Three-stage networks have been widely studied as a point-to-point network and later, also as a broadcast network. In this paper we consider using such networks for point-to-point calls and broadcasting calls simultaneously. We note that the point-to-point nonblocking property and the broadcast rearrangeable property do not coexist due to different routing strategies. We propose a new routing strategy for broadcast calls which preserves the point-to-point nonblocking property, and keeps the broadcast calls almost rearrangeable when most calls are point-to-point.

Wireless multi-hop ad hoc routing is one of the critical design factors that determine the network performance of various wireless IoT applications. IETF has standardized the point-to-point RPL (P2P-RPL) routing protocol to overcome the inefficient routing overheads of RPL. However, P2P-RPL propagates the route discovery forwarding packets throughout the whole network. P2P-RPL suffers from the high energy consumption and the huge route discovery overhead in low-power and lossy networks (LLNs). In this paper, we propose a novel Location-Aware P2P-RPL (LA P2P-RPL), which achieves the energy-efficient P2P data delivery without reducing the networking reliability. The proposed algorithm introduces the Impulse-Response UWB (IR-UWB) based cooperative multi-hop self localization algorithm and the Location-Aware P2P-RPL algorithm for Indoor IR-UWB based networks. To increase the localization accuracy, smartphone based Inertial Navigation System (INS) with particle filtering is used in indoor multi-hop environments. The performance evaluations for Location-Aware P2P-RPL algorithm are compared with the traditional P2P-RPL and the ER-RPL algorithm to show the significant performance improvements for route discovery overheads and energy consumptions in LLNs.

We develop an optimization-based approach for a point-to-point route planning problem that arises in many large scale delivery systems(for example, less-than-truckload freight, rail, mail and package delivery, communications). In these settings, a firm which must ship goods between many origin and destination pairs on a network needs to specify a route for each origin-destination pair so as to minimize transportation costs and/or transit times. Typically, the cost structure is very complicated. The approach discussed in this paper exploits the structure of the problem to decompose it into two smaller subproblems, each amenable to solution by a combination of optimization and heuristic techniques. One subproblem is an 'assignment' problem with capacity constraints. The other subproblem is a mixed-integer multicommodity flow problem. We propose solution methods based on Lagrangian relaxation for each subproblem. Computational results with these methods and with a heuristic procedure for the multicommodity flow problem on a problem met in practice are encouraging and suggest that mathematical programming methods can be successfully applied to large-scale problems in delivery systems planning and other problems in logistical system design.

L'objectif de cette thèse est de détecter des éléments défaillants d'Internet. Tout d'abord,nous étudions le déploiement des points d'échange Internet (IXP) en Amérique latine et constatons que certains pays sont en situation d'échec dans leur déploiement IXP, c'est-à-dire aucun IXP du tout, ou bien que l'IXP n'a pas réussi à attirer suffisamment de membres. Deuxièmement, nous étudions BGP, le protocole de routage utilisé sur Internet, et en particulier s'il existe des mensonges BGP, c’est à dire si les routes par lesquelles les paquets circulent réellement sur Internet divergent des chemins que les systèmes autonomes (AS) annoncent. Nous trouvons effectivement des cas où les chemins ne correspondent pas. Enfin, nous étudions comment le trafic circule à l'intérieur des AS et nous nous concentrons sur la détection des détours d'acheminement, c'est-à-dire les cas où les itinéraires d'acheminement ne correspondent pas aux meilleurs itinéraires disponibles, selon le protocole de routage utilisé. Nous mettons ainsi en évidence des détours dans plusieurs AS
The objective of this thesis is to detect hidden broken pieces of the Internet. First, we study the deployment of Internet exchange points (IXPs) in Latin America and find that while some IXPs across the region have managed to proliferate, some countries have failed IXPs, i.e., no IXP at all, or the IXP has not succeeded to attract members. Second, we focus on the border gateway protocol (BGP), the routing protocol used on the Internet, and study whether ASes carry on BGP lies, i.e., if the forwarding routes through which packets actually flow on the Internet diverge from the AS-paths that ASes advertise on BGP. Wefind cases where the paths indeed mismatch. Finally, we study how traffic flows inside ASes and focus on the detection of forwarding detours, i.e., cases in which the forward ingroutes do not match the best available routes, according to the internal gateway protocol(IGP) in use. We reveal such forwarding detours in multiple ASes

Encouraging people to make healthier food choices will make an important contribution to preventing non-communicable diseases. Most groceries purchased by UK households are from supermarkets, potentially making this an important setting where consumers might consider the nutritional quality of foods. While it is possible to purchase healthy food in supermarkets, the retail environment actively promotes the selection of less healthy items. Gaps remain in our understanding about which store based interventions - including providing on-pack nutrition information - can assist shoppers to make healthy food selections. Considerable evidence exists around consumer engagement with nutrition labelling, but there is a paucity of research conducted in real-life contexts. This thesis describes a qualitative study which explored factors which influence decision making at point-of-choice and sought to understand whether and how shoppers use the front of pack nutrition information panel during routine supermarket shopping. The study also investigated whether wearable cameras were useful research tools to understand how shoppers use the front of pack nutrition information panel, compared to a 'Think aloud' method. In this research, participants paid little attention to the front of pack nutrition information as they shopped. Food shopping was characterised as a complex, involved activity with priority given to a range of different issues over health and/or nutrition concerns. Although the front of pack nutrition information panel could offer support to shoppers, this study suggests that its presence is currently overwhelmed by commercially driven factors. Shoppers appear to need specific health or nutrition-related purchasing goals, be sufficiently informed and motivated to spend time attending to the front of pack nutrition information panel. Future interventions should raise awareness of the presence of nutrition information on pack and be clear about how this information can be used in different circumstances to guide consumers towards healthier choices. The study suggests that while data collected via 'Think aloud' or from viewing wearable camera images provides general information about food shopping decisions, eye-tracker technology can provide objective evidence of nutrition information use. Data capture was greatly strengthened by the use of a post-shop interview, where interviews generated specific and important contextual information relating to the use of the front of pack nutrition information panel.

Strong sustainability requires enhanced knowledge and understanding of complex social-ecological interactions, but it also implies a ‘novel’ conceptualization of the relationship between humans and nature, one in which individuals perceive themselves as embedded members of the Biosphere. The aim of this Licentiate thesis is to investigate the validity of a strategy that is centered on designing the urban green infrastructure to nurture such human-nature relationship in children’s attitudes. The research is framed by spatial cognition, conservation psychology, and social-ecological sustainability and it focuses on the validity of this strategy. Hence, the Licentiate analyzes how reoccurring experiences of nature that are situated in the everyday habitat (i.e. nature routines) affect personal human-nature attitudes and how these can be implemented as leverage points to change social-ecological systems using sustainable urbanism. Paper 1 tests the assumed link between the nature routines in Stockholm and preschool children’s development of cognitive and emotional affinity to nature. The results show that nature-rich routines over a period of four years are significantly correlated with the strength of preschooler’s affinity with nature. Paper 2 uses a mixed methods approach to evaluate changes in Connection To Nature (CTN) in 10 years olds who partake in a project of nature conservation. The results of Paper 2 show that there is an evaluative gap between theory and practice in connecting children with nature that impedes the evaluation of how children’s CTN changes over short periods of time and that impedes the creation of an evaluative framework for nature experiences. Paper 3 considers these empirical results in theorizing an approach to sustainable urban design based on social-ecological sustainability that includes CTN. In order to overcome existing limitations Paper 3 presents the concept of cognitive affordances as a theoretical tool to embed cognitive and emotional attitudes towards nature into the design of urban spaces. All combined these papers provide valid evidence that nature routines in cities, especially for children, can be a significant leverage point to enable future sustainable civilizations.

Because of regularity and ease for implementation, ring network is one of popular networks that are interconnection networks with N nodes. Its diameter is very long, N/2 in undirected ring, N-1 in directed ring, and so many improved methods had been proposed. One excellent method is adding some extra links in each node. The method must cost more, however, not only the diameter and the transmission delay can be reduced, also strengthen the reliability and the ability of fault-tolerance. Distributed Loop Networks, or called Chordal Ring with degree of 4, is an interconnection network whose each node added extra two undirected link in a undirected ring. Its hop size is h that means it added one link for message passing directly between two nodes whose distance is h originally. In this paper, we use the Chalamaiah's algorithm for obtaining the results of point-to-point shortest path. Chalamaiah's algorithm is O(h/g+log(h)) in time complexity, where g is GCD(N,h). Moreover, because the degree of each node is fixedly 4, we proposed a point-to-point parallel routing algorithm for obtaining four parallel routing paths under some restricted condition. We can prove that the four paths is node-disjointed. Our parallel routing algorithm is O(h/g+log(h)) in time complexity, and the longest distance of these four parallel routing paths d+8 in worse case, which d is distance from source node to destination node. We further proposed a fault-tolerant algorithm for obtaining one fault-tolerant routing path under some restricted condition and a hypothesis of three faults at a time at most. The fault-tolerant routing algorithm is O(N) in time complexity. The longest distance of the fault-tolerant routing path is d+6 in worse case.

In this work we present a multiagent Fleet Coordination Problem (FCP). In this formulation, agents seek to minimize the fuel consumed to complete all deliveries while maintaining acceptable on-time delivery performance. Individual vehicles must both (i) bid on the rights to deliver a load of goods from origin to destination in a distributed, cooperative auction and (ii) choose the rate of travel between customer locations. We create two populations of adaptive agents, each to address one of these necessary functions. By training each agent population in separate source domains, we use transfer learning to boost initial performance in the target FCP. This boost removes the need for 300 generations of agent training in the target FCP, though the source problem computation time was less than the computation time for 5 generations in the FCP.

Due to the innovation of information technology, the age of networking has come. The quality of some network depends on the topology of the network. The ring network that is easily implemented has become a popular network. The chordal ring with degree of 4 is a variation of ring network. By adding extra two links for each vertex, the reliability and fault-tolerance of the network are enhanced. Furthermore, the transmission delay of the network is reduced. A chordal ring, denoted by CR(N,d), can be represented by a graph G=(V,E) with V={0,1,…,N-1} and E={(u,v)|[v-u]N=1 or d}, where 2≦d<N/2 and [r]N denotes r modulo N. There was a linear time algorithm for finding four independent spanning trees in a chordal ring. Thus, for any two vertices in a chordal ring, four node disjoint paths can be determined immediately through this way. In this thesis, we shall propose an algorithm which also can reconstruct four minimum independent spanning trees and the height of the highest independent spanning trees is shorter than the previous result.

Gastrostomy tube placement is typically a routine surgical procedure with little concern for morbidity and mortality. However, in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), this is not the case. Patients with DMD present a unique clinical dilemma since they often do not require gastrostomy tube placement until their physical status has deteriorated to the point that they have respiratory insufficiency or failure and clinically significant cardiomyopathy. An understanding of the pathophysiology of this disorder and a proactive approach to perioperative management are important to ensure a positive patient outcome.

This may seem self-evident, but the lack of randomized controlled clinical trials to document the usefulness of nutrition in the ICU has been pointed out. The fact that nutrition may be associated with adverse effects has led to some authors to the point where they question the use of nutrition as such in the ICU. However, the majority of intensivists are in favour of providing nutrition for their patients, basically relating to the fact that sooner or later any individual will starve to death without nutrition. The controversy will then be when and how to provide nutrition for the patients. As for many different routines in the ICU, nutrition should also be protocolized, and exceptions from protocol should be rare and well motivated. The nutritional routines should be well known by everybody working in the unit, and everybody should be well informed and hopefully unanimous behind the rationale for the particular routines used....

This chapter traces the history of plantation slavery and sugar cane in Ponce. Before emancipation, libertos performed tasks related to the processing of sugar in the mills. From the point of view of hacendados, libertos were the most knowledgeable labor force and the most familiar with daily routines of sugar production. That placed them at a high position in the hierarchy of labor. As the sugarcane industry became more mechanized, the knowledge and skills of libertos became more indispensable. Consequently, after the abolition of slavery in 1873, hacendados adopted various methods to try to keep libertos working for them. One strategy consisted of offering libertos small plots of land on the grounds of the hacienda. Libertos could farm and grow animals for their family's subsistence in these plots. The ownership of land, albeit small, also gave libertos some degree of autonomy.

From the perspective of contemporary societies ‘childhood’ and ‘household’ are not universal, static categories but rather culturally highly variable dimensions of social life which can be influenced by numerous factors. They appear to be complex social processes, entwined with each other, and are characterized by changing actors. The material traces of these processes in the prehistoric archaeological record are rudimentary and offer no immediate access to ‘childhood’ or ‘household’, but domestic or maintenance activities are relatively well recorded at settlement sites and therefore offer the best vantage point from which to approach the question of social construction and organization, the structuring of everyday life, and the part played by adolescents in these processes. This chapter focuses on the role played by adolescents in the formation of archaeologically tangible activity areas to gain insight into the participation of prehistoric children in the construction of everyday life and daily routines.

End-of-life issues are increasingly central to discussions within medical anthropology, the anthropology of political action, and the study of Buddhist philosophy and practice. This book speaks directly to these important anthropological and existential conversations. Against the backdrop of global population aging and increased attention to care for the elderly, both personal and professional, the book challenges common presumptions about the universal nature of “caring.” The book shows an inseparable link between forms of social organization and forms of care. Unlike most accounts of the quotidian concerns of providing care in a rapidly aging society, the book brings attention to corporeal processes. Under the watchful treatment of the author, care becomes a powerful foil for understanding recent political turmoil and structural change in Thailand, proving embodied practice to be a vital vantage point for phenomenological and political analyses alike.

This second paper on hydrocarbon gas flaring and venting builds on our first, which evaluated the economic and social cost (SCAR) of wasted natural gas. These emissions must be reduced urgently for natural gas to meet its potential as an energy-transition fuel under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and to improve air quality and health. Wide-ranging initiatives and solutions exist already; the selection of the most suitable ones is situation-dependent. We present solutions and actions in a four-point (‘Diamond’) model involving: (1) measurement of chemicals emitted, (2) accountability and transparency of emissions through disclosure and reporting, (3) economic deployment of technologies for (small-scale) gas monetization, and (4) an ‘all-of-government’ approach to regulation and fiscal measures. Combining these actions in an integrated framework can end routine flaring and venting in many oil and gas developments. This is particularly important for low- and middle-income countries: satellite data since 2005 show that 85 per cent of total gas flared is in developing countries. Satellite data in 2017 identified location and amount of natural gas burned for 10,828 individual flares in 94 countries. Particular focus is needed to improve flare quality and capture natural gas from the 1 per cent ‘super-emitter’ flares responsible for 23 per cent of global natural gas flared.

AbstractIn healthcare systems patient engagement and care satisfaction are less than optimal. Different solutions have been proposed to recognise the patient in health care, including person-centred care. The University of Gothenburg Centre for Person-Centred Care (GPCC) steering committee formulated three ‘simple routines’ to initiate, integrate and safeguard person-centred care in daily clinical practice. These routines are: the patient narrative followed by an agreed health plan which is then safeguarded by documentation. Health care professionals need to know how health processes are strengthened in a relationship where patients are accepted as persons with their own will and emotions and in which individual responsibilities and capabilities are highlighted. A person-centred perspective uses ethics as a springboard. Such an ethical view can briefly be formulated by: “To aim for the good life, with and for others in just institutions”. When the starting point is ethics and each person is understood as a unique individual, care actions will never be the same for each patient. By asking for the patients’ understanding of the condition and treatment relative to their lives in general, professionals can understand what health, illness, treatment and care convey to patients and their relatives. The patient narratives are obviously very important in formulating the health plan. Controlled studies have found several benefits from implementing person-centred practices, including improved quality of life, maintained self-efficacy and reduced health costs.

AbstractThe invisible and congested world of underground utilities (UU) is an indispensable mystery to the general public because their existence is invisible until problems happen. Their growth aligns with the continuous development of cities and the ever-increasing demand for energy and quality of life. To satisfy a variety of modern requirements like emergency or routine repair, safe dig and excavation, monitoring, maintenance, and upscaling of the network, two basic tasks are always required. They are mapping and imaging (where?), and diagnosis (how healthy?). This chapter gives a review of the current state of the art of these two core topics, and their levels of expected survey accuracy, and looks forward to future trends of research and development (Sects. 24.1 and 24.2). From the point of view of physics, a large range of survey technologies is central to imaging and diagnosis, having originated from electromagnetic- and acoustic-based near-surface geophysical and nondestructive testing methods. To date, survey technologies have been further extended by multi-disciplinary task forces in various disciplines (Sect. 24.3). First, it involves sending and retrieving mechanical robots to survey the internal confined spaces of utilities using careful system control and seamless communication electronics. Secondly, the captured data and signals of various kinds are positioned, processed, and in the future, pattern-recognized with a database to robustly trace the location and diagnose the conditions of any particular type of utilities. Thirdly, such a pattern-recognized database of various types of defects can be regarded as a learning process through repeated validation in the laboratory, simulation, and ground-truthing in the field. This chapter is concluded by briefly introducing the human-factor or psychological and cognitive biases, which are in most cases neglected in any imaging and diagnostic work (Sect. 24.4). In short, the very challenging nature and large demand for utility imaging and diagnostics have been gradually evolving from the traditional visual inspection to a new era of multi-disciplinary surveying and engineering professions and even towards the psychological part of human–machine interaction.

This article has proposed a modified Kruskal's method to increase the efficiency of a genetic algorithm to determine the path of least distance starting from a central point to solve the open vehicle routing problem. In a vehicle routing problem, vehicles start from a central point and several customers placed in different locations to serve their demands and return to the central point. In the case of the open vehicle routing problem, the vehicles do not go back to the central point after serving the customers. The challenge is to reduce the number of vehicles used and the distance travelled simultaneously. The proposed method applies genetic algorithms to find the set of customers those are covered by a particular vehicle and the authors have applied the proposed modified Kruskal's method for local routing optimization. The results of the new method are analyzed in comparison with some of the evolutionary methods.

Smart Grid is a communication and automatic control capabilities in electric power grid system for improving efficiency, reliability, management, capabilities and security of electric power grid. Routing is important in Smart Grid to send data from one point to another point. Routing in Smart Grid is necessary to search /identify destination point/node for communication and to computer the best available route in the network topology among which the data to be sent during communication. Smart Grid can be a combination of fixed nodes (home appliances, smart meter, control centre, etc.) but the nature of communication between fixed nodes is dynamic due to the switch on/off or the fluctuation in electricity flow. Therefore the fixed nodes can also be disappeared from the network topology in Smart Grid. Existing routing protocols for Smart Grid are based on flooding mechanism. We would like to examine the feasibility of flooding free routing in Smart Grid. Then we will propose a flooding-free routing for Smart.

Mixed-grid optical networks are in a migration state where fixed-grid and flex-grid optical networks coexist. To carry point-to-multipoint (P2MP) services in mixed-grid optical networks, routing and resource allocation (RRA) problems need to be solved. Once the RRA fails, services will be blocked and then influence quality of service. The minimized spectrum for satisfying the bandwidth request of services is called as a frequency block (FB). For a service, the total number of available FBs embodies the spectrum availability on a link. Because the fixed-grid and flex-grid links have different channel spacing, spectrum availability on fixed-grid and flex-grid links needs different evaluation method. We propose a RRA algorithm in mixed-grid optical networks for P2MP services by being aware of spectrum availability. The spectrum availability is evaluated according to fixed-grid and flex-grid constraints. Our proposed algorithm achieves the lower blocking probability (BP) than that of benchmark RRA algorithms according to simulation results.

The technical and ethical issues of these systems proved to be their weak point. Systems that have no central point of control and distribute functions among all users seem better fit for sharing and distributing content. A solution has been proposed in the form of distributed hashtables (DHTs). This article proposes an alternative architecture for content distribution based on a new DHT routing scheme. The proposed architecture is well structured and self-organized in such a way as to be fault-tolerant and highly efficient. It provides users with content distribution and discovery capabilities on top of an overlay network. The novelty of our proposed architecture lies in its routing table which is maintained by each node and is of constant size, as opposed to other algorithms that are proportional to the network’s size (usually O(logN)). All operations in our architecture are of O(logbN) steps (entry, publishing, and lookups) and degrade gracefully as up-to-date information of the routing table decreases due to numerous node failures.

TARA (Topology Aggregating Routing Architecture) is a novel architecture which allows to generate a map of the Internet. TARA allows to maintain and compute a precise topology of the near surrounding and lesser zoomed topologies the more remote they are. In the context of TARA, nodes are identified with “locators” which are derived from longitude/latitude degrees/minutes/seconds. TARA is designed to satisfy advanced traffic engineering such as computing QoS-inferred paths or non congested paths. TARA achieves these goals without requiring an increase of RIBs and FIBs. TARA solves also the issues of dynamic update churn as currently experienced in BGP-based Internet. TARA is also designed with mobility requirements in mind. Indeed, Mobility is supported without requiring dependency on home agents or care-of-address servers. Note, the Time-To-Live mechanism is neither needed nor used in TARA-forwarding. TARA supports various multicast, broadcast, MP2P (multipoint-to-point), anycast and MP2MP (multipoint-to-multipoint) communication schemes. In particular a stateless concept for multicast is outlined; this concept may serve as a pattern for anycast and MP2MP applications. TARA is fully prepared to cope with the IPv4-unicast address depletion issue.

Condition being studied: Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Study designs to be included: Randomised controlled trials which enroll a large number of patients (defined as > 500) and are multinational in origin. Studies included will need to have published Kaplan and Meier curves for the end-points presented in the manuscript.

To achieve higher brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and improve vehicle economy, the new development of dedicated hybrid engine (DHE), adopting the Atkinson or Miller cycle, has been becoming the current development trends. A base 1.5L natural aspiration (NA) engine with deep Atkinson cycle has been developed for dedicated hybrid vehicle application, which can achieve the highest BTE of 41.19%. In order to achieve higher BTE, several potential technologies which are easy for mass production application have been studied progressively, such as, higher compression ratio (CR), optimized exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) pick point, lower EGR temperature, higher EGR rate, higher RON number fuels, heat transfer reduction by polishing valve head, light boost, lower viscosity oil. The results show the combined technology application can achieve the highest engine BTE of 42.59%. This paper provides the studied technical routine and the achieved benefits step by step.
