The approach is easily adaptable for use by 2nd year or final year undergraduates and M.Sc. course students, depending upon the detail and complexity presented in the experimental script.

The article is devoted to the usage of optical switches in ship's automated systems to increase the noise immunity of transmitted information. Ship’s sizes enlargement leads to the lengthening of communication lines. This causes the increasement of noises and electromagnetic interference to the signals in cable lines. Traditional methods of interference protection are becoming ineffective. Therefore, fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL) are used onboard the ships, where information is distributed in the form of modulated light pulses. Theoretically it makes possible to eliminate the interference at all. Also it increases the noise immunity of transmitted information in the main communication lines of ship’s systems. However, other sections of ship communications remain wired and are still subjected to interference. The usage of FOCL in all sections of ship communication lines is still impossible due to the high cost of optoelectronic switching equipment, where the principle of double conversion is used.

The purpose of the study is to propose and substantiate technical solutions for inter-satellite and subscriber paths of loworbit communication networks. There is a prospect of commercial use of such networks; therefore, the current stage of low-orbit satellite communications development is characterized by an increase in efforts to put the projects into practice. As part of the study, solutions for inter-satellite paths (ISP) in low-orbit communication systems and solutions that increase the capacity of their subscriber paths are considered. It is noted that ISPs can be built on the basis of radio and optical bands equipment. In this regard, the advantages and disadvantages of each case are considered. The expediency of constructing subscriber paths based on radio band equipment and the preference of constructing ISP based on optical band equipment are substantiated. The relationship between the feasibility of increasing the capacity of subscriber paths and the capabilities of ISP in terms of reliability and bandwidth is established.

Underwater wireless communication technology plays a key role in the field of marine equipment technology. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate an underwater optical–acoustic cooperative communication platform for an underwater wireless data transmission system. The system utilizes an underwater Remote-Operated Vehicle (ROV) as a carrier, equipped with LEDbased optical communication and acoustic communication modems. In particular, the system applies optical communication to transmit large-scale data and applies acoustic communication to provide acoustic-assisted signaling exchange before optical transmission and Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) during optical transmission. By experimentally measuring the transmission distance under different water quality conditions, we found that the system can achieve a data rate of up to 5 Mb/s over a laboratory underwater channel of 7.6 m. By comparing the attenuation coefficients for the outdoor underwater environment with that in clear seawater, we estimate that the achievable link distance in clear seawater can reach 11 m with a data rate of 3.125 MB/s. The proposed system takes both implementation complexity and cost into consideration and also provides significant guidance for future real-time high-speed underwater optical–acoustic communications.

Optical wireless communications in outdoor scenarios are challenged by uncontrollable atmospheric conditions that impair the channel quality. In this paper, different optical camera communications (OCC) equipment are experimentally studied in the laboratory and the field, and a sub-pixel architecture is raised as a potential solution for outdoor wireless sensor networks (WSN) applications, considering its achievable data throughput, the spatial division of sources, and the ability of cameras to overcome the attenuation caused by different atmospheric conditions such as rain, turbulence and the presence of aerosols. Sub-pixel OCC shows particularly adequate capabilities for some of the WSN applications presented, also in terms of cost-effectiveness and scalability. The novel topology of sub-pixel projection of multiple transmitters over the receiver using small optical devices is presented as a solution using OCC that re-uses camera equipment for communication purposes on top of video-monitoring.

The current railway track circuit monitoring system is prone to disturbances that can result in accidents. Meanwhile, basic signaling equipment is slow and cannot achieve satisfactory real-time data acquisition speed. This study aims to solve the aforementioned problems by designing an online monitoring and management platform for railway signal infrastructure, which is based on the graphical programming language LabVIEW. Online monitoring and management of railways’ basic signaling equipment allow real-time collection and communication of various signal equipment data. These processes also enable signal processing, chart display, acousto-optic alarm, user authority management, data storage, data query analysis, and report printing. The test results show that the LabVIEW-based basic signaling equipment for monitoring and managing railway systems can transmit data correctly and steadily, thereby resulting in convenient and ideal operation.

The realization of the control system of intelligent lights include: LED headlights Lord adaptive dimmer, high power LED lamp overheating protection, light and automatic operation, front fog lamps and intelligent control of the lights. Use LED lamp as light lighting equipment, a traditional light it is difficult to have the power to control and adaptive control mode. Based on the optical communication technology LED lighting is using PWM signal of high power LED lamp drivers, control PWM LED lights of empty loading to send the information and than realize the visible optical communication. Optical communication has strong; secrecy is small, transport energy loss of harmless, transmission range, etc.

Abstract The necessity of testing the equipment for monitoring the operation of nuclear power plants is justified. It is proposed to use optical fiber and pulsed laser radiation for these purposes. It is established that optical fiber is more resistant to radiation than other communication systems. The design of a fiber-optic emergency simulator is developed. The calculation of its characteristics is carried out. Their experimental research was carried out. It was found that with an optical signal delay of 98.6 microseconds, the loss is – 26 dB with an uneven frequency response of ± 2 dB. This makes it possible to test the entire set of equipment that uses optical signals used to control a nuclear power plant.

The objective of this work is to propose a solution to the problem of the lack of telecommunication services, with adequate quality of service and coverage, in the town of Choclococha, Huancavelica-Peru. For this purpose, the design and evaluation of an optical link as a backbone network and a wireless access network is presented. It is an applied and experimental research in which performance parameters were evaluated. The independent variable is the optical transport network and the dependent variable is data communication. The latter is defined by two indicators: throughput and signal reception power at the users. Both indicators were measured in a sample of the population, obtaining results that were validated with respect to the expected values according to specifications and regulations. Thus, the measured throughput exceeds the 40% data rate guaranteed by the telecommunications operator. As for the reception power, it exceeds the sensitivity level of the receiving equipment. Therefore, it is concluded that the proposed solution supports communications with optimum speed and coverage.

The existing telecommunication network the construction principle of which is nowadays based on active equipment that is required to be serviced due to its outmoded technology was considered. The modernization measures of telecommunication network at large freight terminals with the use of PON technologies which allow to complete properly and on time freigh handling, receipt of cargo, dispatch of cargo, making up and breaking down of cargo trains, shunting works were provided. It was decribed the stucture of PON technology which includes one OLT optical line terminal per network, a set of nodes of ONT subscribers connected to OLT by means of splittera over one fibre. OLT allocates time for information broadcasting to avoid the overlap of outgoing signals, to improve communication quality, noise immunity from ONT subcribers. Modernization of telecommunication network suppose the replacement of existing electrical cables laid in the cable channels on the fiber optic. Located at the station equipment and ATS Definity SI in the line-switching room will be removed. There will be a new small-size multifunctional equipment which allow to connect a large number of subscribers providing a broad range of service. Properly selected type of optical cable will allow to achieve a long duration of use of a new technological network with further development prospects, to use it only for organizing work at a large freight railway station.

Thus, optical technologies have the potential to greatly help in realizing future smart infrastructures and systems. This paper gives an overview of currently available and emerging optical technologies for sensing and communication applications and reviews their possible application in the context of the IoT for realizing smart systems and infrastructures.

The power communication system based on synchronous digital hierarchy(SDH) optical, transmission technology is an important component to ensure the safety and stability of power network. After, years of development, the network has been gradually mature, but it still has many problems, such as the weak, structure of the communication network, insufficient network transmission capacity, weak network access and network management. Therefore, it is necessary to do the research and take simulation for the power communication system based on SDH optical transmission technology. The paper builds up the simulation, platform of SDH network in power communication system based on the EXATA simulation tools. For SDH, device, we implemented functions including multiplexing, demultiplexing and digital cross-connection. And, the simulation analysis provides a great theoretical support for constructing equipment models and network, topology.

In this study, erbium ytterbium doped fiber amplifier components and core systems for fiber to the home broadcast overlays are developed and evaluated to ensure stable high-power light even during long-distance data transmission in broadcast networks. Consequently , data transmission in the broadcasting network is found to be low in loss, long-distance transmission is deemed possible, and stable optical signals can be amplified using domestic equipment instead of expensive foreign equipment. The tools developed in this study provide an opportunity to reduce dependence on overseas products by allowing domestic technology, which lacks optical amplifier technology, to compete with overseas products at a low price. In the future, these tools are expected to accommodate more members from the optical communication field and be applied to various fields that use high-power light.

In communication networks, the volume of traffic, the number of connected devices and users continues to grow. As a result, the energy consumption generated by the communication infrastructure has become an important parameter that needs to be carefully considered and optimized both when designing the network and when operating it in real-time. In this paper, the methodology of calculation of complex parameters of energy consumption for transport telecommunication networks is proposed. Unlike the known techniques, the proposed methodology takes into account heterogeneity and multilayer networks. It also takes into account the energy consumption parameter during the downtime of the network equipment in the process of processing the service data blocks, which is quite an important task for improving the accuracy of energy consumption at the stage of implementing the energy-saving network. We also developed simulation software to estimate and manage the energy consumption of the optical transport network using the LabVIEW environment. This software tool allows telecommunication network designers to evaluate energy consumption, which allows them to choose the optimal solution for the desired projects. The use of electro-and acousto-optical devices for optical transport networks is analyzed. We recommended using electro-optical devices for optical modulators and acousto-optical devices for optical switches. The gain from using this combination of optical devices and the parameter of rij electro-optical coefficient and M2 acousto-optical quality parameter found in the paper is about 36.1% relative to the complex criterion of energy consumption.

Fueled by the Internet and nowadays unlimited connectivity expectations, the assembly of optoelectronic packages became a key element to enable the explosive growth in the communication field around the entire globe. The primary challenge in the field of advanced optoelectronics and photonic device packaging (e.g. laser diodes, VCSEL's, optical benches, lenses etc.) is to accurately align the different optical components in reference to each other for optimal optical device performance. This growing need for high precision die attach (<= 0.5um @ 3 sigma) systems and solutions at the shortest possible cycle times has been studied and implemented by AMICRA Microtechnologies. AMICRA's state of the art high accuracy automated assembly system solutions have been successfully used for over a decade in both a laboratory setup and a high volume manufacturing environment. From handling a large variety of substrate materials, thin and fragile chips with odd aspect ratios, lenses and other components, the flexible and dynamic vision alignment concept and the bonding process controls required to achieve high overall component placement accuracies has been AMCIRA's industry focus since the company's inception. While significant progress has been made to provide solutions for all communications and photonics applications there are currently still some challenges out there to be overcome, challenges that can also change on an application by application basis. Besides the technical challenges the cost effectiveness or cost per bond for those applications is a very critical overall success factor as well. This paper will elaborate on manufacturability concerns and equipment automation challenges associated with the key parameters of a Photonics applications high accuracy die attach process which, amongst others, not only require highly sophisticated vision alignment algorithms but also thermal transfer processes either using an eutectic process or a laser soldering technique. Given the ever shrinking packaging form factors, all of AMICRA's research and developments in the Photonics field have also been successfully introduced and applied in more traditional semiconductor applications which have an increasing need for high accuracy die attach.

It is conducive to improve the level of substation intellectualization and information sharing.

In this paper, based on the practice optical transport network (OTN) electric power communication network business, through the modeling analysis shows the specific influence dispersion optical pulses, then discussed the dispersion compensation technology, through modeling and simulation analysis of the dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) and dispersion compensation module (DCM), at the same time with reference to its OTN equipment dispersion tolerance, form a light layer of dispersion compensation quantity calculation method of the experience and grid OTN networking dispersion compensation scheme, reduce the effects of dispersion as far as possible.

At present, there are many kinds of professional application systems for equipment management in the field of Power System, so the level of their automation and intelligence is relatively high. But Management and Monitoring of outdoor lines are still staying the same as traditional methods, becoming a vulnerable part in smart grid. This paper introduces a network management system of electric power optic cables based on GIS and referred to the design method of Transmission Network Management System (TNMS). Its aims and several main developing technologies are also discussed. This system will play an important role in improving maintenance management and operational reliability for the power communication network.

The standardization of grayscale display is essentially significant for image signal communication, transmission, and terminal reading. The key step of this standardization is establishing a traceable equipment of grayscale. As a relative value, grayscale is transferred to two different absolute values to satisfy different traceability methods, including optical density for hardcopy image and luminance for softcopy. For luminance, a generation equipment is designed to build the relationship between luminance and grayscale. In this work, novel equipment is established using digital light processing (DLP) by time-frequency modulation, and the corresponding uncertainty is analyzed. The experiment result shows that this digital equipment builds the relationship between grayscale and luminance in the range of 0.16-4000 cd/m2. It enables traceable measurement of grayscale to luminance on this equipment with high accuracy and can provide a standardized reference for the display of grayscale images in the fields of medicine, remote sensing, non-destructive testing, etc.

The main challenge faced in today's telecommunication is the ever increasing demand for bandwidth and data rates. The desire to expand the capacity of fiber optic communication to accommodate this demand accelerated the development of high capacity Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transmission equipment. However, nonlinear impairments are the fundamental limiting mechanisms to the amount of data that can be transmitted in DWDM. In DWDM, Four Wave Mixing is the most critical of nonlinear effects in fibre optics communication. This effect limits the DWDM’s channel capacity. There are numerous researches on nonlinear impairments that show the intricacy of FWM phenomena in DWDM system. This article present review of the several measures which have been carried out by researchers to overcome nonlinear effects in DWDM. Such measures include Modulation Formats, Channel Spacing, Channel Shuffling Algorithm and Electro-Optic Phase Modulation. The review provides insight into the methods, parameters and approaches used by other researchers. This will pave way for can thus lead to significant improvement in the design of DWDM system.

The researched employs modular structure, integrated function, and blended multiple communication interfaces for the key technologies of monitoring 128 modules. By using the technologies, speech path and signaling are able to transmit simultaneously. Then the research establishes the on-line monitoring system which integrates the functions of real-time monitoring of terminal offices on optical cable line and end machine, automatic dispatching of circuits, and maintenance test for optical transportation equipment. By applying the system on-line, the research verifies that the functions and technical indexes of the system meet its design requirements.

A wireless temperature monitoring system based on fluorescence lifetime is researched in this paper, which mainly consists of the temperature acquisition unit and the master control monitoring unit. The wireless module with the core of low-power microcontroller (SX1212) and the sensor based on optical-fiber fluorescence are designed. And the unit of fluorescence temperature measurement is introduced in detail. Testing result indicates that the communication distance of the wireless module can be up to 300 meters, which meets the requirements very well. There are many advantages in this system, such as no wiring, better scalability, real-time monitoring.

Abstract In this work, the optical theory of physics helps to understand, analyze, and calculate the received power in a fifth-generation mobile telecommunications receiver. In these communication systems there are statistical models and deterministic physical models. We investigated how diffuse scattering in reflection contributes to specular reflection in received power at a receiver due to materials in the propagating environment in a communication channel using millimeter waves. The dimensions of building construction materials have sizes comparable to wavelength at millimeter wave frequencies. The power transmitted by communication equipment can be reflected in the roughness of these apparently smooth materials or spread out in multiple directions. The results show that the contribution due to diffuse scattering must be considered and that deterministic physical models using optical theory are valid and improve predictive analysis with good fit. With these results, the physical theory allows to make software with high precision and that improves the current applications.

Abstract. Gaining information on climatic conditions in subway tunnels is the key to predicting the propagation of smoke or toxic gases in these infrastructures in the case of a fire or a terrorist attack. As anemometer measurements are not economically suitable, the employment of alternative monitoring methods is necessary. High-resolution temperature sensing with Raman optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) using optical communication fiber cables shows great potential as it allows the surveillance of several kilometers of underground transport facilities without the need for installing sensing equipment in the tunnels. This paper presents first results of a study using this approach for monitoring subway tunnels. In the Berlin subway, temperature data gathered from newly installed as well as pre-installed communication cables were evaluated and compared to reference data from temperature loggers. Results are very promising as high correlations between all data can be achieved showing the potential of this approach.

Consider the option of building the last miles to telecom operators, in accordance with the requirements for the construction of the last miles of control centers in the power industry. A variant is proposed for constructing a typical network node of the last miles of the control center, taking into account all the necessary interfaces for the transmission of dispatch telephone communication channels, telemetry information transmission channels, as well as service communication channels and information exchange between electric power entities and dispatch centers. A variant of the construction and topology of the last miles of the control center, methods of reservation of channels to access nodes are described. All types and types of interfaces that are necessary to use for the organization of dispatch communication channels and the transmission of telemetric information in the dispatch centers of the regional level have been determined. The use of various types of interfaces for service purposes is described in detail. Separate types of interfaces are used for voice transmission and for dispatch communication channels with objects. The variants of using analog interfaces for transmitting telemetry information via corresponding communication channels, which are used for cent equipment with analog outputs, are described. There are several types of redundancy of communication channels to ensure uninterrupted operation of the control center and to exclude the possibility of disabling the main and backup channels at the same time when working with a particular object. The redundancy of the hardware is carried out by installing additional cards in the equipment of the nodes in the cold reserve. Power redundancy is carried out due to the presence of at least two power supply units of the equipment for connection from two different sources of the uninterruptible power supply system. There is a reserve for the optical fibers of the last miles to the access nodes, which in turn allows you to change the transport transmission line in case of failure of the current one.

Nowadays, wireless communication technologies are employed in medical body area networks to enhance flexibility and convenience for caregivers and patients. However, there is always the risk of disturbance from electromagnetic waves toward precision medical equipment. This study demonstrates a novel design and implementation of a medical healthcare information system using the emerging wireless visible light communication (VLC) technology. VLC technology can be implemented using visible light emitting diodes (LED), which is expected to be the main lighting source in the near future due to its energy efficient characteristic compared to conventional incandescent and fluorescent lighting. By manipulating the fast switching characteristic of LEDs, these lighting devices can be used simultaneously for illumination and wireless data communication. The prototype design of the VLC-based medical healthcare system can be used to provide data service and monitoring in radio frequency restricted hospital areas. High brightness LED (HB-LED) is used in the transmitter module to transmit medical and healthcare information using optical modulation method. High speed photodetector is used to detect the optical signal, then the signal is demodulated and conditioned at the receiver module. Medical caregivers or patients can download the biomedical data and healthcare information using a portable device with attached optical sensor.

Fiber amplifier is an important piece of equipment to ensure the long-distance communication of optical fiber. The rare-earth ion-doped fiber amplifier is a hot issue studied in many articles. However, few articles investigate Neodymium-doped fiber amplifiers for 1.7μm optical signal amplification because of the low signal gain. Therefore, this paper establishes the system model of Neodymium ion to realize the optical signal amplification in the 1.7μm band. It establishes its mathematical model by using the equation of rate and power transmission equation and solves it numerically to realize the numerical simulation of Neodymium-doped fiber amplifier for 1.7μm optical signal amplification, and studies the simulation results, summarizes the amplifier properties, and fits the results to get the mathematical expressions. This paper finds that the plot of gain variation with fiber position contains a linear asymptote with a slope less than zero. The asymptote is related to the initial signal light and the optical power of the pump. Increasing the doping concentration will cause the optical signal to converge to this asymptote faster. The numerical fitting results in this paper can be applied to the estimation of gains as well as to generate insights into theoretical studies, such as considering the possibility of applying the Weber distribution commonly used for infinite optical communication in fiber models.

Nowadays, one of the trends of information and communication networks development is the provision within the shortest time of a larger number of telecommunication services to network users. Currently, connection of subscribers to xDSL communication channels provided by public switched telephone networks (PSTN) is widespread. Providers of classic telephony make active use of these networks due to the low cost of the connection of a subscriber. An obvious disadvantage of this connection type is the limited data transfer rate. Some Internet providers rapidly develop ETTH (Ethernet To The Home) networks. The advantage of ETTH networks is the targeting of the delivery of communication services to subscribers. One of the disadvantages is the operation of a network at the Ethernet level with all typical for this protocol features. The practice of optical networking has existed for many years; however, the basic approach to optical networking is based on the use of active equipment from the access node to users. PON-based (Passive Optical Network) FTTH architecture (Fiber To The Home) is as a rule, compatible with the Ethernet Protocol. The article shows the advantages of the deployment of PON-based FTTH networks, in particular, saving of fiber-optic lines in the area from the optical splitters to the Central telephone exchange or access point by using relevant ports. The article provides the description of access networks architecture applying Ethernet FTTH and PON technologies, and also discusses the prospects for further development of the above mentioned networks.

Quantum communication offers long-term security especially, but not only, relevant to government and industrial users. It is worth noting that, for the first time in the history of cryptographic encoding, we are currently in the situation that secure communication can be based on the fundamental laws of physics (information theoretical security) rather than on algorithmic security relying on the complexity of algorithms, which is periodically endangered as standard computer technology advances. On a fundamental level, the security of quantum key distribution (QKD) relies on the non-orthogonality of the quantum states used. So even coherent states are well suited for this task, the quantum states that largely describe the light generated by laser systems. Depending on whether one uses detectors resolving single or multiple photon states or detectors measuring the field quadratures, one speaks of, respectively, a discrete- or a continuous-variable description. Continuous-variable QKD with coherent states uses a technology that is very similar to the one employed in classical coherent communication systems, the backbone of today’s Internet connections. Here, we review recent developments in this field in two connected regimes: (i) improving QKD equipment by implementing front-end telecom devices and (ii) research into satellite QKD for bridging long distances by building upon existing optical satellite links. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Quantum technology for the 21st century’.

The prediction of conducted EMI is to effectively guide the design of EMI filters. On the one hand, the selection of commonmode capacitance and inductance values can be guided by the analysis of propagation path impedance; on the other hand, various passive devices are analyzed by simulation the influence of parasitic parameters on conducted EMI can guide the selection of filter capacitors and inductors. In this paper, we take the widely used switching power supply as an example, a novel EMI conduction modelling is proposed, the impedance analysis method is used to model the high-frequency parasitic parameters, the model was built for predicting the conducted EMI accurately of switching power supply.

Markas Komando Brimob uses optical fiber as a transmission media in the design of the Sistem Informasi dan Administrasi Brimob (SIAB) communication network. Optical fiber has a large transmission capacity, therefore fiber optic networks are implemented on network of SIAB. This facility includes withdrawal of fiber optic cable from Mako Brimob to seven points, namely Pool Mako, Mako Gegana, Pool Bengkel Gegana, Detasemen Gegana, Pool KBR, Pool Pelopor, and Danpas Pelopor. The design of the SIAB network is adjusted to the needs of the Mako Brimob such as: 10-10 of BER, 100 Mbps of data speed, and 1310 nm of wavelength. The optical equipment used were single fiber optic tube loosen mode, PIN photodiode light detector, optical laser diode, and SC connector. From the power link analysis, the maximum distance without using an optical amplifier was 491.9 km. Then, the maximum speed was 896 Mbps measured using rise time budget. Because the probe beam wavelength shortening and directional strengthen, so that the laser radar has very strong space, time resolution and high detection sensitivity and other advantages, Laser radar has been widely applied in the atmosphere, ocean, land and in other target detection. Optoelectronic isolator is usually used in electronic circuit device, but the ns order of magnitude of the high-speed triggering and synchronization is more difficult, while the synchronization of laser radar and laser communication is in the order of ns. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a high speed optical trigger, which can realize the high speed synchronization of emission laser and receiving circuit in laser radar, and delay time is within 150ns, that can provide protection to obtain synchronous valid data.

Topological photonic crystal provides a platform for robust energy transport in photonic systems. In this letter, we propose a method for realizing rainbow trapping and releasing based on the topologically protected defect modes in dielectric photonic crystals. The photonic states of different frequencies are separated and trapped at different positions to form the topological rainbow. The all-dielectric planar nanostructures consist of deformed honeycomb lattices and a gradient 1D array, which is distinct from previous platforms where edge states appear at the interface between trivial and nontrivial crystals. Due to the simplification of the configuration, we can selectively control the stop position of the wave by modifying the bottom row of dielectric rods so that light can switch between the trapping state and releasing state. The robustness of the slowing light system is also investigated. These results are beneficial to multiple frequency tuning. The simplified structure could offer a novel method for micro-miniaturizing and applying optical communication equipment, such as optical storage and optical buffer.

Surrounding sound is a powerful data source for investigating urban and non-urban ecosystem health, and researchers commonly use robust but expensive passive sensors as monitoring equipment to capture it. This paper comprehensively describes the hardware behind our low-cost, small multipurpose prototype, capable of monitoring different environments (e.g., remote locations) with onboard processing power. The device consists of a printed circuit board, microprocessor, local memory, environmental sensor, microphones, optical sensors and LoRa (Long Range) communication systems. The device was successfully used in different use cases, from monitoring mosquitoes enhanced with optical sensors to ocean activities using a hydrophone.

Problem statement. In recent years, the problem of replacing copper-core fiber-optic cables has become particularly relevant. This is due to two factors: first, the prospect of introducing unmanned vehicles and the development of electromagnetic microwave weapons that can disable electronic equipment for almost any target at a distance of 10 km or more, and second, the growing need to reduce the delay of transmitted signals on the network and increase the volume of information transmitted in these networks. The article describes the construction of onboard cable networks using fiberoptic cables. The advantages and disadvantages of fiber-optic based onboard networks are described.Objective. Development of solutions for the use of fiber-optic communication cables in onboard information networks that provide high technology for laying optical cables, the required speed of information transmission, ease of operation and modernization of information networks.Results. A comprehensive solution for building onboard information networks based on fiber-optic cables having an increased core diameter and an optimized refractive index profile in pipelines using pneumatic laying technology is proposed.Practical implications. The proposed integrated solution for onboard fiber-optic information networks, including a method for onboard laying optical cables, the use of specially developed optical fiber with an increased core diameter and reduced differential modal delay, and the development of modular telecommunications equipment, allows meeting the requirements for onboard networks to ensure reliability and safety, economic efficiency, reduce labor intensity, and ease of maintenance, components dismantling and replacement.

An increasing number of communication and computational schemes with quantum advantages have recently been proposed, which implies that quantum technology has fertile application prospects. However, demonstrating these schemes experimentally continues to be a central challenge because of the difficulty in preparing high-dimensional states or highly entangled states. In this study, we introduce and analyze a quantum coupon collector protocol by employing coherent states and simple linear optical elements, which was successfully demonstrated using realistic experimental equipment. We showed that our protocol can significantly reduce the number of samples needed to learn a specific set compared with the classical limit of the coupon collector problem. We also discuss the potential values and expansions of the quantum coupon collector by constructing a quantum blind box game. The information transmitted by the proposed game also broke the classical limit. These results strongly prove the advantages of quantum mechanics in machine learning and communication complexity.

Abstract Inter-satellite communication based on lasers (LIC) is a possible choice for future satellite networks because to ultra-high capacity and speed systems that may be achieved using compact, light-weight, and low-power optical equipment. The performance of a 64 × 40 GB/s optical wireless system with polarisation diversity for dense WDM is investigated in this research paper. Using a DWDM system with a channel spacing of 50 GHz, a high-speed system is achieved to meet the broad bandwidth needs of data services in satellites. A polarisation diversity approach is implemented in the system to decrease polarisation crosstalk and nonlinearities among nearby WDM channels. Furthermore, a comparison of the polarisation interleaved and traditional DWDM-OWC systems is performed. In addition, it was discovered that a system with varying states of polarisation across neighbouring channels performs better in terms of Q-factor and BER than a traditional system.

Abstract Smart personal protective equipment (PPE) is the future of improved occupational health and safety, and nanotechnology facilitates the development of critical smart PPE components such as smart textiles, wearable/flexible electronics, and augmented reality among others. Smart PPE utilizes sensing and communication technology in a way that is non-intrusive to either improve workplace safety or enhance occupational capabilities. The development of such smart PPE requires a multidisciplinary approach. This paper investigates the current state of PPE technologies for firefighters, healthcare workers, police/military, and construction workers. The modern PPE needs are identified from both end user surveys as well as expert third-party studies. There are already some smart PPE solutions for the challenges identified. Recent advances in stretchable and textile-based electronics, enabled by nanotechnology, demonstrate almost all imaginable solutions to the unmet needs that PPE users and expert advisor groups have identified. However, integration into smart PPE requires attention to the unique harsh conditions of hazardous workplaces. This review aims to inspire researchers in the field of flexible and printed electronics to develop and improve future smart PPE.

Optical technologies for measuring electrical quantities attract great attention due to their unique properties and significant advantages over other technologies used in high-voltage electric power industry: the use of optical fibers ensures high stability of measuring equipment to electromagnetic interference and galvanic isolation of high-voltage sensors; external electromagnetic fields do not influence the data transmitted from optical sensors via fiber-optic communication lines; problems associated with ground loops are eliminated, there are no side electromagnetic radiation and crosstalk between the channels. The structure and operation principle of a quasi-distributed fiber-optic high-voltage monitoring system is presented. The sensitive element is a combination of a piezo-ceramic tube with an optical fiber wound around it. The device uses reverse transverse piezoelectric effect. The measurement principle is based on recording the change in the recirculation frequency under the applied voltage influence. When the measuring sections are arranged in ascending order of the measured effective voltages relative to the receiving-transmitting unit, a relative resolution of 0,3–0,45 % is achieved for the PZT-5H and 0,8–1,2 % for the PZT-4 in the voltage range 20–150 kV.
