AbstractThere is controversy in the literature concerning whether or not neurons in the cat's posteromedial lateral suprasylvian (PMLS) visual cortex are orientation selective. Previous studies that have tested cells with simple bar stimuli have found that few, if any, PMLS cells are orientation selective. Conversely, studies that have used repetitive stimuli such as gratings have found that most or all PMLS cells are orientation selective. It is not known whether this difference in results is due to the stimuli used or the laboratories using them. The present experiments were designed to answer this question by testing individual PMLS neurons for orientation sensitivity with both bar and grating stimuli. Using quantitative response measures, we found that most PMLS neurons respond well enough to stationary flashed stimuli to use such stimuli to test for orientation sensitivity. On the basis of these tests, we found that about 85% of the cells with well-defined receptive fields are orientation sensitive to flashed gratings, and a similar percentage are orientation sensitive to flashed bars. About 80% of the cells were orientation sensitive to both types of stimuli. The preferred orientations typically were similar for the two tests, and they were orthogonal to the preferred direction of movement. The strength of the orientation sensitivity (measured as the ratio of discharge to the preferred and nonpreferred orientations) was similar to both types of stimuli. However, the width of the orientation tuning curves was systematically broader to bars than to gratings. Several hypotheses are considered as to why previous studies using bars failed to find evidence for orientation sensitivity. In addition, a mechanism for the difference in orientation tuning to bars and gratings is suggested.

One-month-old infants were tested with a habituation—recovery paradigm to determine whether they could discriminate phase-shifting grating patterns that switched between two orientations, three or eight times a second, from grating patterns that only shifted in phase. The infants were found to discriminate patterns switching orientation at the lower temporal rate of 3 reversals s−1, but not 8 reversals s−1. This finding supports the idea that orientation-selective mechanisms improve in their temporal sensitivity during early infancy. Where they can be compared, the results from behavioural and electrophysiological studies agree as to the course of this development.

This paper presents data on CIELAB chromatic contrast sensitivity collected in a psychophysical experiment. To complement previously published data in the low-frequency range, we selected five spatial frequencies in the range from 2.4 to 19.1 cycles per degree (cpd). A Gabor stimulus was modulated along six chromatic directions in the a*-b* plane. We also investigated the impact on contrast sensitivity from spatial orientations – both vertically and diagonally oriented stimuli were used. The analysis of the collected data showed lowest contrast sensitivity in the chromatic direction of around 120° from the positive a*-axis. The contrast sensitivity in the diagonal spatial orientation is slightly lower when compared to the vertical orientation.

This work is devoted to general laws influence the orientation of the samples in an external magnetic field on the magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of three-layer film systems based on Со / n / Со (where n is intermediate layer of Gd, Dy and Bi). Found that the field dependence has anisotropic character, and most important magnetoresistance is observed in the perpendicular geometry measurement for all three-layer film systems. It is shown that the value of the coercive force and magnetoresistance decreases and the value of film sensitivity to the magnetic field increases in the transition from perpendicular to the transverse geometry. The volume, produced within the framework of the COMMIT project “Fostering the Integration of Resettled Refugees in Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Spain”, concerns the current European situation, and in particular the teaching of L2 in its relations and interdisciplinary exchanges with other scientific fields dealing with migratory phenomena; therefore, starting from the COMMIT experience, it offers a wide perspective, going beyond the borders of the countries involved in the project and identifying good practices that can be replicated in different territorial and social contexts to ensure successful social inclusion of newly arrived citizens. COMMIT is a project funded by the European Commission (DG HOME), co-financed by the Ministry of Interior and the Project Partners and managed by the Mediterranean Coordination Office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in Italy. The project was implemented in collaboration with the IOM Missions in Croatia, Portugal and Spain, together with the Communitas Consortium, the Adecco Foundation for Equal Opportunities and the University for Foreigners of Siena (UNISTRASI). The project activities were implemented from 1 January 2019 to 30 April 2021. The project, based on the idea that successful integration of resettled refugees occurs both by putting in place certain structural conditions and by promoting mutual exchange between resettled refugees and their host communities, aimed to support their integration into their new communities, with a special focus on women and young refugees as particularly vulnerable groups. A secure humanitarian migration route to the European Union launched in 2013 is targeted at refugees who are beneficiaries of resettlement. Several Member States, including Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Spain, have therefore established or strengthened their national resettlement and humanitarian admission programmes for resettled refugees of Syrian, Eritrean, Ethiopian or Sudanese origin. In preparation for resettlement, beneficiaries participate in a series of pre-departure cultural orientation activities. Among them, training in L2 language and culture plays a crucial role. The book hence tries to offer answers to the many challenges that characterise the field of language education in contexts marked by the presence of migrants from an interdisciplinary perspective. It provides for effective solutions for an inclusive language education, attentive to ‘vulnerable’ subjects, paying attention to the interweaving of complex individual, social, cultural and economic contexts, such as school and university training courses and reception and resettlement programmes in host societies. In particular, the current situation in Italy, regarding both teaching L2 in a school context and teaching modern languages to adult foreigners, is still lacking in interdisciplinary relations and exchanges between language teaching and other scientific fields dealing with migratory phenomena. However, in recent years a particular sensitivity and empathy towards linguistic and cultural contact have developed.

The chapter explains the leading ideas of Charles Travis in relation to three main topics and offers first-pass responses to some general objections to Travis’s general philosophical orientation to the topics. Firstly, regarding linguistic meaning, it is argued that occasion-sensitivity poses a novel set of problems for standard construals of truth-conditional semantics. Secondly, regarding the structure of thought, it is explained how much the same issues arise for thought as they do for language. Thirdly, regarding perception, Travis’s distinctive flavour of disjunctivism is explained. The chapter also seeks to situate Travis’s thought in relation to Wittgenstein and more contemporary thinkers such as Jerry Fodor.

It is widely affirmed that human beings have irreplaceable valuable, and that we owe it to them to treat them accordingly. Many theorists have been drawn to Kantianism because they think that it alone can capture this intuition. One aim of this paper is to show that this is a mistake, and that Kantianism cannot provide an independent rational vindication, nor even a fully illuminating articulation, of irreplaceability. A further aim is to outline a broadly Aristotelian view that provides a more fitting theoretical framework for this appealing conception of human value. The critique of Kantianism is extended to contemporary theorists with a broadly Kantian orientation. The paper closes with an outline of a virtue-theoretic ethical theory that follows Aquinas in taking love to be a master virtue—one that refines the other virtues so as to provide a continuous practical sensitivity to the irreplaceable value of fellow human beings.

This chapter examines the “who” of support for women’s ordination: who supports and who opposes female clergy in their congregations? It examines the nationwide Gender and Religious Representation Survey to uncover which factors are associated with support and which with opposition, paying special attention to things like personal demographics, religious behavior and attitudes, congregational context, and political orientations. The results show that support for female ordination is much more a function of congregational context and religious and political orientations than it is of demographics, most notably gender. Political and theological liberals as well as those currently attending congregations that admit female clergy support women’s ordination regardless of whether they are male or female. Also, those who have lower levels of sensitivity to “sanctity/purity” moral reasoning are more supportive of women’s ordination.

Static and dynamic performance test results are provided for a three-lobe bearing evaluated over the following range of radial static-load orientations (taken from the leading edge of the loaded pad): 0°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 80°, 90°, and 100°. Static and dynamic test results are evaluated to determine the sensitivity of the bearing to changes in the static load direction. The bearing has the following specifications: 100o arc angle, 0.52 preload, 70% offset, 101.74 mm minimum bore diameter, 0.116 mm radial pad clearance, and 76.3 mm axial length. The bearing is tested at 6750 rpm, 9000 rpm, 10800 rpm, and 13200 rpm, and at five different unit loads. Static measurements include hot and cold clearances, static eccentricities, and pad metal temperatures. Dynamic results include stiffness coefficients, damping coefficients, and whirl-frequency ratios (WFRs). Dynamic tests show that the three-lobe bearing is very sensitive to load orientation at low speeds and high loads. Kxx is highest for the 80°, 90°, and 100° load orientations. Kyy is highest for the 20°, 30°, and 40° load orientations. Kxy is highest for the 80°, 90°, and 100° load orientations. The magnitude of Kyx is highest for the 0° and 20° load orientations. Cxx is largest for the 80°, 90°, and 100° load orientations, and Cyy is largest for the 0°, 20°, 30°, and 40° load orientations. In terms of WFRs, it is generally dynamically advantageous to orient the static load vector for this bearing towards the leading edge of the pad. WFRs at 6750 rpm with loads of 1149 kPa, 1723 kPa, and 2298 kPa are equal to zero when the static load vector is pointed towards the leading edge of the pad and between 0.25 and 0.5 when the static load vector points towards the trailing edge of the pad. The bearing is not sensitive to load orientation at high speeds and light loads. At 13200 rpm, measured WFRs are between 0.2 and 0.6 at all loads and for all load orientations. Measured WFRs at the no-load condition are approximately 0.5 at all speeds. Static data showed that the 30° and 90° load orientations yielded slightly higher measured maximum pad-metal-temperature increases at each speed relative to the other load orientations. At the highest static-load magnitudes, the pad metal temperatures are not as dependent on load orientation.
