This paper describes the regulation of Islamic economics and the urgency of its development, the post-reform Islamic economic, regulatory system, and analyzes the orientation of Indonesian Islamic economic regulation from a political economy perspective. This article's method is a descriptive analysis by analyzing political phenomena that occur in the formulation of Islamic economic regulations in post-reform Indonesia. This qualitative research uses literature studies. The development of Islamic financial regulation in Indonesia is relatively late when referring to Islamic finance development in other countries. This is related to the national political conditions, which are generally less responsive to institutions labeled Islamic. The dramatic changes in Indonesian politics since the fall of the Soeharto regime have made room for real democracy. Islamic banking regulation responds to the Islamic banking industry's development, which requires assurance of legal certainty and legal justice in a clear regulation. The increase in the role of the government in dealing with Islamic economic problems has a big role. According to Islam, economic policies must be supported by social responsibility, limited economic freedom by sharia, multi-ownership recognition, namely private ownership, state ownership, and a high work ethic. The interpretation and development of Islamic economic regulations can be richer and more important if it is based on concrete experiences of development in implementing Islamic economic regulations in Indonesia. In seeking economic laws in line with the rububiyah principle, practical experiences are material for validating Islamic economic laws.

Money politic or vote buying in the election is something has plagued all the societies that claimed the application of democratic form in governance. The minority is able to monopolize the votes of the majority in their favor using financial sufficiency, political promises and the issues of mass media. This phenomenon can lead to bribery, perjury and treason that have negative impact on the economy of Indonesia. The researcher used analytical method to explain various aspects of the phenomenon of buying electoral votes and its impact on the economic life in Indonesia. The researcher finally found two significant results. First, vote buying is a major cause of political and administrative corruption in Indonesia. It is the main incubator breeding corrupt leaders, which have negative impact towards economic life in Indonesia such as the increase number of poverty, unstable economy, enrich among political elites, and arbitrariness in determining economic policies taken by the authorities pursuing their own interests. Second, vote buying is widely spread and easily found in the life of the Indonesian society, it seems like an established habit that is hard to eradicate.

This paper aims to investigate the influence of political connection on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expense in Indonesia. We use a sample of 682 firm-year observations between 2010 and 2015. Using the individual-level of political connections, we find that the political connection is an important determinant of CSR expense. The political connection effect is analyzed based on the different characteristics of ownership structure, board structure, and affiliated party. We find that state-owned enterprises and privately-owned enterprises that politically connected are positively associated with CSR expenses. Interestingly, the evidence shows that politically connected board of commissioners are more willing to spend in CSR activities, while politically connected board of directors have no significant concern regarding CSR. Furthermore, politically connected firms that contribute to CSR are from government-leaning firms, while opposition-leaning firms show different matters. The findings are robust using different measures of political connection and controls.

This study aims to establish the record of accomplishment of the strong hallmark of Islamic economic thought and its contribution to economic development. The ideas rooted from the Muslim intellectuals in Indonesia, the scholars of the State Islamic Religious Colleges (PTKIN) as institutions mandated in developing Islamic economics and human resources, were discussed to outline the multifaceted phenomenon of Islamic economic development. This study scrutinizes ideas conveyed in internationally reputed, Sinta 1-indexed, Web of Science-indexed, or Scopus-indexed journals. This study outlined a qualitative approach in the form of library research using content analysis. This study disclosed that Indonesian Muslim intellectuals brought to light the issue of zakah excessing other themes in the Islamic economy as the solution to perennial problems of the social, political, and cultural conditions of Indonesian society. The results of this study contribute to the views of Islamic economic concept and practice as insights and references of its continuous development in Indonesia.

Using the Indonesian Family Life Survey, this paper elucidates the factors related to happiness in Indonesia. Some factors yield results consistent with those in the literature, but other factors such as unemployment and the female gender turn out not to be robust. Some attempts are made to purge endogeneity for past income mobility, social trust, and political environment. Also, measures with a more immediate impact on happiness are exploited for social trust and political environment. The sign of the coefficient on past income mobility is reversed once the variable has been purged of endogeneity. In addition, social trust and political environment are found to have little relationship with happiness.

ABSTRACT: This article rests on the thesis that economic interest is the implicit end of Indonesian political agents. Economic interest, the implicit end, is the main driving force that cause the deterioration of the quality of Indonesian democracy. Various phenomena that cause the deterioration of the quality of Indonesian democracy will be understood and explained through the political strategies of Niccolo Machiavelli as a conceptual framework. Furthermore, the ideal political perspective from Bernhard Sutor which is sustained by Marx’s idea of basic and superstructure will be used to find the implicit end which moves political agents and influences existing political phenomena. This article concludes with a number of thoughts that remind and prepare Indonesian society, especially the readers, to seriously consider their political choices in April 2019, in order to improve the quality of Indonesian democracy. The volume under review is a most welcome addition to the still relatively slimcollection of economics volumes written in English by Indonesian scholars. Thereis an established tradition of senior Indonesian policy makers writing majorscholarly volumes in their fields of expertise before or after holding high office. Onethinks for example of Widjojo Nitisastro’s Population Trends in Indonesia (1970),Radius Prawiro’s Indonesia’s Struggle for Economic Development: Pragmatism inAction (1998), and Soedradjad Djiwandono’s Bank Indonesia and the Crisis: AnInsider’s View (2005), among several others. (It is noteworthy that two of theseauthors were also Bank Indonesia governors.) In an earlier era, Professor SumitroDjojohadikusumo was the trailblazer, combining serious scholarship along withhigh policy responsibilities. It is testimony to Indonesia’s political leaders andgovernance tradition over several decades that policy leadership and seriousscholarship have been able to comfortably and productively co-exist.

This paper examines the historical roots of the emergence of the involvement of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia (ABRI) in the socio-political field, especially several reasons that form the basis of government policy to involve ABRI in the socio-political and economic fields, as well as ABRI’s own efforts to play a role in these fields. This historical approach research concluded that ABRI’s involvement in the socio-political field in Indonesia had begun since the government of Guided Democracy under President Soekarno. Politically, the reason for Soekarno’s inclusion of the military in his government structure was due to the failure of civilian politicians in formulating state ideology with no agreement between parties in the constituent assembly. This failure is considered to endanger national political stability and threaten the integrity of the country. For this reason, President Soekarno recruited the military to balance civilian politicians in his government. Along with its involvement in the socio-political field, ABRI also plays a role in socio-economics. Although at first, this role was limited to securing national private companies which were legacies of foreign companies, but during the New Order government, the dual function of ABRI was confirmed and its role was wider. Almost all strategic economic sectors are controlled by ABRI.

Indonesia was one of the first developing countries to receive Soviet aid on a large scale. Declassified Soviet and East German archival sources, which illuminate the discussions and other interactions of government leaders and Communist party officials, diplomats, and experts from the two sides, greatly enrich our understanding of this important case of Nikita Khrushchev's ambitious policy in the Third World. This article presents for the first time detailed, reliable information about the amount, composition, and goals of Soviet aid to Indonesia during the Khrushchev era. A close analysis of this case contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms of the global Cold War, which deeply affected center and periphery alike.

The shifting of global political-economy since early 1990s has been followed by the expansion of regional economy cooperation forum establishment, such as: NAFTA (North America Free Trade Area), EFTA (European Free Trade Area) and APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation). Indonesia, together with the other South East Asia countries who join ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia), is also actively involved in engaging regional economy cooperation forums, such as: ASEAN-China FTA, ASEAN-India FTA, ASEAN-Jepang Economic Partnership, ASEAN Regional Economi Partnership (ARCEP). The establishment of those economic regionalism is apparently a strategy in responding economical globalization. Indonesia’s involvement in those regional economy cooperations has increased its national commitment, both in going through economical liberization as well as in building its national economy competitiveness. This research describes Indonesian political challanges in responding the dynamic changes of that global economy.

This article aims to comparatively view the political configuration in Indonesia in the New Order and the Reformation era related to the formation of law in Islamic economics. Recently, Islamic economics has become an issue that has attracted the interest of scholars and economic practitioners as it is the potential to become a large industry. Legal products and several policies were born as evidence of the development of Islamic economic law in Indonesia, such as the Halal Product Guarantee Act, the ratification of Government Regulations regarding the implementation of halal product guarantees, to the merger of conventional banks into shari'ah Banks. These phenomena show that the political configuration in the Reformation era is fertile ground for economic development. Then, what about the Political Configuration in the New Order era? This article is a legal study using historical and political approaches strengthened by legal political theories. The study found that there are different characteristics of Islamic economic law between authoritarian and democratic political configurations. This article emphasizes that the character of Islamic economic law in the New Order era tends to be orthodox; legal control was tightly held by the political elite and must be followed by the community (top-down). Meanwhile, the Reformation era brought the direction of Islamic economic law to responsive legal characteristics. The society holds legal control by making the elites as policymakers for the development of Islamic economic law (bottom-up).

Indonesia's 1999 decentralization law gave local governments in Indonesia an unprecedented opportunity to adopt prodevelopment policies. In this article, we study whether decentralization has in fact generated improved economic performance in Indonesia. Using a synthetic case control methodology, we argue that Indonesian decentralization has had no discernable effect on the country's national-level economic performance. To explain why not, we use subnational data to probe two political economy mechanisms—interjurisdictional competition and democratic accountability—that underlie all theories linking decentralization to better economic outcomes. Our findings suggest that extreme heterogeneity in endowments, factor immobility, and the endogenous deterioration of local governance institutions can each undermine the supposed development-enhancing promises of decentralized government in emerging economies such as Indonesia.

Political economy concerns with how actual policies deviate from economic optimality. This study evaluates Indonesia’s progresses toward sustainable development goals (SDGs) from the political economy viewpoint. The authors discuss Indonesia’s Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and critically analyse its COVID-19 pandemic control policy given the policy’s importance to SDG 3 (good health and well-being) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth). Indonesia chooses to opt-out strict public health restrictions because of the government’s preoccupation with economic growth, the large number of workers relying on daily income and its state of democratic consolidation. This results in Indonesia’s failure to control the pandemic and to avert economic recession. Indonesia correctly anticipates global vaccine nationalism and secures adequate vaccine supplies primarily from China. Vaccination becomes Indonesia’s key pandemic strategy. This study shows how indispensable partnerships (SDG 17) are for achieving SDGs, presenting the case of the Indonesian Forestry Certification Cooperation’s work in forest certification and sustainable forest management.

Data were analyzed by comparing one information with another, then analyzed using relevant social theories. The results of the study show that the main purpose of the establishment of KAMI is to save Indonesia from bankruptcy because the government is considered to have failed in overcoming corruption, rising prices of basic commodities, and the covid 19 outbreak. noisy national politics as well as disrupting the performance of the government, which is struggling to overcome the COVID-19 outbreak and maintain economic stability. The KAMI movement received support from civil society, especially groups that were against the government, but on the other hand it also received opposition from the state and several elements of society. This can be seen from the rejection of KAMI figures in various regions, as well as being opposed by Jokowi-Maruf volunteers who are members of the Indonesian Homeland Density (KITA).

The paper examines the development of China's economic ties with Southeast Asia over the last two decades, culminating in the inauguration of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) in 2010. Particular reference is made to China's trade ties with Indonesia. Although two-way trade between China and Indonesia has grown rapidly since 2000, Indonesian exports to China are dominated by primary products, while imports from China are dominated by manufactures. While this pattern might reflect short-term comparative advantage in both economies, it is causing some concern in Indonesia. The paper assesses these concerns, and possible political reactions.

This study aims to describe the expression of sharia in contemporary Indonesia especially in the post reform era. In the beginning of reform, sharia appeared as the political actualization indicated with the demand for returning the seven words of the Jakarta Charter to the local government bylaws. Recently, sharia extends its coverage to economic fields, such as accommodation in industry with the emergence of sharia-labeled hotels, halal tourism and the like. This article departs from an argument stating that the extension of the meaning of sharia is inseparable from the interest of actors utilizing its label or brand to show political identity and business interests. This article describes this shift and analyzes the factors that affect this shifting from politics to economics. Drawing from the theoretical perspective of the contemporary sharia, stating that sharia contains a broad spectrum applied to many levels and aspects, this article argues that that sharia no longer has a single normative definition but has encountered meaning development corresponding to the social and historical challenges. This article also shows that sharia expansion into economic fields is now ongoing process in contemporary Indonesia.

ABSTRACTThis research will describe the history of modern Islamic economic and political relations with the law in an effort to formulate various Islamic economic laws. This article also describes the position of the Islamic economy in the Indonesian legal system so that a description of how Islamic economy can be implemented in the Indonesian economy will be obtained. This study aims to find a basis for the development of Islamic economic law in two periods, the New Order and the Reformation Era. So that Islamic economic instruments can be used as an important part of the mainstream of national economic policy, there needs to be a systematic effort to create a sharia economic political design. This design must include three main domains, namely the realm of regulation and the rule of law, the realm of institutional strengthening and expansion, and the realm of internalizing sharia economic values in the life of the state and society.Keyword: Islamic Economics, Politics of Law, and Governance ABSTAKPenelitian ini akan menguraikan sejarah hubungan ekonomi dan politik Islam modern dengan hukum dalam upaya merumuskan berbagai UU ekonomi Islam. The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to more social segregation among the world’s people, including in Indonesia. This pandemic has created social, economic, and political inequality. The turning point for getting out of this pandemic is when the COVID-19 vaccine is discovered. This article discusses how politics plays a role in the vaccination program in Indonesia. The vaccination program has already started to be implemented in January 2021, following the issues of an emergency use approval (EUA) permit by Indonesia’s Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (Indonesia: Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM)) and a halal (sacred) fatwa by the Indonesian Ulema Council (Indonesian: Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI)). At some stages of policy implementation, the government has not even been able to provide valid data related to the vaccination program. In this article, researchers explore the problems emerging concerning the COVID-19 vaccination program. Furthermore, researchers analyze the political agenda that is possible to become a health, social, and economic policy intervention in the corridor of the perspective of sociology.

Looking at the historical flow of Islamic development in Indonesia as such, the author took an analysis that the future prospects of Islam in Indonesia have a great opportunity to continue to develop, be it in the fields of politics, economics, education, social, and culture. This can be seen from the history of Islam in Indonesia that continues to develop until now, this is the early stage of the emergence of awareness of the Indonesian nation of the importance of planting religious values in Indonesian society so that the Indonesian nation can meet the future not only with science and technology but also in the balance by IMTAQ. The era of globalization in the 21st century that has begun at this time, Islam in Indonesia has apparently exerted a huge influence on the advancement of Islam in the world. Although the existence of Islam today is really faced with a fairly severe challenge that requires the involvement of various parties concerned. With regard to this, strategic efforts need to be made, among others: by providing knowledge, skills, and piety in all fields (religious, political, economic, social, cultural, educational) so as to give birth to creative, innovative, independent and productive people considering the world to come is a competitive world. Economy and politics influence each other. A changing political map will affect policy to economic conditions and vice versa. Likewise with Islamic economics, its development was influenced by political power during the emergence of Islamic economics until today. Islamic political economy has a positive value for Indonesia in an effort to accelerate the empowerment of small and medium enterprises as an element of economic growth. One of the areas for Islamic economic instruments to become part of national policy is regulation. Through research with qualitative methods and a literature study approach, the researcher wants to analyze the regulations on the Islamic economy in Mojokerto district which has many micro, small and medium enterprises. Researchers conducted this research with the aim of analyzing the sustainability of Islamic economic values to all components of government apparatus and business actors in Mojokerto Regency and at the same time offering regulations to the Mojokerto Regency government which focuses on efforts to increase the size of the Islamic economic industry in institutional expansion. This study provides the results, first, Islamic economic values have not been sustainable in the political economy of Mojokerto Regency. Second, the sustainability of the Islamic economy in Mojokerto Regency can be realized in the political economy of government through policies or regulations that improve the Islamic financial industry by synergizing it with the community to empower MSMEs.

This study aims to examine the presence of politically induced and electorally motivated economic policy in local government budget. Further, the study examine the presence of pre-electoral manipulation through the behavior of budget balance, total expenditures, investment expenditures, and other administrative expenditures including donations, social assistance, and financial assistance expenditure during election year. Samples of the study consists of 451 district municipalities in Indonesia which held direct local elections over the period 2010-2014. The result of the study shows an opportunistic PBC pattern in the budget balance, total expenditures, donation expenditures, and financial assistance expenditures. The result suggest that there is an increase in local budget deficit in election years.Total expenditures also seem to increase duringthe election year, along with donation and financial assistance expenditures. This result supports the notion that elections have a positive effect on the government expenditures through the increase of municipal expenditures, especially expenditures thatare highly visible to electorate.

A by-product of the extension of mass education is the increase in the level of education of those eligible for political offices. This can have a profound impact on the effectiveness of local governments. In this paper, I examine the effects of a large school construction program in Indonesia on local governance and public good provision. The results show that the program led to important increases in the provision of public goods. Furthermore, I provide evidence consistent with the hypothesis that the increase in the education of the village heads was one of the main mechanisms behind these results. In many countries, relationship between decentralization of government activities and the extent of rent extraction by private parties is an important element in the recent debate on institutional design. The topic of corruption was actively, openly and debated in Indonesia by government, its development partners, and a broadly based group of political and civil society leaders are engaged in meetings and exchange on a daily basis. In the ongoing debate on corruption a lot of attention is paid to the role of public sector salaries, particularly in the decentralization era. Based on this phenomenon, the authors want to analyze the relationship between corruption and decentralization. Using OSL model, we can find a very strong and consistent positive association between the two variables across a sample of region, thereby providing some support for theories of decentralization that emphasize its benefits. This association is robust to controlling for a wide range of potential sources of omitted variable bias as well as endogeneity bias. Keywords: Corruption, Decentralization, OSL Model Abstrak. However, the education budget by 20% is considered not able tomaximize the improvement of the quality of education in Indonesia, so the needfor a new policy in increasing the percentage of the budget for education.

The involvement of the military in the global health crisis has started since the COVID-19 outbreak in Indonesia, starting from the implementation of Large-Scale Social Restrictions to the implementation of the new normal adaptation phase, including the acceleration of vaccination. However, this involvement has its pros and cons. A number of parties regard it as something natural, while others criticize the urgency of involving the military. This study focuses on the political communication strategy of the roles of two defense institutions, namely the Indonesian National Army and the Ministry of Defense in dealing with COVID-19. The methodology used is a qualitative research design. Researchers used role theory, political communication concepts, national defense concepts, and pandemic handling concepts to analyze this study. The results of the study show that the TNI has a role in political PR in changing the good image of its institutions and is closely correlated in providing communication from the government, which is strategically in a number of fields such as health, security, and socio-economics in an effort to tackle COVID-19. The Ministry of Defense also plays a strategic role both internally and externally through collaboration with other ministries, domestic private companies, state-owned enterprises in the defense industry sector, and with other countries in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesia has a huge population over 270 million people. The Republic of Indonesia is the largest Muslim state in the world. Its steady economic growth faces a deep challenge due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Indonesian education and medicine systems are insufficient whereas the country nowadays has no high-tech or knowledge-intensive technologies. Indonesia looks a bit marginal facing current challenges, especially in comparison with the developed countries. The poverty rate is high in Indonesia. The country also faces a rise of radical Muslim communities. The COVID-19 pandemic does help the Indonesian military to strengthen again. Many challenges — demographic, economic, social, political and cultural — imply that any Indonesian government has to maneuver between the Armed Forces, Muslim groups, and the poor.

Identifying the characteristics of Indonesian local governments that disclose financial statements looks relevant in order to find out the reasons for local governments in making policies to disclose financial statements. This study aims to examine whether financial condition, financial independence and political competition have an effect on the disclosure of financial statements in local governments, particularly districts/cities in Sumatra, Indonesia. A sample of 151 districts and cities on the Indonesian island of Sumatra were used in this quantitative analysis. The use of cluster sampling due to the implementation of accrual accounting based on the government regulation No. 71 of 2010 is applied in all districts/cities in Sumatra and has the same characteristics. The data analysis technique used in this study is a multiple linear regression with the SPSS test tool. The results reveal that factors influencing the financial statements disclosure is influenced by financial conditions (β = 0.095; p < 0.05), financial independence (β = 0.069; p < 0.05), and political competition (β = 0.038; p < 0.05). Overall, the results show a strong conclusion regarding the factors that affect the financial statements of the Indonesian government. The findings of this investigation can be a useful consideration for local governments in improving the quality of their external communications and improving public governance.

The objective of this study is to analyze the causality between democracy and economic growth in Indonesia for the period of 1995 to 2017. More specifically, this paper also attends to investigate the existence of a long-run relationship between them. This study perform a multivariate cointegration test with political stability as a control variable and cross-check this long-run relationship with an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model approach to cointegration. This study also use the Granger causality test within a vector error correction model (VECM) framework and estimate three different models using a non-linear specification: Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation, Fully Modified OLS (FM-OLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS). The results show cointegration among the variables specified in the model when political stability is taken into account. Indeed, for economic growth and democracy to move together in the long run, they need to be associated with political stability. The tests for Granger causality conducted show a long-run causality running from GDP and political stability to democracy. In other word, the economic growth and political stability Granger cause democracy. It is the economic performance that influences democracy and not the reverse. In short-run, there is neutrality causation between democracy and growth, democracy and political stability, growth and political stability. These results suggest that economic growth through strong institutions is a precondition for democratization.

<p class="abstrakinggris">Rice self-sufficiency is an important programme in Indonesia. The programme has four major targets, i.e. increasing production, stabilizing prices and reserve stocks, and minimizing import. For that purpose, the government gave a mandate to a parastatal, namely National Logistic Agency (Bulog) in implementing the rice policies. Some studies found that involvement of such a parastatal could lead to government failure in budget allocation. The study aimed to estimate social cost of rice self-sufficiency programme based on the implementation of rice instrument policies by Bulog. The study used the national annual data of 2002–2014 period. The method used was the political preference function model to estimate economic rent and dead-weight loss using rice price elasticity of demand and supply. The result showed that in terms of percentage of food security budget, the average of economic rent reached IDR 6.37 trillion per annum (18.54%), while the average of dead-weight loss amounted at IDR 0.90 trillion per annum (2.34%). It proved that rice self-sufficiency programme along with the involvement of Bulog was economically inefficient. The government should provide better agricultural infrastructure, review governmental procurement prices, and stop rice import policy to remedy market failure.<strong><em></em></strong></p>

Motivated by inter-regional disparities condition that occurs persistently, this study examines the Indonesian economy in the long run in order to know whether it tends to converge or diverge. This convergence is based on the Solow Neoclassical growth theory assuming the existence of diminishing returns to capital so that when the developed countries reach steady state conditions, developing countries will continuously grow up to 'catch-up' with developed countries. Based on regional economics perspective, each region can not be treated as a stand-alone unit, therefore, this study also focuses on the influence of spatial dependency and infrastructure. Economical and political situations of a region will influence policy in that region which will also have an impact to the neighboring regions. The estimation results of spatial cross-regressive model using fixed effect method consistently confirmed that the Indonesian economy in the long term will likely converge with a speed of 8.08 percent per year. Other findings are road infrastructure has a positive effect on economic growth and investment and road infrastructure are spatially showed a positive effect on economic growth. In other words, the investment and infrastructure of a region does not only affect the economic growth of that region but also to the economy of the contiguous regions.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between globalization and economic growth in Indonesia. Three globalization indices, economic globalization index, social globalization index and political globalization index, are used to measure the globalization. Johansen’s (1988) cointegration approach is used to estimate the model by using annual data from 1980 to 2014. The results indicate that there is a long-run cointegration relationship between globalization and economic growth in Indonesia. Globalization stimulates Indonesian economic growth in the long run. Meanwhile, political globalization implies short-run effect on the economic growth in Indonesia. From the policy perspective, this results support the argument that the government should take the international integration policy to sustain long-run economic growth.

This paper explores the genealogy of the birth of the economic growth system in Indonesia and Burma. First, it is a major transformation that occurs in both countries in the form of commodification of land, labor and money. And the formation of pluralism in the colonial society. Second, the transformation of capitalism in Burma that enters through the system of bureaucratic governance, education and social order in rural communities. Third, the study of comparative application of economic liberalism in Indonesia and Burma and its social effects. And the emergence of middle class society who came from outside of original community. The author uses Karl Polanyi’s approach for looking at the social effects of economic liberalism, based on the transformation of three things: the privatization of the land, the commodification of labor and the emergence of the system of money and debt. This comparison primarily uses extensive data from J.S Furnivall in view of the application of an economic liberalism system which is then enriched with studies from other economic historians, such as Thomas Lindblad, Anne Booth and the study of political economics, Richard Robison.

This paper discusses the ideas of populism as highlighted by Mouffe and Laclau to analyze its relevance for Indonesian democracy context. Populism is a political style which is a source for change based on the systematic use of rhetorical appeal to the people. This research focuses on populism in relation to democracy which brings forth left and right-wing populism. The concept of populism in general leads us to look at the fact of populism in Indonesia democracy context. Some crisis such us economic crisis, poverty, inequality and the failure of the government in looking after the common will and the common good of people lead to create a ‘populist moment’ particularly in Indonesia context. Therefore, radical democracy and left populism of Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau which this research is focusing on, offers some relevant suggestions to enhance the democratic participation of the people to overcome some crises in Indonesia democracy, which is mostly being co-opted by predatory oligarchy.
