The thesis follows the development of an advanced solar photovoltaic power conversion system from first principles. It is divided into five parts. The first section shows the development of a circuit-based simulation model of a photovoltaic (PV) cell within the 'SABER' simulator environment. Although simulation models for photovoltaic cells are available these are usually application specific, mathematically intensive and not suited to the development of power electronics. The model derived within the thesis is a circuit-based model that makes use of a series of current/voltage data sets taken from an actual cell in order to define the relationships between the cell double-exponential model parameters and the environmental parameters of temperature and irradiance. Resulting expressions define a 'black box' model, and the power electronics designer may simply specify values of temperature and irradiance to the model, and the simulated electrical connections to the cell provide the appropriate I/V characteristic. The second section deals with the development of a simulation model of an advanced PVaware DC-DC converter system. This differs from the conventional in that by using an embedded maximum power tracking system within a conventional linear feedback control arrangement it addresses the problem of loads which may not require the level of power available at the maximum power point, but is also able to drive loads which consistently require a maximum power feed such as a grid-coupled inverter. The third section details a low-power implementation of the above system in hardware. This shows the viability of the new, fast embedded maximum power tracking system and also the advantages of the system in terms of speed and response time over conventional systems. The fourth section builds upon the simulation model developed in the second section by adding an inverter allowing AC loads (including a utility) to be driven. The complete system is simulated and a set of results obtained showing that the system is a usable one. The final section describes the construction and analysis of a complete system in hardware (c. 500W) and identifies the suitability of the system to appropriate applications.

This report describes a computer program which has been developed to simulate accurately the performance of stand alone photovoltaic systems with battery storage on an hourly basis for one simulated year. The program incorporates models of the POA irradiance, the photovoltaic cell · temperature and the battery temperature to simulate the environmental conditions of the system. These require hourly weather data as input. Typical meteorological years, which constitute a suitable form of input weather data, have been generated for those weather stations in Southern Africa which contain sufficient data. The energy flows within the system are simulated using models of the following parameters: photovoltaic module current, regulator efficiency and voltage, battery current and voltage, inverter efficiency, load shed voltage and load current. These models incorporate versatility in the level of modelling complexity (determined typically by the availability of the data used to characterise the components). The various models are encapsulated in modular units to facilitate alteration and updating at a later stage. The program is designed to simulate photovoltaic systems without maximum power point trackers, necessitating the use of interactive curve solving to compute the system operating point at any time. A robust and comprehensive algorithm has been implemented to execute this function. Improved battery modelling has been effected using data and experience acquired from a parallel research project. The program facilitates, with the judicious selection of input weather data, the economical sizing of systems in that it incorporates loss of power probability analysis and offers a high level of modelling precision. The simulation performance of the program compared favourably with that of PVFORM. The system performance estimated by PVFORM was marginally better, which is expected because PVFORM assumes that the system operates with a maximum power point tracker. In the development of the program there has been a focus on creating an effective user interface. This is designed to simplify and speed up program operation, and to present output in a form which is useful and illustrative.

Solar energy is an abundant renewable source, which is expected to play an increasing role in the grid's future infrastructure for distributed generation. The research described in the thesis focuses on the analysis of integrating multi-megawatt photovoltaics (PV) systems with battery energy storage into the existing grid and on the theory supporting the electrical operation of components and systems. The PV system is divided into several sections, each having its own DC-DC converter for maximum power point tracking and a two-level grid connected inverter with different control strategies. The functions of the battery are explored by connecting it to the system in order to prevent possible voltage fluctuations and as a buffer storage in order to eliminate the power mismatch between PV array generation and load demand. Computer models of the system are developed and implemented using the PSCADTM/EMTDCTM software.

The Photovoltaic (PV) systems have been realized using different architectures, starting with the string and centralized PV system to the modular PV system. Presently, decentralized inverters are being developed at the PV panel power level (known as AC ?? PV Modules). Such new PV systems are becoming more attractive and many expect this will be the trend of the future. The AC-Module PV system consists of an inverter attached to one PV panel. This integration requires that both devices have the same life-span. Although, the available commercial inverters have a relatively short life-span (10 years) compared to the 25 ??year PV. It has been stated in literature that the energy storage capacitor (electrolytic type) in the single-phase inverter is the most vulnerable electronic component. Hence, many techniques such as (power decoupling techniques) have been proposed to solve this problem by replacing the large electrolytic capacitor with a small film capacitor. This thesis will present a quick review of these power decoupling techniques, and proposes a new three-port micro-inverter with power decoupling capability for AC-Module PV system applications.

Power electronic converters are being increasingly used on isolated marine power systems, to provide variable speed control of electric motors. As the rating of these drive converters increases, the converter load becomes a significant part of the total system load. Traditional methods for calculating the performance characristics, which assume the presence of an infinite busbar on the system, are not appropriate for such systems. The intercoupling which exists between system components such as synchronous generators, converters, and the drive motor must be included in the calculation. In this thesis, a commercially available software simulator Saber, is used to model a complete electrical cycloconverter propulsion drive, of the type which may be used for future Royal Navy frigates. This model includes the synchronous generators, cycloconverters, and induction motor drives. The simulation is performed in the time domain, which ensures that the intercoupling present between system components is preserved. The simulation is not restricted to one converter configuration, and has been used to investigate the relative merits of a number of possible converter connections. This method can be used to study drive performance under unbalanced conditions as well as for normal balanced operation. There is no perceived limit to the size, or complexity, of the converter systems which can be studied using this method. The only cost would be increased computer run times.

This works focuses on analyzing ac/dc hybrid power systems with large number of power converters that can be used for a variety of applications. A computer model of a sample power system is developed. The system consists of various detailed/switching models that are connected together to study the sample system dynamic behavior and to set conditions for safe operation. The stability analysis of this type of power systems has been approached using time domain simulations. There are three types of stability analysis that are studied: steady-state, small-signal analysis and large signal analysis. The steady-state stability analysis is done by investigating the nominal operation of the power electronics system proposed. The small-signal stability of this system is studied by running different parametric case studies. First, the safe values of the main system parameters are defined from the view of the stability of the complete system. Then, these different critical parameters of the system are mapped together to predict their influence on the system. The large signal stability is examined through the response of the power system to different types of transient changes. There are different load steps applied to the critical parameters of the system at the maximum or minimum stability boundary limit found by the mapping section. The maximum load step after which the system can recover and remain stable is defined. The other type of large signal stability analysis done is the study of faults. There are different faults to be studied; for example, over voltage, under voltage and over current.

This work demonstrates the use of digital simulation for analyzing protection system performance. For studies of complex, multi-relay protection systems, digital simulation provides utility engineers with an attractive alternative to relay testing techniques. The cost of digital simulation facilities can be lower than the cost of comparable testing facilities; relay hardware does not have to be made available for the test laboratory. Digital simulation would ordinarily be impractical for security and dependability studies, due to the thousands of individual simulations involved. The number of simulations needed can be greatly reduced by using a technique called "numerical logic replacement" for implementing the protection scheme logic. This unconventional technique makes near-misoperation visible from individual simulations. The likelihood of overlooking potential misoperation is thus much lower than with the usual direct (Boolean) implementations.

This thesis discusses two different photovoltaic systems, organic solar cells, and photonic power converters. The open-source software package Solcore was used to simulate and analyze optoelectronic properties of both systems. It is widely accepted that the transition from a fossil-fuel driven economy is necessary in the coming future. Organic solar cells are an alternative energy generation method with potential for fast energetic and economic payback periods. Bulk heterojunction organic solar cells are a common design, as they have particularly low manufacturing costs due to a simple device architecture. In this work, two bulk heterojunction blends are experimentally assessed using the acceptor molecule silicon phthalocyanine (bis(tri-n-butyl silyl oxide) silicon phthalocyanine ((3BS)2-SiPc) as a potential low-cost non-fullerene alternative to the typical acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC₆₁BM). These acceptors are compared within blends with the typical donor compound poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and also poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo [1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2- thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c’]dithiophene-4,8-dione)] (PBDB-T). Device performance was assessed under standard conditions, increased angles of incidence, and reduced light intensities. Devices with the P3HT:(3BS)2-SiPc blend achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.6%, which outperformed P3HT:PC₆₁BM devices with a PCE of 3.0% due to a higher open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.76 V as opposed to 0.53 V. The PBDB-T:(3BS)2-SiPc achieved a high VOC of 1.09 V, but had a lower PCE of 3.4% in relation to the PBDB-T:PC₆₁BM device with a PCE of 6.4% and a VOC of 0.78 V. Photonic power converters are devices in optical networks that allow for optical power transmission rather than the conventional method of electrical power transmission. This provides benefits such as electrical isolation and resistance to electromagnetic interference, along with the ability to propagate along the same cable as data. These power converters are used to convert optical power to electrical power, and operate similarly to a solar cell with a narrow bandwidth. Multijunction designs are often used for increased operating voltage and efficiency. In such designs employing a vertical architecture, the bottom-most junction has the largest thickness along with the lowest efficiency due to increased recombination losses. To improve this lower efficiency, light trapping techniques can be employed to decrease the junction thickness while retaining the optical thickness. In this work, a current-matched 5- junction GaAs photonic power converter was simulated with both metallic and distributed Bragg reflectors at the rear of the device. These reflectors allowed for the thinning of the bottommost junction, which resulted in an increase in efficiency and overall power output of the power converter.

PV Inverters have the task of tracking the maximum power point (MPP), and regulating the solar energy generation to this optimal operation point. The second task is the conversion of direct current produced by the solar modules into alternating current compatible with the grid. A new inverter approach such as a single phase micro inverter is emerging aimed to overcome some of the challenges of centralized inverters. As a counterpart to the central inverter, a micro inverter is a small compact module attached directly to each solar panel. To provide for the constantly increasing demand for a small size, light weight and high efficiency micro inverter, soft switching power conversion technologies have been employed. The switching stress can be minimized by turning on/off each switch when the voltage across it or the current through it is zero at the switching transition. With the addition of auxiliary circuits such as auxiliary switches and LC resonant components the so called soft switching condition can be achieved for semiconductor devices. Four main purposes to investigate the soft switching technologies for single-phase micro-inverter are: (1) to improve overall efficiency by creating the favorable operating conditions for power devices using soft-switching techniques; (2) to shrink the reactive components by pushing the switching frequency to a higher range with decent efficiency. (3) to ensure soft switching does not exacerbate inverter performance, meaning all conventional PWM algorithms can be applied in order to meet IEEE standards. (4) to investigate which soft switching techniques offer the cheapest topology and control strategy as cost and simple control are crucial for low power inverter applications. An overview on the existing soft-switching inverter topologies for single phase inverter technology is summarized. A new quasi resonant DC link that allows for pulse- width- modulation (PWM) is presented in this thesis. The proposed quasi resonant DC link provides zero-voltage switching (ZVS) condition for the main devices by resonating the DC-link voltage to zero via three auxiliary switches and LC components. The operating principle and mode analysis are given. The simulation was carried out to verify the proposed soft switching technique. A 150W 120VAC single-phase prototype was built. The experimental results show that the soft switching for four main switches can be realized under different load conditions and the peak efficiency can reach 95.6%. The proposed quasi DC link can be applied to both single-phase and three-phase DC/AC micro inverter. In order to boost efficiency and increase power density it is important to evaluate the power loss mechanism in each stage of operation of the micro inverter. Using the datasheet parameters of the commercially available semiconductor switches, conduction and switching losses were estimated. This thesis presents a method to analyze power losses of the new resonant DC link inverter which alleviates topology optimization and MOSFET selection. An analytical, yet simple model for calculating the conduction and switching losses was developed. With this model a rough calculation of efficiency can be done, which helps to speed up the design process and to increase efficiency.

Relevance of research. Due to the rapid deployment of the non-dispatchable (intermittent) generation sources in the smart grid, such as integration of the photovoltaic power plants and wind turbines in the distribution systems; this caused a problem of the uncertainty increase of simulation results for decision-making for power supply systems, these uncertainties of power systems are getting more and more notice. At the same time, the classical power systems models cannot give accurate simulation results. Wherein; it became necessary to define new models to represent the specific parameters of power system. wherein; this research reveals to the benefits of using probabilistic mathematical approaches to define and calculate the specific economic parameters, as well as the technical parameters for power supply system with the integration renewable energy generators, which are characterising by randomness and uncertainty due to the high penetration to the renewables. Monte Carlo Method, and Point Estimation Method are used to handle the uncertainties of renewable energy resources. The standard functions to represent the stochastic parameters of the model are analyzed with the use of three-point estimation technique for the distribution functions of their probable values. A synthetic skewed probability density function was analytically constructed basing on the standard normal distribution, which is suitable for analytic representation of the predicted and/or statistical random sampling of the uncertain model parameters of energy system with renewables, and analytical expressions were obtained to compute the moments of proposed synthetic probability function. Relationship of work with scientific programs, plans, themes. is to demonstrate the possibility of describing the input parameters of the simulation Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling by probability Density Functions by the use of three-point approximation techniques and to obtain analytical expressions for the characteristics of such distributions, suitable for non-iterative (as opposed to Monte Carlo Method) probabilistic method applications, namely the Point Estimation Method. Purpose and tasks of the research. Increasing the simulation accuracy results for estimation economic and technical parameters characterising photovoltaic power plant based on based on the life cycle model; as well as development of different algorithms based on deterministic and stochastic modeling of power system with non-dispatchable sources and minimize the computation time. Object of research. Processes of determining the estimated technical and economic parameters characterising a photovoltaic power plant located in Ukraine basing on stochastic modeling. Subject of research. Use of the Monte Carlo Method and Point Estimation Method to estimate the various economic and technical information characteristic of alternative power plants in order to obtain accurate simulation results. Practical value of the results. Practical techniques of the three-point approximation are used to construct the probability density function of the model uncertain (stochastic) parameter, which dominantly influences the modeling result: an event occurrence probability, the result attainability, whatsoever. This technique is an effective tool for the practical evaluating of an uncertain value of a technological or economic factor of material and/or economic object, and widely used for overall Levelized Energy Cost (LCOE – LEC) which is directly or indirectly engaged into analytic representation of the power systel model. Usually, the model of a kind is designed to solve technical and/or economic problem by means of Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling. Scientific novelty of the obtained results is the development of algorithms and mathematical solutions using a probabilistic approach basing Point Estimation Method instead of Monte Carlo Melthod to obtain more accurate estimation simulation results, as well as to obtain computational results in less time for useful decision-making in alternative power plant projects.

The yield from a solar photovoltaic (PV) source is dependent on factors such as light and temperature. A control system called a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) ensures that the yield from a solar PV source is maximized in spite of these factors. This thesis presents a novel implementation of a perturb and observe (PO) MPPT. The implementation uses a switched capacitor step down converter and a custom digital circuit implementation of the PO algorithm. Working in tandem, the switched capacitor step down converter and the custom digital circuit implementation were able to successfully track the maximum power point of a simulated solar PV source. This implementation is free of the overhead encountered with general purpose processor based MPPT implementations. This makes this MPPT system a valid candidate for applications where general purpose processors are undesirable. This document will begin by discussing the current state of MPPT research. Afterward, this thesis will present studies done to be able to use the chosen switched capacitor step down converter. Then the digital circuit PO implementation will be discussed in detail. Simulations of the architecture will be presented. Finally, experimental validation using a hardware prototype will be shown.

In order to achieve the goal of zero net-energy consumption in residential and commercial buildings, substantial research has been devoted to developing methods for energy harvesting from window glass that is capable of passing visible light through the windows of buildings while converting the unwanted invisible solar radiation into electricity. Research has focussed on two particular aspects, namely (i) the integration of thin-film technology for solar radiation transmission control and (ii) light guiding structures for solar radiation routing towards the edges of the glass window. Recently, photovoltaic (PV) solar cells have been investigated and promoted as products for converting solar energy into electricity. Due to the increased demand for renewable energy sources, the manufacture of PV panels’ arrays has advanced considerably. However, they cannot compete with fossil fuel or nuclear energy, due to the high cost of inorganic solar cells and their low power conversion efficiency (PCE). To lower the cost per installed capacity ($/Watt) and to use the complete solar spectrum, new PV technologies have been developed, such as solar concentrators. Among the many kinds of concentrators, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have significant industry application potential. Materials used in LSCs are inexpensive, the solar cell size is reduced and no tracking of the sun is required. In an LSC, the incident sunlight is absorbed by luminescent species, such as fluorescent dyes, quantum dots or rare-earth ion embedded in the active layer (organic or inorganic), which re-emits light in random directions usually at longer wavelengths. In an ideal LSC, all the re-emitted light can be routed towards the edges, where the attached small-area solar cells harvest the light and convert it into electricity. In this thesis, several contributions are made toward the development of organic LSCs. The first contribution is related to the design and development of multilayer thin film structures containing dielectric and metal layers, using physical vapour deposition, for the control of thermal and solar radiation propagated through glass windows. Measured transmittance spectra for the developed thin-film structures are in excellent agreement with simulation results. For the second contribution, a cost-effective, long-life-time organic LSC device with UV epoxy as a waveguide layer doped by two organic materials is developed. A PCE as high as 5.3% and a device lifetime exceeding 1.0×105 hrs are experimentally achieved. The third contribution of the thesis is the development of a general method for encapsulating organic LSCs, based on employing three optically transparent layers, (i) an encapsulating epoxy layer and (ii) two insulating SiO2 layers that prevent the dye dissolving into the epoxy layer. The encapsulated organic LSCs demonstrate an ultra-long lifetime of ~ 3.0×104 hrs and 60% transparency when operated in an ambient environment, of around 5 times longer than that of organic LSCs without encapsulation. Finally, the last contribution of the thesis is the development of a new LSC architecture that mitigates the reabsorption loss typically encountered in LSCs. Experimental results demonstrate significant reduction in photon reabsorption, leading to a 21% increase in PCE, in comparison with conventional LSCs.

This thesis describes the creation of a small-scale Hybrid Power System (HPS) that maximizes energy from a wind turbine and photovoltaic array. Small-scale HPS are becoming an increasingly viable energy solution as fossil fuel prices rise and more electricity is needed in remote areas. Modern HPS typically employ wind speed sensors and three power stages to extract maximum power. Modern systems also use passive rectifiers to convert AC from the wind turbine to DC that is usable by power electronics. This passive system inefficiently wastes power and introduces damaging harmonic noise to the wind turbine. The HPS described in this thesis does not require external wind speed sensors, and has independent wind and solar Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). It converts AC from the wind turbine to DC with a Vienna rectifier that can be controlled to improve efficiency, allow MPPT, and allow Power Factor Correction (PFC). PFC all but eliminates the harmonic noise that can damage the wind turbine. A prototype HPS was built and evaluated that combines the two renewable sources in such a way that only two power stages are necessary, the Vienna rectifier and a step-down converter. This thesis describes the prototype and reports the results obtained.

The needs to the sustainable development of electricity, energy efficiency improvement, and environment pollution reduction have favored the development of distributed generation (DG). But the problems come with increasing DG penetration in distribution networks. This thesis presents the Solar Energy Grid Integration System (SEGIS) Stage III project done by Portland General Electric (PGE), Advanced Energy, Sandia National Lab on a PGE selected distribution feeder. The feeder has six monitored commercial solar PV systems connected. The total power output from the PV systems has the potential to reach 30% of the feeder load. The author analyzes the performance of the solar feeder on both generation and voltage effects. As a project report, it introduced a new islanding detection done by other team members to give an islanding solution of future high penetration distribution networks. At last, the author describes micro-grid and grid support concepts in a SEGIS concept paper with some examples.

Many multiagent systems are environments where distinct decision-makers compete, explicitly or implicitly, for scarce resources. In these competitive environments, itcan be advantageous for agents to cooperate and form teams, or coalitions; this cooperation gives agents strategic advantage to compete for scarce resources. Multiagent systems thus can be characterized in terms of competition and cooperation. To evaluate the effectiveness of cooperation for particular coalitions, we derive measures based on comparing these different coalitions at their respective equilibria. However, relying on equilibrium results leads to the interesting question of stability. Control theory and cooperative game theory have limitations that make it hard to apply them to study our questions about stabililty and evaluate cooperation in competitive environments. In this thesis we will lay a foundation towards a theory of coalition stability and robustness for multiagent systems. We then apply this condition to form a methodology toevaluate cooperation for market structure analysis.

Electricity service providers (ESP) worldwide have increased their interest in the use of electrical distribution, transmission, generation, storage, and responsive load resources as integrated systems. Referred to commonly as "smart grid," their interest is driven by widespread goals to improve the operations, management and control of large-scale power systems. In this thesis I provide research into a novel agent-based simulation (ABS) approach for exploring smart grid system (SGS) dispatch, schedule forecasting and resource coordination. I model an electrical grid and its assets as an adaptive ABS, assigning an agent construct to every SGS resource including demand response, energy storage, and distributed generation assets. Importantly, real time is represented as an environment variable within the simulation, such that each resource is characterized temporally by multiple agents that reside in different times. The simulation contains at least as many agents per resource as there are time intervals being investigated. These agents may communicate with each other during the simulation, but only agents assigned to represent the same unique resource may exchange information between time periods. Thus, confined within each time interval, each resource agent may also interact with other resource agents. As with any agent-based model, the agents may also interact with the environment, in this case, containing forecasted environment, load and price information specific to each time interval. The resulting model is a time-independent global approach capable of: (1) capturing time-variant local grid conditions and distribution grid load balancing constraints; (2) capturing time-variant resource availability and price constraints, and finally, (3) simulating efficient unit-commitment real-time dispatches and schedule forecasts considering time-variant forecasted transactive market prices. This thesis details the need for such a system, discusses the form of the ABS, and analyzes the predictive behavior of the model through a critical lens by applying the resulting proof-of-concept simulation to a set of comprehensive validation scenarios. The resulting analysis demonstrates ABS as an effective tool for real-time dispatch and SGS schedule forecasting as applied to research, short-term economic operations planning and transactive systems alike. The model is shown to converge on economic opportunities regardless of the price or load-forecast shape and to correctly perform least-cost dispatch and schedule forecasting functionality.

It is known that the inverters used in photovoltaic systems connected to mains power (SFCR), when connected to the power grid, should provide a sinusoidal waveform at its output terminals. The photovoltaic systems inverters regularly monitor the power grid quality they are connected to, so they generate power only if the grid of the Concessionaire or external power grid presents voltage. Depending on the inverter, on the power that it develops over the same rated power, on the power grid it is connected to and on the characteristics of the load that it also feeds, it is possible to occur certain distortions on the power grid compared to pure sine waveform, in terms of voltage or even in terms of electric current. The devices connected to grid commonly present themselves as harmonic generators. The loads cause large distortions in the power grid causing disorders occur both voltage and current in a distribution line or power circuit. These distortions, commented in the literature as harmonic distortions, greatly affect the inverters performance when connected to power grids. On these grids, as it is possible to identify significant distortions, the parameters for pairing the power grid, in which the inverters are based, can turn them into disconnection. The inverter automatically disconnects from the grid if for some reason the grid stops powering the power grid - such system is called anti-islanding. Therefore, it is important to theoretically reproduce the behavior of power grids which the inverters are connected to, in order to study them. However, due to the fact that the inverter is also a switched source-based electronic equipment to "reassemble" the sine wave, it provides a deformation not only on the voltage but also on the power grid current which it is connected to, being this deformation also significant in large SFCR (photovoltaic generation facility with large numbers of inverters). In this sense, the present work aims to implement the modeling of nonlinear loads (which can degrade the power quality) in SFCR inverters simulations, based on the special application of loads parameters from the FVCONECT software, developed by the Solar Energy Laboratory, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.

Laser assisted weapons, such as laser guided bombs, laser guided missiles and laser beam-riding missiles pose a significant threat to military assets in the modern battlefield. Laser beam-riding missiles are particularly hard to detect because they use low power lasers. Most laser warning systems produced so far can not detect laser beam-riding missiles because of their weak emissions which have signals less than 1% of laser range finder power . They are even harder to defeat because current counter-measures are not designed to work against this threat. The aim of this project is to examine the vulnerability of laser warning systems against guided weapons, to build an evaluation tool for laser warning sensors (LWS) and seekers, and try to find suitable counter-measures for laser beam-riding missiles that use low power lasers in their guidance systems. The project comes about because of the unexpected results obtained from extensive field trials carried out on various LWRs in the United Arab Emirates desert, where severe weather conditions may be experienced. The objective was to help find a solution for these systems to do their job in protecting the tanks and armoured vehicles crews from such a threat. In order to approach the subject, a computer model has been developed to enable the assessment of all phases of a laser warning receiver and missile seeker. MATLAB & SIMULINK software have been used to build the model. During this process experimentation and field trials have been carried out to verify the reliability of the model. This project will enable both the evaluation and design of any generic laser warning receiver or missile seeker and specific systems if various parameters are known. Moreover, this model will be used as a guide to the development of reliable countermeasures for laser beam-riding missiles.

The manufacture of photovoltaic (PV) system components has a role to play in the industrialisation and poverty reduction strategies of developing countries. It has also been suggested that small scale local manufacture of balance of systems components has the potential to improve the maintenance, installation and use of the technology. However, PV is a complex technology and most developing countries have not been able to build the capabilities required to manufacture PV system components of an appropriate quality and price, either in the modern or small scale sectors. The factors that determine the success of PV manufacturers in developing countries are therefore of interest. Previous studies on learning in the PV industry have been focused on industry-wide concerns and have not explicitly addressed enterprise-level capability building or challenges specific to developing countries. In particular, there has been very little published about small scale PV manufacture. This thesis therefore aims to improve understanding of the factors that influence capability building, with a view to assisting decision making in relation to PV manufacture in developing countries. The aims of the study have been fulfilled by the development and assessment of a software simulation training tool for PV cell production line engineers, the development of an analysis framework, and application of it to several case study PV enterprises. Through the application of the framework to the case studies, it has been possible to assess the role of software simulations, the suitability of countries with different types of infrastructure for hosting PV manufacturing and the institutional arrangements or interventions that could be used to promote capability building for PV manufacturers in developing countries. While further case studies are required to make more than tentative conclusions, the framework developed and tested in this thesis may now be used as a tool to systematically and rapidly analyse the appropriateness of different types of PV manufacture in particular countries, to identify the weaknesses in their PV technological systems and therefore to suggest where resources should be invested and where appropriate institutional changes could be made. The simulation software has been demonstrated to be an effective capability building tool, thus providing one of the key elements required for successful manufacturing.

Modern aircraft, military and commercial, rely extensively on hydraulic systems. However, there is great interest in the avionics community to replace hydraulic systems with electric systems. There are physical challenges to replacing hydraulic actuators with electromechanical actuators (EMAs), especially for flight control surface actuation. These include dynamic heat generation and power management. Simulation is seen as a powerful tool in making the transition to all-electric aircraft by predicting the dynamic heat generated and the power flow in the EMA. Chapter 2 of this dissertation describes the nonlinear, lumped-element, integrated modeling of a permanent magnet (PM) motor used in an EMA. This model is capable of representing transient dynamics of an EMA, mechanically, electrically, and thermally. Inductance is a primary parameter that links the electrical and mechanical domains and, therefore, is of critical importance to the modeling of the whole EMA. In the dynamic mode of operation of an EMA, the inductances are quite nonlinear. Chapter 3 details the careful analysis of the inductances from finite element software and the mathematical modeling of these inductances for use in the overall EMA model. Chapter 4 covers the design and verification of a nonlinear, transient simulation model of a two-step synchronous generator with three-phase rectifiers. Simulation results are shown.

In recent times, renewable energy-based distributed generation (DG) has captivated the industrial sector and on a global scale this has become a leading research area. Distributed generation using wind, solar energy or biomass as a source of energy can produce electricity on a small scale. Therefore, there is a strong focus on using renewable energy as a safe alternative source of energy, especially because it can in future play a dominant role in the world’s energy production and help to tackle the increase of global warming caused by fossil energy. However, a major problem facing renewable energies is that they are highly dependent on weather conditions. Since the power generated by DG, as well as consumption, depends on the weather conditions, irregularity of production and consumption leads to frequency and voltage fluctuations, and it can become difficult to determine and monitor consumer usage at any given time. Distributed generation can then be subjected to discrepancies in consumer usage and this can lead to severe overloading. As a result, microgrids powered by DG, operating in a single, stand-alone controllable system mode, face new challenges in terms of balancing a cluster of loads. Balancing a cluster of loads by making sure at all times that the entire system operates without overloading, is an essential requirement for the proper operation of a power system. The microgrid load considered in this project is the sum of sensitive and non-sensitive loads, respectively 5 kW and 100 kW, which constitute load requirement of one village; this total load required by a number of villages is called a cluster load. Depending on the input power generated by a DG-based photovoltaic (PV) system, these loads can be controlled using a logic control switch (LCS). When the power produced is less than the minimum load required by a component of a cluster, overloading occurs. The purpose of using an LCS is to ensure that a stable system is maintained under various loads and resource conditions. An LCS is used to continuously monitor and adjust load through circuit breakers. It is a good alternative to load balancing for a cluster of villages in rural area where a microgrid is operating in stand-alone mode. The focus of this research is to design a photovoltaic system with a maximum capacity of 1 MW providing power to a cluster of rural villages, and operating in stand-alone mode, and then to apply different control techniques (droop control, dq0 reference frame + proportional integral (PI) controller, and PI controller alone) at the inverter terminal of the PV system, in order to evaluate the stability of the output voltage. Another goal of the research is to develop an energy management system (EMS) algorithm to support the PV system in reducing loads. Therefore, a iii stable system under various load and resource conditions, as well as suitable control mechanisms are required to model a PV system. There is a need for the modelling of a PV array using a physical modelling block in MATLAB (SIMULINK) software. The state flow provided by SIMULINK is used in this project to develop an algorithm for load balancing. The state flow gives possibilities of modelling complex algorithms by combining graphical and tabular representations to create sequential decision logic, derived from state transition diagrams and tables, flow charts and truth tables. Furthermore, the design of a microgrid using photovoltaic DG and an energy management system, has been developed. The present work mainly consists of a stand-alone microgrid operation, where the power generated must be equal to the load power. In addition, different control methods, consisting of a dq0 reference frame + PI controller, are analysed at the invertor terminal. Subsequently an LCS algorithm is developed; this is required to maintain the system within certain limits and prevents overloading. LCS algorithms are based on a flowchart and allow switching automatically selected loads, depending on the power (solar radiation) available. In addition, a flow chart provides an easy way of using a graphical transition state and state chart to establish a set of rules for the system. The simulation results show that both droop control and a dq0 reference frame + PI controller are much better than a PI controller alone; these results also compared well with similar studies found in the literature. Also, these results are further improved with an EMS in order to maintain the output voltage of the microgrid, by switching on and off certain loads depending on the input power. The modelling of the microgrid using DG, based on photovoltaic systems with a maximum capacity of 1 MW, supports and improves the PV system by reducing loads. Moreover, droop control, and dq0 transformation + PI control present a better result than PI controller alone.

With the rising cost of petroleum, concerns about exhausting the fossil fuels we depend on for energy, and the subsequent impacts that the burning of these types of fuels have on the environment, countries around the world are paying close attention to the development of renewable types of energy. Consequently, researchers have been trying to develop ways to take advantage of different types of clean and renewable energy sources. Wind energy production, in particular, has been growing at an increasingly rapid rate, and will continue to do so in the future. In fact, it has become an integral part in supplying our future energy needs, making further advancements in the field exceedingly critical. A 2 MW wind energy conversion system (WECS) is presented and has been simulated via the dynamic simulation software Simulink. This WECS consists of a 2 MW permanent magnet synchronous generator connected to the transmission grid through a power conversion scheme. The topology of this converter system consists of a passive AC/DC rectifier as well as a PWM DC/AC IGBT inverter, used to interface the DC link with the grid. The inverter has an integrated current control system for power factor correction to improve output power stability. The described WECS enhances grid-side tolerance by buffering wind power disturbances demonstrated by its capability to isolate the grid from wind speed fluctuations. It also optimizes wind energy capture through harmonic filtering, enhancing output power quality. These findings have the potential to lead to further advancements including the capability for island operation and integration to a smart grid.

To combat global climate change, the reduction of carbon emissions in different industries, particularly the power industry, has been gradually moving towards a low-carbon profile to alleviate any irreversible damage to the planet and our future generations. Traditional fossil-fuel-based generation is slowly replaced by more renewable energy generation while it can be harnessed. However, renewables such as solar and wind are stochastic in nature and difficult to predict accurately. With the increasing content of renewables, there is also an increasing challenge to the planning and operation of the grid. With the rapid deployment of smart meters and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), an emerging approach is to schedule controllable end-use devices to improve energy efficiency. Real-time pricing signals combined with this approach can potentially deliver more economic and environmental advantages compared with the existing common flat tariffs. Motivated by this, the thesis presents an automatic and optimal load scheduling framework to help balance intermittent renewables via the demand side. A bi-level consumer-utility optimization model is proposed to take marginal price signals and wind power into account. The impact of wind uncertainty is formulated in three different ways, namely deterministic value, scenario analysis, and cumulative distributions function, to provide a comprehensive modeling of unpredictable wind energy. To solve the problem in off-the-shelf optimization software, the proposed non-linear bi-level model is converted into an equivalent single-level mixed integer linear programming problem using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions and linearization techniques. Numerical examples show that the proposed model is able to achieve the dual goals of minimizing the consumer payment as well as improving system conditions. The ultimate goal of this work is to provide a tool for utilities to consider the demand response model into their market-clearing procedure. As high penetration of distributed renewable energy resources are most likely applied to remote or stand-alone systems, planning such systems with uncertainties in both generation and demand sides is needed. As such, a three-level probabilistic sizing methodology is developed to obtain a practical sizing result for a stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system. The first-level consists of three modules: 1) load demand, 2) renewable resources, and 3) system components, which comprise the fundamental elements of sizing the system. The second-level consists of various models, such as a Markov chain solar radiation model and a stochastic load simulator. The third-level combines reliability indices with an annualized cost of system to form a new objective function, which can simultaneously consider both system cost and reliability based on a chronological Monte Carlo simulation and particle swamp optimization approach. The simulation results are then tested and verified in a smart grid laboratory at the University of Hong Kong to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model. In summary, this thesis has developed a comprehensive framework of demand response on variable end-use consumptions with stochastic generation from renewables while optimizing both reliability and cost. Smart grid technologies, such as renewables, microgrid, storage, load signature, and demand response, have been extensively studied and interactively modeled to provide more intelligent planning and management for the smart grid.

Abstract: The optimization models applied to hydrothermal scheduling on the Brazilian National Interconnected System (SIN) shall provide the order of hydrothermal generation that meets the Brazilian market of electric energy in a way that the demands of power are attended and the operating costs, minimized. Due to the hydroelectric predominant feature in the Brazilian system, the planning aim to determine the optimal hydroelectric generation that minimizes the thermoelectric supplementation necessary to attend the power demands of Brazilian SIN. The long-term hydrothermal scheduling plan model operating nowadays in the Brazilian electrical system is the NEWAVE, a stochastic model that represents the system by equivalent subsystems of energy, through composite reservoirs, and has its solution decompounded of individualized plants by other models, like the DECOMP and SUISHI-O. The ODIN model is the energy planning methodology developed at UNICAMP that treats indirectly the stochasticity of affluent flows. This is done by means of an inflow predictor and an optimizer for individual plants, thats provide the planning decisions at each interval to order the hydrothermal scheduling considering the provided flow generation for each plant and the optimization of the hydraulic generation of the system. This work presents a comparison of performance between the models of hydrothermal scheduling NEWAVE and ODIN, in their obtainment of optimized hydrothermal scheduling for the Brazilian SIN

The IEC 61850 standard, “Communication networks and systems in substations” was promulgated to accommodate the need for a common communication platform within substations for devices from different vendors. The IEC 61850 standard proposes a substation automation architecture that is Ethernet-based, with a “station-bus” for protection devices within the substation and a “process bus” where raw data from the voltage and current transformers are published onto the data network using a device known as a Merging Unit. To date, most of the standardization efforts were focused at the station bus level where event-triggered messages are exchanged between the substation automation devices, commonly referred to as Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). These messages are known as Generic Object Oriented Substation Event messages. Equipment from vendors to accommodate the “process bus” paradigm, however is still limited at present. The Centre for Substation Automation and Energy Management Systems was established within the Electrical Engineering Department at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology with one of its objectives being the development of equipment either for simulation or real-time purposes in compliance with the IEC 61850 standard. In order to fulfil this long-term objective of the Centre, an in-depth understanding of the IEC 61850 standard is required. This document details the efforts at acquiring the requisite knowledge base in support of the educational objectives of the Centre and the research project implements a simulation of a merging unit which is compliant with the functional behavior as stipulated by the standard. This limited functional implementation (i.e. non-real-time) of the merging unit, is achieved through the development of a virtualized data acquisition node capable of synthetic generation of waveforms, encoding of the data and publishing the data in a format compliant with the IEC 61850-9-2 sampled value message structure. This functional behavior of the virtual sensor node which was implemented has been validated against the behavior of a commercial device and the sampled value message structure is validated against the standard. The temporal behavior of the proposed device is commented upon. This research project forms the basis for future real-time implementation of a merging unit.

Abstract The goal of this research is to advance the state of the art in bulk power system reliability assessment. Bulk power system reliability assessment is an important procedure at both power system planning and operating stages to assure reliable and acceptable electricity service to customers. With the increase in the complexity of modern power systems and advances in the power industry toward restructuring, the system models and algorithms of traditional reliability assessment techniques are becoming obsolete as they suffer from nonrealistic system models and slow convergence (even non-convergence) when multi-level contingencies are considered and the system is overstressed. To allow more rigor in system modeling and higher computational efficiency in reliability evaluation procedures, this research proposes an analytically-based security-constrained adequacy evaluation (SCAE) methodology that performs bulk power system reliability assessment. The SCAE methodology adopts a single-phase quadratized power flow (SPQPF) model as a basis and encompasses three main steps: (1) critical contingency selection, (2) effects analysis, and (3) reliability index computations. In the critical contingency selection, an improved contingency selection method is developed using a wind-chime contingency enumeration scheme and a performance index approach based on the system state linearization technique, which can rank critical contingencies with high accuracy and efficiency. In the effects analysis for selected critical contingencies, a non-divergent optimal quadratized power flow (NDOQPF) algorithm is developed to (1) incorporate major system operating practices, security constraints, and remedial actions in a constrained optimization problem and (2) guarantee convergence and provide a solution under all conditions. This algorithm is also capable of efficiently solving the ISO/RTO operational mode in deregulated power systems. Based on the results of the effects analysis, reliability indices that provide a quantitative indication of the system reliability level are computed. In addition, this research extends the proposed SCAE framework to include the effects of protection system hidden failures on bulk power system reliability. The overall SCAE methodology is implemented and applied to IEEE reliability test systems, and evaluation results demonstrate the expected features of proposed advanced techniques. Finally, the contributions of this research are summarized and recommendations for future research are proposed.

Pulsed Detonation Engines (PDEs) have the potential to revolutionize fight by better utilizing the chemical energy content of reactive fuel/air mixtures over conventional combustion processes. Combustion by a super-sonic detonation wave results in a significant increase in pressure in addition to an increase in temperature. In order to harness this pressure increase and achieve a high power density, it is desirable to operate PDEs at high frequency. The process of detonation initiation impacts operating frequency by dictating the length of the chamber and contributing to the overall cycle time. Therefore a key challenge in the development of a practical PDEs is the requirement to rapidly initiate a detonation in hydrocarbon-air mixtures. This thesis evaluates the influence of spark energy and airflow velocity on this challenging initiation process. The influence of spark energy, number of sparks and airflow velocity on Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition (DDT) was studied during cyclic operation of a small-scale PDE at the General Electric Global Research Center. Experiments were conducted in a 50 mm square transitioning to cylindrical channel PDE with optical access operating with stoichiometric ethylene-air mixture. Total spark energy was varied from 250 mJ to 4 J and was distributed between one and four spark plugs located in the same axial location. Initial flame acceleration was imaged using high-speed shadowgraph and was characterized by the time to reach 20 cm from the spark plug. Measurements of detonation wave velocity and emergence time, the time it takes the detonation wave to exit the tube, was measured using dynamic pressure transducers and ionization probes. It was found that the flame front spread was faster at higher spark energies and with more spark locations. Initial flame acceleration was 16% faster for the 4-spark, 4 J case when compared to the baseline 1-spark, 1 J case. When looking at the effect of airflow on the influence of spark energy, it was found that airflow had a larger effect on emergence time at high energies, versus energies less than 1 J. Finally, for a selected case of 0.25 J spark energy and 4 sparks, the velocity of the fuel-air mixture during fill was found to have a varying influence on detonation initiation and emergence time.

The existing power grids that form the basis of the respective electrical power infrastructures for various states and nations around the world, are expected to undergo a period of rapid change in the near future. The key element driving this change is the emergence of the Smartgrid. The Smartgrid paradigm represents a transition towards an intelligent, digitally enhanced, two-way power delivery grid. The aim of the Smartgrid is to promote and enhance the e_cient management and operation of the power generation and delivery facilities, by incorporating advanced communications, information technology, automation, and control methodologies into the power grid proper. Smartgrid's are currently an active topic for research, where the research is strongly focused on developing new technologies such as: demand response, power generation management, pricing modelling and energy markets participation, power quality, and self-healing scenarios. In recent times, in both the United States of America and Europe, many new projects have begun which are specifically directed towards developing “Smartgrid” technologies. In Australia, the Federal Government has recently initiated funding plans to promote the commercialisation of renewable energy. In order to exploit these developments, Edith Cowan University (ECU); which is a High Voltage (HV) customer for the major utility network of Western Australia, and which owns its own transformers and Low Voltage (LV) network; is planning to integrate renewable energy suppliers within its LV network. The aim of this research is to introduce a smart decision making system, which can manage the operation of disparate power generation sources installed on a LV network (microgrid); such as that owned by ECU on its campuses. The proposed energy management system is to gather data in real-time, and it must be capable of anticipating and optimising energy needs for each operational scenario that the microgrid might be expected to experience. The system must take into account risk levels, while systematically favouring low economic and environmental costs. A management system application, based on autonomous and distributed controllers, is investigated in a virtual environment. The virtual environment being a full-scale simulation of ECU's microgrid; with solar panels, wind turbines, storage devices, gas gen-sets, and utility supply. Hence the simulation studies were conducted on the basis of realistic demand trends and weather conditions data. The major factors for reducing the cost of generation in the case study, were identified as being: 1) demand forecasting; 2) generation scheduling; 3) markets participation; and 4) autonomous strategies configuration, which is required to cope with the unpredictable operation scenarios in LV networks. Due to the high uncertainty inherent within the operational scenarios; an Artificial Intelligence (AI) deployment for managing the distributed sub-systems was identified as being an ideal mechanism for achieving the above mentioned objectives. Consequently it is proposed that Multi-Agent System (MAS) technology be deployed, to enable the system to respond dynamically to the unpredictable operational conditions by updating the method of analysis. The proposed system is to behave in a strategic manner when dealing with the expected operational scenarios, by aiming to achieve the lowest possible cost of power generation for the microgrid. The simulated system is based on realistic operational scenarios, which have been scaled to suit the size and type of load in the case study. The distributed intelligent modules have proven to be successful in achieving the potential benefits of the dynamic operational conditions, by minimising the cost of power generation. The distributed intelligent modules, which form the basis of the proposed management systems, have been designed to perform the following functions: 1. Provide accurate demand forecasts through the utilisation of an AI-based adaptive demand forecasting model. The novel demand-forecast modelling technique, which was introduced to model demand in the case study, has been utilised to supply reasonably accurate demand forecasts to other stages of processing in the management system. The forecasts are generated from this model, by monitoring and controlling the forecasting error to ensure consistent and satisfactory forecasts. 2. Make optimum decisions concerning the operation of the power generators by considering the economic and the environmental costs. In order to deal with the complexity of the operational conditions, a smart and adaptive generation scheduling method was implemented for the case study. The method was primarily applied to control the charging/ discharging process of the Storage Devices (SDs) among the other generators. The proposed method aims at controlling the resources, and extracting the benefit of having an hourly based variable generation cost. 3. Integrate the microgrid into the electricity market, in order to enable the microgrid to offer its spinning and non-spinning power generation reserve as Ancillary Services (AS) to the grid. To this end, studying the operational mechanisms of the Australian market was essential prior to building the proposed market participation rules which form an integral part of the proposed management system. As a result we used the market data, by approaching the market operators to create a semi-realistic competitive market environment for our simulations. Consequently, a smart and adaptive pricing mechanism, that adapts the AS prices to the amount of electricity on offer, and the level of demand in the market has been presented. The motivation for introducing the proposed management system, is to achieve a transition plan for current microgrids, so that they can have a commercial connection to the future Smartgrid. The results obtained in this work show that there is a signi_cant economic and environmental advantage to be gained from utilising intelligence when managing electricity generation within a power grid. As a consequence, selecting the appropriate management strategy is fundamental to the success of the proposed management system. In conclusion, modelling of the proposed strategies using MAS technology has proven to be a successful approach, and one that is able to reflect the human attitude; in making critical decisions and in reducing the cost of generation.

Although evolving mobile technologies bring millions of users closer to the vision of information anywhere-anytime, device battery depletions hamper the quality of experience to a great extent. The massive explosion of mobile applications with the ensuing data exchange over the cellular infrastructure is not only a blessing to the mobile user, but also has a price in terms of rapid discharge of the device battery. Wireless communication is a large contributor to the energy consumption. Thus, the current call for energy economy in mobile devices poses the challenge of reducing the energy consumption of wireless data transmissions at the user end by developing energy-efficient communication. This thesis addresses the energy efficiency of data transmission at the user end in the context of cellular networks. We argue that the design of energy-efficient solutions starts by energy awareness and propose EnergyBox, a parametrised tool that enables accurate and repeatable energy quantification at the user end using real data traffic traces as input. EnergyBox abstracts the underlying states for operation of the wireless interfaces and allows to estimate the energy consumption for different operator settings and device characteristics. Next, we devise an energy-efficient algorithm that schedules the packet transmissions at the user end based on the knowledge of the network parameters that impact the handset energy consumption. The solution focuses on the characteristics of a given traffic class with the lowest quality of service requirements. The cost of running the solution itself is studied showing that the proposed cross-layer scheduler uses a small amount of energy to significantly extend the battery lifetime at the cost of some added latency.  Finally, the benefit of employing EnergyBox to systematically study the different design choices that developers face with respect to data transmissions of applications is shown in the context of location sharing services and instant messaging applications. The results show that quantifying energy consumption of communication patterns, protocols, and data formats can aid the design of tailor-made solutions with a significantly smaller energy footprint.

Abstract: The Brazilian electric sector has been passing through successive reforms in the search for an institutional model that allows the optimization of the use of the energetic resources, concealed with the goal of achieving a sustaining development. The energetic planning plays a fundamental roll in this context, thus studies and researches designated to support planning in the energetic sector and elaboration of long term energetic policies have been gaining space among the Brazilian electric sector priorities. The proposal of this work is to present an operating policy based on the concept of storage guide-curves for the mid term hydrothermal scheduling. This policy determines that, at each stage of the planning period, the decisions of water discharged from each hydro plant must be such that keep their reservoirs at levels pre-determined by storage guide-curves. The performance analysis of this operating policy was done through operation simulation, considering different hydro plants of the Brazilian system. The simulation results were also compared to more robust operative policies, including the use of stochastic dynamic programming, a consolidated solution technique for the problem witch is actually in use by the Brazilian electric sector. The results demonstrate that, despite of simple and transparent, this operating policy presents a competitive performance for the hydrothermal scheduling

Abstract: Certainty Equivalence Principle (CEP) ensures that deterministic and stochastic approaches are equivalent in stochastic dynamic systems optimization when some assumptions hold. It is possible that Long Term Hydrothermal Scheduling (LTHS) problem is close to attaining CEP¿s assumptions, although it does not attain them theoretically. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to analyze the validity of CEP in Dynamic Programming framework applied to single reservoir LTHS problem and to evaluate the impacts of each CEP¿s condition violation. The CEP¿s conditions were progressive analyzed by comparison of the considered models results from an ideal case where theoretically assumptions hold until a case study closer to reality. Slight differences were observed between deterministic and stochastic operation policies, indicating that LTHS model is close to attain the CEP¿s conditions. An immediate consequence of this study would be that deterministic approach for the single reservoir LTHS problem can be as effective as stochastic ones

This work presents methodology for voltage adequacy into electric power distribution network with the insertion of photovoltaic distributed generation. Deterministic, heuristic and hybrid optimization methods are used to find the variables: i) geographical siting, ii) supply power and iii) amount of photovoltaic distributed generation. The main characteristic of the methodology is the obtaining of the amount of photovoltaic distributed generation units necessary for the adequacy of electric network voltage, respecting the supply power of each generation unit. The results indicate improvement in voltage levels after insertion of photovoltaic distributed generation units with optimized parameters for different voltage transgression scenarios. The proposed methodology is efficient for voltage adequacy through the insertion of photovoltaic distributed generation.

This work presents the design and experimental implementation of a complete paralleling method to be used for parallel single-phase UPSs connection. There is a algorithm that performs a phase/frequency droop, and a new method to work with or without data communication among the inverters. When communication is working, a new algorithm is used, inserting a variable virtual resistance in the output, along with active power sharing, obtaining a low output voltage THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) value and good power sharing. Without communication a constant virtual resistance is inserted, increasing the output THD with non-linear load, but still allowing a good active power sharing. The advantage is to obtain a good performance operation with communication, but, in case of communication failure, the system still works providing more reliability. The implementation have a electronic load emulation algorithm, with purpose to execute factory tests, based in the same parallelism algorithm, just changing some variables.
