Повний текст джерелаIn the Gulf of Guinea (GG), freshwater originated from river discharges and high precipitation rates contribute to the upper ocean density stratification, and play a key role in modulating air-sea interactions. However, the thermohaline variations of the ocean upper layers within the freshwater plumes in the GG are still poorly known, as they are poorly observed and documented. The main objective of this thesis is therefore to study and document the spatial variability at horizontal mesoscale (10-100 km) and vertical (0-100m), from intra-seasonal to seasonal time scales of the thermohaline 3D structure in the freshwater plume areas of the GG: mainly the Congo and Niger Rivers plumes. First, using SSS SMOS satellite data, our study showed that freshwater plumes in this region extend towards the open ocean following two propagation regimes. During September to January, they propagate northwestward while from January to April they redirect to the southwest, where their maximum extension is observed in April. The rest of the year, from May to August, is marked by a surface salinization episode, where the freshwater plumes dissipate with a minimum extension observed in August. A salinity budget analysis in the surface mixed layer allowed highlighting the main physical processes controlling the seasonal variability of salinity within these freshwater plumes. We showed that horizontal advection processes and freshwater fluxes by precipitation and river discharges are the main contributors of low SSS distribution in this region. In the southeastern Gulf of Guinea, off Congo, the horizontal SSS advection is dominated by Ekman wind-driven currents. Second, we showed that the offshore distribution of the Congo plume on intra-seasonal time scales is associated with salt barrier layers and with thermohaline staircases profiles. In a case study (for 2016/03/31), we showed that the observed thermohaline staircases would result from the shear dynamics between the surface Ekman flow associated with the offshore (North-Westward) distribution of the Congo plume, and the geostrophic (South-Eastward) flow associated with the denser and saltier subsurface water masses of the open ocean to the west. Finally, using a Lagrangian approach, we have highlighted the origin and large-scale structuring of water masses involved in the strong haline stratification observed off Congo. This study showed the strong shear of the currents associated with the vertical salinity gradients within the water column associated with the staircases profiles

Повний текст джерелаFloodplains of large tropical rivers are environments characterized by periodic flooding from the river and its tributaries. Numerous studies emphasize the paradoxical aspect of these ecosystems, between ‘productive’ environments naturally fertilized by alluvial deposits, or 'constraining' and ‘risky’ environments. Livelihoods in the floodplains are varied, but in most cases people combine agricultural activities with fishing, pastoralism, hunting and the extraction of wild plant resources. Although the complementarity of production activities is recognized in most studies as an adaptation to exploit the diversity of natural resources at different stage of flooding, this multi-activity is rarely examined in detail. Adopting an interdisciplinary, systemic and diachronic approach, this thesis aims to demonstrate how multi-activity enhances the adaptation to a fluctuating environment whose dynamics can be observed at three main time scales: the seasonal scale, the historical scale and the scale of the individual's life. This work is based on ethnographic interviews, on collection of eco-hydrological data and on landscape analysis conducted during a period of eight months in the village of Mossaka in the Congolese cuvette region in the Congo basin. Firstly, we show that the spatial and temporal association of a diversity of activities allow the inhabitants of Mossaka to adapt to the seasonal variability of water level. These include a diversity of fishing techniques, several agricultural systems (raised-field agriculture and flood-recessional agriculture) in which a rich agrobiodiversity is planted, and many other activities—some depending on natural resources, others not. Secondly, by reconstructing the dynamics of the social-ecological system over time, we examine how the different activities, and their relative importance, have changed since the pre-colonial period and we identify the main drivers of change. In particular, we describe the demographic, ecological, economic and social changes that have led to the rapid adoption of flood-recessional agriculture in the last thirty years. Finally, by analyzing the life stories of several inhabitants of Mossaka, we show that the great flexibility of the multi-activity livelihood system allows people to adapt to different challenges and uncertainties—particularly social ones. This thesis contributes to the few studies that examine in an integrated manner the diversity of livelihood activities in floodplain environments, and advocates greater recognition of the importance of multi-activity livelihood systems and of social diversity. This work also contributes to a better understanding of the Congolese Cuvette region, which despite its major ecological and economic role has so far attracted little scientific interest

Повний текст джерелаThe terminal lobe complex of the Congo deep-sea fan, which is a unique region to study the transfer of organic matter from the land to the Atlantic Ocean, is located 760 km off the Equatorial African coast and at 5,000 m depth. This region covers 3000 km2 and is the terminal receptacle of the particulate organic matter provided by turbidity currents originating from the Congo River canyon. This thesis is part of the Congolobe ANR-project and aims at providing information on the biogeochemical composition of these organic matter inputs to study their origin, distribution and fate in lobe complex sediments. Nine short sediment cores (~20 cm) and one long core (~900 cm) were collected in different sites of the lobes complex for different sediment analyses. The strategy of the study consists of the following five analytical steps: (1) to achieve a facies and granulometry description of the sediments; (2) to study the global and molecular geochemical characteristics of the sediments (%OC , C/N, δ13Corg, δ15N, 137Cs, fatty acids and tetraethers); (3) to compare these data to data from marine and terrestrial end-members using a binary mixing model (δ13Corg) and a discriminant analysis (fatty acids); (4) to consider a specific site as a time reference and (5) to discuss the fate of the sedimentary organic matter at the millennium time scale of the overall area by combining different data in a multivariate analysis. All the different proxies used in this study revealed that lobe sediments could be a sink for organic inputs from the Congo River. Organic carbon concentrations are high in silty-clay sediments (~3 to 5 %). Over the study region, 70 to 80 % of the organic carbon originate from the Congo River and consist of vegetal detritus and soil derived-OM. The remaining 20 to 30 % consists of highly degraded organic matter. A more detailed lipid biomarker analysis shows that the organic matter is poorly reactive; however, fatty acid analyses reveal the presence of fresh planktonic compounds in some samples. An important finding of this study is that the composition and the distribution of the organic matter in sediments are consistent with turbiditic deposition patterns (e.g., rapidity of transfer, frequency and thickness of deposits) as well as with the granulometry properties of the sediments from the terminal lobe complex. Due to the specific sediment characteristics, organic matter is exceptionally well preserved in the anoxic sediment layers, reaching back to millennial time scales. Hence, studying the lobe complex area is of great interest for a better understanding of the fate of terrestrial organic matter in the global ocean

The following study deals with the building of cooperation between riparian States of the Congo basin, in Africa. Whilst based on a legal approach, this work goes beyond the theoretical basis of the sharing of freshwater resource, by including geopolitics factors related to the case study. The International law of freshwater resources helps defining the legal framework within which riparian States of a drainage basin organize their cooperation. Recently established, the River basin organization for the Congo “Commission internationale du basin du Congo-Oubangui-Sangha (CICOS)”, proves to be dynamic and proactive. However, pressure coming from regional actors as well as international actors command to be particularly careful about mid-term and long-term management of the water resource in the area.
