Severe plastic deformation of metals leads to changes in microstructure, which in turn are responsible for unusual bulk properties. There are two (interrelated) processes leading to change of microstructure: 1) the production of a very high number of dislocations, leading to a high dislocation density, 2) the “fragmentation” of the original crystal grains into much smaller structural elements leading to what is sometimes called “nanocrystalline” material. Under continued strain neither of these two processes will continue indefinitely. Instead, the microstructure will reach a steady state. Under certain conditions its development may even be reserved. This indicates the operation of restoration mechanisms such as dynamic recovery and recrystallisation. The actual state of art will be discussed on the basis of current experiments.

AbstractValue is defined as the worth, utility, or importance something holds. It can be derived from a variety of goods and services and is relative to a given industry or population. This article will discuss elements of plastic surgery that hold value as to how it pertains to the key players in a medical transaction. It will also discuss strategies for identifying and generating value. Roles of the different members in a plastic surgery transaction were analyzed, specifically the patient, the surgeon, and the facility. Different factors that generated value for all parties were identified throughout the literature. Factors identified that created value included the following: the surgeon's knowledge, experience, and decision-making ability; and technical skill/speed, restoration of life, restoration of form and function, restoration of psychological deficit, instant surgical results, convenience of access, outcomes, cost accounting, research, compassion, and bedside manner. Plastic surgeons can gear their practice to provide the system and their patients with services that hold value. We present several factors that can generate value for the patient, surgeon, and hospital system.

The aim of the study is to create a theoretical basis that allows to calculate the forces of hot plastic deformation of the piston pin. One of the promising methods of restoring the piston fingers of the connecting rod - piston group of internal combustion engines is the method of hot plastic deformation. The process of restoring the piston fingers by hot plastic deformation can increase their strength and, in particular, fatigue strength. When developing the technological process of restoration of piston fingers using the method of hot plastic deformation by distributing it with a punch in the stamp, there is a problem of determining the effort required for high-quality deformation process. The article offers the theoretical basis for calculating the deformation forces. The result was obtained on the basis of the selected scheme of formation. As a result of the calculations we can conclude: 1. Restoration of the piston finger by hot plastic deformation allows to restore 95% of the fingers which have arrived in repair. 2. Piston fingers restored by hot plastic deformation in their technical parameters are not inferior to the new, achieved - "healing" of microcracks, creating internal compressive stresses, and grinding grain, which strengthens the material of the piston finger, in particular increasing its fatigue strength by 15… 20% . 3. As a result of theoretical studies of the resistance of the metal to plastic deformation were obtained dependences of the specific force on the punch depending on the ratio of the diameters of the workpiece.

The aim of this study was to analyze the load distribution of interim restorations using healing cap during immediate loading implant treatment in vitro. A total of 29 models with interim restorations which were fabricated with healing cap were selected. The pull-out strength was measured with a used healing cap and new healing cap. The compressive strength and sinking distance were also measured. The pull-out strength of interim restoration showed lower value (max. 29.8 N) compared to the natural bite force. The sinking amounts were larger than normal tooth sinking. The sinking amounts of interim restorations fabricated on a healing cap were roughly 3 times (0.3–0.5 mm under 450 N) those of normal teeth. The interim restoration on plastic healing cap would be useful for immediate loading implant treatment.

Oyster reef restoration efforts increasingly consider not only oyster recruitment, but also the recovery of ecological functions and the prevention of deploying harmful plastics. This study investigated the efficacy of a biodegradable plastic-alternative, BESE-elements®, in supporting oyster reef restoration in east-central Florida (USA) with consideration for how this material also influences biogeochemistry. Four experiments (two laboratory, two field-based) were conducted to evaluate the ability of BESE to serve as a microbial substrate, release nutrients, support oyster recruitment and the development of sediment biogeochemical properties on restored reefs, and degrade under field conditions. The results indicated BESE is as successful as traditional plastic in supporting initial reef development. In the lab, BESE accelerated short-term (10-day) sediment respiration rates 14-fold and released dissolved organic carbon, soluble reactive phosphorus, and nitrate to the surface water (71,156, 1980, and 87% increase, respectively) relative to without BESE, but these effects did not translate into measurable changes in reef sediment nutrient pools under field conditions. BESE lost 7–12% mass in the first year, resulting in a half-life of 4.4–6.7 years. Restoration practitioners should evaluate the biogeochemical properties of biodegradable materials prior to large-scale deployment and consider the fate of the restoration effort once the material degrades.

Abstract Hair restoration has emerged as a subspecialty of aesthetic plastic surgery practiced by a wide range of doctors including plastic surgeons, general surgeons, dermatologists, and even general practitioners. As a current trend, most doctors practice “Ultrarefined follicular unit hair transplantation” in which the entire procedure is done precisely with minimal donor scar. In selected cases, Mega or even Giga sessions are now done with natural appearance and almost undetectable scar, in a single session with good density. This article is an attempt to review the history of hair restoration surgery, describe a novel technique currently practiced in our center, and summarize possible future innovations.

Abstract The restoration effort to clean up the river, known as “Citarum Harum” requires monitoring to estimate both the composition and the volumes of plastic pollution. The objective of the monitoring is to obtain a scientific baseline of marine plastics from Citarum River as a function of other influencing aspects. A static net trawl (60 m x 10 m, mesh size 2.5 cm, and about 1 meter submerged) was installed under the New Muara Gembong Bridge for eight consecutive days in March and April 2021 or during the rainy season. The trapped debris was collected manually into boxes using two boats and simple tools. After the drying, weighting, classification processes and by excluding natural organics (leaves/branches), plastics contributed as the most dominant for both abundance (83%) and weight (31%) followed by textiles, hazardous materials, construction materials and rubbers. The hydrological conditions as well as the tides were also observed to be one of dominant parameters. The quantification of macro-plastic litter transport from River Citarum into the Java Sea is also an aim for the ASEANO project (ASEAN – Norway cooperation project on local capacity building for reducing plastic pollution in the ASEAN region).

Reduction in production and phase-out of a significant range of peat machines leads to a lack of spare parts for the equipment on the balance sheet of peat enterprises. Partial compensation for a shortcoming of spare parts is possible due to the restoration of worn parts. The article describes a new method of restoring a worn surface by plastic deformation, which implements the effect of increased plasticity of a material. The effect ensures the qualitative repair of friction units made of plastic varieties. The proposed restoring method allows obtaining the necessary surface parameters without complex technological equipment and provides improvement of mechanical characteristics and acquisition of new tribotechnical properties. There are the results of complex studies of the deformation process under superimposed hydrostatic pressure.

The restoration cost for agricultural machinery parts systematically influences on that of agricultural production. Hence the need to find the most effective and less expensive methods for repairing these parts. The bushes of the connecting rods of internal combustion engines are among the parts that wear out quickly and are made with expensive and deficient bronzes. The technical equipment used consists a worn out bushes of bronze treated by various methods, a vibro-rolling device, deformation software, a profilograph-profilometer, a microscope, and a machine of friction. In order to analyze the performance of the bushes of the connecting rods of internal combustion engines resulting from various treatments, the following parameters were determined: the height of the micro-relief elements, the absorption and the surface oil retention force, the optimum support surface, the wear and the wear intensity, the temperature of the friction area and the duration of the running-in period. The vibro-rolling followed by the deformation by broaching increases oil retention force from 1.8 to 2 times, and the wear resistance from 1.86 to 3.45 times as compared with the traditional technology. This new technology can be used for the restoration of the bushes of the connecting rods of internal combustion engines.

The article provides the analysis of the causes of damage in the masonry of historical buildings after their restoration. It has been established that the use of mortars of an increased grade and, accordingly, stiffness during repairs of historical masonry leads to an increase in tensile stresses in bricks under temperature and humidity effects. The reasoning behind the use of such mortars is to increase the strength and durability of the restored areas of historical masonry. The results of numerical simulation show that the masonry mortar must be sufficiently strong in compression and, at the same time, sufficiently plastic. It is shown that the use of hard mortars based on a cement binder, compared with plastic mortars based on a lime binder, on average doubles the value of normal tensile stresses at a temperature difference ∆Т=+100С.. This effect is much higher when stones swell due to their moisture. According to the results, for restoration work with brickwork, one should use mortars in accordance with the technology corresponding to this historical period, i.e., lime with additives that were identified during laboratory tests of samples taken from historical masonry. Low-grade mineral solutions with a low modulus of elasticity are preferable. It increases the crack resistance of the masonry under temperature and humidity effects. The article also shows that improper jointing of masonry joints facilitates the destruction of masonry. It happens when areas of accumulation of rainwater are formed, leading to increased wetting of stones in areas of direct impact of rainfall.

Osseous-plastic material «Perfoost» - demineralized lyophilized perforated allografs- was elaborated at CITO in 1997. Study of mechanical characteristics showed that «Perfoost» grafts had high plasticity. Mechanical stiffness allowed to use that material for substitution of marginal bone defects. Study in vitro showed high efficacy of cloning that was indirect evidence that demineralized allografts had osteoinductive properties. Between 1998-2002 at the Department of bone pathology for children and adolescents 121 patients, aged 1-18, with primary tumor, tumor-like diseases and systemic inherited skeleton pathology were operated on with «Perfoost». Follow up period ranged from 1 years to 4 years 10 months. In vast bone defects demineralized allografts were used in combination with frozen cortical implants and metallosteosynthesis. Restoration of bone tissue was achieved in the period from 8 to 12 months. In patients with fibrous dysplasia who underwent extensive bone resection, the time of bone restoration increased by 16 months. Good and satisfactory results were observed in 98,3% of patients.

Abstract Information on the effect of a polysilicate solution obtained by mixing liquid glass with a silicic acid sol on the structure formation of lime compositions is presented. It was revealed that the amount of specific heat released when lime is wetted with a polysilicate solution is greater than when lime is wetted with water. This is due to the additionally released heat due to the chemical interaction of lime with polysilicate solution. It was found that the introduction of a polysilicate solution accelerates the development of plastic strength. For comparison, we used liquid glass and a sol of silicic acid as an additive. The synergistic effect of the influence of the polysilicate solution on the structure formation of lime finishing compositions was established, which manifests itself in the acceleration of the set plastic strength in comparison with silica sol and water glass. It has been established that the introduction of a polysilicate solution into the lime mixture formulation contributes to an increase in the resistance to slipping of the finishing layer. The optimal thickness of the finishing layer was determined, which is 20 mm, at which sliding from the vertical surface is not observed.

Introduction. Plastic surgery is a medical specialty dealing with corrections of defects, improvements in appearance and restoration of lost function. Ancient Times. The first recorded account of reconstructive plastic surgery was found in ancient Indian Sanskrit texts, which described reconstructive surgeries of the nose and ears. In ancient Greece and Rome, many medicine men performed simple plastic cosmetic surgeries to repair damaged parts of the body caused by war mutilation, punishment or humiliation. In the Middle Ages, the development of all medical braches, including plastic surgery was hindered. New age. The interest in surgical reconstruction of mutilated body parts was renewed in the XVIII century by a great number of enthusiastic and charismatic surgeons, who mastered surgical disciplines and became true artists that created new forms. Modern Era. In the XX century, plastic surgery developed as a modern branch in medicine including many types of reconstructive surgery, hand, head and neck surgery, microsurgery and replantation, treatment of burns and their sequelae, and esthetic surgery. Contemporary and future plastic surgery will continue to evolve and improve with regenerative medicine and tissue engineering resulting in a lot of benefits to be gained by patients in reconstruction after body trauma, oncology amputation, and for congenital disfigurement and dysfunction.

AbstractA greater awareness of the problems of land restoration to agriculture, and the additional powers of the 1981 Minerals Act, is resulting in a more scientific approach to land restoration. After considering the specifications required for an agricultural soil, sources of soil-forming material are considered. The importance is stressed of an investigation of surface soil resources prior to restoration, and preferably prior to excavation. By using the plastic limit as a threshold above which earthmoving should not proceed, soil damage can be reduced, but delays to site operations can be considerable. The adverse physical problems of restored soils and methods used to alleviate them are discussed.

This study examines the restoration of waste plastic polymers based on LDPE, HDPE or PP through dissolution/reprecipitation. Experimental conditions of the recycling process, including type of solvent/non-solvent, original polymer concentration and dissolution temperature were optimized. Results revealed that by using the different prepared solvents/non-solvents at various ratios and temperatures, the polymer recovery was always greater than 94%. The FTIR spectra and the thermal properties (melting point and crystallinity) of the polymers before and after recycling were measured using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Mechanical properties of the waste polymer before and after recycling were also measured. Besides small occasional deviations, the properties did not change. The tensile strength at maximum load was 7.1, 18.8, and 7.4 MPa for the recycled LDPE, HDPE and PP, respectively and 7.78, 18.54 and 7.86 MPa for the virgin polymer. For the waste, the strength was 6.2, 15.58 and 6.76 MPa.

This work aims to identify the mechanisms of restoration occurring in Ti-6Al-4V during hot plastic deformation and subsequent heat treatment. The allotropic phase transformation that occurs during cooling distorts the interpretation of the restoration mechanisms taking place at high temperatures. Therefore, analysis of deformed samples by conventional microscopy have led to controversies in the interpretation of the main dynamic restoration mechanism. Additionally, static restoration of the microstructure can occur during slow cooling, modifying the microstructure. These facts were mainly the reasons why discontinuous dynamic recrystallization and/or dynamic recovery has been reported as the main dynamic restoration mechanism for Ti-6Al-4V. In this work, we use in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction combined with conventional microscopy to determine the dynamic and static mechanisms of restoration during and after deformation at different strain rates. The results show dynamic recovery as main mechanism of restoration during deformation in the β field, denoted by sub-grain formation and a misorientation dependency of the strain rate. After deformation, static recrystallization, grain growth, and coarsening of the β grains can be observed, especially at strain rates higher than 0.1s−1. It is also demonstrated that the nucleation of new grains can occur within the very first seconds of the isothermal heat treatment.

Subject. Currently, tooth loss prosthetics using implants are widely used. An important problem is the loss of bone tissue due to infections around the implant. Micro-gaps at the implant-abutment interface can contribute to infection with microorganisms.The aim of this study was to investigate the precision of connecting the implant-abutment components with simultaneous loading and temporary restoration. Methodology. The precision of the "implant – abutment – artificial crown" connection was studied on a clinical case with simultaneous removal of a tooth root, followed by implant placement and temporary restoration. Before installing the implant, specialized programs combined a three-dimensional CT model of the jaw with a 3D model of the dentition obtained as a result of scanning. To study precision, a duplicate plastic crown was made according to this virtual plan and fixed in a similar implant. The "implant-crown" model was fixed in plaster and a section was made up to the level of the "implant-abutment-artificial crown" connection, which was studied using electron microscopy at magnification of 50, 100 and 200 times. Results. Electron microscopy data showed that the junction of the internal surface of the implant with the plastic "abutment" had a gap width in the range of 54-77 microns. Conclusion. The exact fit of the restoration on the implant was confirmed by electron microscopy. In the presented example, due to the production of temporary restoration, it was possible to reduce the number of manipulations with the implant-abutment components. Modern milling and 3D printing technologies show high precision.

Abstract Hairline is a crucial landmark in facial aesthetics. Its restoration in terms of position, continuity and hair growth is of a paramount importance in facial plastic aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using local tissue only in the restoration of skin and soft tissue defects affecting the hair-line. A brief retrospective analysis of clinical cases with defects engaging the hairline was made. The majority of the patients (20 out of 22) were operated because of skin lesions of different entities. In 7 of the cases the direct closure technique was applied as a surgical tool for hairline restoration and in 15 of them rotational flaps were the best reconstructive option. A special emphasis is put on the defect size in regards of choosing the right surgical technique for defect closure in order to achieve the best aesthetic outcome in the hairline restoration.

Background. The return of the original functions of the anterior cruciate ligament after its reconstruction is the most important task of rehabilitation. Therefore, the development of modern and effective methods for its restoration is an urgent and important task. Objective. To develop an algorithm of rehabilitation measures for the restoration of the anterior cruciate ligament after its plastic surgery using modern and effective methods of physical therapy. Material and methods. To develop the algorithm, methods of interval vacuum therapy with the "Vacusport" device and kinesiological tapes in combination with drug and non-drug therapies were used. The research methods included goniometry and motor tests. Statistical processing of the research results was performed using Wilcoxon test, Mann-Whitney test, Fisher's exact test, descriptive statistics. Results. Statistically significant dependences of the studied indicators and recovery periods on the algorithm of application of the developed complex of rehabilitation measures were revealed. For the "flexion angle" parameter the differences in the groups were significant at p<0.001 (W=231) at the 8th week of the postoperative period; for the "strength test" parameter at p<0.002 (the proportion in the experimental group was 55.17% vs. 13.79% in the control one) at the 24th week; for the "pain" parameter at p<0.0001 (the proportion of 69% vs. 3.45%) at the 6th week; for the "edema " parameter at p<0.0002 (58.62% vs. 50% respectively) at the 6th week. Conclusions. A new method of using interval vacuum therapy and kinesiotaping in the complex of rehabilitation measures for the restoration of the anterior cruciate ligament after its reconstruction has been developed. The method significantly reduces the time of recovery.

Forest restoration in Brazil has gained relevance in the country’s environmental agenda, due to the need for forest recovery of large liabilities of existing forests and participation in several international vegetation restoration agreements. However, forest restoration management faces challenges, it being necessary to create a database of species-level performances to increase the success of these projects. The objective was to evaluate the survival and growth of five Atlantic Forest native species (Anadenanthera macrocarpa; Ceiba speciosa; Cytharexyllum myrianthum; Hymenaea courbaril; and Peltophorum dubium) in plastic bags (1177 cm3) and tubes (180 cm3). Ninety seedlings (18 of each species) were planted per container. Plant performance in the field consisted of evaluating the increase in the diameter and height of seedlings of the native forest species. Diameter at soil level (DSL) and plant height (H) were measured at 42 months after transplanting, and the monthly periodic increments (MPI) of the DSL and H were calculated. Plant survival (SV) of seedlings was affected by the type of container, registering the highest SV rates in those planted in plastic bags. Cytharexyllum myrianthum and H. courbaril presented high SV rates in tubes. The growth rate of the species at 42 months differed according to the containers tested. Cytharexyllum myrianthum presented the lowest SV rates (16.7–27.8%), regardless of the container used in this experiment. Ceiba speciosa was sensitive to the reduction in size of the container, showing low SV in tubes (27%) compared with plastic bags (61%); i.e., this species did not tolerate conditions with root growth restriction. Anadenathera macrocarpa and H. courbaril showed no differences in SV, regardless of the container used. The results assist the production of native species of the Atlantic Forest, reinforcing the need to understand performances in the field at the species level.

However, there is a growing population of women who wish to advance their hairline forward because of congenital high hairline, traction alopecia, or previous facial cosmetic surgery. There are several key differences between the female and male hairline. Understanding such differences and following certain guidelines will help the facial plastic surgeon to obtain beautiful and natural appearing results.

Purpose. Comparative analysis of the strength of hybrid restoration composites of light polymerization during their local loading using the phenomenon of acoustic emission. The following restoration composites were studied: Latelux, Tetric N-Ceram, Charisma Classic. Results. It was determined that the nature of the destruction of all composites is the same: elastic-plastic at the initial stage of the load with a transition to brittle as its further growth. Three types of composite failure are observed: correct, incorrect and mixed. The first predominated during fracture under the action of local loading of the Latelux composite, for Tetric N-Ceram and Charisma Classic materials a mixed type of fracture is characteristic. Conclusions. Analysis of the parameters of the AE signals showed that the signals had the highest amplitude and energy when the Tetric N-Ceram composite was destroyed, and the lowest – Latelux. All dental composites are dominated by high-energy ductile-brittle and brittle fracture, which indicates the spread of micro- and macrocracks of various sizes in materials. The superplastic deformation and microstructure evolution of solid solution treated 7050 aluminum alloy has been investigated. Tensile were conducted at 420 and 460 °C with the strain rate of 1.0×10-4 ~ 1.0×10-1 s-1, and the deformed samples were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. The results show that the solid solution treated 7050 aluminum alloy gained the maximum elongation of 273% at 460 °C with the strain rate of 1.0×10-2. At the deformation condition, a large part of plastic deformation was completed at an invariable stress. The microstructure transformed from coarse grains to a bimodal microstructure and then to a nearly uniform fine microstructure and the dynamic restoration process is from dynamic recrystallization plus dynamic recovery to dynamic recrystallization with the increasing deform strain during superplastic deformation.

Objective: to develop a method of glossectomy with single-staged glossoplasty in cancer of the mucous membrane of the front one-third part of the tongue. Material. The work is based on the results of surgery of five patients with localization of cancer on the front one-third of the tongue. An up-to-date method of glossectomy of the front one-third of the tongue has been developed. The post-resection defect is eliminated with musculomucosal grafts from the tongue remains with restoration of the volume symmetry of neotongue. Conclusion. The application of the tongue tissues for plastic replacement of the defect minimizes traumatism of the surgery. The preservation of innervation and restoration of the structure ensure good functional effect of the glossoplasty method.

Osseous defects in the anterior wall of maxillary sinuses, which might appear as a result of maxillary sinusotomy, cause the retraction of soft tissues into the sinus with a follow-up adhesion to the posterior wall. This results in the obliteration of the sinus with scar tissue, formation of synechia, the obliteration of anastomosis and an increase in disease recurrences rate. We propose a new method of the plastic closure of the defect of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus to restore the continuity of osseous walls of sinuses, which can be used in ORL clinics, oncological centers or dental clinics. For the first time a fragment made from polyether-polytetrafluorethylene threads was used. This implant has all necessary properties: it is durable, flexible and elastic; it is light and bioinert, it has no negative impact on the body; it is easily treated and is available for the use. We determined exact indications for the plastic closure of the defect of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus. Using of the implant and the placing it on the muscle-periosteal graft protects it from the contact with the mucous lining of the maxillary sinus. The fixation of this implant not only to the underlying soft tissues but also to the overlying ones, creates a good frame, whereas preliminary sinus sanitation by ultrasound cavitation and layer-by-layer low-frequency ultrasonication of stitches allows slash risks of infecting the plastic material and surrounding soft tissues and, as a result, to reduce the number of recurrences of the disease in patients.

Traditionally the auditory system was considered a hard-wired sensory system; this view has been challenged in recent years in light of the plasticity of other sensory systems, particularly the visual and somatosensory systems. Practical experience in clinical audiology together with the use of prosthetic devices, such as cochlear implants, contributed significantly to the present view on the plasticity of the central auditory system, which was originally based on data obtained in animal experiments. The loss of auditory receptors, the hair cells, results in profound changes in the structure and function of the central auditory system, typically demonstrated by a reorganization of the projection maps in the auditory cortex. These plastic changes occur not only as a consequence of mechanical lesions of the cochlea or biochemical lesions of the hair cells by ototoxic drugs, but also as a consequence of the loss of hair cells in connection with aging or noise exposure. In light of the aging world population and the increasing amount of noise in the modern world, understanding the plasticity of the central auditory system has its practical consequences and urgency. In most of these situations, a common denominator of central plastic changes is a deterioration of inhibition in the subcortical auditory nuclei and the auditory cortex. In addition to the processes that are elicited by decreased or lost receptor function, the function of nerve cells in the adult central auditory system may dynamically change in the process of learning. A better understanding of the plastic changes in the central auditory system after sensory deafferentation, sensory stimulation, and learning may contribute significantly to improvement in the rehabilitation of damaged or lost auditory function and consequently to improved speech processing and production.

The severe plastic deformation (SPD) procedure designated continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS/C2S2) technique based on rolling, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and Conform principle was simulated numerically by using finite element code DEFORM-3D. The influences of rolling reduction ratio on restoration ratio of work-piece geometry, effective strain, output velocity of processed work-piece, torque of rollers, and energy consumption feature for the C2S2 procedure were investigated. The results show that rolling reduction ratio has significant influences on C2S2 procedure. With the increase of rolling reduction ratios (5%, 10% and 20%), the restoration ratio of work-pieces geometry reduced, the magnitude of effective strain kept almost unchanged, the output velocity of processed work-piece increased, the total torque of rollers decreased, and the energy consumption used for making unit volume work-piece subjected to unit straining reduced considerably. It was found that the optimal rolling reduction ratio was about ~10 %, where the energy consumption reduced by 8.16 %, whereas the restoration ratio of work-piece geometry was almost the same as constrasting with the rolling reduction ratio of 5 %.

The availability of safe, clinically useful and cost effective bone allografts have resulted in changes in surgical treatment with a concomitant increase in demand for bone allografts grafts for the purpose of reconstruction in plastic surgery. They offer an attractive alternative to bone autograft because their supply is less limited, they allow structural restoration of the skeleton, and their surfaces support bone formation. We report a case series of 13 patients where freeze dried bone allografts were used for reconstruction. All grafts met standards recommended by the Bone Banks and the FDA. Objective evaluation of the persistence of graft volume was obtained by radiography, whereas subjective estimation of graft volume was obtained by patient response on regular follow up upto a period of one year. Bone allografts can be used in any kind of surgery involving bone from minor defects to major bone loss after tumour resection. Freeze-dried allograft bone is a safe and equal alternative for bone autograft without donor-site morbidity.

Some methods for quantitative characterization of the microstructures deformed to large plastic strains both before and after annealing are discussed and illustrated using examples of samples after equal channel angular extrusion and cold-rolling. It is emphasized that the microstructures in such deformed samples exhibit a heterogeneity in the microstructural refinement by high angle boundaries. Based on this, a new parameter describing the fraction of regions containing predominantly low angle boundaries is introduced. This parameter has some advantages over the simpler high angle boundary fraction parameter, in particular with regard to data collected from electron-backscatter diffraction investigations, where boundaries with very low misorientation angles cannot be reliably detected. It is shown how this parameter can be related to the recrystallization behavior. Another parameter, based on mode of the distribution of dislocation cell sizes is outlined, and it is demonstrated how this parameter can be used to investigate the uniformity, or otherwise, of the restoration processes occurring during annealing of metals deformed to large plastic strains.
