Due to the increasing demand for large-tonnage construction machinery, the manufacturers call for a reliable and inexpensive proportional control valve with large flow capacity. In this work, a novel throttle poppet valve based on hydraulic-feedback principle has been studied comprehensively and optimized to meet the requirements of the construction machinery. A detailed and precise mathematical model has been developed and validated through experiments. According to the model, basic status of the valve under different working conditions has been analyzed, and the impacts of the parameters on the performances of response speed and the pressure stiffness have been studied through the root locus method. To find the optimal parameters suitable for construction machinery, an optimization based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II was carried out, and the performances have been significantly improved. Finally, by adopting the analysis on the parameters and the optimization results, guidelines for designing the hydraulic-feedback proportional valve in various sizes are presented.

In this paper, we investigated the knowledge modeling and proposed an ontology-based descriptively-logic theory using fuzzy interval in order to support the management and re-usage of the knowledge of design. We also established the methods to classify and present the concept-design knowledge and developed an ontology-based model presenting the knowledge of design as well as a model for modeling cycles. We further applied these methods and models to develop a specific ontology-based design-knowledge model and At last the practicability and validity of these methods are validated in the management system of design knowledge for the construction machinery.

When assessing the quality of fruit and packaging process, fruit-producing farms owners decide to evaluate fruit by people or automated sorting lines. The purchase of an automated sorting line generates high costs for the company, but it brings benefits in the form of increased work efficiency, and the better organization of fruit packaging and storage processes. The use of that machinery and equipment is common in agricultural farms as well as in fruit and vegetable processing companies. Despite the widespread use of various types of fruit sorters, the analysis of the operation of the designed device and the study of its technological parameters is still a current research problem. During operation of the devices for sorting fruit there are many technical problems affecting technological processes and quality of fruits. In order to improve the efficiency of sorting fruit, this process should be quickly and accurately. The purpose of this paper is to present the automated apple sorter line construction design, and software for quality controlling fruits. Selected elements of the sorter structure including endurance calculation using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and fruit control system using image analysis were presented.

The energy storage system (ESS) is playing an important role in the hybrid system. Because of the high power density of the supercapacitor (SC) and the high energy density of the battery, the hybrid ESS with the two energy storing devices is widely used in the hybrid vehicles. But the research on the hybrid ESS in hybrid construction machinery is nearly blank. According to the characteristics of the hybrid ESS, the structure applied to the hybrid construction machinery is put forward, and the power converter DC-DC is designed and simulated, too. The simulation results prove that the bidirectional DC-DC can meet the requirement of the hybrid ESS.

Based on embeded technology a portable fault detection equipment for the construction machinery hydraulic system is developed. The equipment is mainly composed of embeded hardware platform and graphical-interface software platform. The hardware platform includes the core control unit ECM-945GSE industrial computer, 8-channel data acquisition module based on ARM chip, LCD screen, touch screen, power supply module with large-scale operation voltage and wide temperature range, PTT pressure transducers, the integration transducer of temperature, pressure, flow rate transducer as well as equipment chassis. The software system consists of data acquisition procedures, diagnosis, detection and output printing programs and drivers programs. The pilot trial in the armed forces shows that both detectors can be used in repair shop or indoor, but also in the field of construction machinery on-site emergency repair when rapid detection and diagnosis. And it has a strong adaptability.

Well-established operational practices have determined the evolution of RNLI lifeboats throughout their history. The RNLI's requirement/or an all-fast offshore fleet of the self-righting type by 1993, however, motivated the need to re-examine basic design parameters of boats and launching equipment. More recent requirements to improve lifeboat performance further have demanded even closer evaluation of design requirements of hull form, machinery installation and construction materials. This paper outlines the history of the development of RNLI craft and describes the procedures for the design and development of its newest classes of lifeboat (FAB 3 and FAB 4), for which extensive model testing of differing hull forms was evaluated, various types of machinery were reviewed and construction, although in composite materials, was carefully designed to accommodate high hydrodynamic and impact loads. Technical trials and operational evaluation procedures are also discussed.

U.S. shipyards are experiencing a lack of stock designs when compared with worldclass shipyards. Shipyards in this country usually develop "unique designs" from scratch. New designs are traditionally performed by design agents, who do not account sufficiently for production requirements and constraints. This process typically results in excessive production re-engineering and/or rework. This paper presents a production-based methodology that is being developed under the National Shipbuilding Research Program/American Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP/ASE) Project 21, Develop and Implement World-Class U.S. Material Standards and Parametric Design Rules to Support Commercial and Naval Auxiliary Ship Construction. This methodology utilizes a zonal design approach that leverages work previously accomplished under the Shipbuilding Technology contract between Designers & Planners, Inc., and the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Development Center in the 1994–1998 time frame. Under this contract, a collocated team with representatives of domestic and foreign shipbuilders, ship owners, vendors, and designers developed world-class engine rooms. Results of this previously conducted research were summarily reported in the Maritime Reporter. The advanced design methodology presented in this paper incorporates production requirements early in the design process that can result in significant savings in design cost and schedule, production costs, and construction cycle time. The methodology addresses how (1) machinery equipment should be grouped into functional volumes and blocks; (2) the interfaces between functional volumes and blocks and between zones should be considered; (3) producibility issues should be considered early in the design process; (4) the information should be collected and archived for use in future designs. An example is provided to show how this advanced methodology could be used to shorten design time and cost and enhance the producibility of future shipboard machinery spaces.

SUMMARYThe issue of the operation method for dual-arm rescue construction machinery is investigated in this paper. To increase its operational efficiency and to save more time at rescue sites, some operating strategies of the human arm are employed to design a novel operation method for construction machinery. On the basis of that, a novel and anthropomorphic task-motion planning and performing framework for rescue construction machinery is established. Firstly, the main tasks construction machinery encounter are summarized, and then, these tasks are decomposed to several manipulation and movement sequences. Finally, several frequently used movements, which consist of some basic movement elements, are designed to be intuitive movement primitives coordinating related movement elements simultaneously to improve the operational efficiency, which forms a novel operation method for rescue construction machinery. Additionally, in order to avoid the potential collision between the dual arms, a self-collision avoidance surveillance method is proposed to guarantee the safety of the novel operation method. An application case is presented to introduce the proposed method specifically, and a typical simulation of a dual-arm grip-and-cut task is carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework.

In this paper, a complicated resistance muffler was designed for a construction machinery. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method with three dimension models was used to explore the aerodynamic performance of the muffler. With this method the pressure distribution in the muffler is simulated and the pressure loss is predicted for the structure modification. The experiment results verify that the assembly performance of the muffler modified is better than the original muffler. The pressure loss and the insert loss of the improved muffler meet the design specifications and standards of the construction machinary. The integrated performance of the construction machinery has been advanced.

Background: Agricultural machinery equipment is the core element of advanced agricultural productivity. The operation system of agricultural machinery equipment involves machine-human-environment-society interactions. Limited by the production mode, operation mode, etc., the design and development, manufacturing, operation and maintenance control, recycling and other links of agricultural machinery equipment are still independent of each other. The massive information in the agricultural production process has not been fully utilized, so there are some outstanding problems such as low operating performance, low production efficiency, and poor integration of agricultural machinery and agronomy. Methods: Focusing on the agricultural production process, this paper proposes the construction method for a high-horsepower tractor digital twin, and expounds on its operation mechanism. Taking high-horsepower tractor ploughing operation as an example, by deploying tractors, central servers, and an Internet of Things (IoT) platform, we developed a digital twin service platform for the agricultural production system of intelligent agricultural machinery equipment and built a tractor digital twin to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results: The accuracy rate of the tractor ploughing quality prediction service based on this platform is 96.65%. Under open-loop control, the number of excellent, good, medium and poor sets of the tractor ploughing quality are 153, 955, 1470, and 1422, respectively. After adopting closed-loop control, the number of excellent and good sets increased by 378, and 821, respectively, and the number of medium and poor groups decreases by 119 and 1080, respectively. Through this platform, the operation quality can be effectively and accurately predicted and improved, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed construction method of high-horsepower tractor digital twin. Conclusions: This research provides a method framework for the construction of the digital twin of tractor operation and maintenance control processes, and provides strong support for the vigorous development of intelligent agriculture.

Many construction processes are carried out by machines working together and forming technological systems, eg earthmoving machinery made up of excavators and haulers (trucks). Productivity (W(N) ) is a key to valuate the process design purposes. The paper presents the results obtained by applying artificial neural networks to predict productivity (W(N),S ) for earthmoving machinery systems, consisting of c excavators and N haulers. Experimentally determined productivity values can form a standard basis for designing construction earthworks. Possessing the data set consisting of the technical parameters of earthmoving machinery systems and the corresponding productivities for different output hauling distances, one can train artificial neural networks and use subsequently for the reliable prediction of W(N),S .

Work purpose: the investigation of transport process safety in construction industry of the Bryansk region, the substantiation of reasons, factors and circumstances of accidents in the construction companies of the region, the substantiation of the impact of hydraulic drive unit failures upon safety of transport construction machinery with the hydraulic drive with the purpose of driver safety. Investigation problem: on the basis of the obtained results of the safety investigations of transport processes, reasons defined, revealed injury factors of drivers during the operation of the load flat car hydraulic drive of transport means to develop motion parameters of the “hydraulic drive-load flat car” system which will not allow arising oscillations of the system resulting in hydraulic drive failure arising which has influence upon driver’s work safety. The investigations were carried out on the basis of a system analysis of accident examinations in the regional construction industry which on the basis of statistical data allows the defining safety state of transport construction machinery. By means of investigations it is defined that 90% of transport construction machines are equipped with a hydraulic drive. In the hydraulic drive the most significant element is a hydraulic cylinder – the most loaded element performing all basic operations of a working process of loading and unloading. In the hydraulic drive there is used a telescopic hydraulic cylinder in which during operation there are revealed design-production defects (DPD) which result in injury of machine service personnel. One of DPD manifestations is oscillation formation in the hydraulic drive which results in the destruction of hydraulic cylinder attachment fitting. It is defined that the support of hydraulic drive reliability and safety is a difficult problem which needs a complex solution still at designing and creation, and during the operation. The complexity of the problem causes the necessity of design and operation parameter optimization, in the first place, that of an executing hydraulic cylinder of the hydraulic drive with the use of mathematical modeling. The review of the mathematical modeling methods of hydraulic cylinder parameters allows drawing the conclusion that the existing methods have many assumptions and do not allow creating completely reliable and safe transport construction engineering. The investigation novelty consists in the offered procedure for the solution of motion equations of the “hydraulic drive – load flat car” system which allows calculating the motion system parameters, defining the development of system oscillation above critical able to destruct a fitting unit of the hydraulic cylinder to the load flat car. Conclusion. The algorithm offered for the solution of mathematical equations allows making a conclusion on the stability and safety of the “hydraulic cylinder – load flat car” system, finding optimum values of motion parameters at any time moment of a transitional process.

From autonomous vehicles to robotics and machinery, organizations are developing autonomous transportation systems in various domains. Strategic incentives point towards a fourth industrial revolution of cyber–physical systems with higher levels of automation and connectivity throughout the Internet of Things (IoT) that interact with the physical world. In the construction and mining sectors, these developments are still at their infancy, and practitioners are interested in autonomous solutions to enhance efficiency and reliability. This paper illustrates the enhanced design of a driverless bulldozer prototype using IoT-based solutions for the remote control and navigation tracking of the mobile machinery. We illustrate the integration of a cloud application, communication protocols and a wireless communication network to control a small-scale bulldozer from a remote workstation. Furthermore, we explain a new tracking functionality of work completion using maps and georeferenced indicators available via a user interface. Finally, we provide a preliminary safety and security risk assessment of the system prototype and propose guidance for application in real-scale machinery.

During the past ten years, both U.S. and foreign shipyards have developed advanced unitization concepts that include multi-level assemblies representing large vertical segments of ship machinery spaces. This paper describes a parametrically derived family of large, fully integrated standard machinery units that are applicable over a range of ship types and installed horsepower. The results include a hierarchy of standard units, the selection of standard unit sizes and interfaces, the development of parametric standards for system design, engine room arrangement and structural design, and machinery unit structural and outfitting design. Benchmarking is reported with respect to Japanese and European shipbuilding practices, and with respect to U.S. land based industrial plant design and construction practices. The proposed unitization concept is demonstrated in a ship-specific engine room arrangement design effort. A business assessment for this unitization concept is presented which addresses its potential shipbuilding cost and schedule impacts as evaluated by three U.S. shipyards.

Recently, the design of mechanical networks with protein-inspired responses has become increasingly popular. Here, we review contributions which were motivated by studies of protein dynamics employing coarse-grained elastic network models. First, the concept of evolutionary optimization that we developed to design network structures which execute prescribed tasks is explained. We then review what presumably marks the origin of the idea to design complex functional networks which encode protein-inspired behavior, namely the design of an elastic network structure which emulates the cycles of ATP-powered conformational motion in protein machines. Two recent applications are reviewed. First, the construction of a model molecular motor, whose operation incorporates both the tight coupling power stroke as well as the loose coupling Brownian ratchet mechanism, is discussed. Second, the evolutionary design of network structures which encode optimal long-range communication between remote sites and represent mechanical models of allosteric proteins is presented. We discuss the prospects of designed protein-mimicking elastic networks as model systems to elucidate the design principles and functional signatures underlying the operation of complex protein machinery.

With the increasing awareness of the importance of environmental protection and the fierce competition in the construction machinery market, improving the vibration comfort of a whole construction machine has become a new focus of competition; therefore, optimizing the performance of cab mounts has become an urgent problem to be solved. At present, the problems of low modeling efficiency, serious technical difficulties, and long development cycles exist in the design and optimization of cab mounts. In this paper, a multi-target regression forests method is introduced into the design and optimization of the construction machinery installation system, which circumvents the traditional complex modeling process and establishes a mapping relationship between cab assembly parameters and the mounts’ stiffness, as well as introduces the system decoupling rate and vibration isolation rate as the boundary conditions. Furthermore, the MRFs method is compared and evaluated with MLRP and Multi-SVR prediction results. Finally, a complete, accurate, and efficient design method for the cab mount system optimization is developed, improving the decoupling rate and vibration isolation rate of the cab system. This design method can predict the stiffness of the mounts in multiple directions.

In order to improve the vibration isolation performance of cab seat and ride comfort of the driver, a seat suspension structure of construction machinery cab is proposed based on negative stiffness structure (NSS) in this paper. The influences of different parameters of suspension system on dynamic stiffness are analyzed. The configuration parameter range of suspension system is obtained. Then, the nonlinear dynamic equation of the seat suspension system is established and the NSS optimization model is proposed. The vibration transmissibility characteristics of suspension structure are analyzed by different methods. The results show that the displacement and acceleration amplitude of optimized seat suspension system are obviously reduced, and the VDV and RMS in the vertical vibration direction for the seat are respectively decreased by 87% and 86%. The vibration transmissibility rate SEAT and the Ttrans are both decreased. Moreover, the peak frequencies of the vibration transmitted to the driver are not near the key frequency values which are easy to cause human discomfort. It indicates that the design of seat suspension system has no effect on the health condition of the driver after being vibrated. The advantages of vibration isolation performance of the designed NSS suspension system are demonstrated, improving the driver’s ride comfort and the working environment.

The fuel production machinery from used tire waste, is a device that works by utilizing the concept of pyrolysis. In the engine reactor, used tires made from polystyrene, which is a long chain hydrocarbon, will experience a cracking process into shorter chain hydrocarbons. The steam from the heating will then be distilled into the reactor. This fuel production machine from used tire waste can be a solution for alternative sources of liquid fuel energy production, in this case sourced from waste tires which are increasingly worrying. For this reason, with this oil processing machine, it is hoped that it will reduce the impact caused by this used tire waste. and besides that it can make a useful fuel.

It is evident from the experience of operating the construction machinery (excavators, bulldozers, loaders etc.) that quite often the machinery and its operators are working under severe conditions. Working under threat of rock fall, on unstable or contaminated grounds, or debris handling tends to increase the impact of adverse occupational environment on the operators’ health. When the operators are at risk, it is advisable to deploy remote process control technologies on the work sites. This is what brings research and development of modern remote control systems to the top of the chart in order to improve the productivity of machinery, enhance the safety and quality of the jobs carried out. The use of remote control will exclude the adverse impact of aggressive environment during the process operations. The research allowed to establish that the design specifics of the construction and road-making machines enable them to go far beyond the standard process layout giving into a much wider range of application, up to aggressive environments. A crawler excavator model was devised, imitating the visibility range of the process areas for the manual and remote control systems. Implementation of remote control for construction and road-making machines may become a step towards a completely new level of interaction within the man-machine-environment system.

The article presents how three scaled down industrial machinery models were designed and built as an educational tool to present the transport of particulate material. The literature review showed calculation models for equipment at industrial level, not for laboratory level. There were chosen the most representative means of commercial transport for particulate materials: a conveyor screw, a conveyor belt and a bucket elevator. These three machines were calculated and built in polycarbonate to allow visualization of their internal functioning. The three devices are controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) and connected to each other by a SCADA network. The equipment is modular so as not to alter the order of operation, being able to obtain different work sequences. In addition, a man-machine graphic interface (HMI) was developed to supervise and to control the designed equipment. The results of particulate material mass flow obtained are approximately coincident with those estimated, validating the use of calculation models for much lower levels of work. Finally, it is emphasized that the system obtained is an environment for students to implement control techniques using the sensors and motors used in the designs.

Based on the mechanical low cost construction of single-phase motor the paper presents electronic drive concepts to improve the performance and for special applications also the lifetime of brushless motors. The tangential and radial forces acting on the rotor are controlled by special phase current curves to reduce the torque ripple and to avoid expendable machinery parts like ball or sliding bearings.
