L’importance des fouilles archéologiques de Philippes, première fondation paulinienne en Europe, ainsi que leur longue histoire, offre l’occasion de réfléchir sur les rapports entre Bible et archéologie. Le bilan historiographique met en évidence des surinterprétations et des anachronismes, afin de faire « coller » les vestiges au texte des Actes des apôtres ou, au contraire, provoquer la tradition chrétienne en avançant des hypothèses hasardeuses sur de nouvelles découvertes et les silences des textes. À Philippes, l’intérêt historique des inscriptions l’emporte sur celui des vestiges et permet de restituer un contexte religieux et culturel de la mission chrétienne dans la moyenne durée, sinon pour la période précise du passage de l’apôtre. Mais c’est surtout la construction de la mémoire de saint Paul au cours des trois premiers siècles, comme héros fondateur et martyr intercesseur, que les vestiges archéologiques permettent d’étudier.

Horace : poète officiel, chantre de la Paix retrouvée, chargé par Auguste de composer l’hymne de la grande fête nationale de 17 ACN, le Chant séculaire. Quel contraste ce portrait offre-t-il avec l’ensemble des allusions à sa formation et à ses premières expériences, jusqu’en 30, où paraissent absents la vocation d’orateur et le sens politique ! Quel contraste aussi avec les années discrètes qui suivent la déroute de Philippes. À ce moment, républicain vaincu, mais sauf, il se met à écrire, pour un cercle d’amis seulement, loin de toute ambition politique. Telle est la persona qu’il construit, particulièrement dans les Satires. Mais la politique le rattrape. Son indépendance était toute relative. Horace ne pourra jamais vivre dans la seule fiction poétique et la parodie. L’alternance entre liberté poétique et positionnement politique peut éclairer certains passages des Satires, et plus particulièrement le récit apparemment banal du voyage hautement diplomatique à Brindes (I, 5). Les années 42-30 furent déterminantes pour Horace, comme elles le furent pour le destin de Rome.

The Category of Reticence and a Return to the Story in Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s Writing. An Introduction The article presents the function of reticence in Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s writing in the context of the return to the story in francophone literature, initiated in the 80s of the 20th c. Jean-Philippe Toussaint is a contemporary Belgian writer, photographer and film-maker. He has written twelve novels and short stories, as well as authored films and installations. Belonging to the generation of minimalist writers, Toussaint sets his use of reticence in the context of the tendency to return to Genette’s category of story (récit). Since the publication of his novel La Réticence (1991) reticence has become the key category of his écriture. In his books, it shapes the form, the narration and the plot, the construction of characters, temporality, and space. Thus, its function in Toussaint’s writing enables us to observe idiosyncratic aspects of his “infinitesimalist” texts which play with the canonical, realistic model of the novel. Kategoria „powściągliwości” (réticence) i powrót do opowieści w pisarstwie Jeana-Philippe’a Toussainta. Wprowadzenie Artykuł stanowi próbę omówienia kategorii powściągliwości (fr. réticence) w prozie Jeana-Philippe’a Toussainta w kontekście powrotu do opowieści w literaturze frankofońskiej, zapoczątkowanego w latach 80. XX wieku. Jean-Philippe Toussaint to współczesny belgijski pisarz, fotograf i filmowiec. Napisał m.in. dwanaście powieści i kilka zbiorów krótkich form, jest także autorem filmów i instalacji. Jako przedstawiciel pokolenia pisarzy minimalistycznych Toussaint osadza wykorzystanie powściągliwości w kontekście zjawiska powrotu do genette’owskiej kategorii opowiadania (fr. récit). Od czasu publikacji powieści La Réticence (1991) powściągliwość stała się kluczową kategorią Toussaintowskiego pisarstwa. W jego utworach kształtuje formę, narrację i fabułę, ale także konstrukcję postaci, czasowość i przestrzeń. W ten sposób status omawianej kategorii w twórczości Toussainta umożliwia analizę poszczególnych, a zarazem charakterystycznych dla tego twórcy aspektów textes infinitésimalistes, które podejmują grę z modelem balzakowskiej powieści realistycznej.

It aims to show this fragment's interconnection with further textual witnesses. Im Zentrum des Beitrags steht das mittelniederdeutsche Pergamentfragment Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen, Abteilung Westfalen, V 073 (früher Dep 49): Nachlass Josef Prinz, Nr. 14 (2. Hälfte 14. Brother Philipp's 'Marienleben' (written around 1300) is the most widespread religious verse epic in Middle High German literature. Up to now, 120 textual witnesses have been known. The new fragment documents a slightly modified version that circulated in East Swabian around the middle of the 14 th century, it is therefore informative for the early reception of the work in this region. Bruder Philipps 'Marienleben' (entstanden um 1300) ist das am weitesten verbreitete geistliche Versepos der mittelhochdeutschen Literatur. Bis heute sind 120 Textzeugen bekannt. Das neue Fragment bezeugt eine leicht bearbeitete Version, die um die Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts im Ostschwäbischen verbreitet war; es ist daher aufschlussreich für die frühe Rezeption des Werkes in diesem Gebiet.

I have been charged to summarize the mood of the symposium, although not to summarize the scientific details, for they are best learned by reading the proceedings. To the best of my ability, I shall comment on those details in a manner that Philippe Delache might spontaneously have done had it not been incumbent upon him to cover everything. Therefore I shall be somewhat personal. I shall make no attempt to offer a balanced view of the observations and calculations that have been reported, but instead concentrate on how they might be viewed. In so doing I bear in mind that Philippe was not one to tow the party line. He often ignored the democratic means by which unfortunately so-called scientific truth is too often established today, and instead showed more interest in the unusual. Although such behaviour can sometimes lead one into danger, as it did with regard to Philippe's proposed explanation of the infamous 160-minute oscillation of the sun (Arvonny, 1983), it is also the most common road to true discovery.

Cicero's level of success within the senate fluctuated throughout the period of his Philippic orations. These fluctuations reflect the very divisive nature of the conflict with Marcus Antonius, and the ever-changing circumstances that Cicero confronted. The orations themselves record Cicero's improvisational responses to these developments and allow us to study Cicero's range of persuasive techniques over a period of eight months, from September 44, when Cicero delivered his first Philippic, through to April 43, when he delivered his last. There has been a growing body of scholarship dealing with the Philippics, but there remains work to be done on the ad hoc nature of senatorial debate. Manuwald's recent study of praise and blame within the Philippics has provided a starting point, since she identifies strategic elements within the collection as a whole and how these elements functioned in terms of persuasion. She notes the short term use of praise and blame for the purpose of urging the senate to a particular course of action, but her avowed aims were not to isolate strategies within the speeches. And while Frisch provides full coverage of the historical context, he is less concerned with persuasive strategies within and between the speeches themselves. In this regard Philippics 10 and 11 provide an insight into the malleable and ad hoc nature of Roman oratory in the context of senatorial debate. We are able to follow Cicero's shifts in rhetorical strategies as he attempts to meet the exigencies of each situation. Philippics 10 and 11 have ostensibly similar rhetorical aims: to persuade the senate to appoint Marcus Brutus and Caius Cassius to powerful military commands in the eastern provinces, and yet the rhetorical strategies that Cicero employs differ in various ways. My aim is to examine what factors influenced his choice of strategy in the delivery of the two speeches.
