Maintenance is one of the central issues in operational activities, which involve any type of equipment. In this paper we have considered analysis, modeling, and scheduling of preventive maintenance operations for fuel dispensers in a chain of gas stations. A gas station company with more than 570 dispensers in more than 40 stations is considered and the maintenance problem is studied in detail. Operations research tools, including maintenance models and linear programming, were used to establish optimum schedules for preventive maintenance operations. Detailed cost analyses were carried out to determine feasibility of the proposed preventive maintenance schedules. Models and procedures presented in this paper could guide operation engineers and maintenance managers in solving similar problems for operational improvements.

Quay cranes are particular transportation devices for which operation's safety and CRAMP parameters (Cost, Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Productivity) should be fulfilled with regard to a harbor maintenance strategy. The maintenance process is first considered within a holistic modeling framework in order to cope with the current practices of treating strategic, operational and engineering maintenance issues independently without taking into account their interactions within an entire Enterprise System. Proactive maintenance is then highlighted as a new model aiming to globally optimize the components operation parameters throughout three interacting prognosis, diagnosis and monitoring processes. Technical issues related to Intelligent Maintenance System are finally proposed in order to support proactive maintenance operations at the enterprise field level and applied to quay cranes in a particular site within the frame of the European Eureka ‘Robcrane' project.

Purpose – Asset management has recently gained significance due to emerging business models such as Product Service Systems where the sale of asset use, rather than the sale of the asset itself, is applied. This leaves the responsibility of the maintenance tasks to fall on the shoulders of the manufacturer/supplier to provide high asset availability. The use of asset monitoring assists in providing high availability but the level of monitoring and maintenance needs to be assessed for cost effectiveness. There is a lack of available tools and understanding of their value in assessing monitoring levels. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This research aims to develop a dynamic modelling approach using Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to assess such maintenance systems in order to provide a better understanding of the behaviour of complex maintenance operations. Interviews were conducted and literature was analysed to gather modelling requirements. Generic models were created, followed by simulation models, to examine how maintenance operation systems behave regarding different levels of asset monitoring. Findings – This research indicates that DES discerns varying levels of complexity of maintenance operations but that more sophisticated asset monitoring levels will not necessarily result in a higher asset performance. The paper shows that it is possible to assess the impact of monitoring levels as well as make other changes to system operation that may be more or less effective. Practical implications – The proposed tool supports the maintenance operations decision makers to select the appropriate asset monitoring level that suits their operational needs. Originality/value – A novel DES approach was developed to assess asset monitoring levels for maintenance operations. In applying this quantitative approach, it was demonstrated that higher asset monitoring levels do not necessarily result in higher asset availability. The work provides a means of evaluating the constraints in the system that an asset is part of rather than focusing on the asset in isolation.

In engineering, a design is best described based on its alternative performance operation. In this paper, an electric power plant is analysed based on its effective operational performance even during critical situation or crisis. Data is generated and analysed using both quantitative and qualitative research approach. During maintenance operation of an electric power plant, some components are susceptible to wide range of issues or crises. These includes natural disasters, supply chain disruptions, cyberattacks, and economic downturns. These crises significantly impact power plant operations and its maintenance strategies. Also, the reliable operation of power plants is often challenged by various technical, operational, and environmental issues. In this research, an investigation is conducted on the problems associated with electric power plants by proposing a comprehensive and novel framework to maintenance the power plant during crises. Based on the achieved results discussed, the framework impact and contribution are the integration of proactive maintenance planning, resilient maintenance strategies, advanced technologies, and adaptive measures to ensure the reliability and resilience of electric power plant during power generation operations in the face of unforeseen challenges/crisis. Hypothetical inferences are used ranging from mechanical failures to environmental constraints. The research also presents a structured approach to ensure continuous operation and effective maintenance in the electric power plant, particularly during crisis (such as environmental issues and COVID-19 pandemic issues).

Abstract An important step in preparing a military operation is the planning one where resource requirements and related costs are assessed needed to conduct it under optimal conditions. One of the most important issues to be considered at this stage is that concerning the means of warfare which are necessary for fulfilling the tasks of the military operation. In this regard both the types of combat capabilities that are required and the number of each type of combat capabilities should be established. After evaluating the necessary means of combat, an important aspect to be considered is that of ensuring the maintenance service for the means of combat planned to participate in military operations. In this study, based on technical specifications related to maintenance operations to be carried out to maintain the operational state of combat means is shown, depending on the tasks to be fulfilled within the military operation, a way of assessing maintenance needs in order to design a plan to ensure optimal maintenance service.

Background: Reverse supply chains of machinery and equipment face significant challenges, and overcoming them is critical for effective customer service and sustainable operation. Maintenance and repair services, strongly associated with the reverse movement of equipment, are among the most demanding reverse supply chain operations. Equipment is scattered in various locations, and multiple suppliers are involved in its maintenance, making it challenging to manage the related reverse supply chain operations. Effective maintenance is essential for businesses-owners of the equipment, as reducing costs while improving service quality helps them gain a competitive advantage. Methods: To enhance reverse supply chain operations related to equipment maintenance, this paper presents the operational framework, the methodological approach, and the architecture for developing a system that covers the needs for predictive maintenance in the service supply chain. It is based on Industry 4.0 technologies, such as the Internet of things, machine learning, and cloud computing. Results: As a result of the successful implementation of the system, effective equipment maintenance and service supply chain management is achieved supporting the reverse supply chain. Conclusions: This will eventually lead to fewer good-conditioned spare part replacements, just in time replacements, extended equipment life cycles, and fewer unnecessary disposals.

Purpose In the present context of globalization, maintenance of production systems is very important. A lot of organizations are facing many problems in maintenance management. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the main problems in maintenance operations and compare these problems with those in manufacturing operations as found in the literature for effective maintenance. Design/methodology/approach To identify the main problems in maintenance operations and to compare them with those in manufacturing operations, a large amount of published literature was studied. The paper systematically categorizes the published literature and then analyzes and reviews it theoretically. Findings Lack of top management support, lack of measurement of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), lack of strategic planning and implementation and many more problems are biggest problems in the maintenance operations as well as manufacturing operations. These have emerged as top problems in the implementation of effective maintenance strategies in industries. Research limitations/implications From the findings, the authors can conclude that for good maintenance, top management is supposed to be supportive in taking different initiatives. Industrial organizations should focus on improving overall performance of machines identified as OEE rather than only productivity of machines. This paper will be extremely useful for the researchers, maintenance professionals and others concerned with maintenance to understand the significance of maintenance problems in industries. Originality/value These findings will be highly useful for professionals from the manufacturing sector in implementing effective maintenance strategy in the maintenance management system.

Remote monitoring and control systems enable real-time data collection and decision-making, enhancing operational visibility and efficiency. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) offer the capability to conduct inspections and repairs in remote and hazardous environments, reducing human intervention and associated risks. Robotics and automation further streamline maintenance tasks, improving accuracy and reducing downtime. Advanced materials and coatings enhance equipment durability and corrosion resistance, prolonging asset lifecycles and reducing maintenance requirements. In parallel, optimized work methods offer strategic approaches to enhance subsea operations' effectiveness. Predictive maintenance strategies leverage data analytics and machine learning to anticipate equipment failures, enabling proactive interventions and minimizing downtime. Condition-based monitoring facilitates real-time assessment of asset health, enabling timely maintenance interventions and cost savings. Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) is a unit at the airport that is responsible for handling aviation and fire emergencies. This study discusses the maintenance and care of ARFF vehicles at the airport. Maintenance is interpreted as an activity carried out systematically to ensure that facilities function effectively and efficiently. Maintenance includes preventive and corrective actions to maintain the operational readiness of ARFF vehicles. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of vehicle maintenance and care on firefighting operations. This study also aims to determine the maintenance and care of vehicles that affect readiness in carrying out firefighting operations and their impacts. The method used in this study is a literature review (library research), which involves collecting and analyzing data from various relevant literature sources. This study focuses on previous studies on the maintenance and care of ARFF vehicles and their influence on the effectiveness of firefighting operations. The results of the study show that good maintenance and care have a positive effect on firefighting operations. Regular maintenance and systematic maintenance increase the reliability of ARFF vehicles, so that responses to emergency situations can be carried out quickly and effectively. Therefore, better personnel training and more detailed maintenance planning are needed to improve operational performance.

The scope of this study comprehends problems associated with modern urban vehicles known as cable propelled gondolas system operations in icing conditions. The aspects under consideration are problems related to the operations, safety, and maintenance of cable car systems in harsh climate conditions. The geographical location of the gondola cars makes them vulnerable to severe weather conditions especially in cold climates of the northern hemisphere, where icing on its components is an operational, maintenance, and safety concern. The harsh climate conditions can cause unadorned malfunctions posing a threat to the integrity the of system as well as a high risk to human safety. The study basis on the identification of these problems in operational, maintenance and safety domain including implications the industry faces in the form of severe accidents costing precious lives and lost capital. Furthermore, it incorporates the ice detection, anti/de-icing approaches as well as the safety strategies in use nowadays. The massive increase in operations and dynamic climate conditions gondola cars require serious attention. This study unsheathes serious underlying problems that severely affect the gondola operations, makes them prone to major maintenance shutdowns and poses high risk to structural and human safety. The identified problems in this study and severity of risks draw attention to need for practicable solutions incorporating de-icing and ice removal techniques for safe operation of gondolas in cold climates saving time, effort, inconvenience, and prodigious lost capital.

Abstract In future, offshore wind turbines may be consider a crucial part in the supply of energy. Maintenance processes are directed to attain a safe and reliable operation of offshore machines and wind turbines. In this paper, an opportunistic maintenance strategy for offshore wind turbine is proposed, considering imperfect maintenance and the preventive maintenance durations. Reliability Centric Maintenance serves as a proactive tactic to operations and maintenance by inhibiting the possible reasons of poor performance and controlling failures. Other components can implement the opportunistic preventive maintenances if one component has reached its reliability threshold. According to the rolling horizon approach, it is of great importance to update the maintenance planning for the sake of the short-term information. By figuring out the best combination, the maintenance schedule in the mission time has been finally determined. Failure information are obtained from previous studies to accomplish the calculations. The outcomes indicate that the maintenance cost has been dramatically reduced through the application of opportunistic maintenance.

Abstract As the installed capacity of individual turbines increases, so do costs associated with manufacture and maintenance. One proposed solution to this problem is the Multi-Rotor System (MRS) which utilises many small rotors to yield the same energy capture as a single large turbine. The operational advantage of the MRS is the built in redundancy between rotors on the same structure. However, despite this advantage, an increase in number of components is likely to result in an increase in transfers. This work examines the balance between additional crew and vessel requirements for such a structure against the expected savings in downtime due to redundancy and small rotor power rating. Three scenarios are analysed to determine the distribution of the failures which contribute to downtime. The study aims to find the optimal vessel fleet which limits downtime without drastically increasing direct operational expenditure (OpEx). As site size increases, the impact of global failures, which shut down the whole asset, is lessened. However, there is a significant increase in the number of vessels required to reduce downtime to <10% of the total OpEx. While a large fleet can offer significant downtime savings, there are practical limitations and challenges which must be acknowledged.

The integration of LLM (Large Language Model) into the intelligent operations and maintenance of SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Networks) is comprehensively explored. As the scale of the network continues to expand and its complexity increases, traditional operation and maintenance methods can no longer meet efficient and accurate requirements. Therefore, LLM technology was introduced, and the intelligent operation and maintenance of the data center network were realized by leveraging its powerful natural language processing capabilities. The importance and shortcomings of SD-WAN and the application scenarios of LLM in network operation and maintenance are first introduced, followed by an elaboration on how LLM can be used for network configuration, network optimization, network maintenance, and network security risk management. Through specific analysis, the significant effect of LLM in enhancing the efficiency and quality of operation and maintenance has been demonstrated. Finally, the advantages and challenges of employing LLM for intelligent network operation and maintenance are summarized, and future research directions are anticipated.

A decrease in irrigation network performance system operation and maintenance are the impact of the operation management system and irrigation maintenance which does not suitable with the technical demands of the irrigation network design. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the application of quality management system in ministry of public works to the quality of the operations and maintenance on the Tasks Operation and Maintenance. The object of the research was in Kedung Asem and Bodri Irrigation Area, it was seen from three variables, namely: (1) the management of resources, (2) the implementation of the activities, (3) measurement, analysis and improvement. Data were obtained from observation andquestionnaire, and then were processed by using descriptive method and linear regression method. The results says that the quality management system in resource management is perceived as good enough category; the implementation activities, measurement, analysis and improvement were perceived good by the respondents. Identification of the quality of the operations and maintenance were also perceived good; further, performance index ratings of irrigation systems are performing well. This paper presents a complex product design-manufacturing-operations and maintenance integration method based on digital twin technology. This method aims to solve the problem of information silos in the design, manufacturing and operation and maintenance phases of complex products in the context of intelligent manufacturing and to integrate the design, manufacturing and operation and maintenance processes of complex products. To address the integration needs of complex product design, manufacturing, operation and maintenance business integration, a framework for complex product design-manufacturing-operation and maintenance integration based on the digital twin is first proposed, in addition to designing a model and operation mechanism for combining the virtual and real of the digital twin model. Then, the implementation of multistage collaborative design technology, data intelligent sensing technology, and data integration and fusion technology for the digital twin-based design-manufacturing-operations and maintenance integration processes are analyzed and discussed. Finally, a case study involving the fault prediction of key components of the bogie of an EMU demonstrated the integrated mode of operation in the design-manufacture-operation and maintenance process of the EMU. It verified the effectiveness of the proposed framework, process and methodology.

There is an inherent risk in transitioning project personnel out and transitioning the incoming operating crew in with minimal disruption to operations and ensuring the integrity of the design. The key to mitigating this risk is to execute operational readiness assurance (ORA) processes, which provide confidence that a facility has seamless transition from design into operation, and that production targets are met in the first years of the asset's life. It is a rigorous process spanning engineering, construction, commissioning, handover, and operations; this ensures confidence in operation and asset life cost. This extended abstract focuses on a proven methodology to this aspect; it is highlighted using the Atomic Model approach, which is being implemented on the Wheatstone Processing Platform for Chevron. The atomic model consists of a nucleus (operability, reliability, and maintainability [ORM]) that provides the positive charge that will hold the whole process together; it also presents a consistent and operable asset to the operations and maintenance crew. The electrons—being the component parts—include competency, process safety, process control, operating and maintenance procedures, and maintenance management system. Together, these fully ensure operability. The enemy of ORM is complexity and the Atomic Model is a systematic approach to this complexity. Implemented by a team that views the project holistically, this approach produces a facility that is operated and maintained in a uniform manner. This consistent and disciplined approach to operations, maintenance, and reliability is the positive charge needed in the nucleus for the path towards seamless start-up.

Airspace control systems introduced automation into functions previously performed by human operators. This situation increased the dependence on the availability of computer systems, in which degraded operation events can reduce the service level at any controlled airspace. This paper presents a relationship between availability and allocation of human resources in these centers, where maintenance and operations personnel are occasionally asked to repair losses caused by automated functions. A simulation model for the Arena tool is presented, to access availability, and then the operational point of view is explored, focusing on the required availability scenarios. The results presented herein can help determine the size of operations and maintenance teams, considering the reliability and maintainability parameters of airspace control systems.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been widely used in different industries in recent years but its use in the aviation industry has been very limited. In this article, the use of RFID technology is explored in relationship to airlines’ maintenance operations. The main objectives of this article are to assess the current use of RFID in aviation maintenance and to evaluate future opportunities as well as the barriers to this technology in regards to airline maintenance operations. To this end, a survey of airlines was conducted in 2013. The results show that the airline industry has recently taken notice of RFID and that its use is growing. The results also show that airlines are facing several barriers for RFID implementations . They are: lack of knowledge, cost of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) integration, cost of tags, lack of support from managers, and immaturity of technology. This research has also identified the categories of parts that can benefit the most from RFID.

The occurrence of unexpected aircraft maintenance tasks can produce expensive changes in an airline’s operation. When it comes to critical tasks, it might even cancel programmed flights. Despite this, the challenge of scheduling aircraft maintenance operations under uncertainty has received limited attention in the scientific literature. We study a dynamic airline maintenance scheduling problem, which daily decides the set of aircraft to maintain and the set of pending tasks to execute in each aircraft. The objective is to minimize the expected costs of expired maintenance tasks over the operating horizon. To increase flexibility and reduce costs, we integrate maintenance scheduling with tail assignment decisions. We formulate our problem as a Markov decision process and design dynamic policies based on approximate dynamic programming, including value function approximation, rolling horizon techniques, and a hybrid policy between the latter two that delivers the best results. In a case study based on LATAM airline, we show the value of dynamic optimization by testing our best policies against a simple airline decision rule and a deterministic relaxation with perfect future information. We suggest to schedule tasks requiring less resources first to increase utilization of residual maintenance capacity. Finally, we observe strong economies of scale when sharing maintenance resources between multiple airlines.

The study reveals that poor maintenance, lack of professionalism, and inadequate funding are significant contributors to building dilapidation. Furthermore, effective operations and maintenance involve regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and timely repairs. The findings have implications for building managers, policymakers, and stakeholders in the Nigerian building industry.

Purpose This paper aims to explore how maintenance tasks can be planned and executed in a smarter way and, consequently, how the operations and maintenance of offshore wind power installations can be improved through modularisation. Design/methodology/approach This is a case study of one of Europe’s leading offshore wind power operators with more than 1,000 wind turbine generators in operation. By focusing on this company, in-depth insights into its operations and maintenance processes are investigated. Findings Lean is identified to constitute an important first step before the modularisation of maintenance tasks. The modularisation of the maintenance of offshore wind farms is identified to reduce preventive maintenance times. Practical implications The paper develops a process to identify the resources needed for maintenance before the modularisation of maintenance tasks and resources can take place. The authors also establish a foundation for the development of a software tool to support the development of the modularisation of maintenance tasks. Originality/value The present study contributes to the rather immature field of research on the operations and maintenance of offshore wind power. Furthermore, it adds to the emerging research area of service modularity.

The operation and maintenance management of telecom platforms puts more emphasis on operation and alarm monitoring and less on business flow, and it is difficult to have a seamless connection between operation and maintenance and sales. To improve the cooperative efficiency and the informatization level of telecom platform operation and maintenance, a new operation and maintenance system integrating Apriori association rules for a telecom platform is proposed. In this paper, the Apriori algorithm is firstly used to analyse the fault correlation of the operation and maintenance system of the telecommunications platform to get the alarm message. Then, the fault risk of the operation and maintenance platform is evaluated intelligently by the system-business alarm causality model. Finally, based on the fixed end and the mobile end, the dynamic presentation of the system running state and alarm monitoring, device query and positioning, and online and offline inspection are implemented and designed, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed operation and maintenance systems integrating Apriori association rules for the telecom platform innovate the cooperative mode between the operations and sales team, and the average time reduces to 3.9 minutes from 4.7 minutes and the risk forecasting accuracy increases from 8% to 26%. The assumed method can significantly improve the operational efficiency and intelligent level of the telecom platform’s system and business.

The article considers the application of the logical-mathematical apparatus for the formalization of maintenance, administration and restoration of software during the operation of automated information and telecommunications systems and complexes. It is shown that researchers when considering the problems of software operation mainly focus on improving the maintenance, maintenance and reengineering of software, in particular on the description of the sequence of interconnected processes, methods and tools of software maintenance, software operation in terms of its reliability, the need for methods and means of identifying design defects, as well as forecasting the number of errors during operation of information systems The paper presents a logical scheme of the software maintenance process, which reflects the logic of solving problems and, in its basis, represents a set of logically ordered design procedures in the form of systems of sets and relations. For the formal presentation of the technological process of software maintenance of automated information and telecommunication systems and complexes, its decomposition is used. The design of the technological process of software support is expressed through morphological, informational and mathematical models. The paper formulates the relationship of following, equivalence, compatibility and interaction, which allow to establish and formalize the relationship between technological objects involved in the process of appointment (design) of technological operations for the administration of software for automated information and telecommunications systems and create prerequisites for development of formalized conditions for the synthesis of design solutions. Purpose – The demand for contracts on assets availability has increased. Recently published papers show that the use of asset health monitoring technologies is being encouraged to improve the asset performance. This is based on reason rather than analysis. This paper aims to understand and assess the effect of different types of business processes for maintenance resource levels on the behaviour of the maintenance operations and asset availability located at different customer locations using different asset monitoring levels. Design/methodology/approach – A discrete event simulation (DES) model was developed to mimic complex maintenance operations with different monitoring levels (reactive, diagnostics, and prognostics). The model was created to understand and assess the influence of resources (labour and spare parts) on a particular maintenance operation. The model was created to represent different levels of asset monitoring to be applied in a case study. Subsequently, different levels of spare parts (ranging from deficient inventory to a plentiful spares inventory) and labour were applied to show the effects of those resources on the asset availability. Findings – This research has found that the DES was able to discern different processes for asset monitoring levels in complex maintenance operations. It also provided numerical evidence about applying such asset monitoring levels and proved that the higher asset monitoring level does not always guarantee higher asset availability. Practical implications – The developed model is a unique model that can provide the decision makers of maintenance operations with numerical evidence to select an appropriate asset monitoring level based on their particular maintenance operations. Originality/value – A novel DES model was developed to support maintenance operations decision makers in selecting the appropriate asset monitoring level for their particular operations. This unique approach provides numerical evidence rather than reasoning, and also proves that the higher asset monitoring level does not always guarantee higher asset availability.

The conclusion shows that intelligent operation and maintenance can provide a new idea for urban traffic and has a broad application prospect. Modern avionics can account for around 30% of the total cost of the aircraft. Therefore, it is essential to reduce the operational cost of avionics during a lifetime. This article addresses the critical scientific problem of creating the appropriate maintenance models for digital avionics systems that significantly increase their operational effectiveness. In this research, we propose the lifecycle cost equations to select the best option for the maintenance of digital avionics. The proposed cost equations consider permanent failures, intermittent faults, and false-positives occurred during the flight. The lifecycle cost equations are determined for the warranty and the post-warranty interval of aircraft operation. We model several maintenance options for each period of service. The cost equations consider the characteristics of the permanent failures and intermittent faults, conditional probabilities of in-flight false-positive and true-positive as well as the cost of different maintenance operations, duration of the flight, and some other parameters. We have demonstrated that a three-level post-warranty maintenance variant with a detector of intermittent faults is the best because it minimizes the total expected maintenance cost several folds compared to other maintenance options.

This article presents the stages of implementation of management and maintenance in a health care establishment. The results demonstrate the evolution in the control of the maintenance department with greater efficiency, planning, increased availability of infrastructure and equipment as well as reduced costs for the operation of health sector processes in Brazil.

The operation and maintenance personnel of equipment with safety hazards are promptly notified. Further, the study distinguishes whether faulty equipment needs on-site operation and maintenance through intelligent technology. It provides remote operation and maintenance functions for power equipment. It reduces the number of on-site operations and maintenance personnel. It improves the level of refined management and operation and maintenance capabilities of equipment. The study has a certain reference value for remote operation and maintenance technology of power equipment.

Classic approach to preventive maintenance of equipment in power system substations was based on periodical maintenance according to regulations and best practices recommended by vendors. SCADA system in HOPS is used primary for real-time monitoring and control of the equipment in substations. Real time data available in SCADA databases contain useful information for substation maintenance optimization based on operational conditions. Malfunctions and failures in the substations are monitored via SCADA system. Analyses of these data can be used to evaluate maintenance strategy and plan the reconstructions and replacement of the equipment. This article presents current maintenance management approach in HOPS, which is the only transmission system operator in Croatia, and possible improvements in efficiency of equipment maintenance using SCADA data. Prerequisite for the analyses of these kinds of data is standardization and unification of information names and structures. HOPS put a lot of effort in standardization of SCADA data during last refurbishment of control centers. Use of SCADA data for analysis drives the need for standardization and vice versa. Examples of statistical analyses of the SCADA data are done on multiple levels. High level analyses is used to provide the global overview of the real time data. It can point to suspicious information that require detailed analyses. The signals that appear often in the list can indicate that there is a problem in the primary equipment, monitoring system or alarm configuration. Low level analyses can be done on target information important for equipment maintenance. In this paper some low level analyses are presented for switching equipment, transformer lifetime, equipment in operation, and tap changer operation. An analysis is made for number of switching operations for breakers and disconnectors in different operational conditions. Preventive maintenance should be done based on number of switching in normal operations and even more often for breakers that are often interrupting fault current. SCADA data can be used for availability of the equipment and duration of failures thus providing valuable information to managers. An analysis on RTU communication availability is shown.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the risks and methods for their assessment in the case of maintenance activities in Sri Lanka. The main objectives were to identify the occupational risks in maintenance work and the risk assessment methods in place and their drawbacks in the Sri Lankan context. Design/methodology/approach – The identification and assessment of risks were undertaken through a study of three fast-moving consumer products manufacturing organisations. The relevant data were collected through personal interviews and site visits. Findings – Most typical risks associated with maintenance are cuts, slips and falls, with severe or fatal injuries as the result of negligence of SOP and failure to use the PPE. Checklists, brainstorming and decomposition techniques were identified as the preferred methods in maintenance for risk identification while a risk rating matrix is used for risk analysis. Lack of awareness and indifference towards risk assessment; make effective risk assessment very difficult. These drawbacks can be minimised by education, systematic training and enforcing rules, regulations and procedures for controlling risks. Originality/value – Studies on maintenance worldwide have identified several maintenance-specific risks such as working at heights, the pressure of time, etc. However, there is a dearth of published research on risks and risk assessment methods in maintenance in Sri Lankan context. The findings highlighted the safety risks and risk assessment tools entailed in the maintenance operations of manufacturing organisations. The findings will be useful for those in maintenance operations in managing risks effectively through designing work environments that are risk-free.
