Intimate relationships, including romantic, marital, and sexual relationships, are a fundamental aspect of life and a right for everyone. However, despite their desire to take on social roles such as spouse, lover, or partner, persons with mental illness, such as schizophrenia, are less likely to develop such relationships. According to the International Classification of Functioning, which serves as the theoretical framework for this doctoral work, this situation reflects a significant participation restriction in the area of intimate relationships (World Health Organization, 2001). Although person-centered approaches, such as recovery-oriented and rights-based approaches, fully legitimize professional involvement in this domain, mental health practices remain insufficient or inadequate. Within this context, the INTIMate research program was developed to promote intimate relationships for persons living with mental illness by improving the support they receive. To achieve this goal, four studies were conducted. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify interventions aimed at promoting intimate relationships for persons with serious mental illness. The results revealed a lack of scientifically validated interventions, which may constitute a barrier to evidence-based support. To gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of participation restriction and the factors influencing it, a second study aimed to characterize the frequency and impact of barriers and facilitators of intimate relationships. This descriptive and comparative study was conducted among the general population and persons living with schizophrenia. The latter group perceives the impact of personal factors (particularly those related to self-concept), impairments (e.g., cognitive difficulties), and environmental factors (such as stigma) on their intimate relationships. Given that stigma was identified as a major barrier, this doctoral work subsequently focused on studying public stigma and self-stigma. A third study, using a mixed-method approach, identified stereotypes about the intimate relationships of persons living with schizophrenia among the general population, healthcare students, and professionals. It also highlighted potential pathways for reducing this stigma. Finally, a fourth study was conducted at the University of Montreal, in collaboration with patient partners, to develop and validate a scale assessing self-stigma in intimate relationships. In conclusion, this doctoral work presents promising perspectives for enhancing support in intimate relationships for persons living with mental illness. However, further studies are needed to promote evidence-based support that aligns with the preferences for those concerned. In accordance with national and international recommendations, this work advocates for holistic approaches aimed at achieving full social participation, such as recovery-oriented and rights-based approaches (Coldefy, 2022; WHO, 2021)
Stock, Debbie G. "Exploring Person-Centered Accountability as a Complementary Approach to Regulatory-Centered Accountability| An Action Research Study." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3728217.
Accountability in healthcare tends to dominate discussions focused on improving the quality of care, the experience of patients, pay-for-performance, and engaging employees to produce positive performance outcomes. Organizational leaders are held to answer to external regulatory agencies about performance outcomes based on prescribed standards. Frequently, these agencies adopt a punitive approach by imposing rewards and penalties for achieving or failing to meet the performance standards. Furthering the challenges, organizational leaders are expected to model accountability, hold employees accountable, and be a source for inspiration and motivation. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to examine person-centered accountability (PCA), or the use of positive leadership, positive practices, and positive emotions, as a complementary approach to regulatory-centered accountability (RCA). Six workshops influenced by appreciative inquiry, a practice period, participant journals, interviews and the use of a portable biofeedback device to measure positive emotions were all utilized to develop an understanding of participant’s experiences and perceptions about the value of PCA and RCA. Participants were clinical and non-clinical leaders at a Midwest medical center. Results from this study revealed the participants’ perception about the holistic and interdependent nature of PCA and RCA. Integrating PCA and RCA requires a change in philosophies as well as day-to-day accountability practices. Leaders and employees need to use both PCA and RCA to improve performance outcomes, therefore, it is important to create an organizational reset to change beliefs about accountability, build leadership capacity, and invest in employees. Future research is needed to evaluate the long-term impact of PCA and RCA on performance outcomes in and out of healthcare.

Studies suggest that nearly two-thirds of women fake or have faked orgasm, yet few researchers have explicitly examined this phenomenon. Previous studies have identified some group differences between women who fake orgasm and those who do not on dimensions of sexual experience, emotion regulation, intimacy, relationship status, and sexual functioning. To date, research into this phenomenon has relied solely on variable-centered analyses (e.g., exploratory factor analysis, correlation, and regression). This study used a person-centered approach (i.e., latent class analysis; LCA) to explore differences in women's motives across individuals, using scores from the Faking Orgasm Scale. A 5-class model was determined to be most interpretable and the best fitting to the data. Classes included low, moderate, and high frequency faking orgasm, partner-focused faking orgasm, and pleasure-focused faking orgasm. These classes were then compared on dimensions of sexual functioning, intimacy, and emotion regulation, as well as demographic variables (e.g., age, length of relationship, number of sexual partners). Significant differences were found in sexual desire, sexual activity, and orgasmic consistency, but not in sexual satisfaction. Significant differences were also evidenced in intimacy, general level of emotion dysregulation, and across various dimensions of emotion regulation. No differences across classes were revealed on age, length of relationship, or number of sexual partners. These findings can serve as the foundation for further exploration into understanding women's various styles of interacting sexually with a partner and may have implications for couples therapy, sex therapy, and individual interventions for women struggling with physical and/or emotional intimacy with a partner.

This study documents an experience in which a small group of cognitively and developmentally disabled adults expressed their personal goals and views related to art museum visits. A review of literature related to disability studies, museum access and inclusive programs, art therapy, and person-centered thinking provide background and context. Case study and qualitative interviews are used as methodologies to support an investigation of the use of person-centered thinking in the implementation of art museum programming for the study participants. Person-centered thinking is considered and assessed as an approach to structuring meaningful collaborations between visitors with disabilities and art museums. Data collected in the forms of visual and written response, observation, and documentation of interviews inform the findings, discussion, and analysis of the study’s research goals. The resulting case study may be used by museums to structure visits with similar groups. This study contributes to a growing body of knowledge pertaining to how museums can best collaborate with disabled populations to create inclusive programs.

This dissertation is to develop a historical object of emergence of Person Centred Approach (PCA) in Brazil, with special observance to the Rio-São Paulo in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970. The ACP is part of the so-called humanistic psychology, a movement initially organized by the american psychologist Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) in the 1950s, which saw the participation of strong Carl Rogers (1902-1987), also American psychologist and founder of the currently named the Person Centred Approach. The professional trajectory of Rogers was marked by the events of his time, as the american economic crisis of the 1930s, Worldwide War, the Cold War and by ethnic, religious and racial global conflicts. For a better understanding the development of ACP, this was narrated in conjunction with the main political, economic and cultural history of U.S., seeking construct a narrative historically situated. The same was done to the history of ACP in Brazil, in the decades from 1950 to 1970, emphasizing the political rulers goal of transforming Brazil into a great nation in cultural and educational for it is worth creating several institutions devoted to children, adolescents and young adults for their psychological care, educational, vocational guidance and technician improvement. The establishment of civil-military dictatorship that began in 1964, the process of regulating the profession of psychologist and the creation of first courses in psychology in Brazil are highlighted. Register the history of ACP in Brazil is a task that is justified given the contingent of professionals theoretical engaged and to encourage research into the history of psychology. The methodology of work adopted was the oral report and literature review instrumentalized by interviews with prominent professionals relevance in the history of ACP in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. This study is the final milestone coming of Carl Rogers and his team in 1977 to Brazil for the realization of the First Brazilian Meeting Focused on Person (Arcozelo I), which allowed the meeting, recognition and mutual exchange of experience among Brazilian professionals, thus closing the period of the emergency and the ACP in Brazil favoring a new phase of development across the country.

This study constitutes of a qualitative research with a descriptive and exploratory character. It intends to contribute to a discussion of ethics in clinical practice, with reference to the radical ethics of Emmanuel Levinas and the Person-Centered Psychotherapy. The overall goal is to understand the possibilities of opening to radical alterity in the therapeutic relationship from discourses of person-centered psychotherapists about their clinical practice. Thus, we performed semi-structured interviews with five psychotherapists about the unexpected experiences in their clinical practice. The interpretation of the discourses was inspired in Derrida's hermeneutics, focusing on how the idea of deconstruction was proposed, allowing the arising of the difference in speech itself. In the deconstruction of the discourses we get closer to potential areas of openness to otherness in the therapeutic relationship, talking about the therapist vulnerability and responsibility against the unexpected. In a welcoming position the therapist would have to allow the use of his sensitivity and the intuition in their attendance, being with the client in its suffering, from the facilitative attitudes as enablers of a understanding of the client as an enigma.

Повний текст джерелаO envelhecimento populacional se, por um lado, representa uma conquista das sociedades, por outro constitui-se um dos maiores desafios do século. Não só por se traduzir no aumento da população mais velha mas também, tendo em conta a transição epidemiológica, por as doenças crónicas se tornarem mais prevalentes, como a demência. Portugal, segundo a OCDE (2017), considera-se o 4º país da OCDE com mais pessoas com demência por cada mil habitantes. O elevado quantitativo de pessoas com demência também se replica nas respostas socias, onde 90% dos idosos nos lares tem alterações cognitivas. Neste grupo, 78% tem demência, segundo a União das Misericórdias Portuguesas - projeto VIDAS. Torna-se pertinente verificar como as Estruturas Residenciais para a Pessoa Idosa (ERPI) se organizam na prestação de cuidados às pessoas com demência. A literatura existente apresenta a abordagem centrada na pessoa com demência como ideal desafiador do modelo biomédico, colocando ao centro da sua intervenção a escolha e autonomia pessoais. Os estudos da cultura organizacional desenvolvem também pesquisas relacionadas com o funcionamento e prestação de serviços em ERPI. O objetivo da pesquisa consistiu em caracterizar a cultura organizacional de ERPI em Portugal, na perspetiva dos profissionais, segundo a abordagem centrada na pessoa com demência. Participaram na pesquisa quatro ERPI, com mais de 1/3 de residentes com demência. Os funcionários foram inquiridos mediante a aplicação de questionários construídos a partir de dimensões e indicadores da abordagem em estudo, subdivididos em quatro grupos: Diretor Técnico; Técnicos Superiores/Profissionais; Auxiliares de Ação Direta; Funcionários da Cozinha. De forma geral, os resultados revelam que, para além das ERPI conseguirem cumprir alguns indicadores afetos à abordagem, verificam-se lacunas nas áreas: horário de visita; avaliação da qualidade de serviços e bem-estar; gestão de vagas e decisão de integração em ERPI. especialização em cuidados; formação em cuidados em demência; recursos humanos;
Population aging, on the one hand, represents an achievement within society, on the other hand it is one of the greatest challenges of the century. Not only because it translates into an increase in the older population, but also taking into account the epidemiological transition due to chronic illnesses becoming more prevalent, such as dementia. Portugal, according to OCDE (2017), is considered the fourth country of OCDE with most people with dementia per thousand inhabitants. The high number of people with dementia is also evident in the data collected, where 90% of the eldrely in nursing homes have cognitive impairment. Within this group, 78% have dementia, according to the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas - project VIDAS`. It becomes relevant to examine how the Estruturas Residenciais para a Pessoa Idosa (ERPI) are organized to provide care for people with dementia. Existing literature presents the person-centered approach with dementia as a challenging ideal of the biomedical model, placing at the center of its intervention personal choice and autonomy. Organizational culture studies also develop research related to the functioning and service provision of ERPI. The goal of this research was to characterize the organizational culture of ERPI in Portugal, from the perspective of professionals, according to the approach focused on people with dementia. Four ERPI participated in this research, with more than 1/3 of residents with dementia. Employees were surveyed by applying questionnaires built on dimensions and indicators of the approach under study, subdivided into four groups: Technical Director; Senior / Professional Technicians; Certified Nursing Assistants; Kitchen staff. Overall, the results show that, in addition to the ERPI being able to meet some indicators related to the approach, there are gaps in the areas: specialization in care; training in dementia care; Human Resources; visiting time; quality of service and welfare assessment; vacancy management and ERPI integration decision.

Results: The results indicates that it is important that the patient's need for security, well-being and dignity must be fulfilled for the experience of good palliative care. The need for security includes that care should be easily accessible, coordinated and continuous, and nursing stuff be competent and communicate in a straightforward and adapted manner. Patients also believe that adequate symptomrelief, a homelike environment and a meaningful life are important for experiencing well-being. Patients believes as well that when they maintaine independence and ascendant as well as when nursing staff show a good attitude, they experience dignity. Conclusion: The results complies with the basic view of palliative care presented in the literature and demonstrate the patient´s specific needs for safety, dignity and well-being. This can provide an increased understanding of the importance of a person-centered approach as the results show that the needs of patients are individual.

In the psycho-social domain, the term resilience refers to the individual’s ability to successfully adapt to environment and social contexts. A major feature of resilient people is their flexibility in responding to external events, exploiting their own self-regulation systems in an adaptive way. Recent typological studies, based on a person-centered approach, have connected specific configurations of personality traits with differences in the individual’s ability to regulate impulses and to implement adaptive behaviors. Three personality profiles, albeit with some variability, have been replicated in different samples and cultures: Resilient, Overcontrolled and Undercontrolled. Starting from these premises, this study aims at: (1) identifying the presence of the three personality profiles in a sample recruited within the Italian adult population; (2) evaluating the differences among Resilient, Overcontrolled and Undercontrolled in relation to adult attachment styles, subjective well-being, emotion regulation strategies and coping style in the face of stress and everyday problems. The sample consisted of 474 participants aged 20-60 (55.3% women) living in urban areas and with either an high school diploma or higher educational degree. Participants were asked to fill in a personality questionnaire (Big Five Inventory, BFI) along with a test battery comprising the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and the Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (COPE-NVI). Cluster Analysis was carried out on the Big-Five personality dimensions, in order to identify different groups of participants. Subsequently, a double cross-validation procedure confirmed the internal consistency of the three cluster solution; participants in these three groups were characterized by personality structures corresponding to the Resilient, Overcontrolled and Undercontrolled prototypes. Profile differences were assessed through a series of Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Discriminant Analyses and Post-Hoc univariate comparisons. The Resilient profile showed the highest values in secure attachment and life satisfaction, along with an affective tone characterized by the highest levels of positive emotions and the lowest levels of negative emotions compared with the other two profiles; participants in this group also showed a higher frequency of coping styles involving an active approach to problems. Compared with Resilients, Overcontrolled and Undercontrolled participants reported lower levels of confidence in others and higher levels of insecure attachment, in both the anxious and avoidant components; these groups showed lower levels of subjective well-being and a lower frequency of engagement coping styles. In particular, participants in the Undercontrolled cluster reported the highest level of negative emotions, the highest frequency of coping strategies aimed at avoiding problems, seeking understanding and support from other people and expressing their emotions. Overcontrolled individuals reported instead the lowest level of confidence in others, the highest level of avoidant attachment and an affective tone characterized by the lowest presence of positive emotions; furthermore this profile showed the highest frequency in coping strategies focused on emotion suppression and, when compared to the Resilient prototype, a less frequent use of cognitive reappraisal. This study has innovative features in that it is the first one focusing on the features of the psychological processes that allow for distinguishing the three personality prototypes in adulthood, while previous research exclusively focused on their different adaptive outcomes. These results thus offer new insights on the peculiar patterns of psychological functioning that characterize each of the three personality prototypes. They represent a promising starting point for their application potential in research and clinical practice.

This study had the phenomenological intention to understand the experiences of internment in an adult infirmary in a general hospital. This understanding had the purpose to bring elements for a discussion about the psychological point of view of taking care of these people, from the psychologist point of view as well as of other hospital professionals who deal with them. It was opted to use a qualitative research from phenomenological type for the comprehension of the hospitalization experiences. Four adults had been participated the research, being three women and a man. They were interned in the infirmary of a hospital on the countryside of the State of S?o Paulo. The interviews had been carried through from active not-directive modality and written under narrative form. The phenomenological analysis of the narratives constitutes in the following steps: reading of each narrative searching the meaning of the hospitalization experiences; construction of a experience synthesis of hospitalization for each participant; elaboration of a comprehensive synthesis of the experience from all the narratives. One concluded that: 1) Hospitalization must be understood like a process, therefore the different participants had left the hospital unlike them arrived. 2) The occurred changes were connected to the state of humor, the feelings and the relationships of the hospitalized people. 3) The psychological condition of the participants intervened with their physical condition and was relevant for the quality of the internment experience. 4) The objective facts, as the long or brief time of internment, didn t had shown so important for the subjective quality of the internment like the meaning of their experience. 5) Some relationships established for the participants, during the internment, contained reciprocity and others do not had this element. 6) The cares, related to the hospital rules and routines had been received from different way for each participant, that is, for some this favored well-being throughout the internment and for others, it did not happen. From then on, it was possible to think about a care that watch over to the hospitalization process and the subjective quality of the internment, based on the ideas of Carl Rogers and Martin Buber, especially on the referring attitudes to this care.

This dissertation consists of two articles: a theoretical essay and an empirical study. The first article is an essay which sought to examine how the Person Centered Approach (PCA) can put it in way of understanding the implications of breast cancer for women. The study shows the need of a humane look and comprehensive care for women with breast cancer, allowing a different preventive and appropriate view to the people characteristics as once proposed in the basic premises of the Unified Health System. Essay 2 sought to examine and understand women emotional reactions in the course of breast cancer investigation and its impact on diagnosis communication. This is a qualitative study design with multiple case studies based from the PCA theoretical background. The participants were three women aged between 46 and 54 and also Basic Health Unit users from a city in the countryside of Santa Catarina. The participants’ selection was carried out by convenience. To collect the data it was used a sociodemographic data and two semi-structured interviews which were taped and verbatim transcribed. After a comprehensive description and analysis of each case, the data were organized into themes and four categories were identified: 1) From the disease investigation period to the diagnosis definition; 2) Disease perception; 3) Diagnosis communication and impact; 4) Relationship between professionals, clients and their families. The results showed that from diagnosis suspicion to confirmation, women go through a difficult period and they present several reactions such as: loss of life meaning, insecurity, distress, anxiety, helplessness, fear of death which impacts on their emotional, physical and social state. In addition, the study has found other aggravating factors to their health as lack of information, lack of support from family and healthcare team, access difficulties to treatment and delays in the system which have a harmful effect on women and also delay the disease diagnosis reducing the chances of a cure. The study highlights the importance of a person-centered approach and not only in the disease itself, focused on a humanized service with strategies that provide more positive actions in relation to care, prevention and treatment of women's health.

Background: There are clear signals that health care should provide person-centered care for the citizens. There is also a wish to increase the possibility for the patient to be involved in their care. The person-centered care can provide an opportunity for the patient to become co-creators and not only recipients of care. Purpose: The purpose of the improvement work was to increase the patient's opportunity for participation by implementing patient narrative and care plan. The purpose of the study is to make visible the employees' experience of working with the patient narrative and care plan to create patient participation. Method: The improvement work was implemented with the support of Nolan's improvement model and 5P was used to assess the unit. The ideas tested were the introduction of a patient narrative and a documented care plan. Data collection for the study was conducted with interviews of six employees and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The proportion of patients who felt that they had participated in the decisions regarding their care/treatment on the ward to the extent they wanted, increased from 77% to 95%, that can be seen as a positive effect on patient participation. The qualitative content analysis of interviews with employees was identified in three categories: the patient's care, knowledge/communication and organization/working methods where both facilitators and barriers could be seen. Conclusion: Person-centered care increases the possibility for the patient to participate in their care in an emergency surgical ward.

This study called The Rogerian Perspective to the Non-Formal Environmental Education, by means of following an experiment, aims at establishing an articulation of the person-centered approach with the non-formal Environmental Education. As a hypothesis, we can say that the Theoretical premises of the American psycologist Carl Rogers, especially in what relates to its approach centered in the person applied not only in the clinical universe but also in the field of education contribute as tolls to the Environmental Education. In this way, we are following the work carried out by the Environmental Education Unity of the city of Rio Grande, linked to the Project Small and Elderly Environmental Patrol, and more particulary to the monitor in charge of the activity Time for Tale, the environmental educator Maria Auxiliadora dos Santos Lima. The justification for this research happened while we were studying the Project and we noticed that the activity, although meritable, was operating on a traditional teaching perspective. As methodology, we used bibliographic research, audiorecorded interviews that were transcribed with the people responsible for the Project Small and Elderly Environmental Patrol, document analysys and reports produced by the Secretary, our intervention in the applied activies during 2007 and 2008. This research was based on the principal concepts of the Person Centered Approach of Carl Rogers, on the Environment and Environmental Education of Marcos Reigota and some categories of environmental education, such as otherness, knowledge building, learning menu, curriculum and sense of belonging. One of the results of this research was the making of a children literature book as a pedagogical tool to the teaching of Environmental Education.

This work aims to study, among adolescents, the psychopathological and psychological mechanisms involved in the co-occurrence of antisocial behaviors and psychoactive substance use and in the “pathologizing” of psychoactive substance use through a person-centered and a variable-centered approach and based on a multi-sample plan. This research focus on: 1) 1 025 middle and high school students aged between 12 to 16 years old, 2) 168 inpatients and outpatients adolescents aged between 12 to 18 years old, and 3) 43 psychoactive substance abusers/dependent adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years. A multi-source assessment (adolescents, parents, teachers) was used to collect information about adolescents’ antisocial behaviors, psychoactive substance use, risk-taking behaviors, past and present externalized and internalized disorders and symptoms, personality, perceived stress and coping strategies. The results show that adolescents are most likely to associate antisocial behaviors and psychoactive substances use and to have a risky psychoactive substance use when they present both relational problems (low cooperation, oppositional defiant disorder, low transcendence), emotional difficulties (depressive symptoms, internalizing disorder, intolerance to frustration, perceived stress in school and in relationships with parents, dysfunctional coping strategies) and behavioral dysregulation (high novelty seeking, ADHD/ODD comorbidity). Mechanisms involved in the pathologizing of psychoactive substance use are similar to the adoption of risky psychoactive substance use. Nevertheless, the risk of pathologizing is all the more important when emotional and relational problems are temperamental expression (low social reward dependence). In terms of prevention of risky psychoactive substance use in adolescence and of its pathologizing, it seems important to distinguish between these different levels of vulnerability (psychopathological, psychological, temperamental, adaptative)

The main objective of this paper is to determine the role of the financing autonomy of the Spanish Autonomous Communities as an appropriate way to prevent risks, especially those related to social marginalization. Moreover, this paper intends to place the financing autonomy as an effective instrument to ensure the right to security of person as interpreted by the United Nations (declaration of human rights), which encompasses the economic side of that right. This analysis is focused on the connection between financing autonomy and territorial financing system, understanding that the former represents the implementation of the latter. To determine the level of success of the current territorial financing system as an efficient instrument of risk prevention, a comprehensive analysis of the system passed in 2009 has been performed, as this was the existing system when this paper was written. As a result, weaknesses and strengths have been found in the current system, as well as a total absence of person centered perspective. These facts make necessary to present a reliable work proposal that may solve the distribution imbalance inherited from the previous systems and that includes, at last, a person-centered perspective.

Abstract: The objectives of this research were to understand and reflect on the psychological care service provided by a psychologist, who was guided by the assumptions of the Person Centered Approach, a soccer team during the periods of preparation and the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior. This theoretical framework was the humanistic psychology of Carl Ransom Rogers, the Person Centered Approach. This study applied a Football Club of São Paulo, who played one of the editions of the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior. Study participants included the players and technical team. The research is a qualitative methodology and its walk was because of the phenomenological approach. We used the technique of narrative to relate the psychological experiences of the participants. The bidder was part of the status of observer participant, since the psychologist was on the football team and also a researcher. Justifies the importance of studying the possibility that readers need to know what is experienced within a sports environment for high yield, so close and peculiar, so they can discuss in more property on the role of psychological attention in Sports. Results were presented in the reports of psychological care provided, the researcher's understanding and reflection by each of them, their perceptions and their feelings about the phenomena that arose. It was salutary to reflect the discussion results of the meeting of the Person Centered Approach and Sport require a new paradigm to look at the athlete. The person being an athlete is not finished; determined by using, or likely to label the result of psychological profiles. The best way to help the individual athlete is promoting its global development. The athlete is self-determined person, has the potential to they understand themselves, is conscious and free. His opinion should be valued in the strategic planning of the team

This thesis in pratical theology considers the spiritual dimension of socially-excluded personswho benefit from protestant associations engaged in social action. The research isbased on interviews conducted among about thirty associations in metropolitan France. Itproposes a person-centered, non-confessionnal model of spiritual care adapted to the fieldof social action, and led by a team of caregivers. This non-confessionnal support is particularlyrelevant within protestant associations, considering the vocation of the Church tostand ‘alongside’ people in their vulnerability. It departs from traditional pastoral counselingand from social assistance. The model provides ways of facilitating the emergenceof a spirituality among people in situations of social exclusion, and tackles the training ofspiritual caregivers

In order to achieve this objective, introduce yourself at first psychological counseling as a help relationship through which the counselor tries to help the advised person to find his own way and lead a good full life. Secondly, present spiritual direction as a spiritual help relationship in the light of the faith in Jesus Christ, between spiritual director and directee in which the first helps the second to observe God´s signs through his own life experiences in order to improve his relationship with himself, with others and with God himself. After presenting two help relationships, established a dialogue between both, showing their similarities, differences and implications for the practice of spiritual direction.

This research aimed to bring about essential elements present in the psychological change process that is triggered by the psychological on duty service on the clients; this modality of psychological intervention is characterized by a unique session encounter. One or two meetings afterwards are also possible. This study is based on the Person Centered Approach, developed by Carl Rogers. It took place in a psychological service offered to the staff of a General Hospital in the countryside of S?o Paulo state. It was adopted the phenomenological method with a Husserl s inspiration which is compatible with the epistemological principles of humanistic psychology. It was possible to make an analysis of the elements that were present in the researcher and clients? inter-subjective experiences. This modality of psychological intervention, so called, psychological on duty service, when it is practiced according to the person centered approach, suggests that the professional on duty adopts facilitating attitudes of unconditional positive regard, empathic comprehension and congruency or authenticity. These attitudes constitute the therapist-client relation and they are close in the meaning to the dialogic and mutuality encounter performed by Buber. Four narratives were stated by the researcher from the sessions, based on fragments of sessions from the psychological on duty service, which represent the essential elements of the experience, taken from the process. The narratives enlighted elements of psychlogical nature which suggest the actualization of the self-knowledge potential of the clients, along with the personnal autonomy. The concept of significative psychological change refers to the simbolization process with the meaning given to experiences, from the psychological helping relation. The researcher concluded that a constructive changing process was triggered in the clients in the psychological on duty service context. The elements that facilitated this simbolization process may be these: client s spontaneous search for help, motivated by his feeling of vulnerability the anguish experience promoted; the on duty service proposal that is limited to a single session which encourages the stablishment of an important affective feeling in an intersubjective nature; an authentic emotional availability in the professional, which is visible by the unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruency, that became essential for the important stablishment of a process of psychological growth, when communicated to the client and the fact of being in a mutual relation, in the buberian meaning, allowing that the adequate simbolization happens from genuine talking and listening during the process. The psychological on duty service as a psychological intervention which legitimates client?s emergential demand represents an important alternative for psychological attention in institutions due to its inclusive and innovative clinical psychological proposal.

The lifespan increases and the population grows older, thus are the numbers of dementia diseases increasing. Psychological and motor disorders caused by dementia have the collective name, Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). A person-centered care is based on an individualized approach, something that is important in the treatment of BPSD. The use of drugs in elderly people with dementia presents an increased risk of side effects such as cardiovascular changes and increased mortality. Increased knowledge of non-pharmacological interventions can help reduce unnecessary use of antipsychotic drugs for BPSD. The purpose was to compile knowledge of non-pharmacological interventions for behavioral and psychological symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). To answer the purpose, a knowledge review was conducted where data was collected via a systematic literature search in the databases, CINAHL, PubMed and PsycInfo and analyzed with content analysis. The analysis included 26 articles and all were quantitative. To the question, which non-pharmacological interventions are used in BPSD symptoms, seven categories emerged; Activity, Animal, Cognitive, Music, Guidelines, Sensory and Other. To the question, how does the intervention affect symptoms of BPSD, there were six categories; BPSD, Affective, Hyperactivity, Apathy, Psychosis, and Psychological / Psychosocial Mood. The result showed a positive effect for 97% of the 29 non-pharmacological interventions, with improvement of some BPSD symptoms. Therefore, it is important to implement non-pharmacological interventions in the care of people affected by dementia.

This research aims to apprehend the experience being lived by three psychologists at graduation level, in becoming clinical psychologists, during the last month of a one year Improvement Professional Program, held at a University Psychology Service, with a focus on a clinical psychological practice named Psychological On Duty Attention. It is a differentiated clinical approach developed at institutions as an alternative to traditional psychotherapies. The theoretical fundaments to this study insert into Humanistic Psychology, more precisely into the Person Centered Approach, developed by the North American psychologist Carl R. Rogers in the 50 s of 20 th Century. It is a qualitative research developed in a phenomenology perspective. Two meetings of dialogical nature had been carried through, with duration of approximately ninety minutes, with the three participants in group. The following phenomenological analysis of the meeting evolved, from an understanding concerning of the specificity of each meeting to a broader understanding of the meanings of the experience in focus. One concludes that the experience of practicing the role of a psychological on duty adviser constitutes a privileged field of learning for the clinical psychologist. The acquired experience made possible to the participants the get in contact with several unexpected situations, contributing to the development of a differentiated listening, of a sharpened clinical perception, besides exciting a sense of responsibility extended in relation to the patients and to the community. Considering the intervention model that characterizes the Psychological On Duty Attention, one concludes that this mode of psychological clinical attention may contribute in significant way for the clinical education of the psychologist, by propitiating the practicing of certain facilitative attitudes - empathy, positive unconditional acceptance and congruence - conceived by Rogers as necessary and sufficient for a psychological helping relationship to be efficient.

Person-centered care (PCC) has been the subject of several intervention studies, reporting positive effects on people with dementia. However, its impact on staff’s outcomes remains unclear. The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the impact of PCC approaches on stress, burnout and job satisfaction of staff caring for people with dementia in care homes. The databases PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Scopus and EBSCO and reference lists from relevant publications, were searched between December 2012 and March 2013. The review was limited to experimental and quasi-experimental studies, published in English and involving direct care workers (DCWs). Seven studies were included, addressing different PCC approaches: dementia care mapping (n=1); stimulation-oriented approaches (n=2); emotion-oriented approaches (n=2) and behavioral-oriented approaches (n=2). Five studies reported benefits on DCWs, suggesting a tendency towards the effectiveness of PCC on staff. However, methodological weaknesses and heterogeneity among studies make it difficult to draw firm conclusions.

Abstract This qualitative research aims to explore the counseling experiences of 4 counselors using Person-Centered Approach. The in-depth interview and phenomenological analysis were used to answer research questions, i.e., the rationale of their using person-centered approach as their primary intervention, their experiences of the nature of three core attitude (congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy), as well as their frustration experiences and overall relfection in applying this approach. The main findings of the research were as follows: 1.The rationale of using Person-centered approach as their primary intervention include that counselors appreciate the philosophy of this approach, their emotion-focused personality pattern fits into this approach, as well as that they have more faith in this approach as they increase their counseling experiences gradually. 2.The experiences of the nature of three core attitudes: Among them, congruence is the way the counselor is, it depends on how stable and how accepting counselors are to themselves and others; it should put client’s welfare into consideration; counselors will feel less congruent when they feel negative about clients or themselves, have conflict in values and have less counseling experiences. The unconditional positive regard which is influenced by counselors’ self-acceptance and human nature, can enhance clients’ deeper self-exploration. Counselors’ negative feeling and value conflict will interfere with this core attitude, unless they can understand the client from clients’ whole context and confront those opposing conflicts with curiosity Finally, empathy implies that counselors truly comprehend the client and express their deep understanding, it may both help client’s to explore more, and to guide counselors to following counseling direction. All the research participants leann this core attitude via continuous modification process. Counslors agreed that the concept of empathy is too abstract and on an individual basis, they need to work harder on understanding clients’ context, so as to be real empathic. 3.The frustrative experiences counselors have while using person-centered approach: Counselors feel that person-centered counseling experiences seem to be vague and hard to achieve the goal, those three core attitudes are hard to demonstrate, some specific clients seem to be uncompatable with this approach, moreover, this approach has its shortcomings due to the limit of counseling sessions. So counselors accomdodate other approaches or techniques when helping their clients. The implication of the study and further suggestions to the practitioners, researchers as well as counselor educators are addressed.

This study reviewed and contrasted scriptures of person-centered approach(PCA) with Taoism, mainly the writings of Rogers in PCA and “Tao Te Ching” of Taoism, in order to reach the following understandings. One is to elucidate the views of human nature of both thoughts, and the other is to propose a way of being a psychotherapists. For the first part, this study found that both PCA and Taoism believe in the autonomous growth of human beings, and regard it as the natural tendency of mankind. Therefore, the role of psychotherapist should be to provide “the action of the whole being” and “non-instruction,” which are non-interventional. This idea also coincidentally conforms to the spread of person-centered approach in Japan. Based on the above, this study probed into the human nature view and pathological view of Taoism and person-centered approach, and found that the hardship and suffering of human beings originate from the constraints they impose on themselves. Such constraints are what humans respond to the external values and thus lead to self-demands or self-desires. This study found that the thoughts of these two philosophies are not conflicting with each other. They both focus on the care for human beings and the idea of expressing the true self. As for the way of being a psychotherapist based on the above understanding, this study presumed that the practice of the three attitudes of PCA is actually the inspection of inner world and external attitudes of a psychotherapist per se. This study suggests that psychotherapists with self-awareness could possibly develop the attitudes, interact with clients without any obstacles and are not afraid of entering the worlds of clients. Clients could also be freely who they are in such a context. Such PCA attitudes are consistent with the idea of Taoism, which suggests that the cultivation of “true person,” “reaching emptiness and adhering to silence” and “the action of the whole being” can promote the autonomous growth of all things on earth. Suggestion of being a psychotherapist were made in this study especially for beginners and experienced practitioners in the counseling field.
