A paradigm shift has been observed from ‘moving of vehicles’ to ‘moving of persons’ while planning for transportation facilities in cities. Provision of integrated and barrier free pedestrian facilities is essential to ensure inclusive mobility. Pedestrian facilities are a critical component in producing a pedestrianfriendly environment. In India, the present facilities provided for the pedestrians are not efficient in general and crosswalks (zebra crossings) in particular. The pedestrian casualties in India have registered an increase of 11.7 percent in the year 2017, of which 31 percent have occurred on crosswalks. Therefore, an attempt has been made to overview the level of safety provided on the crosswalks. It has been found that majority of crosswalks are not fulfilling their intended purposes due to improper signage and markings, inadequate maintenance and bad surface condition. Another significant reason hampering the safety of pedestrians at crosswalks has been found to be inappropriate provision of guardrails and pedestrian refuge islands. Hence, some measures have been suggested to augment the pedestrian safety on the crosswalks.

Crossing points are not always 100% visible for drivers due to different factors (e.g., poor road maintenance, occlusion of vertical signs, and adverse weather conditions). USA estimated in 2015 the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles in 70,000 of whom 5,376 resulted in deceased people. To contribute in this field, this paper presents the design, implementation, and testing of a smart prototype system applied to pedestrian crossings—not regulated by semaphores—which try to reduce the accident rate on roads. The hardware and software system consists of a set of autonomous, intelligent, and wireless low-cost devices that generate a visual warning barrier perceived by drivers from a suitable distance when pedestrians traverse a crosswalk. In this way, drivers can reduce the speed of their vehicles and stop safely. The system’s intelligence is carried out by a fuzzy controller that performs sensory fusion at both low level and high level with various types of sensors from local and neighboring devices. The tests conducted have determined an average success of 94.64% and a precision of 100%, thus corresponding with a very good test according to a ROC analysis. As a result, the system proposed has been patented and extended to international PCT.

The defi nition of pedestrian spaces and their more advanced phase - integrated pedestrian spaces is proposed in the article. The physiological capabilities of the pedestrian, including people with limited mobility, which form the parametric characteristics of pedestrian spaces, such as radius of the walking distance, absolute and to concrete objects, are identifi ed . The development dynamics of pedestrian spaces quantity and quality parameters over time is revealed.

The paper considers the problem of creating a barrier-free space in urban agrorecreational eco-complexes for people with disabilities. Foreign and domestic publications on this and related topics are analyzed. The purpose of the research is set and the main tasks are defined in accordance with the purpose. Materials and research methods are defined in this article. The main terms and concepts are considered: vertical farm, low-mobile population groups, barrier-free envi-ronment, etc. The peculiarities of the criterion of accessibility, the criterion of informativeness, comfort are deter-mined. The requirements for urban agrorecreational eco-complexes design taking into account the needs of the people with limited mobility are analyzed and classified. The main means of barrier-free space in urban agrorecreational eco-complexes are determined. The main means of accessibility for the elements of the outdoor space of urban agro-recreational eco-complexes are analyzed: outdoor ramp, ramp exit, increased pedestrian crossing, lifting device, external stairs, parking space for a person with disabilities. The main means of accessibil-ity for the elements of the interior space of urban agro-recreational eco-complexes are considered: internal ramp, internal stairs, ramp, elevator, internal lifting device, escalator, bathroom for people with disabilities. The main means of universal (inclusive) design for elements of external and internal space of urban agro-recreational eco-complexes are revealed. Tactile elements of accessibility are considered: tactile guide strip, warning tactile strip, information tactile strip, tactile information pointer. Visual elements of accessibility were identified and analyzed: contrasting colored signs, information boards and informants. The sound elements of accessibility are analyzed: voice informers and sound beacons-alarms. An example of a voice informant combined with an information board and a tactile information index is presented. The article examines the natural and climatic features of the region and the city of Uzhhorod, which affect the specifics of the development of near riverside areas. The Uzh River is formed in the mountainous areas of the Carpathians. The functioning of the river ecosystem changes when it reaches the sloping terraces and plains. Anthropogenic pressure of the city causes an increase of problems in the process of its self-reproduction. The development of the city, provided by the Master plan of the city, architectural and planning means and initiatives of the city residents determine the connections and relationships between the main components of the system: river, city and man. Architectural and spatial approaches to the design of a harmoniously integrated system of the river and the city are based on its self-reproduction as part of nature, primarily from a biological standpoint. Also, modern global urban trends in the opening of cities to rivers and the design of new "waterfront" of cities contribute to the cleaning of rivers and landscaping of surrounding areas. In the Master plan of the city of Uzhhorod, the landscape and recreational zones occupy an important place. The zones of the objects of the nature reserve fund are defined to ensure the preservation of unique natural landscapes with special conditions of use. Recreational zones of active entertainment are the urban areas of common use with appropriate objects for active recreation of the citizens as well as community centres. Considering the existing transport connections of Uzhhorod and pedestrian paths to the embankment territories, their location almost in the middle of the city as a coherence of the periphery with the central area of the city, the idea of creating a single system of embankment areas of the city was worked out, which will be interconnected by barrier-free bicycle tracks and pedestrian paths

Much affordable housing has poor accessibility to external urban public space facilities because of its suburb location, which makes the residents’ daily life and social activities mainly depend on the internal public space of the community. Such affordable housing needs urgent upgrading of the internal public space based on the thorough understanding of the low-income residents’ demand ranking. The internal spaces’ transformation will significantly improve the living environment and the quality of residents’ life, and it also provides a way to promote social equity and sustainable urban development. By using the multi-source data and the two-step floating catchment area method, this paper selects typical affordable housing, which has poor accessibility to external urban public space, as our case study. After establishing the evaluation index system, IPA (Importance and Performance Analysis) is used to calculate the quadrant value of each index so as to clarify the upgrading urgency indexes from the residents’ demand for internal public space of affordable housing. Studies have shown that tables, chairs and pavilions, pedestrian systems, retail commercial facilities, medical and health facilities, and recreational space have the strongest urgency for upgrading; fitness facilities, exercise space, barrier-free access, guidance signs and parking lot design are the next most urgent indexes; Recreational facilities, entrances/exits of the residential area, green space in front of t residential buildings, and cultural facilities all have general urgency for upgrading.

The authors address the problem of development of urban waterfront territories. Therefore the focus is on the basic principles of the organization of public recreational areas. The relevance of the interest is generally stipulated by the following reasons. Firstly, due to the analysis of the domestic and overseas waterfront design experience it seems reasonable to point out that the quality of urban living depends directly on the viability of open public spaces. The waterfront area proves to be a major element of urban tissue that can be related as the city image. Secondly, it can be reasonable to outline a range of issues that are extremely important for many cities in Russia such as the lack of land improvement, comfortable living environment and architectural-aesthetic identity in terms of the image of waterfront areas. The article aims to reveal basic principles of spatial organization of urban waterfront areas. The study is carried out on the material of the domestic and overseas experience in design solu-tions and existing public recreational areas. This implies the analysis and comparison of the following cases: waterfront revival in great cities and suburban towns within Russia as well as overseas experi-ence on regeneration of abandoned waterfront areas. Furthermore, there is the description of the main methods, principles, prospective directions in design management and architectural-aesthetic features of each considering design solution. The methodological basis of the research incorporates architectur-al, art, historical and cultural approaches. In terms of key results of the research we consider highlighting such principles of the organiza-tion of urban waterfronts as multilayer communication structure which are the priority for pedestrian circulation and multilevel waterfront environment; the ability to access water bodies, the addition of focal points, viable and barrier-free environment. Moreover, one of the most important factors is the concentration of urban recreational areas with diverse multifunctional zones that can be used both in summer and winter seasons. The preservation of ecological framework and maintenance of biodiversi-ty, the reliance on water protection zones as well as the appliance of eco-materials are also considered to be a range of inalienable measures in urban waterfront design. Waterfronts cannot be designed sepa-rately from adjacent urban bodies that, for example, can represent historical value. Architectural-aesthetic image of urban waterfronts should meet the modern tendencies in architecture, urban plan-ning and design or emphasize historical identity of urban development. The overall statements are supported by the analysis of the following design solutions: the embankment of Zaryadye Park in Moscow; the design of the waterfront regeneration in Divnogorsk in Krasnoyarsk region; the design of Riga waterfront in Latvia, the design of Seine quayside reinvention in Paris; the East River waterfront in New York; the waterfront arear HafenCity in Hamburg. Overall, due to the results of our research the organization of urban waterfronts incorporates a variety of crucial factors (in terms of architecture, urban planning and design, imageability, ecology, economy etc) which add the complexity to the designing process. Nevertheless, the implementation of the basic principles of design provides waterfronts with the high level of diversity and comfort for cities’ inhabitants.

Summary The design of the built environment in communities influences active transport and physical activity levels of citizens. Existing instruments for quantitatively assessing built environments were developed for use in urban areas and mainly by experts. Participative assessment of built environment modifications (PABEM) is a needs assessment tool that involves citizens and community decision-makers within a structured process for identifying needed changes to promote walking and cycling in rural areas. This article describes the development of the PABEM process and evaluates its initial use in three rural towns in Austria. PABEM consists of the following seven steps: (i) qualitative interviews; (ii) expert assessment of the built environment; (iii) citizen assessment of the built environment; (iv) social media interaction; (v) household questionnaire; (vi) participatory workshop; and (vii) evaluation and scoring workshop. The main modifications identified as necessary in rural towns were the revitalization of existing walking and cycling facilities and the construction of new barrier-free and safe sidewalks. In addition cycling routes to schools, to public transport facilities and to central public places as well as cleaner and inviting seating, a car-free school environment, speed reduction in town centres, more crosswalks and improved cleanliness in public places were also deemed necessary modifications. PABEM’s provisions to ensure collaborative participation of citizens and local decision-makers fostered a continuous dialogue about the requirements of the built environment, user needs and opportunities for realization throughout the whole process.

<p>Following a competitive tender in 2018, the City of Drammen, Norway, has commissioned a new bridge, which will replace the city bridge (Bybrua), an ageing structure across the river Drammenselva. Located at the heart of Drammen, the bridge will be a pivotal link in the local infrastructure network, improving connectivity for public transportation (bus lanes) and cycle networks while providing a safe and enjoyable route for pedestrians. Once finished, the bridge will significantly improve the quality of the public realm, providing direct access to the platforms of the local main station as well as tying into two new urban plazas at both ends of the bridge including the barrier free access to the re-developed riverbank. The design stage faced several technical challenges, including the spanning of a 170m-wide river with poor bedding conditions as well as the construction above live railway of the Drammen Station. Concerns over ice loading, temperature extremes and the impact of a marine climate had to be addressed and new concepts for pedestrian and road safety on deck were developed. Located in a prominent spot, great diligence has been given to developing a modern architectural language that is both elegant and functional and defines the bridge as a new landmark for the city. The paper explores the development of the design from concept to tender stage and discusses the technical and architectural challenges and how they have been addressed by the interdisciplinary team of engineers, architects, landscape architects and designers.</p>
