Many planetariums are situated at institutions of higher learning, but there is little documentation about how these facilities are being used. We present an analysis of a survey designed to explore planetarium use in introductory astronomy courses taught to undergraduates. The survey asked about 11 learning objectives, which were chosen through an investigation of online course descriptions at 10 universities in the United States. Planetarium users answered questions about what they are teaching, how long they are teaching it, and what media they are using to teach it. We distributed the survey to approximately 289 institutions around the United States which were categorized as institutions of learning in the online Worldwide Planetariums Database. There were 85 responses to the survey with 78 providing enough information to be useful. Results show that college and university planetariums are primarily being used to teach the night sky and that planetarium users at these institutions prefer to teach through unscripted use rather than scripted shows. We discuss potential implications to content development and further research in instructional methodology.

AbstractInformal science educators at museums and planetariums face the challenging task of engaging a diverse public audience in contemporary science. To do this they need a solid background in the science itself, educational pedagogy, and modern practices in science communication. The task has gotten even more challenging in the era of big data. Interpreting and visualizing these datasets in planetarium shows and museum exhibits requires specialized technical skills. Furthermore, the increasing pace of discovery means that informal science educators have less time to accomplish these tasks. This presentation will summarize a variety of museum and planetarium community efforts to address these challenges through worldwide collaboration and coordination among museums and planetariums. Solutions include content sharing and distribution mechanisms as well as networking museums and planetariums together to create global worldwide events.

Physics teachers are sometimes asked to teach an astronomy course for non-majors. One can’t make that class dance and sing without the starry night, but on a brightly lit campus viewing deep sky objects may seem impossible. Hence instructors often opt for planetarium shows. However: 1) Planetariums aren’t the real thing. 2) People living in large swaths of the United States cannot access one. Nevertheless, thanks to binoculars and small wide-field telescopes, those who teach the heavens can provide both show and substance under light-polluted skies. This article presents a dozen “pitfalls” to avoid.

AbstractThe report shows the current opportunities for obtaining astronomical knowledge in school and outside it, through the use of non-formal education. These are school and extracurricular activities, schools, astronomical competitions and Olympiads, observation expeditions. For 25 years Bulgaria has been participating in the International Olympiads in Astronomy and Astronomy and Astrophysics with National Teams. The role and place of the system of Public Astronomical Observatories and Planetaria in the system of non-formal education in astronomy are discussed (In Bulgaria there are 7 Public astronomical observatories with a planetarium). Specialized activities in their school forms allow the formation of sustainable astronomical knowledge and observational habits.

I am going to start with the premise that planetariums serve several roles in their communities:1. They are popularizers of astronomy and space science2. They support and enhance the teaching of astronomy and related subjects within the formal education system3. They provide a community resource for astronomical informationNot all planetariums incorporate all of these roles or do so to the same degree.Planetariums, as facilities, come in a variety of forms. At one extreme might be a space theater with its wide-format films. A major public facility would have a strong emphasis on public shows and school programming. A college or school facility would emphasize programming for the education system at some or all levels with some or no public programs. At the other extreme would be the small portable planetariums with 100 per cent use for school activities.

Planetarium UIN Walisongo is an educational facility that not only accommodates academic needs but is also projected to become a tourism destination in Semarang. The density of activity is the main focus that must be considered. The building's existence in the middle of the campus also demands that it has good visual access. The study focused on configuration and visibility analysis by looking at their effect on accessibility around the building. The research was conducted using quantitative methods with a descriptive and simulation framework. The simulation process is carried out using a space syntax approach with Depthmap software. Macroanalysis shows that the building is located in the central area with a relatively high integration value. The high intelligence value shows that the spatial configuration is relatively easy to recognize. The wide and integrated road makes this area have relatively high visibility. Microanalysis shows that the pedestrian around the Planetarium is not well connected. Space engineering by connecting pedestrians is carried out to provide better accessibility. Achievement efficiency is the main consideration to produce a high value of integration and visibility around the building. Therefore, the area quality will be better with an accessible space on macro and micro scales

Starting with a group of lightning researchers, planetarium staff, and visualization specialists, an academically diverse group was formed through a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a planetarium show on lightning. The show target audience is middle school aged children. The goal of the show is to teach lightning safety and lightning facts in an immersive environment. Through the use of video, an animated character, and a meteorologist, the curriculum is presented to the audience. I fulfilled the roles of producer and director through all aspects of production. My role also included maintaining group organization and communication throughout show production. This paper discusses my experiences in producing Enlightening Lightning! by starting with outlining the curriculum and finishing with putting it all together at the planetarium. The goal of this paper is to discuss the techniques and organizational methods used to manage a diverse group and produce a multimedia show.

Science presentations for the public in the form of planetarium shows were investigated to track their evolution in terms of length and language, visuals and visual change, the application of learning theory, and tone. Scripts were entered into a word processor and subjected to a readability analysis. Counts of visual change in the shows were tracked and analysed. Concepts presented in the shows were analysed in terms of learning theory. From this information and other aspects of the scripts, the tone of the shows was described. Results indicate that shows have evolved to become more scientifically based, using more complex language and realistic visuals. Visuals are shown to carry more of the burden of communication in modern shows. Modern shows are also more participatory and inclusive, using some, but not all aspects of modern learning theory. This evolution is shown to better appeal to the profile of a typical visitor to a modern science venue.

“The Great Shout of the Universe,” Bradbury’s planetarium scenario for the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, proved too far removed from the more factual presentation that the Smithsonian expected, and the project did not move forward. Chapter 15 shows how Bradbury was able to salvage the concept and have it mounted instead in the Aerospace Museum in Los Angeles as “The Windows of the Universe.” Bradbury went on to compose original verses in the Spanish saeta tradition for “Our Lady Queen of the Angels,” built by Hollywood set designer Tony Duquette and mounted in the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry. Bradbury’s work with the American Film Institute seminars and the George Pal Memorial Lecture concludes the chapter.

This chapter examines how science, and more specifically the real and symbolic force of Soviet space programs, was harnessed as a weapon in Soviet atheist work. In the 1960s, as cosmonauts and astronauts raced to space, the USSR sought to channel cosmic enthusiasm into atheist work, believing that science could deal the final blow to religion. The chapter first considers the explosion of cosmic enthusiasm after successful Soviet space missions before discussing the use of the Moscow Planetarium as a base for natural scientific and scientific atheist propaganda. It also explores state efforts to spread scientific atheism and shows that the Soviets capitalized on Soviet space firsts to proclaim the truth of scientific materialism. However, scientific miracles and cosmic conquests failed to convert the masses to atheism and exposed the ideological blind spots of Marxism–Leninism.

Bradbury’s spring 1980 trip to Washington, D.C. rekindled his relationship with the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum and resulted in a detailed treatment for a new planetarium show titled “The Great Shout of the Universe.” Chapter 14 also documents Bradbury’s day on Capitol Hill with Senator Claiborne Pell and his evening lecture at the Smithsonian’s Baird Auditorium. Bradbury’s summer in France was followed by the release of his hundred-story retrospective collection, The Stories of Ray Bradbury, a collection he compiled with Knopf editor Nancy Nicholas and Knopf president Robert Gottlieb. Chapter 14 concludes with a survey of reviews, with special attention to Thomas M. Disch’s unsettling New York Times piece.

Informal learning environments (ILEs) like museums incorporate multi-modal displays into their exhibits as a way to engage a wider group of visitors, often relying on tactile, audio, and visual means to accomplish this. Planetariums, however represent one type of ILE where a single, highly visual presentation modality is used to entertain, inform, and engage a large group of users in a passive viewing experience. Recently, auditory displays have been used as a supplement or even an alternative to visual presentation of astronomy concepts, though there has been little evaluation of those displays. Here, we designed an auditory model of the solar system and created a planetarium show, which was later presented at a local science center. Attendees evaluated the performance on helpfulness, interest, pleasantness, understandability, and relatability of the sounds' mappings. Overall, attendees rated the solar system and planetary details very highly, in addition to providing open-ended responses about their entire experience.

Data visualization software is commonly used to explore outer space in a planetarium environment, where the visuals of the software is typically accompanied with a narrator and supplementary background music. By letting sound take a bigger role in these kinds of presentations, a more informative and immersive experience can be achieved. The aim of the present study was to explore how sonification can be used as a complement to the visualization software OpenSpace to convey information about the Solar System, as well as increasing the perceived immersiveness for the audience in a planetarium environment. This was investigated by implementing a sonification that conveyed planetary properties, such as the size and orbital period of a planet, by mapping this data to sonification parameters. With a user-centered approach, the sonification was designed iteratively and evaluated in both an online and planetarium environment. The results of the evaluations show that the participants found the sonification informative and interesting, which suggest that sonification can be beneficially used as a complement to visualization in a planetarium environment.
