In recent years, the field of network troubleshooting has garnered significant attention from researchers due to the complexity and importance of this task. The work presented in this thesis focuses on automating network troubleshooting using performance metrics extracted from packet captures. The first contribution of this thesis lies in extracting features to identify the root cause of an anomaly by analyzing TCP packet traces with bad performance. We have categorized four frequently observed causes of degradation: transmission problems, congestion problems, jitter problems, and application-limited problems. The second contribution of this thesis involves developing an automated method to detect the moment of exiting the Slow-Start state. The significance of this method lies in saving valuable time in the analysis of network degradation, as the Slow-Start state serves as a key indicator for fault diagnosis. The third contribution of this thesis revolves around identifying the BBR congestion control algorithm. The primary goal of our approach is to detect whether packet pacing is employed in a TCP connection. This method relies on modeling the distribution of inter-packet duration during the Slow-Start state. The objective is to distinguish unimodal distributions of inter-packet intervals in the case of BBR compared to mixed two component distributions in the case of CUBIC

This report focuses on Packet Tracer and GNS3 and how these can be used to simulate real equipment at a company to prepare for implementation of new hardware while mitigating cost. It also shows how these can be used for educational purposes as a complement to real-world equipment for the courses held by Cisco. It’s also an evaluation of both softwares to decide which of them that is the best choise in a given scenario. A topology is created, complete with an IPaddressing table and fairly common configurations. The goal is to examine how the softwares behave and if they can handle the configurations. Both of them do well during testing, but the images of IOS that were tested in GNS3 do not support PortSecurity in its standard configuration so the title go to Packet Tracer. Packet Tracer is best suited for basic educational purposes because of its easy and understandable packet tracking abilities while GNS3 is better for more advanced topologies with support for importing pre-owned hardware.

Characterizing groundwater flows in karst aquifers at different scales of space and time, is not an easy task due to the high level of heterogeneity of these aquifers. Because the limited testing radius of classical hydraulic methods (slug tests, pumping tests), the regional hydraulic parameters of karst systems are generally estimated using the flow recession analysis method. But this integrative method generally does not give a differentiation into regionally varying parameters. Also, it is generally difficult to gather enough data to characterize aquifer heterogeneities at regional scale. For this reason, most of studies about hydrodynamic characterization of karst aquifer focus on local scales, i.e experimental field site scale or borehole scale; measurements at small scale could then be upscaled to obtain hydrodynamic parameters at regional scale. Consequently, understanding scale dependence of groundwater flows organization in such a context is of prime importance for the development of regional scale model.In this study, the monitoring of groundwater flow and transport is performed at several scales of time and space, within a single Mediterranean karstic carbonate aquifer, the Lez karst aquifer, located South of France. Groundwater is intensely pumped in a karst conduit upstream of the main karst outlet (Lez spring), for regional water supply. At regional scale, the relatively dense groundwater monitoring network permits to determine the hydrodynamic properties of the aquifer inferred from the hydrodynamic response to pumping at the Lez spring. At the scale of the experimental field site (Terrieu site), that comprises 22 boreholes, several experiments (i.e. pumping tests, packer tests, slug and injection tests) were performed to determine the hydrodynamic properties at experimental field site scale and borehole scale. Tracer experiments were also performed to provide an estimation of transport properties both at the scale of the experimental field site and at regional scale.The hydrodynamic properties estimated at different scale of space and time (for different hydrological conditions) were compared with flow paths organization linked to the geological structure of the reservoir. At regional scale both the hydrological conditions (i.e. high or low water level) and geological compartmentalization that impact the hydraulic connectivity, control the hydrodynamic properties. Tracer experiments revealed short time transfer and high connectivity between injection points and the spring. At the experimental field site scale, pumping and tracer test highlighted heterogeneous flow pattern that can be linked to the position of boreholes and the main geological features. At borehole scale, hydraulic tests revealed a high range of hydrodynamic properties (transmissivity from 10-11 m²/s to 10-2 m²/s) depending on the investigated part of the aquifer (matrix, fracture or drain).Depending on the water level conditions, the aquifer presents variable organization of flows that modify the hydrodynamic parameters. As expected, variability of hydrodynamic parameters depends on the scale of investigation: a difference of 10 to 105 has been quantified for a same parameter characterized at borehole scale and at regional scale. This hydrogeological parameters quantification of karst system provides important constrain about multiscale modeling using conceptual models to represent the characteristics of the main flow paths

Las principales contribuciones de esta tesis son dos: -Desarrollo de un método de creación de modelos computacionales del corazón con el fin de simular taquicardias ventriculares, que incluye un nuevo modelo específico para calcular la orientación de las fibras en los tractos de salida del corazón. Este método permite realizar simulaciones multiescala, obteniendo el ECG virtual de cada paciente para diferentes escenarios. -Tratamiento de los resultados de las simulaciones. Primero, los ECG reales de los pacientes fueron comparados con ECGs simulados para encontrar el sitio de origen más probable de la taquicardia. En los casos en los que no se disponía de datos de imagen del paciente, el ECG del paciente fue clasificado mediante técnicas de aprendizaje automático, entrenadas con los datos simulados, para predecir el sitio de origen.

Los trastornos gastrointestinales funcionales (TGF) siguen siendo los trastornos más habituales tratados en la práctica gastroenterológica. Están asociados con los niveles más altos de distrés psicológico, deterioro de la calidad de vida y un mayor uso de la atención médica. El objetivo principal de la tesis fue evaluar el nivel de discrepancia (es decir, la incongruencia) entre la percepción de pacientes y médicos sobre la calidad de vida del paciente y el efecto que esto tiene sobre el distrés psicológico, la satisfacción con el médico y la calidad de vida. Más específicamente, exploramos el efecto de la incongruencia en un entorno de atención primaria y lo comparamos entre dos grupos de pacientes; pacientes con diagnóstico de TGF y pacientes con diagnóstico orgánico. Los resultados del primer estudio indicaron que los programas educativos breves podrían beneficiar tanto a los pacientes como a los médicos, sin embargo, todavía parece haber bibliografía limitada con respecto a programas efectivos que se enfoquen específicamente en la gravedad de los síntomas y la calidad de vida de los pacientes. Los hallazgos de los análisis realizados con la incongruencia mostraron que tanto la incongruencia como el diagnóstico contribuyen el distrés psicológico. Los resultados de los análisis cuantitativos adicionales respaldaron esto aún más, además en estos se encontraron correlaciones positivas estadísticamente significativas para la incongruencia con el distrés psicológico y la edad. Las pacientes del sexo femenino y los pacientes con diagnóstico de TGF presentaron mayores niveles del distrés psicológico y peor calidad de vida, además de menor satisfacción con el médico que en el caso de los pacientes con diagnóstico TGF. De la parte cualitativa de la investigación, se encontraron cinco grandes tópicos al realizar un análisis temático; (1) Enfermedad, problemas emocionales y personales (2) Interacción enfermedad-sistema sanitario (3) Sistema sanitario (4) Intervención y (5) Pacientes. Hasta donde sabemos, este es el primer estudio que investiga la influencia de la incongruencia en los entornos de atención primaria de la salud utilizando este procedimiento. Además, este es también el primer estudio que explora las razones subyacentes de la incongruencia utilizando un enfoque cualitativo.

Since two decades, the international protection of geographical indications is characterized by a “blockage” in the negotiations at the World Trade Organization opposing the countries favorable to the protection of geographical indications to countries more skeptical in this regard. Deriving from a compromise between the European conception of the protection of GIs and the American one, the minimum standards of TRIPS have revealed the different legal options in this field and have resulted in a passionate debate over the appropriate role of the State. History shows that the advocacy for, or indictment against one or the other way of protecting GIs focuses essentially on the philosophy of protection in one or the other territories. As a reminder, the European Union “culture” is to protect industries far too exposed to competition while the American “culture” is to preserve economic freedom of operators and to grant monopoly on a geographical name only where such name has been tested on the market and is recognized by the “public” as having a geographical anchorage. Equally compelling, neither of these philosophies has allowed reaching the most acceptable balance for GI regime. This work seeks to transcend them. It bets that everything has not been tried yet, at least from a legal perspective. In order to find a common solution and a way forward to multilateral protection of geographical indications, the paper relies on the culture of “human rights”, not really with a view to “moralize” the field of study but more to deduct practical answers deriving from the international human rights law. As a matter of fact, article 15.1 c) of the Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights provides that “The States Parties to the present Covenant recognize the right of everyone […] to benefit from the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author”. The activation of this article could allow approaching geographical indications operators, not only as beneficiaries of certain rights but also as beneficiaries of public policies. By virtue of article 15.1 c), there shall be a right to benefit from the GI protection (“right-liberty”) but also, a right to claim certain public policies (“right-debt”) in this regard. Beyond this seemingly strict framework for GIs, the reference to international human rights law proves to beneficial to the necessary balance between the rights of GI operators and the rights of the public. Incidentally, this balance is inclusive of multiple issues which is essential to the legitimacy of the multilateral regime of protection of GIs

With the extreme popularity of Internet, network attacks emerge in an endless stream in recent years. One of the most serious attacks is distributed denial of service attack (DDoS), which easily causes large damage. DDoS attackers usually forge the source address of IP packet to hide their positions such that it is difficult to trace back attackers. To alleviate DDoS, this work takes advantage of the packet-marking method to trace the attacker’s location, as well as to detect DDoS attacks. Once detecting and locating DDoS attacks, this work initiates an overlay-network defense system to block the attacks. The basic concept of the packet-marking method is to insert some route information into rare-used fields of IP header. The insertion is based on probability. Even if attackers forges the source address of IP packet, this method can find out the attacking path by using the route information carried by the marked packets. With the attacking path, our work is also able to detect some attack packets, which have same source address but come from different far routers. Finally, this work implemented a system based on the packet marking method and the overlay-network defense approach. And this work integrated a new detection method based on packet marking into Snort. The experimental results show that our system can detect, locate, and block DDoS effectively.

Testing networking devices before releasing them to the market is a way of ensuring their quality and robustness. Replay technique with artificial or real-world traffic is a method used to test networking devices. Using real-world traffic is more preferable as it displays more realistic properties in comparison with artificial traffic. The challenges with testing products with real-world traffic are mainly the high volume of the captured traces and the prolonged time required for the replay testing. In order to efficiently reproduce the defects produced by networking devices and reduce the replay time, it is necessary to reduce the size of the traces that trigger the defect of networking devices. In order to perform a defect-based traces downsizing, we propose a binary and a linear downsizing algorithms respectively based on binary and linear search algorithms. A metric called downsizing ratio is defined is order to evaluate the efficiency of the traces downsizing. The evaluation of the defects distribution show that ICMP and HTTP defects represent around 60% of the total number of defects experienced by networking devices. In addition, the binary downsizing and linear downsizing achieve a downsizing ratio of 77% and 80% respectively. As a result, the time needed to perform testing is reduced by the same amount. This is significant since the downsizing techniques used can improve the testing of networking devices.

Well-classified packet traces make researchers to pick up the class of traces what they want quickly. However, opening packet trace might expose the user’s privacy information and let attackers use to exploit. This work aims to provide extracting, classifying, and anonymizing packet traces. We propose PCAP Lib framework which achieves three goals. First, actively extract healthiness and malicious traces from real-world traffic to classify into 10 types of application by multiple detection devices logs. Second, we present an anonymization method to protect personal privacy through deep packet anonymization (DPA). Besides, no one detection device can provide 100% accuracy under packet trace testing; we design an analysis procedure to investigate the cause of false positive (FP)/ false negative (FN) in devices and find out the frequent cases as the third goal. In the result, we collect 323 distinctive packet traces in five months. Among them, 33% are healthy and 67% are malicious. In anonymization, we define “privacy/utility” and “efficiency” to evaluate the different anonymization methods. DPA achieves the best efficiency of 93% than other 27% or 33%. In FP/FN case studies, 63% of FP causes are due to traffic similarity and 62% of FN causes are due to signature insufficiency.

Owing to trace analytes and high matrix content are always the main obstacles should be overcome in conjuncting analytical chemistry with environmental and biological science, the development a convenient and robust analytical technique dealing with high salt contented samples is also thought crucial for the determination of trace metals in saline sample. Nowadays, solid phase extraction is the most popular method for the preconcentration of trace elements. However, the complicated operation procedure and the use of large volume of chemicals can always lead to server contamination problem. For purpose of simplifying the analytical procedure and minimizing the volume of used chemicals, a solid phase extraction method, based on the polymer-metal interaction, was developed to couple with on line ICP-MS measurement. In this study, the potential of a micro column packed with polyvinylchloride (PVC) beads was ensured for the construction of a SI-lab on valve (SI-LOV) on-line matrix removal and metal preconcentration system. Based on optimized results, the performance of PVC packed-column for the preconcentration of trace Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb from aqueous samples was mainly depending on pH value , sample flow rate and eluent flow rate. By the use of SI-LOV and automization techniques, the overall procedure can be accomplished within 8 min and the detection limits of analyte ions are in the range of ng/L to sub-ng/L. The accuracy of the developed method was confirmed by the analysis of certified reference materials of seawater and urine samples.
