The variable-centered approach is favored in management and applied psychology, but the person-centered approach is quickly growing in popularity. A partial cause for this rise is the finer-grained detail that it allows. Many researchers may be unaware, however, that another approach may provide even finer-grained detail: the person-specific approach. In the current article, we (a) detail the purpose of each approach, (b) describe how to determine when each approach is most appropriate, and (c) delineate when the approaches diverge to give differing results. Through achieving these goals, we suggest that no single approach is the “best.” Instead, the choice of approach should be guided by the research question. To further emphasize this point, we provide illustrative examples using real data to answer three distinct research questions. The results show that each research question can be fully addressed only by the appropriate approach. To conclude, we directly suggest certain research areas that may benefit from the application of person-centered and person-specific approaches. Together, we believe that discussing variable-centered, person-centered, and person-specific approaches together may provide a more thorough understanding of each.

The matter of whether the Gestalt-Therapy and Person Centered Approach are phenomenological approaches is controversial in the contemporary scenario of humanistic psychology in Brazil. In 1991, Luis Claudio Figueiredo published a book about the main stream psychological thoughts, in which both approaches are considered not phenomenological. This article intends to make a contribution to this discussion by establishing a dialog between the Person Centered Approach and Gestalt- Therapy with the psychological main streams as conceived by the author.

Person-centered approaches have been demonstrated to be effective in a variety of mental healthcare contexts and across different service user populations. In this overview, the author explores fundamental notions of such person-centered approaches (PCAs) with examples from health (clinical) care, research, education, and leadership of successful person-centered applications in the mental health field. He then extends this conversation further by looking at related challenges, particularly where person-centered approaches are lacking and may be applied. He challenges various areas in mental health services by addressing commonplace examples in which person-centered approaches do not appear to occur. He concludes with a call to action for profound person-centered change at the level of self and with others, which may lead to fundamental transformation of the mental health system.

Abstract Person-centered mealtime care is highly recommended in dementia care. While current research examined associative relationships between person- and task-centered care and resident mealtime behaviors, few studies evaluated their temporal associations. Videotaped mealtime observations (N=160) involving 36 staff and 27 residents (53 staff-resident dyads) in 9 nursing homes were coded. Staff person-centered and task-centered approaches were conceptualized as antecedents of resident positive behaviors, functional impairments, and resistive behaviors using 5-, 10-, and 15-second time windows. Immediately after staff person-centered approaches, resident positive and resistive behaviors were more likely (p range=<.001–.29) and functional impairments less likely (p range=<.001–.62) with diminished effects in time. Immediately after staff task-centered approaches, resident positive behaviors were less likely (p range=<.001–.09). Person-centered mealtime care should be individualized, context-based, and resident-oriented. Resident resistiveness to care may be behavioral responses to person-centered care indicating mismatch to individual preferences and needs, warranting adequate awareness and appropriate assessment.

This paper proposes that the adoption of a Biosocial/Psychospiritual model, and a relational Body/Mind/Spirit approach (RBMS) to health care delivery will encourage increased awareness of the contribution of religious belief and spiritual Practice to health care provision. Problems of definition are outlined. The writings of Paul Tournier and in particular his concept of Medécine de la Personne (Healing of Persons) are considered and the educational challenges of these approaches briefly outlined.

There are various models and approaches to counseling and psychotherapy. Important characteristics of therapists include psychological type. This study aimed to investigate the psychological type profile of person-centered counselors. The psychological type of 85 counselors (63 women, 22 men) was measured with the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS). Results indicate that the FPTS can reliably measure psychological type among counselors, and the most common psychological type was introvert, intuitive, feeling, and judging (INFJ). The relation of these psychological types with a person-centered approach is further discussed.

Abstract How behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are understood and managed is important to person-centered care. No knowledge tests associated with dementia specifically address staff knowledge of person-centered behavioral approaches to BPSD. The Knowledge of Person-Centered Behavioral Approaches for BPSD Test was developed by our team to fill that gap. We tested the reliability and validity of this measure using a Rasch analysis and additional psychometric testing. 1,071 nurses from 35 nursing homes participated in the study. Reliability was evident based on an item separation of 11.00 and item reliability of 0.99. Construct validity was evident in that all of the items fit the model with INFIT and OUTFIT statistics (0.6-1.4). Associations between test scores and observed positive and negative care interactions (r=.38, p=.03; r=-.26, p=.12), person-centered care approaches (r=-.25, p=.15), and resistance to care (r=-.31, p=.07) will be examined and implications for person-centered care discussed.

This article provides a review and synthesis of person-centered analytic (i.e., clustering) methods in organizational psychology with the aim of (a) placing them into an organizing framework to facilitate analysis and interpretation and (b) constructing a set of practical recommendations to guide future person-centered research. To do so, we first clarify the terminological and conceptual issues that still cloud person-centered approaches. Next, we organize the diverse kinds of person-centered analyses into two major statistical approaches, algorithmic and latent-variable approaches. We then present a literature review that quantifies how these two approaches have been used within our field, identifying trends over time and typical study characteristics. Out of this review, we construct a unifying taxonomy of the five ways in which clusters are differentiated: (1) construct-based patterns, (2) response-style patterns, (3) predictive relations, (4) growth trajectories, and (5) measurement models. We also provide a set of practical guidelines for researchers and highlight a few remaining questions and/or areas in which future work is needed for further advancing person-centered methodologies.

The 2011 Organizational Research Methods Feature Topic on latent class procedures has helped to establish person-centered analyses as a method of choice in the organizational sciences. This establishment has contributed to the generation of substantive-methodological synergies leading to a better understanding of a variety of organizational phenomena and to an improvement in research methodologies. The present Feature Topic aims to provide a user-friendly introduction to these new methodological developments for applied organizational researchers. Organized around a presentation of the typological, prototypical, and methodologically exploratory nature of person-centered analyses, this introductory article introduces seven contributions aiming to: (a) clarify the meaning, advantages, and applications of person-centered analyses; (b) illustrate emerging prototypical and longitudinal cluster analytic approaches; (c) introduce researchers to multilevel person-centered analyses as well as to auxiliary approaches that will drastically increase the scope of application of these methods; and (d) describe the application of these methods for confirmatory purposes.

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is devastating the well-being of college students and society. This article examines the need for attention to collegiate mental health during public health emergencies, with a particular focus on college students in urban settings. The article begins with a brief description of the unique challenges faced by cities during pandemics and continues with a historical overview of pandemics. College students attending three public colleges (n = 719) were surveyed regarding the impact of COVID-19 on their psychological health. Preliminary findings reveal a prevalence of students (44.9%) reporting moderate or severe traumatic stress symptoms in response to COVID-19 stressors. A definition of what we define as “astonishing” is the high trending prevalence of college students reporting that they know someone who died due to COVID-19 (70.6%). The article concludes with recommendations for future research and offers person-centered approaches for social workers and leadership in higher education.

Abstract Person-centered initiatives and approaches are the cornerstone of best practices when it comes to supporting older adults and persons living with dementia. Lack of person-centered care has been associated with higher medical costs and negative health outcomes, particularly in low-resource communities. Implementing person-centered care may help to address disparities and improve care outcomes in these communities, although it is often unclear which approaches are most appropriate. The Person-Centered Options Counseling Certification program attempts to address this gap via a mentoring program and competency framework. Developed and piloted in rural New Hampshire, this framework helps professionals and organizations evaluate the approaches that works best for them, while creating fidelity for ongoing support through a rigorous mentorship program. The framework shows promise of being cost effective, an important consideration for many low-resource communities. Professionals can attain knowledge, skills, and abilities without incurring higher education costs and agencies can utilize pre-developed instructional materials. Pilot data was collected to evaluate the program and demonstrated that professionals found the educational training delivered within the framework was relevant to their community and increased their knowledge about person-centered care, although some expressed hesitancy when applying the skills learned with individuals. Professionals who completed both the training and participated in the mentorship program reported a high level of competency, satisfaction, and confidence in delivering person-centered care. The use of this framework may support staff retention in low-resource communities and approaches can be tailored across different environments to facilitate the delivery of person-centered care.

Abstract Person-centered caregiving approaches emphasize efforts to protect and maintain the personhood of people living with dementia (PLWD). The influence on person-centered caregiving approaches on PLWD have predominantly focused on deficit-oriented outcomes, such as absence or reduction of behavioral symptoms. While important to quality of life, the absence of measurable “positive” responses to person-centered caregiving approaches limit opportunities to specify sensitive and meaningful outcome measures that more holistically represent PLWD’s care experiences as more than the absence of a negative outcome. To address these gaps, we conducted a secondary analysis of video-observations of PLWD (N=9) surrounding mealtime cares using a descriptive ethnographic approach. Our objectives were to descriptively summarize specific responsive behaviors demonstrated by PLWD surrounding person-centered caregiving interactions, specifying observable features of these responses and consider their utility in future video-observational research. Findings indicate PLWD contribute both verbal and non-verbal communication surrounding person-centered approaches which can be characterized as conversational (starting conversation, answering or asking questions), expressing preferences (indicating needs and preferences, agreeing or disagreeing, complying with or refusing caregiver requests, permission granting), emotional responses (mirroring caregivers’ emotions, demonstrating emotion e.g. smiling), and reflexive (mirroring of caregiver’s actions), with overlap between categories. Findings suggest that PLWD not only contribute and respond in meaningful ways to person-centered interactions, but also initiate a significant number of these interactions. This study contributes to a growing body of research and advocacy that examines the personhood and abilities of PLWD and establishes the utility of observational data in studying PLWD contributions.

Background: The National Health Service (NHS) was established in 1948 as a publicly funded healthcare system in the UK providing universal health coverage that is comprehensive, equitable and free at the point of delivery. The British experience of person centered medicine (PCM) is enshrined in the NHS constitution. Objectives: The objective of this study was to highlight important developments in and evolution of PCM within the NHS in person-centered care (PCC), research and innovations in undergraduate and graduate health education. Methods: This is a narrative overview of the British experience of PCM. Results: It is evident that the British experience and practice of PCM have evolved naturistically over seven decades since the establishment of the NHS. Academic research groups in collaboration with the NHS have introduced person-centered models of care supported by pivotal research in practice. Importantly, person-centered nursing has been widely adopted following the early development of a framework for person-centered nursing and its extensive evaluation. There emerged many initiatives on PCM by National Voices, the Health Foundation, British medical schools and the Royal Medical Colleges. The landmark development was the production by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK of the first blueprint for a postgraduate psychiatric curriculum that is in tune with person-centered psychiatry. Conclusions: It is envisaged that the NHS will evolve and increasingly promote, adopt, codesign and implement PCC approaches adapted to the local, regional and national contexts including services redesign, health education and applied health research. These innovations contribute to the universal development of person-centered healthcare and health education.

Person-centered care at the end of life is an area of medicine we must all be familiar and comfortable with. This is the case as it will involve not only the people we care for but also our own family members, loved ones, and eventually ourselves. Forty percent of all health care dollars in the United States health care system are spent in the last two years of a person’s life unless meaningful person-centered discussions occur. Providing person-centered care for the remaining months of a person’s life is of extreme importance in helping people achieve their wishes and goals, maximize palliation, comfort, dignity, and quality of life. This paper will focus on maximizing person-centered approaches of active listening and discussion, advanced care planning, clear communication, timely engagement of support services, family support, and compassion. Our goal with person-centered care at the end of life is to allow as many people as possible a good death.

Abstract Person-centered care that supports choice and autonomy of residents is foundational to implementing high quality care for long-term care residents including those living with dementia. Organizational change that supports person-centered approaches requires leadership engagement and a stable, well-qualified dementia-capable workforce. This paper uses survey data from a statewide probability sample of nursing homes and their staff (N=438) to identify barriers and facilitators to person-centered care. Findings show key barriers to delivering person-centered care, including a lack of staff empowerment practices and irregular use of consistent assignment. While most organizations are implementing some person-centered resident care practices, few have moved beyond predominantly institutional practices. Staff stability and retention also remain key barriers to person-centered care. Facilitators include adoption of evidence-based and inclusive quality improvement strategies. The paper will discuss implications for state, community and organizational strategies for improving staff empowerment, integrating dementia care competencies, promoting culture change and increasing leadership engagement.

Abstract: Capacity-building in trauma-informed care and harm reduction approaches with Southern HIV service organizations must be implemented in ways that foster trust and spur organizational change. Using an equity-centered implementation science framework, this study examines implementation strategies of the SUSTAIN COMPASS Coordinating Center's person-centered care (PCC) capacity-building interventions. Methods. Fifty-eight (58) in-depth qualitative interviews with staff (N=116) who received PCC capacity-building were analyzed using modified grounded theory. Results. Analysis identified four factors of equity-centered implementation that facilitated PCC capacity-building implementation. 1) Innovation factors : SUSTAIN models PCC approaches when implementing PCC capacity-building. 2) Inner factors : SUSTAIN employs PCC approaches. 3) Outer factors : SUSTAIN highlights socio-political factors that may influence PCC implementation. 4) Bridging factors : SUSTAIN facilitates partnerships to promote PCC learning and sustainability. Conclusion. SUSTAIN PCC capacity-building advances health equity through operationalizing personcentered care in capacity-building implementation.

Abstract Mealtime is an important daily activity to ensure intake. Person-centered and task-centered care may influence individual positive, neutral, and challenging mealtime behaviors. Yet, little work has fully examined their relationships. This study aimed to examine the association between person-centered and task-centered care approaches and individuals’ positive, neutral, and challenging mealtime behaviors. This secondary analysis of 110 videotaped mealtime observations involved 29 staff and 25 residents with dementia (42 unique staff-resident dyads) in 9 nursing homes. Videos were coded using the refined Cue Utilization and Engagement in Dementia mealtime video-coding scheme. Logistic regression models were fit to four dependent variables representing resident mealtime behaviors: 1) positive/neutral behaviors (nonverbal), 2) positive utterances (verbal), 3) functional impairments (nonverbal), and 4) resistive behaviors (verbal and nonverbal). Independent variables were staff person-centered care modifications (nonverbal), person-centered utterances (verbal), and task-centered behaviors (verbal and nonverbal). Covariates included resident age, gender, eating function, and video duration. Resident positive utterances were associated with staff person-centered care utterances (OR =1.38, 95% CI = 1.09,1.76). Resident functional impairments were associated with staff person-centered care modifications (OR=1.33, 95% CI=1.02, 1.74) and fewer staff person-centered utterances (OR=0.81, 95% CI=0.66, 1.00). Resident resistive behaviors were associated with more staff person-centered utterances (OR=1.65, 95% CI=1.18, 2.31). Findings provided preliminary information supporting the role of staff person-centered care on resident positive and challenging mealtime behaviors. Findings inform use of verbal and nonverbal person-centered care strategies to improve positive communication and reduce challenging behaviors during mealtime in people with dementia.

This article argues that the popular, but at times, misapplied approaches of person-centered planning can be remedied through scientific practices. Person-centered planning is described in the context of an evolving disabilities culture that is selecting practices that achieve the values of the new paradigm. Operationalizing outcomes that constitute aspects of quality of life (QOL) can be challenging, but the main obstacle to an empirical analysis of person-centered planning appears to be reliable implementation of its complex process. Resolution of these problems is seen as a cutting edge for expanding our applied research technology in assisting people with disabilities achieve the values to which they aspire.

The person-centered counseling approach has evolved in applications ranging from nondirective, client-centered, and student-centered to people-centered approaches. This paper describes the application of person-centered counseling in guidance and counseling services. The research method used a literature study. The results of the study and analysis were synthesized using a narrative method by grouping information or data according to the objectives of the study. The results showed that in order to truly achieve effective results from the implementation of person-centered counseling, the main attitudes the counselor needs to have are conformity, unconditional positive understanding, and understanding of empathy. The results of the study can also be discussed topics in group guidance services, individual counseling, and group counseling.

Abstract Many older adults living in long-term care have dementia sufficiently severe to interfere with the performance of basic activities of daily living; this number is expected to increase rapidly. Although resistive behaviors are common among long-term care residents with dementia during care, caregivers face difficulty to prevent and manage them. The purpose of this study was to examine how caregivers responded to resistiveness to care of persons living with dementia. We analyzed 107 videos from 24 residents with dementia and 34 caregivers in four long-term care facilities. Each interaction between resident with dementia and caregiver was taken nine times at 0, 3, and 6 months at three care events (i.e., personal care, mealtime, and activity). Resistiveness to care was assessed using the Resistiveness to Care Scale for Dementia of the Alzheimer’s Type; caregiving approaches were coded by the Person-Centered Behavior Inventory and the Task-Centered Behavior Inventory. Lag sequential analysis was conducted to examine caregiving approaches right after resistive behaviors of residents with dementia. We analyzed 25.1 hours of care events; 544 episodes of resistiveness to care were observed. When residents with dementia showed resistiveness to care, caregivers provided person-centered behaviors in 34.4% of cases, task-centered behaviors in 35.8% of cases, and nothing in 29.8% of cases. Caregivers used task-centered care approaches or nothing to manage resistiveness to care in more than 65% of cases. It is recommended to provide person-centered caregiving approaches to deal with resistiveness to care among persons living with dementia.

Whereas research on generalized prejudice is dominated by variable-centered approaches, which focus on communalities between different types of prejudice, we propose a complementary person-centered approach, looking for subgroups of people characterized by similar patterns of prejudice. To this end, we compare the results of a variable-centered (using confirmatory factor analysis [CFA]) and a person-centered (using latent class analysis [LCA]) approach to generalized prejudice. While CFA points to a multidimensional solution with a strong overlap between prejudice dimensions, LCA distinguishes five prejudice patterns that cannot be organized along a linear continuum of more versus less prejudiced dispositions. Explanatory models for the two solutions are estimated. Results show that the two methods are largely complementary in conceptualizing generalized prejudice.

Abstract Person-centered care is the standard of practice in communal living sites, yet many facilities struggle to make this a reality. Both direct care staff and administrators find residents’ behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) particularly challenging. Our research team is conducting a pragmatic trial, the goal of which is to help staff use person-centered, non-pharmacological approaches for these symptoms. During the past three years we have gained insights into what may affect the ability of staff to deliver high quality person-centered care. We share these insights in this symposium. In the first paper, the investigators present data indicating that a high rate of psychotropic drug use among residents with dementia persists despite little association to BPSD, and bring into question the need for education around de-prescribing practices. In the second paper, the investigators discuss the conceptual basis and empirical evidence for using affect balance, in addition to symptom reduction, as an important and meaningful outcome for residents. The third paper examines gender differences in the expression of BPSD and how these differences may work to limit staff ability to identify treatment approaches for women who, nonetheless, have significant symptoms. In the final paper the psychometric properties and results of a new Knowledge of Person-centered Approaches for BPSD Test, that was developed by the team and given to staff, are examined and the implications of the findings for the delivery of person-centered care are considered. The discussant will reflect on these findings and provide direction for future research and practice.

PurposeDrawing on the organizational psychology literature and social resource theory, this research aimed to investigate how attitude toward the employer (i.e. loyalty) and attitude toward the client (i.e. approach to work: professional, market-oriented and person-centered) relate to the perceived importance of socio-emotional resources in providing care to older people.Design/methodology/approachSwedish frontline care staff members participated in an electronic survey using a cross-sectional design. Mediation analyses were conducted to examine proposed direct and indirect effects of loyalty on the perceived importance of socio-emotional resources in care through three different approaches to work in care settings.FindingsIn general, the results confirmed the hypotheses. Thus, the analyses showed a positive association between employee loyalty and the perceived value of socio-emotional resources in care, which was partially mediated by the person-centered and professional approaches to work. Moreover, the analyses showed that the person-centered approach was more strongly related to the perceived value of socio-emotional resources in care than the other two approaches, lending support to the superiority of the person-centered approach in this context.Originality/valueThe study highlights that there exist multiple approaches to work in care settings. Also, the insights about how loyalty toward the employer relates to approach to work in care settings and the perceived value of socio-emotional resources in care are novel and of crucial importance to practitioners and the outcomes of care.

In this narrative review, we explore the latest evidence on semantic interventions for older adults, including both prevention and rehabilitation/remediation efforts, discussing them particularly in the context of dementia. Cognitive interventions vary in their level of structure, encompassing standardized (task-focused tasks) and unstandardized tasks (person-centered tasks). These interventions also differ in their target: rehabilitation or prevention. Addressing semantic knowledge/semantic memory/semantics is important, primarily because its efficiency impacts other cognitive domains. Semantic tasks are commonly included in preventive and rehabilitation programs, typically as standardized tasks with pre-defined semantic referents. On the other hand, person-centered approaches introduce personally relevant semantics, allowing patients to share thoughts and experiences with expressive language. Although these approaches offer benefits beyond cognitive improvement, their lack of structure may pose challenges. Our question club (CQ) program blends structured activities with personally relevant semantics, aiming to harness the advantages of both methods. Additionally, in this narrative review, we discuss future challenges and directions in the field of semantic interventions.
