Soviet and modern Pentecostal practices of participation/non-participation in public life have been analyzed in this article. The author has formulated a question of research: does the Soviet experience influence the formation of norms and practices among conservative Pentecostals? In this article the author used field materials collected in urban and rural communities of the European Russia, the Urals, Siberia and the Republic of Kazakhstan in the 2010s. The main method of data collection is the Biographical Narrative Interview Method. These narratives were supplemented and verified by documents of government authorities from central and regional archives and ego-documents of believers (testimonies, memoirs, and letters). Soviet Pentecostals created their own internal space with specific ways of communication, regulation of community life. Soviet Pentecostals in the Evangelical community were distinguished by specific religious practices. They were characterized by social isolationism. They created their own meaning of participation/non-participation in the everyday life of secular society and Soviet practices. Pentecostals developed a strategy of passive participation in military service, had their own ideas about the possibility of obtaining higher education. They had their own view of Soviet social and cultural life. Pentecostals were subjected to social exclusion due to ideological reasons, but they were able to integrate into Soviet everyday life. In the post-Soviet period, most restrictions ceased to exist and believers were able to adapt to the current situation. At the same time, they retained restrictions based on theological and doctrinal principles. Until now, Pentecostal churches still maintain rules of conduct in everyday life, including those based on the Soviet experience.

The Pentecostal movement has since its inception been a dynamic movement in which the theology, practice, and expressions of faith have shifted. This is primarily, but not solely, due to four central factors. First, it is a movement and not a centralized organization, meaning that there is no central authority that governs how it develops, when and how new congregations or churches are formed, and how these evolve. As a movement, it is a loose collection of churches and groups, some of which do not specifically self-identify as Pentecostal, but are categorized by academics as Pentecostal due to their theology and/or practices. The article by Podolecka and Cheyeka explores this reality in Zambia where some churches consider themselves Pentecostal while other Pentecostals do not recognize these churches as part of the movement. In a different vein, Aidoo examines the phenomena of cursing prayers in which pastors criticize each other and claim other pastors as not being Christians in their prayers. Second, there is no centralized canonical theology determined by a particular body or group with authority to establish and enforce rules or regulations, meaning that the groups and churches in the movement are free to development their own theologies. The article by Resane explores this idea as he examines the impact of the Shepherding Movement within Pentecostalism and how a group of five men in the USA established a model for how churches should be run, but the movement was problematic and fell apart in the 1990s.

The study sought to investigate the reasons that led to youth conversion from mainstream to Pentecostal churches in Emmasdale and in the neighbourhood of Matero. The study was guided by Horton’s intellectualist theory of conversion in Africa. It used a case study design. The method of data collection included semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and questionnaire. Findings of the study were that, there was automatic conversion taking place among the youths in mainstream churches to Pentecostalism. This was evident in all respondents in mega Pentecostal Church who had a mainstream background. Church leaders in mainstream churches were aware of youth converting to Pentecostal churches by accepting back the youths who had converted to a Pentecostal Church but had later made up their minds to go back. The study further revealed that non-Pentecostal parents supported and encouraged their children who converted to a mega Pentecostal Church owing to incentives such as; scholarships, employment and supportive programmes provided to their children. The study recommends that: sermon presentation should be revised in some mainstream churches. Explaining scriptures should not be exegetical only but linking scriptures to real life struggles of the youth. The church leaders in mainstream churches must formulate programmes that are more practical and youth oriented like charismatic prayer service, provision of scholarship, employment and positions of responsibilities through different ministries within the mainstream churches. Non-Pentecostal parents should not be too sceptical about children who associate themselves with Pentecostalism but encourage them to genuinely convert to this brand of Christianity.

Como nos séculos passados, os povos indígenas continuam resistindo para sobreviver em meio a uma sociedade preconceituosa que nega o direito de ser diferente. O presente trabalho versa sobre os indígenas Tabajara da Paraíba, expropriados do seu território, no litoral sul paraibano. Nos tempos hodiernos vivem num processo de etnogênese, reivindicando seus direitos e reelaborando suas tradições. A problemática do estudo se refere aos Tabajara fiéis à doutrina Protestante, que convivem com uma nova realidade: a de exteriorizar seus sinais diacríticos ou sua religiosidade Pentecostal. O estudo está fundamentado nos autores: Barcellos e Farias (2012; 2014), Mendonça (1989), Wright (2004), dentre outros. Utilizou-se da metodologia qualitativa para adentrar no universo de significados, crenças e valores desses indígenas. Foi usado na coleta de dados a observação participante e entrevistas abertas. O resultado da pesquisa revela as transformações ocorridas na vida desses indígenas, convertidos às denominações religiosas pentecostais após a diáspora ocorrida no século XIX. As in past centuries, indigenous peoples continue to resist to survive amid a prejudiced society that denies the right to be different. This paper deals with the ParaíbaTabajara Indians, dispossessed of their territory in the south coast of Paraiba. In modern times they live in ethnogenesis process, claiming their rights and reworking their traditions. The study of the problem relates to Tabajara faithful to Protestant doctrine, living with a new reality: to externalize their diacritics or his Pentecostal religion. The study is based on the authors: Barcellos and Farias (2012; 2014), Mendonça (1989), Wright (2004), among others. We used qualitative methods to enter the universe of meanings, beliefs and values ​​of these indigenous. It was used in data collection participant observation and open interviews. The search result shows the changes occurring in the lives of indigenous people converted to Pentecostal denominations after the diaspora occurred in the nineteenth century.

The rate at which Christians in southeast Nigeria migrate from one Christian denomination to another calls for scholarly investigation; this migration is noticeable from the main-line churches to the Pentecostal groups. This study was conceived to interrogate this proselytizing venture with the view to finding the causative factors behind the inter-church movement. The study employed qualitative research methods on primary and secondary sources of data collection. Findings show that the prosperity message of the Pentecostal movement is a major player in proselytism. The continuing rise of Pentecostal groups in southeast Nigeria and the unbridled desire of some Christians for health and material prosperity give rise to the inter-church movement. The study further discovered that some Pentecostal pastors take advantage of the economic hardships in southeast Nigeria, particularly since the Nigeria-Biafra war, to manipulate the people into believing that religion, especially Pentecostalism, has solutions to all human health and economic challenges. Worried that the practice is aggressively attacking the cherished Christian kerygmatic understanding of the Church, the study recommends some practical steps that could be undertaken to save Christians from this seeming “holy deceit” as well as to rescue the image of the universal Church from being associated with religious commercialization.

This study aims to examine the tendency of bi-vocational pastors' implementation based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Jakarta Pentecostal Church; examine what dimensions are most dominant in bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Jakarta Pentecostal Church; and discover what backgrounds are most dominant in dual-profession pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Jakarta Pentecostal Church. The research methodology used is quantitative method with data collection through a survey of 126 ministers of the Pentecostal Church of God in the Jakarta area. The approach used is the explanatory-confirmatory approach, which explains the relationship between the variables studied and tests them, then examines and identifies several variables to confirm existing findings through hypothesis testing. There are three hypotheses proposed in this study, namely: First, it is suspected that the tendency of the imlementation of bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Jakarta Pentecostal Church is in the moderate category. Second, it is suspected that the dominant dimension of bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Jakarta Regional Pentecostal Church is love. Third, it is suspected that the dominant background of bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among Pentecostal Church of God ministers in the Jakarta area is the last education. From the results of the research analysis through statistical tests using the SPSS application, it was found that the tendency of the implementation of bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Pentecostal Church in the Jakarta area is moderate, thus the first hypothesis is proven; the dominant dimension in the implementation of bi-vocational pastors is devotion to the master, thus the second hypothesis is not proven; and the dominant background in the implementation of exemplary ministers is the length of service, thus the third hypothesis is not proven. Based on the research findings, the implications of this study are: the tendency of the implementation of Bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 among the ministers of the Jakarta Pentecostal Church can still increase through programmes and the length of time pastors and ministers serve. Because the dominant background in the implementation of bi-vocational pastors based on Matthew 6:24 is the length of time pastors and ministers have served.

AbstractThe emergence of Pentecostal scholarship in the last quarter century set the stage for fresh and ongoing dialogue concerning the relationship between Pauline and Lukan pneumatologies in the broader scholarly community. The collection of articles, theses, dissertations, and monographs attempting to chart and settle this relationship increases annually. To this collection, Asian scholar Youngmo Cho submits a valuable addition. In his 'Spirit and Kingdom in the Writings of Luke and Paul', Cho, as suggested by the subtitle, proposes 'An Attempt to Reconcile these Concepts.' Originally written as his PhD thesis at the University of Aberdeen under Andrew Clarke, this revised thesis is sure to contribute to the continuing discussion not only in Pentecostal circles but in the broader academic world. A detailed theologian Cho utilizes strong exegetical, lexicographical, and hermeneutical instincts to explore the unique early Christian contribution of Paul's innovative pneumatology against Luke's traditional intertestamental pneumatology. In this review essay I offer a thorough synopsis of Cho's work followed by a brief evaluation.

Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between community building and spiritual growth within Pentecostal Churches in the Nairobi metropolitan counties of Kenya, focusing on the Pentecostal Evangelical Fellowship of Africa (PEFA), Kenya Assemblies of God (KAG), and Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK) under the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). Grounded in servant leadership, empowerment, and spiritual leadership theories, the research combines quantitative and qualitative methods to explore how servant leaders facilitate community building and its impact on church growth. Methodology: The study was guided by servant leadership, empowerment and spiritual leadership theories. The study was conducted across multiple Pentecostal denominations within the Nairobi Metropolitan counties, including Nairobi, Kajiado, Muranga, Kiambu, and Machakos in Kenya. Data collection involved 333 church leaders and members, with 173 from PEFA, 80 from KAG, and 80 from FGCK, resulting in a response rate of 91%. Additionally, two discussion groups comprising pastors and elders from PEFA and KAG churches in Kajiado County were interviewed using an interview guide, totaling 17 members. The total response rate of church leaders and members was 304 (91%). The descriptive cross-sectional survey research design and exploratory designs were adopted for data collection and analysis where respondents provided relevant data. The research was anchored on the pragmatism philosophy. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis, where Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29 was used. Thematic analysis was employed in analyzing qualitative type of data. Purposive and stratified random sampling techniques were employed to select the sample, ensuring representation of subgroups within the population. This approach facilitated efficient and cost-effective data collection while maintaining the integrity of the study's findings Findings: Data collected from 304 respondents, including pastors, elders, and members, reveals a significant positive association between community building and spiritual growth, with volunteer services rating relatively low. The results showed a positive significance of community building in affecting church spiritual growth. The study findings in all the three models: Model summary, ANOVA and Coefficient confirm the significance of community building in church spiritual growth. The correlation coefficient results yielded a positive relationship of 0.580. However, descriptive statistics on mean scores of how respondents views the practice of community building in their churches, the sub variable of voluntary community services was ranked the lowest (3.7) amongst the other constructs. Nevertheless, there is a need for enhancement of voluntary services by the Pentecostal churches in areas such as health, free cleaning and training services to give back to the community. When church leadership participate in welfare activities such as helping the vulnerable in society, this positively affects church growth both spiritually and numerically. The findings emphasize the importance of enhancing volunteer engagement to foster both spiritual and numerical church growth. This study contributes to theoretical understanding and practical implications for Pentecostal church settings, addressing research gaps and advocating for servant leadership practices that empower church members and promote community building for holistic church growth.Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: The study supported servant leadership, empowerment and spiritual leadership theories. Servant leaders play a crucial role in empowering of church members through community building causing effect on church growth. The study revealed and filled a number of conceptual, theoretical, contextual and empirical glaring research gaps in area of servant leadership attribute of community building and church spiritual growth. The most noticeable gap is the contextual gap where many studies on church growth only delved on numerical growth and leaving out spiritual growth of which this study addressed. The study also revealed a gap in volunteer services with a mean of 4.1. Pentecostal churches therefore need to put more efforts to improve volunteer services as well as promotion of spiritual formation so as to enhance church spiritual growth.

Abstract This study aims to determine the congregation's understanding of Pentaskota worship values ​​and their impact on encouraging spiritual maturity. The research’s method in this paper is a qualitative research method. This qualitative research consists of library research and grounded research, namely by taking theories based on literature and conducting interviews with fifteen resource persons consisting of five Pentecostal churches in Bogor City. In this research, there are several steps which are carried out, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions. The research data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, namely by explaining the results of the analysis obtained from interviews with informants. The results of this study indicate that understanding the Pentecostal liturgical elements does not have an impact on spiritual maturity. However, performing the Pentecostal liturgy will have an impact on spiritual maturity. Through a good understanding and understanding of the elements contained in the Pentecostal Liturgy, the congregation will be more sincere in carrying out the liturgical worship. Having a right understanding and doing liturgy can seriously improve spirituality and have a beneficial impact on spiritual growth and maturity. Therefore, there is an indirect correlation between the elements of Pentecostal worship and the spiritual maturity of Christians. Keywords: liturgy; elements of pentecostal worship; spiritual maturity Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemahaman jemaat terhadap nilai-nilai ibadah Pentaskota dan dampaknya untuk mendorong kedewasaan rohani. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian kualitatif ini terdiri dari library research dan grounded research, yaitu dengan mengambil teori berdasarkan literatur dan melakukan wawancara terhadap lima belas orang narasumber yang terdiri dari lima gereja aliran Pentakosta.di Kota Bogor. Dalam penelitian ini terdapat beberapa tahap yang dilakukan yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, penarikan kesimpulan. Data hasil penelitian dianalisa dengan menggunakan analisa deskriptif, yaitu dengan menjelaskan hasil analisa yang didapatkan dari hasil wawancara terhadap narasumber. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman terhadap unsur-unsur liturgi Pentakosta tidak memberikan dampak bagi kedewasaan rohani. Namun demikian, melakukan liturgi Pentakosta akan memberikan dampak bagi kedewasaan rohani. Melalui pengertian dan pemahaman yang baik terhadap unsur-unsur yang terdapat dalam liturgi Pentakosta, maka jemaat akan lebih sungguh-sungguh dalam melaksanakan liturgi ibadah. Dengan memiliki pengertian yang benar dan melakukan liturgi dengan sungguh-sungguh dapat meningkatkan spiritualitas dan memberikan dampak yang berguna bagi pertumbuhan dan kedewasaan rohani. Karena itu, terdapat korelasi tidak langsung antara unsur-unsur ibadah Pentakosta dengan kedewasaan rohani orang Kristen. Kata Kunci: liturgi; unsur-unsur ibadah pentakosta; kedewasaan rohani

Abstract Gresik Town Square, or Alun-alun Gresik, was originally an open space that was used by local residents for various activities. However, in 2017, the Gresik Town Square was converted into an Islamic Center, which caused pros and cons in the society. This refusal is based on the position of the Gresik Town Square as a cultural heritage and the conditions around the Square are not only based on Islamic culture. This is marked by the existence of the Pentecostal Church and Kim Hin Kiong Temple near the Alun-Alun. This phenomenon generates a “placelessness”, which describes the ignorance of special feature of places in the creation of the new landscapes. The existence of Alun-Alun Gresik, which is an Islamic Center, can slowly replace the special meaning of places, such as the Pentecostal Church and Kim Hin Kiong Temple which are also highly related to the cultural traditions. Based on this problem, the multicultural condition of the Old City of Gresik is the basis for restoring Gresik Town Square by respecting other cultures. Using participatory design approach, this project is trying to involve participants’ contributions in seeing this issue and giving aspirations on the design of multicultural Gresik Town Square. The research employs field observation, interview, survey, and literature review for data collection. The results showed that two groups (accepting and rejecting the design) are likely to have multicultural image of the town square, supported by activities and facilities that accommodate each communities’ culture.

Purpose: This study entailed assessing moderating effect of empowerment on servant leadership and church spiritual growth. The general objective of the study was to establish how empowerment moderates the relationship between servant leadership and church spiritual growth in Pentecostal Churches in Kenya within the Nairobi metropolitan counties. The study delved on Pentecostal Evangelical Fellowship of Africa (PEFA); Kenya Assemblies of God (KAG), and Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK), all under the umbrella of National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). The study was guided by servant leadership, empowerment and spiritual leadership theories which all indicate that servant leaders play a crucial role in empowerment of church members and consequently causing effect on church growth. Materials and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used for the study and pragmatism was employed as a philosophical framework for the research. The study employed a mixed method approach with both quantitative and qualitative research methods in use and data collection undertaken through, questionnaires and interview guides. The target population constituted 2000 church pastors, elders as well as members from which a sample of 333 was obtained through purposive and stratified random sampling techniques in selected Pentecostal churches within Nairobi, Machakos, Muranga, Kiambu and Kajiado counties. The total response rate was 304 (91%). Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis, where Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29 was used. On qualitative data, thematic analysis was carried out on two focus discussions groups to determine views of participants. Findings: Church members’ empowerment has no significant moderating effect in the relationship between servant leadership and church spiritual growth of Pentecostal Churches within Nairobi metropolitan counties of Kenya. The linearity test results for the relationship between spiritual growth and empowerment suggest a significant linear association, as indicated by the low p-values (all p-values are less than 0.05). The high F-value (197.904) and low p-value (0.000) suggest a highly significant linear relationship between Spiritual Growth and Empowerment. The Pearson's correlation coefficient (R) of 0.609 signifies a moderately strong positive relationship between spiritual growth and empowerment, indicating that as one variable increases, the other tends to increase as well. There is therefore a significant moderating effect of empowerment on servant leadership and church spiritual growth. On the research question that stated: “To what extent does Church members’ empowerment moderate the relationship between servant leadership and church spiritual growth of Pentecostal Churches within Nairobi metropolitan counties in Kenya?” Majority of participants agreed that church members’ empowerment moderated relationship between servant leadership and church spiritual growth pointing that training, involvement and sharing of responsibilities with church members by their leaders positively affected church growth both spiritually and numerically. Implications to theory, practice and Policy: The study supported servant leadership, empowerment and spiritual leadership theories. In addition, the study bridged a number of research gaps in area of servant leadership, empowerment and church spiritual growth indicated in the statement of the problem. The most noticeable gap is the contextual gap where many studies on church growth only delved on numerical growth and leaving out spiritual growth of which this study addressed. The study recommended that the church should put more emphasis on active participation of church members in decision making processes especially on provision of suggestion boxes within the church premises for this triggers church spiritual growth. The church was recommended to adopt servant leadership style and endeavor to empower the membership so as to realize church spiritual growth.

Scholarly study of Christian independency in southern Africa began with the publication of Bengt Sundkler's Bantu Prophets in 1948. A rich literature subsequently followed, much of it deploying his now classic typology of Ethiopian and Zionist Churches. Nevertheless, the historical study of independency has been limited. As one scholar has recently observed, historians have tended to focus on the Ethiopian-type churches, leaving the study of the Zionist-type to anthropologists and missiologists. The neglect of Zionist-type churches by historians meant that early studies on this form of Christianity were historically weak. Missiologists distorted the whole area of inquiry with theological concerns, at first raising the spectre of syncretistic heresy, and more recently making claims about indigenous authenticity. Anthropologists initially viewed independent churches as fascinating examples of cultural resilience. The movements were seen as sources of community, loyalty and security in the face of the atomising and anomic experience of urbanization; or as foci for ‘the process of modification and adaptation’ taking place throughout rural society. But anthropologists rarely paid attention to independency's origins. Where historians did engage with Zionist-type independency, they did so through the spectacles of nationalist historiography in order to demonstrate independency's supposed proto-nationalist character.By adopting an international and regional perspective, this article provides an account of the historical origins and early evolution of these churches. Where scholars in the past have tended to disaggregate the movement, essentializing its later racial and geographical boundaries, this paper will draw the early history of the movement together, illuminating its common origin and global character. The basic ingredients of this account have been available in the work of Walter Hollenweger, Jean Comaroff, Sundkler's later book, and more recently, studies by Jim Kiernan and David Chidester. Nevertheless, the historical implication that so-called African independent churches emerged out of the global pentecostal movement continues to be ignored.The purpose of demonstrating the origins of southern African pentecostalism is not to make the now commonplace historical and anthropological critique of authenticity, although those pursuing a theological agenda which distinguishes African Independent Churches as a separate category of Christianity would do well to pay heed to that critique. Neither is it assumed that analysis of origins explains the meaning and appeal of different southern African pentecostal movements and denominations. Rather, this paper demonstrates that pentecostalism is a global phenomenon: a collection of vital and powerful idioms about illness and healing, evil and purity which make striking resonances with peoples sharing common historical experiences of marginalization from established religion and from the values of twentieth-century industrial capitalism. At the same time pentecostalism has also exhibited a remarkable capacity to localize itself, taking on very distinct meanings in different local contexts. At the heart of this paper lies a comparative analysis of the radically different responses which the movement engendered from the South African and Southern Rhodesian states.

Since the reappearance of the gifts of the Spirit, especially the use of the language of the Spirit in the middle of the church at the beginning of the 20th century, it has reaped the pros and cons among the church circles. This raises quite a serious problem especially for the Pentecostal and Charismatic congregations because they are considered heretical when they maintain the belief that speaking in tongues is a gift from God.This paper examines whether the use of tongues is currently biblical? This paper also examines the relationship of speaking in tongues with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This paper is made using descriptive qualitative research methods. The data collection technique that I use is through literature study. To get conclusions in general, intact and thorough from the research that has been done, the writer will use inductive methods.

This research talks about the principle of giving in theological studies based on the book of 1 Kings 17:7-24. Giving offerings to God is a sign of gratitude for all the blessings that God has given. Likewise, giving to fellow humans is a form of social concern and generosity that believers have. Don't give because you have more, but because you have compassion so you want to share with others. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of interviews, observation and examination of documents to the extent that could be obtained during the research. The purpose of this research is to explain to members of the East Nabire Classis Pentecostal Church in Papua (GPDP) congregation. As a result of this research, it was found based on 1 Kings 17:7-24 that the principles of giving are as follows; Giving to share, Motivation in giving, Giving from lack, Giving sincerely and honestly, Having generosity, Giving with faith. The conclusion of the research is that giving is evidence of obedience and belief in God's word.

The emergence and widespread of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement (CCRM) is clad with opportunities and challenges, attracting admirers and facing resistance from parish priests accusing them of defiance, divisions, confusion, and suspicion among the faithful. This article is an extraction of Mutua’s thesis (2023). The article sought to survey the historical development and characteristics of the CCRM in the Catholic Diocese of Meru (CDM).The study employed the Rational Choice Theory. This theory argues that religion and its systems compensate humans while human beings themselves are viewed as actors who act rationally as they make their best choices they calculate costs and gained benefits. A descriptive survey design was used whereby opinions of the CCRM members across the CDM were sought on its origins. A sample size was 352. Comprising of CCRM members and leaders. Priest and a bishop were used in data collection. The findings revealed that CCRM started in the CDM in 1996 and since then it has continued to spread and grow. Further, the findings indicated that despite facing initial resistance. The hierarchy of the Church across the CDM has embraced the movement in a bid to counter pressure and break away to other Charismatic/Pentecostal churches.

The characteristics of effective pastoral service, as outlined in 1 Peter 5:1-4, entail that pastors are expected to serve as role models for the congregation. Peter expresses hope that these shepherds will be good leaders for the existing flock. Rather than following behind their sheep, pastors are to lead them. The objective of this research is to enable congregation leaders at the Pentecostal Church in Indonesia Zion Altar Malang (hereafter referred to as GPdI Zion Altar Malang) to implement the service characteristics of pastoral care according to 1 Peter 5:1-4. This is prompted by the suboptimal nature of the service characteristics of pastors in their oversight of local churches. The research, conducted using qualitative methods, involved data collection from several participants, including pastors and supporting servants involved in pastoral care at GPdI Zion Altar Malang. The findings of the research revealed issues such as poorly organized financial management, suboptimal implementation of teaching programs, and exacerbated by the absence of counselling services for congregation members grappling with issues in their faith journey. Pastors acknowledge the necessity of enhancing competency to realize the characteristics of pastoral care in accordance with God’s Word, particularly as outlined in 1 Peter 5:1-4, for the spiritual growth of congregation members.

This research is about the role of elders in the Pentecostal Church in Indonesia (GPdI) of the Gethsemane church in Kuta, which has been initiated since May 18, 1979, by Ms. Nani Soetarni, and has experienced growth both in quality and quantity. As the church grows, the church leader or pastor appoints elders to help with the stewardship. The purpose of this study was to find out how the church's perspective on the stewardship task carried out by the elders at Gethsemane Gethsemane Kuta, Bali. The method used is a qualitative method, in which the participants are the GPdI Gethsemane Kuta congregation with a total of 44 people. Data collection techniques by distributing and collecting question questionnaires, where the results are, not all elders carry out their duties to the maximum. This is due to the lack of understanding of the elders about the duties and responsibilities related to the growth of the church, ineffective communication among the elders.AbstrakPenelitian ini tentang peran penatua di Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia (GPdI) jemaat Getsemani Kuta, yang telah dirintis sejak tangal 18 Mei 1979, oleh ibu Nani Soetarni, serta telah mengalami pertumbuhan baik secara kualitas maupun kuantitas. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan mengedarkan dan mengumpulkan angket pertanyaan, di mana hasilnya adalah, belum semua penatua melaksanakan tugas pelayanannya dengan maksimal. Hal tersebut disebabkan karena kurangnya pemahaman para penatua tentang tugas dan tanggung jawabnya yang berhubungan terhadap pertumbuhan gereja, komunikasi yang tidak efektif di antara para penatua.

Background: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) remain a major public health problem in subsaharan African countries, particularly Botswana. In Gaborone, STIs increased from 24 272 in 2015 to 28 106 in 2016 (16%), despite intense advocacy for behavior change by stakeholders to reduce HIV and AIDS prevalence. This study aimed to establish therisk factors associated with STIs. Materials and Methods: A case-control design was used to study 90 cases and 153 controls (Mean age=28; SD= ± 6.48; age range= 18 – 60 years) enrolled from two health facilities. Data were collected through interviewer-administered questionnaires and participants were selected using simple random sampling. Data were captured and analyzed using SPSS statistical software (version 25). Results: Traveling long distances to access condoms from clinics or pharmacies was a risk factor for contracting STIs among males [Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 3.46; 95% CI 1.37-8.73]. Negative attitudes, for instance, reduction of quality of sex (pleasure) caused by condom use, was found to be a risk factor among females (AOR= 4.15; 95% CI 1.71-10.08). Additionally, belonging to a particular religion, that is, Pentecostal, was a deterrent to contracting STIs for both genders (AOR=0.27; 95% CI 0.11-0.68). Conclusions: Knowledge of the deleterious effects of STIs was not sufficient to curb contracting any of the infections. Barriers to easy access of condoms such as traveling long distances and negative attitudes towards condom use are obstacles to maintaining healthy behaviors. Stakeholders should increase condom collection points and changenegative attitudes through the use of cost-benefit analysis in the AIDS era.

Music has always been an indispensable tool in any church setting. In Nigeria, the early missionaries appropriated music in liturgical services in form of hymn singing, chant and anthem as part of worship in the church. With continual apt growth of Christianity in Nigeria, Assemblies of God church evolved from the Pentecostal movement, with emphasis on the activity of the Holy Spirit and on holy living. Hence, contents and styles of music were made to suit the pattern and beliefs of Assemblies of God such as spirit motivated songs, evangelistic songs, mission songs and salvation songs other than the conventional hymns singing and anthems. This paper therefore attempts to highlight the distinctive traits of Assemblies of God, Uyo District, and its reflection on the music ministration. Also, it showcases the basics for music ministers (choristers and music directors) to include: musical background, spiritual life, social and leadership skills as fundamental principles, beliefs and moral conduct patterned by the beliefs of the church for quality service to God and humanity. Qualitative design and typical forms of data drawn from interviews, participant observations and relevant documents were applied in the study for data collection. The significance of this paper is to provide justifiable guidelines to every music minister to attain the required moral and music standard widely accepted and appreciated by God and man. With the findings, it recommends periodical re-orientation towards musical knowledge and spiritual relevance as regard to what Assemblies of God believe for effective music ministration

This study investigated the contribution of Entrepreneurship Education (EE) by church services to the economic wellbeing of Christians in Iringa Municipality. This study used a case study design as the framework for data collection and analysis, where Semi-structured questionnaire and Key Informant Interviews were used to collect information from the involved Christians who engaged in entrepreneurial activities and accessed entrepreneurship education in a list of four churches including respondents from ELCT-DIRA (60), Catholic Church (10), Seventh Day Adventist Church (10) and Pentecostal Churches (10), the study selected three respondents. Apart from the Christian entrepreneurs, the study involved four (4) church leaders; one from each church and three (3) respondents where officials from the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA). Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and Iringa Municipality. The study employed a mixed method research approach whereby both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The statistical and thematic analysis was used to analyse quantitative and qualitative information collected from the respondents. From the study findings, it is concluded that Christians’ entrepreneurship projects contribute to their economic growth. It is vividly true that entrepreneurship contributes positively to economic growth, hence it is highly recommended that churches should put emphasis on spiritual growth as well as economic growth and the recommendation is Christian entrepreneurs should think of some ways to integrate their church services with entrepreneurship education, provide a supportive environment, useful network for entrepreneurship and to offer access to resources and opportunities such as financial assistance, training programs, market information, suppliers, customers, and partners.

The 2012 elections for governor in Rio de Janeiro gather special attention from national and international media analysts. The city politics was under scrutiny with the mega events hosted Brazil, like the Summer Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cup. In this sense, the strategies of the candidates for the organization of the city - mainly for public safety issues - were dissected and analysed for months leading up to the election day.In this context, as the disputes were being centralized in the candidates best placed in the pools, Luis Carlos Pezão (PMDB) and Marcelo Crivela (PRB), talks about the supposed contenders’ governance mechanisms began to be galvanized. In the mainstream narrative, the first one would gather support, along other segments, from the “milícias”, parastatal organizations that uses extortion of some communities to gather control of entire neighbourhoods. The ‘milícias’ would be one of the greatest contemporary security issues of Rio, accused of violent actions and recurrent cases of murders and violence. In turn, Crivela would be mainly supported by the neo-Pentecostal religious groups (The Guardian, 2012; O Globo, 2012). This binary narrative, reinforced by accusations from both politicians in televised debates, strengthened the discourse of an ‘ militia assault’ against the State, building the image that evangelical sectors could serve as an opposition movement to these groups. Both would operate on a complete and antagonic mechanism of governance and social organization.The objective of this paper is to critically deconstruct these two premises. First, through a genealogical analysis of milícias groups in Rio de Janeiro, we will establish a reflection that these agents never behaved as "parallel states", as often described. Far from "invading the State,"such actors establish enmeshment processes with government sectors, redefining practices and legitimacy in a complex system - involving elections and political support. We support this discourse with the concept of "parastatal" (Amar, 2014) to better represent these agents, believing that these considerations sophisticates the analysis, moving away from the narrative that the State, an isolated and sealed actor, would - and could - be attacked by external agents.The second objective is to demonstrate that the relationship between neo-Pentecostal communities and milicia groups in Rio de Janeiro is also more complex than the speech presented at the elections. Through qualitative analysis of polling data in areas controlled by the armed groups - but with strong evangelical presence – we seek to relativize the discussions that these two actors would intrinsically and automatically possess antagonistic models of social organization. The data collection rearticulates these relationships and propose a different mechanism of explanation – dissimilar from the "zero sum game" between these two elements.This specific deconstruction of the binary narratives galvanize the complexification of the milicias and the evangelical groups, demonstrating that a less absolute interpretation sheds light to a new framework of practices. We believe that these arguments promotes a potent reflection on the processes of power and legitimacy of violence in Rio de Janeiro, reinforcing how these actors can function on multiple and overlapping movements.

The postmodern era is closely related to pluralism and relativism. All are subject to this principle, including human salvation. Jesus, the only way of salvation, is not accepted absolutely, let alone the Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus principle (outside the church there is no salvation) which was coined by the church father Cyprian. This principle is considered too exclusive because it does not provide room for people outside the church to get salvation. In addition, this teaching was also declared null and void by the times. Is this true? That is why it is important to extract this Cyprian understanding that can be used as guidance for the Pente-costal church. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through library research. The data is then extracted and linked to the actions that have been carried out by the Pentecostal church or synod so far. The results of the study indicate that there is a close relationship between ecclesiology and Christology and soteriology. This principle also supports the authority and duty of the church in conveying salvation to men and maintaining pure teaching.AbstrakEra postmodern erat kaitannya dengan pluralisme dan relativisme. Semua dike-nakan prinsip ini, termasuk keselamatan manusia. Yesus satu-satunya jalan keselamatan saja tidak diterima secara absolute apalagi prinsip Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus (di luar gereja tidak ada keselamatan) yang dicetuskan oleh bapa gereja Cyprianus. Prinsip ini dianggap ter-lalu ekslusif karena tidak memberikan ruang bagi orang diluar gereja mendapatkan kese-lamatan. Selain itu ajaran ini juga dinyatakan batal oleh perkembangan zaman. Apakah benar demikian? Itu sebabnya, penting untuk mengekstraksi pemahaman Cyprianus ini yang dapat menjadi pegangan bagi gereja Pentakosta. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui studi keperpustakaan. Data selanjutnya diekstraksi dan dikaitkan dengan tindakan yang telah dilakukan oleh gereja atau sinode Pentakosta selama ini. Hasil penelitian menyatakan bahwa ada hubungan erat antara eklesiologi dengan kristologi dan soteriologi. The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) is the oldest church in Kenya and the largest protestant denomination in the country. Since religions were liberalized after the attainment of political independence in AD 1964, the church has experienced declining congregations due to the registration of new denominations, especially the Pentecostal ones. The decline has been noticeable from the beginning of the 21st Century but there are no reports of strategies to resolve the phenomenon. Since congregation members are the customers for a church, the declining phenomenon indicates a marketing problem that requires a marketing strategy. This research investigated how the ACK is operationalizing a marketing strategy and its influence on its sustainability. The ACK operates on standardized structures and a diocese is the highest independent unit. This research was conducted in the diocese of Kirinyaga as the unit of analysis with Wanguru Archdeaconry as the unit of observation. The independent variables were the elements of the marketing mix, namely Product, Promotion, Position and Price strategies while the dependent variable was the church sustainability. Data collection involved 308 participants drawn from the 19 parishes in the Wanguru archdeaconry and included the church leadership and the congregation members. The research instruments were a semi-structured questionnaire and interviews. For the Product variable, the research applied the Maslow Hierarchy of needs theory while for the promotion variable, it was the AIDA Model (Attention, Interest, Desire and Action). For the positioning strategy, the Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning (STP) Model was applied while the Value-Based Pricing theory was used for the price strategy. For church sustainability, the research applied the Triple Bottom Line model. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results indicated that the ACK has not operationalized an effective marketing strategy for while the Gospel as the marketing product of the church was highly rated, there were low scores for Promotion, Position and Price strategies.

This paper describes fieldwork attempts to understand perceptions of the spirit world in one Liberian Pentecostal ministry, and the limitations in fully understanding and collecting data for such an ambiguous topic, when relying only on interviews and observations. Using only these methods, I was faced with a number of seeming contradictions between teachings and practices. By remaining flexible in my fieldwork methods, I found that taking advantage of my “otherness” – my status as a non born-again Christian – rather than being an obstacle to gaining access, was actually very useful, especially when I was surprisingly invited to be the subject of one of the ministry’s deliverance rituals. The reasons that I was allowed to take part in the performance and the performance itself gave me valuable data that could not have been acquired through any of my own questions or observations.

Augustine’s ‘corpus’ of Pentecost sermones (29, 29A-B, 266-272B, 378) serves in this contribution as a case study to see whether he touches on the topic of grace within these specifically pastoral and liturgical sermones, and to what extent his homiletic treatment is different from his (anti-Pelagian) treatises on grace. The Spirit, liturgically celebrated at Pentecost, plays a central role in Augustine’s doctrine of grace. Furthermore, a possible link with the Donatist controversy will be examined. Augustine stresses ecclesial unity in the collection of Pentecost sermons, which is given by the Holy Spirit. The topic of unity in the Church is a central feature in is anti-Donatist polemics.

Following the liturgical year from Trinity Sunday to the feast of Saint Catherine on November 25th, these fifty-eight poems celebrate the solemnities, feasts, and memorials of the Roman liturgical calendar throughout the approximately twenty-six weeks comprising the major portion of ‘ordinary time’. Presumably, this collection would have had a companion volume, now lost, covering the period from Advent to Pentecost which includes the principal solemnities and great seasons of the liturgical year.

A salinização dos solos e um problema que ocorre quando existe um excesso de sais na solução do solo, afetando a pecuária e a agricultura, causando prejuízos econômicos e ambientais. O trabalho objetivou avaliar comunidades vegetais presentes em áreas salinizadas do perímetro irrigado Curu-Recuperação, em Pentecoste-CE. Foram realizadas cinco coletas em duas áreas do perímetro, em três épocas do ano (início da quadra chuvosa, final da quadra chuvosa e estação seca) constituídas de contagem de plantas e coletas de solo. Registrou-se a presença de 37 espécies divididas em 14 famílias, sendo Fabaceae a mais representativa. As espécies Blutaparon vermiculare L., Cyperus rotundus L. e Malachra fasciata Jacq., foram as mais representativas, sendo a primeira espécie com a maior uniformidade na distribuição dentre todas as coletas. O índice de Shannon obtido foi semelhante ao encontrado em áreas sob o efeito do estresse salino. Deste modo, foi possível identificar espécies tolerantes a salinidade no solo e com aplicações alimentícias, medicinais, para uso em programas de haloforraginocultura e na recuperação de solos degradados.Palavras-chave: Halófita, salinidade, semiárido. Herbaceous-shrub Halophytic Community of the Irrigated Perimeter of the County Pentecoste–CE A B S T R A C TSalinization of soils is a problem that occurs when there is an excess of salts in the soil solution, affecting livestock and agriculture, causing economic and environmental damages. The objective of this work was to evaluate plant communities present in salinized areas of the irrigated perimeter Curu-Recuperação, in Pentecoste-CE. Five collections were carried out in two perimeter areas, in three seasons of the year (beginning of the rainy season, end of the rainy season and dry season), consisting of plant counts and soil collections. The presence of 37 species divided into 14 families was recorded, with Fabaceae being the most representative. The species Blutaparon vermiculare L., Cyperus rotundus L. and Malachra fasciata Jacq., were the most representative, being the first species with the greatest uniformity in the distribution in all collections. The Shannon index obtained was similar to that found in areas under the effect of saline stress. Therefore, it was possible to identify species tolerant to salinity in the soil and with food and medicinal applications, for use in haloforraginculture programs and in the recovery of degraded soils.Keywords: Halophytes, salinity, semiarid.

Pathological abnormalities observed in cells or tissues obtained from the uterine cervix of women are collectively referred to as cervical lesions. The condition is gradually becoming a menace as it can affect different category of women. It is more worrisome as religious women particularly are not spared from the deadly scourge. This study was to investigate cervical lesion and human papillomavirus in relatively healthy religious women attending Pentecostal churches in Benin City, Nigeria. A cross-sectional investigation of the participants using structured questionnaire and the liquid-based cytology from January to July 2017 was used as the data and sample collecting tools. Majority of religious women that participated in the survey (n=429) cut across 47 Pentecostal churches. The mean age of the respondents was 48.46years (±2SD) with the highest number of participants being age group (36-45years) 131/429(31%), and ≥66years 13/429(3%). HPV infection was 9/429(2.1%), and the worst hit was among age group (26-35years) 5/429(1.2%) followed by 3/429(0.7%) amongst age group 36-45years, and 1/429 (0.2%) from age group 46-55years. 51/429(11.89%) was cervical lesion positive, while cytopathology revealed inflammatory smears (acute and chronic cervicitis), atypical glandular cells (AGC), low-grade squamous cell intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), and atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS). Cervical lesion and subsequent HPV infections are prevalent within the study population. However, to avert the impending dangers (cervical cancer) posed by cervical lesions in the society, modesty in sexual exploitation and decent lifestyles are highly imperative. Granulometria é um dos principais fatores que afetam a dinâmica de sedimentos em bacias hidrográficas, desde seu desprendimento do solo matriz até o transporte ou deposição pela rede e reservatório. Objetivou-se com esse trabalho analisar o comportamento granulométrico dos sedimentos em uma bacia do semiárido brasileiro, no bioma Caatinga e analisar a eficiência da aplicação de modelos de estimativa do padrão granulométrico do sedimentos desprendido das encostas. O estudo foi realizado na bacia hidrográfica do Pentecoste, situada no semiárido do Ceará. A parte experimental da pesquisa foi realizada na Bacia Experimental do Vale do Curú (BEVC) com coleta de dados pluviométricos e hidrossedimentológicos, amostras de solo da bacia de captação, precipitação diária e de escoamentos superficiais, durante a quadra chuvosa entre os anos de 2015 e 2017. Modelos de desprendimento de sedimentos divulgados na literatura foram testados e aplicados para a área de estudo. Os resultados mostraram que o modelo de desprendimento de sedimento da encosta proposto por Foster et al. (1981) apresentou os melhores resultados quando comparado aos demais, com coeficiente de Nash e Sutcliff (NS) de 0,99, em ambiente de cobertura vegetal mista. Evaluation of the application of detachment models in the experimental basin of the Brazilian semi-arid region A B S T R A C TSize grain is one of the main factors that affect sediment dynamics in watersheds, from its detachment from the soil to the transport or deposition through the drainage network and reservoir. The objective of this research was to analyze the granulometric behavior of the sediments in a Brazilian semi-arid basin in the Caatinga biome and to analyze the efficiency of the application of models for the estimation of the granulometric pattern of sediments detached on slopes. The study was carried out in the Pentecost basin, located in the semi-arid region of Ceará. The experimental part of the research was conducted in the Curú Valley Experimental Basin (BEVC) with rainfall and hydrosedimentological data collection, soil samples from the catchment basin, daily precipitation and surface runoff during the rainy season between 2015 and 2017. Models of sediment release disclosed in the literature were tested and applied to the study area. The results showed that the slope sediment detachment model proposed by Foster et al. How does self-disclosure work in preaching? This study explores that question empirically, using a variety of data collection methods such as sermon analysis, focus groups, and interviews. Self-disclosure is an ambiguous concept in homiletical and theological literature, and it remains an ambiguous concept when considered from an empirical approach. Our focus is on how self-disclosure works brings to the fore three different homiletical processes: negotiating homiletical space, shaping the homiletical relationship, and performing self-disclosure. This study argues that researching implicit self-disclosure provides a better, though more complex, way of understanding the public presence of the preacher, than an analysis of the explicit use of the first pronoun “I” in preaching.

In 1754, the Scottish minister John Gillies (1712–1796) published a collection of historical accounts concerning “remarkable periods of the success of the Gospel.” Its composer was a spider in a web of correspondents in Europe and North America who believed they were living in an extraordinary time of revival in Christianity. Collective conversions and signs of repentance and faith were reported from all parts of the world and placed in a large eschatological perspective. After the Protestant Reformation—the climax of church history since the New Testament—a great decline had set in comparable to the Middle Ages. The “Great Awakening” seemed to recapture the spirit of the first Pentecost and offered prospects for a further extension of God's Kingdom. By means of missionary work among the heathen peoples, the Gospel would reach the ends of earth. Finally, after the collective conversion of the Jews and a millennium of peace, the time would come for the Lord of the Church to appear on the clouds of heaven to gather the harvest of all times.

Writer. The findings and conclusions (1) that the inerrancy of the Bible is very important to be studied by believers, because it has implications for all areas of life. (2) The prophecy of the book of Joel 2:28-32 began to be fulfilled at Pentecost when the disciples received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and will end until the perfect one comes the second time, namely Jesus Christ the Lord. (3) The Bible never states that prophecy ends, if the Lord Jesus has not come a second time. ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the temporal stability of total organic carbon (TOC) of soils under different uses in areas with Caatinga vegetation. The experiment was conducted in an experimental farm that encompasses a watershed in the Curu River Valley, in Pentecoste, state of Ceara, Brazil. Soil samples were collected in two areas with Caatinga vegetation under different uses-one with a 35-year preserved area (CP35) and one with a 30-year pasture area (CR30)-and the sampling points were distributed using a 30×30 m uniform grid. Soil samples of the 0-0.2 m layer were collected between February 2016 and April 2017 to determine TOC; and nonparametric Spearman's correlation, mean relative difference (MRD), and temporal stability index (TSI) tests were applied to evaluate TOC stability. The Spearman's test showed a higher correlation between collection dates for CR30 than for CP35. The DRM showed more points with relative differences approaching zero for CP35, and more points with lower standard deviation for CR30. The TSI indicated a greater number of points to be used for CR30 because they have better temporal stability. Therefore, the TOC of the CR30 has better temporal stability than that of the CP35, presenting TSI of approximately 1.5-fold that of the CP35. The thinning of the vegetation in CR30 homogenized the soil TOC, whereas the fallow area, which were preserved, had greater heterogeneity.

Mean daily nutrient and food (g/d) intakes were calculated from the food records.SettingThe study took place in two monasteries in the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete.SubjectsThe study involved ten healthy monks aged 25–65 years, with BMI > 30 kg/m2, who had been performing fasts for the last 24·4 (sd10·4) years and lived in monasteries in Crete during April–June 2005.ResultsNutrient and food intake profiles were more favourable during the fasting week, when participants had lower intakes of total and saturated fat andtrans-fatty acids, and higher intakes of dietary fibre, Fe, folate, legumes and fish/seafood. Ca intake was lower when participants fasted, whereas consumption of dairy products, meat and eggs increased significantly in the non-fasting week. Systolic blood pressure was significantly higher, whereas blood lipid levels were more favourable during the fasting week.ConclusionsThe periodic vegetarianism recommended by the Greek Orthodox Church contributes to the favourable profiles of several biomarkers of health among this sample of monks. The fasting rituals described are an important component of the traditional diet of Crete and should be emphasised in nutrition education programmes promoting this Mediterranean eating pattern.

The article analyzes the approaches and methods of sublimation of cultural and social trauma among believers using the example of localized cases. The subject of research is the established mechanism of experiencing and rethinking the traumatic experience between generations of believers of different faiths. The research question is posed by determining the role of religion as a compensatory social institution that registers the negative elements of the past in a soteriological aspect. The research field includes a part of the Western Urals as a traditionally multicultural region, characterized by the traditional residence of representatives of the so-called “non-traditional” religious communities. The study involved members of the local ummah, as well as Christians included in the communities of “classical” Pentecostals and Baptists belonging to the so-called “Separated Brotherhood”. The method of collecting information was a semi-standardized interview, verified through an appeal to the memoir publications of one of the groups. The respondents included believers whose older relatives belonging to the second or third generation were subjected to repressive influences. The main attention was paid to prevailing techniques that have doctrinal foundations and contribute to a change in the emotional vector in assessing the resulting traumatic experience. The concept of injury soteriology is introduced, in which injury is perceived as a way of self-improvement and solving life-saving tasks. Three models of sublimation of a trauma of the past are identified, associated with confessional belonging and forming different strategies for working with this trauma. The influence of these models on the value system of an individual and a group and on the formation of markers for assessing events is determined. A correlation was revealed between the way of perceiving the negative past, the level of individual participation of believers in the processes of commemoration and the basic teaching principles of the community. The legitimate role of religion in relation to traumatic experience built into the pan-religious soteriological concept is established.

Анотація:
The Pentecostal mission has always been labeled a mission for the number of people who believe in God. The Church Center is the main target, and social-cultural involvement is left alone. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the stages of involvement and social theology of Pentecostalism so that findings can become study material for driving social missions today. This research aims to explore the theological stages and social involvement of Pentecostalism. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative one, with data collection methods using a historical approach. The research results show that Pentecostalism at its initial formation in Azusa Street 1906, still needed to be sensitive to theology and social involvement. However, entering the 21st century, Pentecostals began to expand their mission concept to social involvement issues. The main reason for this involvement was and remains the reality of poverty in Pentecostal congregation members, which needs to be improved. This article is unique because it discusses the stages of Pentecostal involvement and social theology, which can be the basis for constructing a more relevant Pentecostalism in Indonesia.

This article examined the nexus and trajectories of Pentecostalism, kinship and the elderly in Akanran, Ona-Ara Local government, Oyo State, Nigeria. The article is exploratory and heuristic to better understand a neglected area in gerontology particularly as interface of what we call The Sociology of social construction of evil within African contemporary religious systems. Data collection was undertaken through qualitative methods of non-participant observation, In-depth Interview (IDI), Key Informant Interview (KII) and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data were content analysed. The article discussed the effects of Pentecostalism on kinship and the implications for the elderly. Generally, it explored the views of community members on Pentecostalism, its manifestations, influence on kinship, the family and the elderly. We examined the Christianity climates in Nigeria and Africa, the contemporary Pentecostal Christianity, the on-going Pentecostal manifestations, kinship networks among Pentecostals and their implications for the elderly. It was found that as variants of Pentecostalism emerge, care and support for the elderly is threatened and kinship networks are stressed in a number of ways.

Background: Matthew 20:20–28 contains Jesus’ teaching on a leadership model that is anchored on selflessness, love, and servanthood. Today, when this teaching is juxtaposed with some Pentecostal churches’ leadership situation in Nigeria, it is apparent that the opposite is the case. Some Pentecostal church leaders in Nigeria have demonstrated a leadership mentality that is focused on selfishness, materialism, and abuse of power.Objectives: The study provides a re-reading of Matthew 20:20–28 to reveal its implications for Pentecostal churches leadership in Nigeria.Method: This study is a qualitative research conducted through a triangulation of a historical-critical method and in-depth interview (IDI). The historical-critical approach was used to study the pericope, while IDI served as a means of data collection from respondents.Results: Matthew 20:20–28 paints a picture of servant leadership, which entails placing others above self, divine approval above human commendation, responsibility above position, contribution above recognition, and care above ownership.Conclusion: The pericope pierces deeply into the heart of the leadership problems in some Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, and calls for imitation of Jesus’ leadership model.Contribution: Drawing from the pericope, this study unfolds a biblical model of leadership that is crucial to lessening the current leadership problems in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

Pentecostalism, to which the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe belongs, is one of the fastest growing brands of Christianity in Zimbabwe. Most Pentecostal churches promise divine health, deliverance, miracles and prosperity to their members. In the Apostolic Faith Mission of Zimbabwe, women constitute the greater percentage of the church membership. Despite the fact that Pentecostal churches make promises of a good life, a church is generally expected to be a safe haven to its members. This paper wished to examine whether the Pentecostal church response to COVID-19 helped to build or destroy the mental health of its majority members, the women. The findings however show that the church mostly affected women’s mental health in a negative way as it grappled with the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article therefore contests the claim of providing a good life as done by some Pentecostal churches. This was a qualitative study and utilized findings from a sample of 15 members of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe who were selected using purposive sampling. The findings suggest that the women were stressed by the teachings on marriage and emphasis on collection of money, discrimination against single women, the prosperity gospel, and patriarchy.

Pentecostal Christians in Africa preach a pragmatic gospel that attempts to address social, practical and contextual concerns. Similar patterns may be seen in the emergence of neo-Pentecostalism in South Africa and other parts of the continent. Neo-Pentecostalism is commonly known for the use of God-talk that promises people solutions to their socio-economic issues such as unemployment and poverty if they obey the prescripts of the so-called ‘prophets’ or ‘man of God’. Nonetheless, the global devastation caused by the COVID-19 left much to be desired. In South Africa, it highlighted the high extent of gender-based violence (GBV) in addition to other societal issues. Although GBV has always been a problem in South Africa, its cases increased drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic to the point where GBV was also declared a pandemic. This has compelled various social structures to start exploring solutions to stop this conundrum. The overarching question posed in this article was how neo-Pentecostal rhetoric about God contributes to GBV cases in South Africa before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, given that God-talk has been utilised to influence people’s perceptions of and reactions to other societal concerns. As a result, this article aimed to investigate this subject while also outlining some potential solutions that African Pentecostals can consider as possible contributions to the struggle against GBV in contemporary South Africa. The study used a literature analysis to achieve this goal and it followed an interdisciplinary approach in the collection of the relevant data. These disciplines included theology, social sciences gender and sexuality studies. Therefore, the literature analysis focused on how neo-Pentecostalism intersect with gender and social issues that are actors in the rise of GBV in South Africa. Furthermore, the concept of God-talk was adopted as a theoretical framework guiding the discussion in this article, whilst the African ethic of Ubuntu [humanness] was proposed as an antidote that can be used in transforming God-talk and contributors of GBV in church and society. Ubuntu brings to consciousness that pastors and every member of society should treat each other as created in the image of God and with respect and humanness as we all exist because of and for others.Contributions: This article contributes to the body of knowledge aimed at finding solutions to GBV in South Africa. Finding solutions is critical as GBV continue to be a challenge in South Africa and elsewhere.

In order to be formidable and great in any given civilization, gender equality is a necessary condition. The fundamental formula for a functioning society calls for partnership and a fair division of labour between the sexes. Yet, a skewed approach has been used in which masculinity has taken precedence over femininity and women have constantly been left out of decision-making throughout history and in various communities. They are routinely discriminated against within political structures. These power structures are to blame for the ongoing underdevelopment, marginalization, and imbalance that they bring about. Recently, the Neo-Pentecostal movement have taken a significant step in the recognition and maximization of the inclusion of women in its religious hierarchy. As such they are giving women an eminent place of equal impetus with men, as such paving positive ways and encouraging gender sensitization in Nigerian society which is highly male oriented. This paper sees this move as a pathway for gender balanced education in Nigeria. The method applied in this research is a literary and descriptive method. It involves a qualitative approach which recruits the use of preliminary and post preliminary sources of data collection. The study found that the inclusiveness of women in the leadership hierarchical order in the neo-Pentecostal movements is a substantial achievement and it is worth emulating. It is a clear pathway to gender balanced education in Nigeria. It was recommended that 50% inclusion of women in all human endeavours will engender sustainable development in Nigeria and promote needed unity and above serve as a role model for other masculine oriented communities where justice and fairness are sorely needed.

I. Sevastianov collection (f. 270), no. 17 (Sv-17) and the Bulgarian National Library (Sts. Cyril and Methodius) in Sofia, no. 512 (KM-512).The collation of liturgical readings of the Gospel of Matthew (from the Pentecostal period of Synaxarion), based on 71 manuscripts, has shown that these two manuscripts have unusual readings (in terms of translation, additions, omissions, harmonization, etc.) that are characteristic only for these two lectionaries.The existence of the unusual readings of the Gospel of Matthew in these two lectionaries allows us to classify them as textologically homogeneous Church Slavonic manuscripts of the abbreviated lectionary.Keywords: Gospel of Matthew; lectionary, abbreviated, text criticism, Church Slavonic manuscript.

Purpose Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is highly emerging in the management literature. However, recent studies highlight the necessity to associate with reflections on this theme, usually approached from an economic perspective, propositions also derived from relational approaches. This paper aims to investigate associations between EO and social networks, specifically about the still little explored relational coupling/decoupling theme. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides an empirical and qualitative study of religious entrepreneurs. A total of 18 pastors responsible for creating and leading independent neo-Pentecostal churches located in Belo Horizonte/Brazil, selected using the snowball technique, participated in this qualitative, case-study research. Two analysis categories guided data collection: pastors’ EO (behaviors suggestive of their innovativeness, proactivity, competitive aggressiveness, risk-taking and autonomy) and churches’ social framework (the resources and attributes that pastors obtain from their institutional structure). Findings The study concludes that pastors combine attributes representing their EO and their social structure in developing their religious endeavors. Research limitations/implications Among the limitations are the restricted use of semi-structured interviews as a data collection source and the absence of data proving the churches’ performance. Originality/value The paper contributes by showing that entrepreneurs can influence the structure of their networks by using EO; proving that networks influence pastors’ EO; revealing recursivity between EO and networks; emphasizing a relational dimension of the EO construct and presenting new theoretical propositions that can be explored and tested in future investigations.

The manifestation and demonstration of spiritual gifts have always generated a lot of argument among Christians and non-Christians in Nigerian society. While some people deny the reality of the gifts thereby camping with the cessationists, other parties submit to the continuation of the spiritual gifts among the contemporary Christians. However, in scholarship the discourse has taken different dimensions which include the theological, effectual, biblical and philosophical perspectives with little attention paid to the socio-ethical aspect of the matter which is the major concern of this paper. The work is premised on Thomas Hobbes’ Theory of Psychological Egoism, which emphasises the benefit or reward as the motivating factor for every action performed by man, this article intends to investigate the alleged commercialization of prophetic gifts among the Nigerian pastors and to determine whether this is the major cause for the increase of the demonstration of charismatic gifts in the country. Interviews were conducted with Christians and ministers for data collection; which were complemented with relevant literature. The paper pays attention to charismatic display and Pentecostalism, current level of charismata in Nigerian Pentecostal churches, encouraging factors of charismatic activities and socio-ethical assessment of the display of spiritual gifts in Nigeria’s churches, while Christian morally pertinent ways of demonstrating spiritual gifts in an ethical manner is recommended

This article reports a study to investigate the use of religion by the political elites in the Kabwe district of the central province in Zambia. The study used a descriptive survey design of the qualitative strategy where an Interpretivist Research technique served as a foundation for data collection. The target population included four political parties in Kabwe district, church leaders from the Roman Catholic Church, United Church of Zambia, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah’s Witness, Pentecostal church, Mosque, officials from Church Mother Bodies, Civic leaders and lay people. The study drew upon a sample of 28 respondents and Semi-structured and Open-ended interview techniques were applied to obtain the required primary data. Transcripts of the interviews were analysed thematically for respondents’ perceptions of the use of religion in politics. The key findings revealed that religion was often utilized as a political tool by the political elite, where politicians utilised it to gain political mileage. Religious communities were also viewed by respondents as effective partners in the implementation of political agendas and or policies. Additionally, religious communities were seen as fixed and stable entities which had won the trust of local communities. By and large, the role played by religion in politics (through the identified religious bodies) was considered crucial for the survival of democracy in the two districts. Appropriate recommendations are made such as encouraging religious freedom where everybody will be free to seek the truth without any coercion or inhibition.

Climate change in South Africa is increasingly threatening the most vulnerable populations in rural areas of the country, such as the Limpopo province. Religious communities could be important actors in South Africa, and their role in sustainable development could be critical. Research on the capacities of religious communities for climate change adaptation is vital for reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14 and 15. This article drew on empirical research focusing on adaptive practices to climate change. It asked the following question: how do African Independent and Pentecostal churches located in the province of Limpopo relate to climate change in their communal and individual activities? To answer this question, qualitative semistructured individual interviews, group interviews and results from focus groups were used for data collection. The research learned that eco-theology is not the most prominent topic in the majority of the participants’ congregations and their communal activities. However, all the participants had noticed the effects of climate change in their immediate surroundings. As a consequence, these individuals took care of their surrounding environments. Focus groups were formed with the hope of consolidating individual efforts into a collective toolkit. This article concluded that the majority of the research participants are not knowledgeable about climate change as a concept. However, they are cognisant of the impact climate change has on them.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article was practical theology research. It was strengthened by research findings from agricultural sciences, ecology, development sciences, missiology and intercultural theology to propose an eco-theology from below based on individual adaptive measures to climate change.
