According to the psychoanalytical Freudian approach, the pain in a conversion symptom (hysterical pain), whether defined or indefinable, corresponds to a displacement of the intrapsychic conflict to the subject’s physical body. The libidinal energy attached to the repressed representation is transformed into neurotic energy in organs or parts of the body so as to dramatically represent the desirable as well as the prohibitive. The body lends itself as a ‘location’ to the conversion disorder in order for the anguish of the intrapsychic conflict to be expressed in openly manipulative terms. Does this hysterical pain designate both the pleasure of the performance and the discontent of the psychological anguish? On the contrary, the psychosomatic pain manifests itself in the actual physical body of the organism and not in the illusory body of the hysteric. It is possible for the (psycho)somatic disorder to be expressed through the pain symptom upon an existing, objective condition diagnosed in an organ or body part. But is it not the very nature of the psychosomatic disorder a unique differentiation criterion between the two types of the disorder? The rationale, the type of the psychological defense mechanisms and the nature of the impulsive dynamics which subdue each of those two types of painful symptoms constitute criteria of other differentiators within the psychopathological and psychoanalytic approach.

This paper examines the philosophical and theological foundations of the medical anthropology of Victor von Weizsäcker (1886–1957). Drawing on sources, many of which are being introduced into scholarship for the first time, and research literature, we show the relationship between Weizsäcker's ideas of man as a psychosomatic unity, illness as a life crisis, and health, on which the German thinker's theory is based, and the corresponding philosophical and theological conceptions. We reveal the significance of Weizsäcker's ideas in the context of the interaction of modern human sciences, philosophy and theology.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 outbreak resulted in two respective social and economic lockdowns in Greece. According to international findings pressure and instability may lead to the sense of losing control over the situation, and in retrospect to the escalation of psychosomatic symptoms for the general population.ObjectivesThe present study examines whether five socio-demographic variables are significant to the variance of psychosomatic symptoms of the Greek population between the two domestic lockdowns.Methods192 participants, of whom 141 were females(73.4%) and 51 males(26.6%), provided their answers between October 5 and November 18, 2020 to the research team of the Psychiatric Unit of the General Public Hospital of Nikaia, ‘Ayios Panteleimon’, in Athens, Greece. The participants were asked about their (i)‘income’, (ii)‘occupation’, (iii)‘residence’, (iv)‘marital status’ and (v)‘education’. Psychosomatic symptoms were measured through the self-reported PSSQ-29 tool (Cronbach’s alpha= .955).ResultsOut of the five One-way Between-participants ANOVAs, none of the five socio-demographic variables showed any significant statistical difference in the level of psychosomatic symptoms.ConclusionsThe study provides some evidence against the protective and harmful role of the socio-demographic variables in psychosomatic health. It is noteworthy, that the conditions were not similar with previous studies. It might be possible that the COVID-19 worked as a phenomenon of mass panic for the Greek sample, and thus no socio-demographic background was either protective or harmful. In conclusion, the present study clearly highlights that none of them had any significant effect to the variance of psychosomatic symptoms for the general population.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Introduction. The nocebo effect consists in delivering verbal suggestions of negative outcomes so that the subject expects clinical worsening. Several studies indicate that negative verbal suggestions may result in the amplification of pain. Amplification style is one of the most important dimensions in psychosomatic research. Methods. One group of pain therapy unit patients was evaluated at baseline and again after 6 months from the beginning of the pain treatment. Results. Only 43% of 86 chronic pain patients respond positively to the expectation of sham pain. This group shows at baseline higher pain intensity (t value: 2.72, ) and lower cold pain threshold (t value: 2.18, ) than the group of subjects with any response to sham pain stimulus. Somatoform dimensions influence positively the strength of nocebo response in those predisposed to it. Conclusion. Our study shows that the power of the nocebo phenomenon seems to be a dimension belonging to the investigation in psychosomatic. In contrast to what one might expect, the presence of the nocebo phenomenon affects positively pain relief and the outcome of pain treatment. In a clinical setting, and the meaning of nocebo response does not seem to be different from placebo response.

In this work, we analyze various consequences of the phenomenon of mobbing on the health of a work sector with special characteristics: the agro fruit sector. For this purpose, we collected data from a sample of 396 workers (61 men and 331 women) belonging to this sector in the Region of Murcia (Spain). A questionnaire with the following measurement instruments was administered: a Spanish adaptation of the revised Negative Acts Questionnaire (Sáez, García, & Llor, 2003), the Psychosomatic Problems Questionnaire (Hock, 1988), and a measure of absenteeism. The results revealed a significant and positive relation between workplace mobbing and psychosomatic symptoms, but not with absenteeism. The implications of the results for future research are discussed.

Background and objective: The WHO has included burnout as an occupational phenomenon in the ICD-11. According to the WHO, burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of feelings of guilt and burnout on health in Polish anesthesiologists. Alcohol and tobacco intake, psychosomatic disorders, and depression were assessed. Methods: The study had a non–randomized cross-sectional character. The sample consisted of 372 Polish anesthesiologists. Burnout was measured by the Spanish burnout inventory. Results: Post hoc analysis for burnout consequences: depression (F(5,366) = 17.51, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.193), psychosomatic disorders (F(5,366) = 13.11, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.152), and tobacco intake (F(5,366) = 6.23, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.078), showed significant differences between burnout with and without the highest levels of feelings of guilt. All the instruments applied were reliable. Conclusions: Depression, psychosomatic disorders, and alcohol and tobacco intake are suspected to be consequences of the highest guilt levels related to burnout, i.e., Profile 2 according to the burnout model of Gil-Monte. Participation in prevention programs is recommended for these cases.

Backgrounds. Alexithymia is a relevant phenomenon, occurring transversally to healthy subjects and individuals affected by several conditions. Its role is considerable, according to current state of the art several conditions emerged as influenced, maintained and worsened by alexithymic structures and figures. The present study was aimed at highlighting the existing relations, the differences and the directions assumed by alexithymic factors and health status in patients affected by psychosomatic conditions. Methods. The sample consisted of 150 participants, 42 males (28.0%) and 108 females (72.0%), aged 26 to 78 years old with a mean of 42.24 years old (SD = 12.39). Subjects were previously assessed through DCPR-SI, in order to identify psychosomatic issues. The study evaluated measures related to alexithymia (Tas-20) and health status (SF-36), and considered demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and education. Results and Conclusions. The analyses demonstrated a number of significant relationships between alexithymia, psychological outcomes, and physical outcomes, including psychosomatic disorders. In addition, sex differences were found in gastrointestinal outcomes, as well as outcomes related to energy/fatigue and physical functioning. The study of alexithymia may provide a fruitful approach in understanding various issues related to pathology and general health. Further studies are needed to expand the understanding of alexithymia to other groups and health-related outcomes.

The problem of safety of management activity in the psychological research has emerged recently. The urgency of this problem conditioned by the demand of time because this is one of the main psychological factors of human resources’ effective work. The psychological safety of a person is conditioned by excluding the dangers in labor activity, which often expresses as psychosomatic manifestations. However, they are not often visible because of lack of the immediaterelationship between work and somatic manifestations. Numerous studies show the existence of the phenomenon. However, there is no scientific corroboration of manifestation of this phenomenon, process of development and ways of prevention within managers. In this terms implementation of scientific works in this sphere have great importance.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of psychological and somatic factors in the development of left ventricular hypertrophy in the cohort of persons without arterial hypertension and to give a quantitative evaluation to the effect of these factors on this phenomenon. Materials and methods. The study included 107 practically healthy people of working age from an organized popula- tion, including 46 men (mean age of 43.7 ± 11.5 years; M ± s) and 61 women (mean age 43.1 ± 10.1 years; M ± s). All the subjects underwent measurement of blood pressure according to the standard procedure, questionnaire survey using validated psychological questionnaires, the study of structural changes of the myocardium with echocardiography, the tests for metabolic indices in venous blood on an empty stomach (hormonal, immunological, biochemical). Results. Individuals with left ventricular hypertrophy were characterized by a significantly greater level of depression, accumulated stress, social frustration, decreased self-evaluation of health state and vitality. The value of the left ven- tricle mass index in practically healthy individuals without arterial hypertension is determined by 4 factors: the level of apolipoproteins B, the ratio of waist circumference / hip circumference, the level of the end products of free radical lipid oxidation, and smoking duration. Conclusion. Hypertrophy of the left ventricle in people without arterial hypertension is associated with personality characteristics that determine the nature of a multilevel response (somatic, hormonal, biochemical).

AbstractThis paper explores the philosophy of neutral monism within the framework of a generalized version of quantum theory where all references to the physical world have been relaxed. Psychic and somatic features of the individual are conceived of as co-emergent, complementary properties of an underlying, psychophysical level of reality. It is shown that their entanglement can be interpreted in terms of non-causal correlations and parameterized by time, which thus plays the role of psychophysical interface.

Introduction. The article examines the influence of spiritual culture on psychosomatic health of people. This topic, often worded as a problem, is a subject of studies for representatives of religions (the article deals with Orthodox Christianity) and scientists of different areas of scientific knowledge. Appropriate addressing and solution of this problem will benefit psychosomatic health of a person and society. Goal of Research. The authors base on the published materials (papers, books) and analyze the positions of the representatives of religion (Orthodox Christianity) and scientists on the topic/problem to determine the differences. Methods. Comparative analysis. Theoretical modelling. Results of Research. The main distinction of views of scientists from views of the representatives of religion consists in understanding of spirituality as an exceptionally sociocultural phenomenon, the result of education. In Orthodox Christianity is understood as the result of action of Holy Spirit and self-improvement in order to “gain” Holy Spirit; the self-improvement is aimed to forming such spiritual qualities as faith, hope, love, humility, meekness etc., that benefit psychosomatic health of people. Discussion and Conclusion. If among representatives of Orthodox Christianity engaged in the study of the problem there are no strong differences on the genesis of spirituality and its influence on all sides of human life, then among scientists there are rather different views on the problem. Some representatives of scientific society consider spirituality exceptionally from materialism approach, but the other use certain synthetic approaches, taking into account that materialism is not able to give answers for all questions.

Introduction. In this study we test the hypothesis that specific behavioral and biochemical vulnerabilities characterize individuals with hyperthyroidism - Graves type, one of the classically cited 'psychosomatic disorders'. Material and methods. The sample included 24 subjects with Graves disease and 34 controls. All participants were evaluated for personality and temperament characteristics and for platelet MAO activity. A smaller group of panic disorder patients was tested with the same set of measures to ensure a validity of the study, especially regarding results on personality tests. RESULTS. Individuals with hyperthyroidism had lower platelet MAO activity and higher scores on histrionic (Hy), depressive (D) and hypochondriac (H) subscale on the MMPI-201 than normal controls. Their TPQ temperament scores were characterized by high Harm Avoidance, whereas other temperament traits were average. Platelet MAO activity was inversely correlated with the MMPI-201 psychopatic deviance scale (Pd) and positively correlated with the TPQ Reward Dependence scale. CONCLUSIONS. Our results provide support for the psychosomatic concept of Graves' disease. Personality features, temperament traits, and platelet MAO activity of hyperthyroid individuals are different from those in normal controls and correspond to those observed in anxiety disorders. We propose that the observed behavioral and biochemical similaritites between hyperthyroid and anxiety disorder patients represent an equicausality phenomenon, where the same underlying heritable factors, such as variable central monoaminergic activity coupled with temperament-related susceptibility to stress, facilitate phenotypic manifestation of a number of psychosomatic and psychiatric disorders - including Graves disease. The observed correlations between personality traits and MAO activity provide support for the hypothesized functional relationship between the underlying central monoaminergic activity and temperament traits associated with anxiety, depression, and impulsivity.

The article reviewed the specifics of the phenomenon of emotional burnout, the leading symptoms and phases of emotional burnout, characterological features that contribute to the emergence and development of a syndrome of emotional burnout. The author analyzes emotional burnout as a complex multidimensional dynamic entity that manifests itself specifically and develops over a long time: the chronic state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion. Mathematical data processing and graphical presentation of the results were carried out using the computer software package of statistical software SPSS 11.5. The results of this study confirm the suggested assumptions about the existence of reliable statistically significant relationships between all the symptoms of the phenomenon of "emotional burnout" (with a probability p <0.01), excluding the symptom of "emotional detachment", which has no correlation with the symptoms of "anxiety and depression", "expansion of the sphere of saving of emotions", "Psychosomatic and psycho-vegetative disorders".

A theoretical analysis of various approaches to understanding the phenomenon of health, developed in the framework of social medicine, clinical psychology, a psychosomatic school, behavioral and cognitive areas of psychology and psychotherapy, humanistic personality theories, is carried out. Different levels of conceptualization of the health phenomenon are considered (as a socio-cultural / semantic construct and as a significant aspect of an individual self-concept). The author analyzes the theoretical foundations and scientific specifics of the Health psychology, as an independent field of psychological knowledge. The author also analyzes the results of a comprehensive study of the “internal representation of health” that was formed among junior students of natural sciences and humanities departments at the Russian State University. Specific types of the internal representation of health are revealed and described.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of procrastination in the historical context. The peculiarities of defining this concept in the works of Ukrainian and foreign researchers are considered. Different definitions of the phenomenon of procrastination are analyzed and it is established that there is no single approach to its definition. However, it was found that procrastination has always been characterized by two aspects: voluntary postponement of intention and the presence of psychological discomfort associated with postponement of such intention. The analysis of the reasons of its occurrence is carried out; it was found that there is no consensus on the factors that cause and / or exacerbate procrastination. The characteristic features of this phenomenon and features of manifestation are investigated. The main approaches to the study of procrastination are analyzed: psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, subjective, motivational, psychophysiological. Possible negative consequences for the personality are revealed, among which are anxiety, stress, loss of productivity, psychosomatic disorders. The main types of procrastination are considered. It was found that some of the most common reasons for procrastination are: the difficulty of the task, fear of failure and success, perfectionism, insecurity, inability to plan and organize their activities, improper motivation, impulsiveness and others. It has been established that procrastination is a complex, heterogeneous phenomenon that includes a number of components and extends to various spheres of human life. The relationship between the concepts of procrastination and laziness is analyzed. It is established that they are based on various psychological mechanisms. Prospects for further research are identified.

Abstract It is widely acknowledged that the freer, more sexualized movements of social dancing in the early twentieth century (1900–1929) accompanied the beginnings of female emancipation both socially and politically. However, less explored are the similarities between the provocative, inelegant choreography of such social dances and the symptoms of female hysteria, a medical phenomenon that saw the body as a canvas for mental distress as provoked by social tensions. This essay will address the possible alignment of hysteria and popular social dance in relation to the evolving Modern Woman. It will examine the motivations of modern, ‘hysterical’ dances, and discuss their progressive status in terms of gender by considering perceived psychosomatic interactions within the female dancing body.

The aim of this article is the implementation of theoretical and empirical analysis of the essence of emotionality. Methods of study: analysis, comparison and systematization of the scientific literature concerning the phenomenon of an emotional deprivation, observation, analysis of the documentation, the method of the peer review, a conversation, a testing, a survey for the identification of the consequences of the emotional deprivation. Results. We figured out that emotional deprivation very closely connected with other kinds of deprivation and is part of the mental deprivation. The semantic content of the notion "emotional deprivation" depends on the conceptual and theoretical approaches of the author, studying of the specific conditions of its origin and also the specific of age group. However most scientists continue determine emotional deprivation as a category of mental state of the personality. Emotional deprivation is an instrument of change and transformation in the psychics, affects somatic health, causes psychosomatic disorders and mental disorders. It is generalized that emotional deprivation through negative feelings and emotions affects other mental spheres of personality – volitional, intellectual, motivational, value-oriented, changing them, deforming, complicating, ie affects the psyche in general. Conclu s ion s . Emotional deprivation can't be equated as a mental state, because it is connected indirectly with the mental state of the deprived personality, but it isn't one. To our mind, emotional deprivation is a process of long lasting stay of the personality in conditions of emotionally impoverished environment, conditioned by displeasure of emotional needs, loss, limitation, insufficiency or absence of abilities for installation of close connections, contacts and interaction with a significant person. It causes dysfunction, breaches and disarrays of the mental sphere of a personality.

Background: Bullying remains as pervasive phenomenon affecting children worldwide. Bullying in school has long been a matter of concern as wide range of adjustment problems including poor mental health and violent behavior in school are associated with it. The present study examined the prevalence of bullying behavior (bullies, victims and bully-victims) and their association with depression and psychosomatic symptoms. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among 8th, 9th and 10th grade students of Pyuthan Municipality, Mid-Western Nepal. A total of 405 students responded to the structured self-administered questionnaire. Data was collected from randomly selected public and private schools. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis. Results: The result of this study showed higher prevalence of bully (55.8%) among students of Relatively Advantaged Janajati whereas victims (64.86%) belonged to Disadvantaged Janajatis. Students who bully were found more in grade 8 and 10 whilst the students of grade 9 were more victims. Bullying behavior prevailed more in private schools than in public schools. Conclusions: The overall prevalence of bullying behavior (either bully or victim) is 69.14%. The finding bolsters an association between bullying behavior and depression, psychosomatic symptoms and school type. Higher prevalence of bullying behavior suggested by this study portends the alarming consequences among school students. Bullying needs to be addressed fleetly. Effective interventions that reduce bullying practice in school is essential.

The urgency of the problem is due to terminological differences and differences in its interpretation, the lack of developed psychological theories and models, as well as contradictions existing within modern society. The purpose of the study is to provide theoretical substantiation of the structural and functional aspects of the phenomenon of integrity in contextually substantiated representations of mental health and the process of personal self-construction. As a research criterion, a synergistic approach is used that allows us to consider the integrity factor as an unstable universe that prepares a person to overcome crises and disasters with minimal losses. As a result of the analysis it was established: violation of the integrity (fragmentation) of the individual, which entails the propensity for the emergence of psychosomatic pathology, can be distinguished in a separate group of maladaptive states, border disorder and psychosomatic diseases with symptoms of bulimia, depression and alexithymia. By comparing the existing theoretical definitions of the violation of the integrity of the individual, it has been established that the destructive psychological mechanism is the fragmentation and insufficiency of regulatory activity, which ensures an active creative attitude to personal self-construction.The results of the research can be used in the development of educational and educational programs for psychologists, social workers, medical services and other professionals who, by the nature of their activities, contact with this category of persons.

Aim. To study quality of life (QoL), as an instrument for standardized assessment and monitoring of patients’ psychosocial status. Psychosocial approach is particularly important in diseases with psychosomatic component, such as essential arterial hypertension (EAH). Material and methods. QoL was assessed in 101 adolescents (62 boys, 39 girls; age 14-17 years) with various EAH forms, as well as in 38 healthy adolescents (comparison group, CG). Based on the results of 24-hour blood pressure monitoring (BPM), all patients were divided into 3 groups: with white-coat hypertension (n=32); with labile AH (n=33); and with stable AH (n=36). QoL was assessed with the MOS SF-36 scale, measuring not only absolute QoL values, but also the “proxy-problem” phenomenon (the discrepancy between QoL reported by the patients themselves and their proxies – parents). Results. Compared to the CG, adolescents with various BP levels demonstrated reduced QoL. QoL reduction was minimal in adolescents with white-coat hypertension, and maximal in patients with labile AH. In the latter group, both physical and psychological functioning parameters were reduced. The parents of EAH adolescents typically overestimated the severity of physical dysfunction of their children, while underestimating the magnitude of psychological dysfunction. Conclusion. The results obtained confirm the important role of psychosomatic mechanisms in AH pathogenesis, and emphasize the need for psychiatrist or clinical psychologist’ participation in the treatment of hypertensive adolescents. In adolescents with stable AH, physical dysfunction was predominant.

Abstract This study analyses the practice of medical pluralism in contemporary Romania, addressing the phenomenon of alternative medicine through the Foucauldian concept of counter-conduct. Employing in-depth interviews with general and alternative practitioners from two towns in Transylvania, and participant observations in spaces where they practice their knowledge, I describe how certain discursive acts reformulate the body and the subject-patient. Alternative therapists construct their practice in direct opposition to several parameters of biomedicine, such as the logic of diagnosis, treatment, and the praxis of patient’s visit to the general practitioner’s office, discussed in the paper. They define their approach as psychosomatic, and set-up the medical space as a confessional space, envisioning a holistic corporeality and the idea of the “inner doctor” in each patient. This conduct would supposedly make the subject “active” and “empowered”, as opposed to the “passive” patient succumbed to the diagnosis of conventional doctors.

Drastic transformations of the social and labor sphere have led to the emergence of new health risks and sanitary and hygienic problems associated with unreliability of employment. A new socio-economic and psychological phenomenon “precarity” has emerged, which has aff ected the employment conditions of employees, so the description of the phenomenon “precarity” needs to be clarifi ed.The forms of labor employment that diff er from the typical model and worsen the employee’s situation are considered. The criteria based on which non-standard employment is considered unstable are given.Generalized types of unstable employment are identifi ed, the specifi city of which is determined by a combination of two factors: working time and the term of the contract. Unstable working conditions are possible not only in informal employment, but also in legal labor relations. Unreliability and instability of labor has an objective character and is a natural manifestation of the emerging economic and social order. The phenomenon of “precarity of employment” appears as a new determinant of the health of employees. The main feature when referring employment and labor relations to the phenomenon of “precarity” is their unreliability.Specifies the terms used: “precariat”; “precarious work”; precompact; the precariat. An essential characteristic of precarious employment is the violation of social and labor rights and lack of job security. A significant indicator of precarity is underemployment. Precarity induces the potential danger of dismissal of the employee and the resulting stress, psychosomatic disorders and pathological processes in the psyche.Precarious employment and related labor relations have become widespread. Many employees are deprived of social guarantees, including those related to labor safety, payment for holidays and temporary disability, and provision of preventive measures. Th is leads to a violation of the state of well-being, as well as the deterioration of individual and public health.

The article considers alexithymia as one of the important factors of mental health. The paper presents materials of empirical research on this phenomenon in personality structure of patients with cardiovascular diseases (64 people) and "apparently healthy" subjects (85 people). The obtained results of factorization of alexithymia indicate that alexithymia as a psychological characteristic is significantly expressed, if considered in the context of mental and psychosomatic health. Alexithymia is a separate factor of personality structure in patients with cardiovascular diseases and is involved in each separate factor, which makes it a prominent part of the psychological characteristics of the "apparently healthy" respondents. The research materials can be used to improve the effectiveness of treatment in the development and testing of clinical and psychological support. Such support should be aimed at teaching patients new ways of constructive interaction with society and raising their awareness of their own emotional pains, which they have to be able to identify and tell from ordinary somatic states.

Introduction: Cyberstalking is a relatively recent phenomenon that particularly affects adolescents. Several studies have focused on victims of cyberstalking, but few studies have focused on perpetrators, which is why it is important to examine the psychiatric disorders of perpetrators or even their psychiatric profile. Purpose: To identify the psychiatric characteristics of adolescent cyberstalkers. Methods: Review of the literature on adolescent cyberstalkers Results and Discussion: Several studies show that youth involved in cyberstalking have significantly more behavioral problems than youth who are not involved. Cyberstalkers are distinguished by heteroaggressive behavior in general, as well as frequent acts of transgression and anti-social behavior, and troubled relationships with caregivers. As the severity, frequency and duration of cyberbullying increase, so do the difficulties in emotional and social relationships. In terms of schooling, there are repercussions in terms of performance, behaviour in class and well-being at school. In addition, studies have revealed various psychosomatic manifestations on these harassers, especially headaches, abdominal pain and sleep disorders. Paradoxically, being a cyber-stalker also puts one at high risk of becoming a cyber-victim, especially if the aggression is frequent, which can lead to more psychosocial difficulties. Conclusion: Cyberstalking has a real impact on the mental health of young adolescents, both perpetrators and victims, which requires health professionals to pay attention to this increasingly frequent phenomenon.

SynopsisThis study questions the widely held assumption that the phenomenon known as mass psychogenic illness (MPI) existsper sein nature as a psychiatric disorder. Most MPI studies are problematical, being descriptive, retrospective investigations of specific incidents which conform to a set of pre-existing symptom criteria that are used to determine the presence of collective psychosomatic illness. Diagnoses are based upon subjective, ambiguous categories that reflect stereotypes of female normality which assume the presence of a transcultural disease or disorder entity, underemphasizing or ignoring the significance of episodes as culturally conditioned roles of social action. Examples of this bias include the mislabelling of dancing manias, tarantism and demonopathy in Europe since the Middle Ages as culture-specific variants of MPI. While ‘victims’ are typified as mentally disturbed females possessing abnormal personality characteristics who are exhibiting cathartic reactions to stress, it is argued that episodes may involve normal, rational people who possess unfamiliar conduct codes, world-views and political agendas that differ significantly from those of Western-trained investigators who often judge these illness behaviours independent of their local context and meanings.

The paper focuses on linguistic manifestation of emotion of surprise in modern English poetic texts. The study is guided by the statement that emotions – psychosomatic processes – can be fixed in fictional texts (including the poetic ones) in the form of emotives – the linguistic units that manifest emotions and/or feelings of the addresser. The emotion of surprise differs from other basic emotions of a person due to its ambivalence and specific prerequisites to emergence. As surprise comes forth unexpectedly, the study looks for basic situations in the context of poetic texts when emotives of surprise appear. To study the phenomenon, the concept of emotional situation is employed. It marks the circumstances under which the persona experiences the emotion of surprise. The results obtained from the analysis of modern English poems distinguish several emotional situations in which emotives of surprise appear. They occur at the junction of image-bearing spaces of 1) dream and reality; 2) reality and fantasy; 3) expectations and their fulfilment; 4) two contrasting situations in reality. These image-bearing spaces may have either contrasting or complementing features. The defeated expectancy effect that occurs due their interaction manifests itself verbally via the emotives of surprise.

School dropout has become a serious problem in many places around the world. However, before students actually dropout from school, they normally exhibit some symptoms of disengagement from the social life and emotional involvement of school. Thus, hidden school disengagement or avoiding school psychologically may be an early stage of school dropout. This article examines the phenomenon of hidden school disengagement among students aged 12-16 in China. 14,563 students in 11 provinces and 2 administrative regions participated in a Youth Health Behaviors Survey conducted in 2010. Based on the Index of Hidden Disengagement, 2,854 students (19.6%) were identified as having multiple symptoms of disengagement. Further analysis suggested that students who were identified as hidden disengaged students had a significantly higher ratio of being involved in health-related risk behaviors, suffered from psychosomatic symptoms, and had a pessimistic outlook of their health and their lives. Personal and contextual factors, such as students with one or more siblings in the family, non-intact families, low family economic background, migrant families, left-over children, schools located in rural areas, and non-model schools, all contributed to a higher prevalence of hidden school disengagement.

The relevance of studying the aggression of children in cyberspace remains extremely high due to the ongoing intensification of digital communication, the development of social media and new formats of interaction, and the features of digital socialization of generation Z. In the course of a theoretical analysis of the works of foreign researchers, mainly of the last five years, devoted to the problem of bullying on the Internet, data from numerous surveys on the prevalence of the phenomenon in various countries are presented, the interpretation of the concept of "cyberbullying" adopted in the scientific community is discussed, its classifications and types are considered, as well as the most popular theoretical models of this destructive phenomenon, the prerequisites and predictors, the roles of communication participants and the peculiarities of their interaction in a virtual environment are highlighted. A review of modern studies made it possible to draw attention to the methods of collecting information used abroad, as well as to the relationship with the characteristics of the "dark triad of personality" and the parameters of the "Big Five" test. Analyzing destructive behavior in cyberspace, scientists associate it with an excessive degree of self-disclosure on social networks and the publication of too explicit, provocative content, increased use of psychoactive substances, low levels of friendly support, negative family environment and sexual violence. It was shown that a high degree of peer friendly support, warm relationships at school, and parental support are a protective factor against virtual bullying. Cyberbullying victimization affects the psychosomatic status of the victim, causing increased anxiety, anger, depression, sleep problems, theft, harm, and violation of social rules.

Sickness absence is an important measure of the current situation on the labor market and a source of information on the health condition of the working part of the society. It is also a phenomenon that directly affects the economy. Monitoring the size and causes of sickness absence enables the adjustment of the social and health policy in the country. In Poland, sickness absence is most often analyzed in the context of people receiving sickness allowance - a benefit from the social security system granted to insured persons in the event of incapacity to work due to illness. In 2020, there were noticed over 256 million days of sickness absence, of which the largest part (45 million days) were due to conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium. In turn, COVID-19 was responsible for almost 5 million days of sickness absence, of which 179 thousand days is the period of hospitalizations. In order to prevent permanent incapacity to work, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) runs a program of comprehensive therapeutic rehabilitation for insured persons with: diseases of motor organs (also after accidents), cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, psychosomatic diseases, oncological diseases after treatment of breast cancer and voice organ' cancer.

The article investigates the genesis of psychologism as a methodological basis for the study of religious experience. The authors show that the first experience of consistent applying psychologism for the purpose of radical criticism of religion was carried out by D. Hume, who reduced the religious experience to the emotional and mental nature of man. As a result, in the philosophy of Hume, the sphere of religious experiences was completely desacralized and the concepts making up the core of spiritual and religious-ethical life of man, such as "personality", "spiritual substance", "mystical experience" were declared meaningless. In the research of F. Schleiermacher the principle of psychology was used to identify the grounds of religiosity. According to Schleiermacher, the sacred is rooted in the very nature of man in the form of original, undifferentiated "religious feeling." The type of psychologism developed by Schleiermacher is theistic because it comes from the recognition of the ontological nature of the divine spark, which is initially presented in religious experience and is not brought into it by faith, a specific creed or metaphysics. According to Schleiermacher, it is not the higher mental functions and rational consciousness that are responsible for the feeling of belonging to God, but the prethought experience together with the psychosomatic structures that provide it. Thus, theistic psychology finds the primary elements of religiosity, components creating precognitive content experienced by the human sense of the sacred beyond the usual manifestations of religion, namely faith, thinking and behavior. Later, psychologism was criticized by representatives of phenomenology, who argued that mental phenomena can be recorded as a direct evidence beyond self-consciousness. This led to the formation within the phenomenology of religion of a new kind of psychologism – transcendental psychologism, representatives of which consider religious feeling as a unity of transcendental (categorical scheme of "the sacred") and psychological (religious experience as a mental phenomenon). The significance of theistic psychologism as a methodology for the analysis of religious experience lies in the fact that it, firstly, served as the basis for the formation of the phenomenology of religion as the leading direction of the study of religious experience and, secondly, opened the possibility of studying the universal psychosomatic basis of religious feeling. This basis can be distinguished by comparison and comparative analysis of descriptions obtained as a result of conscious self-observation of personal spiritual experience of representatives of different religions and spiritual practices.

Workaholism is an exceptionally complex psychological phenomenon that has been widely described in the literature from numerous theoretical perspectives. The common assumption in describing psychological profiles of individuals characterised by the so-called workaholic attitude to work and life pertains to the presence of many various mental disorders manifested by a given person. These include depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosomatic disorders and personality disorders. Persons who manifest different stages of inner compulsion are characterised by the absence of control and distance to increased professional activity. Over time, psychopathological symptoms become displayed in the psychological functioning of such individuals, which requires treatment. Moreover, a workaholic patient needs also medical, psychological or psychotherapeutic assistance. The aim of this article is to determine the significance of differential diagnoses of workaholics’ psychological profiles by means of examining clinical case reports to provide a broader and a more in-depth view on treatment and directions to be taken in psychological assistance. By presenting the theoretical grounds of workaholism, the authors focused primarily on presenting clinical aspects of an individual’s negative functioning (detrimental to his or her development and health) in the organisation and structure of a given work situation. Clinical cases reports pertaining to patients suffering from workaholism are not common in the literature. For this reason, the article aimed primarily at describing three psychological profiles of individuals who manifested workaholism with comorbid mental disorders.

Abstract The field of psychology of singing is the least examined area so far, so in the research study we present the research survey from the field of human voice and singing. Music allows the access to the experience of emotions, which can then manifest itself in various changes at a psychosomatic level. New research findings can therefore be used very effectively in the field of music therapy or singing. The anthropological idea of this phenomenon is based on the fact that the human voice is an extremely sensitive physical and emotional tool through which it is possible to act on the body, psyche and spirit, in terms of complex personality development and to discover human contact with its deeper, archetypal components. The sound experience of singing can touch a person’s most basic existential experiences. In this study we want to reveal the underappreciated possibilities of using the human voice and singing in the field of music therapy and point out the purposeful development of vocal dispositions, in concord with the core of human personality (conscious and unconscious). Mainly owing to strong emotions, it has a significant impact on harmonisation of hemispheres, stimulation of all mental functions that leads to spontaneous revitalisation of the psyche and body and it subsequently leads to improved quality of life.

The article reviews the recent scientific literature and the authors’ studies on this topic. Occupational conditions and psychological factors have been shown to play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Their effect is often indirect, through damage to the central nervous, respiratory, and neuroendocrine systems. Hot climate in the workplace and intense infrared radiation cause the water and electrolyte imbalance and chronic hyperthermia and manifests as neurovegetative dystonia. The long-term effects of low temperatures condition ischemic lesions in circulatory system, trophic organ destruction. The influence of ultrahigh-frequency electromagnetic radiation on the cardiovascular system is directly related to the central nervous system and neurohumoral lesions. “Microwave disease” often manifests as polymorphic dystonia. Exposure to occupational vibration causes “white finger” syndrome or Raynaud’s phenomenon together with cerebral vascular lesions. Recent studies have confirmed that noise as a chronic stressor causes the imbalance in the central and vegetative nervous systems and changes in homeostasis. Noise increases catecholamine and cholesterol concentration in blood, has an effect on plasma lipoprotein levels, increases heart rate, arterial blood pressure, and risk of myocardial infarction. Psychophysiological changes caused by long-term stress influence constant pathological changes in the central nervous system, endocrine and cardiovascular systems. The long-term effect of psychogenic stressors is very important in the etiopathogenesis of psychosomatic diseases.

Purpose. The main purpose of the article is the analysis of the phenomenon and manifestations of the somatic transformations in the context of anthropo-technological evolution at the beginning of the XXI century. Theoretical basis. The author determines the understanding of the concept "somatic transformations" in the frames of anthropotechnogynesis is possible only on the base of integrative approach and combination of post-non-classical scientific paradigm methodology, theory of the technological development, ideas of trans-humanism, informative society concepts, and net technologies influence on the identity of the human being with robots in the sphere of bioethics and nanoethics, the ethics of new technologies and legal documents which are regulating the processes of technotransformation of the human being. Originality. The author has proved on the example of analysis of the somatic transformations own psychosomatics as he solves some important global in the context of anthropotechnogynesis that a person with help of technological enlargement of and branch problems, so he is trapped of alienation in the very crucial stage, loses the identity and crashes the corporeality in his self. Conclusions. As evidenced by the given analysis, at the modern stage the anthropotechnogynesis is followed by the large-scale quantitative and qualitative somatic transformations based on NBIC-convergence, as a result, a new anthropological subspecies – Homo technologicus appears. All these transformations are a regular stage of evolution, which confirms the thesis of the essential and functional connection of technology with the human body, which are in a relationship of "mutual provocation". In the base of the paradigmatic ontological and anthropological shift which has been on the modern stage, lies the idea of continuity of anthropotechnological co-evolution of the human body and its environment which projects itself in psychosomatic human structure, making a transformation program for better adaptation in technonanobeing. The convergence of human life and techno-existence is a platform for somatic transformations. They are divided into two main groups: intra-structural, substantial, related to techno-modification of the human body directly through biotechnology and genetic engineering, cyborgization, xenotransplantation, Hi-Hume connection with Hi-Tech and others, and external-contextual, when under the influence of pancommunication and hybridization the environment is increasingly mentalized and somatized, and modern technologies are gradually transformed into the social body of man.

Introduction. Strict performance requirements applied to civil servants, a high level of mental stress and of responsibility at the workplace can be considered as risk factors leading to the formation of a wide range of maladaptive reactions and states among civil servants - starting with specific mosaic domains and ending with nosologically defined mental disorders of neurotic genesis or psychosomatic illnesses, resulting in a state of psychological maladaptation. The purpose. Develop a program of psychological correction based on the detection of states of psychological maladaptation in civil servants. Materials and methods of the research. The main group consisted of 78 civil servants with the domain of psychological maladaptation, the experimental group consisted of 81 civil servants, among whose members no domain of psychological maladaptation was detected. Results. States of psychological maladaptation among civil servants were conceptualized as a holistic clinical and psychological, and socio-psychological phenomenon that has a multicomponent origin of biopsychosocial nature. We have identified the peculiarities of professional deformation and the psychoemotional state among the civil servants, and have determined the specifics of their mutual influence and the role of each parameter in the origin of the development of psychological maladaptation among the persons concerned. Conclusions. The study found that the essential factor in the formation of states of psychological maladaptation is the disparity between the level of stress caused by the working environment of a civil servant and his personal and adaptive resource base.

IntroductionIn connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, a lockdown was introduced everywhere in the Russian Federation, the main psychological feature of which is social deprivation - the deprivation or restriction of social habitual real interactions.ObjectivesDescribe clinical and psychological manifestations in children in the context of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.MethodsDuring the period from June to September 2020, parents of 108 children of early, preschool and school age applied for advice. Children are divided into two groups: I -children with previously established mental disorders; II - children who have not previously been observed for developmental disorder by a psychiatrist.ResultsParents of children applied for counselling with complaints of psychological, neurotic and psychosomatic symptoms that were present in children during the period of lockdown. It was found that the active use of electronic gadgets, an abundance of alarming information from the media, can cause disturbances in the family system and become an additional risk factor in the developmental disorders and an increase in the existing psychopathological symptoms in children. However, in young children with normative development and in some children with autism spectrum disorder, the phenomenon of social isolation did not reveal any pronounced changes in the mental state towards deterioration; on the contrary, in a number of cases there is a weakening of previously manifested deviations, apparently associated with increased communication with the loved ones and increased parental attention.ConclusionsClinical and psychological services should offer preventive support to the entire family.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

The subject of this research is the metaphysical aspects of Olympic endurance running in relation to formation of an athlete as a harmoniously developed personality. The relevance of this topic is substantiated by the need for elucidation of spiritual grounds of running as the most universal form of physical activity of an athlete. As a meaningful movement that takes place in cultural space, running is considered a social phenomenon and has transcendental dimension, since it is derived from the mental attitudes of the agent, impacting the agent and the social group the agent belongs to, as well as humanity overall. Namely endurance running, which suggests high incidence and agonal duration, allows us determining certain mental and willed attitudes of athletic (i.e., humanistic-oriented, Olympic) sports activity. The novelty of this research consists in the review of metaphysical foundations of running through the prism of the ideological grounds of Olympism. It is noted that of all the Olympic sports, endurance running is existentially rooted in a human, as humans outstrip all mammals namely in long-distance running. Olympic endurance running translates such social value attitudes as patriotism, sacrifice, self-cognition, commitment to one’s avocation, nobility, and honesty. An athlete formed through the Olympic running practices is oriented towards achieving kkalokagathia, as endurance running requires durable, optimized motor action, which ensures stable psychosomatic concentration, i.e. harmony of the spiritual beginning with the bodily.

COVID-19 dynamics and measures to control the pandemic have worldwide caused a high amount of mental and affective disturbances. Particularly children and adolescents have been confronted with home-schooling, domestic violence, social isolation and loneliness, existential issues, as well as the experience of multifaceted panicmongering and related pathological reactions. Although estimated prevalence rates of COVID-19 associated mental disorders vary across studies, there is a statistical tendency suggesting that about one third of the younger population exhibits serious psychiatric issues. As this quantity goes beyond the capacity of institutionalised psychiatric care, new models combining education and therapy are needed and are challenging today’s school systems. In Germany the COPSY study provided differential diagnostic data, and a music educational study used meta-synthetic methods to construct robust hypotheses which are considered stronger than usual hypotheses, but still need follow-up studies to explore underlying mechanisms and to estimate effect sizes. The related music-health-educational framework covers six key areas: (i) creative interaction to treat ‘coronanxiety’, (ii) focal listening to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders, (iii) vocal immersion to improve psychosomatic self-regulation, (iv) sound scene improvisation to enhance self-actualisation and relieve learned helplessness, (v) artistic expression to support coping processes and communication skills and (vi) the ‘Beloved Augustin phenomenon’ concerning the positive impact of arts and joy on the immune system. Actually these approaches are being examined for application in China, alongside socio-cultural adaptations, qualitative research and neuroscientific studies on underlying mechanisms.

Stress is a natural phenomenon designed to serve as the body's natural survival reaction to real or perceived threats. It is a complex and multifaceted function and its purpose is to allow organisms to adapt quickly to a potentially dangerous situation, promoting an individual's likelihood of survival. Stress levels peak markedly in a 'fight or flight' incident, then reduce again after danger has passed. Stress is designed to work in an acute situation, but when the stress becomes chronic – as is often the case in many modern lifestyles–the body remains constantly on high alert, potentially causing a number of stress-related symptoms. While the exact mechanisms behind it are not clearly understood, stress is recognised as having a major impact on overall human health and wellbeing and, indeed, may directly or indirectly lead to illnesses such as organic or functional disorders, cancer and mental health conditions. Mental health issues and stress-related diseases are becoming ever-more prevalent as modern lifestyles become more pressured, particularly within sub-populations such as those who work in hospitals and in industry. However, the general population is also becoming increasingly affected by stress. Professor Kenji Kanbara, from the Department of Clinical Psychology, Faculty of Medicine at Kagawa University in Japan, is a medical doctor who has an extensive experience in understanding more about stress-related illnesses. 'Psychosomatic processes are subconsciously progressive, and the health threat is significant for that reason,' he highlights. Thus, it is important to be able to recognise and deal with increased stress levels to forestall further health issues.

Dr Mark Honigsbaum, medical historian and senior lecturer, City University of London. A regular contributor to The Observer & The Lancet, the author of five books including The Pandemic Century: One Hundred Years of Panic, Hysteria, and Hubris (New York and London: Norton; Hurst, 2019), The Fever Trail: In Search of the Cure for Malaria (Farrar Straus Giroux, 2002), and Living With Enza: The Forgotten Story of Britain and the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918 (Macmillan, 2009), which was longlisted for the Royal Society science book of the year in 2009. A specialist in the history of pandemics and infectious disease, his academic work combines insights from the medical and environmental humanities and the philosophy and sociology of science. His current research focuses on the phenomenon of ‘vaccine hesitancy’. Through case studies of recent vaccine controversies he seeks to understand the role that the media and partial or incomplete scientific knowledge of vaccines plays in suspicion of this valuable medical technology. He is also developing a project interrogating the phenomenon of pandemic remembrance and the tension between narrative framings of Covid-19 as a ‘crisis’ and collective experiences of grief and loss enabled by connective digital technologies.AbstractPandemics of respiratory disease have long been associated with peculiar fatigue states and an array of neurological conditions. However, in the absence of compelling biological evidence, in practice it has proved difficult to differentiate these post-viral syndromes from wider epidemiological signals and medical syndromes.Focussing on the ‘Russian influenza’ pandemic of the 1890s, this talk examines the way in which Victorian nerve doctors sought to make sense of the peculiar nervous sequelae that trailed the pandemic. These sequels included nerve exhaustion, psychosis, insomnia and fatigue and, as with Long Covid, provoked disquisitions and disputes inThe Lancetand other medical journals.Unlike Long Covid, however, men were more likely to fall prey to these syndromes than women. The result was that rather than stigmatizing male sufferers as malingerers, Victorian neurologists provided a functional diagnosis, the ‘psychoses of influenza’. Drawing on notions of ‘overwork’ and ‘overworry’ and theories of entropy, the psychoses closely resembled neurasthenia and, I argue, provided a similarly acceptable label for a spectrum of somatic and psychosomatic disorders.

Background. The usage of psychoactive substances (PS) is one of the most urgent among other medical and social problems of nowadays. One of the aspects of menacing nature of this phenomenon is psychological and somatic consequences, so called comorbid conditions, which in the future lead to severe psychosomatic disorders, more significant in young or old age. Contemporary medical reform in Ukraine has reoriented for family doctors general medical care to somatic patients, which, in turn, requires the creation of professional scientific and practical developments to provide them with qualified assistance. Objective – to develop of the system of diagnostic and medical care for somatic patients who use PS in the practice of family medicine. Materials and methods. In accordance with the relevant methods (clinical, anamnestic, socio-demographic, psychodiagnostic, clinical-psychopathological and statistical), 220 thematic patients who applied with somatic complaints to the family doctor were examined. All these patients take different kinds of PS. Results. Characteristic features of the examined patients were such as: prevailing age group was the senior group of people (60%), the youngest was 38%; a large proportion of respondents were educated in dysfunctional families (42%); the families in which the parents use of PS, in the families in which there where systematic conflicts, material and everyday problems, burdened heredity, concomitant somatic diseases (28%), etc. Most of these surveyed began to use PS in the age of teenagers (66%), a significantly smaller number was that one who had begun to use PS in elderly age. The motivation for the usage of surfactant in the younger group was dominated by the negative impact of the micro-environment, at the elder age we diagnostic the subjective deprivation of the patients from difficult social circumstances, improvement of general mental and physical conditions. The complaints of these patients who need a help of family doctors were formed by us in the form of the main profiles of somatic pathology: cardiovascular, pulmonary-respiratory, gastro-intestinal. In the mental plan these patients had depressive, disturbing, asthenic states in different proportions. Most of them who use PS prefer tobacco and alcohol or combined forms (72%), much less patients use PS. The developed system of early diagnostics of comorbid pathology is based on a four-level clinical characteristic of psychosomatic pathology with the appropriate correlation between the type and level of PS which had been used. Conclusions. The main profiles of somatization in these cases were outlined (48% of patients have the problems with the cardiovascular system, with the digestive tract – 32%, with the pulmonary-respiratory system – 20% of patients), which were combined with mental illnesses. The system of early diagnostics of the usage of psychoactive substances by somatic patients was developed with the help of corresponding AUDIT-tests, a number of parallel psycho-diagnostic methods and laboratory data. On the basis of characteristic features of anamnesis, socio-demographic, clinical psycho-pathological and somatic data, a system of psycho-therapeutic, rehabilitation and psycho-prophylaxis assistance to the patients in the practice of family medicine was developed.

The article reviewed the modern empirical studies of alexithymia, summarized the theoretical understanding of the phenomenon of alexithymia, describes the difficulties faced by the people with a high level of alexithymia and suggested tips on psychological work with the alexithymic people. The novelty of this research consists in the formulation of the aspects of the practical work of a psychologist in order to increase the level of the adaptation of the alexithymics and improve the quality of their life. At the moment, this problem is covered in only a small amount of research. The main result of the article is the identification of the areas of psychological work with the alexithymics: (1) the improvement of the connection with the body; (2) the correction of personality problems; (3) the psychological assistance in the harmonization of the interpersonal relations. It has been shown that disrupted connection with the body is one of the most significant problems of the alexithymics and the factor which contributes to the development of psychosomatic diseases. For the improvement of the connection with the body the authors suggest such types of psychological work as the differentiation of physical feelings, a fuller understanding of the body map, the ability to control the condition of the body, the acceptance of the body and the increase in the satisfaction with it. The ways of working with the most significant personality problems of the alexithymics are singled out (correction of non-adaptive coping-strategies, low level of life satisfaction, rigidity, and instability of the emotional sphere). The areas of work on improving the relations of the alexithymics with the surrounding people are highlighted (gaining more knowledge about the emotional sphere, working with friends and relatives, teaching communication skills, taking into account the influence of alexithymia). Finally, the conclusion is made about the importance of the integrated psychological work with the people with a high level of alexithymia in order to develop the specific tools for comprehensive assistance to alexithymics.
