Par leur comportement — délimitation interprovinciale du plateau continental, exploitation des ressources du plateau continental uniquement par les provinces de la Nouvelle-Écosse et de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, exclusion du calcul de la péréquation d’une partie ou de la totalité des revenus découlant de ces ressources — le gouvernement fédéral canadien et les gouvernements des provinces de la Nouvelle-Écosse et de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador donnent l’impression que le plateau continental appartient à ces deux provinces. Il n’en est rien. En fait, contrairement à une perception répandue, le plateau continental n’appartient à personne. Le droit international n’accorde pas de souveraineté sur le plateau continental aux États côtiers, mais plutôt des droits souverains sur l’exploration et l’exploitation des ressources naturelles du plateau continental. Ces droits, résultat d’un processus marqué par la recherche de compromis politiques, sont reconnus au gouvernement fédéral. Ainsi, l’argument le plus souvent invoqué afin de légitimer l’exclusion des ressources naturelles non renouvelables du calcul de la péréquation, soit que ces ressources sont la propriété des provinces, ne peut s’appliquer aux ressources du plateau continental. La pratique canadienne concernant l’exploitation des hydrocarbures sur le plateau continental de la côte atlantique est, tant d’un point de vue juridique que politique, d’autant plus surprenante qu’on dit la fédération canadienne cimentée par le principe de la péréquation.

Résumé Le drapeau planté sur le pôle Nord par les Russes à l’été 2007 a ravivé le débat sur l’Arctique, en particulier sur la question de savoir quelles revendications les différents États riverains peuvent faire valoir sur son fond marin soupçonné de regorger de combustibles fossiles. L’objectif de notre contribution est de discuter du cadre juridique applicable à la « répartition » du plateau continental en Arctique et des difficultés particulières liées à la situation géographique. En raison de l’espace restreint, les États riverains doivent y relever non seulement le défi de fixer la limite extérieure de leur plateau continental, mais aussi celui de régler des revendications chevauchantes. Le fait que les États-Unis ne soient pas soumis au même régime juridique que les autres riverains de l’océan Arctique complique encore davantage la situation. Notre étude met un accent particulier sur les enjeux pour le Canada.

Abstract. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) conducted a series of expeditions between 2013 and 2016 that were designed to address the development of monsoon climate systems in Asia and Australia. Significant progress was made in recovering Neogene sections spanning the region from the Arabian Sea to the Sea of Japan and southward to western Australia. High recovery by advanced piston corer (APC) has provided a host of semi-continuous sections that have been used to examine monsoonal evolution. Use of the half-length APC was successful in sampling sand-rich sediment in Indian Ocean submarine fans. The records show that humidity and seasonality developed diachronously across the region, although most regions show drying since the middle Miocene and especially since ∼ 4 Ma, likely linked to global cooling. A transition from C3 to C4 vegetation often accompanied the drying but may be more linked to global cooling. Western Australia and possibly southern China diverge from the general trend in becoming wetter during the late Miocene, with the Australian monsoon being more affected by the Indonesian Throughflow, while the Asian monsoon is tied more to the rising Himalaya in South Asia and to the Tibetan Plateau in East Asia. The monsoon shows sensitivity to orbital forcing, with many regions having a weaker summer monsoon during times of northern hemispheric Glaciation. Stronger monsoons are associated with faster continental erosion but not weathering intensity, which either shows no trend or a decreasing strength since the middle Miocene in Asia. Marine productivity proxies and terrestrial chemical weathering, erosion, and vegetation proxies are often seen to diverge. Future work on the almost unknown Paleogene is needed, as well as the potential of carbonate platforms as archives of paleoceanographic conditions.

Abstract Introduction and geodynamic setting. – Syn-rift exhumation of mantle rocks in a continental breakup zone was highlighted along the present-day west Iberian passive margin [e.g. Boillot et al., 1988, 1995; Whitmarsh et al., 1995, 2001; Beslier et al., 1996; Brun and Beslier, 1996; Boillot and Coulon, 1998; Krawczyk et al., 1996; Girardeau et al., 1998] and along the fossil Tethyan margins [e.g. Froitzheim and Manatschal, 1996; Manatschal and Bernoulli, 1996; Marroni et al., 1998; Müntener et al., 2000; Desmurs et al., 2001]. Along the west Iberian margin, serpentinized peridotite and scarce gabbro and basalt lay directly under the sediments, over a 30 to 130 km-wide transition between the thinned continental crust and the first oceanic crust [Girardeau et al., 1988, 1998; Kornprobst and Tabit, 1988; Boillot et al., 1989; Beslier et al., 1990, 1996; Cornen et al., 1999]. The formation of a wide ocean-continent transition (OCT), mostly controlled by tectonics and associated with an exhumation of deep lithospheric levels, would be an essential stage of continental breakup and a characteristic of magma-poor passive margins. The southwest Australian margin provides an opportunity to test and to generalize the models proposed for the west Iberian margin, as both margins present many analogies. The south Australian margin formed during the Gondwana breakup in the Mesozoic, along a NW-SE oblique extension direction [Willcox and Stagg, 1990]. From north to south, the continental slope is bounded by (1) a magnetic quiet zone (MQZ) where the nature of the basement is ambiguous [Talwani et al., 1979; Tikku and Cande, 1999; Sayers et al., 2001], (2) a zone where the basement shows a rough topography associated with poorly expressed magnetic anomalies [Cande and Mutter, 1982; Veevers et al., 1990; Tikku and Cande, 1999; Sayers et al., 2001], and which is the eastward prolongation of the Diamantina Zone, and (3) an Eocene oceanic domain. The continental breakup zone is believed to be located near or at the southern edge of the MQZ [Cande and Mutter, 1982; Veevers et al., 1990; Sayers et al., 2001]. Breakup is dated at 125 Ma [Stagg and Willcox, 1992], 95 ± 5 Ma [Veevers, 1986] or at 83 Ma [Sayers et al., 2001], and followed by ultra-slow seafloor spreading until the Eocene (43 Ma), and fast spreading afterwards [Weissel and Hayes, 1972; Cande and Mutter, 1982; Veevers et al., 1990; Tikku and Cande, 1999]. The western end of the margin (fig. 1) is starved and bounded in the OCT by basement ridges where peridotite, gabbro and basalt were previously dredged [Nicholls et al., 1981]. Altimetry data [Sandwell and Smith, 1997] show that some of these ridges are continuous over 1500 km along the OCT of the south Australian margin and of the conjugate Antarctic margin. The objectives of the MARGAU/MD110 cruise (May-June 1998; [Royer et al., 1998]; fig. 2) were to define the morpho-structure and the nature and evolution of the basement in the SW Australian OCT. An area of 180 000 km2 was explored with swath bathymetry. Gravimetric data (11382 km) were simultaneously recorded whereas few single channel seismic (1353 km) and magnetic (5387 km) data were obtained due to technical difficulties. Crystalline basement rocks, made of varied and locally well-preserved lithologies, were dredged at 11 sites located on structural highs. Main results. – The bathymetric map unveils three E-W domains (fig. 2). From north to south, they are the continental slope of Australia, prolonged westward by that of the Naturaliste Plateau, a 160 km-wide intermediate flat sedimented area corresponding to the MQZ, and a 100 km-wide zone of rough E-W oriented topography which continues the Diamantina Zone (fig. 3). The first two domains are cut through in three segments by two major fracture zones (FZ), the Leeuwin FZ along the eastern side of the Naturaliste Plateau, and the Naturaliste FZ along its western flank. These NW-SE trending FZ terminate north of the E-W trending fabric of the Diamantina Zone. Accordingly, extension occurred along the NW-SE direction during the formation of the slope and of the MQZ, and then turned to N-S during the formation of the Diamantina Zone. In the Diamantina Zone, the mantle rocks dredged at Site MG-DR02 are mainly lherzolites, rich in pyroxenitic micro-layers, and pyroxenites. They contain spinel rimmed by plagioclase and locally coronas of olivine + plagioclase between opx and spinel, which suggest that they underwent some subsolidus reequilibration in the plagioclase field (fig. 4C). Westward (Site DR09), the mantle rocks are harzburgitic, with lesser pyroxenitic bandings and no plagioclase. The rocks have coarse-grained porphyroclastic textures that are locally overprinted by narrow mylonitic shear bands, and then by a cataclastic deformation, which indicate decreasing temperatures and increasing stresses during their evolution. Basalts were sampled at Sites MG-DR01, −04, −05, and together with gabbros at Sites MG-DR02, -03, -09. They have a transitional composition as shown by their REE patterns, except one sample from site MG-DR-05 which is an alkaline basalt (fig. 5). The gabbros are clearly intrusive in the peridotite at Sites DR02 and -09. They contain olivine and clinopyroxene (cpx) at Site DR02, cpx, plagioclase and hornblende at Site DR03, and cpx and amphibole or orthopyroxene or olivine at Site DR09 (fig. 4D). At that site, a tonalite containing K-feldspar and biotite and alkaline in composition (fig. 5), has also been sampled. All these plutonic rocks display either their primary magmatic textures or secondary porphyroclastic ones that are locally overprinted by mylonitic shear zones (fig. 4E). Retrograde minerals of amphibolite to greenschist facies developed during the deformation. The basalts are clearly intrusive in the gabbros at Site DR03. They are altered and exhibit porphyric textures with abundant plagioclase and plagioclase + olivine phenocrysts at Sites DR03, -04, -08, -10, and have a transitional composition (fig. 5). The nature and evolution of the peridotites and associated gabbros are compatible with an exhumation under a rift zone, on both sides of the Leeuwin FZ. It includes a mylonitic deformation which attests that these rocks underwent a shearing deformation under lithospheric conditions, in probable relation with their exhumation during the early stages of the oceanic opening. The crustal rocks are represented only by intrusive gabbros and by transitional basalts. In the MQZ, the peridotites recovered at Site MG-DR06 are mainly spinel and plagioclase lherzolites (fig. 4B) and a few pyroxenites (fig. 4A) with high temperature porphyroclastic textures. Their discovery indicates that the basement in the MQZ is not exclusively formed of thinned continental crust. Lavas sampled westward of the Leeuwin FZ at Site DR10 have also transitional compositions (fig. 5). On the Australian slope, samples dredged at Site MG-DR07 are continental quartz-bearing rocks (mostly gneisses and rare granites), some showing a high grade paragenesis (upper amphibolite to granulite facies) marked by the presence of K-feldspar, biotite, sillimanite and/or kyanite and garnet, and without primary muscovite (fig. 4G). Some of these rocks underwent an intense mylonitic shear deformation followed by post-tectonic recrystallisation or migmatization. Depending on the age of the high grade evolution (metamorphism and shearing), these rocks document either the syn-rift exhumation of lower continental crust, or the formation of the older Australian craton. On the slope of the Naturaliste Plateau, at Site DR11, rocks of oceanic origin (gabbro-diorites/dolerite/basalt; fig. 4F) were dredged together with acid rocks (gneiss and granites) of probable continental origin, some having a quartz, K-feldspar, biotite and garnet metamorphic paragenesis (fig. 4H). At that site, the transitional basalts intrude the gabbros and associated dolerites. The presence of metamorphic acid rocks indicate that the Naturaliste Plateau is likely a continental fragment that was later intruded by mafic rocks, whose origin and ages of intrusion have to be determined. Discussion and conclusions. – The retrograde tectono-metamorphic evolution of the peridotites recovered in the MQZ, which includes a reequilibration in the plagioclase field (marked by the development of olivine and plagioclase after spinel and pyroxene), is compatible with an exhumation under a rift zone [Girardeau et al., 1988; Kornprobst and Tabit, 1988; Cornen et al., 1999]. By analogy with the Iberia Abyssal Plain, the MQZ could represent a wide OCT where the mantle was exhumed and stretched mostly by amagmatic extension before the initiation of oceanic accretion [Beslier et al., 1996; Boillot and Coulon, 1998] (fig. 6). This hypothesis is supported by the tectonic structures (horsts and grabens) imaged in the seismic data over the MQZ [Boeuf and Doust, 1975]. Accordingly, the limit of the continental crust would be located at the foot of the slope, i.e. 160 km (or 250 km in the NW-SE extension direction) northward of the assumed location of the OCT at the southern edge of the MQZ. The age of the Australia-Antarctic breakup would thus be (1) older than that inferred from the magnetic anomalies (circa 95 Ma [Cande and Mutter, 1982; Veevers, 1986]), which would rather date the onset of oceanic accretion, and (2) older than the age of the breakup unconformity estimated as Santonian (83 Ma), further east, in the Great Australian Bight [Sayers et al., 2001]. The origin of the Naturaliste Plateau, continental or oceanic, is still disputed. The discovery of metamorphic rocks of probable continental origin on the southern flank of the Plateau (Site DR11) shows that it consists at least partially of rocks of the Gondwana continent. All the samples from the Diamantina Zone confirm that its basement is made of a peridotite-gabbro-basalt assemblage. The nature and age of the peridotites and of the associated magmas will help understanding the origin of this domain, which can result either from Neocomian seafloor spreading with further remobilization during the Australia-Antarctic separation, or from post-Neocomian ultra-slow seafloor spreading. Because of the omnipresence of extensive tectonic structures (fig. 3) and of the relatively small proportion of crustal rocks relative to the mantle rocks, we argue that the formation of the Diamantina Zone was mainly controlled by tectonics rather than by magmatic processes. In conclusion, the data collected along the southwest Australian margin during the MARGAU/MD110 survey evidence two major tectonic phases with formation of a wide OCT where abundant mantle rocks, in association with few mafic rocks, outcrop or lay directly beneath the sediments. The evolution of the crystalline rocks is compatible with an exhumation under a rift zone during a phase of magma-poor extension primarily controlled by tectonic processes. The domains where basement highs were sampled seem to be continuous over more than 1500 km eastward along the south Australian margin. Additional evidence on such large-scale structural continuity and on the nature of the associated basement highs may help generalizing the models for continental breakup and formation of non-volcanic passive margins, where oceanic accretion does not immediately follow continental breakup.

L'auteur décrit l'évolution du principe du prolongement naturel, qui reposait d'abord sur la géologie et la morphologie du plateau continental pour se définir maintenant en grande partie par les concepts de distance et de proximité. L'auteur constate aussi que, même si le non-empiètement n'est pas une règle de délimitation mécanique et contraignante, il est devenu un principe équitable qui est rarement ou pour ainsi dire jamais supplanté par des principes équitables concurrents. Par conséquent, la direction de la projection côtière est devenue un aspect capital de toute délimitation. Abstract The continental crust that dominates Earth’s oldest cratons comprises Eoarchaean to Palaeoarchaean (4.0 to 3.2 Ga) felsic intrusive rocks of the tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) series. These are found either within high-grade gneiss terranes, which represent Archaean mid-continental crust, or low-grade granite-greenstone belts, which represent relic Archaean upper continental crust. The Palaeoarchaean East Pilbara Terrane (EPT), Pilbara Craton, Western Australia, and the Barberton Granite-Greenstone Belt (BGGB), Kaapvaal Craton, southern Africa, are two of the best exposed granite-greenstone belts. Their striking geological similarities has led to the postulated existence of Vaalbara, a Neoarchaean-Palaeoproterozoic supercraton. Although their respective TTG domes have been compared in terms of a common petrogenetic origin reflecting a volcanic plateau setting, there are important differences in their age, geochemistry, and isotopic profiles. We present new zircon Hf isotope data from five granite domes of the EPT and compare the geochemical and isotopic record of the Palaeoarchaean TTGs from both cratons. Rare >3.5 Ga EPT evolved rocks have juvenile εHf(t) requiring a chondritic source. In contrast, younger TTG domes developed via 3.5 to 3.4 and 3.3 to 3.2 Ga magmatic supersuites with a greater range of εHf(t) towards more depleted and enriched values, trace element signatures requiring an enriched source, and xenocrystic zircons that reflects a mixed source to the TTGs, which variously assimilates packages of older felsic crust and a more juvenile mafic source. EPT TTG domes are composite and record multiple pulses of magmatism. In comparison, BGGB TTGs are less geochemically enriched than those of the EPT and have different age profiles, hosting coeval magmatic units. Hafnium isotopes suggest a predominantly juvenile source to 3.2 Ga northern Barberton TTGs, limited assimilation of older evolved crust in 3.4 Ga southern Barberton TTGs, but significant assimilation of older (Hadean-Eoarchaean) crust in the ca. 3.6 Ga TTGs of the Ancient Gneiss Complex. The foundation of the EPT is younger than that for the oldest components of the Eastern Kaapvaal. Although the broader prevailing Palaeoarchaean geologic framework in which these two cratons formed may reflect similar a geodynamic regime, the superficial similarities in dome structures and stratigraphy of both cratonic terranes is not reflected in their geochemical and age profiles. Both the similarities and the differences between the crustal histories of the two cratons highlights that they are formed from distinct terranes with different ages and individual evolutionary histories. Vaalbara sensu lato represents typical Palaeoarchaean cratonic crust, not in the sense of a single homogeneous craton, but one as diverse as the continents are today.

Le développement de fermes éoliennes au large des côtes françaises est entré dans une phase active. Cette communication résume brièvement les projets en cours et l’état du marché fin 2018. Pour pallier l’absence de documents normatifs nationaux, le CFMS a mis en place en 2013 un Groupe de Travail ayant pour mission d’élaborer des « Recommandations pour la conception et le dimensionnement des fondations d’éoliennes offshore ». Le cadre du document présenté le 06 décembre à la communauté géotechnique française est rappelé et ses spécificités sont soulignées. Une attention particulière a été portée aux conditions spécifiques des sols et roches rencontrés sur le plateau continental français ainsi qu’au dimensionnement de pieux forés et cimentés qui est peu couvert par les réglementations internationales en usage dans l’industrie offshore. L’après-midi du 06 décembre était consacrée à des communications techniques sur trois projets majeurs de R&D : PISA, ALPACA et SOLCYP+.

AbstractCorrelations between a 1000 year record of the major ions in a 108.83 m ice core from East Rongbuk Glacier (28°01’N, 86°58’E; 6518ma.s.l.) on the northeast slope of Qomolangma (Mount Everest) and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) were examined to investigate possible links between the ice-core records of the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The results show that years with the highest crustal ion concentrations and lowest marine ion concentrations corresponded with a low SOI, and vice versa. Cross wavelet and wavelet coherence analysis between major ion time series and the SOI indicated that there were significant sections with high common power between the major ion time series and the SOI, suggesting a correlation between the ion records of the Qomolangma ice core and ENSO. Further investigation indicated that the higher SOI years corresponded with weaker continental air masses and stronger south Asian monsoons over the southern TP, leading to increased marine ions and decreased continental ions transported to the southern TP. The in-phase surface pressure anomalies of the southern TP and Darwin, Australia, link ENSO and ion transport over the southern TP, and thus suggest a link between aerosol transport over the southern TP and ENSO.

A detailed sedimentological study of the Dupuy Member and the Barrow Group has resulted in a regional model for the deposition of these Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous reservoir sequences in the Barrow Sub-basin. The Dupuy Member is interpreted as a prograding offshore slope sequence of turbidite sandstones and debris flows, which built laterally into the Barrow Sub-basin from along its eastern margin. This slope sequence contains bentonite markers in its upper part. The overlying Barrow Group was deposited by a delta which prograded along the length of the Barrow Sub-basin from the southwest and onlapped the Dupuy Member along the eastern side of the sub-basin. The topsets of the delta are fluvial to shallow marine sandstones, the foresets are offshore claystones, and the bottomsets are submarine mass-flow sandstones. After 8 million years of progradation, the delta was starved of sediment by continental breakup south of the Exmouth Plateau and stopped with its last foreset trending in an east-west arc from Barrow Island across the Exmouth Plateau. The Barrow Group delta was then gradually transgressed by the sea and blanketed by the Muderong Shale. Structural growth of the Barrow Island anticline took place during deltaic deposition and caused anomalous relationships between foresets and bottomsets under the north of Barrow Island. Known hydrocarbon accumulations and common shows in the Dupuy Member and the Barrow Group make these sequences attractive exploration targets.

La plupart des éoliennes offshore sont fondées sur monopieux. L’augmentation constante de la capacité des turbines et l’insuffisance des procédures évoquées dans les documents normatifs, notamment en ce qui concerne la prise en compte des chargements cycliques, posent des défis pour leur dimensionnement. Dans le cas des sites français, la présence de sols et roches carbonatés, dont le comportement est encore mal connu aujourd’hui, rend la tâche encore plus complexe. Le projet SOLCYP+, lancé en 2017 pour une durée de 3 ans, doit permettre de disposer de nouvelles méthodologies fiables et robustes pour le dimensionnement des monopieux de grand diamètre y compris dans le contexte géotechnique du plateau continental français. Cet article présente une description détaillée du projet ANR SOLCYP+. On aborde, tout d’abord, le contexte, la problématique et les objectifs du projet puis, dans un second temps, on décrit plus en détail les quatre principales tâches scientifiques.

Data acquired during a winter (May) cruise of the RV Franklin to the southern Great Barrier Reef indicate that the dynamics of the shelf/slope region are governed by the tides, the poleward-flowing East Australian Current (EAC), and the complex topography. Over the Marion Plateau in water deeper than - 100 m, the EAC appears to drive a slow clockwise circulation. Tides appear to be primarily responsible for shelf/slope currents in the upper layers, with evidence of nutrient uplift from the upper slope to the outer shelf proper in the Capricorn Channel. Elsewhere, the bottom Ekrnan flux of the strongly poleward-flowing EAC enhances the sloping isotherms associated with the longshore geostrophic balance, pumping nutrient-rich waters from depth to the upper continental slope. Generally, shelf waters are cooler than oceanic waters as a consequence of surface heat loss by radiation. A combination of heat loss and evaporation from waters flowing in the shallows of the Great Sandy Strait appears to result in denser 'winter mangrove waters' exporting low-oxygen, high-nutrient waters onto the shelf both north and south of Fraser Island; these subsequently mix with shelf waters and finally flow offshore at - 100 m depth, just above the salinity-maximum layer, causing anomalous nutrient values in the region of Fraser Island.

Le secteur marin situé au large de la péninsule de Manicouagan (700 km2), dont l’écosystème complexe laissait présager une diversité et une productivité importantes, est en voie de devenir une aire marine protégée. La configuration topographique s’apparentant à celle d’un plateau continental et le mélange de l’eau douce des rivières avec les eaux salées de l’estuaire du Saint-Laurent créent des conditions favorables à une diversité de niches écologiques allant des vastes battures de l’estran jusqu’aux eaux profondes à plus de 300 m dans le chenal laurentien. Nous avons caractérisé cette diversité en étudiant le fond marin et les invertébrés benthiques de 2001 à 2008 à l’aide de divers engins d’échantillonnage. Plus de 400 espèces animales ont été recensées. Ces espèces se regroupent en communautés plus ou moins distinctes réparties sur tout le territoire en fonction de la profondeur et de la nature du fond marin. Nous dressons ici un portrait de cette diversité d’espèces benthiques qui habitent l’aire marine de Manicouagan.

The continental margin of West Greenland is similar in many respects to other elevated, passive continental margins (EPCMs) around the world. These margins are characterised by extensive regions of low relief at elevations of 1–2 kilometres above sea level sloping gently inland, with a much steeper, oceanward decline, often termed a 'Great Escarpment', terminating at a coastal plain. Recent studies, based on integration of geological, geomorphological and thermochronological evidence, have shown that the high topography of West Greenland was formed by differential uplift and dissection of an Oligo-Miocene peneplain since the late Miocene, many millions of years after continental break-up between Greenland and North America. In contrast, many studies of other EPCMs have proposed a different style of development in which the high plateaux and the steep, oceanward decline are regarded as a direct result of rifting and continental separation. Some studies assume that the elevated regions have remained high since break-up, with the high topography continuously renewed by isostasy. Others identify the elevated plains as remnants of pre-rift landscapes. Key to understanding the development of the West Greenland margin is a new approach to the study of landforms, stratigraphic landscape analysis, in which the low-relief, high-elevation plateaux at EPCMs are interpreted as uplifted peneplains: low-relief surfaces of large extent, cutting across bedrock of different age and resistance, and originally graded to sea level. Identification of different generations of peneplain (re-exposed and epigene) from regional mapping, combined with geological constraints and thermochronology, allows definition of the evolution leading to the formation of the modern-day topography. This approach is founded particularly on results from the South Swedish Dome, which document former sea levels as base levels for the formation of peneplains. These results support the view that peneplains grade towards base level, and that in the absence of other options (e.g. widespread resistant lithologies), the most likely base level is sea level. This is particularly so at continental margins due to their proximity to the adjacent ocean. Studies in which EPCMs are interpreted as related to rifting or break-up commonly favour histories involving continuous denudation of margins following rifting, and interpretation of thermochronology data in terms of monotonic cooling histories. However, in several regions, including southern Africa, south-east Australia and eastern Brazil, geological constraints demonstrate that such scenarios are inappropriate, and an episodic development involving post-breakup subsidence and burial followed later by uplift and denudation is more realistic. Such development is also indicated by the presence in sedimentary basins adjacent to many EPCMs of major erosional unconformities within the post-breakup sedimentary section which correlate with onshore denudation episodes. The nature of the processes responsible is not yet understood, but it seems likely that plate-scale forces are required in order to explain the regional extent of the effects involved. New geodynamic models are required to explain the episodic development of EPCMs, accommodating post-breakup subsidence and burial as well as subsequent uplift and denudation, long after break-up which created the characteristic, modern-day EPCM landscapes.

La station Concordia (75,1° S ; 123,35° E) est située sur le plateau antarctique oriental à 3 233 mètres d'altitude et à peu près 1 100 km de la côte. Ouverte en 2005, elle est cogérée par la France (Institut Paul-Émile Victor, Ipev) et l'Italie (Programme national antarctique italien, PNRA). Comme les stations américaine Amundsen-Scott du pôle Sud et russe de Vostok à l'intérieur du continent, elle est ouverte toute l'année. Du fait de sa situation exceptionnelle, de nombreux projets scientifiques y sont déployés, notamment sur les sciences de l'univers (météorologie, climatologie, glaciologie, astronomie, géophysique, etc.) et la biologie médicale liée à l'altitude élevée, aux températures extrêmes, au confinement, etc. Ces projets exigent une organisation logistique exceptionnelle au sein du « système Concordia » : 1) la station Robert Guillard sur la côte continentale au voisinage de la station Dumont d'Urville, 2) les raids logistiques terrestres de Robert Guillard à Concordia et 3) Concordia. Une rénovation et des actions pour réduire son empreinte carbone sont planifiées pour les années à venir afin que la station reste une vigie dans les questionnements clés des sciences de l'univers, du climat et des activités biomédicales liées aux vols habités interplanétaires. The Concordia Station (75,1° S ; 123,35° E) is located on the East Antarctic Plateau at an altitude of 3 233 m and approximately 1 100 km from the coast. Opened in 2005, it is co-managed by France (Paul-Émile Victor French Polar Institute, Ipev) and Italy (Italian National Antarctic Program, PNRA). Like the American Amundsen-Scott South Pole and Russian Vostok stations inside the continent, it is open all year round. Due to its exceptional location, numerous scientific projects are deployed there, particularly on the sciences of the universe (meteorology, climatology, glaciology, astronomy, geophysics, etc.) and medical biology linked to high altitude, extreme temperatures, confinement, etc. These projects require an exceptional logistical organization within the "Concordia System": 1) the Robert Guillard station on the continental coast near the Dumont d'Urville station, 2) logistical traverses from Robert Guillard's station to Concordia, and 3) Concordia. A renovation and actions to reduce its carbon footprint are planned for the years to come so that the station remains a lookout in key questions in the sciences of the universe, climate and biomedical activities linked to interplanetary manned flights.

Des dépôts offshores localisés à l’Est de la marge d’Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) ont fait l’objet d’analyse palynologique et palynofaciologique. Elle a porté sur des déblais de forage à partir desquels trente-deux (32) paires de lames minces palynologiques ont été confectionnées. L’objectif était de mettre en évidence les étages du Tertiaire et la limite K-Pg par les palynomorphes stratigraphiques et de déterminer les environnements de dépôt à travers le palynofaciès. Cinq étages ont ainsi été mis en évidence. Ce sont le Maastrichtien supérieur, le Paléocène inferieur, le Paléocène supérieur, l’Eocène inférieur et l’Eocène moyen sur la base des palynomorphes tels que Cerodinium granulostriatum, Andalusiella mauthei, Andalusiella rhomboïdes, Andalusiella polymorpha, Andalusiella gabonensis, Retitricolporites irregularis, Psilatricolporites sp., Laevigatosporites ovatus, Retistephanocolpites williamsii, Apectodinium homomorphum, Adnatosphaeridium multispinosum etc. Trois (3) types de palynofaciès dont le palynofaciès 1 à phytoclastes dominants dans laquelle les spores et les grains de pollen dominent évoquant un environnement littoral au Maastrichtien et au Paléocène, un palynofaciès 2 à phytoclastes et matière organique amorphe dominant à l’Eocène déposé dans un milieu marin marginal et un palynofaciès 3 à matière organique amorphe dominant au paléocène supérieur et à l’Eocène indiquant un milieu de plateau continental interne à externe. Offshore deposits located to the East of the Abidjan margin (Côte d’Ivoire) have been the subject of palynological and palynofaciological analysis. It focused on drill cuttings from which thirty-two (32) pairs of palynological thin sections were made. The objective was to highlight the Tertiary stages and the K-Pg boundary by stratigraphic palynomorphs and to determine the deposition environments by palynofacies. Five stages were thus highlighted. These are the Upper Maastrichtian, the Lower Paleocene, the Upper Paleocene, the Lower Eocene, and the Middle Eocene based on palynomorphs such as Cerodinium granulostriatum, Andalusiella mauthei, Andalusiella rhomboïdes, Andalusiella polymorpha, Andalusiella gabonensis, Retitricolporites irregularis, Psilatricolporites sp.,Laevigatosporites ovatus, Retistephanocolpites williamsii, Apectodinium homomorphum, Adnatosphaeridium multispinosum etc. Three (3) types of palynofacies including palynofacies 1 with dominant phytoclasts in which spores and pollen grains dominate, evoking a coastal environment in the Maastrichtian and Paleocene, a palynofacies 2 with phytoclasts and amorphous organic matter dominant in the Eocene deposited in a marginal marine environment and an amorphous organic dominant palynofacies 3 in the Upper Paleocene and Eocene indicating an inner to outer continental shelf environment.

Abstract We present a method for combining individual indicator results into a comprehensive diagnostic of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities. A conceptual framework for interpreting combined trends in a set of simple indicators is proposed, relying beforehand on qualitative expectations anchored in ecological theory. The initial state of the community is first assessed using published information. Which combinations of trends are acceptable or undesirable is decided, depending on the initial status. The indicators are then calculated from a time-series and their time trends are estimated as the slopes of linear models. Finally, the test results are combined within the predefined framework, providing a diagnostic on the dynamics of fishing impacts on populations and communities. The method is demonstrated for nine coastal and shelf-sea fish communities monitored by French surveys. Most communities were persistently or increasingly impacted by fishing. In addition, climate change seems to have contributed to changes in East Atlantic communities. Cet article propose une méthode utilisant des indicateurs pour élaborer un diagnostic sur les effets de la pêche sur les populations et les peuplements de poissons. Un cadre conceptuel permet d'interpréter les tendances conjointes d'indicateurs à partir de la théorie écologique. L'état initial du peuplement est d'abord évalué sur la base d'informations publiées. En fonction de l'état initial et des objectifs de gestion, les combinaisons des tendances sont qualifiées d'indésirables ou satisfaisantes. Les indicateurs sont ensuite estimés à partir de données de campagnes de pêches scientifiques: abondance et longueur moyenne d'une sélection de populations, nombre, biomasse totale, poids moyen et longueur moyenne dans le peuplement, et la pente du spectre de taille multispécifique. Les tendances temporelles de ces indicateurs sont testées au moyen d'un modèle linéaire, et les résultats des tests sont combinés en un diagnostic final. La méthode est mise en œuvre pour neuf peuplements de poissons côtiers et du plateau continental, suivis par des campagnes françaises. Il en résulte que la plupart de ces peuplements sont affectés par la pêche de manière stationnaire ou croissante. Par ailleurs, les changements climatiques dans l'Atlantique Nord-Est contribuent aussi à des modifications dans les peuplements de poissons de cette région.

RÉSUMÉAux confins du Massif armoricain et du Bassin parisien, le tracé actuel de la Sarthe résulte d'une longue évolution depuis le Pliocène, matérialisée par des témoins alluviaux, plus ou moins bien conservés, modelés en terrasses étagées pour la plupart. Le plus haut niveau, de 40 m d'altitude relative par rapport au lit mineur, engendre un plateau d'inversion de relief alluvial qui atteste d'une paléo-Sarthe affluente du Loir, alors que le cours actuel fait un coude à Malicorne pour se diriger, par méandres, vers Sablé. Les analyses sédimentologique et géomorphologique permettent de différencier les nappes et de reconstituer l'évolution paléogéomorphologique de la vallée. Postérieurement à l'épandage continental prétiglien, le réseau hydrographique commence à s'encaisser tout en s'adaptant à la structure. À l'Eburonien, la paléo-Sarthe accumule, dans la dépression subséquente de la cuesta turonienne, la nappe d'origine périglaciaire qui sera ensuite mise en relief. L'abandon du tracé rectiligne est attribuable au soulèvement de la région de La Chapelle d'Aligné qui a contraint la rivière à se déverser vers le nord-ouest lors du creusement ultérieur. Située légèrement en contrebas, la très haute terrasse qui présente la plus forte pente longitudinale entre Auvours et Sablé, se dédouble uniquement dans la région de Malicorne, en raison de la poursuite du soulèvement de ce secteur durant le remblaiement. Les variations climatiques du Pleistocene moyen et supérieur permettent d'interpréter les phénomènes de migration latérale du cours ainsi que les recoupements de méandres. Les haute, moyenne et basse terrasses adoptent en effet des pentes longitudinales plus faibles, sans déformations notables.

Abstract Global and regional trends in drought for 1950–2000 are analyzed using a soil moisture–based drought index over global terrestrial areas, excluding Greenland and Antarctica. The soil moisture fields are derived from a simulation of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle driven by a hybrid reanalysis–observation forcing dataset. Drought is described in terms of various statistics that summarize drought duration, intensity, and severity. There is an overall small wetting trend in global soil moisture, forced by increasing precipitation, which is weighted by positive soil moisture trends over the Western Hemisphere and especially in North America. Regional variation is nevertheless apparent, and significant drying over West Africa, as driven by decreasing Sahel precipitation, stands out. Elsewhere, Europe appears to have not experienced significant changes in soil moisture, a trait shared by Southeast and southern Asia. Trends in drought duration, intensity, and severity are predominantly decreasing, but statistically significant changes are limited in areal extent, of the order of 1.0%–7.0% globally, depending on the variable and drought threshold, and are generally less than 10% of continental areas. Concurrent changes in drought spatial extent are evident, with a global decreasing trend of between −0.021% and −0.035% yr−1. Regionally, drought spatial extent over Africa has increased and is dominated by large increases over West Africa. Northern and East Asia show positive trends, and central Asia and the Tibetan Plateau show decreasing trends. In South Asia all trends are insignificant. Drought extent over Australia has decreased. Over the Americas, trends are uniformly negative and mostly significant. Within the long-term trends there are considerable interannual and decadal variations in soil moisture and drought characteristics for most regions, which impact the robustness of the trends. Analysis of detrended and smoothed soil moisture time series reveals that the leading modes of variability are associated with sea surface temperatures, primarily in the equatorial Pacific and secondarily in the North Atlantic. Despite the overall wetting trend there is a switch since the 1970s to a drying trend, globally and in many regions, especially in high northern latitudes. This is shown to be caused, in part, by concurrent increasing temperatures. Although drought is driven primarily by variability in precipitation, projected continuation of temperature increases during the twenty-first century indicate the potential for enhanced drought occurrence.

The information reflected in mid-oceanic sedimentary deposits provides critical constraints for reconstructing past global environmental changes. Available data from extant oceans, however, are limited to the Early Jurassic and younger ages, because older oceanic plates have been subducted. This article explains methods for obtaining information on pre-Jurassic mid-oceanic conditions by conducting fieldwork on older orogenic belts exposed on land. The key point is the identification of ancient accretionary complexes (AC), not along currently active margins but within older orogenic belts in continental domains, particularly by recognizing ocean plate stratigraphy (OPS) that contains mid-oceanic strata, as demonstrated by studies of on-land exposed ancient AC in Japan and elsewhere. In this paper, six examples of retrieved mid-oceanic sedimentary data are introduced, in which significant records on the following unique events in the pre-Jurassic world are archived: 1) the extinction-related Paleozoic–Mesozoic boundary superanoxia (based on data from the Jurassic AC in SW Japan); 2) the Permian Kamura cooling event in the mid-Panthalassa (ditto); 3) the Neoproterozoic snowball Earth evidence from the mid-Iapetus Ocean (based on data from the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian AC in Wales, UK); 4) the discovery of enigmatic Ediacaran (Neoproterozoic) microfossils from a mid-oceanic atoll complex (based on data from the Cambrian AC in southern Siberia, Russia); and 5) and 6) Early Archean (3.8 and 3.5 Ga) biogenic signatures in mid-oceanic deep-sea environments (based on data from the Eoarchean AC at Isua in Greenland, and the Paleoarchean one in Pilbara, Western Australia). These results demonstrate the great utility of OPS analysis for understanding pre-Jurassic lost oceans, including the early biological and environmental evolution of the globe. SOMMAIRELes informations enregistrées dans les dépôts sédimentaires médio-océaniques constituent des contraintes logiques qui permettent de reconstituer les changements environnementaux globaux. Cela dit, l’information sur de grands pans de fonds océaniques est limitée aux fonds océaniques Jurassiques précoces et plus jeunes, parce que les fonds océaniques plus anciens ont été subduits. Le présent article explique des méthodes permettant d’obtenir de l’information sur les milieux médio-océaniques pré-jurassiques par des levés de terrain sur des ceintures orogéniques affleurant sur terre. L’idée centrale consiste à circonscrire d’anciens complexes d’accrétion (AC), hors des marges actives actuelles, soit dans les ceintures orogéniques plus anciennes au sein des domaines continentaux, en y repérant des contextes stratigraphiques de plaques océaniques (OPS) qui renferment des strates médio-océaniques, comme ça a été fait lors études d’AC affleurant au Japon et ailleurs. Le présent document décrit six exemples de contextes stratigraphiques de plaques océaniques où on trouve des indices importants des événements pré-jurassiques uniques suivants : 1) l’extinction liée à la super-anoxie de la limite Paléozoïque-Mésozoïque (à partir des données d’un AC jurassique dans le sud-ouest du Japon); 2) l’épisode de refroidissement permien de Kamura du Panthalassa moyen; 3) l’épisode néoprotérozoïque de « Terre boule de neige » conservé par l’océan mi-japétien (selon les données de l’AC néoprotérozoïque-cambrien dans les Wales au Royaume-Uni); 4) la découverte de microfossiles édiacariens (Néoprotérozoïque) d’un complexe d’atolls médio-océaniques (selon les données d’un AC cambrien du sud-est sibérien, Russie); et 5 et 6) des signatures biogéniques de milieux médio-océaniques profonds de l’Archéen précoce (3,8 et 3,5 Ga) (selon les données d’un AC éoarchéen à Isua au Groenland, et d’un AC paléoarchéen à Pilbara, Australie). Ces résultats montrent la grande utilité de l'analyse de la stratigraphie des plaques océaniques pour comprendre les océans pré-Jurassique, de même que l'évolution des débuts de la vie et des milieux de vie sur Terre.

Plate reconstructions indicate that if the Yellowstone plume existed prior to 50 Ma, then it would have been overlain by oceanic lithosphere located to the west of the North American plate (NAP). In the context of models supporting long-lived easterly directed subduction of oceanic lithosphere beneath the NAP, the Yellowstone plume would have been progressively overridden by the NAP continental margin since that time, the effects of which should be apparent in the geological record. The role of this ‘ancestral’ Yellowstone plume and its related buoyant swell in influencing the Late Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the southwestern United States is reviewed in the light of recent field, analytical and geophysical data, constraints provided by more refined paleogeographic constructions, and by insights derived from recent geodynamic modeling of the interaction of a plume and a subduction zone. Geodynamic models suggesting that the ascent of plumes is either stalled or destroyed at subduction zones have focused attention on the role of gaps or tears in the subducted slab that permit the flow of plume material from the lower to the upper plate during subduction. These models imply that the ascent of plumes may be significantly deflected as plume material migrates from the lower to the upper plate, so that the connection between the hot spot track calculated from plate reconstructions and the manifestations of plume activity in the upper plate may be far more diffuse compared to the more precise relationships in the oceanic domain. Other geodynamic models support the hypothesis that subduction of oceanic plateau material beneath the NAP correlates with the generation of a flat slab, which has long been held to have been a defining characteristic of the Laramide orogeny in the western United States, the dominant Late Mesozoic–Early Cenozoic orogenic episode affecting the NAP. Over the last 20 years, a growing body of evidence from a variety of approaches suggests that a plume existed between 70 and 50 Ma within the oceanic realm close to the NAP margin in a similar location and with similar vigour to the modern Yellowstone hot spot. If so, interaction of this plume with the margin would have been preceded by that of its buoyant swell and related oceanic plateau, a scenario which could have generated the flat slab subduction that characterizes the Laramide orogeny. Unless this plume was destroyed by subduction, it would have gone into an incubation period when it was overridden by the North American margin. During this incubation period, plume material could have migrated into the upper plate via slab windows or tears or around the lateral margins of the slab, in a manner consistent with recent laboratory models. The resulting magmatic activity may be located at considerable distance from the calculated hot spot track. The current distribution of plumes and their buoyant swells suggests that their interaction with subduction zones should be common in the geological record. If so, the Late Mesozoic–Cenozoic evolution of western North America may represent a relatively modern analogue for such processes.RÉSUMÉLes reconstitutions de plaques montrent que si le panache de Yellowstone avait existé avant 50 Ma, il aurait été recouvert par la lithosphère océanique située à l'ouest de la plaque nord-américaine (PNA). Dans le contexte de modèles de subduction de longue durée vers l’est de la lithosphère océanique sous la PNA, avec le temps, la marge continentale de la PNA aurait progressivement neutralisé le panache de Yellowstone, et on devrait en voir les effets dans le registre géologique. Le rôle de ce panache de Yellowstone « ancestral » et de son renflement de surface régional associé sur l'évolution tectonique du Sud-ouest des États-Unis au Mésozoïque–Cénozoïque tardif est reconsidéré ici à la lumière de données récentes, de terrain, analytiques et géophysiques, de contraintes découlant de constructions paléogéographiques affinées, et d’idées nouvelles découlant d’une modélisation géodynamique récente de l'interaction d'un panache et d'une zone de subduction. Les modèles géodynamiques suggérant que l'ascension des panaches soient bloquée ou détruite dans les zones de subduction ont attiré l'attention sur le rôle d’hiatus ou de déchirures dans la plaque subduite qui permettent le passage du matériau du panache de la plaque inférieure à la plaque supérieure pendant la subduction. Ces modèles impliquent que le flux ascendant des panaches peut être sensiblement dévié alors que le matériau du panache migre de la plaque inférieure à la plaque supérieure, de sorte que la connexion entre la trace du point chaud calculée à partir des reconstructions de la plaque et les manifestations de l'activité du panache dans la plaque supérieure peut être bien plus diffuse que sa contrepartie du domaine océanique. Le cas échéant, l'interaction de ce panache avec la marge aurait été précédée de celle de son renflement de surface et du plateau océanique connexe, scénario qui aurait pu générer la subduction de la plaque plate qui caractérise l'orogenèse Laramide. À moins que ce panache n'ait été détruit par subduction, il serait entré dans une période d'incubation lorsqu’il a été recouvert par la marge nord-américaine. Si tel est le cas, l'évolution du Mésozoïque–Cénozoïque tardif de l'Amérique du Nord occidentale peut représenter un analogue relativement moderne pour de tels processus.

Incremental accretion of continental fragments from East Gondwana to Eurasia resulted in the growth of Asia and rise of the Tibetan Plateau, yet its detailed evolution remains uncertain. Argoland, a continental fragment that rifted from NW Australia during the Late Jurassic, played a key role in the initial opening of the Indian Ocean and the evolution of eastern Tethys. However, its present identity remains elusive, with East Java-West Sulawesi currently assumed to be the most likely option. To constrain the missing Argoland and its role in India-Asia convergence, we report new detrital zircon data from Sulawesi, Indonesia, and West Burma, Myanmar, and synthesize literature results from relevant regions in Southeast Asia, which (>15,000) reveal age profiles of West Sulawesi, the central Sulawesi metamorphic belt, and southeast Borneo comparable to that of Bird’s Head, New Guinea, whereas age patterns of West Burma and East/West Java are similar to those of NW Australia. Notably, the most dominant age populations in NW Australia are rarely detected in Sulawesi and Borneo. These observations, combined with previous geological records and recent paleomagnetic data, suggest that West Burma is the mysterious Argoland, opposing the currently favored East Java-West Sulawesi model, with East Java and West Sulawesi probably having originated from NW Australia and Bird’s Head, respectively. We estimate an average northward motion of ∼6−8 cm/yr for West Burma, which split from NW Australia to approach the equator during ca. 155−95 Ma, shedding new light on the reconstruction and breakup of northern East Gondwana, progressive building of Southeast Asia, and India-Asia convergence.

Abstract Widely distributed Mid-Neoproterozoic mafic rocks of the Qilian – Qaidam – East Kunlun region record the tectonic evolution of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. This study presents whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology and Hf isotopes for the Xialanuoer gabbros of the central South Qilian Belt (SQB). Zircon laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb dating indicates that the gabbros were emplaced at ca. 738 Ma, indicating they are contemporaneous with mafic magmatism elsewhere in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The gabbros have low SiO2, Cr and Ni contents and Mg# values, are relatively enriched in light rare-earth elements (LREEs) and depleted in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs; e.g. Nb and Ta), have no positive Zr or Hf anomalies and have relatively high Nb/Ta but low Nb/La ratios. These data indicate that the Xialanuoer gabbros formed from calc-alkaline basaltic magmas that were originally generated by the partial melting of an enriched mantle of type-I (EMI-type) enriched region of the lithospheric mantle, underwent little to no crustal contamination prior to their emplacement, and have within-plate basalt geochemical affinities. Combining these data with the presence of widespread contemporaneous continental rift-related magmatism and sedimentation in the North Qilian, Central Qilian, South Qilian, Quanji, North Qaidam and East Kunlun regions suggests that the northeastern Tibetan Plateau underwent Mid-Neoproterozoic continental rifting, which also affected other Rodinian blocks (e.g. Tarim, South China, Australia, North America and Southern Africa).

AbstractThe topography in the Maritime Continent (MC) has significant impact on climate anomalies in the Asian‐Australian monsoons region. In the present study, the Regional Climate Model Version 4.6 (RegCM4.6) is applied for the simulation of climate over the Asian‐Australian monsoon region during the boreal summer. Results demonstrate that the RegcM4.6 is able to well reproduce precipitation, temperature and low‐level and upper‐level circulation patterns over the Asian‐Australian monsoons region. A sensitivity experiment with zero topographic height in the MC region shows that the intensity of western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and Australian cold high both weaken simultaneously, while the cross‐equatorial flows also decline and the East Asian‐Australian monsoons become weaker. Meanwhile, the anomalous cyclonic circulation with significant convergence prevails in lower levels over the western Pacific, leading to more precipitation and higher temperature. In the MC region, there are more precipitation and high temperature in the north while there are less precipitation and low temperature in the south. Temperature increases over a large area from the Yunnan‐Guizhou Plateau to the Loess Plateau but decreases in the southeastern coast of China and eastern India. These results have important implications for better understanding the topographic impact of the MC region on the interaction between the east Asian‐Australian monsoons.

AbstractWhile there have been many paleoclimate studies on the precessional control of climate, typically only the orbital phase where perihelion occurs close to the solstices has received attention. Here, we explore how precession affects the seasonal evolution of the Asian summer monsoon in the transitional seasons of boreal spring and autumn. With perihelion occurring in boreal spring, the Hadley circulation weakens over the northern Indian Ocean, linked to precession-enhanced sensible heating over the Tibetan Plateau. There is an early northward migration of the midlatitude westerly jet stream, and the advancement of the pre-monsoon along the Asian–Australian land bridge. The pre-monsoon response to precession may have had a major role in the early part of the last deglaciation, when perihelion last occurred during boreal spring. A weak continental summer monsoon and autumn aphelion during the early part of the last deglaciation led to a weak Pacific high over the east of coastal East Asia, allowing for a vigorous oceanic western North Pacific monsoon in the late summer. Additionally, the seasonal expansion of oceanic monsoon trough could shed light on the quasi-stationarity of the oceanic monsoon during a precessional cycle.

Grace aux nouveaux enjeux géoéconomiques (hydrocarbures et ressources halieutiques) et à la prégnance des contraintes géostratégiques pollution et piraterie maritimes), le golfe de Guinée, entendu comme le secteur maritime de l’Atlantique du centre, comme le seul espace géopolitique pertinent devant regrouper tous les Etats du pourtour de l’océan Atlantique. Le bassin Atlantique offre l‘intérêt de se situer, à la fois, comme une zone de projection vers la mer et une porte d’entrée vers l’Hinterland. Plus qu’une simple frontière, cette région hydrologique est davantage une zone de contact entre ces deux espaces. Tous ces atouts géographiques et ces enjeux géopolitiques inscrivent finalement le bassin de l’Atlantique au cœur des batailles de positionnement et des tractations politico-diplomatiques menées par des Etats côtiers et des acteurs non-étatiques. Stratigraphic units, characterized by distinct rock types, ages and depositional environments, are described from one of the most geologically chaotic terranes on the present-day western Australian continental margin. The Matebian Overthrust Terrane in Timor-Leste has components interpreted to have been deposited (1) on the Early Jurassic northern margin of eastern Gondwana; (2) off the Late Cretaceous southern Sundaland margin of south-east Asia, probably in the vicinity of east Java–south Sulawesi; and (3) in an Eocene to earliest Miocene orogenic belt along the southern Sundaland margin. By the Early Miocene, the units were stitched together in a coherent terrane as evidenced by olistoliths, debris-slide conglomerates and detrital material in turbidites. During the Late Miocene the terrane rifted from the Sundaland margin, probably during the opening of the Banda Sea, and collided with Timor–Scott Plateau at the Australian continental margin, becoming incorporated in the Timor–Seram orogenic belt along this margin. The following stratigraphic units are described from the terrane: Perdido Limestone (Early Jurassic, Sinemurian–Pliensbachian, ~ 199–184 Ma; neritic deposit); Sagadati Argillite (new unit; Early Jurassic, Sinemurian–Pliensbachian, ~ 199–184 Ma; lower bathyal deposit adjacent continent margin); Tibalari Pelagite (new unit; early Late Cretaceous, mainly Cenomanian–Turonian, ~ 100–90 Ma; lower bathyal oceanic deposit); Lakamutu Mudstone (new unit; Middle Eocene, ~ 45–43 Ma; abyssal oceanic deposit near continent margin); Liloli Calcarenite (new unit; Middle Eocene; bathyal slope deposit adjacent continent margin); probable Barique Volcanics (probably Middle Eocene; submarine volcanics); Afalari Pelagite (new unit; mid Oligocene, ~ 30–28 Ma; lower bathyal oceanic deposit); Booi Limestone (Late Oligocene to earliest Miocene, ~ 27–20 Ma, neritic deposit); Atelari Mudstone (new unit; Late Oligocene to earliest Miocene, ~ 26–21 Ma, upper bathyal deposit). L’objectif était de mettre en évidence les étages du Tertiaire et la limite K-Pg par les palynomorphes stratigraphiques et de déterminer les environnements de dépôt à travers le palynofaciès. Cinq étages ont ainsi été mis en évidence. Ce sont le Maastrichtien supérieur, le Paléocène inferieur, le Paléocène supérieur, l’Eocène inférieur et l’Eocène moyen sur la base des palynomorphes tels que Cerodinium granulostriatum, Andalusiella mauthei, Andalusiella rhomboïdes, Andalusiella polymorpha, Andalusiella gabonensis, Retitricolporites irregularis, Psilatricolporites sp., Laevigatosporites ovatus, Retistephanocolpites williamsii, Apectodinium homomorphum, Adnatosphaeridium multispinosum etc. Trois (3) types de palynofaciès dont le palynofaciès 1 à phytoclastes dominants dans laquelle les spores et les grains de pollen dominent évoquant un environnement littoral au Maastrichtien et au Paléocène, un palynofaciès 2 à phytoclastes et matière organique amorphe dominant à l’Eocène déposé dans un milieu marin marginal et un palynofaciès 3 à matière organique amorphe dominant au paléocène supérieur et à l’Eocène indiquant un milieu de plateau continental interne à externe.

Résumé Les résultats d’un programme de recherche écosystémique, mené dans le Parc Marin Saguenay–Saint-Laurent, sont résumés pour comprendre les processus fondamentaux responsables de l’existence de ce site traditionnel d’alimentation des baleines, découvert par les baleiniers basques il y a 450 ans. Un ensemble de processus pérennes maintient les proies des baleines agrégées à la tête du chenal principal du plateau continental de l’est du Canada. Quel est-il ? Cette région est le site de la plus riche agrégation de krill documentée à ce jour pour le nord-ouest Atlantique. Les mécanismes responsables sont le pompage, la rétention et la concentration du krill adulte provenant du golfe du Saint‑Laurent par l’énergique circulation estuarienne du Saint‑Laurent. Les courants de marée remontant le long des talus des chenaux et des bancs sous-marins interagissent avec le comportement vertical du krill adulte et le concentrent. Ce processus est plus intense à la tête des chenaux où l’« upwelling » d’origine tidale (remontée d’eau profonde due à la marée) est amplifié. Il est rehaussé par endroits par l’« upwelling » côtier dû au vent. La circulation moyenne transporte les riches essaims de krill le long des rebords des bassins. À l’embouchure de l’estuaire, le krill, concentré à la marge de la grande gyre cyclonique (tourbillon anti-horaire) d’Anticosti, est injecté dans l’estuaire maritime du côté nord, lorsque les conditions de circulation sont favorables. L’étroit courant de talus remontant l’estuaire l’emporte alors vers la zone d’agrégation de krill du parc marin. Des poissons pélagiques fourragers, tel le capelan, se concentrent aussi à la tête du chenal et à l’entrée du fjord sous l’action de l’« upwelling », des courants de marée et des fronts, qui aussi concentrent et augmentent la disponibilité de leurs proies. Ils contribuent à nourrir les baleines et les oiseaux marins. Des caractéristiques océanographiques spéciales, rarement réunies ailleurs, se combinent dans le parc marin pour créer ce site d’alimentation des baleines. Les pressions anthropiques et les changements climatiques sont les principales menaces à sa préservation pour les prochains siècles.

Il est désormais commun de le dire : les faits humains sont de plus en plus étroitement liés à l’espace maritime. Les exemples seraient légion, citons parmi les plus significatifs et contemporains: les revendications coutumières dont la mer fait l’objet parmi les communautés autochtones, en Australie notamment; les enjeux économiques et les confrontations nouvelles autour de l’appropriation des ressources marines, en Arctique ; les réseaux d’Aires Marines Protégées de plus en plus étendus, qui forment le projet d’une mer dont la responsabilité et l’administration pourraient être globales ; la submersion inexorable des îles Salomon, ou Maldives et la nécessité, pour ses actuels habitants, de fonder des utopies maritimes dans des États voisins ; et, pouvons-nous faire l’économie de cette tragique actualité : les itinéraires désespérés qu’engagent sur la Méditerranée des hommes acculés. Toute anthropologie sera-t-elle donc amenée à devenir « maritime » ? Force est de constater que cette mer, qui constitue aujourd’hui un élément de réflexion latent et apparemment incontournable, a tardé à investir le champ anthropologique. C’est bien en effet par sa marginalité dans le paysage intellectuel que s’est caractérisée l’« anthropologie maritime », définie comme telle au tournant des années 1970-1980 en Amérique du Nord et en Europe. L’étrangeté et l’ambivalence associées à la mer dans la pensée occidentale expliquent sans doute en partie cette curiosité tardive et, plus encore peut-être, la méthodologie mise en œuvre par ce « sous-champ disciplinaire » pour l’appréhender. Pour rendre compte de la relation de l’homme à un espace « irrémédiablement sauvage » (Corbin 2010 :75), deux approches ont en effet été privilégiées : une lecture matérialiste, absorbant dans un registre technique la teneur d’une interaction principalement fondée sur la "conquête" (Michelet 1935) et la "lutte" (Hugo 2002); et, une lecture continentale, impliquant le rapprochement sémantique et épistémologique avec un milieu terrestre plus familier. Les textes programmatiques qui définissent l’anthropologie maritime ne manquent pas de faire apparaître la permanence de ces entrées, en y incluant toutefois de discrètes variations. Dans le cas de la lecture continentale par exemple, c’est avec des interprétations divergentes que le référent terrestre est mobilisé, suivant que les auteurs privilégient une continuité terre-mer, ou qu’ils instaurent, a contrario, une césure entre un milieu et l’autre. Pour les tenants d’une continuité, la mer, inscrite dans le prolongement d’un espace continental, en poursuit les structures sociales et économiques. C’est en projetant sur elle et les marins les logiques du monde paysan (Breton 1981 : 8), en rapprochant les activités de pêche de celles de la chasse (Barnes 1996), en accusant un monisme épistémologique pour faire des perceptions associées à la mer des répliques de schèmes continentaux, qu’ils entendent penser cet espace. Pour les autres, l’appréhension de la mer implique, au contraire, de mettre en évidence sa radicale étrangeté. Ce milieu, jugé « hostile, « incertain » et « dangereux » (Poggie 1980), façonne des sociétés dont les structures sociales, techniques, économiques ou psychiques, appellent un traitement particulier et commun.

Ictiofauna demersal numa região de Plataforma Continental do Sul do Brasil, submetida à pesca camaroeira. A ictiofauna de uma região de Plataforma Continental do litoral do Paraná foi analisada objetivando comparar os atributos das espécies cujos indivíduos estão submetidos à pesca camaroeira com arrasto de fundo (profundidade 10m), com aqueles das espécies cujos indivíduos situam-se em área adjacente, sem atividade pesqueira (profundidade 15m). O material foi coletado através de arrasto de fundo, em 1999 e 2000, analisando-se sua composição, abundância e atividade reprodutiva. Entre as sessenta e duas espécies de peixes, 30 foram comuns às duas áreas, 24 exclusivas da área 10m e oito exclusivas da área 15m. A pesca camaroeira e seu conseqüente bycatch ocorrem numa área de Plataforma onde os atributos da ictiofauna são diferentes daqueles da área próxima. Incluem maior número de espécies exclusivas, maiores efetivos numéricos, maior atividade reprodutiva e espécies mais apreciadas para consumo. Os grupos cujos indivíduos são de bom valor comercial quando adultos (Clupeiformes e Sciaenidae) têm abundâncias mais regulares ao longo do tempo na área 10m que na área 15m; nesta, grupos sem interesse comercial (Haemulidae, Tetraodontiformes) predominam. Conclui-se que a assembléia de peixes da área 15m, onde pesca não é realizada, não dispõe de atributos biológicos (composição, atividade reprodutiva e outros) que pudessem neutralizar os efeitos impactantes causados pelo bycatch da pesca camaroeira na área adjacente. ABSTRACT A region of the Continental Shelf of Southern Brazil, isobaths 10 and 15 meters, was studied aiming to compare the attributes of the fish assemblage exposed to the shrimp trawl fisheries, to those of a fish assemblage from a contiguous deeper area that is not exposed to this fishing modality. Individuals were collected with bottom trawl net along 1999 and 2000, and its composition, abundance, size and reproductive activity were analyzed. Of the sixtytwo fish species, 30 were common to both areas, while 24 were exclusive to the fishing area and eight were exclusive to the nonfishing area. The shrimp trawl fisheries and the bycatch associated to it occur in a shelf area having very distinctive ichthyofaunistic attributes when compared to those found in the area where this type of fishing does not occur. These attributes include a high number of species exclusive to the fishing area, the formation of larger populational aggregates, a higher intensity of reproductive activity, a larger permanence of species with potential economic value, and a smaller mean individual size. There is evidence that many species do not reside in the study region, but are present because of their migratory behavior. Species whose individuals are valued commercially when adults (mainly Clupeiformes and Sciaenidae) present more uniform abundance values through time in the fishing area than in the contiguous area, where many important groups with no commercial interest (Haemulidae, Tetraodontiformes) were recorded. It is estimated that the ichthyofauna of the area presenting shrimp trawl fisheries is exposed to a disturbance that cannot be counterbalanced by the absence of this fishery activity in its contiguous area. RÉSUMÉ Ichtyofaune démersale dans une région du plateau continental sud-brésilien soumise à la pêche aux crévettes. L’ichtyofaune d’une région du plateau continental sud-brésilien a été analisée envisageant la comparaison entre les attributs de l’assemblage soumis à la pêche chalutière aux crévettes, profondeur 10m, et ceux de l’assemblage d’une aire adjacente, profondeur 15m, où il n’y a pas ce type de pêche. Le matériel a été prélevé en utilisant le chalut de fond, années 1999 et 2000, et leur composition, abondance et activité reproductive ont été évaluées. Parmi les soissante-deux espèces de poissons, 30 ont été communes aux deux aires, 24 ont été exclusives de l’aire 10m, et huit de l’aire 15m. La pêche aux crevettes et son conséquent bycatch de poissons ont lieu dans une aire du plateau portant des attributs ichtyofaunistiques différents de ceux de l’aire voisine, surtout des valeurs plus importantes d’espèces exclusives, d’effectif numérique, d’activité reproductive et d’espèces ayant un interêt commercial. Les espèces ayant une bonne valeur commerciale quand les individus sont adultes (Clupeiformes et Sciaenidae) ont des abondances plus régulières au cours du temps à 10m qu’à 15m, où quelques groups sans interêt commercial (Haemulidae, Tetraodontiformes) sont plus abondants. Il est proposé que l’absence de pêche au chalut dans l’aire 15m ne peut pas réduire les impacts que cette activité cause dans son aire voisine.

Ophiolites are complex assemblages of ultramafic and mafic igneous rocks that are now widely considered to be pieces of ancient oceanic crust that were emplaced on to the continents courtesy of global plate tectonics. However, most examples were originally considered parts of enormous layered mafic intrusions and so were interpreted in that light. The new understanding of ophiolites in the late 1960s and early 1970s was a crucial part of the global Earth Science revolution, and they are now central to all plate tectonic models developed for ancient orogenic belts. Although their equivalence to oceanic crust is now well established, many ophiolites may not be ‘typical’ examples of such, and not all examples are identical. Most ophiolites likely formed in subduction-influenced environments rather than at mid-ocean ridges. Ophiolites remain important foci for research in the 21st century, and many questions remain about their environments of formation and especially their mechanisms of emplacement onto the continents. Although it was not the first to be seen as a relic of a vanished ocean, the Bay of Islands Igneous Complex in western Newfoundland is one of the best preserved and most easily accessible ophiolites in the world. In the late 20th century, research work in this area proved highly influential in understanding the oceanic crust, and in unravelling the diachronous events involved in the progressive destruction of an ancient stable continental margin as arcs and microcontinental blocks were accreted along it. Parts of the Tablelands Ophiolite lie within Gros Morne National Park, which is a UNESCO world heritage site because of its importance to our understanding of global tectonics. The wider region around the park also includes the Cabox Aspiring Geopark Project, now also in the process of seeking recognition through UNESCO. This article provides background information on ophiolites and the development of our ideas about them, and links this material to four self-guided field excursions that allow examination of many classic features. These excursions range from a collection of roadside outcrops, to some relatively easy hiking excursions on official National Park trails, and eventually to a more challenging off-trail hike that ascends to the summit plateau of the Tablelands to visit rare exposures of the Moho (the Mohorovičić Discontinuity, i.e. the lower boundary of the Earth’s crust) and the underlying upper mantle rocks. Collectively, the field stops should allow geologically-minded visitors to experience some amazing geology in a spectacular and sometimes surreal landscape. RÉSUMÉLes ophiolites sont des assemblages complexes de roches ignées ultramafiques et mafiques qui sont maintenant généralement considérées comme des fragments de croûte océanique ancienne qui ont été charriés sur les continents grâce à la tectoniqueglobale des plaques. Cependant, la plupart des exemples étaient à l'origine considérés comme faisant partie de vastes intrusions mafiques stratifiées et ont donc été interprétés dans ce contexte. La nouvelle compréhension des ophiolites à la fin des années 60 et au début des années 70 a été un élément crucial de la révolution des sciences de la Terre. Les ophiolites sont désormais au coeur de tous les modèles tectoniques des plaques développés pour les anciennes ceintures orogéniques. Bien que leur équivalence avec la croute océanique soit maintenant bien établie, de nombreuses ophiolites peuvent ne pas en être des exemples « typiques », et tous les exemples ne sont pas identiques. La plupart des ophiolites se sont probablement formées dans des environnements influences par la subduction plutôt qu’au niveau des dorsalis océaniques. Les ophiolites restent un thème de recherché important au XXIe siècle et de nombreuses questions subsistent quant à leurs environnements de formation et notamment à leurs mécanismes de mise en place sur les continents. Bien qu'il n’ait pas été le premier à être identifié comme un vestige d'un océan disparu, le complexe igné de la baie des Îles, dans l'ouest de Terre-Neuve, fait partie des ophiolites les mieux conservées et les plus facilement accessibles au monde. À la fin du XXe siècle, les travaux de recherche dans ce domaine ont joué un rôle déterminant dans la comprehension de la croûte océanique et dans la compréhension des événements diachrones impliqués dans la destruction progressive d'une ancienne marge continentale stable au fur et à mesure de l'accrétion d'arcs et de blocs microcontinentaux. Une partie des Tablelands Ophiolite se trouve dans le parc national du Gros-Morne, site classé au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en raison de son importance pour notre compréhension de la tectonique globale. La région plus large autour du parc comprend également le projet Cabox Aspiring Geopark, qui est également à la recherche d’une reconnaissance dans le cadre de l’UNESCO. Cet article fournit des informations de base sur les ophiolites et le développement de nos idées à leur sujet, et relie ce matériel à quatre excursions autoguidées qui permettent d'examiner de nombreuses caractéristiques classiques. Ces excursions vont d’une collection de visites d’affleurements au bord de la route, à des randonnées relativement faciles sur les sentiers officiels du parc national, et finalement à une randonnée plus difficile hors-piste menant au plateau sommital des Tablelands pour visiter de rares affleurement du Moho (la discontinuité de Mohorovičić, c’est-à-dire la limite inférieure de la croûte terrestre) et des roches du manteau supérieur sousjacentes.
