Inspired by Michel Foucault’s The Order of Things, this book tells a story about epochal change in the modern world. While both books are concerned with how we moderns think about ourselves and our world, this book emphasizes the conceptual links in the ways we think, talk, get things done, conduct ourselves, and run societies. Both tell the story as a succession of epochs or ages separated by great ruptures. First is the Renaissance as the age of similitudes, ending around 1650. In its wake is the classical epoch as the age of tables, succeeded around 1800 by the modern epoch as a time of exponential growth and changing scales. Then follows the modernist age, beginning around 1900, which Foucault failed to identify as such but this book treats as the modern epoch turned inside-out. Last comes Foucault’s “end of man,” c. 1970, a time of rupture and renewal—or not. Despite Foucault’s rhetoric of rupture, modernity has changed within the confines of a “mightie frame” (a turn of phrase borrowed from John Milton). From epoch to epoch, the mighty frame has gained features that continue to function even as they recede from view, all the while fixing the limits of possible knowledge for modern minds and the conditions of rule in the modern world. These two sets of conditions constitute modernity as we know it now, give us clues about what comes next, and point to a plausible ethics for a time of uncertainty, stasis, and, quite possibly, decline.

The ruptures and continuities that the German civil service policy has experienced are impressively illuminated in the contributions by Andreas Wirsching and Frieder Günther on the history of today's Department D "Civil Service" in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Community. The starting point for this account of administrative history is the tradition of the civil service. Since 1949, there has been a continuous, but by no means conflict free development. The range of tasks in the department has been subject to considerable fluctuations over the decades. Ansgar Hollah takes a look at the future goals of service law policy against this background of administrative history. Acute aortic dissections account for the leading and most feared of aortic emergencies. Acute dissections are associated with a dreadful mortality rate; therefore, an accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment are mandatory. The key point of a lifesaving management strategy is the distinction between acute type A dissection, uncomplicated type B dissection, and complicated type B dissection, and those including contained ruptured aorta (severe pleural effusion) and/or malperfusion syndrome (by end-organ ischaemia: paraplegia, intestinal ischaemia, renal insufficiency, limb ischaemia). Type A generally requires urgent surgery; uncomplicated type B dissections are treated conservatively, while complicated type B dissections are currently managed by means of minimally invasive endovascular techniques, eventually associated with a tight surgical time (e.g. in the case of limb ischaemia). Surgical repair of type A dissection consists of the replacement of the ascending aorta. The repair is extended proximally towards the aortic root and valve, and distally towards the aortic arch, in function of the lesions found and the clinical presentation of the patient (haemodynamic status, age, comorbidities). The emergence of endovascular techniques and the contribution of thoracic endovascular aortic repair, with thoracic stent-grafts deployed from the proximal descending aorta to reopen the true lumen and to seal the entry tear in type B dissections, have revolutionized the surgical treatment algorithm in this pathology, and thus the patient’s immediate and medium-term survival. In the same group of acute aortic syndromes, traumatic aortic isthmic ruptures are also life-threatening conditions and account for one of the main causes of death at the time of traumatic accidents. As in the case of complicated type B dissections, the introduction of aortic stent-grafts has changed the outcome of these patients.

This chapter analyzes the quintessential action movie, Point Break (1991), arguing that we experience the film as generic surface. Despite critical efforts to construct the film as a creative play with masculinity or with the action genre, the film remains culturally and politically ambivalent. As is often noted, Point Break repeats the “vessel” of the action genre without rupture, spillage, or slippage. In this sense, Point Break expresses an awareness of its cultural/commercial form by filling out the homosocial trope latent in the action genre's intense male relationships and fetishization of the male body. However, at no point does it seek to exceed, parody, ironize, or reflect upon its genre. The fullness that this produces is a flatness: a surface. This surface is not a negative construction but provides a way to address the network of relations between film, audience, and industry.

Through the Looking Glass examines John Cage’s interactions and collaborations with avant-garde and experimental filmmakers, and in turn seeks out the implications of the audiovisual experience for the overall aesthetic surrounding Cage’s career. As the commercially dominant media form in the 20th century, cinema transformed the way listeners were introduced to and consumed music. Cage’s quest to redefine music, intentionality, and expression reflects the similar transformation of music within the larger audiovisual experience of sound film. This study covers a wide variety of topics, ranging from Cage’s father, John Cage Sr.’s patents in infrared and military technology during World War II, theories of dance aesthetics, film and television theory, visual music, information technology, copyright, and the postwar position of the American Neo-Avant-Garde. This volume examines key moments in Cage’s career in which cinema either informed or transformed his position on the nature of sound, music, expression, and the ontology of the musical artwork. The examples point to moments of rupture within Cage’s own consideration of the musical artwork, pointing to new-found collision points that have a significant and heretofore unacknowledged role in Cage’s notions of the audiovisual experience and the medium-specific ontology of a work of art.

The second chapter covers the main characteristics of transition time in the four countries: Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. After developing the theoretical model on paths of transition, with a focus on social movement participation, the chapter looks at social movements and protest events as turning points during transition, covering in particular the specific movement actors, their organizational models, and their repertoires of action and frames. The chapter focuses on two dimensions: the role of mobilization in the transition period, which implies the analysis of how elites and masses interact, ally, or fight with each other in the process, and the outcome of transitions as continuity versus rupture of the democratic regime vis-à-vis the old one. It concludes by elaborating some hypotheses on how different modes of transition may produce different types and uses of (transition) memories.

This concluding volume in The Oxford History of Historical Writing covers a very small period in comparison with some of its companions: barely two‐thirds of a century. As with the other volumes, the boundary dates are both fluid and imprecise: 1945 is a watershed date for the world in the sense that it marked the end of the Second World War and the division of Europe into a Western and an Eastern bloc. Elsewhere in the world, other dates are more meaningful: for China, 1949 is the critical year; and in much of Africa the decolonization of the 1950s and 1960s marked a significant rupture with past, colonial historiography. Unlike the earlier volumes, our period is also an unfinished one, for though some obvious sub‐periods are broken at points such as the early 1960s, the fall of European communism at the end of the 1980s, and the rapid rise of both globalization and radical Islam during the 1990s, it is difficult to predict, in early 2010 as this introduction is written, just where the story of post‐war historiography will end, or how. Durant la séance extraordinaire du Conseil fédéral du 19 janvier 1914, Giuseppe Motta détaille la situation de crise dans laquelle se trouve le Credito Ticinese de Locarno. Le jour suivant, dans l’immeuble de la Banque Nationale Suisse à Berne, des représentants du gouvernement fédéral et de la BNS ainsi qu’une délégation du gouvernement cantonal et d’instituts bancaires suisses et tessinois cherchent des solutions pour contrecarrer la crise qui, entre-temps, a englouti également la Banca Cantonale Ticinese. La crise bancaire tessinoise de 1914 qui s’inscrit dans une série de faillites bancaires suisses durant les années 1910 constitue un point de rupture dans l’histoire bancaire cantonale. Cet ouvrage présente, dans une première partie, les origines de l’activité bancaire tessinoise au cours du xıxe siècle. Pendant cette période, les banques, créées par des promoteurs locaux, récoltent l’épargne cantonale, dont une large partie provient des remises des émigrants. Elles contribuent à financer la construction des transports régionaux tout en favorisant l’essor du tourisme et de l’économie cantonale. L’Italie devient alors un débouché pour les capitaux tessinois qui cherchent des opportunités et des rendements en dehors du marché local. Des opérations risquées, au Tessin et en Italie constituent l’un des différents facteurs qui conduisent à la crise de 1914 dont l’analyse fait l’objet de la deuxième partie de ce livre. Enfin, la troisième partie présente les transformations structurelles qui assurent au secteur bancaire tessinois un nouveau départ. Celui-ci, marqué par la venue de grands instituts bancaires suisses et étrangers, est soutenu par l’arrivée de capitaux privés italiens dans le contexte d’une intégration renforcée au cadre institutionnel, monétaire et politique de la Confédération. L’analyse de la période entre 1861 et 1939, avec ces différentes phases, permet d’identifier des éléments qui émergent avec force durant la grande expansion que le secteur bancaire tessinois vit après la Seconde Guerre mondiale tout en mettant en relief des caractéristiques que l’on retrouve aujourd’hui.
