This research is a part of BREAD PHENO, a PhenoApps BREAD project at K-State which combines contemporary advances in image processing and machine vision to deliver transformative mobile applications through established breeder networks. In this platform, novel image analysis segmentation algorithms are being developed to model and extract plant phenotypes. As a part of this research, the traditional Watershed segmentation algorithm has been extended and the primary goal is to accurately count and characterize the seeds in an image. The new approach can be used to characterize a wide variety of crops. Further, this algorithm is migrated into Android making use of the Android APIs and the first ever user-friendly Android application implementing the extended Watershed algorithm has been developed for Mobile field-based high-throughput phenotyping (HTP).

Plant species, and especially tree species, constitute a well adapted target for an automatic recognition process based on image analysis. The criteria that make their identification possible are indeed often morphological visual elements, which are well described and referenced by botany. This leads to think that a recognition through shape is worth considering. Leaves stand out in this context as the most accessible discriminative plant organs, and are subsequently the most often used for this problem recently receiving a particular attention. Automatic identification however gives rise to a fair amount of complex problems, linked with the processing of images, or in the difficult nature of the species classification itself, which make it an advanced application for pattern recognition. This thesis considers the problem of tree species identification from leaf images within the framework of a smartphone application intended for a non-specialist audience. The images on which we expect to work are then potentially very complex scenes and their acquisition rather unsupervised. We consequently propose dedicated methods for image analysis, in order to segment and interpret tree leaves, using an original shape modelling and deformable templates. The introduction on prior knowledge on the shape of objects enhances significatively the quality and the robustness of the information we extract from the image. All processing being carried out on the mobile device, we developed those algorithms with concern towards the material constraints of their exploitation. We also introduce a very specific description of leaf shapes, inspired by the determining characteristics listed in botanical references. These different descriptors constitute independent sources of high-level information that are fused at the end of the process to identify species, while providing the user with a possible semantic interpretation. The classification performance demonstrated over approximately 100 tree species are competitive with state-of-the-art methods of the domain, and show a particular robustness to difficult natural background images. Finally, we integrated the implementation of our recognition system into the \textbf{Folia} application for iPhone, which constitutes a validation of our approaches and methods in a real-world use

This thesis is part of the ANR ReVeRIES, which aims to use mobile technologies to help people better understand their environment and in particular the plants that surround them. More precisely, the ReVeRIES project is based on a mobile application called Folia developed as part of the ANR ReVeS project and capable of recognising tree and shrub species based on photos of their leaves. This prototype differs from other tools in that it is able to simulate the behaviour of the botanist. In the context of the ReVeRIES project, we propose to go much further by developing new aspects: multimodal species recognition, learning through play and citizen science. The purpose of this thesis is to focus on the first of these three aspects, namelythe analysis of images of plant organs for identification.More precisely, we consider the main trees and shrubs, endemic or exotic, found in metropolitan France. The objective of this thesis is to extend the recognition algorithm by taking into account other organs in addition to the leaf. This multi-modality is indeed essential if we want the user to learn and practice the different methods of recognition for which botanists use the variety of organs (i.e. leaves, flowers, fruits and bark). The method used by Folia for leaf recognition being dedicated, because simulating the work of a botanist on the leaf, cannot be applied directly to other organs. Thus, new challenges are emerging, both in terms of image processing and data fusion. The first part of the thesis was devoted to the implementation of image processing methods for the identification of plant species. The identification of tree species from bark images was the first to be studied. The descriptors developed take into account the structure of the bark inspired from the criteria used by botanists. Fruits and flowers required a segmentation step before their description. A new segmentation method that can be used on smartphones has been developed to work in spite of the high variability of flowers and fruits. Finally, descriptors were extracted on fruits and flowers after the segmentation step. We decided not to separate flowers and fruits because we showed that a user new to botany does not always know the difference between these two organs on so-called "ornamental" trees (not fruit trees). For fruits and flowers, prediction is not only made on their species but also on their genus and family, botanical groups reflecting a similarity between these organs. The second part of the thesis deals with the combination of descriptors of the different organs: leaves, bark, fruits and flowers. In addition to basic combination methods, we propose to consider the confusion between species, as well as predictions of affiliations in botanical taxa higher than the species. Finally, an opening chapter is devoted to the processing of these images by convolutional neural networks. Indeed, Deep Learning is increasingly used in image processing, particularly for plant organs. In this context, we propose to visualize the learned convolution filters extracting information, in order to make the link between the information extracted by these networks and botanical elements

The use of computer vision has been gaining ground in the agricultural context, especially with the evolution of the concept of precision agriculture. Applications such as irrigation, fertilization and pest control are just some of the scenarios that this technology can be used. However, the demand for accessible and efficient systems together with the variations and visual noise from an external environment presents challenges to these processes. It was proposed in this study an analysis of the literature and a series of experimental investigations of image processing techniques, to search for better relations between computational cost and performance in the detection of seedlings, aiming to achieve real time operations with the use of common and low cost hardware. For this, the work investigates the composition of segmentation strategies from different color spaces and color constancy methods, in order to combat light variation, one of the major sources of instability in agricultural vision applications. The proposed experiments were divided into two phases; in the first the measurement system was evaluated, defining the metrics and suitable conditions for the experiments at second phase, composed of a sequence of comparative experiments of segmentation strategies under different lighting conditions. The results showed that the solutions are very dependent on the conditions of the scene and a series of promising segmentation alternatives were obtained. Their eligibility, however, depends on considerations about the computational availability and context of the application.

The need of high performance in terms of image quality, high resolution and wide field of view increases the complexity and the volume/mass budget of telescopes and their instruments. Such constraints concern also a wide range of applications: astronomy, defense and surveillance, space missions, biomedical imaging, camera objectives, smartphones, drones. To overcome these issues in astronomical instruments, I consider two technologies: freeform optics and curved sensors, offering a new era for the design of optical systems.Increasing the size of low-orbiting space telescopes is necessary to reach high resolution observation of planets, which implies more complex imaging systems and large focal planes. The use of homothetic imaging systems as Spot and Pleiades pushbroom satellites would lead to prohibitive large linear focal plane dimensions, especially for infrared missions requiring a cryostat. Two optical telescopes are presented, they use an image segmentation made of freeform mirrors which allows to reduce significantly the size of the focal plane. Curved sensors enable to reduce drastically the complexity of imagers and spectrometers by correcting the field curvature aberration directly in the focal plane. I present comparative studies on wide field optical designs from astronomical to Fisheye instruments and the results obtained with our two wide field imaging prototypes using the first visible full-frame CMOS curved sensors

The main goal of this project is to develop a marketing plan for Split - an innovative product that allows a practical consumption of wine in a fully recyclable, unbreakable and portable format for places where consumption is legally forbidden or, due to logistics, becomes difficult. This plan focuses on the identification of the brand target, the possibility of implementing a co-branding strategy and, finally, on identifying new distribution channels. The leading methodology used for this project was Action Research, which allowed a closer relationship with the company. Both primary and secondary data were collected simultaneously. At a first stage, an interview to a Vinko employee was carried out and after, it was developed a survey, not only to identify the Split target, based on Trent & Bruwer (2003) lifestyle segmentation, but also to answer research questions related with co-branding strategy and new distribution channels. Finally, it was developed a focus group focusing on the brand target and new points of sale. To sum up, one could conclude that the brand target is Enjoyment oriented, social wine drinker and that co-branding is a strategy that should be applied with other wine brands, also identified. For distribution channels, points of purchase were also proposed by the target which vary between bars, restaurants in refurbished markets and festivals. Note that the development of this marketing plan took into account domestic market threats and opportunities, and that the proposed actions are in line with the new positioning: SplitWine, Split the moment!

This Master's Degree Final Work aims to develop the first marketing plan for Miguel Louro Wines company. The growing competitiveness of the wine industry in Portugal, the need to increase the brand awareness and to improve the promotion and place strategies that reflect an increase in sales arises. Methodologically, the first steps of action research were grasped, following a descriptive approach and mixed study type. Primary and secondary data were collected. A semi-structured interview was conducted to the producer and manager of the company, useful especially for the internal analysis. Subsequently, an online survey was made to wine consumers to gauge the brand awareness, to characterize the clients and define the target. The clients' characterization and definition of the B2C target were based on segmentation by lifestyle used by (Johnson & Bruwer, 2003). The target set is the "enjoyment oriented, social wine drinker", whose characterization is consistent between clients and prospect clients and the characterization of the authors, and the "experimenter, highly knowledgeable wine drinkers" that being less coherent, demonstrated strategic interest. The project proposes marketing tactics that meet the goals defined, positioning Miguel Louro Wines as an authentic, with personality and different wines brand whose its awareness comes from quality.

During embryonic development, the hindbrain undergoes a segmentation process which leads to the formation of 7-8 compartments called rhombomeres, which are essential for the proper development of neuronal populations. The transcription factor Krox20 plays a major role in this process. However, the upstream factors that lead to the initiation and maintenance of Krox20 expression remain poorly characterized. Krox20 expression is under the control of three cis-regulatory enhancers, termed A, B and C. Whereas elements B and C are in charge of initiating Krox20 expression, element A is involved in the establishment of a positive autoregulatory loop. In order to better understand the events controlling Krox20 expression, I performed an analysis of the factors and sequences required for the activity of elements B and C. I could show that element C requires the binding of Hox, Pbx and Meis proteins and that SP/Klf transcription factors are able to bind to a conserved motif within element C to activate transcription. In addition, I showed that element B activity require binding of the MafB transcription factor, which cooperates with the vHnfl transcription factor to activate Krox20 expression in r5. Finally, I started a characterization of the autoregulatory process in the zebrafish embryo and I tested the hypothesis of an intercellular transfer of Krox20 protein

This thesis deals with the Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) problem in indoor environments. In this context, we chose a visual SLAM using an RGB-D sensor (Kinect) to estimate the camera trajectory and to build a 3D map of the environment in realtime. Despite RGB-D cameras advantages (low cost, color images and depth maps), depth data resulting from this kind of sensors may be noisy, which affects pose estimation. In addition, due to points clouds sizes, the resulting global map is heavyweight and contains many redundant 3D points. In order to reduce the impact of these weaknesses on resolving the SLAM problem, we propose to use 3D planes, which are dominant in indoor scenes, for both camera poses estimations and 3D based-planes maps building process. Hence, 3D planes are used to generate 3D planar feature featuring less depth noise than the raw points extracted directly from points clouds. By regularizing depth values of raw 3D feature points belonging to these planes, we improve pose estimation when the scene is mainly composed of planes. Then, the detected 3D planes are used to build the global 3D map, creating a light representation of the environment based on these planes. The map is iteratively built from each new camera pose either by merging new planes to the existing ones or by adding new planes to the map. Thus, unlike conventional point-based representation, the size of the resulting 3D map is considerably reduced and the built map is more compact compared to point-based maps. These maps maybe used by mobile robotics and navigation applications. To show the benefits of our works, the conducted experiments to evaluate localisation accuracy, the influence of subsampled RGB-Ddata on plane detection, as well as quality of 3D plane-based maps against real scenes. Such plane-based maps represents a first step towards semantic maps

This is due to what you want to save more time for carrying out more activities on the day. The idea of a business that is being presented is a table reservation application, which serves as an intermediary between restaurants and diners. The application is called ROT365, and has innovative functions that begin with the reservation, then you can move to the choice of the order and finally you can make the payment through their mobile devices. While the restaurants are using an integrated system, which can observe the habits of its users. This idea of negotiation seeks to provide facilities for booking processes, increase the quality of service and save time for both parties. For this, it has developed commercial, operational and financial evaluations to determine the viability of implementing the project in the market. Next, we present the business project ROT365, an application intermediary between restaurants and diners for the reservation of a table, choice of dishes and online payments.

Intelligent autonomous actions in an ordinary environment by a mobile robot require maps. A map holds the spatial information about the environment and gives the 3D geometry of the surrounding of the robot to not only avoid collision with complex obstacles, but also selflocalization and for task planning. However, in the future, service and personal robots will prevail and need arises for the robot to interact with the environment in addition to localize and navigate. This interaction demands the next generation robots to understand, interpret its environment and perform tasks in human-centric form. A simple map of the environment is far from being sufficient for the robots to co-exist and assist humans in the future. Human beings effortlessly make map and interact with environment, and it is trivial task for them. However, for robots these frivolous tasks are complex conundrums. Layering the semantic information on regular geometric maps is the leap that helps an ordinary mobile robot to be a more intelligent autonomous system. A semantic map augments a general map with the information about entities, i.e., objects, functionalities, or events, that are located in the space. The inclusion of semantics in the map enhances the robot’s spatial knowledge representation and improves its performance in managing complex tasks and human interaction. Many approaches have been proposed to address the semantic SLAM problem with laser scanners and RGB-D time-of-flight sensors, but it is still in its nascent phase. In this thesis, an endeavour to solve semantic SLAM using one of the time-of-flight sensors which gives only depth information is proposed. Time-of-flight cameras have dramatically changed the field of range imaging, and surpassed the traditional scanners in terms of rapid acquisition of data, simplicity and price. And it is believed that these depth sensors will be ubiquitous in future robotic applications. In this thesis, an endeavour to solve semantic SLAM using one of the time-of-flight sensors which gives only depth information is proposed. Starting with a brief motivation in the first chapter for semantic stance in normal maps, the state-of-the-art methods are discussed in the second chapter. Before using the camera for data acquisition, the noise characteristics of it has been studied meticulously, and properly calibrated. The novel noise filtering algorithm developed in the process, helps to get clean data for better scan matching and SLAM. The quality of the SLAM process is evaluated using a context-based similarity score metric, which has been specifically designed for the type of acquisition parameters and the data which have been used. Abstracting semantic layer on the reconstructed point cloud from SLAM has been done in two stages. In large-scale higher-level semantic interpretation, the prominent surfaces in the indoor environment are extracted and recognized, they include surfaces like walls, door, ceiling, clutter. However, in indoor single scene object-level semantic interpretation, a single 2.5D scene from the camera is parsed and the objects, surfaces are recognized. The object recognition is achieved using a novel shape signature based on probability distribution of 3D keypoints that are most stable and repeatable. The classification of prominent surfaces and single scene semantic interpretation is done using supervised machine learning and deep learning systems. To this end, the object dataset and SLAM data are also made publicly available for academic research

The context of this thesis is the digital geometry. An aim of this field is to develop a theoretical framework to implement in Z^n the basis of the Euclidean geometry. The discrete concepts are thus defined as close as possible to their continuous counterparts (such as distance, straight line, convexity, ...). Many studies have already been led within this research area to define the workspace, the fundamental objects and figure their properties out. Recognition algorithms have been designed for these discrete primitives and used in problems such as pattern recognition, geometric features estimation and many more. However, most of these studies rely on the regularity of fundamental structures of the digital space, that usually comes from their arithmetical definitions. But in practice, objects may be corrupted by the acquisition devices (like scanners or MRI) which eliminate this regularity. This thesis is focused on 3D digital objects. We introduce a new discrete primitive: the blurred piece of a discrete plane. Its aim is to bring some flexibility in treatments in order to design algorithms that yield statisfying results on both noisy and non-noisy digital objects. Relying on this new primtive, we define different geometric feature estimators on the border of such objects and show how to use them to guide the segmentation and polyhedrization processes of this border

This thesis presents work towards a unified framework for semi-automated video indexing and interactive retrieval. To create an efficient index, a set of representative key frames are selected from the entire video content. We developed an automatic shot boundary detection algorithm to get rid of parameters and thresholds. We adopted a SVM classifier due to its ability to use very high dimensional feature spaces while at the same time keeping strong generalization guarantees from few training examples. We deeply evaluated the combination of features and kernels and present interesting results obtained, for shot extraction TRECVID 2006 Task. We then propose an interactive video retrieval system: RETINVID, to significantly reduce the number of key frames annotated by the user. The key frames are selected based on their ability to increase the knowledge of the data. We perform an experiment against the 2005 TRECVID benchmark for high-level task

The digitizing of plans-reliefs is a critical issue for the preservation of the one-hundred scale models of the collection but also for valorization of the ancient French strongholds. Hence, we propose a reverse engineering of the plans-reliefs applied on the bastioned fortification. The KASToR approach (Knowledge based Approach: from Scale Model To 3D Replica) is based on an ontology of bastioned fortification which has been created thanks to treatises of military architecture. Then, a library of parametric objects is implemented in Grasshopper, a visual programming tool, in order to segment the surveys for the automatic adjustment of the parametric fortification works. Our proposal allows the geometrical correction and optimization but also the semantic enhacement of raw data, which are the conditions that now must be meet by 3D models for their integration in information systems

In the present work, it was taken into account how the lifestyle has changed with respect to the current situation that the country is going through. Due to this, the implementation of iCook is being carried out, a business model that provides ready-to-cook inputs, saving time for consumers and avoiding exposure when going out to make purchases to cook. First, market research began. Thanks to this information collected, it was possible to segment these Peruvian consumers to obtain the right objective for iCook; as well as, delimit the geographical area for its development as a business. Second, for the implementation of this business model, validations were carried out, with the purpose of knowing the acceptance of the brand, in order to satisfy the needs of the target audience. Once the acceptance of the business model was know, the objectives, goals and strategies to be developed both in the short and in the long term were proposed, in order to know the budget required in the first three years of the project's life. Finally, it was conclude that the project is viable and creates value, since a positive Net Present Value (NPV) was obtained and greater than the Opportunity Cost (COK). On the other hand, the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) also exceeds the COK, reflecting that the project is sustainable and is in optimal conditions to go live in the Peruvian market.

The current utilization of electronic devices in the majority of our systems impose to take into account the parasiting couplings created by electromagnetic (EM) interactions. It is in this point of view which this work was built in order to characterize the interaction between an electromagnetic wave and an active component, which is represented here by a HP07 Field Effect Transistor (FET) of UMS. This study is based on the application of an hybrid method. This method combines a 3D electromagnetic simulation, which employs a Finite Element Method (FEM) in the frequency domain, and a classical circuit one. As the electromagnetic illumination of the FET is a "back door" one, this FET is included in a partially opened metallic cavity : the NATO cylinder. The heterogeneity between the cylinder dimensions and the FET ones and the complexity of the apertures have imposed the implementation of another electromagnetic excitation in the IRCOM software to optimize the decomposition domain method
