A paramedic or health care provider is a health professional that provides rapid response, emergency medical assessment, treatment and care to critically ill patients1. The word Paramedic is a combination of two words; para means "along the side of" and medic means "physician", so a paramedic works as an extender of the physician. He works under the direct supervision of a medical expert and is considered a “delegated practitioner”. Paramedical service is crucial for the effective running of the modern health care system and is the lifeline of the health sector2. Paramedics are trained, equipped and required to give emergency services not just in form of first aids, but may also include medical attention that may not warrant taking the patients to the hospital3. Over the past decade, paramedic scope of practice and clinical responsibilities has expanded significantly. Advanced clinical interventions previously carried out by physicians such as ultrasound, thoracotomy and endotracheal intubation are now becoming part of the health care professional. This concentrated experience in the use of highly technical, mechanical and electronic equipment and their availability to the patient make such personnel indispensable as assistants to physicians4. The dynamic nature of paramedics in terms of clinical practice demands continuous recognition and evaluation of the literature. Active research is essential for the translation of evidence into practice and education and is an integral part of the modern paramedic programs offered within higher education institutions. Thus there is an urgent need to launch a peer review journal in the field of paramedics that will publish high standard scientific articles and will be available to researchers and institutes. The scope of this journal includes both basic and clinical research including original articles, reviews, clinical case presentations and case reports. It aims to contribute to a better understanding of the disease and provide a reference for health professionals and researchers.

Abstract The profession of paramedic is a recent profession functioning in Poland since 1992. Over those 27 years the training, the role and responsibilities given to paramedics have undergone many changes. Initially, paramedics were trained in two-year colleges (post-secondary schools) and were not qualified to administer medical emergency treatment (medical rescue procedures) at the place of accidents. At present, they are educated at universities and are qualified to apply emergency medical treatment by themselves, inter alia to ensure the safe transport of the injured person in a life-threatening emergency, provide mental support to the injured, and carry out health education and promotion. Moreover, they are the core personnel of the State Medical Rescue System (PRM). The goal of the study was to present the history of the establishment of paramedical profession and its current role and responsibilities in the PRM.

Introduction: Ultrasonography (US), performed in the Emergency Department (ED) by Emergency Physicians, is well established. Educational studies have shown some promise in training paramedics in US use. We have developed and piloted a novel curriculum for paramedic US education. Methods: Based on an informal needs assessment, an US curriculum for paramedics was developed to include: Basic principles, Focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST), cardiac, and vascular access. Participants included ED-based and pre-hospital paramedics including all paramedics with critical care training who routinely perform vascular access and procedural sedation within our ED. Comparisons were made using paired non-parametric tests (GraphPad). Results: Participants (N=9) were provided pre- reading materials prior to completing a 6-hour course, consisting of a mix of didactic and practical sessions with live models and vascular access phantoms. Each module was introduced with a 30 minute didactic session, led by an Emergency Physician trained in US, followed immediately by a 1 hour hands-on session lead by either an Emergency Physician or an Emergency Medicine Resident at a learner to instructor ratio of 3:1. At the end of the course, participants were asked to complete a short 10 minute survey that included (1) an assessment of the course quality with regard to preparatory material and course content/delivery (4 point Likert scale; excellent, good, fair, poor); (2) self reported US knowledge pre and post course on a scale of 1-10 (10 high, 1 low); (3) general yes/no questions related to the future of ECCU paramedical and (4) a subjective written section for additional comments. All participants rated the content favourably: 97% scoring it as excellent, and 3% as good. The participants median self-reported US knowledge score increased from 2/10 (IQR 2-3) to 8/10 (IQR 7.25-8; p=0.009) post- course. All comments from the text field were positive in nature. Conclusion: We report a paramedic US course curriculum, which when piloted resulted in high learner satisfaction and a high rate of self reported improvement in US knowledge. Further study will include an assessment of knowledge acquisition and practical performance. Future modifications in our curriculum will be based on needs assessment and may include additional modules.

Introduction: Diabetes is on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa, and particularly in Senegal where the latest prevalence estimates are around 3.4%. The region of Saint-Louis is a special case in terms of prevalence, since it far exceeds the national average, with more than 10% of the local population in 2011, or 30,000 to 40,000 cases. This epidemiological evolution of diabetes in the department of Saint-Louis is the direct consequence of many causes, including the lack of continuing medical education for paramedical staff. Material and methods: Our work proposes to return to the need for continuing medical education of paramedical staff in the department of Saint-Louis, through two surveys carried out with the diabetic people: a base line survey carried out before the training, and an end line survey after the diabetes training. The general objective is to assess the skills of health workers and their effectiveness in the management of diabetes and its complications, as well as the quality of diabetes management. Results: We found that the level of knowledge of nurses in charge of health posts and other paramedical staff is relatively heterogeneous. The average level obtained for right answers (66.76% during the base line survey and 82.4% during the end line survey) reflects the lack of continuing education concerning the diabetic disease in the department of Saint-Louis. Conclusion: The assessment of the knowledge of nursing staff in the department of Saint-Louis to which we proceeded is edifying. It is part of a logic of improving knowledge of diabetic disease and its complications. It shows that in the peripheral health structures, the need for continuing medical education is real.

Paramedics often come across death because of the nature of their work. Attending an incident involving the death of a patient could affect a paramedic's mental health. A scoping literature review surrounding the readiness and education regarding death in the prehospital setting for paramedic students was carried out. Given the potential impact upon practitioner mental health, the review aimed to determine the quality and extent of new research regarding education in death for paramedics. Four themes arose from the review: inadequate preparation; methods of death education; improved confidence; and implications for more research.

Background: India needs around 2,77,000 donations annually to perform 1,00,000 corneal transplants. To enhance the procurement of corneal donations further, raising the level of public education on eye donation was the most important first step. The Govt. of India under the 11th 5-year plan envisages eliminating avoidable blindness completely by 2020. The aim and objective of the study was to compare the awareness of eye donation and willingness to donate eyes among medical and paramedical students. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out among 400 final year MBBS students and interns and also among the final year B.Sc. nursing students and at Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital, Bhubaneswar from August 2018 to September 2018.Results: The study participants were in the age group of 18-25 years. While 100% medical students had heard about organ donation, 85.5% of paramedical students heard about organ donation. Positive opinion regarding donation of eye post death was got from all the medical students as against 85% of paramedical students. More than 1/3rd of the study participants in both the groups were willing to donate eyes and know more regarding the same and also had a fair idea regarding shortage of donors in India. Conclusions: Awareness of eye donation is better in medical students compared to paramedical students, preferably due to the exposure and study curriculum. Most of the students in both groups were inclined to pledge for eye donation. Awareness regarding eye donation will form the prime base for the elimination of avoidable blindness in India.

Background: Paramedics experience a range of ethical dilemmas in the course of their work. To date, ethical dilemmas by Australian paramedics have not been documented. With the scope of practice becoming increasingly complex, paramedic education may not have evolved to meet holistic professional demands. Aim: To describe the ethical dilemmas experienced by contemporary Australian paramedics. Methods: An online survey, based on a previous instrument, was used to explore a range of ethical dilemmas. Findings: Paramedics face a range of ethical dilemmas in their everyday practice. While several demographic variables were associated with different perceptions, the results of this study highlight that a paramedic's years of experience is most consistently associated with their perception of ethical dilemmas. Conclusion: Australian paramedics experience a range of ethical dilemmas consistent with previous international findings. Years of experience in the profession features heavily and is relied upon more so than education, suggesting that educational approaches to ethics education in paramedicine need to be reconsidered.

Aim. To assess the dental anxiety level among dental, medical, and pharmacy students of MAHSA University, Malaysia.Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among 1500 undergraduate students of MAHSA University. The Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) was used to measure dental anxiety among the study population. The responses were assessed by 5-point likert scale ranging from 1 to 5. The level of anxiety was categorized into lowly anxious (5–11), moderately anxious (12–18), and severely anxious ≥19. Out of 1500 students enrolled, 1024 students (342 males and 682 females) completed and returned the questionnaire having response rate of 68.26%.Results. There was a statistically significant difference (P<0.001) when the mean dental anxiety scores were compared among the three faculties and dental students had lowest mean score (11.95 ± 4.21). The fifth year (senior) dental students scored significantly (P=0.02) lower mean anxiety score as compared to the first dental students (junior). The students were anxious mostly about tooth drilling and local anesthetic injection.Conclusions. Dental students have a significantly low level of dental anxiety as compared with medical and pharmacy students. Incorporation of dental health education in preuniversity and other nondental university curriculums may reduce dental anxiety among the students.

Graphically presented algorithms are presently used in many settings worldwide for the diagnosis, management, and teaching of curative health services. There is potential as well for using such algorithms for teaching and counseling in the preventive services, especially in family planning services. The employment of paramedical or lesser trained workers in family planning or management requires careful attention to skill development in all phases of training. The use of graphically presented algorithms may simplify this process of skill development. In addition, the algorithms provide guidelines for use in the field by those providing family planning services, and for program management and supervision. Examples of algorithms used in paramedical services are presented. The development of two algorithms are discussed in detail, 1) an algorithm for introduction of contraceptives during lactation, and 2) an algorithm for supervision of data collection.

Inter-professional learning is helpful for students to identify other professionals for team work and collaboration which results in improved patient care out come and also improve Communication among health professionals and patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between readiness and perception of students towards inter-professional learning. A correlation, cross-sectional study was done with Two hundred and eighty five undergraduate Nursing and Paramedical students from Jan, 2018 to May, 2018. Convenient sampling was used to collect data. The Readiness for Inter-Professional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS) were used to measure the readiness and perception of students regarding inter-professional leaning. The data were analyzed using software Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) (Version 21). Spearman rho correlation test was used to explore the relationship of variables. The results showed statically significant positive correlation between the readiness and Perception of students regarding inter-professional learning (p=.000). This study indicated that there is strong positive correlation between readiness and perception of students towards inter-professional learning but students have least response towards team work and collaboration. Study suggests that inter-professional education should introduce in the curriculum of nursing and paramedical students to promote team work and share learning.Int. J. Soc. Sc. Manage. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the educational institutions to implement the mandatory virtual learning in medical education. It is undeniable that electronic gadget aided learning have a significant role to play during a pandemic. Both faculty and students are getting accustomed to this ‘New Normalcy’. Therefore, it is of interest to determine the effectiveness and perception of virtual teaching and learning during the COVID 19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 336 medical and 336 paramedical students of both the genders with age group of 17 - 21 years participated. The data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS software. The shift from class room teaching to virtual learning has led to many health issues among students such as eye strain, anxiety, depression, musculoskeletal problems and obesity. The students also had inadequate time to interact with faculties. Data shows that virtual learning an alternative mode to traditional method during a pandemic.

In 2020, the Mintrud of Russia approved a number of professional standards for specialists with secondary professional medical education. The implementation of professional standards is called to actualize outdated normative base concerning functions of medical workers, including assurance of separation of labor functions and actions of physicians and medical nurses, facilitation of development of job descriptions, and minimizing number of conflicts that occur during process of work activities at personnel functions crossing. The medical organization, focusing on requirements established by professional standards, can more competently develop personnel policy, make timely changes in staff list, establish progressive remuneration system. In this regard, it is useful to learn to what extent approved professional standards facilitate solution of practical problems of medical organizations. The article presents results of comparative analysis of three pairs of professional standards for paramedical personnel and specialists with higher education in comparable specialties. Introduction: Delegation of controlled medical acts by physicians to paramedics is an important component of the prehospital care framework. Where directives indicate that physician input is needed before proceeding with certain interventions, online medical control (a “patch”) exists to facilitate communication between a paramedic and a Base Hospital Physician (BHP) to request an order to proceed with that intervention. Many factors contribute to success or failure of effective interpersonal communication during a patch call. The aim of this study was to examine areas of potential improvement in communication between paramedics and physicians during the patch call. Methods: Prehospital paramedic calls that included a mandatory patch point (excluding requests for termination of resuscitation and those records which were unavailable) were identified through review of all patch records from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017 for Paramedic Services in our region. Written Ambulance Call Reports (ACRs) and audio recordings of paramedic patches were obtained and reviewed. Pre-specified time intervals, clinical factors, specific patch requests and resulting orders from the BHP to the paramedics were extracted. Differences between groups were compared using t-tests. Results: 214 records were initially identified and screened. 91 ACRs and audio patch records were included in the analysis. 51/91 (56%) of patch order requests for interventions were granted by the BHP. Clarification of information provided by the paramedic or reframing of the paramedic's request was required less often, but not statistically significant, in calls ultimately resulting in granted requests versus those that were not granted (mean 1.4 versus 1.7, Δ-0.28; 95% CI -0.75-0.18 p = 0.64). The mean time from first contact with the BHP to statement of the request was similar in patches where the request was granted and not granted (44.9 versus 46.3, Δ-1.4; 95% CI -12.9-10.2, p = 0.49). Conclusion: The communication between BHPs and paramedics is an important and under-investigated component of prehospital emergency care. This retrospective review presents some novel targets for further research and potential education in patch communication to improve efficiency and quality of prehospital care for patients.

Medical and, in particular, nursing education is an important part of health care reform. The ability of a health worker to take an active part in the implementation of reforms (both as a leader and as an executor) implies continuous professional development, improvement of specialist competencies, starting from the first steps in professional education and ending with postgraduate education throughout the professional period. In this context, the study of the experience of training medical professionals, in particular, junior and middle level, in the past becomes extremely relevant, because it is obvious that to create a new one is possible only on the basis of historical experience.Unfortunately, during the former Soviet Union and the first years of Ukraine's independence, scientists did not have enough opportunities to conduct unbiased research on the history of medical education in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods based on modern methodological bases. The authors reviewed the literature on the development of nursing education in Ukraine in the 20th ‒ early 21st century. The scientific works of this period present a rich factual material that allows us to consider them an important contribution to the history of medical education in Ukraine. The authors note that independent research on the theory and practice of nursing education in the Soviet period was not carried out, so of great value in studying the principles of theoretical and practical training of nurses is the publication of certain aspects of training in specialized professional periodicals.During the years of “perestroika” and the first years of independence, a number of publications were published on generalizing foreign experience on this topic and substantiating proposals to improve the training of nurses, midwives, paramedics, pharmacists and other professionals in the field. The works of Ukrainian medical educators, who have enriched the historical and pedagogical field with new knowledge on the theoretical and professional training of future medical professionals, identified new areas of education and health care reform processes are of particular importance. At the same time, the authors conclude that scientific research reveals primarily various aspects of professional training of future medical professionals with higher education, and there is almost no research on the training of “mid-level” specialists, including nurses. Keywords: medical education, nursing education, nursing, paramedical staff, medical workers, health care system, medical science, professional training, historiography.

ObjectivesThis research aimed to fill a current knowledge gap, namely the current scope of clinical role of paramedics in primary care, in relation to specific constructs such a level of education and clinical experience.SettingThe survey was distributed to paramedics in primary care across the UK through the College of Paramedics.ParticipantsA total of 341 surveys were returned (male=215). 90% of responses were from paramedics in England, 1.7% from paramedics in Northern Ireland, 4.6% from paramedics in Scotland and 2.9% from paramedics in Wales. This represents approximately 33% of the primary care paramedic workforce in England and Wales. Estimates for percentages in Northern Ireland and Scotland are unavailable due to the lack of workforce datasets capturing paramedics in primary care.ResultsConsiderable variation was found in job titles, level of education and provision of clinical supervision of paramedics in primary care. Differing levels of practice were noted, despite guidance documents that attempt to standardise the role. Statistical analysis of quantitative data highlighted that relationships exist between paramedic clinical exposure in primary care, level of education, and ability of independently prescribe medicines and the extent to which clinical presentations are seen and examinations performed. However, free-text responses indicated that challenges in relation to access to further education and clinical supervision to support clinical development resulted in frustration for paramedics who work in this setting.ConclusionsAs well as offering an insight into the demographics of the primary care paramedic work force, there is indication of the clinical scope of role undertaken in this setting. Based on our findings, we recommend changes to education and support, governance and legislation to ensure paramedics employed in primary care can work to achieve the full extent of their professional capability.

The researcher conducted a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme on COVID-19 among 110 randomly selected paramedical students of Popular Institute of Medical Foundation, Varanasi, India with the study objectives to assess the knowledge on COVID-19, associate the demographic variable with the knowledge on COVID-19, and compare the pre-test and post-test values. The level of knowledge about COVID-19 was gathered using a standardised Da-In Park tool. After arranging and analysing the data, the results of the pre-test showed that 43.63% of the samples did not have sufficient knowledge, 56.36% had moderate knowledge and no sample had good knowledge. The researchers examined the values after the COVID-19 structured curriculum test, which showed that the structured curriculum had a positive effect on improving participants’ knowledge of COVID-19 (t value was 14.07 with a p value of 0.001) and the result was significant at p < 0.5. The study deduces that though the country has been through a lot of changes and methods in imparting health educational knowledge on COVID-19 from the first hit of COVID infection in India, still there is a great amount of lag among the people, even healthcare professional students, on knowledge related to COVID-19. The study clearly shows us that improvement in education through all media and social media might have a great impact on improving knowledge.

Introduction:Evidence-based training and curriculum are seen as vital in order to be successful in preparing paramedics for an effective disaster response. The creation of broadly recognized standard core competencies to support the development of disaster response education and training courses for general health care providers and specific health care professionals will help to ensure that medical personnel are truly prepared to care for victims of mass casualty events.Aim:To identify current Australian operational paramedic’s specific disaster management education and knowledge as it relates to disaster management core competencies identified throughout the literature and the frequency of measures/techniques which these paramedics use to maintain competency and currency. Methods:Paramedics from all states of Australia were invited to complete an anonymous online survey. Two professional bodies distributed the survey via social media and a major ambulance service was surveyed via email. Results:The study population includes 130 respondents who self-identified as a currently practicing Australian paramedic. Paramedics from all states except South Australia responded, with the majority coming from Queensland Ambulance Service (N= 81%). In terms of experience, 81.54% of respondents report being qualified for greater than 5 years. Initial analysis shows that despite the extensive experience of the practitioners surveyed when asked to rate from high to low their level of knowledge of specific disaster management core competencies a number of gaps exist.Discussion:Core competencies are a defined level of expertise that is essential or fundamental to a particular job, and serve to form the foundation of education, training, and practice for operational service delivery. While more research is needed, these results may help inform industry, government, and education providers to better understand and to more efficiently provide education and ongoing training to paramedics who are responsible for the management of disaster within the Australian community.

Abstract Objective Progression in Anglo-American models of out-of-hospital care has resulted in the development of alternative roles for paramedics, including advanced paramedics providing teleconsultations to frontline paramedics. Traditionally provided by physicians, little is known about how paramedics perceive peer-to-peer teleconsultations. This research aimed to explore paramedic perceptions of paramedic-delivered teleconsultations. Methods This investigation employed a constructivist grounded theory methodology. Six focus groups were conducted with purposive and theoretical sampling and data analyzed using open coding and continual comparative analysis. Results 33 paramedics from across British Columbia, Canada, participated in the focus groups. Seven key themes emerged during the focus groups; the perceived roles and status of paramedic specialists and physicians in healthcare, the influence of relationships and culture on clinical consultations, practicalities of out-of-hospital care and the importance of lived experience, provision of appropriate clinical advice, professional trust and respect, mentorship in out-of-hospital care and clinical governance and education requirements. This led to the development of the grounded theory paramedics increasing ownership of their profession. Conclusion Paramedics reported a number of areas in which paramedic-delivered teleconsultations provided benefits not seen with traditional physician-delivered teleconsultation model. Emergency health systems delivering an Anglo-American model of care should consider the possible benefits of paramedic-delivered teleconsultations.

AbstractObjectiveTwo major processes underlie human decision-making: experiential (intuitive) and rational (conscious) thinking. The predominant thinking process used by working paramedics and student paramedics to make clinical decisions is unknown.MethodsA survey was administered to ground ambulance paramedics and to primary care paramedic students. The survey included demographic questions and the Rational Experiential Inventory-40, a validated psychometric tool involving 40 questions. Twenty questions evaluated each thinking style: 10 assessed preference and 10 assessed ability to use that style. Responses were provided on a five-point Likert scale, with higher scores indicating higher affinity for the style in question. Analysis included both descriptive statistics and t tests to evaluate differences in thinking style.ResultsThe response rate was 88.4% (1172/1326). Paramedics (n=904) had a median age of 36 years (IQR 29–42) and most were male (69.5%) and primary or advanced care paramedics (PCP=55.5%; ACP=32.5%). Paramedic students (n=268) had a median age of 23 years (IQR 21–26), most were male (63.1%) and had completed high school (31.7%) or an undergraduate degree (25.4%) prior to paramedic training. Both groups scored their ability to use and favourability toward rational thinking significantly higher than experiential thinking. The mean score for rational thinking was 3.86/5 among paramedics and 3.97/5 among paramedic students (p<0.001). The mean score for experiential thinking was 3.41/5 among paramedics and 3.35/5 among paramedic students (p=0.06).ConclusionWorking paramedics and student paramedics prefer and perceive that they have the ability to use rational over experiential thinking. This information adds to our current knowledge on paramedic decision-making and is potentially important for developing continuing education and clinical support tools.

Background: Self-medication is practiced universally. Having medical knowledge plays a vital role in its prevalence. It is more prevalent in higher education course students especially medical students. However, it is increasing in dental and paramedical students. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate self-medication among medical, dental and para-medical students in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire based study was conducted among 449 undergraduate students. They were divided into three groups. A questionnaire was developed based on literature. The questionnaire was validated and finalised. The paper questionnaire was administered to students. The data collected from questionnaires was analysed. The results were expressed as percentages and frequencies. Results: The male female ratio of students who filled questionnaire was 65:35. All the students (100%) reported that they practice self-medication. The most common reason for self-medication was prior experience (36%) in group A as well as in group B (46%), but in group C, 39% mentioned no serious problem. Main information source was family members in all the groups (A 57%, B 53%, C 29%) followed by advice from senior/friends. Fever was most common symptom reported (29%) by group A followed headache (28%) in group C and cough and cold (23%) in group B. The commonest group of drugs used is cough syrups (25%) in group B, followed by analgesics (23%) in group C and antipyretics (21%) in group A.Conclusions: Self-medication is growing among dental and paramedical students too. It is necessary to educate them about self-medication to prevent future disastrous consequences as well as to make them aware of appropriate use of self-medication.

Objective A growing body of research indicates that paramedics may have a greater role to play in health care service provision, beyond the traditional models of emergency health care. The aim of this study was to identify and synthesise the literature pertaining to the role of paramedic-initiated health education within Australia, with specific consideration of metropolitan, rural and remote contexts. Methods A literature review was undertaken using the Ovid Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), EMBASE and Scopus databases. The search time frame was limited from January 2007 to November 2017. The search was performed using key paramedic search terms in combination with keywords such as health education, rural, metropolitan, remote and Australia. Reference lists from relevant papers were also reviewed. Results Fourteen articles met the inclusion criteria for synthesis. Health education in the Australian paramedic context relates largely to expanded-scope paramedics, health promotion and the role of paramedics as key members of local communities. There were no studies specifically related to the paramedic role in health education, although many papers referred to health education as one of many roles paramedics engage in today. Conclusion This review highlights a broadening of paramedicine’s traditional scope of practice, and an indication of how vital paramedics could be to local communities, particularly in rural and remote areas. An expanded role may help address health workforce sustainability problems in areas where health care provision is challenged by geographical constraints and low workforce numbers. What is known about the topic? A broadening of paramedicine’s traditional scope of practice has been linked to improvements in health workforce sustainability problems in areas where health care provision is challenged by geographical constraints and low workforce numbers, such as rural and remote Australia. Health education, as well as health promotion, primary health care and chronic disease management, have been proposed as potential activities that paramedics could be well placed to participate in, contributing to the health and well-being of local communities. What does this paper add? This paper identifies and synthesises literature focusing on paramedic-initiated health education in the Australian context, assessing the current health education role of paramedics in metropolitan, rural and remote areas. It provides an understanding of different geographical areas that may benefit from expanded-scope prehospital practice, indicating that the involvement of paramedics in health education in Australia is significantly determined by their geographical place of work, reflecting the influence of the availability of healthcare resources on individual communities. What are the implications for practitioners? Today’s paramedics fill broader roles than those encompassed within traditional models of prehospital care. Rural and remote communities facing increasing difficulty in obtaining health service provision appear to benefit strongly from the presence of expanded-scope paramedics trained in health promotion, primary injury prevention, chronic disease management and health education: this should be a consideration for medical and allied health practitioners in these areas. Australian paramedics are uniquely placed to ‘fill the gaps’ left by shortages of healthcare professionals in rural and remote areas of the country.
