ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Historically root diseases have been a production-limiting problem for the strawberry industry worldwide. In the Western Cape Province of South Africa the most serious root disease is black root rot, which causes losses of up to 30%, annually. The aims of this study were to investigate aspects of the etiology and epidemiology of this disease in the Western Cape, and to provide information that can be incorporated in an integrated disease management strategy. In Chapter I a summary of published information on this disease is presented. Disease symptoms include severe stunting of plants, which have black, rotted, reduced root systems. Even though this disease is of great economic importance, the etiology remains unresolved. However, soilborne fungal root pathogens, particularly Pythium and Rhizoctonia spp. have been implicated as major role players. Control of this disease, as well as the other root diseases affecting strawberries, has relied on soil fumigation with broad spectrum chemical fumigants, in particular methyl bromide. However, due to the ozone depleting action of methyl bromide it was decided at the signing of the Montreal Protocol to remove this chemical from the market. This action has caused great demand for alternative measures to control root diseases on many crops including strawberries. Development of integrated disease management strategies is dependent upon a more complete understanding of the etiology, biology and ecology of the disease complex. In Chapter 2 fungal pathogens associated with diseased plants were isolated and Koch's postulates were carried out. The most frequently isolated fungal pathogens were Pythium irregulare, Rhizoctonia spp. and Cylindrocarpon destructans. Two morphotypes of Rhizoctonia were isolated viz. a brown and a white type. Pythium irregulare was isolated more frequently in July than in September, and was not isolated at all in November. Rhizoctonia spp. were present at all sampling dates but were more frequently isolated in November than at the other times. All the fungi that were tested were pathogenic and caused root lesions. Cylindrocarpon destructans and Coniella fragariae did not have a stunting effect on the plants. These results confirm a major role for Pythium and Rhizoctonia in the black root rot complex and suggest that there is a complimentary seasonal variation in occurrence between these two pathogens. The Rhizoctonia species and anastomosis groups of isolates obtained from diseased strawberries in the Western Cape Province were determined, and their pathogenicity and relative virulence assessed. Both binucleate and multinucleate types were recovered from diseased roots and identified as R. fragariae and R. so/ani, respectively. All isolates of R. solani were members of anastomosis group (AG) 6, whereas three AG types were identified among isolates of R. fragariae, viz. AG-A, AG-G and AG-I at a relative occurrence of 69%, 25%, 6% respectively. All Rhizoctonia isolates were pathogenic to strawberry, but R. solani (AG 6) was the most virulent causing severe stunting of plants. This is the first species confirmation and AG type identification of Rhizoctonia taxa causing root rot of strawberries in South Africa. An assessment of the presence and quantity of black root rot pathogens associated with soils prior to fumigation and post fumigation with methyl bromide, was made in Chapter 4. Isolations were also made from nursery plants to determine whether any black root rot pathogens were in the plants before transplanting. Results demonstrated that after fumigation the soil was free of all pathogenic fungi associated with the disease. However, the main pathogens involved in black root rot, viz. Rhizoctonia fragariae, R. solani and Pythium spp. were isolated from nursery plants. The fact that the plants are already infected with these pathogens renders the prospects for control of this disease difficult. Further studies are urgently required to develop production practices that can be included in disease management programmes. In vitro studies were carried out to determine the ECso values of different fungicides for isolates of Pythium irregulare, Rhizoctonia fragariae AG-A, AG-G and AG-I and R. solani AG 6. Benomyl, fludioxonil and tolc1ofos-methyl were used in these tests. Field trials were also conducted using these fungicides. In Chapter 5 it is shown that in general application of fungicides improved the yield and did not affect the survival rate of strawberry plants. Fludioxonil showed potential for short-term use. Applications of fungicides that targeted specific fungal genera were not sufficient to control the disease. Seasonal fluctuation of Pythium and Rhizoctonia spp. became apparent with the occurrence of Pythium being relatively high early in the season but low late in the season. Conversely, the occurrence of Rhizoctonia was low at the beginning of the season but high late in the season. In the short-term there is potential for fungicide applications as part of an integrated disease management strategy, but the economic feasibility of this practice needs to be assessed. In this study the major pathogens causing black root rot were identified in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, and important information regarding the epidemiology of the disease was reported. These results can be incorporated in an integrated management strategy to reduce losses of strawberry production, attJibutable to black root rot.
Grondgedraagde wortelpatogene swamme, spesifiek Pythium en Rhizoctonia spp., is egter as belangrike rolspelers geïdentifiseer. Sowel tweekernige as multikernige tipes is vanaf siek wortels geïsoleer en respektiewelik as R. fragariae en R. so/ani geïdentifiseer.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Fruit and Leaf Spot Disease (FLSD) of citrus, caused by Phaeoramularia angolensis, is found only in 18 countries in Africa, the Comores Islands in the Indian Ocean and Yemen in the Arabian peninsula. The major citrus export countries in Africa are Morocco, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is the only country affected by FLSD. FLSD is a disease of major phytosanitary and economic importance and its devastating effect on citrus is highlighted by the fact that the damage is cosmetic, which renders the fruit unmarketable. Total crop losses are not uncommon in Kenya. The aims of the present study, therefore, was was to determine the occurrence of P. angolensis in Zimbabwe and neighbouring Mozambique, to compare these isolates with the Cercospora Fresen. isolates from Swaziland and South Africa, to determine the epidemiology of the pathogen and to implement an effective control strategy to prevent the spread of FLSD. Leaf samples with citrus canker-like lesions collected in the early 1990’s in Zimbabwe were found to be infected by the fungus, Phaeoramularia angolensis. Surveys were undertaken to determine the spread and intensity of FLSD in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. In Zimbabwe, P. angolensis was limited to an area above the 19° south latitude, predominantly the moist areas and not the low-lying drier parts of the country. In Mozambique, no P. angolensis symptoms were found. Observations during the survey indicated that no proper management systems were implemented by Zimbabwean growers. A cercosporoid fungus causing a new Fruit and Leaf Spot Disease on Citrus in South Africa was identified. From morphological and rDNA sequence data (ITS 1, 5.8S and ITS 2), it was concluded that the new disease was caused by Cercospora penzigii, belonging to the Cercospora apii species complex. The genera Pseudophaeoramularia and Phaeoramularia are regarded as synonyms of Pseudocercospora, and subsequently a new combination was proposed in Pseudocercospora as P. angolensis. Cercospora gigantea was shown to not represent a species of Cercospora, while Mycosphaerella citri was found to be morphologically variable, suggesting that it could represent more than one taxon. A control strategy for the control of FLSD was evaluated in the study. The data showed that P. angolensis in Zimbabwe can be managed successfully by the removal of all old and neglected orchards, and on timely fungicide applications. Trifloxystrobin + mancozeb + mineral spray oil (20 g + 200 g + 500 ml/100 l water) applied in November, January and March was the most effective treatment. Three applications of benomyl + mancozeb + mineral spray oil (25 g + 200 g + 500 ml/100 l water) applied during the same period, was the second most effective treatment, and two applications (November and January) of trifloxystrobin + mineral spray oil (20g + 500 ml/100 l water) and difenoconazole (40 g) per 100 l/water applied twice in November and January, the third most effective treatment. The spore trap and weather data showed that P. angolensis needs high moisture and temperatures in excess of 25°C for disease development. It is concluded that P. angolensis in Zimbabwe can be managed successfully by implementing a holistic approach, which should be supported by the authorities, organised agriculture and all technical personnel involved in citrus production.
Totale opbrengsverliese is nie ongewoon in lande soos Kenya nie.

Due to the recent detection in Brazil of Monilinia laxa, that similar to M. fructicola causes the brown rot of peaches, and the lack of information about the epidemiology of the causal agents of this disease from subtropical regions, raised the need of such a study, which the aims were to determine the best temperature and wetness duration conditions to the development of M. fructicola and M. laxa in vitro and to infection and colonization of peaches by conidia from both pathogens. Four M. fructicola isolates and one M. laxa isolate, collected from infected fruit of São Paulo orchards and maintained at the Epidemiology Laboratory at ESALQ, were studied. Temperature and wetness duration effects on conidia germination in vitro and temperature effects on mycelial growth and sporulation of pathogens were evaluated. Trials to evaluate the sensitivity of isolates to the fungicide iminoctadine were also conducted. Furthermore, mature peaches were wounded on the surface, inoculated with a conidia suspension and incubated at different temperatures during different wet chamber periods. Incidence and severity of the disease were evaluated daily. Sporulation was evaluated at the end of each treatment. The favorable range of temperature to conidia germination of M. laxa, from 5 to 30ºC, was greater than M. fructicola range, from 10 to 30ºC. The wetness duration showed no influence on conidia germination. The best range of temperature for mycelial growth of both M. fructicola and M. laxa was from 20 to 25ºC. Sporulation of M. laxa showed an inverse relationship to the incubation temperature. No relationship between temperature and conidia production was found for M. fructicola. Both species were sensitive to the iminoctadine fungicide in vitro. Incidence of brown rot was greater than 80.9% in all treatments, for both species. At 10ºC incubation and latency periods were shorter for M. laxa than for M. fructicola. The best temperatures for lesion development varied between 15 and 25ºC for both pathogens. Sporulation of the two species showed no relationship to the temperature on the in vivo trials. Visual differences were observed on pathogen symptoms on fruit.

Abstract: From the viruses were described infecting passionfruit plants in Brasil, and the Cowpea aphid borne mosaic virus (CABMV), is considered the most hazardous. Depending on the spread velocity of aphids and the age that the plants are infected, the crops doesnt produce commercial fruits. The present study was designed to evaluate the diversity and dynamic population of aphids in the Alta Paulista, SP region and aspects of seed transmission. For this, four regions (East and West of Marília city, Guaimbê and Ocauçú) were monitored for 24 months using yellow water Moerick trap. The predominance of the genus Aphis was observed in the four evaluated areas. Other species founded in the area were: Myzus persicae, Geopenphigus flocculosus, Brevicoryne brassicae, Rhopalosiphum spp, Dysaphis spp and Lipaphis erysimi. The population curve of alate Aphis spp showed the highest frequency of flights during May, June, August and September. The Aphis spp (A. fabae, A. gossypii, A. spiraecola) probably is the most important vector of the CABMV in the region. New crops near old infected plants, were infected in three months. To evaluate properties of seed transmission, from 13056 collected from infected plants, 10592 were germinated and evaluated during two months for the presence of visual symptoms. No plants with simptoms were observed indicating no seed transmission.

Leaf wetness duration (LWD) is a very important variable for plant disease epidemiology, since it plays an important role in some epidemiological processes. So its determination is essential for the understanding of the climate and plant disease relationship. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: to determine the standard deployment for cylindrical LWD sensors over turfgrass; to assess the spatial variability of this variable in three different crops; to relate the LWD measured at three different crop canopies to that obtained in a weather station; and to compare the LWD estimated by empirical model with that measured by electronic sensors. Before the field assessments, all electronic sensors were painted with white latex paint and submitted to a heat treatment. After this first stage, all cylindrical sensors where installed over turfgrass at 30-cm height deployed facing south. Firstly, all cylindrical sensors were deployed at horizontal in order to assess the variability among them. After that, five different deployment angles were tested. The measurements provided by those sensors were compared with the standard measurement, provided by flat plate sensors at 30-cm height and deployed at 45º. In order to assess the LWD spatial variability, electronic sensors were placed in three different crop canopies: cotton, banana and coffee. The measurements obtained in those crops were compared with LWD measured by flat plate sensors in a standard deployment over turfgrass. LWD were estimated using the following models: NHRH>87%, CART, DPD e extended threshold of relative humidity, for the dry and wet seasons. The measurements provided by cylindrical sensors over turfgrass had good accuracy and precision. The change in the angle of sensor deployment had no effect on LWD measured by cylindrical sensors, for the studied conditions. However, cylindrical sensors should not be deployed at horizontal because previous studies showed that they could overestimate LWD when deployed at horizontal. The LWD spatial variability assessment showed that this variable is dependent on the plant and/or crop conditions, which control the canopy microclimate. The pattern of variation of LWD was different for each crop assessed. In the cotton crop, LWD variations were negligible. On the other hand, in the coffee crop LWD was longer in the lower parts of the canopy while in the banana crop it was longer in the top of the canopy. A good correlation between LWD measured over turfgrass and that obtained in the crop top was achieved, which demonstrates that it is possible to estimate LWD using weather station data. The models NHRH>87%, CART, DPD provided good estimates of LWD with mean absolute error ranging from 1.4 to 2.8 h in both dry and wet periods. During the dry season, those models overestimated the LWD. The extended threshold model had the worst performance in relation to the other models, so it is not advised to use this model for similar climate conditions to this study.

Recently a phytoplasma of the 16SrIX group was associated with citrus trees exhibiting symptoms of huanglongbing (HLB) in Sao Paulo state. However, due to the wide diversity of phytoplasmas that have been observed in several crops in Brazil, it is possible that in addition to the phytoplasma of group 16SrIX other phytoplasmas could also be associated with citrus trees. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate if others phytoplasmas besides that of the 16SrIX group are associated with citrus plants in the São Paulo state. Leaf samples from citrus trees, weeds and cicadellids were collected between June and October of 2010 from citrus orchards of four municipalities of the Sao Paulo state: Araraquara, Bebedouro, Piracicaba and Taquarituba. Nested PCR analysis revealed the presence of phytoplasmas associated with citrus trees (symptom: leaf chlorosis), weeds: Bidens pilosa (symptoms: phyllody and virescence), Leonorus sibiricus (symptom: leaf distortion), Solanum americanus (symptom: witches broom), Erigeron bonariensis (symptoms: redning and witches broom) e Euphorbia heterophylla (symptom: leaf distortion); and cicadellids of specie Agallia albidula (Uhler, 1895) (subfamily Agalliinae). The confirmation of the phytoplasma presence and molecular characterization was carried out by RFLP analysis and sequencing of the 16S rDNA region. A wide diversity of phytoplasmas was verified. Phytoplasmas of the 16SrIII and 16SrIX groups were associated with citrus trees in Piracicaba, while a phytoplasma of the 16SrVII group was associated with citrus trees in Bebedouro. Phytoplasmas of the 16SrIII group were associated with weeds belonging to the species B. pilosa, S. americanus and L. sibiricus in Piracicaba and a phytoplasma of the 16SrVII group was identified associated with plants of E. bonariensis and E. heterophylla in Piracicaba and Taquarituba, respectively. A phytoplasma of the 16SrIII group was associated with A. albidula in Taquarituba, suggesting that this cicadelid is a potential vector of phytoplasmas in citrus orchards. Based on the analysis of the 16S rDNA region, many of the found phytoplasmas are distinct from those already reported. Due to this distinction, these phytoplasmas were proposed as representatives of new subgroups of the groups 16SrIII, 16SrVII and 16SrIX. The results of this study dont allow us associate the found phytoplasmas with HLB or any other described disease. Thus, more studies are needed to identify the role of theses phytoplasmas as pathogens of citrus trees and weeds.

This work aimed to evaluate the progress and spatial pattern of Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC) in three regions in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. By bimonthly visual assessments three Pêra sweet orange/ Rangpur lime orchards in three regions (Northwest, Center and South) were mapped from july 1998 to december 2000. Progress was evaluated by fitting nine models do disease progress curves and by analysis of derivative curves. No model could be fitted to disease progress curves. Derivative curves showed peaks concentrated in spring and summer. To characterize spatial pattern the following analysis were used: ordinary runs, isopath areas;binary Taylor law; dispersion index and foci dynamics and structure analysis. All techniques showed small differences between regions and characterized CVC spatial pattern as slightly aggregated. By means of autocorrelation, spectral density analysis, discriminant analysis and lag correlation was tried to establish temporal patterns for vegatative flush emission, symptom expression, detection of assymptomatic infections. Also, was tried to establish correlations among variables and between them and weather variebles. A comparison by non-parametric tests was made between seasons and regions. Number of new vegetative flushes was the most distinctive variables for regions. The disease related variables (assymptomatic infections, total infection, symptoms and relative bacteria concentration) showed seasonal patterns but no statistical difference was found between seasons. Northwest orchard showed higher number of vegetative flushes. South orchard assymptomatic infections were higher than for the other orchards. There was no difference in relative bacteria concentration between regions.

Abstract: The Asian soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is now considered one of the most important and aggressive diseases of soybean. The main form of control is the scheduled application of fungicides which disregards the the risk of disease occurrence. Epidemiological studies seek to understand the factors that influence the occurrence and development of epidemics, especially those related to the environment such as weather conditions. With the development of information technology and data warehousing, data mining techniques appear to be promising for knowledge discovery in epidemiological databases. This study aims to evaluate the influence of rainfall and temperature on the occurrence of soybean rust by using decision trees models. To accomplish that, data of the occurence of the disease were collected from four seasons, 2007/2008 to 2010/2011, from the Consórcio Antiferrugem and weather data from the Agritempo system. Exploratory data analysis allowed for obtaining subsidies to generate the final data set and define the scope of this work, seeking intrinsic characteristics of the disease and its interaction with the environment, using only meteorological variables. The variables used were related to precipitation and temperature, resulting into nine attributes evaluated in different periods. Such attributes were related to the event of occurrence (Oc) and non occurrence (NaoOc) of the disease (assumed as the thirtieth day prior to the event of occurrence). The results include a predictive model and an interpretive model for classifying events of occurrences and non occurrences of the disease...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic document

The Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC) caused by the bacteria Xylella fastidiosa is nowadays the disease with the most incidence in the state of São Paulo. The incidence and severity of the disease are greater in the Northern and Northwestern regions of the state where the climate is predominately warm and presents a water deficits especially in the winter. Although there is no definite proof, some studies indicate that the water deficits increases the severity of the symptoms in plants affected by the CVC. Besides, up to the present there has not been a function which relates the damage to an intensity of the disease. In that manner, the present study has been conducted in order to evaluate the effect of different irrigation levels on the polyetic progress of the CVC as well as to study methods of assessment of the disease and determine the relationship between disease intensity and yield. In order to carry out this study, an experiment was conducted in the city of Bebedouro north of São Paulo state. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme with the following treatments: no irrigation, irrigated with 50% and 100% of the evapotranspiration of the crop (ETc), combined with natural and artificial inoculation of X. fastidiosa. Each group was made of 6 useful plants, with 4 repetitions for each treatment, totalizing 144 useful plants. The variables quantified in each tree of the experiment were: (a) (a) yield, considering asymptomatic and symptomatic fruit in the period 2006 to 2008 and total yield on the crops from 2001 to 2005; (b) intensity of the disease through incidence of branches with symptoms of CVC and using a descriptive scale; (c) plant vigor, estimated through measure of height, crown diameter, trunk diameter, canopy volume and of the leaf area index (LAI). The monomolecular model was used to describe the polyetic progress of CVC incidence between 2006 and 2008 for all treatments. From this model it was possible to observe that plants without irrigation present greater incidence of branches with symptoms than the ones irrigated at 100% of ETc, especially when inoculated in an artificial manner. This result was even more evident when the number of fruit with symptoms is evaluated (ø < 50mm) of CVC per treatment. It was also possible to observe that the symptoms in the plants are scattered in an irregular way, presenting a significant decreasing rate from the upper to the lower part. Most of the variables related to the plant vigor did not present any relation to the production in all treatments. In general, the plants from the irrigated treatment at 100%of ETc combined with natural inoculation presented more total yield considering the harvests from 2001 to 2008. The relationship between CVC and damage can be described by the equation (y=114,067*exp(-0,017555)*x) where y is the plant yield in Kg and x is the incidence in percentage of branches with CVC. The descriptive scale did not allow accurate assessment and showed a low correlation between the raters, the opposite was observed performing the assessment of CVC through the incidence of branches with symptoms.

Broccoli (Brassica oleraceae var. italica) is one of the most important vegetables in Brazil, whose trading volume in CEAGESP is approximately 13 000 tons per year. Recently, a new disease has caused significant losses in this crop cultivated in the largest producing region of the São Paulo State. The characteristic symptoms of the disease are expressed by plant stunting and necrosis of phloem vessels. Because these symptoms indicate the presence of phytoplasmas in cabbage and cauliflower crops, grown in the same geographical region, it was suspected that the same pathogens could be associated with the affected broccoli plants. Therefore, the total DNA from symptomatic plants of broccoli was analyzed by PCR with specific primers for the 16S rDNA of phytoplasmas. Through the techniques of RFLP and nucleotide sequencing of the same genomic region, the phytoplasmas were identified as belonging to the groups 16SrI, 16SrIII and 16SrXIII. Through RFLP analysis, phytoplasmas were also identified in several species of weeds and leafhoppers in the family Cicadellidae collected in adjacent areas of broccoli fields. Phytoplasmas belonging of the 16SrIII group were identified in the weeds belonging to the species Agetarum conyzoides, Crotalaria lanceolata, Lepidium virginicum, Nicandra physalodes, Paulicourea marcgravii, Ricinus communis, Sida rhombifolia, Sonchus oleraceae, Bidens pilosa, Erigeron bonariensis, Emilia sonchifolia, Leonorus sibiricus, while phytoplasmas of the 16SrVII group were found in the last four mentioned species. In respect to insects, phytoplasmas were detected in individuals from subfamilies Deltocephalinae, Agalliinae and Typhlocybinae. Within the subfamily Deltocephalinae, the leafhopper Balclutha hebe carried phytoplasmas of the 16SrI group, while that of the species Atanus nitidus, Planicephalus flavicosta e Schapytopius fuliginosus harbored phytoplasmas of the 16SrIII group. In the tissues of two leafhoppers of the subfamily Agalliinae and one of the Typhlocybinae, which were not identified as specie, were found phytoplasmas of the 16SrIII group. The epidemiological analysis revelead an aggregated pattern of the diseased plants and a higher progress of the diseased in the border of the broccoli fields, whitch were located nearby areas where the presence of weeds was abundant.

Postbloom fruit drop (PFD), caused by Colletotrichum acutatum, was firstly observed in Belize during 1956-1957 and subsequently reported in 1979. In the same year the disease was also reported in Brazil. PFD causes severe damage when bloom period coincides with rains. The disease is controlled primarily by preventive fungicide sprays. The repeated use of fungicides with the same mode of action can select resistant individuals. The knowledge of PFD epidemiology can generate precise information to develop efficient control strategies and improve the efficacy of chemical control. Thus, this study aimed to: i) characterize the temporal and spatial dynamics of PFD in young sweet orange orchards, ii) evaluate in vitro the baseline sensitivity of C. acutatum to fungicides and, iii) evaluate the efficacy of different fungicides, spray intervals and fungicide application schedule for PFD control. The temporal and spatial PFD-dynamics was characterized in three 2-to-4-year-old orchards with 500 trees each. High daily disease progress rates (r) described by the logistic model of 0.55 were observed after rainfall and prolonged leaf wetness. The spatial pattern of diseased trees varied considerably, initially at random and latter moderately aggregated, suggesting the contribution by other pathogen spread mechanisms, beside rain with wind. There was no correlation between the incidence of diseased flowers and the incidence of persistent calyxes. These calyxes are not important sources of inoculum. In vitro, assays demonstrated that the isolates of C. acutatum from São Paulo State were not resistant to fungicides difenoconazol and carbendazim. In the greenhouse, carbendazim and the trifloxystrobin + tebuconazol mixture showed significant effects when applied prior to inoculation or 24 h after inoculation, however only the mixture was effective 48 h after inoculation. In the field, the fungicide mixture was more effective for PFD control in orchards with high disease incidence. When the proportion of symptomatic flowers reaches 100%, yield reduction can be as high as 70% in Pera sweet orange trees. Frequent sprays may be required during bloom period to control the disease, although sprays were more important when two or more rainy days with prolonged leaf wetness occurs, especially during petals expansion and flowers opening.

Among the main crops in Brazil, sugar cane is affected by several diseases responsible for reductions in yield. Among them, orange rust caused by Puccinia kuehnii, which was recently reported in the country, has deserved special attention by the breeding programs. In this work it were evaluated the monocyclic parameters of orange rust on two different varieties, under two conditions of temperature. Fortydays plants of SP891115 and RB855156 varieties, which are considered respectively susceptible and moderately resistant were inoculated with urediniospores collected from infected plants and kept in wet chamber at 22 °C for 24 hours. Then the plants were transferred to growth chambers with temperatures of 18 °C and 25 °C. Two identical experiments were conducted. Inoculum used in the first experiment was collected on naturally infected plants in the field while for the second experiment it was obtained through artificial inoculations. It were evaluated incubation and latency periods, spores germination and appressoria formation, frequency of infection, pustules size, severity, sporulation and viability of spores produced on each condition. The use of artificially obtained inoculums proved to be more suitable for monocyclic parameters study. Temperature of 25 °C was more suitable for disease development in all variables evaluated. Variety RB 855156 showed higher level of polygenic resistance than variety SP 891115 as revealed by longer incubation and latency periods, as well as by higher infection frequency and pustules area. Variety RB 855156 showed lower levels of infection frequency and pustules area only at 18 °C, revealing that its resistance is influenced by temperature. No effects of sugarcane variety on sporulation or spores viability were observed.

The zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, has a good share of world and brazilian output. However, as in every plants of economically important, cucurbits have problems caused by different etiological agents. In the Brazilian production of zucchini squash, already confirmed the presence of 8 viruses, including the potyviruses PRSV-W (Papaya ringspot virus-type W) and ZYMV (Zucchini yellow mosaic virus) and the tospovirus ZLCV (Zucchini lethal chlorosis virus) have been considered the most important viruses by the predominance in several cucurbits producing regions in the Brazil and the considerable damage on production. Whereas the most of the existing epidemiological studies about these three viruses are few and fragmented, it is clear that there are no studies that deal together all the epidemiological parameters of such viruses. The objectives of this work were to study the temporal and spatial progress of these three viruses and the relation between the epidemiology of these viruses in the same field of zucchini squash in addition to better understand the lethal chlorosis pathosystem (caused by ZLCV). Trials were carried out with zucchini squash \'Caserta in the experimental fields of the Departments of Plant Pathology and Nematology (DPP) and Department of Genetics (DGN) at Esalq/USP. The firsts were conducted in 2009 simultaneously in DPP and DGN to study the epidemiology of lethal chlorosis only and to study the population dynamic of thrips Frankliniella zucchini, the vector of this virus. In 2010 three experiments were carried out in different growing seasons in order to compare the epidemiology of the lethal chlorosis, yellow mosaic and common mosaic caused by ZLCV, PRSV-W and ZYMV, respectively. In the experiments with the lethal chlorosis in 2009, the monomolecular model was the best fit to the incidence data and spatial analysis indicated aggregation of the disease at the end of both experiments. In three experiments carried out in 2010, variations in incidence, in the fit of the model and in the spatial distribution of each virus were frequents. For lethal chlorosis, the monomolecular model provided a better fit only in the 3rd growing season. In the first and second growing seasons Gompertz model had the best coefficient of determination. In the spatial distribution, aggregation of disease was detected at the end of the crop cycle again. For yellow mosaic, the models that best fit in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd planting dates were the logistic and monomolecular (this in the last two) respectively. The spatial pattern of this disease were randomly when the disease incidence was low and aggregated when the disease incidence was high. The common mosaic had the lowest incidence in all three seasons. The logistic model was the best fit in all growing seasons and the disease showed a spatial random distribuctions in all experiments. The thrips vector of ZLCV prefer symptomatic plants and good correlations between the number of insects collected with the incidence of lethal chlorosis was found.

Huanglongbing is the most destructive disease of citrus worldwide. There are few studies on the behavior of Huanglongbing in the Brazilian orchards conditions due to the recent report in Brazil, in 2004. Two bacterial species were associated with the disease in Brazil: Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus and Candidatus Liberibacter americanus. The aims of this work were (i) to compare the efficiency of infection by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus and Candidatus Liberibacter americanus in citrus graft-inoculated plants with both bacterial species, separately, and kept under different temperatures, and (ii) to compare the spatio-temporal progress of Huanglongbing caused by both species, naturally transmitted by Diaphorina citri, having infected citrus plants or Murraya paniculata (jasmine orange) as primary inoculum sources. To achieve the first objective, two experiments were carried out in plant growth chambers with controlled temperature and light. Disease incidence in the inoculated plants was determined by Real-Time PCR of the leaf samples. The milder temperatures were favorable to Candidatus Liberibacter americanus infection, while the higher temperatures did not affect the infection by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. The infection by this latter species was favored by temperatures of 17/22ºC and 22/27°C (night/day, respectively). To achieve the second objective, an experiment was carried out with different sources of inoculum, corresponding to the following treatments: (i) Natal sweet orange plants infected by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus or Candidatus Liberibacter americanus, (ii) only Murraya paniculata plants infected by Candidatus Liberibacter americanus and (iii) only Natal sweet orange plants infected by Candidatus Liberibacter americanus. Each treatment was applied in an isolated compartment of a screenhouse. The first treatment was repeated. In all of the compartments, from 156 to 158 Valencia sweet orange plants were located around the source of inoculum plants. Psyllids free of the bacteria were periodically confined in source of inoculum plants and, after this period, they were set free, and allowed to the free movement and multiplication inside the screenhouse. When both bacterial species were present in the different citrus plants as source of inoculum, there was higher detection of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus than Candidatus Liberibacter americanus and higher acquisition efficiency of the former bacterial species than the later by psyllids. When only Candidatus Liberibacter americanus was present in the source of inoculum plants, the higher transmission efficiency was reached when Murraya paniculata served as source of inoculum, showing that Diaphorina citri can naturally acquire Candidatus Liberibacter americanus from Murraya paniculata and transmit it to citrus plants. The acquisition efficiency of the 14 Candidatus Liberibacter americanus species was higher with Murraya paniculata as source of inoculum than with citrus plants was the source of inoculum.

Sugarcane orange rust, caused by Puccinia kuehnii, was reported for the first time in Brazil in December of 2009. In countries where the disease already occurs, there were related damages around 40%. The objective of this study was: (i) to verify the spore germination under different temperatures in vitro; (ii) to verify the epidemiological aspects of orange rust under different leaf wetness duration and temperatures, in vivo, under controlled conditions; and (iii) to develop risk maps for the disease epidemic for Sao Paulo State. For spore germination, in vitro, water agar was poured on slides and spores suspension was spread on the media and kept under wet chamber for up to 22 h. In the in vitro evaluations, there was recorded the percentage of spore germination and the length of the germ tubes. For the in vivo experiment, pots with one-month-old plants of the susceptible variety CL85-1040 were inoculated and submitted to 36 treatments that represented the interaction of six temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C) and six leaf wetness duration (0, 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 h). This experiment was repeated twice. The severity of the disease was measured counting the number of lesions on the zero leaf. Diameter of lesions was also recorded on the last day of assessment. For the development of risk zones maps for the disease epidemic for Sao Paulo State, we used meteorological data from the years 2002 to 2005. Forecast models were used to create indexes and to calculate the percent of favorable days for the infection. The in vitro experiment shows that the urediniospores germinate at 10, 15, 20 and 25°C. However, the germ tube growth is faster as the temperature increases, reducing the growth as the temperature reaches 25°C or more. In the in vivo experiment, the disease just occurred at 20 and 25°C, and at 25°C the size of the lesions is superior than at 20°C. The incubation and latent period varied from 11 to 16 days, depending on the treatment. The pathogen required at least 8 h of leaf wetness duration for the success of the infection, and the disease was more severe at over 12 h of leaf wetness duration. The most favorable zone for orange rust epidemic in the Sao Paulo State is the North Central area.

Soft Rot, caused by Rhizopus stolonifer, is one of the main postharvest diseases on peaches. The pathogen development is prejudicial to the stone fruit commercialization in wholesale and retail markets and the disease can cause reduction in the price of peaches, being one of the main causes of fruit rejection. The pathogen has been responsible for causing rots in other types of fruit and vegetables, with similar level of losses. The disease is related to the occurrence of mechanical and physical damages and the presence of injuries on the fruit surface contributes to the infection by Rhizopus, which is known as a strictly wound parasite. Few studies have investigated the mechanisms of the pathogen penetration in peaches. Some have concluded that the fungus does not produce enzymes that assist in the direct penetration of fruit. However, observations of disease occurrence on apparently uninjured peaches suggest that direct penetration can occur. Careful management to avoid injuries on the fruit is the most important disease control measure. The objective of this research was to evaluate the penetration mechanisms of R. stolonifer on injured or uninjured peaches and characterize the spatio-temporal progress of Soft Rot on these fruit. To determine the esterase enzymes activity, produced by the pathogen, micelial discs and spore suspensions of R. stolonifer on water or nutrient solution in different incubation periods (0, 4 and 8 hours) were added to indoxyl acetate solution, to observe the presence of crystals of indigo blue color. The treatments with micelial discs or spore suspensions on nutrient solution, after 8 hours of incubation, showed darker shade of blue, because of the production of crystals from the reaction between the esterase enzymes and the indoxyl acetate. Spectrophotometer evaluations were carried out to determine the amount of enzymes produced by R. stolonifer when it was grown on culture media with glucose or cutin, as sole carbon sources. The pathogen was able to grow on both media and higher esterase activity was observed when the fungus was grown on cutin media. Diisopropyl fluorophosphate solution, a cutinase inhibitor, was placed over the fruit and prevented Soft Rot development on peaches inoculated with the fungus spore suspension on nutrient solution. Injured or uninjured peaches were inoculated with R. stolonifer spore suspensions on water or nutrient solution to study the spatiotemporal progress of Soft Rot. Healthy fruit placed next to artificially inoculated peaches showed symptoms of the disease, which has spread with the same rate of progress in all treatments. The infectious process of R. stolonifer on peaches and nectarines was also studied on optic and scanning electron microscopy and direct penetration of intact tissues by the fungus was observed. The results of this work showed that R. stolonifer is capable of direct penetration on uninjured peaches by spores germinated on external nutrient support and by micelial stolons. These structures produce esterase enzymes, especially cutinase, that help in the infectious process.

This work aimed the evaluation of partial resistance and tolerance to soybean asian rust on seven soybean genotypes and 3 lines. The research was conducted at Jataí, GO, during the growing season of 2005/2006. Experiments for partial resistance evaluation were carried out separately from experiments to evaluate tolerance, and in order to have different levels of disease severity, on different soybean growth stages, three trials for each experiment were carried out, each one with a different planting date during the season. Experiments for partial resistance evaluation were arranged on a randomized block design and each experimental unit was made by five soybean lines, 6 m long. The disease severity was estimate on week intervals from the first pustules appearance to the total defoliation. Analyses were done by non linear regression and the logistic model presented the best fitness to the observed data. The early defoliation on cultivars EMGOPA-315, Luziânia, Pintado, Conquista, COODETEC-219 and on lines 1, 2, e, 3 did not allowed the disease progress curves to reach asymptotical stabilization and for such genotypes, just the exponential part of the disease growth could be seen. Epidemics presented an explosive growth and the disease progress curves for such genotypes were similar, suggesting that they were similarly susceptible to the pathogen. The cultivars Tianá e E-313 were the only ones that presented asymptotical stabilization of disease and that happened on severity levels much smaller than 1, what was considered an evidence of partial resistance on those cultivars. Experiments conducted for tolerance evaluation were arranged in a split plot design with five replicates. The main plots (5 soybean rows, 12 m long) were composed by the soybean genotypes and the subplots (5 soybean rows, 6 m long) were those with or without fungicide (tebuconazole 500 mL.ha-1) application for rust control. Disease severity was estimate only once and tolerance was evaluated by the statistical analyses of difference of yield, thousand grain weight and pod and grain numbers, between treated and untreated subplots. None soybean genotypes analyzed presented tolerance to soybean asian rust.

Greening or Huanglongbing (HLB) is the most devastating disease of citrus today. Surveys show that the disease is present in about 60% of the park stands citrus Sao Paulo, demonstrating its great ability to spread. The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psylidae) is an important vector of the causative agents associated with HLB. Its ability to spread is closely related to disease progression in the field. There is no knowledge of the main factors that can affect the movement of the insect to citrus plants. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the influence of some environmental factors on the dispersal of psyllid D. citri, discussing them in relation to the epidemiology of HLB of citrus. Initially tests were performed in the laboratory to adapt the methodology of marking, release and recapture using fluorescent powder. Groups of adult psyllids were marked and their survival assessed by checking the influence of four different colors of fluorescent powder (yellow, blue, pink and green). Subsequent studies were conducted with four field releases psyllids, with distinct markers on four experimental areas adjacent circular and being formed by concentric circles located at 18, 24 and 30 m for each center release. The insects were monitored visually and by yellow sticky traps. In the 1st and 2nd releases, was to determine the effect of cover crops maize (Zea mays L.) and grass (Brachiaria decumbens Stapf.) in the dispersal of D. citri. In the 3rd and 4th releases, were studied the effect of shootings in insect movement. The influence of the wind has been evaluated in both situations. Survival analysis indicated that there was no interference of the four colors of fluorescent powder on D. citri, and marking was visible on the body of insects during the 48 days of evaluation. According to the factor analysis, no interference of vegetation corn (measuring 2 m in height) was observed in the dispersal of the insect. In the presence of shoots, adult D. citri less dispersed looking for new hosts and it accumulate in the first lines of citrus plants. After 6 hours of release, the D. citri maximum dispersal was three times higher in the condition of absence of shoots. The dispersal medium and the total area covered varied asymptotically with time, ie the insect has initially high speed dispersal, but this tends to stabilize with increasing time. These results clearly show that D. citri performs movements depending on the phenology of its hosts, emphasizing the importance of intensifying regional control methods at times when the flow of plant citrus is not intense.

Cauliflower is among the most produced vegetable in the region of the Green Belt of Sao Paulo State. It has high nutritional value and relevant social and economic importance for farmers. In commercial fields, it has been observed plants exhibiting symptoms of stunting, deformation of the inflorescence and conductive vessel necrosis. The disease was named cauliflower stunt and its incidence and severity have become more intense in the past years, the production is being affected and the field is abandoned by the growers. The symptomatology raised the suspect that the disease could be caused by phytoplasmas. Thus, this study aimed to detect and identify phytoplasmas associated to diseased cauliflowers, demonstrate its pathogenicity, look for possible insect vectors of the pathogen and analyse the spatial distributions of disease in the field. Plant samples collected in the region of the green belt or sent from other locations had the total DNA extracted and subjected to PCR reactions. Amplification of genomic fragments of 1.2 kb revealed the presence of phytoplasmas in 66% of the symptomatic plants. The detection of phytoplasmas in asymptomatic plants revealed the occurrence of latent infection and that plants without visible symptoms may be infected. The use of specific primers, conventional and virtual RFLP analysis and phylogenetic analysis allowed the identification of phytoplasmas affiliated to 16SrIII-J, 16SrXIII and 16SrXV-A groups, and predominantly the occurrence of 16SrIII group. Histological sections made by hand of the vascular region of symptomatic cauliflower were observed under light microscope and revealed that the phloem was darkened and with beginning of cellular degeneration. The 16SrXIII phytoplasma was found in Balclutha hebe from cauliflower field. These insects were used in experiments and were able to transmit phytoplasmas to healthy cauliflower and periwinkle. The transmission also occurred from diseased cauliflower to healthy periwinkle through the parasitic plant dodder. Epidemiological analysis of the disease was made in ten plots of cauliflower, located in Sorocaba, SP. Dispersion index, modified Taylors law and isopath areas analysis showed that cauliflower plants with symptoms of stunting were aggregated in field and initial foci were at the edge of the plot. This study demonstrated that cauliflower stunt is associated with phytoplasmas, that may be being transmitted by insects (Homoptera) and, in epidemiological terms, the diseased plants show aggregated pattern of distribution in the field.

Citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, is one of the most important diseases to citrus production. The effect of alternative measures of citrus canker control is very important to areas where plant eradication is the most important measure of control, as in Sao Paulo State, as well as to areas where eradication is not a major component of canker control, as in Parana State. This work aimed to study the progress of citrus canker in field conditions under chemical control, by using copper sprays; and cultural control, by using windbreak. Field plots were installed in a citrus orchard of Pêra sweet orange located in Ourizona county, northwest of Parana State, Brazil. Information regarding the effect of each treatment alone or in combination was assessed. Whereas copper sprays showed significant effect on reducing citrus canker levels, windbreak did not contribute significantly to disease control. After 29 monthly assessments, plants submitted to copper sprays showed values of AUDPC* of citrus canker incidence near to 20 %. This disease level was 44 % lower than that observed to plants not protected with copper compound. The same pattern was observed to disease severity. After 18 monthly assessments, plants sprayed with copper showed values of AUDPC* of disease severity 37 % lower than that observed to plants of the check plots. In 2004, when the citrus canker level was higher, plants treated with copper yielded 54 % more than that not sprayed. In 2005, when the citrus canker level was lower, no significant difference was observed between treatments. In both seasons, plants sprayed with copper showed lower citrus canker incidence on fruits and higher rate of harvested fruits. Among the temporal models tested, the logistic was the most appropriate to describe citrus canker incidence over time in both years studied to all treatments. In both harvests the rate of harvested fruits was the variable that showed the higher coefficient of determination (R2) when related to citrus canker incidence and severity levels.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the leading vegetables grown and consumed in Brazil and in the world, after potato. The importance of tomato is related to its high consumption worldwide and also its nutritive value. Presently the most important virus diseases responsible for yield losses on tomato crops in Brazil are those caused by begomovirus and crinivirus, both transmitted by Bemisia tabaci biotype B. At the moment the prevalent species of begomovirus is Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV). From 2002 to 2004, researchers reported incidence of this virus in more than half of the symptomatic tomato samples collected in several Brazilian states. In 2006, a crinivirus, Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), was reported for the first time in Brazil, infecting tomato plants in the State of São Paulo and at present the virus occurs in several Brazilian states. The objectives of this study were to determine the minimum acquisition and inoculation access periods of ToSRV and ToCV by B. tabaci biotype B; identify the retention period of ToSRV in the insect; and the interaction of ToSRV and ToCV on the transmission by this aleyrodidae. It was also evaluated the effectiveness of the insecticide cartap hydrochloride in controlling the primary and secondary spread of ToSRV by B. tabaci biotype B on tomato plants in a greenhouse. Finally, it was evaluated the efficiency of Trialeurodes vaporariorum in the transmission of a Brazilian isolate of ToCV. The minimum acquisition and inoculation access periods for both viruses by B. tabaci biotype B were five minutes. The maximum retention time of ToSRV in B. tabaci biotype B was 25 days. The efficiency of a single adult of B. tabaci to simultaneously transmit ToSRV and ToCV to tomato plants was 44.7%, similar to the transmission of ToRSV (47.4%), and ToCV (44.7%) separately. T. vaporariorum was less efficient than B. tabaci on the transmission of ToCV. Using 40 insects per pot with two plants, transmission efficiencies were 57.7% and 100%, respectively. The insecticide cartap hydrochloride reduced secondary infection of ToSRV transmitted by B. tabaci biotype B, but was not effective in reducing the primary infection in tomato.

The culture of strawberry , Fragaria x ananassa Duch, has faced several problems, among which we highlight those caused by pathogens. In addition to widely known diseases such as gray mold, new diseases have caused serious damage to the crop. In order to study the various problems of strawberry culture, this study aimed to: i) identify the causal agent of a postharvest fruit rot in strawberry , ii) to study the temporal and spatial dynamics of the redness in strawberry, whose etiology is still unknown; iii) determine the species of Botrytis that cause gray mold in strawberry in Brazil iv) conduct a survey of the current situation of fungicides for control of gray mold on strawberry v) to study the sensitivity of isolates of B. cinerea to dicarboxamide and benzimidazole fungicides. In order to identify the causal agent of post harvest fruit rot of strawberry, isolates from symptomatic fruits were analyzed by morphologic and phylogenetic analyzes. After confirming the pathogenicity of the isolates, species identification as Neofusicoccum kwambonambiense and N. parvum was taken. This is the first report of the occurrence of Neofusicoccum kwambonambiense in Brazil and the first report of Neofusicoccum spp. causing rot in strawberry. By studying the pattern of temporal and spatial distribution of the redness of strawberry was conducted in four areas of commercial cultivation. With the data on incidence of disease progress curves and dispersion maps were constructed, and analysis of aggregation of plants by ordinary runs test. The results showed that the disease has a similar disease biotic distribution pattern similar to diseases which are dispersed in the row. To achieve other goals, isolates were obtained from plants with symptoms of gray mold on various properties of different cities in the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and São Paulo, totaling 200 isolates. Initially, a study was conducted to verify the occurrence of other species of Botrytis in the fields of strawberry cultivation in Brazil. For this, the extraction of DNA from all strains was performed, followed by PCR with the specific species and B. cinerea and B. caroliniana primers. Despite the morphological variation observed among isolates , all were identified as B. cinerea . The survey on the practices used to control gray mold on strawberry was performed directly with the producers, who were asked about the products used for the control of disease, efficiency of these products and use of the practice of removing diseased material . It was possible to observe many problems, especially reduced use of cultural control measures, the use of products not recommended for culture and the low level of knowledge of the farmers. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of the isolated main culture fungicides (iprodione , procymidone and thiophanate- methyl) was carried. Thus, a total of 100 isolates were grown in culture medium containing different doses of the fungicide was used. The results showed that 89% of isolates were insensitive to thiophanate-methyl fungicide, 36% to and 54% to procymidone. Considering the limited number of fungicides registered for the control of gray mold and the low sensitivity of isolates of B. cinerea to these products , it becomes difficult to manage this important disease of strawberry.

Wheat blast, caused by the Triticum pathotype of Magnaporthe oryzae (MoT), is a serious disease of wheat causing yield failures and significant economic losses during epidemic years in Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Although outbreaks occur only sporadically, wheat blast is considered a major disease affecting wheat production in South America and may be a threat to the wheat crop in the United States. Wheat is a major crop in the U.S. and wheat exports from the U.S. are important to food security of several countries around the World. Thus, it is important to understand the potential for MoT entry and establishment into the U.S. and to test U.S. wheat cultivars for susceptibility to MoT. The hypotheses of this research project were a) importing wheat grain from Brazil does not pose a risk for MoT establishment in the U.S., and b) resistance to MoT head infection does not exist in U.S. hard red winter wheat elite cultivars. Quantitative pathway analysis models were used to estimate the risk of MoT entry and establishment, in the coterminous U.S. and in a more targeted area within southeast North Carolina, via the importation of wheat grain from Brazil. The pathway model predicted that significant risk for MoT entry and establishment exists in some areas of the U.S. However, in approximately 60% of the coterminous U.S. winter wheat production areas the risk of MoT establishment was estimated to be zero. With respect to winter wheat growing areas in the U.S., conditions for MoT establishment and wheat blast outbreak occur only in small, restricted geographic areas. A higher resolution pathway analysis based on a ground transportation corridor in North Carolina indicated that conditions for MoT establishment exist seven out of ten years. Among U.S. cultivars tested, a continuum in severity to head blast was observed; cultivars Everest and Karl 92 were highly susceptible with more than 90% disease severity, while cultivars PostRock, Jackpot, Overley, Jagalene, Jagger, and Santa Fe showed less than 3% infection.

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common diseases worldwide and accounts for 18 million deaths annually, which is one-third of all deaths. One risk factor for CVD is type 2 diabetes (T2D). Globally, one in eleven persons has T2D and undetected cases are high. T2D can be hereditary but people can also be susceptible to T2D. The risk factors can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle including physical activity and healthy diet, which can reduce obesity. A protective factor is dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, something that a vegan diet largely contains. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate through two perspectives (primary and secondary prevention) whether a vegan diet reduces the risk of T2D. Methods: A systematic literature review accomplished data collection using two databases, PubMed and the Cochrane Library. The analysis method chosen was content analysis. Results: Of 21 articles reviewed, six different categories emerged: 1) prevention, prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes (vegans are at lower risk of developing T2D); 2) body weight, body mass index (BMI) and body measurements (a vegan diet promotes weight loss, decreased BMI); 3) Blood values and blood pressure (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, HbA1c , glucose, c-peptide, beta cell function and insulin sensitivity are enhanced by a vegan diet); 4) Hormones (GLP-1, GIP, PYY and amylin are optimized by a vegan diet); 5) Metabolism (TMAO decreases and postprandial metabolism is enhanced by vegan diet); and 6) Cholesterol (vegan diet improves LDL, HDL and triglycerides). Conclusion: The results showed that a vegan diet can reduce the risk of type 2-diabetes among adults (≥18 years) at both primary and secondary levels.
