La présente étude concerne le domaine des systèmes de transmission par fibres optiques et plus particulièrement l’impact des différentes techniques de filtrage (optiques) sur les performances des systèmes de transmission optiques (métro, accès). En réception, ces systèmes présentent un filtre étroit, qui permet de filtrer le signal sans avoir à traiter le bruit dans la liaison. On considère généralement que l'étroitesse du filtre de réception est indispensable au bon fonctionnement d'une liaison sans répéteurs, et que la sensibilité de la liaison est d'autant plus grande que la largeur du filtre est proche de la limite théorique que constitue la largeur du spectre du signal émis. L'utilisation de tels filtres présente des contraintes. D'une part, les filtres présentent des pentes raides, et sont coûteux. D'autre part, un décalage de la longueur d'onde de l'émetteur est toujours possible, de sorte que la plupart des récepteurs comprennent des filtres de réception dont la longueur d'onde est asservie sur la longueur d'onde de l'émetteur. Pour un système de transmission à multiplexage en longueurs d'onde WDM, dans lequel plusieurs longueurs d'ondes distinctes peuvent être utilisées, ceci permet d’augmenter la capacité d’information transmise, mais pose cependant de réelles contraintes telle que la diaphonie entre voies. Les canaux sont multiplexés dans la même fibre puis filtrés à la réception par un filtre optique qui sert à la fois au démultiplexage des canaux et à un éventuel filtrage optique dans le spectre du canal étudié. Le filtre optique aura des paramètres variables : forme, bande passante, et longueur d’onde centrale, ensuite le canal ainsi filtré sera analysé par le récepteur. Ce dernier comprend une photodiode suivie d’un filtre électrique de la forme de la fonction de filtrage de type de Bessel d’ordre 5. La qualité de l’information sera évaluée, par le taux d’erreur binaire TEB. Dans ce travail de thèse nous proposons une analyse de l’impact des paramètres fondamentaux des filtres sur les performances d’une liaison par la simulation système
This study relates to the field of optical transmission systems fibers and more particularly the impact of different filtering techniques (optical) on the performance of optical transmission systems (metro access). Reception, these systems have a narrow filter, which filters the signal without having to deal with the noise in the link. It is generally considered that the narrowness of the receiving filter is indispensable for the proper functioning of a link without repeaters, and the sensitivity of the link is even greater than the width of the filter is close to the theoretical limit that is the spectrum width of the transmitted signal. The use of such filters has constraints. Firstly, the filters have steep slopes, and are expensive. On the other hand, a shift of the wavelength of the emitter length is always possible, so that most of the receivers comprise receiving filters whose wavelength is locked to the wavelength of the transmitter. For a transmission system with wavelength multiplexing, wherein plural different wavelengths may be used, this allows to increase the capacity of information transmitted, but however poses real constraints such that crosstalk between channels. The channels are multiplexed in the same fiber and filtered upon receipt by an optical filter which is used both in the channels and demultiplexing a possible optical filter in the spectrum of the considered channel. The optical filter has variable parameters: shape, bandwidth, and center wavelength, then the channel will be filtered and analyzed by the receiver. It includes a photodiode followed by an electrical filter of the form of the filter function of order Bessel type 5. Quality information will be evaluated by the bit error rate BER.In this thesis we propose to analyze the impact of the fundamental parameters of the filters on the performance of an optical system

This thesis analyzes the problem of design analog fiber optic link for transmission high frequency signals. Analog fiber optic link will be used in system for detection and localization a partial discharge activity MOSAD-PD-UHF, where will replace existing solution with coaxial cables, which is not appropriate for highly noise environment. MOSAD-PD-UHF system is developed in department of theoretical and experimental electrical engineering. At the first, MOSAD-PD-UHF system and individual parts of optical chain are theoretical described. In following part are compared a few commercially available analog fiber optic link and design of chosen transmit and receive module are described. . The thesis final part deals with construction of optical link and measured parameters are discussed.

In just over a decade the optical frequency comb technique has completely transformed the field of frequency metrology. These devices have made the measurement of the frequency of light a much easier and affordable task when compared to with earlier techniques. With both research and technology development on these devices becoming more mature, optical frequency combs have been affecting other science areas. Applications are already found in spectroscopy, attosecond physics and astrophysics and more science and engineering areas can be expected to be affected in the near future. The dissemination over optical fibre of optical frequency combs between research labs, or between research labs and industry, could facilitate and accelerate this process. In particular, with optical frequency standards currently exhibiting a fractional accuracy better than 10^-17 and optical frequency combs making this accuracy available across a wide spectrum, new experiments could be devised in a wide range of research fields if ultra accurate microwave and optical frequencies were to be made available beyond the walls of metrology laboratories. However, before the work presented in this thesis, limited research was undertaken to test how accurately an optical frequency comb could be transferred over optical fibre. Environmentally-induced noise in the fibre, dispersion issues and other processes taking place during the propagation and detection of the optical signal could all degrade its quality to a level incompatible with the desired applications. The experiments described here demonstrate that optical frequency combs can be disseminated over optical links, from several-km to many tens of km-long, whilst preserving the stability and accuracy of its mode frequency spacing and mode frequency to a level compatible with the majority of the most demanding frequency metrology applications.

Fiber-optic networks are continually evolving to accommodate the ever increasing data rates demanded by modern applications and devices. The current state-of-the art systems are being deployed with 100 Gb/s rates per wavelength while maintaining the 50 GHz channel spacing established for 10 Gb/s dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems. Phase modulation formats (in particular quadrature phase shift keying - QPSK) are necessary to meet the spectral efficiency (SE) requirements of the application. The main challenge for phase modulated optical systems is fiber nonlinearities, where changes in intensity of the combined optical signal result in changes to the fiber's refractive index. Limiting launch power is the primary means to avoid dramatic intensity fluctuations, a strategy which in turn limits the available signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) within the channel. Continuous phase modulation (CPM) is a format in which data is encoded in the phase, while the amplitude is constant throughout all transmission (even during transitions between symbols). With the goal of reducing the impact of nonlinearities, the purpose of this research was to identify a set of CPM signals best suited for high speed fiber-optic transmission, and quantify their performance against other formats. The secondary goal was to identify techniques appropriate for demodulation of high speed fiber-optic systems and implement them for simulation and experimental research. CPM encompasses a number of variable parameters that combine to form an infinite number of unique schemes, each of which is characterized by its own SE, minimum distance, and implementation complexity. A method for computing minimum distance of DWDM-filtered CPM formats is presented and utilized to narrow down to a range of candidate schemes. A novel transmitter design is presented for CPM signal generation, as well as a number of novel reception techniques to achieve proper demodulation of the CPM signal from the coherent optical receiver. Using these methods, the identified range of candidate schemes was compared in simulation to the conventional QPSK format, showing that some modest gain can be expected from CPM. Through these and other simulations, it is revealed that fiber nonlinearities depend on the aggregate sum of all wavelengths rather than the imposition of each separate carrier on its neighbors. Therefore the constant envelope of CPM does not directly impact the nonlinearities since multiple carriers will photonically interfere and result in intensity fluctuations regardless of modulation format. Additionally, dispersive effects in fiber decompose the underlying channels so that the intensity throughout propagation is nearly Gaussian distributed, regardless of format. The benefits gained from CPM are thus limited to schemes that attain a higher minimum distance than alternative formats (in the given channel passband), and for optically compensated links in which low dispersion is maintained throughout the fiber link.

Dans ce travail, nous avons étudié un système complet d'antennes distribuées par voie optique pour déport de signaux radio suivant le principe de la radio sur fibre. La caractérisation du lien optique servant de base au système radio sur fibre, d'un point de vue composant et système via la transmission de standards radio a d'abord été effectuée. Nous avons montré par une nouvelle technique de caractérisation que l'élément non linéaire de notre chaîne de transmission pouvait se comporter de manière plus linéaire qu'attendue et faiblement impacter les standards radio transmis. Les standards choisis sont à enveloppe constante (GSM) et à enveloppe non constante (WLAN) pour mieux mettre en évidence les non-linéarités de la chaîne de transmission. Il est ainsi montré que les signaux à enveloppe non constante sont les signaux limitants et qu'en leur adjoignant un signal à enveloppe constante à faible puissance, la qualité de leur transmission n'est pas impactée. A partir de ces résultats expérimentaux, un algorithme de calcul de couvertures radio a été développé et appliqué à plusieurs scénarios de couverture intra-bâtiment. Notre étude montre que dans tous les cas, c'est la liaison montante, de l'utilisateur à la station centrale, qui est limitante puisque bien plus impactée par le bruit ajouté par la chaîne de transmission optique. Par suite, nous avons proposé une architecture de déploiement réseau originale de type bus pour laquelle nous montrons que malgré un coût de déploiement faible, il est possible d'atteindre des performances suffisantes pour assurer des couvertures au sein d'un réseau domestique. Enfin, ces résultats de simulation sur architecture bus sont confirmés par la réalisation d'un banc de test de type industriel permettant de confirmer par la mesure les résultats obtenus précédemment. Nous réalisons aussi un circuit radio passif permettant la séparation et recombination de plusieurs signaux (GSM et WLAN étudiés précédemment) de sorte que tous les éléments prouvant la réalisation et les mesures sur le système complet d'antennes distribuées sont à disposition et fonctionnels.

In this thesis, the theoretical models describing the physical origins of differential group delay (DGD) are presented, and methods of measuring the DGD process are discussed. Three measurement methods are evaluated for their practical usefulness (Jones matrix eigen-analysis, wave-length-scanning and interferometric techniques). Characterization based on measurements of the mean and correlation coefficients of the DGD process with respect to time, wave-length/frequency and temperature are made using the Jones matrix eigen-analysis method. A comparison between the measurements and numerical simulations based on the physical models of the origins of PMD are made. Measurements of the DGD of a system's components and the overall system are made to validate the theoretical models we have that describe how component DGD relates to the overall system DGD. The results of the measurement agree with the theoretical models that the DGD is described by a Maxwellian distribution, and support the cascaded link rule for predicting the system DGD; the correlation bandwidth measurement is seen to agree with the findings of the numerical simulations. This thesis describes an optical fibre network that uses a bus topology and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). Various potential configurations are analysed and compared and it is shown that a serious limitation of optical CDMA schemes using incoherent correlators is the effect of optical beating due to the presence of multiple incoherent optical signals at the receiver photodiode. The network proposed and analysed in this thesis avoids beating between multiple optical fields because it only uses a single, shared, optical source. It does this through the SLIM (Single Light-source with In-line Modulation) configuration in which there is a continuously-operating light source at the head-end of a folded bus, and modulators at the nodes to impose signals on the optical field in the form of pulses of darkness which propagate along the otherwise continuously bright bus. Optical CDMA can use optical-fibre delay-line correlators as matched filters, and these may be operated either coherently or incoherently.Coherent operation is significantly more complex than incoherent operation, but incoherent correlators introduce further beating even in a SLIM network. A new design of optical delay-line correlator, the hybrid correlator, is therefore proposed, analysed and demonstrated. It is shown to eliminate beating. A model of a complete network predicts that a SLIMbus using optical CDMA with hybrid correlators can be operated at TeraBaud rates with the number of simultaneous users limited by multiple access interference (MAI), determined only by the combinatorics of the code set.

Avec la croissance forte de ces dernières années des objets connectés les technologies de communication optique et radio voient davantage d’opportunités de s’associer et se combiner dans des technologies bas-couts Photoniques-Microondes (MWP). Les réseaux domestiques en sont un exemple. La bande millimétrique notamment, de 57GHz à 67GHz, est utilisé pour contenir les exigences des communications sans fils très haut-débit, néanmoins, la couverture de ces systèmes wireless est limitée en intérieur (indoor) essentiellement à une seule pièce, à la fois du fait de l’atténuation forte de l’atmosphère dans cette bande de fréquence, mais aussi de fait de l’absorption et de la réflexion des murs. Ainsi il nécessaire de déployer une infrastructure pour diffuser l’information au travers d’un système d’antennes distribuées. Les technologiques optiques et photoniques-microondes sont une des solutions envisagées. Les technologies MWP se sont également étendues et couvrent une gamme très large d’applications incluant les communications mobiles 5G, les analyses biomédicales, les communications courtes-distances (datacom), le traitement de signal par voie optique et les interconnexions dans les véhicules et aéronefs. Beaucoup de ces applications requièrent de la rapidité, de la bande-passante et une grande dynamique à la fois, en même temps de demander des dispositifs compacts, légers et à faible consommation. Le cout d’implémentation est de plus un critère essentiel à leur déploiement, en particulier dans l’environnement domestique ainsi que dans d’autres applications variées des technologies MWP.Ce travail de thèse vise ainsi le développement de composants photonique-microondes (MPW) intégrés en technologie BiCMOS ou Bipolaire SiGe/Si, à très bas coût, incluant les phototransistors bipolaires à hétérojonctions (HPT) SiGe/Si, les Diodes Electro-Luminescentes (LED) Si et SiGe, ainsi que l’intégration combinées des composants optoélectroniques et microondes, pour l’ensemble des applications impliquant des courtes longueurs d’ondes (de 750nm à 950nm typiquement).Ces travaux se concentrent ainsi sur les points suivants :La meilleure compréhension de phototransistors SiGe/Si latéraux et verticaux conçus dans une technologie HBT SiGe 80GHz de Telefunken GmbH. Nous traçons des conclusions sur les performances optimales du phototransistor. Les effets de photodétection du substrat et de la dispersion spatiale des flux de porteurs sont analysés expérimentalement. Cette étude aide à développer des règles de dessin pour améliorer les performances fréquentielles du phototransistor HPT pour les applications visées.Dans l’objectif de développer de futures interconnexions intra- et inter- puces, nous concevons des lignes de transmissions faibles-pertes et des guides d’ondes optiques polymères sur Silicium faible résistivité. Il s’agit d’une étape afin d’envisager des plateformes Silicium dans lesquelles les HPT SiGe pourront potentiellement être intégrés de manière performante à très bas coût avec d’autres structures telles que des lasers à émission par la surface (VCSEL), afin de construire un transpondeur optique complet sur une interface Silicium. Le polymère est utilisé comme une interface diélectrique entre les lignes de transmission et le substrat, pour les interconnexions électriques, et pour définir le gain du guide d’onde optique dans les interconnexions optiques.La conception, la fabrication et la caractérisation du premier lien photonique-microonde sur puce Silicium sont menées en se basant sur la même technologie HBT SiGe 80GHz de Telefunken dans la gamme de longueur d’onde 0,65µm-0,85µm. Ce lien optique complétement intégré combine des LEDS Silicium en régime d’avalanche (Si Av LED), des guides d’ondes optiques Nitrure et Silice ainsi qu’un phototransistor SiGe. Un tel dispositif pourrait permettre d’accueillir à l’avenir des communications sur-puce, de systèmes micro-fluidiques et des applications d’analyse biochimiques
With the recent explosive growth of connected objects, for example in Home Area Networks, the wireless and optical communication technologies see more opportunity to merge with low cost MicroWave Photonic (MWP) technologies. Millimeter frequency band from 57GHz to 67GHz is used to accommodate the very high speed wireless data communication requirements. However, the coverage distance of these wireless systems is limited to few meters (10m). The propagation is then limiting to a single room mostly, due to both the high propagation attenuation of signals in this frequency range and to the wall absorption and reflections. Therefore, an infrastructure is needed to lead the signal to the distributed antennas configuration through MWP technology. Moreover, MWP technology has recently extended to address a considerable number of novel applications including 5G mobile communication, biomedical analysis, Datacom, optical signal processing and for interconnection in vehicles and airplanes. Many of these application areas also demand high speed, bandwidth and dynamic range at the same time they require devices that are small, light and low power consuming. Furthermore, implementation cost is a key consideration for the deployment of such MWP systems in home environment and various integrated MWP application.This PhD deals with very cheap, Bipolar or BiCMOS integrated SiGe/Si MWP devices such as SiGe HPTs, Si LEDs and SiGe LEDs, and focused on the combined integration of mm wave and optoelectronic devices for various applications involving short wavelength links (750nm to 950nm).This research focused on the study of the following points:The better understanding of vertical and lateral illuminated SiGe phototransistors designed in a 80 GHz Telefunken GmbH SiGe HBT technology. We draw conclusions on the optimal performances of the phototransistor. The light sensitive Si substrate and two-dimensional carrier flow effects on SiGe phototransistor performance are investigated. This study helps to derive design rules to improve frequency behavior of the HPT for the targeted applications.For future intra /inter chip hybrid interconnections, we design polymer based low loss microwave transmission lines and optical waveguides on low resistive silicon substrate. It is a step to envisage further Silicon based platforms where SiGe HPT could be integrated at ultra-low cost and high performances with other structures such high-speed VCSEL to build up a complete optical transceiver on a Silicon optical interposer. The polymer is used as dielectric interface between the line and the substrate for electrical interconnections and to design the core and cladding of the optical waveguide.The design, fabrication and characterization of the first on-chip microwave photonic links at mid infrared wavelength (0.65-0.85μm) based on 80 GHz Telefunken GmbH SiGe HBT technological processes. The full optical link combines Silicon Avalanche based Light Emitting Devices (Si Av LEDs), silicon nitride based waveguides and SiGe HPT. Such device could permit hosting microfluidic systems, on chip data communication and bio-chemical analysis applications

Optical fiber sensors have been intensively studied and successfully employed in various human social activities and daily living, such as industrial production, civil engineering, medicine, transportation, national defense and so on. According to different structures, optical sensors could be divided into various categories. This thesis focuses on studying different kinds of in-line fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers, which have played an important role among the optical interferometric fiber sensors. The structure composition, fabrication process, physical principle and practical applications of two novel in-line fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers are proposed and discussed in detail in this work. The tapered bend-insensitive fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (BIF-MZI) is firstly fabricated and used as a fiber vibrometer. The unique double-cladding structure of bend-insensitive fiber not only provides higher mechanical strength to the sensor, but also guarantees a more uniform transmission spectrum, since only a few inner-cladding modes are left interfering with the core mode. A high sensitivity and fast response intensity demodulation scheme is employed by monitoring the power fluctuation of the BIF-MZI at the operation wavelength. Both damped and continuous vibrations are detected using the proposed sensor. It is demonstrated that this sensor responses to an extremely wide range of frequencies from 1 Hz up to 500 kHz with high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The discrimination of temperature and axial strain is realized based on the dispersion effects of high-order-mode fiber (HOMF) by forming a single mode fiber-high-order-mode fiber-single mode fiber (SMF-HOMF-SMF) structure based in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Unlike some kinds of in-line MZIs such as tapered and core–offset structures whose cladding modes are excited with different types under changing temperature and strain circumstances, the HOMF is capable of supporting three stable core modes, which guarantees a reliable and repeatable measurements within a large temperature or strain range. A new method based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is employed to analyze the mode couplings and their chromatic dispersion and intermodal dispersion properties in HOMF. The strong dispersion effects lead to a multi-peak feature in the spatial frequency spectrum. It is found that peaks that denote the waveform periods at positions that are beyond the critical wavelength possess highly sensitive and distinct phase responses to external disturbances, which provides the possibility to realize the discrimination measurements with high sensitivities and smaller errors by selecting appropriate peaks. The phase demodulation scheme is applied to quantify the temperature and strain changes in terms of phase shifts. Appropriate peak selections according to the practical needs would provide an easy access for applications where more than two parameters are required to be discriminated.

Resumo: Neste trabalho foi feito um estudo experimental da transmissão de padrões de frequência atómicos através de uma rede de fibra optica. Até onde sabemos este tipo de transmissão foi realizada pela primeira vez no Brasil. Utilizamos uma conexão de fibra óptica entre o Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin (IFGW) e a Faculdade de Engenharia Elétrica e Computação (FEEC) da UNICAMP, correspondendo a uma distância de aproximadamente 2 km, e um comprimento total de fibra de 18 km. Frequências de RF derivadas de padrões de frequência de Rubídio e de um receptor GPS foram transmitidas e caracterizadas através de medidas de frequência, particularmente por gráficos de variância de Allan, e medidas da fase
Abstract: In this experimental work, transmission of an atomic frequency standard through an optical fiber network has been implemented for first time in Brazil, to the best of our knowledge. We have used a fiber link between the Institute of Physics (IFGW) and the Department of Electrical Engineering inside the campus of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) corresponding to 18 km fiber link (2km between buildings). Radio frequencies derived from a Rubidium standard and a GPS (Global Position system) receiver has been transmitted and characterized via phase and frequency measurements, particularly trough Allan deviation plots and phase measurements

Optical fibre has become the dominant theme of transmission in long haul, high data rate communication systems due to its tremendous bandwidth and low loss. Radio over Fibre (RoF) technology facilitates the seamless integration between wireless and optical communication systems and found to be the most promising solution to meet the exponential bandwidth demands expected for the upcoming years. However, the main bit-rate/distance limitation in RoF systems is the chromatic dispersion. In this thesis, the two generations of RoF technologies, namely Analogue RoF (ARoF) and Digital RoF (DRoF) are investigated. The overall aim of this research is to optimise the optical bandwidth utilisation of these two approaches for a typical transmission of the fronthaul link proposed in the next generation Centralised Radio Access Network (C-RAN). Consequently, a number of physical layer design scenarios for the optimised transmission of the Radio Frequency (RF) signals over a Standards Single Mode Fibre (SSMF) are demonstrated. Firstly, for an ARoF transmission, where the analogue RF signals are transported over SSMF using an optical carrier, a bidirectional link transmitting four Downlink/Uplink channels in a chromatic dispersion limited scenario is designed. Simulation results have shown a clear constellation diagram of a 2.5 Gb/s RF signal transmission over 120 km fibre length. Secondly, a DRoF system with reduced optical bandwidth occupancy is proposed. This system employs an optical Duobinary transmission to the digitised RF signal at the transmitter side to reduce its spectrum and to address the chromatic dispersion effect, simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate the capability of the proposed system to maintain high-quality transmission of the digitised signals over 70 km of fibre distance without dispersion compensation requirements. Finally, an advanced DRoF transmission link based on integrating digital Optical Single Sideband (OSSB) transmission with Duobinary encoding scheme is designed. Simulation results have clearly verified system's robustness against transmission impairments and have better performances in terms of the obtained BER and EVM with respect to the 3GPP standardised values. Moreover, the results show that both transmission distance and power budget are furtherly improved in comparison with two other digital transmission scenarios.

In this work physical and behavioral models for a bulk Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (RSOA) modulator in Radio over Fiber (RoF) links are proposed. The transmission performance of the RSOA modulator is predicted under broadband signal drive. At first, the simplified physical model for the RSOA modulator in RoF links is proposed, which is based on the rate equation and traveling-wave equations with several assumptions. The model is implemented with the Symbolically Defined Devices (SDD) in Advanced Design System (ADS) and validated with experimental results. Detailed analysis regarding optical gain, harmonic and intermodulation distortions, and transmission performance is performed. The distribution of the carrier and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) is also demonstrated. Behavioral modeling of the RSOA modulator is to enable us to investigate the nonlinear distortion of the RSOA modulator from another perspective in system level. The Amplitude-to-Amplitude Conversion (AM-AM) and Amplitude-to-Phase Conversion (AM-PM) distortions of the RSOA modulator are demonstrated based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a generalized polynomial model. Another behavioral model based on Xparameters was obtained from the physical model. Compensation of the nonlinearity of the RSOA modulator is carried out based on a memory polynomial model. The nonlinear distortion of the RSOA modulator is reduced successfully. The improvement of the 3rd order intermodulation distortion is up to 17 dB. The Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is improved from 6.1% to 2.0%. In the last part of this work, the performance of Fibre Optic Networks for Distributed and Extendible Heterogeneous Radio Architectures and Service Provisioning (FUTON) systems, which is the four-channel virtual Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), is predicted by using the developed physical model. Based on Subcarrier Multiplexing (SCM) techniques, four-channel signals with 100 MHz bandwidth per channel are generated and used to drive the RSOA modulator. The transmission performance of the RSOA modulator under the broadband multi channels is depicted with the figure of merit, EVM under di erent adrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) level of 64 and 254 for various number of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers of 64, 512, 1024 and 2048.
Nesta tese são propostos modelos físicos e comportamentais para o amplificador óptico semicondutor reflectivo (RSOA), tendo como objectivo a avaliação do seu desempenho quando utilizado como modulador em ligações de rádio sobre fibra (RoF). Os modelos propostos são capazes de prever o comportamento do dispositivo quando utilizado com sinais de banda larga bem como quando estimulado por sinais de elevada potência. Inicialmente propõe-se um modelo físico simplificado para o RSOA baseado nas equações de taxa e nas equações de propagação electromagnética. A implementação do modelo utiliza o ADS (Advanced Design Systems) e o bloco designado por dispositivo definido simbolicamente (SDD) para descrever as equações de taxa, assim como a propagação de fotões ao longo da cavidade. O modelo permite uma análise detalhada do ganho óptico, distorções harmônicas, intermodulação e seu desempenho de transmissão com portadoras RF modeladas. Foram também considerados modelos comportamentais. Um modelo baseado em rede neural artificial (ANN) e um modelo polinomial generalizado para banda base foram considerados tendo os parâmetros respectivos sido extraídos utilizando, para o efeito, dados obtidos experimentalmente. São demonstradas a característica da distorção resultante da conversão amplitude - amplitude (AM-AM) e conversão da fase - amplitude (AM-PM) no modulador RSOA. Um modelo baseado em parametros X, obtidos a partir do modelo físico, foi também analisado. Compensação da não-linearidade do modulador RSOA é realizada com base num modelo polinomial com memória. Demonstra-se que a distorção não linear do modulador RSOA pode ser compensada com sucesso. Com a compensação obtem-se uma redução de 17 dB da distorção introduzida pelos produtos de intermodulação de terceira ordem. O EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) apresenta uma melhoria de 6,1% para 2,0%. Na última parte deste trabalho considera-se uma configuração que representa a ligação ascendente por fibra de um sistema de antenas remoto a uma estação central de processamento. Com esta configuração pretendese demonstrar a possibilidade de implementação de uma tecnologia MIMO, suportada num sistema RoF. Baseado numa técnica de multiplexação subportadora (SCM), os sinais de quatro canais com largura de banda de 100 MHz por canal são multiplexados e utilizados para modelar o ganho do RSOA. O desempenho deste link óptico é caracterizado para modulações OFDM considerando diferentes números de sub-portadoras por símbolo (64, 512 , 1024 e 2048) assim como o formato QAM imposto sobre cada sub-portadora.

The use of analog fiber optic links for microcellular mobile radio comminications has been the focus of considerable research recently. These systems have the advantages relative to coaxial cable of low noise and enormous bandwidth. Analog subcarrier multiplexing techniques are used for transmitting the mobile signals over the fiber. Use of this technology however presents some unique problems due to the nonlinearities of the fiber optics system and the noise introduced by it. In this thesis, we analyse the dynamic range of the fiber links used for these applications.

The dynamic range is limited by the noise and the nonlinear distortion introduced by the fiber link. The main sources of nonlinear distortion are threshold clipping, gain saturation of the laser, and the combination of laser chirp and fiber dispersion. We have analytically modeled these nonlinearities and used these models to understand the dependence of the nonlinear distortion on the physical parameters of the laser diode and the fiber and also on the modulation index per channel and the number of channels. The performance of the 1S- 19 AMPS signals and the IS-54IDMA signals in the presence of fiber link noise is also discussed. Finally, the dynamic range of the fiber link for both AMPS and IDMA signals has been analyzed. The dynamic range of the fiber link is limited by the threshold clipping nonlinearity. It is also highly dependent on the number of mobile signals that are being communicated over the fiber link.

This thesis describes the realization of a facility for the high-accuracy frequency dissemination on a continental scale. This project was developed at the Optics division of the Italian National Metrology Institute (INRIM), which is in charge of the realization and operation of the atomic primary frequency standards, of their dissemination, and cooperates to the International Atomic Time generation. Frequency dissemination is now based on satellite techniques; however, the resolution provided by these methods does not cope with the accuracy and stability of newgeneration frequency standards. For instance, more than 10 days of measurement are needed to effectively compare primary standards, and years would be necessary to compare optical clocks via satellite links. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that systems based on optical fibers can improve the resolution by about 5 orders of magnitude with respect to satellite techniques. This is the reason why many national metrology institutes in Europe are cooperating to develop a network for frequency dissemination and clocks comparisons all across the continent. This technique is based on the transmission of a narrow-linewidth laser along a standard telecom fiber. At the metrological laboratory, the frequency is measured with respect to a frequency standard, while at the remote link end it is extracted and used as a frequency reference. However, temperature changes, acoustic noise, air flows can degrade the stability of the delivered frequency, and must therefore be compensated. This is done through a Doppler cancellation technique, in which the light travels twice in the optical fiber in opposite directions. This is different from what happens in telecom links, which are inherently bidirectional. Dedicated instruments have therefore been developed. This thesis describes the realization of a phase-stabilized optical link between INRIM and the European Laboratory for Non Linear Spectroscopy in Florence, where an optical clock based on Sr atoms was under development at the time of measurements. This clock has been compared to the INRIM primary standard via the optical link. I worked on the realization of the ultrastable laser sources, on the development and characterization of the optical and electronics apparatus, and at the development of the metrological chain for the remote clocks comparison. This thesis also describes some novel techniques which we investigated in the framework of this project, and new applications of optical fiber links. During my studies I spent two months at the Laboratoire National d’Essais-Systemes de Référence Temps-Espace (LNE-SYRTE) in Paris, where I cooperated to the realization of an ultrastable laser source based on an optical delay line. This is reported in the thesis as well.

Nous présentons une étude sur les réseaux "radio sur fibre" (ROF) pour la distribution de signaux utilisés pour les communications sans fil et nous analysons plus particulièrement la transmission de signaux utilisant le multiplexage par répartition orthogonale de la fréquence (OFDM) adhérant au protocole standard IEEE 802.11 a. Le réseaux de distribution fibrés sont une technologie habilitante pour l'implémentation de réseaux de communication à gestion centralisée. La gestion centralisée des réseaux permet l'application de plusieurs techniques avancées d'optimisation des ressources des réseaux sans fil qui visent à augmenter sensiblement le taux de transmission de donnée et le nombre d'usagers supportés simultanément. Dans ce contexte, nous étudions les liens optiques à modulation externe utilisant des amplificateurs optiques et nous explorons les performances de ces liens en fonction du bruit, du gain RF et de la linéarité. Nous cherchons à identifier quelles conditions minimisent l'impact du lien optique sur la qualité des signaux OFDM. Nous étudions en particulier les effets de la variation de la tension de polarisation du modulateur, et nous montrons que l'optimisation de ce paramètre peut améliorer le gain, la linéarité et le bruit du lien optique. En particulier, le gain RF du lien est augmenté si le niveau de saturation de l'amplificateur optique varie en fonction du point de polarisation du modulateur. Aussi, l'optimisation du point de polarisation permet de réduire la puissance optique transmise sur le lien: ce qui permet de limiter les effets non linéaires de la fibre telle que la diffusion Brillouin stimulée. Enfin, la polarisation du modulateur peut être optimisée pour améliorer la linéarité du lien, grâce à une forme de compensation mutuelle entre la distorsion causée par la fibre et celle causée par le modulateur lui-même. Dans la dernière partie de cet ouvrage, nous explorons les possibles avantages des manipulations et filtrages tout-optiques des signaux RF. Cela permet d'intégrer dans les réseaux ROF des fonctions avancées telles que la manipulation de l'amplitude et de la phase des signaux RF pour le contrôle du diagramme de rayonnement d 'un réseau d'antennes. Nous proposons un nouveau type de ligne à délai tout-optique qui permet l'ajustement indépendant de l'amplitude et de la phase des signaux injectés en chaque antenne du réseau qui supporte des fréquences de porteuse RF élevées et qui permet une intégration facile dans les liens ROF.

Les références de temps et de fréquence sont largement distribuées sur réseaux informatique et de communications, pour une large gamme d'applications scientifiques et industrielles. Poussé par une demande pour de meilleures performances, un certain nombre de nouvelles méthodes de transfert de temps et de fréquence sur des réseaux à fibres optiques ont été développées ces dernières années. Dans cette thèse, notre objectif est de développer une approche de transfert de temps et de fréquence multi-utilisateurs, compatible avec les réseaux de télécommunications et compétitive avec la distribution de temps par GNSS. Nous nous intéressons donc aux méthodes pour les réseaux à commutation par paquets, comme le NTP (Network Time Protocol) et le PTP (Precision Timing Protocol). Nous nous concentrons également sur les liaisons “unidirectionnelles”, où les signaux aller et retour entre les nœuds de réseau se propagent sur des fibres distinctes, non au sein d’une même fibre (liaisons “bidirectionnelles”). En particulier, nous utilisons une méthode appelée White Rabbit PTP (WR). Développée au CERN, basée sur PTP, utilisant l’Ethernet synchrone et d'autres techniques pour atteindre des performances élevées, WR réalise une stabilité du temps sous-nanoseconde pour la synchronisation d'instruments sur des réseaux à l'échelle de 10 km. Nous sommes particulièrement intéressés par l'extension de cette méthode pour la distribution de références au niveau régional ou national, sur des liaisons allant jusqu'à 1000 km.Nous étudions d’abord les performances de l'équipement réseau White Rabbit, en particulier le commutateur White Rabbit. Nous y apportons diverses améliorations : sur le verrouillage du commutateur grand maître à la référence externe, améliorant ainsi sa stabilité à court terme de plus d'un ordre de grandeur ; sur la bande passante de verrouillage du commutateur esclave ; et en augmentant le débit des messages PTP entre les commutateurs maître et esclave.Nous étudions ensuite les liaisons WR moyennes et longues distances. Nous construisons un lien unidirectionnel de 100 km en utilisant des bobines de fibres dans le laboratoire. Nous découvrons que la performance à court terme est limitée par la dispersion chromatique de la fibre, tandis que la performance à long terme est dégradée par le bruit thermique. Pour limiter l'effet de la dispersion chromatique sur les liaisons longue distance, nous proposons l'utilisation d'une approche en cascade. Nous réalisons un lien en cascade de 500 km, à nouveau avec des bobines de fibres. Nous utilisons le multiplexage en longueur d'onde dense pour construire ce lien par des passages multiples à travers des bobines plus courtes. Nous obtenons une stabilité de transfert de fréquence de 2 × 10-12 à une seconde de temps d'intégration et de 5 × 10-15 en un jour, limitée par le bruit thermique à long terme. Nous obtenons une stabilité temporelle de 5 ps à une seconde de temps d'intégration, diminuant jusqu'à un minimum de 1,2 ps à 20 secondes et restant inférieure à une nanoseconde pour des durées plus longues. Ces performances sont similaires à court terme, et deux ordres de grandeur meilleures à long terme, qu’un récepteur GPS de bonne qualité. Nous nous attendons à ce que les fluctuations thermiques et donc l'effet du bruit thermique des fibres soient réduits d'un facteur d'environ cinq pour les installations sur le terrain.Enfin, nous faisons des études préliminaires sur l'étalonnage en temps des liaisons WR. Le principal défi est de mesurer l'asymétrie de longueur optique entre les deux fibres utilisées pour le transfert des signaux aller et retour. Nous démontrons une technique d'échange de fibres, en utilisant une liaison suburbaine White Rabbit sur fibre noire. Nous décrivons et testons ensuite une nouvelle méthode variationnelle pour l'étalonnage, impliquant une méthode de mesure différentielle basée sur l'exploitation de deux liaisons WR à différentes longueurs d'onde sur la même liaison

Driven by a demand for improved performance, a number of new methods for time and frequency transfer over optical fiber-based networks have been developed in recent years. In this thesis our objective is to develop a scalable network time and frequency transfer approach, providing multi-user dissemination, compatible with large telecommunication networks and competitive with GNSS-based time distribution. Therefore we are concerned with methods for use in packet-based networks, like the Network Time Protocol (NTP) and Precision Timing Protocol (PTP). We also concentrate on “unidirectional” links, where the forward and backward signals between network nodes propagate over separate fibers, not within the same fiber (“bidirectional” links).In particular we use a method called White Rabbit PTP (WR). This is a novel technology developed at CERN, based on PTP while using Synchronous Ethernet and other techniques to achieve high performance. It demonstrates sub-nanosecond time stability and synchronization of arrays of instruments over 10 km scale networks. We are particularly interested in extending this method for large scale distribution of references at regional or national level, over links of up to 1000 km.We first study extensively the default performances and limitations of White Rabbit network equipment, in particular the White Rabbit switch. We make various improvements to its operation: on the locking of the grandmaster switch to the external reference, thus improving its short-term stability by more than an order of magnitude; optimizing the locking bandwidth of the slave switch; and increasing the PTP messaging rate between master and slave switches.We then study medium and long-distance WR links. We construct a 100 km, unidirectional link using fiber spools in the laboratory. We discover that the short-term performance is limited by chromatic dispersion in the fiber, while the long-term performance is degraded by the influence of temperature variations on the fiber. To limit the effect of chromatic dispersion for long-haul links, we propose the use of a cascaded approach. We realise a national scale, cascaded, 500 km link, again utilizing fiber spools. We use Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing methods to construct this link by mutliple passages through shorter spools. We achieve a frequency transfer stability of 2 × 10−12 at one second of integration time and 5 × 10−15 at one day, limited by thermal noise in the long term. We achieve a time stability of 5 ps at one second of integration time, decreasing to a minimum of 1.2 ps at 20 seconds and remaining below one nanosecond for longer averaging times. These performances are similar in the short term, and two orders of magnitude better in the long term, than good quality GPS receivers. We expect thermal fluctuations and therefore the effect of fiber thermal noise to be suppressed by a factor of approximately five for installations in the field.Finally we make preliminary investigations of time calibration of WR links. The main challenge here is to measure the optical length asymmetry between the two fibers used for signal transfer in the forward and backward directions. We demonstrate a fiber swapping technique, using a mid range, suburban White Rabbit link over dark fiber. We then describe and test a new variational method for calibration, involving a differential measurement method based on operating two WR links at different wavelengths over the same optical fiber link.In conclusion, we demonstrate high performance, long haul White Rabbit links for time and frequency dissemination to multiple users. With the level of frequency transfer performance achieved, White Rabbit PTP provides a competitive and scalable technique for comparing industrial atomic clocks at regional and national scales

A method to predict modal noise in short distance (30 m), high temporal bandwidth (hundreds of MHz) multimode optical links is proposed. In order to accommodate low cost, mechanical alignment, the link medium is modified from single mode fiber (used routinely in telecommunication systems) to multimode fiber. Modal dispersion in multimode fiber calls for a reduction in link length to preserve a relatively high temporal bandwidth. The source is a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), which is well suited for the high packaging density, high temporal bandwidth, and low power dissipation requirements of short distance optical communication systems. Coherence properties of several different types of VCSELs are experimentally examined with constant and modulated injection current with a bandwidth typical of that used in data communications systems. A fluctuation in the spatial irradiance output pattern of the VCSEL is identified as the dynamic component responsible for significant modal noise effects. The effect of finite system coherence length has been applied to the simulation process. The reduction in output fiber face speckle contrast, due to a broader source power spectrum and/or due to fiber modal dispersion with increasing fiber length, mitigates the effect of modal noise in the transmission link.

El Gran Conjunto Milimétrico / submilimétrico de Atacama (ALMA) es el observatorio astronómico más grande jamás construido. Se encuentra ubicado en el Llano de Chajnantor, a una altitud de 5.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar en el norte de Chile. Se compone de un conjunto de 66 antenas distribuidas en un área de 15 km de diámetro y que opera entre 35 y 950 GHz, Estas antenas están interconectados en un interferómetro capaz de detectar fuentes de señales débiles procedentes del espacio más profundo y producir imágenes con una resolución angular mejor que el telescopio espacial Hubble. Para lograr este rendimiento de las antenas se tiene que registrar las señales procedentes del cielo con un error de tiempo más pequeño que 38 fs. Esta sincronización se realiza mediante señales ópticas transmitidas desde un edificio central utilizando una red de fibra óptica del tipo usado en telecomunicaciones. El sistema de transmisión se ve afectado por perturbaciones externas tales como la vibración, y oscilaciones térmicas. Estas perturbaciones además de cambiar directamente la longitud de la fibra, afectan el estado de polarización de la luz que viaja a través de ella. Este cambio de longitud puede ser neutralizado aplicando un esquema de corrección de longitud de línea que utiliza estiradores de fibra. Sin embargo, el cambio de polarización no es fácil de compensar, y su interacción con la dispersión de modo de polarización (PMD) , produce una variación de fase adicional. Con el fin de minimizar este efecto, ALMA especificó valores de PMD muy bajos para todos los equipos que se ubican en el camino óptico de la señal que transmite la referencia de fase. Puesto que el sistema de corrección de longitud de línea utiliza estiradores mecánicos, se debe poner especial atención en alinear el estado de polarización de la señal que entra al estirador de fibra con su punto óptimo. Solamente encontrando este punto se puede minimizar el cambio de polarización que se produce al estirar la fibra ubicada en el interior del estirador mecánico. Este trabajo presenta un algoritmo innovador y eficiente para encontrar el eje óptimo de los estiradores de fibra utilizados en ALMA. Este algoritmo se desarrolló durante la realización de este trabajo, y permite una identificación rápida y precisa del eje óptimo que minimiza el cambio de polarización, comparado con el método original, este algoritmo reduce en un 70% el tiempo promedio de calibración y reduce en un 50% el error de calibración residual. También se hace una revisión de los sistemas de transferencia de referencia de tiempo utilizados en ALMA. Explicando los desafíos que enfrentan y las soluciones tecnológicas implementadas para supéralos. A continuación, se presenta el efecto del PMD, mostrando diferentes técnicas de medición y su compensación. Además este trabajo presenta un conjunto de mediciones de PMD realizadas sobre fotomezcladores, estiradores de fibra, e instalaciones de fibra en el Arreglo Muy Grande (o Very Large Array, administrado por NRAO) y en ALMA.  The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest astronomical observatory ever built. It is located on the Chajnantor plateau, at an altitude of 5000 meters above the sea level in northern Chile. It consists of an array of 66 antennas spread in a 15 km diameter area and operating between 35 and 950 GHz. These antennas are interconnected in an interferometer capable to detect weakest signal sources coming from the deepest space and produce images with an angular resolution better than the Hubble space telescope. To achieve this performance the antennas need to record the signals coming from the sky with a time error smaller than 38 fs; this synchronization is made using optical signals transmitted from a central building via a telecommunication grade fiber optic network. This transmission system is affected by some external perturbations like vibrations and thermal cycles. These perturbations, besides directly changing the length of the fiber, affect the polarization state of the light traveling across it. The length change can be neutralized implementing a line length correction scheme that uses fiber stretchers, but the polarization change is not easy to compensate, and its interaction with the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) produces extra phase drift. In order to minimize this effect, ALMA specified very low PMD for all the equipment in the optical path of the signal carrying the phase references. Given that the line length correction scheme uses fiber stretchers that mechanically change the length of a long section of the fiber, special attention needs to be put in aligning the input polarization state with the axis of this device that minimizes the polarization change produced when the stretcher moves. This work presents an innovative optimization algorithm for the fiber stretchers used in ALMA, which was developed during the realization of this work. It allows a fast and accurate identification of this axis of minimal polarization change, compared with the original method; this algorithm produced a 70% reduction of the average calibration time and a 50% reduction of the average residual calibration. A review of the time reference transfer system used in ALMA is also made, explaining the challenges that it faces and the way they are overcome. Then the effect of PMD is presented, showing different PMD compensation and measurement techniques. In addition, this work presents PMD measurements made on ALMA photomixers and fiber stretchers, and of buried fiber installations of the Very Large Array (VLA) and ALMA.

The accuracy of TDOA estimation between sites affects the final positioning calculating the performance of the target. The problem needs to be solved in the multi-station localization systems, requires highly accurate phase synchronization for consistency errors cancellation of receivers. In this paper, the impact of phase error on TDOA localization is analyzed briefly, and we proposed a TDOA multi-station positioning system based on a phase synchronization technique via a long round-trip FOL. By comparing with an actual GPS timing TDOA based method, we demonstrated that the performance of the proposed technique can approximately triple the positioning precision. The simulation results show that the FOL synchronization technique can be used as a potential synchronization method of TDOA multilateation system due to its effective phase error cancellation.

De hecho, ha despertado un interés creciente entre los investigadores y varias empresas de todo el mundo trabajan actualmente en el desarrollo de redes inalámbricas de muy alta velocidad. Las comunidades científica e industrial consideran la OWC como una tecnología complementaria en sus diversas formas: comunicaciones ópticas en el espacio libre (FSO), comunicaciones de luz visible (VLC) o fidelidad de la luz (Li-Fi). El espectro óptico ha sido considerado durante muchos años como una gran oportunidad para las comunicaciones inalámbricas, especialmente debido a la saturación del espectro de radiofrecuencia (RF). Esta disertación trata del uso de fuentes de banda ancha en sistemas de transmisión de luz visible (VLC), así como en sistemas de transmisión en el espectro infrarrojo por fibra óptica. En el trabajo de investigación realizado se pueden distinguir tres partes: En la primera parte, se considera el estudio y la simulación de componentes de Diodos Emisores de Luz (LED) con el software WIEN2k centrándose en las propiedades ópticas y eléctricas de los elementos II-VI. La segunda parte trata del diseño, la implementación y las pruebas de diferentes prototipos de comunicación VLC para la transmisión analógica y digital en modo simplex y semidúplex. Hemos demostrado un sistema OWC empleando una fuente de banda ancha (LED) para la transmisión no sólo de datos, sino también para la transmisión inalámbrica de energía. Además, se aborda el problema de la sincronización y la detección del nivel "1" o "0" de un bit en los sistemas de comunicación inalámbrica óptica implementados que surge como consecuencia de la atenuación de la luz a lo largo de la distancia y al problema de la pérdida de línea de visión (NLOS) entre el emisor y el receptor. Para hacer frente a este problema, se ha proporcionado un protocolo de comunicación que garantiza la transmisión fiable de datos digitales con un algoritmo de detección de nivel de bits adaptativo y se ha demostrado su eficacia mediante la transmisión de textos e imágenes. Además, esta tesis aporta una solución para la implementación de transmisores multiplexados en redes con división de longitud de onda (WDM) para formatos de modulación con multiplexación por división de frecuencia ortogonal (OFDM) basados en el uso de fuentes de banda ancha en el espectro infrarrojo para redes de fibra bidireccionales centralizadas. A pesar de las limitaciones impuestas por la dispersión cromática en el uso de este tipo de fuentes ópticas, la inclusión de ciertas estructuras antes de la detección permite la transmisión de señales OFDM en enlaces ópticos. En este trabajo se ha demostrado experimentalmente la reutilización de portadoras, la asignación dinámica de ancho de banda y la transmisión de señales OFDM multibanda mediante el uso de fuentes ópticas de banda ancha en redes WDM. Los principales resultados obtenidos en cada parte de esta tesis doctoral muestran los procedimientos de estudio, la eficacia de las soluciones propuestas y las limitaciones encontradas.

Les comunitats científica i industrial consideren la OWC com una tecnologia complementària en les seues diverses formes: comunicacions òptiques en l'espai lliure (FSO), comunicacions de llum visible (VLC) o fidelitat de la llum (Li-Fi). L'espectre òptic ha sigut considerat durant molts anys com una gran oportunitat per a les comunicacions sense fils, especialment a causa de la saturació de l'espectre de radiofreqüència (RF). Aquesta dissertació tracta de l'ús de fonts de banda ampla en sistemes de transmissió de llum visible (VLC), així com en sistemes de transmissió en l'espectre infraroig per fibra òptica. En el treball de recerca realitzat es poden distingir tres parts: ¿ En la primera part, es considera l'estudi i la simulació de components de Díodes Emissors de Llum (LED) amb el software WIEN2k centrant-se en les propietats òptiques i elèctriques dels elements II-VI. ¿ La segona part tracta del disseny, la implementació i les proves de diferents prototips de comunicació VLC per a la transmissió analògica i digital de manera simplex i semidúplex. [EN] Optical wireless communication (OWC) is a very promising technology for future wireless communications developments. It has attracted increasing interest from researchers and several companies around the world are currently working on the development of very high-speed wireless networks. The scientific and industrial communities believe that OWC will be a complementary technology in its various forms: Free Space Optical communications (FSO), Visible Light Communications (VLC), Light Fidelity (Li-Fi). In fact, the optical spectrum has been considered for many years as a great opportunity for wireless communications especially due to the saturation of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. This dissertation deals with the use of broadband sources in visible light transmission systems (VLC) as well as fiber optic systems. To carry out the research, three parts can be distinguished: In the first part, we consider the study and simulation of Light Emitting Diode (LED) components with the WIEN2k software by focusing on the optical and electrical properties of elements II-VI. The second part deals with the design, implementation and testing of different VLC communication prototypes for analog and digital transmission in simplex and half-duplex mode. We have demonstrated that an OWC system using a broadband source (i.e. an LED) can be used not only for data transmission, but also for wireless power transmission. Moreover, the synchronization problem and the detection of level "1" or "0" of a bit often arise in the optical wireless communication systems. This is a result of the attenuation nature of the light over the distance and the problem of Non Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) between the emitter and the receiver. To deal with this problem, a communication protocol ensuring reliable digital data transmission with an adaptive bit level detection algorithm has been provided and its effectiveness has been demonstrated by the transmission of texts and images. In addition, this thesis provides a solution for the implementation of wavelength division multiplexed - orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (WDM-OFDM) transmitters based on the use of broadband sources in the infrared spectrum for centralized bidirectional fiber networks. Despite the chromatic dispersion that avoids the use of this type of optical sources, the inclusion of certain structures before detection allows the transmission of OFDM signals in optical links. Carrier reuse, dynamic bandwidth allocation and multiband OFDM signals transmission will be experimentally demonstrated by using optical broadband sources in WDM networks. The main results obtained during this thesis work demonstrate the study procedures, for each part, the effectiveness of the proposed solutions as well as the constraints encountered.

In digital communication systems, several types of impairments may be introduced to the signal. These impairments result in degraded system performance; for example, high bit-error-rate or power penalty. For optical communication systems, in this thesis, these impairments are categorized into four types; that is, thermal noise, shot noise, signal-dependent noise, and intersymbol interference (ISI). By using a Gaussian approximation, effects of the first three impairments are analyzed. It is shown that signal-dependent noise introduces an error floor to the system and the bit-error-rate is considerably degraded if a nonzero-extinction ratio is applied to the system. It is shown that if the decision threshold at the decision circuit is set improperly, more received power is required to keep the bit-error-rate constant. Three main components in the system (i.e., transmitter, optical fiber, and receiver) are modeled as Butterworth filters. ISI from this model is determined by computer simulation. A high ISI is from a small system bandwidth. It is shown that a minimum power penalty can be achieved if the transmitter and receiver bandwidths are matched and fixed, and the ratio of fiber bandwidth to bit rate is 0.85. Comparing ISI from this model to ISI from raised cosine- rolloff filters, it is shown that at some particular bandwidths ISI from raised cosine-rolloff filters is much lower that that from this model. However, if the transmitter and receiver bandwidths are not matched and are not equal to these bandwidths, ISI from this model is lower than ISI from raised cosine-rolloff filters.

The work includes the characteristics of the eye diagram and its analysis. The resulting program can also be used to measure the real transmission route and its parameters.

Optical packet switching (OPS) is one of the more promising solutions for meeting the diverse needs of broadband networking applications of the future. By virtue of its small data traffic granularity as well as its nanoseconds switching speed, OPS can be used to provide connection-oriented or connectionless services for different groups of users with very different networking requirements. The optical buffer and the switch fabric are two of the most important components in an OPS router. In this research, novel designs for the optical buffer and switch fabric are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In particular, an optical buffer that is based on a folded-path delay-line tree architecture will be discussed. This buffer is the most compact non-recirculating optical delay line buffer to date, and it uses an array of high-speed ON-OFF optical reflectors to dynamically reconfigure its delay within several nanoseconds. A major part of this research is devoted to the design and performance optimization of these high-speed reflectors. Simulations and measurements are used to compare different reflector designs as well as to determine their optimal operating conditions. Another important component in the OPS router is the switch fabric, and it is used to perform space switching for the optical packets. Optical switch fabrics are used to overcome the limitations imposed by conventional electronic switch fabrics: high power consumption and dependency on the modulation format and bit-rate of the signals. Currently, only those fabrics that are based on the broadcast-and-select architecture can provide truly non-blocking multicast services to all input ports. However, a major drawback of these fabrics is that they are implemented using a large number of optical gates based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). This results in large component count and high energy consumption. In this research, a new multicast-capable switch fabric which does not require any SOA gates is proposed. This fabric relies on a passive all-optical gate that is based on the Four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength conversion process in a highly-nonlinear fiber. This diploma thesis deals with the optimization of production process at ADC Czech Republic s.r.o. Primarily, the method of Lean Six Sigma is used. The first part has a form of the literary study where individual methods used within the company are described. These are further applied in the practical part. The second part presents a brief introduction of the company including the production portfolio. The last part focuses on the practical solution of particular problems of two packaging lines aiming to increase the utilization. In the thesis, the DMAIC improvement cycle is employed.

High voltage power transformer is one of the most important and expensive components in today's power transmission and distribution systems. Any overlooked critical fault generated inside a power transformer may lead to a transformer catastrophic failure which could not only cause a disruption to the power system but also significant equipment damage. Accurate and prompt information on the health state of a transformer is thus the critical prerequisite for an asset manager to make a vital decision on a transformer with suspicious conditions. Partial discharge (PD) is not only a precursor of insulation degradation, but also a primary factor to accelerate the deterioration of the insulation system in a transformer. Monitoring of PD activities and the concentration of PD generated combustible gases dissolved in the transformer oil has been proven to be an effective procedure for transformer health state estimation. However current commercially available sensors can only be installed outside of transformers and offer indirect or delayed information. This research is aimed to investigate and develop several sensor techniques for transformer health monitoring. The first work is an optical fiber extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor for PD detection. By filling SF6 into the sensor air cavity of the extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer sensor, the last potential obstacle that prevents this kind of sensors from being installed inside transformers has been removed. The proposed acoustic sensor multiplexing system is stable and more economical than the other sensor multiplexing methods that usually require the use of a tunable laser or filters. Two dissolved gas analysis (DGA) methods for dissolved hydrogen or acetylene measurement are also proposed and demonstrated. The dissolved hydrogen detection is based on hydrogen induced fiber loss and the dissolved acetylene detection is by direct oil transmission measurement.

In order to cope up with the ever increasing demand for larger transmission bandwidth, Radio over Fiber technology is a very beneficial solution. These systems are expected to play a major role within future fifth generation wireless networks due to their inherent capillary distribution properties. Nonlinear compensation techniques are becoming increasingly important to improve the performance of telecommunication channels by compensating for channel nonlinearities. Indeed, significant bounds on the technology usability and performance degradation occur due to nonlinear characteristics of optical transmitter, nonlinear generation of spurious frequencies, which, in the case of RoF links exploiting Directly Modulated Lasers , has the combined effect of laser chirp and optical fiber dispersion among its prevailing causes. The purpose of the research is to analyze some of the main causes of harmonic and intermodulation distortion present in Radio over Fiber (RoF) links, and to suggest a solution to reduce their effects, through a digital predistortion technique. Predistortion is an effective and interesting solution to linearize and this allows to demonstrate that the laser’s chirp and the optical fiber’s dispersion are the main causes which generate harmonic distortion. The improvements illustrated are only theoretical, based on a feasibility point of view. The simulations performed lead to significant improvements for short and long distances of radio over fiber link lengths. The algorithm utilized for simulation has been implemented on MATLAB. The effects of chirp and fiber nonlinearity in a directly modulated fiber transmission system are investigated by simulation, and a cost effective and rather simple technique for compensating these effects is discussed. A detailed description of its functional model is given, and its attractive features both in terms of quality improvement of the received signal, and cost effectiveness of the system are illustrated.

Los sistemas de radio sobre fibra(Radio Over fibre ROF) ofrecen el ancho de banda y flexibilidad necesario para la generación y distribución de del señales inalámbricas del futuro en una arquitectura de red óptica, que reduce el coste de las redes centralizando el procesado y simplificando la ubicación de la antena (estación de base EB). El uso de sistemas de comunicaciones ópticas como una media de transporte de señales inalámbricas en enlaces RoF reduce el cuello de botella entre los estándares de acceso inalámbrico y cableado en un dominio convergente óptico. Las redes de acceso ópticas están evolucionando con capacidades de hasta 10 Gb/s con el estándard 10GEPON, dejando un cuello de botella entre tecnologías de acceso inalámbrico y óptico. . Eso ha motivado gran esfuerzo de investigación en la generación y distribución de señales inalámbricas de alta capacidad (> 10 Gb/s) basada en RoF. En esta tesis se ha investigado el uso de técnicas fotónicas para la generación , distribución y demodulación de señales inalámbricas moduladas vectorialmente. Esta tesis está principalmente dedicada a la generación de señales inalámbricas espectralmente eficientes como la modulación de fase en cuadratura (QPSK) o modulación de amplitud cuadratura de multinivel (M-QAM). El trabajo presentado en esta tesis está clasificado en dos partes: la primera de ellas trata de las técnicas fotónicas que utilizan señales eléctricas coherente para la generación y demodulación de señales inalámbricas, mientras la segunda parte trata de usar señales ópticas incoherentes. En la primera parte de la tesis, están presentadas diferentes arquitecturas de sistemas y están analizadas numéricamente, y demostradas experimentalmente. Un nuevo concepto denominado "modulación vectorial fotónica" (PVM) es propuesto para la generación de señales inalámbricas con una modulación M-QAM. Basado en esta técnica se presenta la generación de señales de capacidad 10Gb/s con una modulación de QPSK y 16-QAM.
