La génomique comparative bactérienne consiste à comparer les contenus en gène des différentes souches : leur pangenome. Avec le nombre croissant de séquençages, les logiciels existants au début de cette thèse arrivaient à leurs limites en termes de temps de calcul et de mémoire. L’enjeu était de passer à l’échelle de milliers de génomes dans un temps raisonnable, en gardant une précision correcte. De plus, à notre connaissance, aucun logiciel ne permettait d’effectuer toutes les étapes clés d’une étude de génomique comparative. C’est dans ce contexte que nous avons développé PanACoTA, un outil ayant pour but de standardiser et automatiser la préparation de données pour ces études, depuis le téléchargement des génomes et leur contrôle qualité jusqu’à l’inférence de l’arbre phylogénétique du core génome (gènes communs à tous les génomes). Son implémentation sous forme de modules a été pensée pour permettre de s’adapter aux besoins spécifiques de certaines études (exploration de paramètres, étapes supplémentaires). Concernant le module « pangenome », nous avons développé une nouvelle méthode, s’appuyant sur des outils récents de comparaison et clustering de séquences. Robuste aux changements d’échelle, elle permet de calculer un pangénome de 4000 souches en 30 minutes. Au cours de son développement, nous avons appliqué PanACoTA dans différents contextes. Nous avons montré l’utilité de l’outil sur des études à court terme (recherche de la particularité d’une souche épidémique d’E. anophelis), sur du long terme (étude de la diversité génomique de l’espèce E. coli), ou encore pour différencier différentes espèces d’un genre peu connu (Morganella)Bacterial comparative genomics consists in comparing the gene contents of different strains: their pangenome. With the increasing number of strains sequenced, the tools available when I started this PhD were reaching their limits in terms of computation time and space. The aim was to develop a method able to handle thousands of genomes, accurately and in a reasonable amount of time. Besides, to our knowledge, no tool was able to do all key steps of any comparative genomics study. This spurred the development of PanACoTA, a tool to standardize and automatize the process to build the key collections of data needed for these studies. This includes all steps from downloading genomes with a quality control until the inference of a phylogenetic tree based on the core genome (genes shared by all strains). In order to be able to adapt to specific needs (exploration of parameters, additional steps), we implemented it in a modular way. For the “pangenome” module, we developed a new method, based on recent tools of genome comparison and clustering. Robust to changes in sampling size, this method can infer a pangenome of 4000 strains in 30 minutes. During its development, we applied PanACoTA to different kinds of studies. We showed its usefulness for short-term studies (find specificity of a pathogenic strain of E. anophelis), long-term (genomic diversity of E. coli species), or to identify different species in an little-known genus (Morganella)

Thesis (PhD (Chemistry and Polymer Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.In this thesis the main capillary electrodriven chromatographic techniques (i.e. Capillary Electrochromatography CEC, Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography MEKC and Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography MEEKC) were compared in terms of column manufacturing, fundamental chromatographic performance, and some applications were developed. The first stage of this thesis aimed at developing improved packed and open tubular CEC columns. For the manufacturing of packed CEC columns, the frit-burning step proved of critical importance, together with the slow build-up of the packed bed. The making of open tubular columns is a relatively simple, "one pot" sol-gel reaction taking place in mild conditions. The nature of the gel and the resulting selectivity of the column could easily be changed by changing the precursors. In a second stage of this thesis the packed and open tubular CEC columns were evaluated chromatographically and compared with the results obtained by MEKC and MEEKC. All electrodriven separation techniques showed high efficiencies. The selectivity proved easier to tune with sol-gel chemistry for the making of open tubular columns. Resolution is acceptable for packed CEC, MEKC and MEEKC. For peak capacity, CEC has the advantage of a practically non-limited elution time, while MEKC and MEEKC suffer of the drawback of the existence of an elution window which is limited in time by the elution of the micelles. Some applications were developed in this study on open tubular CEC columns and for the packed CEC columns. Various sugars derivatized with 9- aminopyrene-1,4,6-trisulfonic acid (APTS) could be separated with open tubular CEC, using an octyl, amino or cyano stationary phase. Open tubular columns containing α, β and γ cyclodextrins attached to the stationary phase were developed. This approach proved promising for the separation of positional isomers. A method was developed for the analyses of a mixture of carbamates and for several steroids with packed column CEC directly coupled with MS.

Resource demand and environmental degradation have reached unsustainable levels. A sustainable future requires industrial systems’ attention and improvement. Industrial ecology springs from interests to integrate the notions of sustainability into environmental and economic systems (Allenby 1992). The fact is that the economy operates as an open system, drawing raw materials from the environment and returning vast amounts of unused by-products in the form of pollution and waste. The products that firms market are only a small portion of what their processes turn out; a significant portion of their output eventually leaves the economy as waste and returns to the environment in forms that may stress it unacceptably. (Ehrenfeld & Gertler, 1997). Increased economic output will still cause increased environmental harm. Thus, accomplishing economic growth and environmental protection simultaneously requires fundamentally new ways of examining and designing socioeconomic systems. Published ArticleThe pre-1994 education system created huge imbalances among public schools in South Africa, in terms of resource allocation. Surprisingly, the pronouncement by the Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, to declare some schools "no-fee schools", generated a mixed-bag of reactions within the entire education fraternity, "No-fee schools spark row" (Govender, 2006:6). Some sections are giving this decision their full support, while others are arguing that "new regulations will lead to standards dropping" (Govender & Makwabe 2007:4). Notwithstanding these contrasting views, an overwhelming majority (78%) of the school principals expressed satisfaction with this decision. This article, therefore, intends to explore the possible impact of this decision on the school's overall performance as perceived by principals of South African public schools.

Chapter 11 of the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000 (Qld) and the Retail Shop Leases Act 1994 (Qld) both introduce procedural requirements to the process for creation of land contracts and were both introduced to address a perceived lack of conscience in each of the industries affected. These represent a recent broadening of the ambit of consumer protection legislation in Queensland which deviates from more traditional methods of statutory intervention into land contracts. This paper focuses on the extent to which the Acts effectively introducing a conscience element into certain land contracts, and the extent to which this alters classical contract law. The effectiveness of the approach is then tested against the critiques of two alternative theories of law - law and economics and feminist contract theory - to see whether the legislative approach answers the deficiencies in contract identified within the terms of each theory.

The Identity of the Ten Panacas in Incaic CuzcoOne notion well-known in the modern literature on the Incas, which was first introduced by Sarmiento de Gamboa, in 1572, is that the ten panacas of Cuzco were formed in a historical process, with each king founding his own panaca. However, earlier chroniclers, such as Betanzos, Santo Tomás and Las Casas, described the formation of the ten panacas very differently. For the latter authors, the totality of the ten panacas always constituted the central part of Cuzco’s organization. Beyond their significance as lineage groupings, the panacas represented a hierarchical organization in which other social functions, like age grades and age classes, the calendar and religion, also played indispensable roles.En la literatura moderna acerca de los incas se conoce más la noción, introducida por Sarmiento en 1572, de que las 10 panacas del Cuzco se habrían formado a lo largo de un proceso histórico en el que cada rey fundó su propia panaca. Cronistas anteriores, como Betanzos, Santo Tomás y Las Casas describieron la formación de las 10 panacas de manera muy distinta y estas habrían constituido la parte central de la organización del Cuzco. In 2011 author Robert Neuwirth identified the global informal sector economy as having a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that is equivalent to the second largest economy in the world behind the United States of America (USA).Studies have shown that the informal sector economy is prevalent in Africa and India which are both considered to be emerging market economies with potential for exponential growth. The GDP of a country is calculated using a total of a countries production of goods and services; however production in the informal sector economy is unaccounted for. The inclusion of their production could potentially boost the economic growth of these emerging market economies.This study aims to observe whether the informal sector economy should be formalized or left as it is in its current state. Despite the ‘problem statement’ in the previous paragraph, which appears to be in favour of formalization, there are advantages and disadvantages for both formalizing the informal sector economy and leaving it in its current state.The objective of this study is to come up with a sustainable strategy of how to manage and administer the informal sector economy as in its current state it is proving to be unsustainable.A two phased approach was used to produce the findings which included interviews with experts and interviews with entrepreneurs operating in the informal sector economy.These findings provided suitable recommendations to be made as to how to manage and administer the informal sector economy.Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012.

About 2,500 specimens of small mammal fossils were collected from 10 localities in the Pliocene Panaca Formation in Meadow Valley, southeast Nevada. The most common taxa are cricetid and heteromyid rodents, and lagomorphs. Twenty-seven species, including five new species, were recognized from the fauna. A new genus of microtine rodent, Nevadomys, including three new species, N. fejfari, N. lindsayi, and N. downsi, is recognized. Nevadomys was probably derived from the Hemphillian Paramicrotoscoptes. Repomys minor n. sp. is another new species of high-crowned cricetid that was detected in the Panaca local fauna. With abundant upper and lower third molars of Repomys, it was possible to amend the diagnoses of genus Repomys. The fifth new species recognized from the fauna is a shrew, Paranotiosorex panacaensis n. gen. and sp. Enamel microstructure of molars of the microtine rodents Mimomys panacaensis and Nevadomys n. gen. from the fauna were examined under the scanning electronic microscope. Mimomys panacaensis shows the same schmelzmuster among different populations. Nevadomys has a more primitive schmelzmuster compared to Mimomys panacaensis. Both its leading and trailing edges are entirely composed of radial enamel. The assemblage of small mammal fossils suggests that the Panaca local fauna represents the early Blancan land mammal age. The first appearance datum of Mimomys panacaensis is suggested as the beginning of Blancan land mammal age, and the absolute age of the lowest stratigraphic datum of M. panacaensis in the Panaca Formation is interpolated from magnetostratigraphy and is considered as the age of the Hemphillian-Blancan boundary. The magnetostratigraphy of the Panaca Formation in Meadow Valley is established based on four sections in the basin. The ash in the Rodent Hill section was dated at 4.64 +/- 0.03 Ma, which constrains the correlation of the reversed polarity magnetozone in the Rodent Hill section to the C3n.2r in the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS). The other three sections are correlated to the Rodent Hill section based on the ashes. The Panaca Formation in Meadow Valley was deposited from 4.50--5.30 Ma, and the Hemphillian-Blancan boundary is around 4.95 Ma, close to the termination of Thvera Subchron in the GPTS.

Does the creation of a deemed servant-master relationship, between pilot and ship-owner or master through section 76 (2) of the National Ports Act (hereafter the NPA); accurately reflect the de facto relationship in which the parties stand? Can the provision's importation of the doctrine of vicarious liability and consequent foisting of liability on the ship-owner be defined as logical, just and practical? It will be argued after having had recourse to the manner in which these roles have come to be defined and understood in South African labour jurisprudence, the governing law, respective positions occupied by ship-owner and port authority, broad-based considerations of policy, and key tenets of the rationale underpinning the concept of vicarious liability; that the answer to the above-raised questions is are sounding no. In addition, the writer will submit that the privatisation of pilotage services presents a solution, alternate to the irrational imposition of the doctrine of vicarious liability, which is palatable to government, ship-owning interests and pilot. a) Introduction Typically, claims arising from consequences of pilot error satisfy the definition of a 'maritime claim' contained in s 1 (1) (e) and s 1 (1) (l) of the Admiralty Jurisdiction Regulation Act. As a result thereof; a South African court sitting in admiralty has jurisdiction to hear such claims. As to the identification of the appropriate law; s 6 (2) dictates that South African statute, if relevant, trumps pre-existing English admiralty law and is the law to be applied. The NPA, chiefly through sections 75 and 76, regulates the extent of the pilot's liability for his/her acts or omissions whilst a vessel is under compulsory pilotage. Thus, the Act is applicable to disputes arising from pilot error, before a South African court sitting in admiralty.

Esta dissertação se inscreve no campo das artes cênicas, debruçando-se sobre o trabalho do ator por meio da análise de Partituras de Ações, aqui consideradas como dispositivo de criação e composição. A pesquisa descreve e analisa um processo no qual a pesquisadora está inserida como atriz, portanto, não se faz de maneira distanciada e impessoal, embora mantenha o rigor acadêmico necessário à sua realização. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo de caso, tomando o espetáculo Dorotéia do grupo Panacéia Delirante sob direção de Hebe Alves, obra que tem como um de seus pilares o desempenho cênico das atrizes por intermédio desse dispositivo. Duas unidades de análise foram utilizadas visando demonstrar como o dispositivo Partitura age no desempenho das atrizes no espetáculo: a Corporalidade posta em evidência no espetáculo e o Estado de Jogo que se estabelece entre as atrizes em cena. Além disso, foram analisados registros em fotografia e vídeo do espetáculo, bem como depoimentos concedidos pelo elenco de Dorotéia. Entrecruzando esse material com aspectos conceituais da pesquisa, pretendeu-se chegar a respostas para as perguntas Como o jogo e a corporalidade servem à estruturação da partitura entendida como um dispositivo? e De que maneira esses dois elementos são articulados na composição de desempenho das atrizes?. O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar o espetáculo sob a lente do dispositivo – com suas linhas de força e curvas de visibilidade, tal como apresentado por Michel Foucault e desenvolvido por Gilles Deleuze. Este esforço se justifica na medida em que uma compreensão não-cartesiana, rizomática e que, portanto, evita a rigidez de conceitos preestabelecidos é importante ferramenta para compreender a práxis do artista, no caso, o artista cênico. Desse modo, torna-se possível abrir novas leituras que incluam os aspectos de risco, improvisação, tensão, prazer, interatividade, imaginação e subjetividade, sem cair em formulações baseadas apenas no senso comum ou amparadas numa concepção de partitura entendida como puramente instrumental. Dentre os resultados alcançados destacam-se a compreensão da corporalidade e do estado de jogo como curvas de visibilidade e linhas de força do dispositivo, responsáveis por possibilitar a ação dos processos de sobredeterminação funcional e preenchimento estratégico que ocorrem na partitura; e o entendimento de que, por meio da ótica do dispositivo, a partitura pode ser discutida de maneira mais rigorosa e sistematizada em estudos sobre o desempenho do artista cênico.
This work falls within the field of performing arts, leaning over the actor's work by analyzing Action Scores, considered here as a device for creation and composition. The research describes and analyzes a process in which the researcher is insertedas an actress. Therefore, it is not a distanced and unbiased one, but still maintains the necessary academic rigour for their production. To this end, we conducted a case study, using the play Dorotéia, by the Panacéia Delirante group, under the direction of Hebe Alves, a work that has, as one of its pillars, the scenic performance of the actresses through this device. Two analysis units were used in order to demonstrate how the Score device works regarding the performance of the actresses in the show: the Corporality evidenced in the show, and the Game State established between the actresses on scene. In addition, we analyzed the play’s photo and video recordings, as well as testimonies given by the cast of Dorotéia. By combining this material with the research’s conceptual aspects, we intended to answer the questions: How do the game and corporality serve to structure the Score as a device? and How are these two elements articulated in the composition of the actresses’ performance?. The objective of the research was to analyze the performance under the scope of the device – with its lines of powerand curves of visibility, as presented by Michel Foucault and developed by Gilles Deleuze. This effort is so far justified as a non-Cartesian, rhizomatic understanding – that therefore escapes the rigidity of pre-established concepts. Such is an important tool for understanding the artist's (in this case, the scenic artist’s) praxis. Thus, it becomes possible to open new interpretations to include the aspects of risk, improvisation, tension, pleasure, interactivity, imagination and subjectivity without falling into formulations solely based on common sense or supported by a concept of an Action Score understood as purely instrumental. Among the achieved results, the understanding of corporality and the game state as visibility curves and power lines of the device stand out. They are responsible for possibilitating the action of the processes of functional overdetermination and strategic filling that occur in the Action Score. Another conclusion that can be taken from this case study is the understanding that, through the optical device, the Action Score can be discussed in a more rigorous and systematized method regarding the scenic artist’s performance.

Previous issue date: 2013-08-08A pesquisa aqui desenvolvida tem por objetivo analisar os discursos teórico-conceituais pró e contra a economia solidária no que se refere à sua função na lógica de acumulação e reprodução do capital. Mediante consulta a literatura referente à economia solidária produzida no Brasil a partir de meados da década de 1990, observamos a existência de duas linhas interpretativas majoritárias: uma que enaltece e outra que critica o projeto em questão. Demonstramos que os autores que defendem a economia solidária argumentam que ela não é funcional à acumulação de capital e é até emancipatória, reproduzindo um tipo de discurso já evidenciado entre os socialistas utópicos de princípios do século XIX, pautado em traços idealistas e mesmo num materialismo vulgar. Enquanto os pensadores críticos à economia solidária, pautados em uma análise marxista rigorosa, entendem que ela não faz mais do que compor as estratégias de acumulação do capital e, da forma como tem sido aplicada, é estéril como alternativa anti-sistêmica.

Africa is rich with plentiful mineral resources, yet it is a continent associated with underdevelopment, low economic growth and unskilled labour. Arguments abound that if developing countries added more value to their commodities locally, rather than exporting them to other countries in a raw and unprocessed format, their key economic indicators, such as employment and economic growth, would be enhanced. This study explored debates by scholars and policymakers, who either support or are against the position that mineral beneficiation is a panacea to Africa’s economic challenges. The study explored arguments by scholars and policymakers as to why African countries fail to pursue mineral beneficiation which has subsequently relegated their economies to the bottom end of economic development. The research explored how International Relations (IR) scholars in the past tried to define development. These debates on development were explored using the theoretical frameworks of modernisation and dependency. The study found that these debates, have highlighted the important role which mineral resources play in international relations. Diplomacy and foreign policy were found to be key aspects in the debates on mineral beneficiation in the continent.
The study employed a qualitative research approach to explore arguments by scholars and policymakers on whether the continent should beneficiate its mineral resources. Data was collected, analysed and categorised. The findings of the research were discussed based on the themes which emerged from the literature reviewed.
The study focused on whether by beneficiating minerals locally, the continent could realise sustainable economic growth for its citizens. The study explored whether debates by scholars, mining industry and government policymakers could dispel or support the argument that mineral beneficiation is a panacea for sustainable economic growth and skills development in the continent. The study found that debates on whether African governments should beneficiate their abundant mineral resources will continue to evolve and develop.

and the problems of women have mainly been considered in terms of bringing women into the public sphere. This document examines the situation of women in the Turkish labor market, to see to what extent education helps women exceed their roles of the conventional sexual division of labor in the labor market. The limits of the effect of higher educational degree on the improvement of women&rsquo
s position within the market mechanism are discussed. We found that despite its importance, education on its own is inadequate to secure gender equality in both private and public sphere.

Promovido principalmente pela elite intelectual da época onde se destacam nomes como Guerra Junqueiro, Oliveira Martins, Antero de Quental, Eça de Queiróz, entre outros contou ainda, com a participação ativa de jornalistas, estudantes, artistas, professores, e resultou num dos momentos mais importantes da história cultural de Portugal, ou seja, o movimento anti-clerical e anti-institucional, promovido pelos membros da chamada Geração Nova de 1870. Pagamento de indulgências, privilégios, confissão, dogmas, celibato; termos exclusivos da Igreja e que acabam sendo atacados pelos críticos. Reforçado pela intensidade das palavras impressas em jornais, romances e periódicos da época e no número elevado de fatos e acontecimentos que estimulavam os discursos, o convulcionismo entre a Igreja Católica e aqueles que formulavam crítica direta a sua ritualística e seu poderio institucional acabou por constituir um dos pontos nodais, onde mais se concentraram as contradições do espaço social e ideológico de Portugal no século XIX.This research aims to analyze the main aspects of the debate between the Catholic Church and its critics in the last decades of the nineteenth century in Portugal. Promoted mainly by the intellectual elite of the time where we highlight names such as Guerra Junqueiro, Oliveira Martins, Antero de Quental, Eça de Queiróz, among others also featured, with the active participation of journalists, students, artists, teachers, and resulted in one of the most important moments in the cultural history of Portugal, ie, the movimento anti-clerical and anti-institutional, promoted by the members of the "New Generation 1870". Payment of indulgences, privileges, confession, dogmas, celibacy; unique terms of the Church and that end up being attacked by critics. Reinforced by the intensity of the words printed in newspapers, novels and periodicals of the time and the large number of facts and events which stimulated the speeches, the convulcionismo between the Catholic Church and those that formulated direct criticism of the ritualistic and its institutional power turned out to be one of the nodal points, where more were concentrated the contradictions of the social and ideological space of Portugal in the nineteenth century.

The contemporary global politics is dominated by climate change agenda. The subsequent climate change conferences have recognized the role of forests conceptualized as REDD+ as one of the cheapest and quickest way to reduce the carbon emissions. However, what is less understood is that to what extent carbon trade in the context of REDD+ mechanism is beneficial to local forest dependent communities. In the context of REDD+ pilot project which is implemented in Nepal since 2010, the extent of benefits of carbon trade to the local community was examined taking two case studies into account representing both Hill and Terai region which lies in lower temperate and tropical ecological regions respectively. The overall objective of this study is to examine whether the existing REDD+ mechanism implemented in Nepal is beneficial to the local community or not. A Household survey of total 70 households using systematic random sampling technique was administered to gather data related to the involvement of community forests users in taking benefits from, and cost to them incurred in forestry and carbon management activities, their personal characteristics, and people perception on climate change and its effects on livelihoods. Also, the carbon data was obtained from ongoing REDD+ project implemented in Nepal. With setting three scenarios 1) business as usual (no carbon trade), 2) with carbon trade plus scenario 1, and 3) only carbon trade, the analysis was performed with employing bivariate and multivariate statistical test, and regression analysis. Analysis on whether carbon trade is beneficial to the local community forest user groups suggests that carbon trading will offer good incentive under certain conditions as mentioned in scenario 2. The first condition is that there should be no restriction on using forests products which are the reliable basis for earning subsistence livelihoods to the local community. The second condition is that the community should able to sell carbon at least at $ 10 per ton CO2. It is also evident from the study that benefits from community forests outstrip the benefits from carbon trading, so carbon trading is only additional value to local community.

This thesis is concerned with how a controversial heritage redevelopment project in downtown Buenos Aires enables social actors to produce and contest meanings of culture, the city and the nation. The research is an in-depth case study of the politics of a culture-led urban regeneration project converting the Palacio de Correos y Telecommunicaciones (the post office national headquarters)into a cultural quarter in the context of Argentina's bicentenary commemorations. Taking the building as the object of study, the investigation draws on interviews, archival research and analysis of discourses and images to shed light on the material institutional and historical configurations of cultural planning from a sociological cultural perspective. The aim is to explore the complex interplay between culture, memory and space through three analytical dimensions concerning the rise, fall and rebirth of the building. First, the thesis considers why culture provides a solution to the deterioration and disuse of the postal place. Second, the politics of memory of the cultural centre is examined through its engagement with the past, present and future of the building. Third, the type of urban space imagined for the renovated site is discussed in relation to similar projects in the city's central area. The multifaceted analysis shows how the post office headquarters becomes entangled in a network of public discourses, memory struggles, material interests and political confrontations, mediated by the language of culture. The thesis argues that policy-makers invoke culture as a claim to legitimacy that is meant to appeal to those reject political parties and politicians and that us aimed at wiping out the conflicting social histories of places. The variety of meanings assigned to culture reasserts the contention over the term and demands empirical analyses that, grounded in specific contexts, resist the prevalence of universal cultural regeneration recipes, challenging culture's function as panacea.

The 2008 global financial crisis has been estimated to have resulted in losses of $4.3 trillion dollars to global banking institutions (Castells et al. 2012). The crisis placed the spotlight on banking culture (Moore 2012, 2013; Peston; 2013; Smith 2012; Salz 2013 Spicer et al. 2014; Deloitte 2013; CIPD 2013;) with claims that the causes of the crisis transpired from the ‘very heart of its [banking industry’s] culture’ (FT.com 2014). In the aftermath banks have attempted to introduce cultural change programs to encourage the right behaviours and conduct in an attempt to reduce wrongdoing and misbehaviour. This thesis critically explores mainstream perspectives of organisational culture (Peter and Waterman 1982; Deal and Kennedy 1982) in the context of the banking industry. Mainstream perspectives on culture were encapsulated by the idea that culture can be shaped and modified by management to produce a ‘strong culture’, which would in turn increase commitment, productivity and profitability (Wiener 1988; Parker 2000; Kilmann 1985; Du Gay 1996). Thirty years on since cultural engineering’s initial introduction, practitioners and industry ‘experts’ continue to buy into the virtues of strong culture management, portraying it as a panacea to the banking industry’s problems (PwC 2016; Salz 2013; CIPD 2013). Therefore, this thesis aims to revisit the topic of organisational culture in order to look at how the banking industry has approached culture management post-crisis. This thesis will draw on Foucault’s work on power, discipline and discourse (1977; 1978; 1980) to provide a framework that allows for an exploration into the complexity and ambiguity of culture, arguing that organisational culture is mutually constructed through contesting power relations and the interactions of organisational members. In order to interpret and analyse the empirical data, this thesis developed the concept of performance discourse. This thesis argues that performance discourse influences conduct and behaviour at a taken for granted routine level. It is predicated on competition, financialization of the individual, internalising responsibility and the intensification of work and elitism. Performance discourse goes beyond the dualism that views culture as either a thing or as a metaphor discussed in previous studies. In so doing, it helps us to make sense of why the idea that culture is still a ‘thing’ and a tool for managerial manipulation still dominates industry perceptions, fuelling the continuing, widespread belief that culture is installed top-down.

This thesis investigates the theme of "manufacturing offshoring" that became a political issue during the 2004 U.S. presidential election. As during previous elections, employment became a key focus on the home front. Whereas the 1992 presidential election was marked by the debate around the loss of manufacturing jobs due to NAFTA, the 2004 election focused on both manufacturing and services jobs lost due to offshoring to low cost countries. For the first time, well paying jobs, such as IT programming, were outsourced to emerging countries like India or China. Offshoring of "white collar" jobs became the focus of academic, consultant, and journalist discussions in U.S., whereas offshoring of manufacturing activities generated comparatively less interest. For decades offshoring of manufacturing activities to low cost countries was used by American companies to either reduce production cost or to avoid high tariffs on exports. Offshoring strategy was historically applied in labor intensive industries, such as the apparel and electronics sectors. On the other hand, the influence of offshoring on high-tech industries was assumed to be limited. However, with the fast technological development of China and India, this paradigm might change quickly.
(cont.) This thesis explores the U.S. manufacturing sector by looking at employment and trade data at a macro-level. The terms offshoring and outsourcing will be defined and the main international trade theories discussed. The thesis develops a model to show that offshoring was only a part of the reason for the shrinkage in manufacturing employment between 1997 and 2003; the others being a drop in demand and gains in productivity. After introducing several case studies of companies in the apparel sector and the semi-conductor industry, a framework for understanding the offshoring decision process is developed. This framework defines the conditions needed to make manufacturing in U.S. competitive with production abroad. Finally through a detailed study of the expansion of the Chinese economy and the Wal-Mart phenomenon, the thesis presents the next challenges of the U.S. manufacturing sector: the birth of new competitors for high value added products and the rising constraints on price due to the pressure of retailers on manufacturers.

Pretoria has a complex history; a contested social legacy and a rich physical context. It was severely modernised in the 1960s, destroying and discarding many of these narratives. The consequences of those decisions left us with a city devoid of a healthy street life; a city lacking comfortable public spaces; a city for buildings, not a city for people. The city belongs to however has power, whether political or financial. It does not belong to the dweller. The city became a means to exert power. As hegemonies change its pendulum effect can be seen in the city.
Building projects are used to strengthen the ideologies of each regime. It this battle of who owns the city the rich narrative of Pretoria is lost. This project interrogates the site physically, historically and socially to get to the essence of what makes this place unique; to get to the basic elements that make it A place and not just ANY place. It also looks at theoretical approaches and precedents that give evidence of similar urban challenges and their appropriate responses. The essential site conditions are clearly demarcated and became the design drivers.
Th e design drivers are: Th e site in its physical and historical context; the existing programmes; as well as systems needed for a sustainable intervention. Through a process of analysis and design the concept originated from the meeting of two conditions on site. The one condition is the built fabric and the other condition is the urban forest. The meeting of the two become the threshold not only between the two conditions but also between the inside and the outside of the new public square. The structure acts as a stoep into the city, a structure that is both a wall and an entrance.
This concept is taken through to the detail level. It aims to not only connect the urban and the built conditions but also the myriad of loosely scattered programmes in the vicinity. This thesis was interested in exploring the questions of why individuals typically do not respond strongly to climate change, and how individual motivations to do so might be strengthened. More specifically, this thesis explored two widely cited barriers to climate change action and the solutions commonly suggested to overcome them. The first barrier is the lack of personal experience with climate change, which is believed to inhibit relevant emotional processes. The second, not unrelated, barrier is that people typically perceive climate change as a distant threat, one that is not relevant to them personally, where they live, and in the present time. To test these explanations, two public surveys of residents of both the UK (n = 616) and Switzerland (n = 316) explored the relationships among negative emotions, perceptions of geographically proximal and distant climate change risks, and variables that capture people’s willingness to address climate change. The findings supported the idea that stronger negative emotions were positively related to more readiness to act against climate change. The relationship between spatially close versus distant risk perceptions and measures of different forms of action was, however, more complex. Specifically, the findings revealed a strong association between global risk perceptions and policy support and a strong association between local risk perceptions and personal intentions. One explanation for these (unexpected) associations is that they are due to spontaneous matches with regard to psychological distance: Local risk perceptions are psychologically proximal on the spatial dimension and personal intentions can be regarded as proximal on the social dimension. Likewise, the spatially remote global risk perceptions can be matched to support for policies, which can be regarded as distant on the social dimension. Studies 3 and 4 tried to experimentally untangle the complex relationships between psychological distance and people’s perceptions and actions that were 2 observed in the survey research. Specifically, in both studies participants were manipulated to adopt either a spatially proximal or distant perspective on climate change. Study 3 (n = 80) measured participants emotional responses to climate change and looked at how these predicted different attitudinal and behavioural responses under a proximal or distant framework, whereas Study 4 (n = 330) more directly explored the possible effects of activating negative emotions (i.e., fear) in combination with different distance frames as part of attempts to promote action on climate change. The findings of Studies 3 and 4 suggest that decreasing the psychological distance of climate change and inducing fear can both be potentially useful strategies to promote action on climate change. However, the operation of both these strategies is more complex than is often assumed and these complexities have implications for the effectiveness of each strategy. For one thing, both attempts to reduce distance and increase fear can initiate multiple psychological processes that simultaneously increase and decrease the likelihood of acting on climate change. Because these processes work in opposition, reduced distance and increased fear can have positive effects, negative effects, or no effect at all. Together, the findings across studies highlight that psychological distance is neither an insurmountable obstacle to action against climate change – it depends on what kind of action is being considered (Studies 1 & 2) – and nor is decreasing psychological distance a panacea to motivate action – this can trigger the same kind of defensiveness that have been observed in response to other strategies, such as the use of emotion (Studies 3 & 4). In the general discussion, the theoretical implications of these insights for different theoretical models of distance, emotion, and action are considered, as are the implications for the practice of promoting public engagement with and action on climate change.

The economic crisis in the European Union has raised numerous policy questions. It has also raised many important questions for scholars. One of these is the question of why we have witnessed such radically divergent reform speeds in different countries under Economic Adjustment Programmes. Closer examination of these Programmes clearly shows their high degree of uniformity, so that the answer cannot be found in the nature of policy input. This thesis instead takes a Varieties of Capitalism approach. Looking in depth at the cases of Greece and Ireland, which represent polar opposites of the spectrum of economic models within the EU, this thesis argues that success of Economic Adjustment Programmes crucially depends on a country’s pre-existing economic model. This insight challenges the current approach to crisis resolution, which endorses a ‘one size fits all’ approach to structural reforms. An adapted version of Bruno Amable’s Varieties of Capitalism (VOC) approach is conducive to detailed analysis, as it permits disaggregating the structural reform agenda according to five institutional areas. Thus, reform patterns can be compared between countries as well as between institutional areas. The hypothesis put forward in this dissertation is that the reforms promoted in Greece and Ireland can be accurately described as a reform trajectory intended to take both countries closer to a market based variety of capitalism. The analysis, based on textual analysis of the Economic Adjustment Programmes, as well as interviews with Greek, Irish and European policy-makers, suggests that VOC predicts reform trajectories largely accurately. The application of Amable’s approach also revealed its weaknesses, particularly in underestimating the role of political decision making in times of crisis through a rather mechanistic conceptualisation of the EAP implementation process. Thesis (MTech (Business Administration in Project Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019.There is a need to draw a balance between satisfying needs, be they of the customer or the beneficiaries of the project, and that of maximising the utilisation of resources. Value management seeks to merge all aspects of the project process, and to find a balance between satisfaction of the project‟s needs and the stakeholder‟s interests. This technique is meant to improve the reconciliation and value of differing judgements and priorities to improve on the deliverables of the project. Consequently, the principles of defining and adding measurable value focuses on reaching the objectives, and finding solutions to problems before they appear. Therefore, the end results become an innovative way of integrating all operational activities, which enhance pre-emptive, risk aversive management. Value management is considered as a critical aspect in the effective management of project processes to reduce the high project failure rate in the construction industry. Part of the purpose of this study is to bring about awareness and knowledge of the effective use of the value management tool. This empirical research focused on project managers and other project practitioners who are tasked with the execution of project processes. A total of 125 respondents was drawn from the sampling frame. A structured questionnaire was used for the purpose, and collected data was captured and analysed, using the SPSS tool and an Excel spreadsheet. Relationships in the illustrations were interpreted and presented, forming the basis on which findings, conclusion and recommendations were made. A questionnaire has structured closed-ended questions (quantitative) and open-ended questions (qualitative) to complement each other. A mixed method approach (qualitative and quantitative) was applied to take advantage of the benefits of these two methods. The qualitative research applied a content analysis of the collected data.

"The study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one provides the context in which the study is set, the focus and objectives of the study, its significance, and other preliminary issues including the hypothesis and literature survey. Chapter two first seeks to briefly portray the current state of human rights in Africa. In the second part, history and development of the African Union is traced, within the context of its predecessor - the OAU. Its third part extracts and analyses the specific human rights content of the AU Constitutionve Act and other relevant provisions, both independently and collectively; while its fourth part progresses to examine the conribution of the AU to human rights so far, by gauging and scrutinizing the human rights content of its summits. The fifth and final part scrutinizes the implications of the linkage of human rights to development and hence, its re-conceptualisation or otherwise, in Africa. Chapter three seeks to examine the extant implications of the AU human rights agenda on the existing human rights protection framework. First, it provides a brief overview of the existing regional human rights protection system, while its second part elucidates the human rights enforcement mechanisms that have been developed under the African Charter system. Its third part seeks to examine the problem of enforcement of, and non-compliance with human rights in Africa, with a view to understanding the problem, and forging a way forward. Its fourth part looks at the relationship between the AU and the existing human rights institutions within the context of the AU Constituve Act, while its concluding part addresses the latent risk of proliferation and redundancy that might attend the proposed creation of more human rights-oriented institutions under the AU/NEPAD; proposing rationalization of the same and the fusion of compatible mandates, with the view of avoiding unnecessary and expensive duplications. Chapter four seeks to present the probable picture of the fusion of the emerging and existing frameworks. This study explores the new quality assurance policy in Kuwait University. It aims to portray its positive development with the constraints and even the dysfunctions. A case study method is employed to focus on the new policy as it has been experienced in the science and education colleges. The QA policy at KU is an all-embracing approach that encompasses many aspects of institutional life. This study attempts to reflect the breadth of the strategy. The early chapters review the literature about quality assurance in higher education. This indicates that quality issues are of high priority worldwide. In this sense KU' s policy reflects an international trend but naturally the specific approach reflects the national context. Data were primarily taken from KU audiences, which include; academic administrators, faculty and students. Documents and questionnaires are also primary sources, which support the numerous interviews with KU informants. This diverse material provides for the triangulation of methods. After reporting the findings from the empirical investigations, an attempt is made to interpret the data through the employment of organisational metaphors. Four main metaphors were employed: KU as a system; KU as a political organisation; KU as an unstable changing organisation and KU as an organisational culture: an academic community. Metaphors as such provide an open-ended approach to the reader to perceive the new policy from different angles and perspectives relevant to the institution at large. The generalisations reached in the conclusions chapter support the fact that the institutionalisation of the new policy is influenced by external as well as internal factors that need to be considered by the various stakeholders of KU. These are the political and socio-economic local and international climate, the organisational structure of the institution and the cultural aspects of the academic community. Educational implications/recommendations are provided to further guide the ultimate development and success of the QA programme. Nonetheless, the new policy is still in its early stages of development to make confident judgements of its success or failure, as this study is exploratory rather than judgmental.

Throughout the nation, grocery retailers are reentering underserved communities amidst growing public awareness of food deserts and the rise of federal, state, and local programs incentivizing urban grocery stores. And yet, even with expanding research on food deserts and their public health impacts, there is still a lack of consensus on whether grocery stores truly offer the best solution. Furthermore, scholars and policymakers alike have limited understandings of the broader neighborhood implications of grocery stores newly introduced into underserved urban communities.
This dissertation analyzes how local organizations and agencies pursue grocery development in order to understand the conditions for success implementation. To do this, I examine the historical drivers, planning processes, and outcomes of two extreme cases of urban grocery development: a Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market (a chain value store) in San Francisco's Bayview Hunters Point and the Mandela Foods Cooperative (a worker-owned cooperative) in Oakland's West Oakland districts.
Through a comparative institutional analysis, I find that both Fresh and Easy and Mandela Foods reflect distinctive neighborhood revitalization legacies, critical moments of institutional capacity building, localized versions of national policy narratives, and the role of charismatic leaders in grocery store implementation. While national narratives shape the rhetoric of urban grocery development, ultimately local context dictates how food access issues are defined, who addresses them, and how. These findings suggest that federal grocery incentive programs should: 1) maintain a broad framework that enables local communities to define food access problems and their solutions on a case-by-case basis, 2) encourage diverse solutions not limited to grocery stores and supermarkets, and 3) emphasize community reinvestment goals.

Civil and political strive in Africa is in the main, this is due to an increase in disputes over who won elections. The disputed elections in Kenya, Zanzibar, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Ethiopia and more recently Ivory Coast to mention but a few, indicate how disputes over election results in Africa have been escalating. ‘Over the last couple of decades, many elections in Africa have been marred by ‘extreme controversy’. Elections ‘rigging and brigandage’, violence and elections invalidation are common phenomena in Africa. The report prepared by the British-Angola Forum (BAF) following a conference on the challenges for free and fair elections in Angola, reveals that many elections in Africa are ‘subject to human error and manipulation’ and this is mainly because those who are in power want to cling onto it especially ‘in countries where there is a perception that politics means money’. Adejumobi argues that in Africa most elections in their current form appear to be ‘a fading shadow of democracy’ jeopardising the frail democratic project itself. Ethanolic extracts from the ritidome, the barks of the stem and of the fruit, and the seed of Swartzia argentea, S. laevicarpa, S. panacoco, S. polyphylla and S. sericea were tested for decay fungi. Pycnoporus sanguineus (L.:Fr.) Murr., Trametes villosa (Fr.) Ryv. and Lenzites trabea Pers.:Fr. were inoculated in 90 mL of Malt Agar plus 10 mL of each extract, in the concentrations of 0,1, 0.01 and 0,001 mg/mL. Colony area (cm2) and antifungal index of the extracts were calculated. Significant difference among the fungal growth average (cm2) was observed in the extracts of the ritidome, the barks of the fruit and of the seed, despite the species studied. However, there was no difference in the extracts of the barks of the stem in S. laevicarpa and S. sericea. There was significant variation among the averages of the fungal mycelial area (cm2) in each extract concentration. The extract of the ritidome of S. argentea, S. polyphylla, and S. sericea, besides one from the barks of the stem of S. panacoco, resulted in 100% antifungal index for all fungal species. These extracts were submitted to liquid-liquid partition with solvents of increasing polarity resulting the following fractions: hexanic, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and water, aiming the fraction antifungal activity in thin layer cromatography TLC. Dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and the watery fraction were applied in different concentrations on each Swartzia species studied, in TLC GF254. The watery fraction was eluted with butanol:ethanol:water (4,0; 1,1; 1,9), the fraction ethyl acetate with the solvent system dichloromethane:ethyl acetate: methanol (5:3:2) plus 0,01mL acetic acid, and the dichloromethane fraction with the solvent system dichloromethane: ethyl acetate (7:3). The disengagement of young people from community participation is a debate that pervades the literature and is a concern for UK policing whose strategic aim is to secure the efficient and effective engagement of young people in an operational landscape that is shaped by austerity. Digital and Social Media is seen as offering immense potential to deliver enhanced participation at a fraction of the cost of traditional engagement, but there is a distinct lack of empirical research associated with the police use of digital and social media to engage young people. The aim of this research is to allow young people to shape the way Nottinghamshire Police engage with them via digital and social media. To this end, a 40-point engagement framework based on the principles of ‘Quid Pro Quo’ reciprocal engagement is offered as the product of this youthful insight. The theoretical positioning of the research is within the Interpretivist paradigm and social control theory and procedural justice theory justify why engaging young people is so important to the survival of the British style of policing. A qualitative methodology frames the research design, which includes the use of the semi-structured interview and four focus groups involving young people. The thesis suggests that young people are not disinterested, lackadaisical or apathetic when it comes to police engagement, they are simply disconnected from the police engagement framework, which appears to have failed historically to understand how and why young people wish to participate in policing. Whilst participants felt that Nottinghamshire Police’s digital offer is suitable for young people, it is concluded that digital and social media is not the ‘Holy Grail’ or indeed the panacea for police engagement and therefore young people may not yet be ready to accept such technology and swap physical visibility and accessibility for their virtual counterparts.
