In optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) systems, since beam size is finite, and relative position and attitude between transmitter and receiver is not always stationary, both beam alignment and shaping accuracies are important parameters. Analysis based on a power generation efficiency calculation model of general OWPT systems shows that their tolerances are quite demanding, especially for long range OWPT, and relaxation is inescapably necessary. This study introduces the fly eye lens as a candidate to relax these difficulties and, moreover, it features producing homogeneous irradiation onto the solar cell array. All of these are essential to OWPT systems. In this study, cooperative OWPT is discussed, in which solar cell array and power transmitter mutually align each other. Its efficiency calculation model is integrated with a fly eye module surrounded by reflective walls. System level requirements are analyzed regarding beam shaping and alignment in terms of power generation ratio, and it is clarified that this module largely relaxes requirements. In this module, beam power is confined within the module and will be eventually absorbed by the solar cell as the incident beam is within the acceptance angle. This feature avoids degradation of power generation ratio due to beam shape mismatch. These advantages bring progress towards building operational OWPT.

Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) is a promising technology for remote energy supply, especially for powering Internet of things (IoT) terminals. Light-emitting diode (LED)-based power sources of OWPT are attractive for the development of high-performance systems without the constraints of safety issues. In this paper, the electricity output of a near-infrared LED-OWPT is significantly improved. The saturation output caused by the small lens aperture in the LED array collimation scheme was analyzed. The experiment achieved a maximum electricity output of more than 1 W from a 50 × 50 mm2 GaAs solar cell at 1 m transmission distance. In addition, the thermal features also proved the feasibility of a high-output LED-OWPT system for practical applications.

Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) is a technology that supplies energy remotely. Due to the great advantages of long transmission distances, high directionality, no electromagnetic interference noise, and loose safety regulations, light emitting diode (LED) based OWPT systems become appropriate candidates for powering various applications, especially for the Internet of things (IoT). In this paper, improved LED-OWPT systems are proposed based on a collimation scheme for optimizing the system dimension and output. In a single LED configuration, the system dimension is compressed by 46% while the high transmission efficiency is maintained. As for the LED-array system, the dimension is compressed by 56%, and the output is enhanced by 40%. In the experiment, a high electricity output of 532 mW is achieved at 1 m transmission distance. In addition, the effect of misalignment between LED and lens and the potential of long-distance transmission are clarified in the LED-array OWPT system.

In an optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) system, position and size of the photovoltaic device (PV) should be accurately determined from the light source position. Even though the detection of PV for OWPT has been studied and reported in some literature, the methods reported thus far are not so robust against varying background illumination. This study aims to solve such problems utilizing an image sensor which generates a differential absorption image from two wavelength images. Unnecessary background illumination presented in the two images is subtracted in the differential image. The differential image of the Si substrate target, which simulates PV, was detected by this sensor from a 104.5 cm distance. Signal illumination intensity was less than 1 μW/cm2 on the target, and detection accuracy was 3.1% for the diameter of the substrate and about 6.3% for the area. The system level requirement is derived, and they were verified by these results. The detection range of this sensor is shown to be expandable at the cost of, for example, increasing the receiver diameter of the image sensor or controlling the transmitter beam’s divergence. With the simple experiment apparatus, preliminary results of performance assessment were obtained and issues for performance improvement and potential of this image sensor were recognized.

Power-over-fiber is a power transmission technology using optical fibers that offers various features not available in conventional power lines, such as copper wires. The basic configuration of power-over-fiber comprises three key components: light sources, optical fibers, and photovoltaic power converters. This review article presents the features of power-over-fiber and its key components. Moreover, recent advancement in power-over-fiber technologies based on their latest results is introduced, focusing primarily on papers presented at the Optical Wireless and Fiber Transmission Conferences (OWPT) from 2019 to 2021.

Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) system is a technology that supplies energy from remote locations, having some features such as long-distance transmission, high directivity, and no electromagnetic noise interference. This study investigated the optical transmission efficiency and photoelectric conversion efficiency with a transmission distance of 10 m using GaInP power converter cells with a small area of 2.40 × 2.40 mm2 and a 635 nm high-power laser over 50 W/cm2. As a result, we achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 44.7% under 6.7 W/cm2 (0.14 W) and 37.2% under 53.5 W/cm2 (1.1 W) irradiation. These results suggested that W-class optical wireless power transmission could be realized by expanding the converter cell area. Additionally, it was found that the reductions of the divergence angle of the laser and the heat generation of the power converter cell were critical issues for further lengthening the distance and increasing the power.

This paper is an experimental characterization of a light-receiving module containing a fly-eye lens system with high tolerance to beam irradiation conditions. The fly-eye lens system, which is tolerant to fluctuations in beam shape, beam size, number of beams, beam incident position, and beam incident direction, was proposed, a light receiver module with a fly-eye lens system was constructed, and its characteristics were evaluated. The effect of the beam size on the fly-eye lens system was evaluated and the tolerance to misalignment of beam incident position was measured. When a GaAs solar cell was irradiated with a laser beam of 450 nm wavelength and 6 W light output through a 90 cm long water tank with tap water, a maximum output of 0.755 W was obtained as underwater OWPT. In addition, a fly-eye lens system with mirrors applied to four surfaces was proposed and fabricated as a light-receiving side module that can receive high incident angles from any direction of up, down, left, and right and its effectiveness was clarified through experiments.

In order to extract and enhance the weak fault feature of rolling element bearings in strong noise conditions, the Empirical Wavelet Transform (EWT) is improved and a novel fault feature extraction and enhancement method is proposed by combining the Maximum Correlated Kurtosis Deconvolution (MCKD) and improved EWT method. At first, the MCKD method is conducted to de-noise the signal by eliminating the non-impact components. Then, the Fourier spectrum is segmented by local maxima or minima in the envelope of the amplitude spectrum with a pre-set threshold based on the noise level. By building up the wavelet filter banks based on the spectrum segmentation result, the signal is adaptively decomposed into several sub-signals. Finally, by choosing the most meaningful sub-signal with the maximum kurtosis, the fault feature can be extracted in the squared envelope spectrum and teager energy operator spectrum of the chosen component. Both simulations and experiments are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. It is shown that the spectrum segmentation result of improved EWT is more reasonable than the traditional EWT in strong noise conditions. Furthermore, compared with commonly used methods, such as the Fast Kurtogram (FK) and the Optimal Wavelet Packet Transform (OWPT) method, the proposed method is more effective in the fault feature extraction and enhancement of rolling element bearings.

Abstract. Polynyas facilitate air–sea fluxes, impacting climate-relevant properties such as sea ice formation and deep water production. Despite their importance, polynyas have been poorly represented in past generations of climate models. Here we present a method to track the presence, frequency and spatial distribution of polynyas in the Southern Ocean in 27 models participating in the Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and two satellite-based sea ice products. Only half of the 27 models form open-water polynyas (OWPs), and most underestimate their area. As in satellite observations, three models show episodes of high OWP activity separated by decades of no OWP, while other models unrealistically create OWPs nearly every year. In contrast, the coastal polynya area is overestimated in most models, with the least accurate representations occurring in the models with the coarsest horizontal resolution. We show that the presence or absence of OWPs is linked to changes in the regional hydrography, specifically the linkages between polynya activity with deep water convection and/or the shoaling of the upper water column thermocline. Models with an accurate Antarctic Circumpolar Current transport and wind stress curl have too frequent OWPs. Biases in polynya representation continue to exist in climate models, which has an impact on the regional ocean circulation and ventilation that should be addressed. However, emerging iceberg discharge schemes, more adequate vertical grid type or overflow parameterisation are anticipated to improve polynya representations and associated climate prediction in the future.

Celem pracy jest określenie wpływu cyrkulacji atmosferycznej na przezimowanie rzepaku uprawianego na Lubelszczyźnie. Realizując tak postawiony cel, wykorzystano wyniki obserwacji kondycji roślin rzepaku po zimach w latach 1974/75–2009/10, które pozyskano ze stacji doświadczalnych COBORU w Bezku i Ciciborze Dużym. Uwarunkowania cyrkulacyjne przezimowania rzepaku określono na podstawie wartości wskaźnika NAO, oscylacji wschodniopolskiej strefowej i południkowej (OWPs i OWPp), a ponadto indeksów cyrkulacji strefowej, południkowej i indeksu cykloniczności oraz częstości występowania typów cyrkulacji nad obszarem Lubelszczyzny w okresie od grudnia do marca. Największy wpływ na stan przezimowania rzepaku miał przebieg warunków atmosferycznych na początku zimy. Straty na plantacjach rzepaku były znaczące, gdy w okresach zimowych notowano dużą częstość napływu powietrza z kierunku wschodniego i południowo-wschodniego, przy mniejszym udziale adwekcji z sektora zachodniego. Niekorzystny wpływ na stan rzepaku miała także większa częstość występowania sytuacji antycyklonalnych, zwłaszcza w lutym i marcu.

AbstractThe objective of this experiment was to evaluate the performance and well being of animals accommodated outdoors over the winter period on out-wintering pads (OWPs), relative to animals housed indoors in conventional slatted floor sheds. One hundred and twenty-six steers were assigned at random to one of seven treatments. The first six treatments were accommodated on OWPs. These six treatments were arranged in a three (6, 12 and 18 m2 per head space allowance) by two (wind sheltered or exposed) factorial design. A seventh treatment group (control) was housed indoors in a slatted-floor shed at a space allowance of 3 m2 per head. All animals were offered silage ad libitum and 5 kg concentrate per day. All animals were slaughtered at the end of the 151 day experiment. Animal production and indices (climatic energy demand (CED), behaviour, cleanliness, hoof condition and immune function) of animal welfare were evaluated. There was no significant effect of stocking density outdoors or sheltering on live-weight gain, carcass gain, fat score, fat score per 100 kg carcass, kidney plus channel fat (KCF) as a proportion of carcass, carcass conformation score, killing-out proportion, food intake or food efficiency. Relative to animals housed indoors on slats, animals accommodated outdoors on OWPs had higher daily live-weight gain (F < 0·001), carcass gain (F < 0·05), and food intake (F < 0·05). However, animals on the OWPs had less KCF per kg carcass and lower fat scores per 100 kg carcass. There was no effect of shelter on the CED of animals out-wintered, which was higher (P < 0·001) than their counterparts wintered indoors on slats. Animals housed on slats were cleaner than animals housed at 6 or 12 m2 per head (F < 0·05) but not 18 m2per head. There was no effect of treatment on physiological measures. Animals confined on the OWP with or without shelter, had a greater number of lying bouts per 24 h (F < 0·076), had a greater synchronized lying frequency (F < 0·082) and displayed less hesitation prior to lying when compared with animals housed on slats. Indoor animals had more white line disease (F < 0·01) and under-run (F < 0·001) on their front hoof, when compared with outdoor animals. Animals accommodated outdoors at 18 m2per head had more (F < 0·05) claw erosion while the indoor animals had a greater (F < 0·001) degree of under-run present on their hind hoof. There was no evidence to suggest that out-wintering compromised animal welfare. Further studies are required to determine the reason for the increased carcass growth and leanness of the cattle on the OWPs.

AbstractThe algorithm for and results of a newly developed multivariate non-parametric model, the Euclidean distance model (EDM), for the hourly disaggregation of daily climate data are presented here. The EDM is a resampling method based on the assumption that the day to be disaggregated has already occurred once in the past. The Euclidean distance (ED) serves as a measure of similarity to select the most similar day from historical records. EDM is designed to disaggregate daily means/sums of several climate elements at once, here temperature (T), precipitation (P), sunshine duration (SD), relative humidity (rH), and wind speed (WS), while conserving physical consistency over all disaggregated elements. Since weather conditions and hence the diurnal cycles of climate elements depend on the weather pattern, a selection approach including objective weather patterns (OWP) was developed. The OWP serve as an additional criterion to filter the most similar day. For a case study, EDM was applied to the daily climate data of the stations Dresden and Fichtelberg (Saxony, Germany). The EDM results agree well with the observed data, maintaining their statistics. Hourly results fit better for climate elements with homogenous diurnal cycles, e.g., T with very high correlations of up to 0.99. In contrast, the hourly results of the SD and the WS provide correlations up to 0.79. EDM tends to overestimate heavy precipitation rates, e.g., by up to 15% for Dresden and 26% for Fichtelberg, potentially due to, e.g., the smaller data pool for such events, and the equal-weighted impact of P in the ED calculation. The OWPs lead to somewhat improved results for all climate elements in terms of similar climate conditions of the basic stations. Finally, the performance of EDM is compared with the disaggregation tool MELODIST (Förster et al. 2015). Both tools deliver comparable and well corresponding results. All analyses of the generated hourly data show that EDM is a very robust and flexible model that can be applied to any climate station. Since EDM can disaggregate daily data of climate projections, future research should address whether the model is capable to respect and (re)produce future climate trends. Further, possible improvements by including the flow direction and future OWPs should be investigated, also with regard to reduce the overestimation of heavy rainfall rates.

In this study, oxidized wood pulp fiber (OWPF) was prepared by oxidizing wood pulp fiber (WPF) with NaIO4, and OWPFs with different oxidation degrees were obtained and characterized by light microscope, XRD, and TG. Then, OWPFs with different oxidation degrees were incorporated into thermoplastic starch (TPS) to prepare OWPF/TPS composites. The cross-section morphology, water resistance, and physical and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. SEM showed good dispersion of OWPF in the continuous TPS phase. The tensile strength of OWPF/TPS reached a maximum value of 5.02 MPa when the oxidation degree of OWPF was 0.5. Elongation at break of OWPF/TPS composites increased with the increasing oxidation degree of OWPF. Meanwhile, as a result of cross-linking, the water contact angle was also improved with the increased oxidation degree of OWPF. The study provided a new way to prepare a degradable TPS composite with satisfying properties to be used for packaging and catering.

Hubungan interpersonal yang dilakukan oleh penjual di OWBT terhadap para pembelinya adalah perasaan dihargai (respect), kemampuan penjual menempatkan diri pada situasi (calon) pembeli (emphaty), penjual di OWBT juga berusaha mendengar keinginan dan berusaha mengerti kebutuhan (calon) pembeli (audible), memberikan informasi yang jelas (clarity), dan melayani dengan sikap rendah hati (humble).

The present work contributes to the field of border and coastal surveillance sound target classification. A new feature extraction method is proposed based on the optimum wavelet packet decomposition (OWPD). According to the frequency characteristic of border and coastal surveillance sound signals, each signal is decomposed by selective multi-scale wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) and the OWPD tree is obtained. From their high dimension OWPD coefficients, we build the meaningful and compact energy feature vectors, then use them as the input vectors of the BP neural network to classify the border and coastal surveillance sound types. Extensive experimental results show that the classification efficiency is up to 94% using this feature extraction method, improved 6% compared with the method based on WPD.

The dynamic characteristics of a bottom-fixed offshore wind turbine (OWT) under earthquakes are analyzed by developing an integrated analysis model of the OWT. Further, the influence of the interactions between the rotor and support system on the structural responses of the OWT subjected to an earthquake is discussed. Moreover, a passive control method using a tuned mass damper (TMD) is applied to the OWT to control the responses under earthquakes. The effects of the mass ratio, location and tuned frequency of the TMD on controlling structural responses of the OWT under different recorded seismic waves are studied.

The condition of an offshore wind turbine (OWT) should be monitored to assure its reliability against various environmental loads and affections. The modal parameters of the OWT can be used as an indicator of its condition. This paper combines the Kalman filter, the random decrement technique (RDT), and the stochastic subspace identification (SSI) methods and proposes an RDT-SSI method to estimate the operational frequency of an OWT subjected to ambient excitation. This method imposes no requirement on the input/loads; therefore, it is relatively easy for field application. An experimental study with a small-scale OWT was conducted to verify the accuracy of the proposed RDT-SSI method. The test results implied that the frequency estimated by the RDT-SSI method is close to that estimated by an impact hammer test. Moreover, the small-scale OWT was buried at different embedment depths to simulate the influence of the scouring phenomenon, and the frequency of the OWT decreased with decreasing embedment depth. Additionally, the bolts at the root of the turbine blades were also loosened to investigate their influence on the frequency. As more blades were loosened, the identified frequency of the OWT also decreased, indicating that the proposed RDT-SSI method can be employed for the health monitoring of an OWT.

Abstract Context Noncompliance with thyroxine therapy is the most common cause of poor control of hypothyroidism. An open-label prospective study to compare once-weekly thyroxine (OWT) with standard daily thyroxine (SDT) was undertaken. Design Patients taking thyroxine doses of >3 μg/kg/d, with or without normalization of TSH, were included and administered directly observed OWT or nonobserved SDT according to patient preference based on their weight for 6 weeks. Furthermore, patients on OWT were advised to continue the same at home without supervision. Results Twenty six of 34 patients on OWT and 7 of 18 patients on SDT achieved a TSH <10 μIU/mL (P < 0.05), and 2 patients from the SDT arm were lost to follow-up. During home treatment, 15 of 25 at 12 weeks and 19 of 23 contactable patients at a median follow-up of 25 months maintained TSH below target. Thyroxine absorption test was unable to predict normalization of TSH at 6 weeks of OWT therapy. No adverse events were seen with OWT-treated patients over the 12-week follow-up period. OWT has significantly higher efficacy (OR = 5.1) than SDT for patients with thyroxine-resistant hypothyroidism and is not associated with side effects. Conclusion OWT benefits a majority of patients in the long-term treatment of thyroxine-resistant hypothyroidism, in the real-world setting.

The classification of natural waters is a way to generalize and systematize ocean color science. However, there is no consensus on an optimal water classification template in many contexts. In this study, we conducted an unsupervised classification of the PACE (Plankton, Aerosols, Cloud, and Ocean Ecosystem) synthetic hyperspectral data set, divided the global ocean waters into 15 classes, then obtained a set of fuzzy logic optical water type schemes (abbreviated as the U-OWT in this study) that were tailored for several multispectral satellite sensors, including SeaWiFS, MERIS, MODIS, OLI, VIIRS, MSI, and OLCI. The consistency analysis showed that the performance of U-OWT on different satellite sensors was comparable, and the sensitivity analysis demonstrated the U-OWT could resist a certain degree of input disturbance on remote sensing reflectance. Compared to existing ocean-aimed optical water type schemes, the U-OWT can distinguish more mesotrophic and eutrophic water classes. Furthermore, the U-OWT was highly compatible with other water classification taxonomies, including the trophic state index, the multivariate absorption combinations, and the Forel-Ule Scale, which indirectly demonstrated the potential for global applicability of the U-OWT. This finding was also helpful for the further conversion and unification of different water type taxonomies. As the fundamental basis, the U-OWT can be applied to many oceanic fields that need to be explored in the future. To promote the reproducibility of this study, an IDL®-based standalone U-OWT calculation tool is freely distributed.

More accurate wind power prediction (WPP) is of great significance for the operation of electrical power systems, as offshore wind power penetration increases continuously. As the offshore wind turbines (OWT) are a key system in converting offshore wind power into electrical power, maintaining their condition plays a pivotal role in WPP. However, it is seldom considered in traditional WPP. This paper proposes an ultra-short term offshore WPP methodology based on the condition assessment (CA) of OWTs. Firstly, a modified fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (MFCE) based CA of the OWT is presented with a new defined deterioration of indicators calculated by the relative errors. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is introduced to deal with the complicated interactions between the various monitoring data of an OWT and the dynamic marine environment. Then, with the classifications of the health conditions of the OWT, the historical operation data is classified accordingly. An OWT-condition based WPP with a backpropagation (BP) neural network is developed to deal with the non-linear mapping relations between the numerical weather prediction (NWP) information, health conditions of OWT, and the output power. The results of the case study show the influences of the OWT health conditions to its output power and verifies the effectiveness and higher accuracy of the proposed method.

Opalized white tuff (OWT) with 40 μm average particle size and 39.3 m2/g specific surface area has been introduced into polyisoprene rubber (NR). Their reinforcing effects were evaluated by comparisons with those from precipitated silica (PSi). The cure characteristic, apparent activation energy of cross-link (Eac) and reversion (Ear), and mechanical properties of a variety of composites based on these rubbers were studied. This was done using vulcanization techniques, mechanical testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that OWT can greatly improve the vulcanizing process by shortening the time of optimum cure (tc90) and the scorch time (ts2) of cross-linked rubber composites, which improves production efficiency and operational security. The rubber composites filled with 50 phr of OWT were found to have good mechanical and elastomeric properties. The tensile strengths of the NR/OWT composites are close to those of NR/PSi composites, but the tear strength and modulus are not as good as the corresponding properties of those containing precipitated silica. Morphology results revealed that the OWT is poorly dispersed in the rubber matrix. According to that, the lower interactions between OWT and polyisoprene rubber macromolecules are obtained, but similar mechanical properties of NR/OWT (100/50) rubber composites compared with NR/PSi (100/50) rubber composites are resulted.

Experimental studies of sediment transport rates due to nearshore waves are often conducted in oscillating water tunnels (OWTs). In an OWT, the oscillatory motion produced by the piston propagates almost instantaneously along the entire tunnel. Consequently, unlike the wave motion in the sea or in a wave flume, flow in an OWT is uniform along the tunnel, and second-order wave propagation effects (such as Longuet-Higgins's streaming) are absent. The effect of these hydrodynamic differences between OWT and sea waves on sediment transport rates has generally been neglected. In this paper we present a simple, practical formulation to evaluate bed shear stresses and bedload transport rates due to asymmetric and skewed waves plus a current in an OWT, based on fitting the exact results of a rigorous, analytical model of the OWT wave-current boundary layer. By then accounting for real wave effects we find that wave propagation significantly affects the predicted period-averaged net sediment transport rates. Such real wave effects can therefore not be neglected when comparing nearshore transport models with OWT data.

Repeated applications of organic waste products (OWP) are a source of trace elements (TE) inputs to agricultural topsoils. The present study aimed at (i) assessing the effects of repeated OWP inputs on the chemical properties of topsoils in two long-term field experiments (13 and 15 years; calcareous and non-calcareous soils), (ii) evaluating TE phytoavailability and their transfer to grain (winter wheat and maize) and (iii) identifying the underlying factors causing alterations of TE phytoavailability. In both field experiments, receiving compliant or slightly high doses of OWP in compliance with regulations, OWP and soil physicochemical properties and TE concentrations in soils and grains were determined. In situ phytoavailability of TE was assessed at two juvenile crop growth stages by analyzing TE concentrations in shoot plantlets. Depending on the OWP input amount, results showed that compared to the soil receiving no organic amendment, repeated OWP inputs significantly increased soil organic carbon content, pH, cation exchange capacity, total soil Cu, Mo and Zn concentration and the phytoavailability of Mo, while the phytoavailability of Cd, Mn, Ni and Tl was significantly reduced. No notable effect was observed for Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn phytoavailability. Statistical approaches suggested that due to the repeated OWP applications, increased soil organic carbon content and pH, were likely responsible for decreased TE phytoavailability (e.g., Cd).

Publikacja to studium przypadku, jaki stanowi prefabrykowany dom jednorodzinny w technologii OWT/65 wzniesiony w Krakowie – Kurdwanowie w latach 1984–1988. Celem jest ukazanie, jak budowa i eksploatacja domu jednorodzinnego w systemie OWT spełniła zamierzenia oraz nadzieje projektantów. Metodami badań były analizy: systemu OWT, koncepcji domów prefabrykowanych w systemie OWT opracowanych przez Martę i Krzysztofa Woźniczkę w roku 1983, dokumentacji fotograficznej, projektów budowy i przebudowy badanego domu; oraz wywiad z Martą i Krzysztofem Woźniczką. W rezultacie badań określono, że dom w systemie OWT częściowo spełnił pokładane w nim nadzieje. Koszt jego wybudowania był niski, a stworzona forma i układ przestrzenny mogły być dostosowywane do zmieniających się potrzeb mieszkańców. Wadami koncepcji okazała się konieczność wykonania wielu, pierwotnie nieplanowanych, prac, które wydłużyły proces budowy i zwiększyły koszty realizacji. Niemniej badany dom mimo upływu lat dobrze spełnia swoją funkcję. Jest to zasługa możliwości modernizacji i dostosowywania obiektu do bieżących potrzeb.

The efficacy of the available genome-walking methods is restricted by low specificity, high background, or composite operations. We herein conceived bridging PCR, an efficient genome-walking approach. Three primers with random sequences, inner walker primer (IWP), bridging primer (BP), and outer walker primer (OWP), are involved in bridging PCR. The BP is fabricated by splicing OWP to the 5′-end of IWP’s 5′-part. A bridging PCR set is constituted by three rounds of amplification reactions, sequentially performed by IWP, BP plus OWP, and OWP, respectively pairing with three nested sequence-specific primers (SSP). A non-target product arising from IWP alone undergoes end-lengthening mediated by BP. This modified non-target product is a preferentially formed hairpin between the lengthened ends, instead of binding with shorter OWP. Meanwhile, a non-target product, triggered by SSP alone or SSP plus IWP, is removed by nested SSP. As a result, only the target DNA is accumulated. The efficacy of bridging PCR was validated by walking the gadA/R genes of Levilactobacillus brevis CD0817 and the hyg gene of rice.

The offshore wind turbine (OWT) tower is the important support of the whole wind turbine components, it is necessary to design and research the tower reasonably in order to ensure reliable operation of the OWT. In this paper, 3MW OWT tower is chosen as the object of study. A gas-liquid-solid model of the OWT tower and its external environment is built using COMSOL Multiphysics software. Combined with the two-phase flow theory of gas-liquid, loads of the tower under the coupling action of wind and wave are computed, which provides a new direction for the load analysis of the tower. The results calculated by this method are closer to the physical truth, which provides a more reliable basis for analyzing the fatigue life of the tower further.

The European Space Agency’s Copernicus satellites Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 provide observations with high spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution which can be used to monitor inland and coastal waters. Such waters are optically complex, and the water color may vary from completely clear to dark brown. The main factors influencing water color are colored dissolved organic matter, phytoplankton, and suspended sediments. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the use of the optical water type (OWT) classification in the remote sensing of ocean color. Such classification helps to clarify relationships between different properties inside a certain class and quantify variation between classes. In this study, we present a new OWT classification based on the in situ measurements of reflectance spectra for boreal region lakes and coastal areas without extreme optical conditions. This classification divides waters into five OWT (Clear, Moderate, Turbid, Very Turbid, and Brown) and shows that different OWTs have different remote sensing reflectance spectra and that each OWT is associated with a specific bio-optical condition. Developed OWTs are distinguishable by both the MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) and the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) sensors, and the accuracy of the OWT assignment was 95% for both the MSI and OLCI bands. To determine OWT from MSI images, we tested different atmospheric correction (AC) processors, namely ACOLITE, C2RCC, POLYMER, and Sen2Cor and for OLCI images, we tested AC processors ALTNNA, C2RCC, and L2. The C2RCC AC processor was the most accurate and reliable for use with MSI and OLCI images to estimate OWTs.

AbstractOrganic waste products (OWP) application to crop lands makes possible nutrients recycling. However, it can result in long-term accumulation of trace elements (TE) in soils. The present study aimed at (i) assessing the impact of regular applications of urban composts and manure on the TE contents of topsoils and crops in a long-term field experiment, (ii) comparing the TE mass balances with the stock variations of TE in soils, and (iii) proposing a prospective evaluation of this practice, based on estimated soil safe threshold values and simulations of soil TE accumulation for 100 years. In the long-term field experiment, physico-chemical properties and TE contents (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) have been measured in OWP, soils, plants and leaching waters for the period 1998–2015, and used for mass balance calculations and long-term simulations of TE accumulations. The composts of green wastes and sludge (GWS) and of municipal solid waste (MSW) were the OWP with the largest TE contents, while the farmyard manure tended to have the lowest. Repeated application of OWP led to significant accumulation of Zn and Cu in the topsoil layer (not for Cr, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb), especially with GWS, without overpassing calculated protective threshold values. No effect of repeated application of OWP has been observed on TE contents in grains (wheat, maize, barley). The positive mass balance has been dominated by the input flux of TE through OWP and resulted in the observed increases of soil stocks for Cu and Zn. Prospective simulation of soil content evolution until 2100 showed that soil content reached 0.4 mg Cd kg−1 soil (GWS, MSW), 38 mg Cu kg−1 soil (GWS) and 109 mg Zn kg−1 soil (GWS), which remained lower than protective threshold values.

Abstract Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are sensitive, dynamic structures that require accurate estimation of the natural frequency of the support structure. This requires an integrated analysis of the wind turbine structure, including a realistic representation of the foundation response. This paper studies how the natural frequency analysis is influenced by the soil-monopile interaction model following the PISA guidance. A case study of an instrumented OWT at a Belgian offshore wind farm is presented. Comparing results between the calculated and monitored natural frequencies clearly demonstrates that a realistic representation of the foundation stiffness is crucial for accurate calculation of the OWT dynamics. The integrated analysis of the OWT based on the calibrated foundation model yields very accurate results.

Traditional access for open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of posterior rib fractures occurs through either a posterior lateral thoracotomy or posterior paramedian approach. We report the case of severe blunt chest wall injury reconstruction using the novel implementation of an Opening Wedge Thoracostomy (OWT) approach. This approach is conventionally indicated for expansion thoracostomy in the surgical management of scoliosis. The OWT approach facilitates chest wall reconstruction vis-a-vis reflection of the trapezius and latissimus dorsi muscles providing excellent exposure of the posterior thoracic cage facilitating surgical reduction and fixation. Satisfactory stability of the posterior chest is not achievable using previously described approaches. OWT approach exposure for posterior thoracic reconstruction absents the surveyed literature.

Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT) is a device to extract and convert offshore wind energy into useful electrical power. The typical concept design of monopile foundation structure for 1.5MW OWT is raised in this paper. The arrangement of the monopile and related accessorial facilities are especially considered during design. Mechanical characters of the foundation structure are emphatically analyzed, including static analysis, dynamic analysis, fatigue analysis and bucking analysis. The time domain approach is preferable for the dynamic response of foundation under the condition of earthquake and wave. Based on the analysis results, the reliability of the structure is proved to be satisfied with the requirements .The paper provides the reference for the design of OWT.

In the Tibetan Plateau, due to lack of raw experimental data sets and proper data analysis method, investigations on atmosphere laser communication channel (ALCC), especially under rainy condition, are rarely concerned by researchers. Neural network group and optimal weight initialization technology (OWIT) are adopted in the analysis process. Firstly, construct neural network group according to different season’s conditions. Secondly, utilize existed raw data sets of ALCC under rainy condition to choose matching initial weight sets with OWIT. Thirdly, train neural network group until expected requirement is met. Finally, load rain data sets from the Tibetan Plateau (Lhasa for example) on trained neural network group to achieve the ultimate channel quality of ALCC. Actual results show that spring rain has the best quality of ALCC, followed by winter rain, summer rain and autumn rain.

Stochastic dynamic analysis of an offshore wind turbine (OWT) structure plays an important role in the structural safety evaluation and reliability assessment of the structure. In this paper, the OWT structure is simplified as a linear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system and the corresponding joint probability density function (PDF) of the dynamic response is calculated by the implementation of the path integration (PI) method. Filtered Gaussian white noise, which is obtained from the utilization of a second-order filter, is considered as horizontal wind excitation and used to excite the SDOF system. Thus, the SDOF model and the second-order linear filter model constitute a four-dimensional dynamic system. Further, a detailed three-dimensional finite element model is applied to obtain the natural frequency of the OWT and the efficient PI method, which is modified based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) convolution method, is also utilized to reduce the execution time to obtain the PDF of the response. Two important parameters of wind conditions, i.e., horizontal mean wind speed and turbulence standard deviation, are investigated to highlight the influences on the PDF of the dynamic response and the reliability of the OWT.

In recent years, Taiwan has firmly committed itself to pursue the green energy transition and a nuclear-free homeland by 2025, with an increase in renewable energy from 5% in 2016 to 20% in 2025. Offshore wind power (OWP) has become a sustainable and scalable renewable energy source in Taiwan. Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) is a fundamental tool to organize the use of the ocean space by different and often conflicting multi-users within ecologically sustainable boundaries in the marine environment. MSP is capable of definitively driving the use of offshore renewable energy. Lessons from Germany and the UK revealed that MSP was crucial to the development of OWP. This paper aims to evaluate how MSP is able to accommodate the exploitation of OWP in Taiwan and contribute to the achievement of marine policy by proposing a set of recommendations. It concludes that MSP is emerging as a solution to be considered by government institutions to optimize the multiple use of the ocean space, reduce conflicts and make use of the environmental and economic synergies generated by the joint deployment of OWP facilities and fishing or aquaculture activities for the conservation and protection of marine environments.

BACKGROUND: The wait time from cancer diagnosis to treatment has been a recent focus of cancer care in Canada.OBJECTIVE: To examine the trends in wait times from patient presentation to treatment (overall health system wait time [OWT]) for colorectal cancer (CRC).METHODS: Patients with colorectal adenocarcinomas, diagnosed between 2001 and 2005, and their first definitive treatments were identified from the population-based Manitoba Cancer Registry (Winnipeg, Manitoba). By linkage to Manitoba Health and Healthy Living’s administrative databases, a patient’s first gastrointestinal investigation (abdominal radiological imaging, lower gastrointestinal endoscopy or fecal occult blood test) before CRC diagnosis was identified. The index contact with the health care system was estimated from the date of the visit with the physician who ordered the first gastroenterological investigation. The OWT was defined as the time from the index contact to the first treatment, while diagnostic delay was defined as the time from the index contact to the diagnosis of CRC. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to determine independent predictors of OWT.RESULTS: The OWT was estimated for 2552 cases of CRC over the five years that were examined. The median OWT increased from 61 days in 2001 to 95 days in 2005 (P<0.001). Most of the increase was in diagnostic wait times (median of 44 days in 2001 versus 64 days in 2005 [P<0.001]). Year of diagnosis, older age, urban residence and diagnosis at a teaching facility were independent predictors of OWT.CONCLUSIONS: The OWT from presentation to treatment of CRC in Manitoba steadily increased between 2001 and 2005, mostly due to diagnostic delays.

The present study employs the power series method (PSM) to accurately predict the natural frequencies of eleven offshore wind turbines (OWT). This prediction is very important as it helps in the quick verification of experimental or finite element results. This study idealizes the OWT as a stepped Euler-Bernoulli beam carrying a top mass and connected at its bottom to a flexible foundation. The first part of the beam represents a monopile and the transition piece while its second part is a tower. The foundation is modeled using three springs (lateral, rotational, and cross-coupling springs). This work’s aim is at improving therefore the previous researches, in which the whole wind turbine was taken as a single beam, with a tower being tapered and its wall thickness being negligible compared to its diameter. In order to be closer to real-life OWT, three profiles of the tapered tower are explored: case 1 considers a tower with constant thickness along its height. Case 2 assumes a tower’s thickness being negligible compared to its mean diameter, while case 3 describes the tower as a tapered beam with varying thickness along its height. Next, the calculated natural frequencies are compared to those obtained from measurements. Results reveal that case 2, used by previous researches, was only accurate for OWT with tower wall thickness lower than 15 mm. Frequencies produced in case 3 are the most accurate as the relative error is up to 0.01%, especially for the OWT with thicknesses higher or equal to 15 mm. This case appears to be more realistic as, practically, wall thickness of a wind tower varies with its height. The tower-to-pile thickness ratio is an important design parameter as it highly has impact on the natural frequency of OWT, and must therefore be taken into account during the design as well as lateral and rotational coupling springs.

Objective: Opioids and the Workplace Prevention and Response (OWPR) Train-the-Trainer (TTT) and Leadership programs were piloted to improve trainees’ abilities to conduct opioid awareness training and to introduce policies and programs in their workplaces.Methods: The TTT (N = 54) and Leadership (N = 19) pilot trainees were administered voluntary pre- and post-training surveys and observed for discussion on knowledge and confidence regarding teaching and on workplace policies and workplace injury prevention related to opioids.Results: Percentage agreement with correct responses for all TTT and 10 out of 14 (71.4 percent) Leadership knowledge and confidence questions increased significantly from pre- to post-test.Conclusion: We found some evidence that the OWPR TTT and Leadership training programs and materials were effective in improving trainee's abilities to conduct opioid awareness training and to introduce policies and programs to address opioids and the workplace.

Periodontitis and overweight or obesity independently change serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, and C-reactive protein (CRP). The aim of this study is to investigate the alterations of serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, and CRP after nonsurgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) in Thai patients with overweight or obesity (Owt/Ob) who did or did not exhibit severe periodontitis (SP) and normal weight (Nwt) patients with or without SP. Two hundred sixty patients were screened; 29 patients were included in this study. The study participants comprised 6 patients with Owt/Ob who exhibited SP, 11 patients with Owt/Ob who did not exhibit SP, 5 Nwt patients with SP, and 7 Nwt patients without SP. Periodontal disease status was evaluated; serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, and CRP were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at baseline, as well as at 3 and 6 months after NSPT. At 3 months after NSPT, periodontal status was improved in all groups ( p < 0.05), except Nwt patients without SP. Serum levels of leptin and CRP were significantly reduced, while serum levels of adiponectin were elevated after NSPT, regardless of bodyweight or waist circumference ( p < 0.05). Improvement in serum levels of leptin after NSPT was also observed in the Nwt with SP group ( p = 0.015); these levels did not significantly differ in Nwt patients without SP. NSPT reduces serum levels of leptin and CRP and enhances serum levels of adiponectin in Thai patients with Owt/Ob, irrespective of periodontitis severity. These results suggest a role for periodontal treatment in the systemic inflammatory response of Thai people with Owt/Ob.

In June 2019, the Government of Canada implemented the Open work permit for vulnerable workers (OWP-V) policy, authorizing immigration officers to issue open work permits to migrant workers on employer-specific work permits if they demonstrate reasonable grounds to believe that they are experiencing abuse or are at risk of abuse in their workplace. Drawing on research conducted by a community organization on the impact of the policy, this article examines the policy’s potential to remedy the problematic effects of the employer-specific work permit and whether it has been implemented efficiently. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with organizations that provide direct legal and social support to migrant workers in Canada. Additionally, two datasets regarding the role of the OWP-V policy in IRCC’s employer compliance regime were analyzed. The research concludes that the OWP-V policy cannot be expected to counteract the high risk of abuse imposed on workers through the employer-specific work permit. Numerous barriers were identified that make it difficult for migrant workers to apply for the permit. The small number of OWP-V permits issued in proportion to the number of employers authorized to hire migrant workers makes it unlikely that the policy will significantly impact employers’ propensity to comply with the program conditions.

Many countries have increased the use of renewable energy and strongly promoted offshore wind power (OWP). However, OWP in Asia is in the preliminary stage of development, for which no precedents exist. The literature on wind energy generation has mostly investigated the causes of onshore wind turbine accidents and risk prevention, and more work on the risks associated with domestic OWP is required for energy market development. According to statistics on international wind power accidents, most offshore accidents occur in the construction and operation stages. Therefore, this work investigates risk management in the construction and operations of offshore windfarms in Taiwan. The goal is to help decision-makers to understand better the risks of the industry and so more effectively manage them. In this study, risk factors are identified from organizing data in the literature, and research methods and action strategies are developed. Research and analysis follow the risk management steps in the PMBOK® Guide (A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge). The risk rankings and preventive measures that are based on the results of this study can serve as references for relevant industry personnel in island cities and nearby Asian countries to reduce risk in the management of OWP projects.

Offshore wind power (OWP) has become a new emerging favorable renewable energy in Taiwan. Despite the fact that its development in Taiwan seems promising in the near future, it is facing some unwanted challenges recently, particularly the protests from fishers. The purpose of this paper is to understand jurisdiction over offshore areas in Taiwan via analyzing conflicts between OWP developers and fishers in Taiwan and finds that existing jurisdiction over the offshore areas in Taiwan seems to be not supportive to the development OWP. Jurisdiction among different acts is not consistent, and it is not administered by a specific agency. Most importantly, the Fisheries Act allows some specific people or groups to enjoy fishing rights as their property in rem in Taiwan’s offshore areas. To this end, the revision of the current Fisheries Act to set such rights as a privilege should be a must, but the government will need to pay a vast amount of money for doing so. Further, if a “one-shop” mechanism such as the Ocean Affairs Council would be adopted, the development of OWP and the addressing of disputes among different users, particularly with fishers, fishers’ associations, and cooperatives, would be more effective and promising.

Energy transition forcing a change in the structure of the electricity generation system is a particularly difficult task in countries such as Poland, where the dominant source of energy is fossil fuels. Due to the nature of renewable sources (stochastic and seasonally variable), it is necessary to study their impact on the power system. Much research was conducted on this subject. They consider modelling power systems in terms of dealing with an increasing amount of renewable energy sources, stabilization of electricity generation or environmental aspects. This article examines one of the key sources of future power systems—offshore wind turbines (OWT). The influence of offshore wind sources on the power system in the fields of stability of generation, methods of regulatory strategies, and economics were examined. One of the aspects that are less considered is the correlation of energy production in OWT with energy demand and with generation in other renewable energy sources, especially in the region of the southern Baltic Sea and the distribution of energy demand in countries such as Poland. The key aspect of the research is to fill this gap. The obtained results indicate that the average monthly power generation in OWT is strongly positively correlated with the demand, and the hourly average is positively correlated moderately. Correlation between generation in OWT and photovoltaic sources is very high negative, and between onshore and offshore wind turbines is highly positive. The study indicates that the OWT has a significant potential for the development and replacement of conventional sources, due to the very high capacity and a positive correlation with demand. Moreover, future offshore wind farms can cooperate with photovoltaic sources as these sources complement each other. On the other hand, a significant saturation of the system with offshore and onshore wind sources may pose a threat to the power system due to their positive correlation.

Abstract. To increase the contribution of offshore wind energy to the global energy mix in an economically sustainable manner, it is required to reduce the costs associated with the production and operation of offshore wind turbines (OWTs). One of the largest uncertainties and sources of conservatism in design and lifetime prediction for OWTs is the determination of the global damping level of the OWT. Estimation of OWT damping based on field measurement data has hence been subject to considerable research attention and is based on the use of (preferably operational) vibration data obtained from sensors mounted on the structure. As such, it is an output-only problem and can be addressed using state-of-the-art operational modal analysis (OMA) techniques, reviewed in this paper. The evolution of classical time- and frequency-domain OMA techniques has been reviewed; however, the literature shows that the OWT vibration data are often contaminated by rotor speed harmonics of significantly high energy located close to structural modes, which impede classical damping identification. Recent advances in OMA algorithms for known or unknown harmonic frequencies can be used to improve identification in such cases. Further, the transmissibility family of OMA algorithms is purported to be insensitive to harmonics. Based on this review, a classification of OMA algorithms is made according to a set of novel suitability criteria, such that the OMA technique appropriate to the specific OWT vibration measurement setup may be selected. Finally, based on this literature review, it has been identified that the most attractive future path for OWT damping estimation lies in the combination of uncertain non-stationary harmonic frequency measurements with statistical harmonic isolation to enhance classical OMA techniques, orthogonal removal of harmonics from measured vibration signals, and in the robustification of transmissibility-based techniques.

Background and Objective: The modernization of tongue diagnosis is an important research in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Accurate and practical tongue segmentation method is a premise in subsequent analyses. In this paper, an unsupervised tongue segmentation method is proposed based on an improved gPb-owt-ucm algorithm. The gPb-owt-ucm is short for global pixel point, oriented watershed transform and ultrametric contour map. Methods: Improved gPb-owt-ucm algorithm is adopted in this paper because of its powerful contour detection capabilities. The boundary feasibility of each pixel is calculated by the weight of pixel, and the result is converted to multiple closed regions and hierarchical tree. Finally, locating tongue accurate boundary by rectangular slider is taken to perform the final tongue segmentation. Two experiments are designed to evaluate its effectiveness by comparing with the snake method. Results: 300 tongue images were tested (150 images for the diabetes and 150 images for the health) in two experiments. The first one is to validate boundary detection performance (CBDR experiment). The second one is for validation of classification performance (CCE experiment) between diabetic and healthy tongues. In CBDR experiment, the mean and variance of IoU obtained using our improved gPb-owt-ucm method are 0.72±0.19, which are better than the snake method. In CCE experiment, the obtained precision and F1-score using our method are 1.0 and 0.97 over diabetic data respectively, and results of 0.94, 0.97 over health data. Conclusion: The effectiveness of our improved unsupervised gPb-owt-ucm method is validated in comparisons with the snake method. In the future, we plan to combine the proposed method with a supervised method in order to achieve more improvements for the tongue segmentation.

Ocean wave parameters (OWPs), including wave propagation direction (WPD), significant wave height (SWH), and main wave wavelength (MWW) can be typically retrieved using an interferometric imaging radar altimeter (InIRA). However, the inversion accuracy of ocean waves in Ku (15.8 GHz) and Ka (35.8 GHz) bands has not yet been evaluated due to the lack of field observation data. In this paper, to assess the inversion accuracy of OWPs in Ku and Ka bands, an airborne observation experiment using simultaneous Ku and Ka bands was carried out for the first time in Rizhao, Shandong Province, China. A dual-band InIRA (DInIRA) was configured with small incidence angles (4°–18°) and a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) buoy; a mobile weather station was placed at the intersection of the plane routes for validation. Afterward, the WPD, SWH, and MWW were retrieved based on the imaging of sea surface height. As compared with the field in situ data, the WPD inversion results of main wind wave were found to be consistent with the measurement environmental wind direction. The SWH inversion biases, retrieved by the Ku and Ka bands, were 0.38 m and 0.27 m; the MWW inversion biases for the swells were equal to 16.75 m and 3.67 m; and the MWW inversion biases about the wind waves were 2.32 m and 0.57 m. Ultimately, it was established that the OWPs could be effectively retrieved by the DInIRA, and the inversion accuracy of the SWH and the MWW in the Ka band outperformed that in the Ku band.
