Our objective was to evaluate the occurrence of mechanical damage in chickpea seeds with the combination of two harvester speeds (2.5 and 3.5 km.h-1) and three adjustments for rotor rotation speeds (500, 700, and 850 rpm). Harvesting was carried out in a seed production field. Seeds were evaluated for purity, germination (G), first count (FC), germination speed index (GSI), hypochlorite, electrical conductivity, and tetrazolium tests. There was an effect of harvester speeds on seed physiological quality for the first count (FC), germination (G), germination speed index (GSI), especially when combining with high rotor rotation speed. In these cases, the speed of 2.5 km.h-1 resulted in lower values. This harvester speed also had worse results when combining with 850 rpm for purity and hypochlorite tests. The tetrazolium test was not efficient in identifying differences in seed quality. There was no significant interaction between harvester speeds and rotor rotation speeds for the conductivity test. Evaluating the harvester speed’s isolated effect (3.5 km.h-1), we identified problems in seed vigor due to the higher value of exudates in the electrical conductivity test. Low harvester speed (2.5 km.h-1) associated with high rotor rotation speeds (700 and 850 rpm) causes a reduction of the physical and physiological quality of seeds.

ABSTRACT The mechanized harvesting of soybean is a fundamental tool in the production process of this crop and, if not performed properly, it can result in severe mechanical damage to the seeds, causing significant losses at harvest, particularly due to reduced quality. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the physical and physiological quality of soybean seeds at three speeds of the harvester, using statistical process control. The experiment was carried out in the municipality of Conceição das Alagoas, MG, Brazil, with three travel speeds: 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5 km h-1. The seed samples were collected at 20 min intervals for 3 h of operation, with a total of 9 samples for each speed. The evaluations were performed based on the following parameters: grain temperature, water content, concave opening, cylinder rotation, mechanical damage and electrical conductivity. The physical and physiological quality of the seeds was dependent on the displacement speed of machine. The highest speed led to lower mechanical damage and higher vigor of soybean seeds.

Rotor Speed is an important factor which impacts the mixing process and quality of mixed rubber greatly. The effects of different rotor speeds on manufacturing process of short fiber-rubber composite material have been studied by experimental study. In the experiments, the rotor speeds were 50rpm, 60rpm, 70rpm and 80rpm respectively. The experimental results indicated that the mixed rubber after vulcanized had better physical and mechanical properties as the rotor speed was 70rpm. So the rotor speed that is 70rpm has been chosen for manufacturing short fiber-rubber composite material.

Abstract The forward-sprint is considered to be, and is regularly performed as, a unique measure of “on-ground” linearspeed performance. Thus far, no investigation has simultaneously studied different forms of linear-speed or investigated whether different forms of linear-speed should be observed as unique performance quality. The purpose of this study was to determine (I) the achievements (i.e. execution time), and (II) the reliability and inter-relationships between various linear-speed performances. The participants were 42 male physical education students with substantial sport-specific backgrounds. We applied a total of six tests: three quadrupedal (supine backward, supine forward, and pronate backward locomotion) and three bipedal-performances (forward sprinting, backward sprinting, lateral shuffling). All of the tests showed appropriate reliability parameters (Cronbach Alpha ranged from 0.91 to 0.97; Inter-Item-R 0.78-0.92; Coefficient-of-Variation 1.3-9.1). The tests used in this study shared between 9% and 50% of the common variance. Our results suggest that different activities require activity-specific tests of linear-speed. This is particularly significant in those sports and activities in which quadrupedal locomotion patterns are highly important (wrestling, physically trained military services, law enforcement, fire and rescue, protective services).

ABSTRACTBackground: Frailty is a complex health state of increased vulnerability associated with adverse outcomes such as disability, falls, hospitalization, and death. Along with physical impairments, cognition and quality of life may be affected in frail older adults. Yet, evidence is still lacking. The aim of this study was to compare frail and non-frail older adults on physical, cognitive, and psychological dimensions. Methods: Thirty-nine frail and 44 non-frail elders were compared on several measures of physical capacity, cognition, and quality of life. Frailty status was based on a geriatric examination and scored using the Modified Physical Performance Test. Results: After controlling for demographic and medical characteristics, physical capacity measures (i.e. functional capacities, physical endurance, gait speed, and mobility) were significantly lower in frail participants. Frail participants showed reduced performances in specific cognitive measures of executive functions and processing speed. On the quality of life dimension, frail elders reported poor self-perceptions of physical capacity, cognition, affectivity, housekeeping efficacy, and physical health. Conclusion: In addition to the reduced physical capacity, frailty might affect selective components of cognition and quality of life. These dimensions should be investigated in intervention programs designed for frail older adults.

The machining of titanium alloys always raises issues because of their peculiar chemical and physical characteristics as compared to traditional steel or aluminum alloys. A proper selection of parameters and their monitoring during the cutting operation makes it possible to minimize the surface roughness and cutting force. In this experimental study, infrared thermography was used as a control parameter of the surface roughness of Ti6A4V in dry finish turning. An analysis of variance was carried out to determine the effect of the main cutting parameters (cutting speed and feed rate) on the surface roughness and cutting temperature. In the examined range of the machining parameters, cutting speed and feed were found to have a primary effect on the surface roughness of the machined parts. Cutting speed also significantly affected the temperature of the cutting region, while feed was of second order. Higher cutting speeds and intermediate feed values gave the best surface roughness. A regression analysis defined some models to relate the cutting temperature and surface roughness to the machining parameters. Infrared thermography demonstrated that the cutting temperature could be related to roughness.

Differences in synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-retrieved hurricane wind speeds from co-polarization and cross-polarization measurements are found to be correlated with rain rate. A quality index is proposed for the SAR-retrieved wind speed product to recognize heavy rain- affected areas by taking account of the different imaging mechanisms of the radar backscattering from the ocean surface via cross-polarization and co-polarization observations. A procedure is proposed to rectify wind retrievals in the rain-contaminated areas within the hurricane core, based on the theoretical physical profile for hurricanes. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology for heavy rain area recognition and wind speed reconstruction in the rain-affected areas is validated against step frequency microwave radiometer measurements from hurricane reconnaissance missions and the hurricane surface wind analysis product (HWIND). The quality flags provide confidence levels of hurricane surface winds from SAR, which together with the proposed method to correct wind retrievals in rain-contaminated areas, can contribute to improved operational applications of SAR-derived winds under hurricane conditions.

This study examines the effectiveness of Texercise Select, a 12-week lifestyle program to improve physical functioning (as measured by gait speed) and quality of life. Baseline and 12-week follow-up assessments were collected from 220 enrollees who were older (mean = 75 years), predominantly female (85%), White (82%), and experiencing multiple comorbidities (mean = 2.4). Linear mixed-models were fitted for continuous outcome variables and GEE models with logit link function for binary outcome variables. At baseline, over 52% of participants had Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) test times of 12 s or more, which indicates below-normal performance. On average, participants showed significant reductions in TUG test scores at the postintervention (11% reduction, p < .001). Participants also showed significant improvements in general health status (p = .002), unhealthy physical days (p = .032), combined unhealthy physical and mental days (p = .006), and days limited from usual activity (p = .045). Findings suggest that performance indicators can be objectively collected and integrated into evaluation designs of community-based, activity-rich lifestyle programs.

AbstractBackgroundChildren with cerebral palsy (CP) have decreased gait speeds, which can negatively affect their community participation and quality of life. However, evidence for effective rehabilitation interventions to improve gait speed remains unclear.PurposeThe purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of interventions for improving gait speed in ambulatory children with CP.Data SourcesMEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, and PEDro were searched from inception through April 2014.Study SelectionThe selected studies were randomized controlled trials or had experimental designs with a comparison group, included a physical therapy or rehabilitation intervention for children with CP, and reported gait speed as an outcome measure.Data ExtractionMethodological quality was assessed by PEDro scores. Means, standard deviations, and change scores for gait speed were extracted. General study information and dosing parameters (frequency, duration, intensity, and volume) of the intervention were recorded.Data SynthesisTwenty-four studies were included. Three categories of interventions were identified: gait training (n=8), resistance training (n=9), and miscellaneous (n=7). Meta-analysis showed that gait training was effective in increasing gait speed, with a standardized effect size of 0.92 (95% confidence interval=0.19, 1.66; P=.01), whereas resistance training was shown to have a negligible effect (effect size=0.06; 95% confidence interval=−0.12, 0.25; P=.51). Effect sizes from negative to large were reported for studies in the miscellaneous category.LimitationsGait speed was the only outcome measure analyzed.ConclusionsGait training was the most effective intervention in improving gait speed for ambulatory children with CP. Strength training, even if properly dosed, was not shown to be effective in improving gait speed. Velocity training, electromyographic biofeedback training, and whole-body vibration were effective in improving gait speed in individual studies and warrant further investigation.

Objectives: This study explored the: i) correlations between the Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest) and its short-versions (Mini-BESTest and Brief-BESTest), with functional ability, gait speed, physical activity, and health-related quality of life; ii) ability of the Five Times Sit to Stand (5STS), 10 Meter Walk Test (10MWT), Brief Physical Activity Assessment Tool (BPAAT) and World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQoL-Bref) to identify the prior history of falls in community-dwelling older people. Methods: An exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted with healthy older people living in the community. Balance (BESTest and its short versions), functional ability (5STS), gait speed (10MWT), physical activity (BPAAT), and health-related quality of life (WHOQoL-Bref) were assessed. Spearman correlation coefficient and receiver operating characteristics analysis were calculated. Results: One hundred and eighteen individuals (76[69-83.3] years; n=79, 66.9% female) participated in this study. Correlations between balance and functional ability (-0.61< r < -0.51, p<0.001), gait speed (0.69 < r < 0.78, p<0.001), physical activity (0.39 < r < 0.42, p<0.001) and health-related quality of life (0.28 < r < 0.57, p≤0.002) were identified. The following cutoff points to differentiate between prior history of falls were established: 80.5 points for the BESTest, 16.5 points for the Mini-BESTest and 12.5 points for the Brief-BESTest, 13.5s for the 5STS, 1.2m/s for the 10MWT, 1.5 points for the BPAAT and 14.5/66; 14.5/66; 14/62.5; 15.5/72 points for domains I, II, III and IV, respectively, of the WHOQoL-Bref 0-20/100. Conclusion: The BESTest and its short versions correlated with functional ability, gait speed, physical activity, and health-related quality of life in older people. These outcomes can differentiate prior history of falls in community-dwelling older people.

Dietary habits have been linked with health in childhood. However, few studies have examined the association between healthy dietary patterns and physical fitness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the associations of adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern (MDP) and breakfast quality with physical fitness in children. Further to this, we examined the role of physical activity in these associations. A total of 175 children (86 girls, 9.7 ± 0.3 years) participated. Adherence to MDP and breakfast quality were assessed by the KIDMED questionnaire and 24 h recall, respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, and speed–agility were assessed. Physical activity was evaluated by wrist-worn accelerometers. Greater adherence to the MDP was related with higher cardiorespiratory fitness, lower-limbs muscular strength, and speed–agility (all β ≥ 0.189, all p ≤ 0.02). No significant associations were observed between breakfast quality and physical fitness (all p > 0.05). However, all the significant associations disappeared after adjusting for physical activity (all p > 0.05). Our study sheds light on the relevance of adhering to the MDP over physical fitness in school children. However, there is no association between breakfast quality and physical fitness. Furthermore, physical activity seems to explain, at least partially, these findings.

We sought to examine the relationship between frailty and health-related quality of life as evaluated using the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire in Japanese chronic liver disease (CLD) patients (n = 341, 122 liver cirrhosis cases, median age = 66 years). Frailty was defined as a clinical syndrome in which three or more of the following criteria were met (frailty score 3, 4, or 5): unintentional body weight loss, self-reported exhaustion, muscle weakness (grip strength: <26 kg in men and <18 kg in women), slow walking speed (<1.0 m/s), and low physical activity. Robust (frailty score 0), prefrail (frailty score 1 or 2), and frailty were found in 108 (31.7%), 187 (54.8%), and 46 (13.5%) patients, respectively. In all eight scales of the SF-36 (physical functioning, role physical, bodily pain, general health perception, vitality, social functioning, role emotion, and mental health), and the physical component summary score and mental component summary score, each score was well stratified according to the frailty status (all p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, age (p = 0.0126), physical functioning (p = 0.0005), and vitality (p = 0.0246) were independent predictors linked to the presence of frailty. In conclusion, Japanese CLD patients with frailty displayed poorer conditions, both physically and mentally.

Abstract Background Timely blood delivery to patients with critical bleeding poses logistic challenges. A modern, high speed hospital pneumatic tube system (PTS) is one solution, but blood units may be subjected to high-speed torque and acceleration/deceleration forces. Objective To validate a new PTS system for potential use at our 1,400-bed hospital in Singapore. Method Our validation included red blood cells, platelets, thawed plasma, and cryoprecipitate units transported from the blood bank for a distance of 820 meters (PTS track), at a velocity of 3–6 meters per second. Transit time, temperature, bag integrity, and blood quality were assessed visually and through analytical testing on pre- and post-PTS specimens. Results Blood units arrived physically intact in less than 8 minutes. The temperature for each was within the acceptable range. Comparative testing of pre-PTS and post-PTS specimens showed no significant difference in physical quality and analyzed parameters (P> .05). Conclusions High speed PTS transportation of blood components has satisfactory fidelity and speed, without significant impact on quality. As a result, we incorporated PTS blood delivery into the hospital massive-transfusion protocol and successfully operationalized that new system.

Abstract Tire nonuniformity may affect vehicle ride comfort quality especially while vehicles are running at highway speeds. Spindle force variations in the radial, tangential, and lateral directions are normally used as parameters evaluating tire high speed uniformity performance. An interesting physical phenomenon—directionality of tangential force variation has been observed for many tires. The directionality of tangential force variation means that tangential force variation is different when a tire is measured in the clockwise and counter-clockwise directions under the same test conditions. In this paper, a theory is developed to explain the interesting physical phenomenon. Simulation and analysis are conducted using a dynamic tire model. It is found that the directionality of tangential force variation is caused by the interaction of different types of nonuniformities in tires such as mass and geometry variations.

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is a layer-by-layer Additive Manufacturing (AM) process that creates physical metal parts from three dimensional Computer Aided Design (CAD) data. For DMLS to be generally accepted by industry as a manufacturing technology, high mechanical integrity of final components needs to be demonstrated. Mechanical properties of manufactured components are directly affected by the quality of each individual laser sintered track of each consecutive layer. In this study, the optimal ratio of laser power and scanning speed on single tracks is determined for Titanium-6Al-4V powder on an EOSINT M270 DMLS machine for a layer thickness that varies between 15 μm and 30 μm. Two different laser powers, namely 150 W and 170 W were considered. Scanning speeds varied between 600 mm/s to 2000 mm/s with 200 mm/s intervals. The most stable tracks resulted from high laser power, slow scanning speed and thin powder distribution. The empirical data were compared to a melt pool width prediction program, which was found to underestimate track width at all scanning speeds and re-melting depth at low scanning speeds. Further, it was found that decreased powder thickness can be used with an increased scanning speed and high laser power. This strategy may be used to increase surface quality. The penetration data during fusion of the tracks onto the building platform further validates the quality of each sintered track.

Abstract The main idea of the work is to create a physical model of high speed broaching heat-resistant materials is used to study the parameters of the surface layer quality. Modelling is a method of mediated cognition, in which the object under study is in some correspondence with the model, and the object-model is capable in some way or another to replace the original at some stages of the cognitive process. Physical modelling is primarily distinguished by the fact that studies are conducted on models with physical similarity, i.e. preserving completely (or at least partially) the nature of the phenomena. The work of the broach can be likened to the work of a number of planning cutter displaced relative to each other by a small amount, which is called lifting (feed per tooth). Therefore, for experimental work, a planning cutter of a special geometric was designed and manufactured – a physical model of a broach, in which geometric, mechanical and dynamic similarity is realized. The article also presents an experimental justification for the use of the created physical model in the study of the surface quality parameters of the, tab grooves of turbine and compressors disks made of heat-resistant materials.

The use of herbicides to anticipate harvesting in species with easy seed dehiscence may be an alternative to avoid maturation losses. However, the appropriate time for herbicide application is extremely important as it prevents the seeds from remaining in the field for long periods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the application of maturing herbicides in two distinct seasons, and their effects on the physical, physiological, and sanitary quality of canola seeds. A randomized block experimental design arranged in a factorial scheme (herbicide x season + control) with four replications was used. Hybrid 50 canola plants were matured with the herbicides: glufosinate, paraquat, glyphosate, diquat, saflufenacil, 2,4-D, and paraquat + diuron twice during the crop cycle, G3 and G4, and two controls without application for each epoch, with the first being harvested the day of product application, and the second kept in the field until the final crop cycle. Analyses of one thousand seed weight, electrical conductivity, emergence speed index, and a sanity test were performed. The application of maturing herbicides to canola increases the one thousand seed weight and rate of emergence speed. At the same time, it increases electrical conductivity and the incidence of fungi. Plants that remained in the field until the end of the crop cycle and did not receive herbicide application resulted in higher quality seeds. The most appropriate moment to apply maturation herbicides to canola is in the G4 season.

Walking is often prescribed as a mode of physical activity for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). We and others have found that although people with T2D may increase the amount that they walk (e.g., more steps per day), improvements in key health outcomes are rarely achieved. We agree that walking is an acceptable approach for people with T2D to meet current clinical practice guidelines, but consideration of both the total number of daily steps and the walking speed of a portion of those total daily steps are necessary to gain health benefit.

Abstract Background: Hypertension is one of the commonest chronic cardiovascular diseases in older adults. Frailty and hypertension often coexist in older people, but few studies have explored frailty in older hypertensive adults. We aimed to explore the correlation of frailty with quality of life in older hypertensive adults. Method: We enrolled 291 patients with hypertension aged ≥60 years. Ambulatory blood pressure monitor was performed. Physical frailty was assessed by Fried phenotype. Quality of life was assessed by SF-36. Results: Forty-eight (16.5%) patients were frail. Compared with non-frail older hypertensive patients, frail patients were older, had lower education levels, a higher rate of living alone, and a longer duration of hypertension. Moreover, they had lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP), and higher pulse pressure, more chronic diseases, a higher proportion of calcium channel blockers (CCBs) usage, and worse quality of life. Frailty scores were positively correlated with pulse pressure, and negatively correlated with DBP and MAP. The SF-36 score was negatively correlated with frailty scores and positively correlated with grip strength and walking speed. After adjusting for age, the SF-36 score was negatively correlated with frailty and positively correlated with walking speed. Frailty, when adjusted for age, duration of hypertension, DBP and comorbidity, had a significant effect on the SF-36 score. Conclusion: Frailty was associated with worse quality of life of older adults with hypertension. Frailty prevention and intervention may help improve the quality of life of older hypertensive adults. Abstract Previous work from our group (Friedman, 2016) linked sleep complaints to declines in mobility and risk of incident limitations over a 9-10 year follow-up among middle-aged and older adults. While these results suggest that poor sleep might undermine functional capacity, the self-report nature of the data leaves the robustness of this association unclear. The current study addressed this uncertainty by examining links between sleep and mobility limitations using subjective and objective assessments of both. Data were from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study: the biomarker sub-sample (N = 664) from the original cohort (collected 2004-2006) and the Refresher cohort (collected 2011-2013). Sleep was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; subjective) and 7 consecutive days of actigraphy (objective). Functional capacity was assessed by self-report of limitations and measured gait speed, grip strength, and chair stands. In linear regression models adjusting for demographic and health factors, lower PSQI scores (better sleep quality) predicted fewer reported limitations, stronger grip, quicker gait, and faster chair stands (all p<.01). Of the objective sleep metrics, time to fall asleep and time spent awake during the night predicted more self-report limitations, weaker grip (latency only), and slower gait speed and chair stands. These results extend our prior work by showing a) subjective sleep is linked to measured as well as self-reported physical function, and b) objective assessments of sleep predict reduced physical function, albeit to a lesser extent. They also brighten the spotlight on sleep as a key health determinant in older adults.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is useful for manufacturing complex structures; however, factors affecting the forming quality have not been clearly researched. This study aimed to clarify the influence of geometric characteristic size on the forming quality of solid struts. Ti–6Al–4V struts with a square section on the side length (0.4 to 1.4 mm) were fabricated with different scan speeds. Micro-computed tomography was used to detect the struts’ profile error and defect distribution. Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy were used to characterize the samples’ microstructure. Nanoindentation tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties. The experimental results illustrated that geometric characteristic size influenced the struts’ physical characteristics by affecting the cooling condition. This size effect became obvious when the geometric characteristic size and the scan speed were both relatively small. The solid struts with smaller geometric characteristic size had more obvious size error. When the geometric characteristic size was smaller than 1 mm, the nanohardness and elastic modulus increased with the increase in scan speed, and decreased with the decline of the geometric characteristic size. Therefore, a relatively high scan speed should be selected for LPBF—the manufacturing of a porous structure, whose struts have small geometric characteristic size.

Abstract Objectives A healthy diet has been linked to better physical function in older adults but evidence on the role of cumulative dietary exposure is scarce. Sex differences in the relationship are also underexplored. The objective was to explore the longitudinal association of diet quality in adulthood (from 36–64 y), in line with dietary guidelines, and walking speed as an objective measure of later life physical function. Methods Study sample was derived from the Insight 46 (n = 502), a neuroscience sub-study of the longitudinal National Survey of Health and Development, UK. Diet was assessed four times, at age 36 y, 43 y, 53 y and 60–64 y using five-day food diaries, from which the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI) was calculated (0 - low quality, 100 - high quality). Walking speed was estimated in a 10-meter walk test at self-selected pace, using an inertial measurement unit at age 69–71 y. Linear mixed models with random effects and group-based trajectory modeling were used to assess individual and group changes in HEI in adulthood. Multivariable linear regression models with sex as modifier, controlling for multiple characteristics assessed the association between adulthood HEI trajectories and walking speed at 71 y. The final sample was 226 women and 230 men. Results Men and women improved diet quality linearly in adulthood (β: 0.6 HEI/y, 95% CI: 0.5, 0.7). Three linear HEI trajectories were identified (21% “Low” βo: 33, β: 3.6; 59% “Medium” βο: 38, β: 6.1; 20% “High” βο: 52, β: 5.5, P < 0.001). Women had faster increase rates, higher HEI at each age (β: 4 HEI points, 95% CI: 3, 6) and were more likely to belong to the “High” HEI trajectory than men (β: 1.97, P < 0.001). There was no overall association but in women a 10 point increase in predicted HEI trajectory and membership in the “High” vs “Medium”-“Low” HEI trajectories were associated with faster walking speed (β: 0.04 m/s, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.08, β: 0.06 m/s, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.11, respectively). Association was attenuated in multivariable models. No association was observed in men. Conclusions In women, higher diet quality in adulthood was associated with faster walking speed in later life. Achieving and maintaining high diet quality in adulthood is likely of importance to yield benefits in physical function. The green algae Ulva faciata was subjected to different physical pretreatments comprising thermal and mechanical techniques at different experimental conditions to state the most appropriate method of cell disruption for increasing the quantity of the extracted lipid and hence improve the quality of the produced biodiesel with low cost. Thermal pretreatment was autoclaving of either wet or dry algal biomass, while mechanical pretreatments include microwave and ultrasonication at different time intervals. The control was the alga without pretreatment extracted at optimum conditions: 60 min, 55oC, shaking speed at 250 rpm, < 0.16 mm particle size with 25:1 v/w solvent to solid ratio. The results showed that the quantity of extracted lipids in case of using all physical pretreatments increased the Total fatty acids yield significantly by about 2-folds of the control for wet algae in hydrothermal treatment with optimum time of treatment 40 minutes, and 1.4 folds for dry algae in thermal pretreatment of the dried alga for 60minutes autoclaving period. The sharp increase by 2.2 folds of extracted lipids was recorded by microwave pretreatment for radiation period (5 min), while ultrasonication showed 2.1-fold increase in lipid yield at 15minutes ultrasound exposure time. Concerning the physical properties of the produced biodiesel after all physical pretreatments, the results indicated that the produced biodiesel had very high quality as all its properties are almost complied with the ASTM D6751 and EN14214 standards. These results were confirmed statistically where all physical pretreatments had high significant effect on fatty acids yield and Biodiesel properties.

The article considers the scientific foundations of the pedagogical approach to the study and development of speed qualities, in particular, the reaction speed and functional capacities of a person who provides professional training of police officers and athletes. During the research, the features of the speed qualities development, in particular the speed of reaction, were studied by means of physical training, with the help of which it is possible to achieve maximum speed of response, and, on this basis, to form stable skills for counteraction in emergency situations related to service-applied activities. A set of factors determining the speed of response to an external signal is considered. Methods for the growth of speed in the training process serve as the basis for the progress of this quality in relation to the operational and service activities of police officers. The article presents the most effective methods of speed development, aimed both at improving this physical quality, and contributing to the formation of the necessary motor skills for the successful fulfillment of operational-service tasks and for competing. Speed qualities are complex in their structure, including the time of the motor reaction, the speed of a single movement, the frequency of movements, etc. These complexity and diversity should be taken into account during the training of high-speed abilities of police officers for actions in extreme situations of operational and service activities, and a special emphasis on the acquisition and development of new motor skills and abilities should be made.

Abstract Prior studies link specific sleep parameters to physical functioning in older adults. Recent work suggests the utility of examining sleep health from a multidimensional perspective, enabling consideration of an individual’s experience across multiple different sleep parameters (e.g., quality, duration, timing). We examined the associations of multidimensional sleep health with objective, performance-based measures of physical functioning in older adults. We conducted a secondary analysis of 158 adults (Mage=71.8 years; 51.9% female) who participated in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) 2 and MIDUS Refresher studies. We used data from daily diaries, wrist actigraphy, and self-report measures to derive a composite multidimensional sleep health score ranging from 0-6, with higher scores indicating better sleep health. Physical function was assessed using gait speed during a 50-foot timed walk, lower extremity strength as measured by a chair stand test, and grip strength assessed with dynamometers. We used hierarchical regression to examine the associations between sleep health and gait speed, lower extremity strength, and grip strength. Age, sex, race, education, depression symptoms, medical comorbidity, and body mass index were covariates in each model. In adjusted analyses, better multidimensional sleep health was significantly associated with faster gait speed (B=.03, p=.01). Multidimensional sleep health was not significantly associated with lower limb strength (B=-.12, p=.89) or grip strength (B=.45, p=.40). Gait speed is a key indicator of functional capacity as well as morbidity and mortality in older adults. Multidimensional sleep health may be a therapeutic target for improving physical functioning and health in older adults.

Assessments included demographics, 400-m walk, timed chair stands, and health-related quality of life using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29). Women were classified as active if they had ≥500 metabolic equivalent·min/week by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey (n = 103, 34.7%), or ≥150 weekly minutes of greater than or equal to moderate intensity activity by accelerometry (n = 222, 74.8%). Ordinal logistic regression models adjusted for age, comorbidities, and body mass index were calculated. Meeting activity guidelines per self-report was associated with perceptions of less fatigue and greater satisfaction with social roles, whereas meeting guidelines as measured by accelerometry was associated with faster gait speed.

AbstractHealthy diet has been linked to better age-related functioning, but evidence on the relationship of diet quality in late midlife and measures of physical capability in later life is limited. Research on potential sex differences in this relationship is scarce. The aim was to investigate the prospective association between overall diet quality, as assessed by the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) at 60–64 years and measures of walking speed 7 years later, among men and women from the Insight 46, a neuroscience sub-study of the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development. Diet was assessed at 60–64 years using 5-d food diaries, from which total HEI-2015 was calculated. At 69–71 years, walking speed was estimated during four 10-m walks at self-selected pace, using inertial measurement units. Multivariable linear regression models with sex as a modifier, controlling for age, follow-up, lifestyle, health/social variables and physical performance, were used. The final sample consists of 164 women and 167 men (n 331). Women had higher HEI-2015 and slower walking speed than men. A 10-point increase in HEI-2015 was associated with faster walking speed among women (B 0·024, 95 % CI 0·006, 0·043), but not men. The association remained significant in the multivariable model (B 0·021, 95 % CI 0·003, 0·040). In women, higher diet quality in late midlife is associated with faster walking speed. A healthy diet in late midlife is likely to contribute towards better age-related physical capability, and sex differences are likely to affect this relationship.

The aim of this study was to define the influence of treatments with different seed spray volumes and their effects on the physical and physiological quality. The soybean seeds from cultivars NA 5909 RG and BMX Potência RR were used and three lots of each cultivar were selected in sieves of different diameters (5.5; 6.0 and 6.5 mm). The treatments consisted of different seed volumes: 1) non-treated seeds; 2) 600 mL.100 kg of seeds-1; 3) 800 mL.100 kg of seeds-1; 4) 1000 mL.100 kg of seeds-1; 5) 1200 mL.100 kg of seeds-1; 6) 1400 mL.100 kg of seeds-1. The physical parameters evaluated were mechanical damage, water content and variations in the length and width of the seeds. The physiological seed quality was determined by germination, first count germination, length and dry weight of seedlings, field emergence and emergence speed index tests. In terms of use of the product in liquid form, it is possible to use the treatment in spray volumes up to 1400 mL.100 kg seed-1, regardless the cultivar or seed size and without damaging the soybean seeds physically and physiologically.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of a new basketball program for healthy male students at Saigon University when compared with the current basketball election classes in the physical education program. 64 healthy male students were chosen and randomly divided into two groups (experimental and control groups). All participants have experienced the 15-week training in basketball court at Saigon University every Wednesday morning. The results of the study indicated that a new basketball program had a positive improvement on speed, agility, power of leg, and maximum aerobic speed, except the core strength. Therefore, a new basketball program could facilitate greater enhancements, gave more benefits than the current program, created a healthy environment in studying physical education, and suited the enhancing training needs of male students at Saigon University. Future studies should be clarified the impact of that program for female students, for other types of sports, in line with the classification of participants, i.e., less exercise, long-term training, and high level in training of students.

Part 2 of this paper focuses on the explanation, both on theoretical grounds and through model simulations, of why the technique of variable spindle speed machining is an effective tool for increasing the quality and productivity of machining operations. In particular, Part 2 explains why, by disturbing the regenerative and forced vibration excitation frequencies which generate large amplitudes of vibration during constant speed machining, variable speed machining has the potential to reduce the vibration of the tool-work system and be robust with respect to the cutting process dynamics. The explanation is based on the work done by the cutting forces, the chip load variation, tool-work displacements, cutting forces, and workpiece surface error generated by both constant and variable speed machining. By investigating the effects of regeneration and forced vibration during variable speed machining on the vibration of tool-work systems having different cutter diameter-to-workpiece width ratios, it has been shown that variable speed machining is also robust with respect to the geometry of the tool-work system. This work concludes that variable speed machining is safer to use than constant speed machining when the effects of the tool-work dynamics and geometry on the vibration of the cutting process are hard to determine.

There is a lack of guidelines for physical exercise in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). A few pilot studies have shown that exercise can be safely applied to patients with MG. However, how physical exercise affects body composition, disease function, and disease severity remains unknown. In this prospective study, we enrolled 34 patients with MG with stable condition and evaluated the disease severity, physical fitness parameters, and body composition (measured using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)), before and after conducting a 24-week physical exercise regimen of aerobic and resistance strength training. The outcomes were measured by DXA, quantitative MG (QMG) score, quality of life score, handgrip strength and walking speed. During the training regimen, participants were free to decide how many exercise sessions per week and regularly reported their weekly exercise time. The physical exercise program was well tolerated by the participants, the parameters of the QMG score and handgrip strength improved, and participants’ body composition did not change significantly. The high exercise group experienced greater deterioration in muscle mass in the arms, but exhibited a greater improvement in forced vital capacity, walking speed, and symptom severity. The group with low QMG scores improved more in terms of physical fitness, including walking speed. These findings indicate that physical exercise is well tolerated by patients with MG, and is accompanied by improved muscular and physical functions. We propose that physical exercise is safe, effective, and appropriate for patients with well-regulated MG.

The article examines the empirical studies of the influence of increasing statokinetic stability on other physical qualities of 6-7 years-old sportsmen of the initial training group. The relevance of the work is determined by the significant rejuvenation of many sports and the need to increase statokinetic stability in young school age, which is sensitive to increase this important quality where the basic static, dynamic and spatiotemporal parameters of children's movements are formed. The static and dynamic balance indicators after dosed vestibular irritations were used to determine statokinetic stability and how they affect the flexibility, agility, speed, strength and static endurance, and speed and physical qualities of children. Although, statokinetic stability and almost all other physical qualities were low before the pedagogical experiment. All the physical qualities of sportsmen, both girls and boys, significantly improved after a six-month experiment. All beginning sportsmen showed good and excellent results, both statokinetic stability, and other physical qualities, except the speed and physical qualities of boys who showed average (satisfactory) estimates, according to state standards. It is also important that sportsmen who systematically attended training stopped being sick. The results of the study may be useful for coaches of primary school sportsmen and physical education teachers in general schools.

The objective of this study was to investigate effects of Spirulina meal (SM) inclusion in fish feed formulations on their physical and protein content. Four formulations of fish feed were carried out i.e. a control diet with fishmeal (FM) as the single protein source and three others formulations containing Spirulina meal (SM) ingredient in different ratios of FM: SM (w/w) namely 75:25; 50:50 and 25:75 (w/w). All the formulations were processed into pellets using an extruder with a 600 rpm screw speed, 100 °C barrel temperature, and 3 mm diameter of dies. The dried pellets were then evaluated with respect to the protein content and physical properties i.e. expansion ratio, unit density, floatability and hardness. In general, the most optimum pellet formulation was found at the ratio of 25:75 (FM: SM) ingredients resulted in pellet with higher protein (38.89%) and expand ratio (1.65 fold), the lowest unit density (0.473 mg/mm3), the highest floatability (100%) and less hardness (32.53 N). Therefore, formulation of floating fish feed included with Spirulina are an option for improving its protein content and physical properties.

Present serviceability index (PSI) modeling has been an important subject for decades. Other dynamic indexes characterizing a roadway such as the international roughness index (IRI), averaged rectified slope (ARS), and averaged rectified speed (ARV) have been proposed and studied. However, the roles played by these indexes in the interaction between road, vehicle, and human ratings have not been made clear. A unified physical model linking the static profile of a roadway and the dynamic response of a vehicle to the profile to the serviceability index of the roadway is presented here. Analytical expressions for jerk index, acceleration index, ARV, ARS, and IRI are derived from the developed model in terms of the physical parameters for roadways and the dynamic characteristics of a vehicle. Then a linear relation between the PSI and the logarithm of the jerk index is proposed. Using the jerk index computed from field profile data, the linear functional form for the PSI is verified, and regression R2 values higher than 0.94 are obtained for various types of pavements. The same analysis is performed for other dynamic indexes, and the R2 values are found to be approximately in the range from 0.70 to 0.80. These results indicate that the theoretical model correctly predicts and explains the human rating of ride quality and that the jerk experienced by raters in a moving vehicle dictates the ratings. Moreover, the relationship of the static parameters of roadway profiles with human ratings is discussed using the conventional approach.

This paper provides a detailed analysis on the systematic innovation process in improving the quality control of latex gloves production. The systematic innovation tool such as TRIZ is applied in this case study. Function analysis, cause and effect chain analysis, physical contradiction, By-separation model and 40 Inventive Principles are applied in order to derive some feasible and low cost solutions to alleviate the problem. Findings revealed that the rejected (leaking) gloves on the production line will be manually monitored by a checker during the air blowing test and will be discarded by the same checker instantly. The main root cause is that the quality control worker is not able to concentrate all the times to detect the torn gloves, mainly is due to the fast speed production line and other distractions. The problem is solved by applying function analysis, physical contradiction, by-separation tool and Inventive Principles to generate low cost but elegant solutions within the defined scope of several constraints and without making the production line more complex. Therefore, it can be concluded that TRIZ is a systematic and innovative problem solving methodology.
