part of future monitoring programs for anthropized rivers in the Mediterranean basin

Повний текст джерелаThe quality of indoor environments is now a major public health concern. People spend nearly 90% of their time indoors where they are exposed to pollutants such as semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) suspected of adverse health effects. Dust ingestion is a significant route of exposure to some of these SVOCs, especially for children. To characterize this exposure, it is necessary to consider the oral bioaccessibility of SVOCs, defined as the fraction of pollutant released into the gastrointestinal tract and available for absorption. In this context, the objectives of this PhD thesis are to (i) develop and validate a simple method for measuring the oral bioaccessibility of SVOCs in indoor dust and (ii) produce bioaccessibility data for SVOCs of health interest This article-based thesis consists of three chapters: a scientific context, which presents the sources and toxicity of SVOCs, then describes their presence in school air and dust, before addressing the different routes of human exposure; a state of the art on the oral bioaccessibility of SVOCs in dust; and the proposal of a simplified method for measuring this bioaccessibility, its validation, and its application to first samples. This work concludes on a broader context than ingestion by establishing perspectives that also consider inhalation and dermal bioaccessibility, in order to characterize the overall exposure to COSV in indoor environments

Повний текст джерелаThe global production of waste is increasing rapidly, posing a source of threat to living beings, human health and the environment. Most of the waste produced is disposed of in poorly controlled landfills, especially in third world countries such as Lebanon. The waste is subjected to degradation processes resulting in the release of many toxic substances mainly leachate which is loaded with pollutants constituting a major source of environmental pollution. In Lebanon, waste is disposed of in uncontrolled landfills without any prior sorting. The Tripoli landfill is one of the most dangerous landfills in Lebanon due to the disposal of leachate in the aquatic environment without any treatment. Our research work aims to study the physico-chemical characteristics; the temporal and seasonal variation in the quality of the leachate from the Tripoli landfill in northern Lebanon, and the estimation of the probable risk of leachate in the study area. In order to meet these objectives, several sampling campaigns were carried out covering the summer and winter periods, as well as the old and new cells of the body of the landfill. The variation of the 100 leachate quality parameters, namely dissolved organic components; inorganic macro-components; metallic trace elements; and xenobiotic organic compounds were monitored according to standard methods of wastewater analysis using specific laboratory equipment. Analyzes of the leachate quality showed a large variation between the two-landfill units. The content of the majority of pollutants (organic and mineral) detected in the new landfill unit is much higher than that found in the old unit. This indicates the heterogeneous state of the landfill body and the influence of age on the quality of the leachate. The quantity and quality of the leachate is strongly correlated with climatic conditions and it depends on the pollutant studied, reflecting the complexity of the seasonal effect on the quality of the leachate from the Tripoli landfill. High values of LPI (Leachate Pollution Index) and leachate pH were found which show the age of the Tripoli landfill. High values of LPI and the annual flow of pollutants (organic and mineral) were found, which shows the high toxicity of the leachate as well as the occasional pollution of the different behaviors of the neighboring aquatic environment (Abou Ali River and Mediterranean Sea). The results obtained in this study give a clear picture of the leachate quality of the Tripoli landfill; which will be used to set corrective and preventive actions for the hazardous situation of the landfill, and to attract the attention of local and national managers to limit the danger and move towards a good management of leachate rejected by the establishment of a specific treatment system of leachate

Повний текст джерелаOrganic contaminants are harmful substances present in the environment that can affect human health and ecosystems. Among them, pharmaceutical compounds and pesticides, are linked to many diseases in humans, such as cancer, respiratory disorders, and neurological disorders. They can also affect non-target species in the environment, including beneficial insects. In the case of pesticides, widely used in agriculture and other fields, alternatives are under consideration. Biopesticides, which are complex substances derived from natural sources such as plants and microorganisms, present a promising alternative to pesticides. They are presumed to be less harmful; however, the existing regulations are not well adapted to these substances, and current parameters, like DT50 and DT90, are not suitable for studying the degradation of biopesticides. Therefore, new parameters need to be developed to study the fate and impact of biopesticides. At CRIOBE research unit, a new method called Environmental Metabolic Footprinting (EMF) has been developed. This method is based on the use of non-target metabolic LC-MS in order to study the environmental fate and impact of organic contaminants and in particularly complex substances like biopesticides by analyzing the environmental matrix meta-metabolome, which includes both the endometabolome (environmental matrix metabolome) and the xenometabolome (organic contaminant compounds and their degradation products). The aim of my PhD was to bring new developments to the EMF approach in order to set up an approach for the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of organic contaminants in soil and sediment environmental matrices. New parameters were set-up and additional -omics approaches were introduced. In the first chapter, I focus on determining the optimal chemical extraction method and the optimal DNA extraction kit for analyzing the fate and impact of organic contaminants in sediment matrices. Four chemical extraction methods were compared, and for DNA extraction, five commercial kits were tested. Using LC-MS results, I identified the optimal chemical extraction method, and by analyzing alpha and beta diversity metrics, the best DNA extraction kit was selected. These findings will make the EMF approach suitable and well-adapted for studying organic contaminants in sediment matrices. The second chapter centers on the development of a statistical workflow to study the fate of organic contaminants such as biopesticides (e.g., Beloukha). This workflow includes the development of a new parameter, dissipation time, which corresponds to the time required for the dissipation of organic contaminants. A 57-day kinetic experiment was conducted on a soil matrix (microcosm) and the bioherbicide Beloukha. Using ad-hoc workflow and develo pedscripts, we were able to extract biopesticide compounds from the meta-metabolome and determine the dissipation time of Beloukha. In the third chapter, I focus on the impact of Beloukha on biodiversity. Bacterial and eukaryotic metabarcoding (16S and 18S Ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) genes) were performed. The results show that biopesticide compounds significantly impacted bacteria and microeukaryotes, whereas no significant effect was observed on metazoa. Additionally, we were able to identify the specific taxa impacted and the metabolites responsible. In conclusion, this work has led to significant improvements in the EMF approach, making it more integrative and suitable for studying the fate and impact of organic contaminants in different types of matrices (soil, sediment, etc.), the introduction of genomic approach will help to determine in more details the impact of the organic contaminant on biodiversity. The new developments such as dissipation time will help update existing regulations, making them more suitable for complex substances and ensuring the safe use of biopesticides to preserve ecosystem balance

Повний текст джерелаLebanon coastal zone (LCZ) which extends over 220 km along the Eastern Mediterranean Sea is a typical case of most coastal areas of the developing countries in the Mediterranean region, where the combination of a wide range of anthropogenic activities are contributing to water pollution and environmental degradation, by the direct and indirect release of a large number of pollutants into the sea via atmospheric and river inputs. Amongst the numerous environmental concerns we are facing, the marine environment is one of the top priorities that must be addressed. Due to its ecological importance, the evaluation of coastal sediment quality constitutes an important area of research to give a clear picture of water pollution status. Much attention was paid of some priority pollutants such as persistent organic pollutant (POPs) and heavy metals as known to be toxic, persistent and bio-accumulative, carcinogenic and mutagenic. There is an urgent need to survey the levels of these pollutants in sediments due to the great lack of information in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea in general and particularly in Lebanese coastal zone which render our study very important and useful regionally and locally by local authority and policy makers during coastal zone management. The semi-enclosed basins such as ports and bays are very vulnerable ecosystem where build-up greatly amount of these pollutants in sediments. This why we focus on our studies of the assessment of ports sediment quality of some possible hotspots where the re-suspension and oxidation of anoxic sediment occur frequently. A special attention was taken to Tripoli harbour which is the second Port of Lebanon due to its location near some reserved island. The pollution levels of LCZ by these pollutants are assigned as moderate to high. An emergency proposal plan was prepared for Tripoli Harbour, this will assists harbour authority to response for all fire and oil spill accidents as a first step for a durable development inside this promising harbor

Повний текст джерелаInnovative analytical methods are needed to monitor these organic pollutants in response to climate change. High-resolution mass spectrometry coupled with atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI-HRMS) associated with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) is a state-of-the-art tool for the analysis of non-polar aromatic molecules. Indeed, multicomponent mixtures and new dopant delivery system (piezoelectric printhead) have been developed for APPI applications to improve the ionization and detection performance of PAHs during atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry. This allowed us to separate and detect 14 of the 18 studied PAHs at low pg/µl concentrations with high mass accuracies of ≤4 ppm in 5 minutes. In addition, these innovations improved the limits of detection and quantification (LOD and LOQ) of the PAHs tested by 2 to 10 times. Secondly, in order to understand the detailed ionization mechanisms leading to the formation of radical cations ([M]+•), and to the formation of [M–H]+ ions for a class of derivatives of TPD- N-substituted, multiple experimental studies have been investigated. Thus, only one radical cation type, [M]+•, was observed for PAHs using ethanol-based multicomponent dopants. On the other hand, [M–H]+ ions for N-alkyl-TPD derivatives were observed in greater abundance under APPI conditions. In addition, the halogenated benzene-type dopant and the length of the alkyl chain (CnH2n+1), with n ≥4, influenced the formation of [M–H]+ ions

Повний текст джерелаThe xenobiotic metabolism (XM) genes involved in the activation and elimination of environmental carcinogens may modulate breast cancer risk, but their effects in breast cancer have been little studied and are poorly understood. The objectives of the PhD were to study the role of XM genes in breast cancer on the one hand, and in the biological levels of suspected breast carcinogens on the other. The analyses were based on a population-based case-control study on breast cancer (CECILE study). We investigated the association of breast cancer (1) with NAT2 gene variants that determine the type of slow or rapid acetylator in each individual; (2) with polymorphisms of XM genes that were studied jointly at the gene and at the XM pathway level using a gene set method. In each of these approaches, interactions with tobacco consumption were studied. In a final section, we sought to identify polymorphisms of XM genes that predict blood concentrations of persistent organochlorine pollutants (p,p'-DDE and PCB153) among the controls of the CECILE study. The risk of breast cancer was increased in women with a NAT2 genetic profile of rapid acetylators compared to women with a profile of slow acetylators. Among slow acetylators, current smokers had an increased risk of breast cancer compared to non-smokers, indicating an interaction between tobacco smoking and NAT2 genotype. The gene set approach showed that polymorphisms at the level of some XM genes and at the level of the entire pathway were collectively associated with breast cancer. The association between breast cancer and all pathway XM polymorphisms was observed in female smokers, indicating a role for tobacco smoking in this association. Finally, we have shown that CYP2B6 gene was a determinant of blood levels of p,p'-DDE and PCB153. Our results highlight a role of XM genes in breast cancer that is explained by their function in the metabolism and elimination of environmental carcinogens

Повний текст джерелаIn a context where environmental concerns due to pollution are growing on a global scale, monitoring of environmental pollution is a major research challenge in order to preserve as much as possible a healthy and sustainable environment. Indeed, the responsible and continuous monitoring of the environment escorted by the development of "green" pest control alternatives could certainly decelerate or even inhibit the spread of harmful pollutants into the entire biosphere. In this context, the main objectives of this thesis are intended firstly to characterize air quality by a biomonitoring-based approach and, secondly, to develop a biopesticide of algal origin, that allows the protection of post-harvested citrus fruit, as an alternative to the use of conventional chemical treatments. In order to answer the first objective, multi-residues extraction methods were developed. These methods were either specific to a family of pesticides such as dithiocarbamates or wider and more general regarding numerous pollutants such as pesticides, PAHs and PCBs. The latter were based either on the ASE-SPE-SPME, or on the QuEChERS-SPME, and formed the base of environmental biomonitoring studies undertaken. These monitoring studies allowed the assessment of spatial and temporal changes in air quality through natural species acting as biological sensors of environmental pollution and subsequently allowing the estimation of pollution in well-defined areas. To answer the second objective aqueous extracts of green algae, Ulva linza and Ulva lactuca, were prepared and tested as in vivo and in vitro antifungal agents, in order to study their ability to inhibit the development of Penicillium digitatum on post-harvested citrus fruits. A potential of post-harvested citrus fruits’ protection against this fungus was proved, giving hope to the reliability of this approach as a biological alternative for the replacement of potentially toxic chemical pesticides

Повний текст джерелаCrop residues are organic inputs to soil that enhance soil carbon stocks. Although, their decomposition in soils have been showed to cause higher nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions. On analysing related literature, we found that the position of residue incorporation affects these gaseous emissions. We carried out laboratory experiments with three different soil - small particled sandy, calcareous clayey and slightly calcareous clayey soils, with red clover and wheat residues incorporated in them. The residues were incorporated in three positions in soil microcosms - on the surface, mixed in the top layer and layered between two soil layers, to simulate real world scenarios. We found that surface placed residues on soil had the highest ammonia fluxes. While layered and mixed residues had higher nitrous oxide fluxes. The fluxes from red clover residue were higher than wheat owing to high nitrogen in the former. We used this flux data obtained to test a constructed nitrous oxide and and ammonia emission model by coupling CANTIS, NOE and ammonia volatilisation models. We found that the model simulations were underestimated although they were corresponding well qualitatively with the experimental observations

Повний текст джерелаAircraft emit important amounts of particulate and gaseous matter in the atmosphere contributing on the one hand to local air pollution and on the other hand to the atmospheric radiative forcing and to climate change. Introducing alternative fuels in aviation can be considered as a viable option to reducing the impact of aviation, being economically and environmentally sustainable. These selected biofuels tend to have lower aromatic and sulphur contents inducing a simultaneous reduction in sulphuric acid and soot emissions. However modifying the nature and composition of the fuel used can entail unexpected consequences. It is therefore essential to study and determine the evolution of aerosols in the aircraft plume. To manage this task, a microphysical trajectory box, previously tested with standard kerosene, has been developed. After an assessment concerning the typical emissions from the combustion of biofuels in aviation, simulations have been undertaken in order to predict aerosol evolution. Several microphysical processes have been revised such as droplet homogeneous freezing or the behaviour of organic compounds

Повний текст джерелаSeveral molecular weights humic-like compounds were synthesised by oxidation and polymerisation of catechol and glycine or triglycine, and compared to natural suspended matters extracts (Moselle River). The reaction kinetics were monitored by infra-red and fluorescence. This showed the role of the incorporated nitrogen in the overall fluorescence spectra. Furthermore, it bas been correlated to their air/water interface behaviour. The binding capacity of several priority pollutants with these organic molecules was quantified using fluorescence derived methods. Atrazine and sulcotrione (herbicides), as well as a non-ionic nonyl phenol (surfactant) present no significant fluorescence quenching with humic substances. An entrapment of pyrene (Hydroxy Aromatic Polycyclic, HAP) was shown using fluorescence and interfacial tension measurements. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) and Cet yI Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) interact with these molecules as well. This was shown at the molecular level, using fluorescence quenching of the humic like material. Also, this interaction was pointed out using air/water interfacial tension measurements. The coagulation mechanism between ferric nitrate and natural as well as synthetic organic molecules bas been developed thanks to this technique. Iron status remains unchanged as far as its oxidation status is concerned. However, different organic matter complexation sites could be discriminate by iron loss- spectroscopy (EELS) coupled with Mossbauer technique. Finally, optimum conditions for pyrene removal seem to be independant of the optimum coagulation dose. Conformational changes of organic structures could be involved in the mechanism

The very high sensitivity of the sensors has been achieved by combining the use of a genetically-modified (GM) acetylcholinesterase (AChE) with an oriented immobilisation method based on His-Ni affinity on magnetic beads. The selectivity of the system has been obtained by using phosphotriestérase (PTE), an enzyme isolated from Pseudomonas diminuta, which has the capability of hydrolysing certain OPs. A bi-enzymatic sensor associating AChE and PTE has allowed the selective detection of CPO and CFV in simple solutions. The analysis of OPs mixtures has been then performed by using an artificial neural network incorporating three sensors, two mono-enzymatic (wild AChE or GM-AChE) and one bi-enzymatic (GM-AChE + PTE). This system has allowed the specific detection of the two OPs in a wide range of concentrations. A complementary study has shown that immobilizing PTE into a column integrated in a flow system allows the detoxification of surface waters contaminated by the two studied OPs. Finally, the last part of this work has been devoted to the study of a new potential mediator for thiocholine oxidation : PEDOT-PSS

Повний текст джерелаConducting polymers can be used as active materials of sensing devices that find application in different areas, such as quality control of products in industries such as food and beverage, cosmetics and solvents, in the monitoring of air quality for environmental and safety purposes, and as an auxiliary tool in the diagnosis of diseases. In spite of this, as a general rule, the details of the prevailing interactions of the volatile compounds and the polymer are not well understood. For this reason, we have focused the work of this thesis on the characterization of the interactions between vapors of volatile organic compounds and thin films of conducting polymers. These films, that were the active components of the sensors, were prepared atop of different geometry of interdigitated electrodes via electropolymerization, where several preparation parameters (such as doping agents nature and concentrations, monomer nature, thermal annealing) were observed to assure an homogeneous growth of the polymeric film. Several characterizations such as electrochemical studies, AFM observations and UV-VIS-NIR spectra studies were used to obtain detailed information about the interaction mechanisms between VOC and conducting polymers. We have also measured the contact angle of water, formamide and diiodomethane deposited on the surface of the polymeric films to evaluate surface free energy (and its acid-base and dispersive components). The selectivity and sensitivity of the polymeric sensors when exposed to different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have shown to be dependent not only of the properties of the analyzed VOC but also on the nature of the counter-ion used to dope the polypyrrole film. As a final conclusion, we can say that as a result of this work it becomes possible to optimize the design of an arrangement of sensors such that both a better sensitivity and a better selectivity sensitivity to a given chemical environment can be achieved

Повний текст джерелаThe aim of this study is to investigate the consequences of the fertirrigation on a sandy soil in Porquerolles Island (France) on a peach trees field irrigated by wastewater for 15 years and another one which was never irrigated and was used as a reference. We followed physical and chemical properties of both soils at three depths (0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40-60 cm). To study the role of natural organic matter in the heavy metals transfer, notably copper, chromium, lead and cadmium, we made sequential extractions for metal and soil organic matter. Batch and column expermiments used to study heavy metals and soil interactions, showed the existence of a competition between copper and chromium in a static and dynamic point of view. Our experimentals results were validated by the PHREEQC and STAINMOD hydrogeochemical interactive code. Finally, this study on the metal transfer in soil made in laboratory was completed by in situ study. Both field study sites were equipped by tensionmeters, humidimeters and lysimeters All these data permitted to follow the profil of heavy metals, dissolved organic carbon and majors in soil solution and to calculated hydric balance of the soil

Повний текст джерелаEnvironmental and human health protection is a scientific and ethical concern. Dioxin/furan compounds, produced from waste incineration process among other, are ones of the most dangerous pollutants due to their stability and ability to bio-accumulate. Polychlorobenzenes are often referred as model molecules of these compounds and will be used as it in this PhD work. Thanks to their microporous organized structures which confer to them remarkable adsorption capacities, zeolites and Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are interesting materials to trap these organic pollutants. Their shaping as beads for example offer the advantage to overcome problems such as clogging or excessive pressure losses that can appear for an industrial application. Therefore, the aim of this PhD is to prepare and characterize zeolite and MOF, to shape them and to study their adsorption properties for polychlorobenzenes/dioxins/furans. All zeolites and MOFs have been selected and prepared in order to optimize their structural, textural and morphological characteristics for the intended application. A study on the shaping of the FAU-type zeolite has allowed the development of beads with good mechanical and adsorption properties. The different polychlorobenzenes/dioxins/furans adsorption tests into gas and liquid phases allowed identifying the best solids for the selective adsorption of these pollutants in waste incineration plant emissions

Повний текст джерелаMillions of tons of sediments are dredged every year leading to a need for a sustainable management. Both studied sediments, stored in anoxic conditions under a layer of water (raw sediment), and in oxic conditions submitted to natural weathering (weathered sediment), showed high contamination of copper, lead and zinc, concentrated mainly in the finer fraction. Reactive phases such as sulfides and organic matter were observed, with which copper and zinc are partially linked. An innovative experimental set-up coupling an oxygen-consumption test with a column leaching test has been developed; this set-up highlighted the sulfides reactivity which is still occurring in the weathered sediment, despite years of natural aging. The biological component of this reactivity has been also studied, through a qualitative assessment of the impact of iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on pH and Eh of sediments. Although high amount of carbonates responsible for important neutralization potential were detected, bacterial community of neutrophilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria has been able to lower the pH until 4.5 – 5 units. This reactivity is controlled by submitting both sediments to a stabilization/solidification treatment with hydraulic binders. Environmental assessment with kinetic test in weathering cells and monolithic leaching test demonstrated that trace metals appear well stabilized for both sediments. Thus, their valorization in cemented mortars has been assessed. When total sediments were fully substituted to sand, they showed poor mechanical strength. However, when a sieving treatment for removing of the fine contaminated fraction was applied, the sediments mortars revealed good mechanical strength for use in non-structural applications. This research confirmed thus that the reuse of the coarser fraction of a marine sediment, raw or weathered, offered an efficient and interesting way of treatment and valorization

Повний текст джерелаThe work is an interdisciplinary framework, at the interface of the sol-gel chemistry, biology and physics of materials. First, we are interested to the study of a silica matrix obtained by sol-gel process from a mixture of colloidal silica and sodium silicate. The goal was to understand the interactions between the precursors and to study the effect of different synthesis parameters on the structure of the matrix in order to find the best optical and mechanical properties. These matrices have been extensively characterized using various techniques (UV-Visible absorption, IR, TGA, BET, NMR, TEM and SEM). This study allows us for the first time to choose final properties and to specify the initial combination to get them in terms of concentrations of precursors and pH. Next, we studied the effect of the matrix properties on the survival of photosynthetic encapsulated cells and we got phyco-compatible materials with a wide range of optical and mechanical properties. After precising the best synthesis conditions for the survival of microorganisms, one could proceed to study the functionality in the presence of toxic contaminants (heavy metals Cd (II) and Pb (II) and a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: anthracene) and we managed to get a functional biosensor. Interestingly, some specificity of detection could be obtained according to the combination of microalga / selected matrix

Повний текст джерелаPolychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two families of hydrophobic compounds sharing some similar environmental properties. Previous studies have demonstrated that these compounds could affect fish life-history traits. However, few studies have focused on environmental situations. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part aimed to evaluate the effects of a realistic mixture of PCBs and PBDEs on the life-history traits of zebrafish. The results showed a slower growth, but to a larger asymptotic length, and delayed spawning probability in exposed fish. In addition, offspring issued from early spawning events of exposed fish exhibited a lower larval survival under starvation condition. The second part aimed to identify, on the basis of a bioenergetic model (DEB), the physiological modes of action (PMoA) of PCBs and PBDEs. Two potential PMoAs have been revealed: the first one was through an increase of the fraction of energy allocated to somatic maintenance and growth and the second one was through an increase of the cost of production of an egg. The third part focused on the population dynamical consequences of the individual life-history effects of PCBs and PBDEs. The results showed a lower abundance, a higher biomass and a higher risk of overexploitation in exposed population compared to control population. The results of this thesis could be a helpful tool for sustainable management of fish stocks that take into account the effects of multiple contaminations that are added to the fishing pressure

Повний текст джерелаWorld production of plastics has increased steadily for the past decades leading to a major contamination of the worldwide aquatic ecosystems recently estimated at more than five trillion plastic pieces floating the surface of the oceans. Microplastics (plastic particles < 5 mm) are introduced into aquatic environments directly as industrial raw material (plastic pellets, cosmetics, clothing) or indirectly via the fragmentation of larger plastics. This emerging contaminant represents an increasing ecological concern for science and society. The present study focused on the microplastic contamination of the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France), a macrotidal coastal ecosystem characterized by intense anthropogenic activity. The main objectives were: (1) to evaluate the contamination of environmental matrices (surface water, subtidal sediment and biota) by microplastics, and (2) to identify their potential role as vector of chemicals and bacteria in the bay of Brest.Methodological developments were first conducted to improve microplastic extraction from environmental matrices as well as their rapid morphological and chemical identification by Raman micro-spectrometry. The field investigations showed that the ecosystem of the bay of Brest is contaminated by microplastics with mean concentrations of 0.24 ± 0.35, and 0.97 ± 2.08 (mean ± standard deviation) in surface water and sediment, respectively. Microplastic contamination in surface water and sediment was dominated by polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene microparticles.Spatial microplastic distribution appeared to be related to proximity to urbanized areas and to hydrodynamic in the bay. Preliminarily results of microplastic contamination in marine bivalves demonstrated relatively low contamination (0.01 ± 0.04, and 0.08 ± 0.34 for mussels and cockles, respectively) by microplastics (mainly polyethylene and polypropylene fragments), however this could be partly related to the methodological limitation identified here (e.g. exclusion of fibers). Organic pollutant (PAH, PCB and pesticides) were detected on floating microplastics at levels (not detected – 49,763 ng g-1, mean ± SD) similar to those measured in sediment and bivalves suggesting low risks in transferring hazardous chemicals in local marine organisms upon microplastic ingestion. Finally, distinct bacterial community assemblages were demonstrated on microplastics as compared with surrounding surface water; the Vibrio genus was identified as a discriminant biomarker of the plastic matrix. Overall, this work provides a first and thorough assessment of the microplastic contamination in the bay of Brest and solid methodological recommendations for further work

Повний текст джерелаThe anthropogenic impact on rivers has significantly increased following the industrial revolutioninitiated by Western countries. Thus, changes in the geomorphology of rivers for water storage andnavigation, the conversion of land for agricultural, industrial and urbanization purposes illustrate thisenvironmental pressure, which results, among other things, in an increase in discharges of variouscontaminants into environmental compartments, particularly rivers. Therefore, part of these dischargescan end up in suspended particulate matter, which is then considered as storage wells, which transit inrivers. River development, particularly the construction of dams, encourages the sedimentation of these contaminated particles over time. These sediments of anthropogenic origin, also called legacy sediments, are therefore witnesses to human activities and make it possible to reconstruct the temporal trajectories of contamination within watersheds. The Eure River, a major tributary of the Seine estuary, has experienced significant anthropogenic pressures since the twentieth century. The temporal reconstruction of anthropogenic pressures has required the combination of different methodological approaches: (i) a diachronic analysis of the morphological modifications of the river was carried out, in conjunction with (ii) an analysis of the sedimentary dynamics and the nature of the sediment deposits by coupling geophysical, sedimentological and geochemical methods, and (iii) the setting up of a network for monitoring the hydro-sedimentary behaviour with continuous sampling of suspended particulate matter. Significant geomorphological changes have occurred in the lower reaches of the watershed, with the main consequences being an outlet moved some ten kilometres in the direction of a dam and the formation of hydraulic annexes favouring the accumulation of sediments as early as the 1940s. These made it possible to show that the Eure River watershed had experienced significant contamination, the consequences of which are still being recorded despite the cessation of activities or uses. The temporal trends of trace metal and metalloid elements showed strong contaminations in As in the 1940s and contaminations of industrial origin in Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag and Cd in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as contaminations in Sb and Pb in 1990–2000. The latter are still recorded despite the cessation of the activities responsible for the discharges, as evidenced by the results from the suspended particulate matter currently collected in the river. Like most trace metals, organic contaminants such as PAHs showed significant contamination during the 1940–1960s, with signatures indicating a predominantly pyrogenic origin. PCBs showed significant contamination during the period 1950–1970, in connection with the production and national uses of mixtures composed mainly of low chlorinated congeners. Finally, interest in a third family of persistent organic contaminants, organochlorine pesticides, showed the use of lindane and DDT, particularly during the 1940–1970 period, and highlighted the post-ban use of lindane and the presence of a metabolite of DDT several decades after the cessation of its use, in connection with the increase in erosion of cultivated soils

Повний текст джерелаThe quality of the environment has become a growing concern in the recent years for Quebec citizens. Phenomena such as climate change, persistent organic pollutants and the depletion of the ozone layer are caused by several sources, the effects of which cannot be distinguished one from the other and/or linked to a specific event. Furthermore, these phenomena have yet to create damage to Quebec residents in order to create the necessary standing for the introduction of legal proceedings. Also, the scientific uncertainty related to the source of potential damage and to the proof of said damage makes it impossible to legally attack the emitters of the pollutant contributing to this type of environmental phenomena under 1457 C.C.Q. or 976 C.C.Q. We have identified the 3 potential sources of a right to a clean environment which could entitle Quebec citizens to go before the courts in environmental matters, even in the absence of specific damages to their person or property. We have analysed the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms and the Environmental Quality Act and looked at the potential right to a clean environment possibly contained therein and the legal actions that could be taken to ensure their respect. Considering the weakness of what our legal system had to propose, we have developed solutions that could be put forward in order to allow the war against climate change and other environmental phenomena of the same nature to become legally actionable.
