I tend to associate the word “crossover” with popular music. I think of crossovers as being those artists whose music has successfully crossed over from a smaller market to a bigger one, like Mexican musicians making it big in the United States, or black musicians making it big with white audiences. And I frankly love the idea that I, as a librarian, might be able to make a curatorial crossover into a bigger market, much as Ricky Martin or Otis Redding made a musical crossover. Of course, I would have to address the two most common criticisms that are made . . .

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to share best practices in using e-portfolios for assessment including a collaborative model between academic department and library. Design/methodology/approach – The authors collaborated to develop learning outcome rubrics that were then used by faculty and a team of reviewers to evaluate evidence collected in e-portfolios. Findings – E-portfolios provide a dynamic platform to centrally collect assessment material; however, effective evaluation of student evidence can be strengthened with collaboration between college departments. Research limitations/implications – This is a model that was sustainable and practical for a small art and design college. Practical implications – Other institutions working on assessment with limited personal resources may find this approach useful in addition to any institution considering how to use e-portfolios for collection and assessment of student work. Originality/value – Otis College of Art and Design has been using e-portfolios since 2008 and has been developing this model of assessment for sometime.

Purpose This paper aims to present a case wherein a public archive intervenes in maintaining and preserving digital records (including underlying technological infrastructure) created by a private company to protect the trustworthiness of records, thereby helping the company to discharge their accountability. Design/methodology/approach This paper details the intervention of Tianjin Municipal Archives in the management of the records of Tianjin Otis Elevator Co., Ltd, the technical infrastructure that enables and supports such configuration, the issues encountered and the theoretical implications of this case. Findings This case suggests that not only does the concept of archives as a trusted third party remain relevant in the changing technological environment but also, in certain cases (e.g. wherein the supplier of evidentiary documents holds a monopoly over an industry), archives are becoming increasingly critical in maintaining the reliability and authenticity of digital records in the cloud environment. Research limitations/implications Given the challenges raised by the emerging cloud environment, it is vital to develop a renewed understanding of the concept of archives as a trusted third party, the relationship between archives and commercial third party services and the relationship between public archives and private records. Furthermore, this case identifies the need to re-examine archival methodologies to protect the authenticity of structured data. Originality/value This case exemplifies how archives can help private organizations address issues related to guaranteeing and demonstrating the evidential nature of digital records and provides empirical evidence for archives being conceptualized as a trusted third party in maintaining and preserving digital records.

Background Falls and fall-related fractures are highly prevalent among older people and are a major contributor to morbidity and costs to individuals and society. Only one small pilot trial has evaluated the effectiveness of a home hazard assessment and environmental modification in the UK. This trial reported a reduction in falls as a secondary outcome, and no economic evaluation was undertaken. Therefore, the results need to be confirmed and a cost-effectiveness analysis needs to be undertaken. Objective To determine the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a home hazard assessment and environmental modification delivered by occupational therapists for preventing falls among community-dwelling people aged ≥ 65 years who are at risk of falling, relative to usual care. Design This was a pragmatic, multicentre, modified cohort randomised controlled trial with an economic evaluation and a qualitative study. Setting Eight NHS trusts in primary and secondary care in England. Participants In total, 1331 participants were randomised (intervention group, n = 430; usual-care group, n = 901) via a secure, remote service. Blinding was not possible. Interventions All participants received a falls prevention leaflet and routine care from their general practitioner. The intervention group were additionally offered one home environmental assessment and modifications recommended or provided to identify and manage personal fall-related hazards, delivered by an occupational therapist. Main outcome measures The primary outcome was the number of falls per participant during the 12 months from randomisation. The secondary outcomes were the proportion of fallers and multiple fallers, time to fall, fear of falling, fracture rate, health-related quality of life and cost-effectiveness. Results The primary analysis included all 1331 randomised participants and indicated weak evidence of a difference in fall rate between the two groups, with an increase in the intervention group relative to usual care (adjusted incidence rate ratio 1.17, 95% confidence interval 0.99 to 1.38; p = 0.07). A similar proportion of participants in the intervention group (57.0%) and the usual-care group (56.2%) reported at least one fall over 12 months. There were no differences in any of the secondary outcomes. The base-case cost-effectiveness analysis from an NHS and Personal Social Services perspective found that, on average per participant, the intervention was associated with additional costs (£18.78, 95% confidence interval £16.33 to £21.24), but was less effective (mean quality-adjusted life-year loss –0.0042, 95% confidence interval –0.0041 to –0.0043). Sensitivity analyses demonstrated uncertainty in these findings. No serious, related adverse events were reported. The intervention was largely delivered as intended, but recommendations were followed to a varying degree. Limitations Outcome data were self-reported by participants, which may have led to inaccuracies in the reported falls data. Conclusions We found no evidence that an occupational therapist-delivered home assessment and modification reduced falls in this population of community-dwelling participants aged ≥ 65 years deemed at risk of falling. The intervention was more expensive and less effective than usual care, and therefore it does not provide a cost-effective alternative to usual care. Future work An evaluation of falls prevention advice in a higher-risk population, perhaps those previously hospitalised for a fall, or given by other professional staff could be justified. The process of the revision in libraries is defined by the Law on Library and Information Activities and the Rulebook on Inventory, Processing, Revision and Write-Off of Library and Information Materials and Sources. The revision of the fund in libraries on the one hand is a legal obligation and on the other hand gives a precise insight into the state of the fund, contributes to its relevance, opens such a valuable space for new publications. The paper presents the experiences gained during the work on the automated revision of the holdings of the Public Library of Užice in the new Cobiss environment. They can be use by libraries that will revision their funds in this way in the coming period. The aim of this paper is to offer ways to resolve dilemmas and doubts that may arise in certain phases of the automated revision process. Thanks to the benefits of the new Cobiss / Inventory environment, this revision is the most thorough to date and most accurately reflects the state of the fund.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the provision, functionality and accessibility of School Libraries in public secondary schools in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria.Methodology: A qualitative research method was adopted. Evidence was gathered through semi-structured interviews with principals, staff members, teachers in charge of the library, as well as students in all the 17 public schools being investigated. A Local Inspector of Education was also interviewed at Okuku, the headquarters of the Local Government are, who gave further insight into the issues and challenges faced by public school libraries. Observations were made and recorded on a checklist as to how the libraries in schools visited were resourced and laid out. The checklist was created according to the resources one would expect to find in a well-resourced library as described in the literature. It was used to indicate the type of resources available in the library. No attempt was made to count the number of resources that were available; it was only used to determine if the resource was present. All the seventeen (17) public secondary schools in Local Government were visited and data was collected over a period of one month in 2017. Data collected was analysed using frequency counts and simple percentages. The findings were presented tabulated according to the research objectives.Findings: The study revealed that school libraries are not provided in most schools in Odo-Otin Local Government Area. It also revealed that the few libraries that existed are majorly housed in converted classrooms, with no certified professional staff, inadequate furniture, and grossly inadequate information resources; and that accessibility to the few libraries that exist depends on the staff members that equally use them as their staff rooms. It also revealed that two schools in the Odo-Otin had benefited from Federal Government of Nigeria’s SchoolUnique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study revealed that a tier of Government in the Country is not fully implementing the National Policy on Education (2004); and that the learning environment in public secondary schools in Odo-otin is breach of Nigeria constitution on right to quality education.

Purpose: The main objective of this study was to explore the influence of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) on hotel revenue and distribution strategies. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings revealed that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to the influence of Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) on hotel revenue and distribution strategies. Preliminary empirical review revealed that as the digital landscape continues to evolve, hotels must adapt their strategies to harness the benefits of OTAs while effectively managing the challenges. The findings of this research will benefit hoteliers, industry regulators, policymakers, and researchers by providing valuable insights into navigating the evolving landscape of hotel distribution and revenue management in the digital age. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Agency theory, Transaction Cost theory and the Resource Based View (RBV) theory may be used to anchor future studies relating to Online Travel Agencies (OTA). The study recommended diversification of distribution channels, negotiation of favorable contracts with OTAs, leveraging guest data for personalization, investing in direct booking campaigns and monitoring and adaption to market trends.

In this paper, we propose a fully standard-cell-based common-mode feedback (CMFB) loop with an explicit voltage reference to improve the CMRR of pseudo-differential standard-cell-based amplifiers and to stabilize the dc output voltage. This latter feature allows robust biasing of operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) based on a cascade of such stages. A detailed analysis of the CMFB is reported to both provide insight into circuit behavior and to derive useful design guidelines. The proposed CMFB is then exploited to build a fully standard-cell OTA suitable for automatic place and route. Simulation results referring to the standard-cell library of a commercial 130 nm CMOS process illustrated a differential gain of 28.3 dB with a gain-bandwidth product of 15.4 MHz when driving a 1.5 pF load capacitance. The OTA exhibits good robustness under PVT and mismatch variations and achieves state-of-the-art FOMs also thanks to the limited area footprint.

Wikipedian-in-Residence (WIR) programs are becoming more common in academic libraries. Although they hold a great deal of promise, they are often limited in scope given their frequently short-term and sometimes part-time nature. After a successful one-year, part-time WIR pilot, the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) has piloted a one-year, full-time Open Technology Specialist (OTS) role to build upon the WIR’s accomplishments and allow for a more comprehensive approach to Wikimedia activities in the library. Through extensive research, outreach, and relationship-building, the OTS has considerably expanded the scope of WIR’s activities to advance a wide range of institutional strategic priorities for the long term. In line with UTL’s commitment to barrier-free access to all of the right information, the OTS incorporates Wikimedia activities into existing workflows across the library system in ways that prioritize support for historically excluded communities and collections while being sensitive to issues of access and description. In its pilot year, the OTS has created a network out of previously isolated Wikimedia engagement across the library system, trained staff, and volunteers across and beyond UTL, and helped launch formal projects that deepen institutional engagement. The OTS has also continued to contribute to Wikipedia, expanding their editing scope to the appropriate use of archival sources and the development of tools, which help bridge the gap between Wikipedia and Wikidata. Through the OTS, UTL has systematically deepened its contributions to the open Web. The UTL OTS pilot experience has demonstrated that positions dedicated to engagement in Wikimedia or other open technologies hold a great deal of potential and are worthy of further consideration for ongoing investment of staff and budget resources by academic libraries.

The earth’s surface supports living organisms and their environments to form the biosphere, a thin film of life around the planet. Organisms participate in interacting systems or communities, and these communities are coupled to their environments by the transfer of matter and energy and by movements of air, water, and organisms. Human activities in Monteverde and elsewhere can drastically alter forest ecosystems. Textbooks on ecosystem ecology typically include such topics as community structure and composition (including plant growth forms, vertical structure, niche space, species diversity), communities and environments (species distributions along environmental gradients, community classification, succession), production (food chains and webs, decomposition and detritus, photosynthesis), and nutrient cycling (mineral nutrition of organisms, soil development, biogeochemistry). Our understanding of tropical ecosystem ecology generally falls short of what we know of other aspects of tropical biology. There are far more studies concerning population biology, autecology, and life history of tropical organisms than nutrient cycling, productivity, and landscape ecology. This pattern is true in Monteverde and in such well-studied tropical forests as La Selva, Barro Colorado Island (BCI), and the Luquillo National Forest (Lugo and Lowe 1995, McDade et al. 1994). Logistical blocks to ecosystem research exist because collaborating teams of scientists are typically needed to tackle the multiple disciplines that ecosystem-level questions require, which demands a large infrastructure and budget. Temporal problems exist because ecosystem-level phenomena (e.g., tree mortality and forest regeneration) may involve time scales longer than the life of a single granting period or lifetime of a researcher. A strong academic base for ecosystem ecology is lacking because the pool of existing studies is too small to draw patterns and extrapolate trends. These obstacles have not often been overcome in Monteverde. No Monteverde institution has provided the infrastructure to support ecosystem research (e.g., laboratory facilities, meteorological station, technical library). Some community members have negative feelings about experimental manipulations and destructive sampling sometimes needed to answer ecosystem ecology questions. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) courses were in Monteverde and in such well-studied tropical forests as La Selva, Barro Colorado Island (BCI), and the Luquillo National Forest (Lugo and Lowe 1995, McDade et al. 1994).
